OpenOffice.org, Year Five
[A longer 見解/翻訳/版 of this article was 現在のd at OOoCon 2005 29 September.]
Overview
Let's begin with some facts and 憶測s.
OpenOffice.org probably has over 40 million 使用者s. Oh sure we can't count them. We can only 見積(る). But as of 10 days ago, we had at least so far 49 million binaries downloaded. That does not 含む binaries 分配するd 経由で the Linux distributors, 代案/選択肢 servers, CDROMs, or even P2P. It also does not 含む direct 攻撃する,衝突するs to our servers. So the number of 使用者s may be far larger or even smaller. But who's counting? Probably only Microsoft, and 裁判官ing from its market behaviour it sees us as counting a 広大な/多数の/重要な 取引,協定.
But what makes OpenOffice.org count is the 開発 and the community behind that 開発. And in the last year, as 2.0 has approached, the community have 選ぶd up the pace astonishingly. In the last month, we have been 追加するing hundreds of new 問題/発行するs per week. Child work space (CWS) activity has vastly 増加するd, as has general commit work. I 推定する/予想する the pace will even 増加する, as more groups and individuals work on OpenOffice.org, because of its 増加するd 人気.
That enduser 人気 is 全世界の, as is its 開発. Until recently, we were using a 二重の license 計画/陰謀, coupling the LGPL with the SISSL. But with 2.0 RC1, we shall use only the LGPL, no longer the SISSL. That simple change is already having the 推定する/予想するd results of 堅固に encouraging the publishing of modifications. Publishing is not the same as 共同 but it comes の近くに; so の近くに that 橋(渡しをする)ing that little gap makes sense. Thus, KaiOffice, for one, has 示すd a 乗り気 to work with us. And I 推定する/予想する that there will be many more すぐに. I call upon SOT Office, Magyar Office, RedOffice, and many others to join us: You have nothing to lose.
That's because OpenOffice.org 満足させるs a 全世界の hunger. We now have over 60 language 事業/計画(する)s, with more forming all the time. 政府s, 同様に as 会社/団体s, are looking very 本気で at OpenOffice.org 2.0. These 政府s 含む not only the small but very important US 明言する/公表する of Massachusetts, but also Canadian 州s, 同様に as many other city, 地域の and 国家の 政府s. For instance, the city of Vienna, which switched to OpenOffice.org; or the nation of Brazil, which can 誇る a strong and powerful 政府 利益/興味 and 使用者 groups, 同様に as at least 2 million 使用者s.
These 政府s and 会社/団体s want 2.0 not just because it is cheap or 解放する/自由な (support and service 契約s are not 解放する/自由な) but because the OpenDocument 判型 is essentially democratic. It is something we have seen in the last six months: That the OpenDocument 判型 for Office 使用/適用s (OpenDocument) OASIS 基準, is the 説得力のある argument used by 政府s and 企業s. Why? Because its 開いていること/寛大 means that data created using it--your 知識人 所有物/資産/財産--will remain not only yours but also legible as long as that 基準 is 持続するd, if not longer. Proprietary 基準s, on the other 手渡す, are 支配する to the whims of the market. Not so open 基準s. If there is anything that is singularly important about OOo 2.0, then, it would have to be the for Office 使用/適用s (OpenDocument) OASIS 基準.
So: It is not just a question of whether OpenOffice.org has 後継するd or not. It has. It is a question of where we want to be in the next five years and how we want to get there.
But first, a very 簡潔な/要約する and by no means 代表者/国会議員 examination of some 重要な points in the last year.
Technical 事業/計画(する)s
First off, we have a new database 構成要素, "Base." It's a relational database and will 満足させる the needs of those who want an 接近 同等(の). For more (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状), see the DBA 事業/計画(する) and the 製品 description. Then, in the middle of the year, Kay Ramme 発表するd the URE (全世界の/万国共通の Runtime 環境). Both Base and the URE are in the 2.0 codeline. によれば Kay's 告示, “The URE 許すs the usage of UNO 独立して of the OpenOffice.org 生産性 控訴. UNO is OpenOffice.org's underlying 構成要素 model, 許すing language agnostic and remote transparent 開発 of 追加する-ins, 構成要素s and 使用/適用s.” The consequences are many; for more insight, see the UNO 開発 道具 (UDK) 事業/計画(する).
In porting, ?ric Bachard and his team have done 驚くべき/特命の/臨時の work making OpenOffice.org 2.0 run 急速な/放蕩な and robustly on X11. I have created this 贈呈 and webpage using the 最新の build, which you can download from the Mac OS X download pages, under "Developer build". It took me five minutes to 任命する/導入する, one minute to copy over my favourite fonts.
