Borland Turbo Pascal: A 解放する/自由な pre-Windows treasure

How to 任命する/導入する...

The advice here was 実験(する)d on an XP machine. If you have a Windows 98 (or earlier) machine that you can use, that would be 罰金... maybe even better.

Turbo Pascal 5.5:

Long ago in the 薄暗い dark distant days before Windows, one of the most important programming 環境s for PCs was Borland's Turbo Pascal.

見解/翻訳/版 5.5 of that classic is now 利用できる 解放する/自由な, online. You can use this excellent Pascal for reasonable 目的s (see the 罰金 print if in 疑問). 存在 from before Windows, the download is, by today's 基準s, small (just under 1 megabyte... it would fit on a floppy! Remember those?). Don't let the efficiency of the code fool you... it can do many, many things.

You can download Borland's Turbo Pascal 5.5 from:

http://dn.codegear.com/article/images/20803/tp55.zip

... which should put the とじ込み/提出する "tp55.zip" on your hard レコード. (Elect "Save to レコード", not "open" or "run".) (Borland was called "Inprise" for a moment, and now some of their 製品s are 利用できる from "Codegear". Codegear's page says it was "created by Borland's 決定/判定勝ち(する) to separate its developer 道具s group...")

(You can get the download page 直接/まっすぐに with the link above, or go there 経由で pages with introductions, etc, from...

http://dn.codegear.com/museum

...scroll 負かす/撃墜する to article "Antique ソフトウェア: Turbo Pascal v5.5",

click to open it...)

I'm 用心深い: I download things to an 古記録 area, and then work with a copy. In this 事例/患者, I put the copy in C:\tmp. That's not a place I 普通は work, but in this 事例/患者 there's a 推論する/理由 to break the 支配する. You will 結局 削除する this, so don't worry too much.

While unzipping the contents of tp55.zip, I got all 絡まるd up, but that was just my fault. 結局, you should have two folders, "Disk1" and "Disk2", in C:\tmp. Neither has sub- folders.

I then went 負かす/撃墜する a blind alley which I can save you 調査するing. Ignore whatever you may have noticed in the 任命する/導入する 指示/教授/教育s about keeping things in the folders created by the zip/unzip 過程s. Move everything from the "Disk2" folder into the "Disk1" folder. (There are no 指名する duplications.)

Go into "Disk1", 二塁打-click on "任命する/導入する.exe" (which may show on your system as "任命する/導入する".) The window that opens is rather 天然のまま. Don't be alarmed. (If you have problems doing the 任命する/導入する, just 圧力(をかける) escape (perhaps several times) to 支援する out. Be advised: All of the little things we've come to take for 認めるd in Windows are not "givens" when you're working with an old 使用/適用... for instance I couldn't use Crtl-C to copy the path the system 示唆するd.) Also 公式文書,認める that the sorts of things that you see during the 任命する/導入する 過程, and while using Turbo Pascal, can be 含むd in programs written with Turbo Pascal. While it didn't 申し込む/申し出 やめる the 緩和する of use of Windows, it has features that were not unlike some of the Windows interface that was yet to come, when Turbo Pascal was one of the best 環境s 利用できる. 支援する to work. 支援する to how to 始める,決める it up and use it on your machine.

圧力(をかける) "Enter" to continue past the welcome 審査する. 明示する "C" (probably... and if not, you should know!) as the "Source 運動".

On my machine, the system cleverly noticed that my source path would be "\tmp\disk1". If yours does too, all 井戸/弁護士席 and good. Even thought the path (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) seems to be "selected", just 圧力(をかける) enter. (If your machine did not 選ぶ up the 権利 path, and assuming you followed my advice, tell your machine that the source path is "\tmp\disk1".)

Select "任命する/導入する Turbo Pascal on a Hard 運動"

Now... we come to a choice.

