Interview: Guy Capra
To anyone who has visited the OpenOffice.org discuss 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) in the last two months, Guy Capras 指名する is familiar. He has spearheaded the movement to create a section of OpenOffice.org, 含むing a discuss 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる), where French-speaking persons could 得る (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) about OpenOffice.org and Open Source in French. Guys persistence and 見通し has borne fruit, and as a result of his and many others 成果/努力s, OpenOffice.org now has a Native Language 開発 事業/計画(する), which 現在/一般に houses the Francophone module Guy is 主要な.
Over the space of a couple of days last week, I asked Guy about his background and his thoughts on OpenOffice.org and Open Source. Guy 答える/応じるd in French and English; I have translated, as best I could, the French into English.
You have been active in the French Internet scene for some while, what with running "Creatique," and Sun's French StarOffice, and now OpenOffice.org (and of course, Alomphega). How did you get 伴う/関わるd in the scene? Is your background in programming?
井戸/弁護士席, to explain the steps that led me to this 事業/計画(する) and 動機づけs, I must give you a 簡潔な/要約する account of my professional career.
I was, 初めは, not a programmer but a musician. I did 熟考する/考慮する science at school, but ended up に引き続いて a line of classical education. I finished my schooling in the 地域 around Avignon, in the south of フラン, where I 熟考する/考慮するd 同時代の music and composition. It was there, in the 1980s, that I discovered the usage of computers in music, and the 交差点 of 合理的な/理性的な and creative work, 代表するd, say, by a 永久の discussion between Albert Einstein and Claude Debussy.
After I received my first prize in music composition, a 記録,記録的な/記録する company 申し込む/申し出d me a position as a sound engineer in Paris. It was in this way that I was able finally to realize my dream of that period, to become a music 研究員 at フランs prestigious 中心 of electronic music, IRCAM. I worked there some years, moving between 記録,記録的な/記録するing studios and the Centre Pompidou [Beaubourg], and trying, with good and bad results, to produce some important 作品 on the 創造 of 同時代の music.
It was during this time that I discovered that computer science (linformatique) pleased me much more than creating music: in computer science, when one creates a program, it 機能(する)/行事s or it doesnt, without any subjective 介入. Soon enough, others (機の)カム to 高く評価する/(相場などが)上がる my work, and 結局 I 伸び(る)d some success. But in the first place, for me, the reality of a work is 純粋に pragmatic: it only is as it does. Einstein, Debussy and now, William James: these 指名するs trace the 進化 of my thought.
Around this time, I met my wife, who is a fashion designer. At the beginning of the 1990s, we decided to やめる Paris and the artistic milieu, and move to the Cote dAzur, the 地域 of my birth, where we 設立するd a small fashion house. I had 前進するd in my knowledge of computer science, and with the rudimentary 道具s 利用できる at the time, I believed that I could create an (a)自動的な/(n)自動拳銃 system that would 許す us to 申し込む/申し出 着せる/賦与するing 削減(する) to 手段 from my wifes designs at a price the greater public could afford.
I became 利益/興味d in the problematic of 商売/仕事 because the municipality of the small town where we lived, Hyères-les-Palmiers, asked me to work on communications for the 地元の union of small 商売/仕事s.
Soon enough, the small 商売/仕事s asked me to counsel them regarding their computer 器具/備品; and to develop for them adaptive 管理/経営 道具s. It was then that I 公式に 宣言するd my profession as 存在 in IT (informatique) and 指名するd my 商売/仕事 Créatique (CREAtion InformaTIQUE, in 言及/関連 to our fashion house, which we had called Créature (CREAtion couTURE).
I made a point, in my work, to always 供給(する) my (弁護士の)依頼人s with the source code of my programs, because I considered that I might arrive at a problem and that I must not take the 安全 of my (弁護士の)依頼人s professional activities lightly.
Little by little, I became successful, and the 経済的な model that I 申し込む/申し出d and used was so 初めの that the French IT 圧力(をかける) helped to relay my programs, of which were more than 400,000 見本s were 分配するd in CD ROMs in magazines, all without the 補佐官 of a 圧力(をかける) 機関 or any マスコミ 計画(する). For a country like フラン, this 人物/姿/数字 is やめる 重要な.
But, without 疑問, I was too successful: a 商売/仕事 group had taken my trademark, Créatique, before I had and dispossessed me of the 指名する. I 改名するd my 商売/仕事 Alomphega.
It was at this period, which was oriented toward very small 商売/仕事s, that I discovered StarOffice, when it was still in 星/主役にする 分割. Seduced by the program and by the 代案/選択肢 経済的なs which it 代表するd for my (弁護士の)依頼人s, I searched for whatever 資源s in French that would 補助装置 my (弁護士の)依頼人s in using StarOffice. Having 設立するd that there 存在するd nothing on the 支配する in French, I created, in 1998, a personal 場所/位置 on StarOffice.
At end of 1999, Sun Microsystems フラン 接触するd me ーするために ゆだねる me with 現在のing StarOffice to フラン--a move that was やめる 戦略の for Sun. This first professional 接触する passed very 井戸/弁護士席; Sun フラン asked me to put in place some 解放する/自由な help 会議s (mailing 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)s) for Francophone 使用者s of StarOffice, 同様に as some help 資源s online. Thus, my personal 場所/位置 on StarOffice 発展させるd に向かって what is now http://www.staroffice.online.fr.
自然に, it was with much 利益/興味 that I have followed the 開発 of the 事業/計画(する) OpenOffice.org....
At the 現在の moment, we are working with CollabNet ーするために 提案する a Francophone section to OpenOffice.org. The innovative work that we are creating in this fr section will serve as a base for the 創造 of other, native-language modules.
