Sensing and 支配(する)/統制する for hobbyists and schools: Calibrating your sensors
This page was 誘発するd by discussions of how a rain 計器 might be calibrated. The 計器 in question 作品 by tipping, once for each time a 確かな 量 of rain has fallen. It has bolts which can be adjusted to change the 量 of rain needed for a tip to occur.
Some people spoke about their 成果/努力s to get the tips to occur after 0.01" of rain had fallen. To me, this is bad science.
Far better to be sure that the 装置 is tipping reliably after ABOUT 0.01"... but always after the SAME 量. After you have 達成するd this, you 決定する how much that same 量 is to the greatest possible 正確. So what if your tipper is tipping after, on 普通の/平均(する), 0.01204"? You've got a computer to do the arithmetic that says that 62 (and a bit) tips means that 0.75" has fallen!
In any 事例/患者... how much does it 事柄? Surely 存在 able to compare what you are sensing from one day to the next with your 事前の 観察s is the main point? Of course, 存在 able to relate your readings to someone else's is nice.

A word about "降雨".... don't be too sure you are (疑いを)晴らす on this 概念... I saw a long, 混乱させるd discussion.
When we say "One インチ of rain has fallen", what we mean is that if you had a コンテナ with vertical 味方するs, e.g. a shoe box made of plastic, out in that rain, then you would have water an インチ 深い in the 底(に届く) of the コンテナ.
What seemed to 混乱させる people was the 影響 of 注ぐing that water into a narrower コンテナ.
It is やめる usual to collect rain with a funnel, making it 落ちる into a 狭くする cylinder. The advantage of this is that it "magnifies" the water, so that you can 手段 how much has fallen more 正確に. 耐える with me...
Suppose you didn't want ANY "magnification". Lets say you had a cylinder which is 10cm across. If 1 cm of rain 落ちるs, you will have water to a depth of 1cm in the 底(に届く) of the cylinder.
A 10 cm (半径, R, = 5cm) circle's area is 78 square センチメートルs. (pi x R x R, i.e. 3.14 x 5 x 5).
If you had another cylinder with half the cross section, and 注ぐd the water from the first one into it, the depth would 二塁打.
So how do you calibrate your tipper if you want to? Do most of this in metric 部隊s. You can change "cm of 降雨" to "インチs of 降雨" at the end if you want to. (1cm = 0.3937 インチs)
First you 手段 the 直径 of the 開始 into which rain is 落ちるing. (Assuming it is circular!). Divide that by 2 to get the 半径. Square that number. (I.e. multiply it by itself). Multiply THAT by pi (3.1416). The Dallas / AAG rain 計器's 開始 is 15.2 cm across, so the area is 181.4 square センチメートルs.
Once you know the area of your tipper's 開始, multiply the number by 10.
Take that many 立方(体)の センチメートルs of water, 注ぐ it through the 計器. How ever many "tip" events you 記録,記録的な/記録する will be the number of tip events when 10cm of rain 落ちるs. (Many kitchen 手段ing cups have metric 場内取引員/株価s. 1cubic センチメートル = 1cc = 1ml. とじ込み/提出するing that, a 極度の慎重さを要する 重さを計るing machine might be to 手渡す: 1814cc of water 重さを計るs 1.814 kg. Oh, I do like the metric system!)
How 急速な/放蕩な the "rain" 落ちるs can 影響 how the tipper 答える/応じるs. To get a reasonable 率 of water flow into the 計器, I 簡単に took a plastic milk jug, poked a small 穴を開ける in the 底(に届く), and put it in the 最高の,を越す of the rain 計器 while the water trickled out.

Want to calibrate an anemometer?
PLEASE take GREAT care with this approach... there would be no excuse for 原因(となる)ing an 事故....
If you were to 開始する your anemometer on a car, and 運動 it at さまざまな 速度(を上げる)s on a windless day, that would do the 職業, wouldn't it!
Don't forget the Bernoulli 影響. 空気/公表する passing over the 最高の,を越す of a typical car will be travelling faster than the car. Try to 開始する the anemometer わずかに out in 前線 of the car. BUT BE SURE IT cannot COME LOOSE ON THE HIGHWAY, PLEASE.
For a small group of readers:
In the first half of 2002, members of the Dalsemi 天候-名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) had a 共同の 事業/計画(する) to produce 晴雨計s for the 1-Wire / MicroLan. If you don't have one of the 道具s, it may be too late, but you might still be lucky!. In October 2002, Simon Atkin still had a 供給(する) of the boards. Try him! Or 地位,任命する a request 経由で the weatherlist.