I have no 疑問 that the system will happily 任命する/導入する Turbo Pascal (TP) for you where-ever you want it, i.e. in any folder. But it will be easiest to 任命する/導入する it in a folder called TP 位置を示すd in the root of your C: 運動. This isn't really the way we do things today, but I'd recommend that you give in to TP's 期待s, just for the simple life. That's what I've done in what follows. If you really, really don't want to do that, read the text at the 底(に届く) of the installer 審査する... it has some good news for you. I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う that if you change the base folder ("directory" in the terminology of TP's day), you will need to use DOS 指名するs during the 任命する/導入する 過程.

After you take my advice and 受託する the defaults, or after you 明示する different folders, 圧力(をかける) F9. (There's a message to that 影響 in the 底(に届く) line of the installer's window.)

During the 任命する/導入する, you may get messages 説 "Cannot 遂行する/発効させる UNPACK.COM...". I'm not sure where that comes from... I didn't get it one time, did another. If you get it, you need to cure it. Say "中止する" (by 圧力(をかける)ing A.)

Still talking about curing "Cannot 遂行する/発効させる..."...

By now, you should at least have a folder C:\TP Keep it.. but 削除する everything in it. From C:\Tmp\Disc1, 簡単に copy (don't move... you need a copy of UNPACK in both places) UNPACK.COM to C:\TP Try running INSTALL again. Don't worry... for now... about the message about changing your "Path"....

... now the 任命する/導入する should go 滑らかに. Here ends talking about "Cannot 遂行する/発効させる...."

Now, you do, probably, have a working 取り付け・設備 of Turbo Pascal (TP, hereafter) on your system... but if you have an XP system, it may not seem like it!

The に引き続いて is clumsy... I'm sure someone can tell us how to do it better, but in the 合間... it 作品! And it doesn't "do things" to your settings that may have 影響s on other ソフトウェア which you don't want upset.

By the way, I'm 99% 確かな that what we've done has made no registry 入ること/参加(者)s. You can "uninstall" TP just by 削除するing C:\TP and everything below it.

(You will have to take some time to get used to the 半端物 (to us, "modern" folk) interface to TP. It is perfectly 生産力のある, just different! (I'll be giving you some help in the に引き続いて.)

Now for another bit of "準備"... you don't have to do this, but it will create a place to put the things you 令状, so that it is 平易な to have them separate from the TP system とじ込み/提出するs. Not only will that 減ずる 混乱, it will also 容易にする 支援 up your work. You may be tempted to put the folder someplace else... and it could かもしれない be done.... and I don't like putting it "below" the TP folder... but I did it that way to make life easier. You can 指名する it almost anything you like. My 初期のs ("tkb") don't seem to 刈る up often in other programmers 計画/陰謀s, so I have called the folder I'm making tkb1proj. That 指名する is 平易な for me to 位置/汚点/見つけ出す as something I've 追加するd, and 平易な to 避ける 混乱させるing with things that the system has 任命する/導入するd. Either use my 初期のs, i.e. make a folder called C:\TP\TKB1Proj, or just remember that when I say "TKB1PROJ", you have to use whatever 指名する you selected. It is possible, and perhaps wise, to make folders within that folder, one for each 事業/計画(する) you 乗る,着手する upon... but TP isn't やめる as 使用者 friendly, in 尊敬(する)・点 of folder (or "directory", as it calls them) 航海 as Windows. For now, use good 指名するs for your 事業/計画(する)s, so that they can rub shoulders in one folder without too much hassle. The good news is that when you make an 使用/適用 (program) with TP, typically, you will have just two とじ込み/提出するs... the sourcecode ("MyPrgm.PAS") and the exe とじ込み/提出する ("MyPrgm.EXE")... so having several 事業/計画(する)s in one folder is not a big 取引,協定.

(On either a Win98 or XP machine, you may need to make the "FILE=" 入ること/参加(者) in the CONFIG.SYS とじ込み/提出する say FILES=20... but I 疑問 that will be necessary in any machine you are likely to be using after 2006. When I find no need to do さもなければ, I like to leave my system settings untouched!) (You may be able to do this, as you are able to do the "PATH" 巧みな操作s we'll come to in a moment, on a "once in a while/ 一時的な" basis. For now just hope everything 作品 without the need of a "FILES=" modification! It did on two XP machines I've tried all of this on!)