And, what 可能性s did you see in StarOffice (and now in OpenOffice.org), 特に for Francophones?
StarOffice 代表するs for me the only office 控訴 that is 信頼できる in a professional 状況. I say it again: The only 信頼できる 控訴, which is to say that it is much more than an 代案/選択肢. Why? 簡単に because I am 説得するd that as public knowledge of IT grows, 商売/仕事s will 結局最後にはーなる 受託するing only that which is economically 許容できる and pragmatically 現実主義の.
The OpenOffice.org 事業/計画(する) is the 論理(学)の consequence of the technical and 商業の 進化 of StarOffice, given the pragmatic 状況 and 可能性のある of Open Source.
I see the Open Source movement versus the former means of commercializing programs as analogous to 僕主主義 versus 独裁政治: an irreversible 進歩, because it 代表するs for everyone the 可能性 of 伸び(る)s without any real losses.
I am happy to be able to 参加する in this international 拡張 of OpenOffice.org, for I am 説得するd that one such 開始 will 許す all to 前向きに/確かに 濃厚にする themselves. More prosaically, I am proud to be able to 申し込む/申し出 to French-speaking persons the 前提s of an innovative 道具.
Let's turn now to Open Source... Open Source is here, on this 味方する of the 大西洋, 伸び(る)ing strength daily as a 商売/仕事 and 生産/産物 戦略 and culture. In some ways, Open Source seems characteristically American, what with the iconic "cowboy" 切り開く/タクシー/不正アクセスing away at making code better, faster, cheaper and then 株ing his work with others on the 範囲. We know, however, that those icons are not 完全に true, that they are mostly myths with elements of truth. Open Source developers are not "cowboys." Many, in fact, are 雇うd by 会社/団体s 利益/興味d in てこ入れ/借入資本ing the wealth of labor and knowledge 現在の in the Open Source pool. However, the 約束 of freedom and community these icons 暗示する is a powerful attractor to many developers. But this raises the 利益/興味ing and important question, What is the culture of Open Source like in フラン? And, what makes it 控訴,上告ing? 明確に, these questions are 幅の広い, and you might think of answering them by answering how you (機の)カム to be 利益/興味d in Open Source....
Here, in Europe, Open Source is little by little 現在のing itself as an incontrovertible logic. Even 政治家,政治屋s have come to 登録(する) it and are 好意ing Open Source ソフトウェア in their 行政s.
Every day, 商売/仕事s discover the 経済的な logic of Open Source and develop 経済的な models which 証明する the viability of Open Source; and the public at large begins to comprehend what it is all about
I am 説得するd that, in 予定 time, the proprietary model of ソフトウェア 開発 will pass. I am 平等に 説得するd of the 広大な/多数の/重要な wealth--human 同様に as 財政上の--which is developing in Open Source.
Many in the community are impressed and encouraged by your so-far successful 成果/努力s to create and 含む the Francophone informational section and discussion 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) in OpenOffice.org. What do you hope to 遂行する by this 手段? And, can you 評価する how many people would be 伴う/関わるd?
My 目的(とする) is 正確に to encourage people to join us . I am, 率直に, a 勝利,勝つ-勝利,勝つ (麻薬)常用者! And, of course, my 目的(とする) is also to engage Open Source communities. But I cant 心配する what will eventuate nor the people who will be 伴う/関わるd. I work for a 近づく 未来, hoping my work will be good enough.
The 関心 raised by, の中で others, 法案 Roth, who 長,率いるs Sun's OpenOffice.org 事業/計画(する), was that the French 見解/翻訳/版--and any other native language 見解/翻訳/版--would "balkanize" the 事業/計画(する), i.e., create if not discord, a 欠如(する) of communication. What 戦略s will you 雇う to 妨げる this from occurring?
The balkanization 危険 only 存在するs if we fail to follow what we are doing now. Look at the other 広大な/多数の/重要な Open Source 事業/計画(する)s: they cruelly need volunteers, but they cant find enough 使用者s. What we are doing now in OpenOffice.org is not by any means a balkanization; rather, the contrary would seem to lead to a true balkanization, in which developers 結局最後にはーなる working 独立して because there are no 道具s 利用できる in Open Source 事業/計画(する)s in their native tongues. In my opinion, it is not a good 手段 for a world-wide Open Source 事業/計画(する). 事業/計画(する)s like OpenOffice.org need world-wide support, and the world speaks many native tongues.
I also think that 権利 now it is impossible to decide on a 最終的な 戦略 regarding Internationalization. I really think we have to look at what happens, then make 是正s as needed, always staying 伴う/関わるd, 特に now, at the beginning.
We must その上の 供給する a real 動機づけ for the webmasters [of the native language 場所/位置s] to be 伴う/関わるd in the 事業/計画(する). It is this 動機づけ which will draw volunteers. They need, that is, 率先: 責任/義務 for their work.
Finally, if we see that Im wrong (and I dont think I am), it will always be possible to stop the native language websites without 原因(となる)ing any serious 損失 to the central OpenOffice.org 事業/計画(する).
Say that the 実験--and it is still an 実験--作品. What would you like to see 遂行するd by the "lang" or Native Language 開発 事業/計画(する)?This experience of internationalizing the OpenOffice.org 事業/計画(する) is for me an 驚くべき/特命の/臨時の 適切な時期 for the 全世界の community to come together in a ありふれた 事業/計画(する) and produce superior ソフトウェア.
I think that our success in articulating the 成果/努力s of an enormous 団体/死体 of linguistically diverse developers who 利用する English as the ありふれた tongue for 核心 事業/計画(する)s will 供給する us with an 不可欠の 道具, which, when brought to Open Source 事業/計画(する)s throughout the world, will 証明する that human creativity has no 限界s when enabled by pragmatism.
