We depend on our computers. Much of what we do is done "on" them. Along the way we make settings, etc, in the programs we use.

And then the day comes when we have to move from an old computer to a new one.

Backup! Backup! Backup!

It is so 平易な to neglect backup... and so painful when you realize you need something that has gone 行方不明の during an 移転 試みる/企てる.

For a few years now I've been trying to keep as much as possible in folders and sub-folders of my "文書s" folder.

And I've been using Cobian backup to do a 卸売 copy of ALL of that from time to time. (I need to remember to の近くに Thunderbird before I do that, or the backup may not be 満足な. You may have programs with 類似の 必要物/必要条件s.

The Cobian backup, configured as I have it, 単に copies everything. I can go into the backup in 正確に/まさに the same way as I go into my "文書s" folders.

When I have major things in place on the new machine, I will to a "last 明言する/公表する" image of the old machine's "文書s" to an 外部の hard 運動, 交換(する) it to the new machine, and do a by-手渡す, careful, folder by folder 移転 of the old とじ込み/提出するs into the new computer.

--- A sad 開発: In some 事例/患者s today, if you copy a とじ込み/提出する from one place to another, the datestamp on the とじ込み/提出する is changed to the 現在の day. It doesn't always happen. I hope it doesn't happen too much to you or to me while filling our new machines with our old とじ込み/提出するs.

There is something to be said for NOT trying to move your settings, etc, for a program from your old computer to your new one.

You will, in most 事例/患者s, want to do a fresh 任命する/導入する of each program on the new computer.

After you've done that, check what 見解/翻訳/版 you have. It is a really, really good idea, if it is possible, and the 使用/適用 isn't 壊れやすい or 批判的な to your 操作/手術s, to get the instance on your old computer up to the same 見解/翻訳/版 before you try to tranfer settings, etc.

If it isn't going to be possible to get the 見解/翻訳/版 numbers in step, "re-building" the program settings, etc, by 手渡す may be the wiser answer.

I've changed a lot of the default settings in my web browser since I 任命する/導入するd it. I've also built up a library of bookmarks.

This essay is meant to help you move from one computer to another as painlessly as possible.

After you've been using a program for a while, you will have made tweaks to settings, you may have built up a (一定の)期間ing dictionary, put in things like the URL for your mail server.

When you have 任命する/導入するd a program on your new computer, the things you need to 追加する to it are your settings and 蓄積するd とじ込み/提出するs that it uses to behave how you want it to behave. For instance, wordprocessor 使用者s often build their own libraries of styles and 文書 templates.

These two are in 新規加入 to the collection of とじ込み/提出するs you've created with the program, the "生産(高)", you might call it.

Why have I written this? It has no "answer". But I hope by 製図/抽選 your attention to these things, I have helped you 計画(する) you 移行 between your machines.

Moving from your old computer to a new one can be traumatic. You have a lot of settings on your old machine, and lots of 文書s. We'll come to settings in 予定 course. For now, we'll look at とじ込み/提出するs.

I can't give you "the answer" to this one... but I will encourage you to THINK and PLAN what you are going to do before you start. I hope you have been thinking about the day you need to make the move from the first day you were using your old computer.

The more discipline and organixsation you can bring to where you save things (i.e. create とじ込み/提出するs), the happier your 計算するing life will be... and the より小数の things you will lose when hard 運動s fail, or 昇格s become necessary.

I TRY to keep everything in my "文書s" folder. In theory, I just copy that folder to a new machine, and, presto, I "have everything". That is ALMOST true... but the 詳細(に述べる)s and exceptions need attention.

Let's take the very simple 事例/患者 of someone who only uses their computer to read things on the web, 令状 a few spreadsheets, and make the 時折の text 文書.

Remember: At the moment, we are only talking about moving your 文書s to the new Windows PC.

That simple 使用者 would have been wise to 始める,決める up and use two sub-folders in his/her 文書s folder: "Text" and "SSs". (Why not "Spreadsheets"? It 支払う/賃金s to keep the 指名するs of high level folders short.)