=== This would be a good point, if you are in any 疑問 about the 明言する/公表する of things, to 改名する C:\Tmp to C:\TmpOld, save anything you want to, and 再開する the system. What follows will be the 天然のまま way to work with TP from day to day 今後. (As I said, bits of what follows can probably be 改善するd... but they'll "do".)

(改名するing "Tmp" as "TmpOld 減少(する)s the chance of your system using something that you don't realize it is using.... It "shouldn't" be using... or need... anything in Tmp (TmpOld) anymore, but... Hmm.)

=== So... you're sitting at a 用意が出来ている system, all keen to do your first TP program. Here we go. We're going to do things "by 手渡す" for now. In a bit, I'll show you how to 自動化する さまざまな chores.

Open an MS-DOS window. (One way is to Click "Start | Run" and enter "cmd".)

Enter CD C:\TP\TKB1PROJ

(If you decided against my advice of making the TKB1PROJ folder, then enter CD C:\TP

Enter PATH=%PATH%;C:\TP (That may not be necessary, and there are fancier ways to do it... but for now, that "will do", and will have the least chance of 影響する/感情ing other things.) (On a Win98 machine, enter PATH=%PATH%;C:\DOS;C:\TP)

In the MS-DOS window, enter ..\TURBO (it doesn't have to be in upper 事例/患者, but be sure to 含む the "dot dot backslash" prefix), and the Turbo Pascal compiler should start up!! You should get some white 令状ing on a blue background, in the MS-DOS window that used to be showing the 天然のまま white on 黒人/ボイコット. It took about 5 seconds on one machine I was using... not a problem, but a bit worrying when you are getting started!) (If you decided against my advice of making the TKB1PROJ folder, then 簡単に enter TURBO.

A little word about the ..\ It says "Look for 'TURBO' in the folder which is the parent of the folder you are in at the moment". The 推論する/理由 I've told you to do things this way is that it starts you off in the folder where you want to be for saving and 負担ing your sourcecode とじ込み/提出するs, and saving your .exe とじ込み/提出するs. If you don't do things my way, you have extra things to do when you come to save and 負担, unless you're 用意が出来ている just to 捨てる everything, all a muddle, together in the TP folder.

So! Let's play with the new programming 環境!....

圧力(をかける) the Enter 重要な to make the copyright window go away.

Before we play (sorry), I'll 申し込む/申し出 a little help with the TP working 環境. See the "menu" across the 最高の,を越す? ("とじ込み/提出する.. Edit.. Run.... ") It looks like a Windows menu 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業. It is... sort of. But! You can't, for instance, click on "とじ込み/提出する" to see the とじ込み/提出する 操作/手術s. Either 圧力(をかける) F10, which will 最高潮の場面 one of the menu 選択s, and then use the arrow 重要なs, or 圧力(をかける) the letter of the one you want, or 圧力(をかける) Alt- with the letter of the one you want. Do Alt-C now. Then, without the Alt 重要な, 圧力(をかける) D to go 負かす/撃墜する to "目的地" (You can also use the arrow 重要なs to get there.) 圧力(をかける) the enter 重要な to 始める,決める the 目的地 to "Disk". Why? We'll come 支援する to that! (You will probably have to do this again and again. Turbo Pascal probably won't remember that you want the 目的地 for 収集するs to be the レコード. That was normal in the "old days". If things did something one way once, they did it that way the next time! (We'll see later how to teach Turbo Pascal bad tricks. You don't have to do it again and again, but 直す/買収する,八百長をするing that breaks other things!)) (Don't waste time trying to open the "Edit" sub-menu... we'll talk about that in a minute.)