Localisation
As Pavel Jan?k pointed out, in the last year, it has become easier to localise OpenOffice.org. This is good, as we will surely have at least 100 localisations by this time next year. We are still 行方不明の all the North American aboriginal tongues, for example, and if the Canadian 政府 is serious about OpenOffice.org, they, and the First Nations, will surely see the 利益 of having OpenOffice.org in Native tongues.
And who will do the localisations? I suppose one way of asking that is what is the community dynamic? How are the 利益/興味s of the stakeholders 融通するd? Simon Brouwer's example 耐えるs watching. For some time, now, he wrote me, "the Nederlands 事業/計画(する) has been "協力するing with Sun new UI and help とじ込み/提出するs translation for OpenOffice.org 2.0/ StarOffice 8.0, 株ing the work between our volunteers and a professional translation bureau. The combination of the 翻訳家's experience and our familiarity with the 製品 was of 広大な/多数の/重要な 利益 to the 質 of the translation. Most of the 事業/計画(する) is 完全にするd and we are entering the review 段階."
But besides this 過程, which depends on StarOffice 利益/興味, the community has been 刻々と localising OpenOffice.org to their language. For many, the point is to 供給する the language needed: it's easier for 使用者s to operate the 控訴 when they do not also have to learn English. Thus, Javier Sola has 達成するd かなりの success in 分配するing his Khmer localised 見解/翻訳/版 of OpenOffice.org to Cambodians; and in so doing, he is helping to create an economy.
Each of these steps makes does the 二塁打 work of creating new 消費者s and 生産者s; open source is like that. But what is universally difficult is 供給するing the 環境 for new developers. The Native-Language 事業/計画(する)s help 大いに in this, but they are only one element in the equation.
Making it better for endusers.
With 2.0 the UI is 改善するd and compatibility with MS Office is even better. But we all know that. What is perhaps いっそう少なく 井戸/弁護士席 known here are the 広大な 成果/努力s to 演説(する)/住所 the needs of the tens of millions of endusers throughout the world who are using OpenOffice.org daily. They need documentation, support, and more. 使用者s of OpenOffice.org can learn of 解放する/自由な and professional support from our new 高めるd support page (thanks to Matthew Waldrop). They can also read the 広範囲にわたる documentation, which is daily growing.
The Documentation 事業/計画(する), led by Scott Carr and Gerry Singleton, has now 後継するd in producing 容積/容量s on OpenOffice.org 2.0, 同様に as 移住 guides. Documentation 事業/計画(する) has also 始めるd a program putting together 基準 for certification and professional support that 独立した・無所属 companies may use.
Some of these guides and other 構成要素, like clipart and templates, are 分配するd for 解放する/自由な in the CDROMs anyone can buy from the many, many CDROM distributors 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)d by Alex Fisher of the CDROM sub-事業/計画(する). Alex has recently 高めるd the ISO and the web interface, making it a lot easier for 訪問者s to the 場所/位置 and 使用者s of the 製品. In 新規加入 to the CDROM 成果/努力, Deepankar Datta is progressively making the P2P sub-事業/計画(する) more 完全にする and important for 使用者s. It relies まず第一に/本来 on BitTorrent, but other 科学(工学)技術s are also coming into play. (I should 追加する that Deepankar also, along with Erwin Tenhumberg, produces the 月毎の newsletter, which is read by tens of thousands.) His 成果/努力s complement the downloads 申し込む/申し出d by the large number of download mirrors, an 群島 of servers that daily 扱う awesome 負担s. My thanks to them for their unstinting generosity and 出資/貢献 to OpenOffice.org.
What is left for the 未来?
3.0. It's time to think about doing it. There should be public discussions and 審議s about 3.0: It 関心s everyone. The community should be 伴う/関わるd in 形態/調整ing the 製品, starting now.
All 事業/計画(する)s can 伴う/関わる themselves, and some will play greater 役割s than others. The Marketing 事業/計画(する), led by Jacqueline McNally and JohnMcCreesh (Co-lead), have 終始一貫して kept OpenOffice.org in the マスコミ and on message. The challenge now is to show to the world the 十分な 能力s of the 製品 and the 力/強力にする of the community.
OOoCon 2005 showed what might come next. It showed that the 科学(工学)技術 is capacious enough to make for a 控訴 that is radically extensible and agile, and a community that in one year's time will very likely 二塁打 in size and intensity.