That 使用者 now comes to move to a new computer.

First: 任命する/導入する the apps you want to use. Get them running. いつかs the "clever" things explained here to move your settings, dictionaries, etc, from the old machine to the new are bad ideas. It is いつかs best to start with a "clean", fresh 任命する/導入する of a program, absent poor choices made by you in settings.

But if you do want to copy your old settings の上に your new instance of a program, you may 井戸/弁護士席 need to do some 体制/機構 before you do that. And you may want to create new 文書s (とじ込み/提出するs) along the way. On the new machine. But! The idea was to copy your old 文書s to the new machine, 持続するing your system of folders and sub folders.

What if there's a とじ込み/提出する called "MyAddresses" on the old machine, and you need to start a new "MyAddresses" on the new machine before you do the "copy everything" 過程? If you aren't careful, the old "MyAddresses" will try to over-令状 the new one. Sigh.

There's a simple answer: In the root of 文書s on the new machine, make a folder called "0aMoveToFinalHomes". (Or some variant, if you already have one with your 見解/翻訳/版 of that on your old machine.)

Do what you like within that, and then move everything out of it their proper homes after you've done the 卸売 copy/paste of your old machine's "文書s" folder to the new machine.

Simple, in theory! Sadly, some programs use the 文書s folder. You'll have to be careful with these.

I started this section with consideration of the needs of a simple 使用者. The 過程 really isn't very different for the ordinary 使用者... you just need to be careful about some of your folders... the ones in your "文書s" folder that your programs use "behind your 支援する".

Which are they? That's why I said I can't give you "the answer". Just keep an 注目する,もくろむ on your 文書s folder as you 任命する/導入する the programs you want to use.

This can happen even when the とじ込み/提出する is NOT in use, and when you ARE the 行政官/管理者. (I never 遭遇(する)d this in Windows before Windows 11. Sigh.)

If you just want a simple 事例/患者 地元の printer, on Windows, that should 提起する/ポーズをとる no 重要な 問題/発行するs. Good luck. I would recommend starting by 任命する/導入するing your printer as a 地元の 装置, even if 結局 you move to printing across your LAN. Even if you do, having the printer drivers on your new machine will be helpful. (The new machine will send "用意が出来ている" とじ込み/提出するs across the LAN. The host on the LAN for the printer won't have much to do, i.e. won't have a large chance of 難破させるing a print 職業.

If you want to print across your LAN, look at the next advice first. ("許可s" will be important to printing 同様に as to seeing or saving とじ込み/提出するs.)

Don't get too excited... I spent hours 試みる/企てるing this approach only to find a long way into it that I couldn't finish it. I 追加するd a lot of junk to my new machine along the way. I only leave it here in 事例/患者 you want to try it, have better luck. I think it should work. I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う something weird has 設立する its way into the 許可s in my machine.

I ended up just 任命する/導入するing a fresh "Firefox" (it isn't 現実に "fresh", but maybe I shed some baggage), and doing an "輸出(する) bookmarks" on the old machine, and an 輸入する bookmarks on the new. 拡張s, etc? I don't use many, 正確に/まさに because migrating a 体制/機構 is so uncertain. I'll just have to "re-build" "my" Firefox as best I can as I go along. Search engines, etc. Sigh.

... at this point my will to live was at a low point. If only I had been able migrate the profile! I'm afraid I'm only 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)ing some of my Firefox settings. They are a 事柄 of individual taste, anyway, mostly.

Privacy/ 安全: Tell websites not to 株 my data
   Cookies, 場所/位置 data, and (武器などの)隠匿場所 Do NOT tell Firefox to (疑いを)晴らす thes when の近くにd. This is not "the 権利" choice, but the 明言する/公表する I prefer for some 推論する/理由s.
   Passwords: I choose NOT to have Firefox 蓄える/店 passwords for me, or even to ask it it should.