圧力(をかける) F10 again (or Escape), and you should be in the "Edit" window. Enter....

program hi; begin writeln('Hi Sheepdog'); end.

EXACTLY like that :-)

(Don't overlook the period (十分な stop) at the end of what you need to type.)

Before you do anything else, save what you have....

===

Read 負かす/撃墜する to "now go 支援する and do it" before doing anything, then go through it a second time, doing it.

ーするために save your work, either 圧力(をかける) F2, or 圧力(をかける) Alt-F, then (no "Alt") S. You can use any sensible 指名する, but, assuming you used my subfolder suggestion (and you're on your own 今後 if you didn't) use.... C:\TP\TKB1PROJ\demo1sg.pas ... for this bit of sourcecode. the good news? TP will "type" most of that for you. The bad news is that you'll have to get used to わずかに different editing techniques than a modern Windows 使用者 would be used to. For now, just use the backspace 重要な to 削除する "NONAME.PAS", enter demo1sg, and 圧力(をかける) Enter. (TP will put the .PAS 支援する on for you.)

The 指名する demo1sg (機の)カム from "DEMOnstration program, the 1st, from Sheepdog Guides tutorial").

Your life will probably be simpler if you keep the 指名するs of とじ込み/提出するs and folders to no more than 8 characters long, and if you use no spaces in the 指名するs. You'll learn that entering filenames and paths isn't as 平易な as it is with Windows. Until you learn things you can 延期する about using Turbo Pascal, you'll have to type the 指名するs, not just click on them in 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)s. (平易な ways to move around the directory tree without doing it all "by 手渡す" do 存在する. 述べるing them isn't 平易な!) You won't be able to select text by dragging across it with the mouse. It is hard to believe that I really worked like this for many years! (Also 耐える in mind that 支援する in those days Ctrl-Z didn't undo almost any mistake if you realize すぐに that you've made one... as I just did while typing this. Nor did 使用/適用s always 持つ/拘留する your 手渡す.... although Turbo Pascal will 警告する you if you try to やめる it without saving your work.)

So! You've written, (and saved) your first TP program... but you 港/避難所't yet seen it run!

A quick aside:

If you need "Save As", there's a way... you have to invoke "令状 To", 含む (I think) the 十分な path to where you want the program saved, AND, after "finishing" 令状 to", do a "save". The save part isn't built into the "令状 to", nor, I think, does "令状 to" notice the directory you have 始める,決める.

In "the good old days", seeing your program run was easier than what follows. (That was one of the delights of TP.) Windows XP gave up (it was time) some of the backward compatibility 現在の in earlier 見解/翻訳/版s of Windows. If you are using TP on a Win98 machine (in 5/07, I still do most of my everyday work on such machines), it will probably work better than this, but for all you XP (and Vista?) 使用者s, I'll show you how to work with TP, even on your machines.

Make sure that 収集する|選択s|目的地 is still 始める,決める to "Disk". (It will be, unless you, say, took a break and 再開するd TP since we 始める,決める it to Disk above.)

On a Win98 machine, or if you get it working on an XP machine, or if for some 推論する/理由 you prefer it, you can just invoke TP's "Run". Either use the menu, or the Ctrl-F9 shortcut. But, on an XP machine, unless there are errors in your program, it will seem that nothing has happened. If there are errors, there will be messages which may not yet be 100% (疑いを)晴らす to you, but with practice you'll learn to read them. For now, just check and re-check what you've typed. When it matches what I told you to type, the program will appear to do nothing when you "run" it! By the way: Sorry... I can find no way to copy/ paste between this page and the TP editor. You'll have to do the old fashioned way!)

To see that your program has been created, and will work, use Windows to start a second MS-Dos window (Start|Run|Cmd, as before)

In that window use CD C:\TP\TKB1PROJ to move to your TP 事業/計画(する)s folder. ("CD" (機の)カム from "change directory". (Remember "directory" is the old "folder").

