iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ review: Wait, I have to wash the mop pad myself?
Although it's smarter about mopping than just about any other robot, it also 要求するs more 手渡すs-on 維持/整備.
iRobot all but 開拓するd the robot vacuum 部類 ― the 初めの Roomba dates way 支援する to 2002 ― so I 推定する/予想するd nothing but good things from the 10年間s-under-its-belt Roomba Combo j9+. It's certainly an attractive きれいにする machine, with stylish gold accents and a decor-friendly ドッキングする/減らす/ドックに入れる. It also 約束s to solve a problem ありふれた to modern vacuum/mop combos: mop pads dr agging on carpet. It 配達するs on that account, but you might have to を取り引きする a different problem. 一方/合間, the price tag isn't for the faint of heart (or 予算). Is it 価値(がある) the splurge? Will this robot keep your 床に打ち倒すs clean with a 最小限 of fuss? Here's my Roomba Combo j9+ review.
VERDICT: iRobot's robo-cleaner is 比較して 平易な to use, smart about 障害s and good at 移行ing from hard 床に打ち倒すs to carpet. But it's better at vacuuming than mopping, and without an 自動車-washing ドッキングする/減らす/ドックに入れる, it's hard to 正当化する choosing this over other robots in the same price 範囲.
- Attractive ドッキングする/減らす/ドックに入れる design
- Unique mop cleverly 避けるs carpet
- Camera-based 指導/手引 system good at 避けるing 障害s and pet waste
- 平易な to 始める,決める up rooms and zones within the app
- Can (悪事,秘密などを)発見する dirtier areas and 焦点(を合わせる) more きれいにする attention there
- Lower-than-普通の/平均(する) profile means it can more easily fit under furniture
- App-based 指示/教授/教育 手動式の is 限られた/立憲的な in 範囲 and hard to read
- ドッキングする/減らす/ドックに入れる doesn't clean or 乾燥した,日照りの mop pad; you do
- Mop pad can get stuck under rugs
- Water 戦車/タンク ぎこちない to refill
- App doesn't show real-time きれいにする 進歩 or robot 場所
Roomba Combo j9+ 体制/機構
To help you get 始める,決める up, iRobot 供給(する)s a pair of illustrated quick-start pages, which I 設立する (疑いを)晴らす and informative ― to a point.
Once you've 設立する a home for the ドッキングする/減らす/ドックに入れる and rolled the j9+ into it for 非難する, the iRobot app 扱うs the 残り/休憩(する) of the 体制/機構 過程. It's pretty good at showing you the basics, but take 公式文書,認める that the app-based Owner's Guide is 基本的に a PDF that's hard to read (because it's so tiny) and 限られた/立憲的な in 範囲. If you're looking for help with 明確な/細部 features or 操作/手術s, you won't find it here.
Luckily, the app is pretty intuitive 全体にわたる. I won't say it's novice-friendly, because there are a few areas that 混乱させるd me (and I've used a lot of these things). For example, why are there "Empty 貯蔵所" and "Refill 戦車/タンク" 支配(する)/統制するs when those things are supposed to happen automatically? Why does clean-zone 体制/機構 申し込む/申し出 weirdly 明確な/細部 指名するs like "coat rack" and "desk," which are more like 障害s I'd rather it 避ける?
Roomba Combo j9+ features and 業績/成果
Like most robo-vacs at this price point, the Combo j9+ can sweep, vacuum and mop ― and do so on 需要・要求する or at scheduled times. It self-empties its dustbin into the ドッキングする/減らす/ドックに入れる, which also 含む/封じ込めるs a clean-water 戦車/タンク that must be refilled from time to time. (Just how often depends on how often you clean your 床に打ち倒すs, but iRobot 見積(る)s 30 days.)
A word about the ドッキングする/減らす/ドックに入れる: It's の中で the prettier ones I've seen, with a 支持を得ようと努めるd-パネル盤d 最高の,を越す that would 現実に make a nice little end (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する, seeing as it doesn't ever need to be 解除するd. Instead, you 接近 the water 貯蔵所 by 開始 the 前線-直面するing door. The downside is that 貯蔵所 is wide, not tall like in most other ドッキングする/減らす/ドックに入れるs, and therefore a little unwieldy when you're trying to refill it.
In my 実験(する)s, the Roomba 成し遂げるd reasonably 井戸/弁護士席 全体にわたる, though it was a little slow and meandering at first. iRobot says it can take the Combo j9+ three to five runs to create a 詳細(に述べる)d 地図/計画する of your 床に打ち倒すs. Other models I've 実験(する)d get this done after the first 遠出, but to iRobot's credit, the 地図/計画する here seems more 正確な and 詳細(に述べる)d. I also like how 平易な it is to 指名する rooms, create dividers and 設立する no-go zones ― 仕事s some other robo-vac apps make 複雑にするd.