In the search.勇敢に立ち向かう.com Leo answer (below), there is について言及する of a FOLDER called "...Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\" and, within it, a "folder that ends with .default (e.g., abc123.default)" which Leo calls "your profile folder". Stay 警報 to the danger of 混乱させるing "...Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\", which is a folder to 持つ/拘留する profile folders, and the "profile folder" (or folders) within that.

  1. の近くに Firefox on your old computer.

Had some success, but was told I needed admin priviledges. I thought the 使用者 I was using an admin 使用者. Sigh. Tried to drag it again, just in 事例/患者... Same problem as before.

Struggled with the 許可s on the folder. Tried to 削除する, to reinstall... "refresh"... (圧力(をかける) "Next" during the Settings/Apps/Uninstall to get past the "do you want to refresh instead") (Uninstall did not 除去する or empty %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ it 追加するd something with an even weirder 指名する... zzz.default-release1758474174890... and I couldn't 削除する it "by 手渡す", either. More consequences of the 許可s trouble on my machine, I think.

I could not 削除する the Profiles folder. Same problem as before.


Leo also gave another 選択...

"Use the built-in Firefox Sync feature to 移転 your data, which is often simpler and 確実にするs your data is 支援するd up in the cloud. To use Sync, 調印する in to your Firefox account on the new computer after 取り付け・設備."

I didn't try this approach. I don't need Sync, and it seems to introduce something extra to go wrong in my already overcomplicated machine's ソフトウェア. And another 適切な時期 for data 窃盗.

A keyboard 大型のs 公共事業(料金)/有用性 which gives you one 始める,決める of shortcuts which work across (almost) all of the apps you use

This is a 広大な/多数の/重要な 公共事業(料金)/有用性! If I type qtk on my Shortkeys 力/強力にするd machine, that 即時に changes to my email 演説(する)/住所. Quickly. Without the typos I would put in of typing it by 手渡す. But it is 有能な of much more. If I type qds, I get the 現在の date, in the 判型 of my pre-始める,決める choice. The 交替/補充 text can 含む line 料金d, backspaces, etc, etc. (All my shortkey codes begin with a q not followed by a u, and so if I type, say, qds, I will indeed be involking one of my Shortkeys. There's a 解放する/自由な-to-use-forever "Lite" 見解/翻訳/版. I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う that most readers will not have tried Shortkeys before, and if this is the 事例/患者 for you, start there. 昇格ing later is 井戸/弁護士席 worthwhile, but not necessary, unless you want more than 15 shortcuts. I've used it for many years, and is one of two programs making difficult for me to leave Windows. It does seem to be a bit tempermental under Windows 11. Sigh. Weep.

Fetch Shortkeys LITE, 任命する/導入する.

It can be 始める,決める up to work さまざまな ways. My way lets me type qda and get in return the day's date, formatted as I like it.

It created a folder called "Insight ソフトウェア 解答s" in 文書s. I had not yet done the "copy everything" 移転 from the old machine. This will need care when that happens!

"Playback"
-First tab ("General"): I tick the "Use Prefix 重要なs" choice... and make the "Prefix 重要なs" box EMPTY. Default valuyes for others is okay.

I started by doing fresh 任命する/導入する of Thunderbird on the new machine... 受託するd 示唆するd "基準" 任命する/導入する and 示唆するd folder.

Left "start now" ticked in final 任命する/導入する dialog, clicked "finish".

Gave wrong but simple answers to 指名する/ eddress/ pw as I 推定する/予想する to over-令状 these things with a profile 移転 soon. But made 公式文書,認める of what I said in 事例/患者 I need them! (xxx, xxx@myweb25sept.com/pw123). (Don't use "myweb.com"... there is one,and Thunderbird tries to get 体制/機構 info from them!.. and then had to 取り消す out of 体制/機構. There was a path.) Told it DO NOT remember password.

That "start" remained the basis of my 解答.