In the new window, after doing the CD I just について言及するd, enter "demo1sg". You should, almost すぐに, see "Hi Sheepdog" on the 審査する in the same window. You've done it! Your program 作品! (Leave the window open for now.)

What's happened is this:

When you did "Run", TP 変えるd your sourcecode into the machine code the computer needs, and saved a とじ込み/提出する called demo1sg.exe. The 転換 is called 収集するing. Because you 始める,決める the 収集する 目的地 to Disk, the result of the 収集するing was saved on the レコード. On a pre-Win98 machine, TP then invokes that for you. What I've 述べるd above, what you seem to need to do on an XP machine, is to invoke the run of the .exe by 手渡す. No big 取引,協定. You can leave the second window open, and switch between it and TP's window as need be.

If you are working thus, you can 単に 圧力(をかける) F9 to re-収集する, save a new .exe when you have changed your program. (F9 作品 on the Win98 machine to, but in either 事例/患者 it 単に 収集するs the code and saves the .exe... use Ctrl-F9 in Win98, so you 収集する and run the program.) A little MS-DOS trick: In the DOS window where you are 実験(する)ing your program, 圧力(をかける)ing F3 is as good as re-typing "Demo1SG" the next time you need it. Just to see all of this in 活動/戦闘: Make a little change to the text in the "writeln" line, 圧力(をかける) F9, switch over to the other MS-DOS Window, 圧力(をかける) F3 to re-invoke tkb1proj, 圧力(をかける) enter... and you should see the changed text appear.

=== It's been years since I worked with the TP menu interface. Going 支援する to it was a bit strange at first, but I'm 速く re-discovering how nice it is. For years, I didn't like the Windows menu interface because I'd come from the, in some ways better, TP interface. You can do it! You may even discover that you, too, like it. (I won't defend the TP text editing interface. That is usable, but not better than Windows'. This, perhaps, is the moment to について言及する that when you are in the TP window, if you 圧力(をかける) F1, you will get help with things. If your cursor is on something Pascal knows about, e.g. "writeln", and 圧力(をかける) Ctrl-F1, you are supposed to get help with that... but it isn't working on the XP machine I'm using as I 令状 this. Sorry... that may be another of the "needs to be on a pre-XP machine" thing. But! The good news: Just 圧力(をかける) F1 TWICE to get into an 索引 that will take you to wherever you need to be.)

井戸/弁護士席... there you have it. You don't know all there is about using TP or another Pascal at this point, but you have a machine that runs TP, and you've been shown how to 令状 a program.

As I said at the 手始め, Turbo Pascal is a tremendously 有能な programming 環境. If you are trying to learn Pascal, you could do a lot worse. It isn't terribly Windows friendly... use Delphi if you want to 令状 for Windows. (I've also written tutorials for Delphi, if you are 利益/興味d.)

I said TP is powerful; you might 同意しない. I 譲歩する that bigger things are written today... but consider how light the TP 足跡 is. The whole editor/ compiler is smaller that a modest 2007-時代 使用/適用! For the 需要・要求するs it makes, it is tremendously powerful.

A useful "trick"... Use Notepad or 類似の to create a small とじ込み/提出する consisting of...

path=%path%;C:\TP
cd C:\TP\TKB1PROJ
..\TURBO

Save that as something like "StartTP.bat" The first part can be what you like. Be sure that you're not creating somehing like "StartTP.bat.txt", which can happen on a system with "known 拡張s hidden." You can put it where you like. You can either 二塁打 click on it 直接/まっすぐに, or create a shortcut to it. Either will take care up starting up Turbo Pascal for you, 取引,協定ing with the さまざまな chores efficiently.

One last little tip: Once you are happy that you aren't making too many mistakes with settings, you might want to use "選択s | 環境 | ConfigSave | On" to make TP remember your preferences. But keep in mind that once you have 始める,決める that, TP will behave like modern Windows 使用/適用s, and mistakes you made with settings in a 事前の 開会/開廷/会期 will come 支援する to haunt you in 未来 開会/開廷/会期s.

Enjoy!