But why doesn't the app show the robot's position or きれいにする 進歩 on that 地図/計画する while it's running? That's a pretty ありふれた feature in other cleaners. You do get status 公式文書,認めるs like "鈍らせるing pad," but I 行方不明になる 存在 able to see 正確に/まさに where the robot is ― 特に if it gets stuck and I have to 追跡(する) it 負かす/撃墜する. (The app does have a "位置を示す" feature, which will play a sound to help you find it.) I was also surprised that my phone didn't 通知する me when きれいにする was done.
いっそう少なく surprising: The Combo j9+ did a 罰金 職業 広範囲にわたる and vacuuming, which makes sense given iRobot's pedigree. It's also やめる good at 避けるing 障害s, thanks in part to a camera-力/強力にするd 指導/手引 system. If you have pets, you'll be glad to know iRobot 保証(人)s the Roomba will steer around any (悪事,秘密などを)発見するd "事故s," which could さもなければ lead to a pretty 汚い mess. (If it fails to do so, you're する権利を与えるd to a 解放する/自由な robot 交替/補充.)
A clean sweep, but what about mopping?
The mop is arguably the most 利益/興味ing feature here. Some robots use a flat pad 機動力のある to the underside; others 雇う spinning 小衝突s. The challenge with both designs is what happens when the machine rolls の上に carpet: The wet mop ends up dragging on it. Some newer models can automatically 解除する their pads or 小衝突s, which helps on low-pile carpet, but there's only so high they can go. Anything with a little 高さ still gets wet.
The Combo j9+ has a mop pad that's built into the 最高の,を越す. When there's hard 床に打ち倒す to be cleaned, that pad swings out on a mechanical arm, then tucks underneath the robot. It's a clever 解答 that definitely solves the wet-carpet conundrum.
Also clever: iRobot's SmartScrub 科学(工学)技術, which 原因(となる)s the robot to move 支援する and 前へ/外へ over problem 位置/汚点/見つけ出すs, the machine 同等(の) of 肘 grease. 式のs, in my 実験(する)ing, this didn't work やめる 同様に as spinning 小衝突s, 特に with sticky stuff like jam. The pad can't get into corners, either, though 小衝突s have 制限s there 同様に.
There's one other hiccup with the mechanical-arm design: On a few occasions, the mop pad got 罠にかける under the corner of an area rug. I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う this was because the robot didn't have enough room behind it to 支援する up. This happened with two different rugs in two different rooms.
All robo-cleaners get stuck on occasion. My main (民事の)告訴 with the Roomba is that while it uses clean water on every mopping run, it won't 現実に clean its own mop pad, something most other high-end robos can do. While it's not difficult to 除去する, wash and 取って代わる the pad, it's an extra step for me ― and something else I have to remember. A robot vacuum/mop should 要求する 極小の 介入 from its owner; the whole point of spending this 肉親,親類d of money is to 解放する/自由な yourself from 床に打ち倒す chores.
It's also 価値(がある) 公式文書,認めるing that I 遭遇(する)d an 操作の glitch or two during 実験(する)ing. At one point, I started a "vacuum and mop everywhere" cycle and it only vacuumed. The next time around, it worked as it was supposed to. 類似して, during one cycle, it ran out of 殴打/砲列 力/強力にする and returned to the ドッキングする/減らす/ドックに入れる to recharge, but never 投機・賭けるd out again to finish the 職業.
Roomba Combo j9+: Should you buy it?
There's a lot to like about iRobot's 旗艦 robot, from its pleasing design to its clever mop that solves a real problem with these 肉親,親類d of machines. It vacuums 特に 井戸/弁護士席, and I also 高く評価する/(相場などが)上がる its ability to 避ける 障害s (特に pet waste) and (悪事,秘密などを)発見する areas that need extra attention.
However, I don't think it's as 効果的な at mopping as robots that 雇う spinning 小衝突s, and I don't like having to wash the mop pad myself ― not when I'm spending this much money. That 面 alone makes this harder to recommend than, say, the 最新の Roborock model (which I'm 現在/一般に 実験(する)ing).
Speaking of money, though, it's 価値(がある) 公式文書,認めるing that にもかかわらず the $1,400 price tag, the Combo j9+ is frequently 割引d to $1,000 ― almost every other month, in fact. That makes it a little more palatable 親族 to higher 定価つきの competitors. If this sounds like your cup of robot, definitely wait for a sale price.