I use Thunderbird as a (弁護士の)依頼人 to a server 申し込む/申し出ing SMTP/POP email 議定書s. This means my old emails, sent and received, are HERE, on my machine. And that I can 支援する all of that up. And 回復する it, if necessary.

I say "think I did" because I had to do this 令状 up after the fact, leaving out many excursions 負かす/撃墜する dead ends.

After starting, as above, I shut 負かす/撃墜する the instance of Thunderbird then open.


見解/翻訳/版s...

When trying to 移転 profiles, it is always best to have both machines using the same 見解/翻訳/版 of any app.

By bad luck, when I (機の)カム try to tranfer my Thunderbird profile from one machine to another, it was in the 中央 of changes of Thunderbird update 政策. My old machine was on the old "esr" update schedule... but Thunderbird when I was doing this (22 Sep 25) had decided to do away with that 選択. Old machine was on 見解/翻訳/版 115. New machine had been given 見解/翻訳/版 143 when I did the 基準 "new 任命する/導入する".

Happily, and I've only just done this, as I 令状, and I 港/避難所't soak 実験(する)d my recently "kicked" old 取り付け・設備, but it seems to be working... Happily, all I had to do to the old machine is...

SHUT Thunderbird 負かす/撃墜する.

Do a "new 任命する/導入する" of Thunderbird, as if I didn't already have it on the system. The installer happily 認めるd that I wasn't really doing a fresh 任命する/導入する, I was doing a major 昇格. Whew!

Fingers crossed no problems 現れる!


Do update your old machine to the 見解/翻訳/版 you've just 任命する/導入するd on the new machine if they don't match. Scary, I know... but there are 警告s on the web that shirking that can lead to a Bad Result.

To change Thunderbird so it uses a different profile, you need to use the Profile 経営者/支配人. First, の近くに Thunderbird 完全に. Then, open the Run dialog by 圧力(をかける)ing Windows 重要な + R, type thunderbird.exe -p, and 圧力(をかける) Enter.

BUT BEFORE YOU DO THAT... create a folder in the profiles folder with the 指名する that you want to use for your profile.

And during the 創造 of the new profile, be sure to use the extra 選択 that lets you choose that folder as the folder for the new profile.

Using the dialog given to you by the above, "create" a new profile, of the 指名する that you were using for the profile on the old machine, and then click "Start Thunderbird" from the "choose 使用者 profile" dialog, with things 始める,決める to say "use the new profile without asking at start up".

Remember to "attach" it to the folder you made for it. You did see the "Before you do that...", I 信用? (^_^)

It will open with a "始める,決める up your 存在するing email 演説(する)/住所" again. Give it a fresh 始める,決める of frivolous values, again just to get past this page. (yy/yy@myweb25sept.com/pw123). (Don't use "myweb.com"... there is one,and Tunberbird tries to get 体制/機構 info from them!.. and then had to 取り消す out of 体制/機構. There was a path.) Told it DO NOT remember password.

Click "Continue", to make a start on a profile under the 指名する you 手配中の,お尋ね者. And on the next page click "出口 体制/機構".

Let's say your profile is called TBirdMailProfile.

You should see a folder of that 指名する at %AppData%/Thunderbird/Profiles. (aka "C:\使用者s\MY-USER-ID\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird")

Copy the folder of that 指名する from the old computer over the folder of that 指名する on the new computer. I use the 解放する/自由な Cobian backup... trying to copy big, コンビナート/複合体 folders with the Windows とじ込み/提出する Explorer does not always go 井戸/弁護士席. I hope you have Cobian or a 類似の big backup program. Or that とじ込み/提出する Explorer will work for your profile. (I have no 反対 to Cobian Reflector... but Backup was already "the devil I knew" before Reflector (機の)カム along.)

(When I went to the profiles folder on the new machine, I 設立する two profile folders already in it. I created a "FromNewInstall" folder (with a date code in the 指名する, too, and moved them to it. That hasn't come 支援する to haunt me yet, and if it doesn't, I will 削除する them 結局.)

