David N. Wilson: Bibliographic 事業/計画(する) (Incubator) Lead

For several months now David Wilson has been the lead of the Bibliographic 事業/計画(する), which he 設立するd. 位置を示すd in the Incubator 部類, Bibliographic 目的(とする)s, as its 使節団 声明 explains, "to 供給する an 平易な to use but 包括的な bibliographic 機能(する)/行事 within OpenOffice.org. The planned bibliographic 機能(する)/行事 will utilise the 最新の open 基準s and will make the fullest use of 現れるing XML 科学(工学)技術." It is in many ways a classic Incubator 事業/計画(する), creating a 道具 that 延長するs OpenOffice.org. If you are 利益/興味d in 参加するing in the 事業/計画(する) and helping out, please join it and subscribe to the 関連した mailing 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)s.

The に引き続いて interview was 行為/行うd 経由で email Friday 2003-10-10 and lightly edited.

Tell us something about yourself, how you got 利益/興味d in OpenOffice.org and in creating the Bibliographic 事業/計画(する).

My 早期に education was in the Arts and I 熟考する/考慮するd Politics and Sociology, but moved on to (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) 科学(工学)技術 to get 雇用. I worked for 20 years in a large 会社/団体 in many areas of IT. I have done some 使用/適用 and database design, but very little programming, as I am a very slow and bad programmer.

When you reach the point when the Dilbert 風刺漫画s seem 正確に/まさに to 逮捕(する) your daily experience in 法人組織の/企業の life, it is time to move. So I left the 会社/団体 and went 支援する to University to 熟考する/考慮する history. I am 現在/一般に doing a MA 論題/論文 on the 早期に Irish sagas.

My 関与 with open-source ソフトウェア started about the time I began my history assignments. Having ソフトウェア X trash my essays got too much and I moved to Linux (no とじ込み/提出するs lost since) and StarOffice - OpenOffice.org. I quickly 設立する that OpenOffice.org did not support the citation method that my history department 需要・要求するd - Chicago Style footnote citations. Having thought about what was 要求するd to 直す/買収する,八百長をする these 欠陥/不足s I sent in a large number of enhancement requests to cover the 制限s I 設立する. The 返答 to this 一斉射撃,(質問などの)連発/ダム of suggestions was that I was 招待するd to 始める,決める up an Incubator 事業/計画(する) to develop the enhancement suggestion into a 包括的な redesign 提案. I 受託するd and the 事業/計画(する) group is in the 過程 of planning the redesign.

What is the 目的 of the Bibliographic 事業/計画(する)? What do you hope to 遂行する? Who would 利益 from this 事業/計画(する)?

The 目的 of the 事業/計画(する) is to enable OpenOffice.org 使用者s to manage bibliographic (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状), such as quotations, 言及/関連s, source 詳細(に述べる)s of pictures and charts, etc. The Bibliographic 施設 should then 許す the 使用者 to select an appropriate 基準 for the 贈呈 of that data for the 初期の citation and for the bibliographic (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs. 効果的な bibliographic support is 批判的な for academic and technical 労働者s and OpenOffice.org will not 達成する 普及した 受託 in these areas until we 改善する it.

There are many bibliographic 基準s. It is a tedious, difficult and error-傾向がある to manually 令状 all the citations and bibliographic (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs in a large 文書. And when someone is submitting a MA or PhD 論題/論文, or a 定期刊行物 article, they do not want to see it come 支援する with red 示すs from examiners or editors. The bibliographic 贈呈 過程 can be fully 自動化するd, and that is what we hope to 遂行する.

現在/一般に people who want to use the type of 施設s I have 述べるd, need to 購入(する) 商業の 製品s ? 追加する-on ソフトウェア such as Endnote, 言及/関連 経営者/支配人, Biblioscape ? or an Academic word 加工業者 such as Nota Bene. (Nota Bene has many of the features I would like to see in OpenOffice.org.) The few open-source 使用/適用s (e.g., Sixpack, Pybliographic, etc.) are much more 限られた/立憲的な than the 商業の 製品s. Many of the people who would 利益 most from bibliographic 管理/経営 ソフトウェア are students, who often cannot easily afford 商業の ソフトウェア. I am also 奮起させるd by the thought of 供給するing such useful ソフトウェア for 解放する/自由な to other people who could never afford to buy the 商業の ソフトウェア.