Say a little 祈り.

再開する Thunderbird on the new computer... It should 解雇する/砲火/射撃 up with all your old emails, with you email accounts 始める,決める up, etc, etc.tbirdmprtpLa;

Once you have things working 井戸/弁護士席, CLOSE Thunderbird, and use Windows + R and thunderbird.exe -p to 削除する the superfluous profiles.

非,不,無 of this is "平易な", of course... but any email (弁護士の)依頼人 is a コンビナート/複合体 program, and you email is important I 推定する.

You may not be able to move your email quickly, even with the above guide, but 22 an 23 September 25 I spent house on the 職業, with all my mistakes and 誤った starts... and with the 令状ing up of this.

One of the 推論する/理由s I stick with mainstream 使用/適用s is that I hope that the next time I have to move to a new computer the 過程 will be more or いっそう少なく the same, and I can use this guide myself, next time!

=== Textpad: My Number One program!

I am 令状ing this webpage with Textpad. Most of my work on my Windows PC is done with Textpad. There are 得点する/非難する/20s of text editing programs, of course, but Textpad is Just So 使用者 Friendly. It Does Things 権利!

At the time I was 令状ing this section of this guide (9/25), my old machine was on Textpad vers 8, and my fresh 任命する/導入する on the old machine was Textpad vers 9.

Ordinarily, I would have 昇格d the program on the old machine to match the 見解/翻訳/版 I was going to, and I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う that with the excellent Textpad that would have worked 罰金.

But Textpad is too important to me to take ANY chances.

So I won't try to 昇格 the old machine, and I won't do all that I might have with the new 取り付け・設備 to bring it in line with my preferences. (I will need to move my clip libraries and toolbar specs carefully! But I've done it before. This will happen after the 卸売 移転 of the "文書s" folder as it was on the old machine.)

One of the 推論する/理由s I 率 Textpad 優れた is their 会議. If my old machine had been on 見解/翻訳/版 9, I would have had no hesitation in に引き続いて this guide to moving a Textpad 取り付け・設備 between machines. It seemed reasonable and do-able. And I wouldn't have to type anything out here!

So... Textpad the hard way...

Starting with Vers 8 on old machine, and fresh 任命する/導入する of Vers 9 on new machine...

Go through everything in "Configure/ Preferences", get the machines in step.

(一定の)期間ing was a shock. Very different menu. No US English (I 任命する/導入するd in the UK. Got UK English.) I've left this challenge for later.

追加するd a Pascal 文書 Class with no hassles.

Toolbars and clip libraries... to be worked on later.

You can 始める,決める 所有物/資産/財産s like font, hardcopy headers, etc, for any 文書 with a menu 利用できる by a 権利-click/所有物/資産/財産s on the 文書. I can't 解任する how to 始める,決める my preferred 選択s for a given 文書 class. Does it use whatever you last 明示するd for that class? I think so.

式のs, in September 2025, when I wrote this in the course of one of my moves between machines the 見解/翻訳/版 of Libre Office I was using on my old computer was 7.6, and the fresh 任命する/導入する was 見解/翻訳/版 25.2

No, I hadn't failed to do any updates for 10 years. I just happened to be moving to a new computer at the same time as LibreOffice's stable 解放(する)s were in a time of 移行.

One 選択 was to do an 任命する/導入する of the "25" on my old computer, "と一緒に" the old "7" 見解/翻訳/版. 明らかに this was possible, and I could open old 文書s with either.

This seemed too uncertain for me, so for this 移転 of my office 控訴 to a new machine, I will do it the hard way- by 手渡す, without trying to bring my settings across the event by anything "clever".

I have some templates. I have them in a folder 献身的な to their 貯蔵. I'm hoping that I will be able to "re-居住させる" the new 取り付け・設備 with these 簡単に by copying to the 関連した folder on the new machine in 予定 course.