Another group that would 利益 from this 事業/計画(する) are University staff and 労働者s in 科学の and technical areas, many of whom work in open-source ソフトウェア 環境s.

How are you going about doing what you are doing? What is the collaborative 環境 like? Where are there problems, successes?

I started the 事業/計画(する) by canvassing my ideas on the 使用者s@openoffice.apache.org. I received やめる strong support from people around the world. So I 始める,決める up the Bibliographic Incubator 事業/計画(する) web pages to 現在の my ideas and to 地図/計画する a 開発 path. The CollabNet website structure has made it simple to 始める,決める up and manage the 事業/計画(する) web pages and discussion 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)s.

The 事業/計画(する) now has 30 登録(する)d 観察者/傍聴者 関係者s, and we have had good discussions about the 事業/計画(する). The 事業/計画(する) members are, not surprisingly, mostly university students and academics and 科学の 労働者s. Given the 会員の地位, the 技術 始める,決める of the 事業/計画(する) is 大部分は 使用者-必要物/必要条件s orientated, however, we have a some members, such Bruce D'Arcus, who are active in bibliographic 基準s 開発 and 昇進/宣伝. We also have people associated with the 事業/計画(する) who are 専門家 in XML 代表 of bibliographic data, and some who are 伴う/関わるd in the 関係のある open-source 事業/計画(する)s, Refdb and Pybliographic.

Milestones so far: Kirk 職業-Sluder has 行為/行うd, and 報告(する)/憶測d the findings of a Bibliographic 使用者 必要物/必要条件s 熟考する/考慮する with some 利益/興味ing 結論s for the 事業/計画(する). Manish Agrawal has put in lot of work into producing the Bibliographic 使用者 必要物/必要条件s and 機能の Specifications 文書s. (see the 事業/計画(する) web pages http://bibliographic.openoffice.org/ for 詳細(に述べる)s).

We have two streams of activity, short 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 事業/計画(する)s to get some small bits of 開発 work done quickly for 緊急に needed 機能(する)/行事s like bibliographic database 輸入する/輸出(する) filters. A couple of volunteers are 現在/一般に finding their way about OpenOffice.org 内部のs ーするために start on a couple of these 事業/計画(する)s.

The second stream is the total redesign and 開発 of the bibliographic 施設s. For this, we need to 確実にする that the 使用者 必要物/必要条件s and 機能の Specifications are 完全にする, and to find people able to start the technical design. The design and 開発 of the Bibliographic 施設s is an exciting 事業/計画(する) which will 含む

The 事業/計画(する)'s major problem it that we have neither yet developed the 技術s internally nor attracted 技術d 使用/適用 designers and developers to the 事業/計画(する). I am sure we will be able to 進歩 into 使用/適用 design with our 現在の 技術s we have but it will be difficult to go much その上の than that without extra 開発 技術s. That said, one of the problems in attracting developers has been the difficultly 直面するd by people in getting an understanding of the コンビナート/複合体 OpenOffice.org 開発 環境. However, the new OpenOffice.org developers' pages at http://bibliographic.openoffice.org/developer.html are a big 前進する and I think they will 大いに 補助装置 people who want to get started.

Where do you see the 事業/計画(する) going? And, how can people help?

We hope to have built some bibliographic database 輸入する and 輸出(する) filters within a few months. The redevelopment of the Bibliographic 施設s is 扶養家族 upon the tag-扱うing module plug-in 枠組み that will come with OpenOffice.org 見解/翻訳/版 2 (予定 中央の- to late-2004). This gives us some time to develop our design and 始める,決めるs a time でっちあげる,人を罪に陥れる for us to work in.

We have a 事業/計画(する) team of 技術d and knowledgeable people who understand the bibliographic 必要物/必要条件s, and have 補助装置d in developing the 概念s needed for the 使用/適用 redesign. But we still need people with direct 使用/適用 開発 技術s to 補助装置 us.

But other 技術s are also needed, such as documentation 技術s - people have requested simple bibliographic 'How To' (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状), 'Tips and Hints' etc. Even with the 現在の 限られた/立憲的な 施設s bibliographic style templates could be produced. Also people to 申し込む/申し出 激励 and advice.
