井戸/弁護士席 over 650 people have 登録(する)d for this OOoCon, the greatest number yet and and an 指示,表示する物 both of the 増加するing importance of OpenOffice.org and of course of the excellent work of the French group,which I would like to thank: for hosting and managing a 広大な/多数の/重要な 会議/協議会. Thank you, Sophie, Cedric, Isabelle, Marie, Charles, ジーンズ-Fran?ois and every one else who 与える/捧げるd and who is continuing to 与える/捧げる.
I'd also like to thank the INSA staff for their patience and 歓待.
This is an 驚くべき/特命の/臨時の 会議/協議会 and not just because of those here who have come from every curve of the globe. The event 示すs a year in which the OpenOffice.org 事業/計画(する) long passed 350,000 登録(する)d community members and is approaching at least 50 million (and probably twice that) 使用者s. Downloads over the last year have 証言するd to the 人気 of 2.0 and its 昇格s. In an 普通の/平均(する) week, about 250-300,000 people visited the download page and about 100,000 登録(する)d their copy of OpenOffice.org. Those numbers do not count all the copies 任命する/導入するd through the many Linux 配当s, from which, of course, most 使用者s 得る their Linux. The data only count page 接近s to the download pages. But the numbers are eloquent.
They speak a truth that goes beyond the fact that OpenOffice.org is 解放する/自由な: OpenOffice.org is extraordinarily good, and it's open in ways our 長,指導者 competitor―I don't have to について言及する its 指名する―cannot やめる match. Not only are we open source but we use the Open 文書 判型, or ODF, the first fully certified--by OASIS and the ISO, no いっそう少なく--open 基準 for office 文書s. As you all must know, it's even gotten to the point where that company has had to 補助金を支給する an open source 事業/計画(する) to build a "翻訳家" for ODF/Open XML とじ込み/提出するs. For them, the ODF の近くにs doors, or opens doors they'd rather keep の近くにd; for us, it 簡単に opens doors―to 政府, to be sure--but also to any (独立の)存在 関心d about the 保護 of its 知識人 所有物/資産/財産 and about the widescale availability of its 文書s. In the last year, we created a wiki page to 跡をつける major (軍隊などの)展開,配備s of OpenOffice.org, and it 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)s many, 長,指導者 の中で them French 政府 offices, but also 政府 and 法人組織の/企業の offices in Brazil, Norway, Denmark, Australia, Germany, Italy, India, Spain, Cambodia, Thailand, and others. And that does not even count those offices in Sweden, Canada, the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs, Venezuela, South Korea, Japan, 中国, and どこかよそで who are very 本気で considering migrating to the ODF and often OpenOffice.org.
説 that .doc or .xls or .ppt are de facto 産業 基準s is 簡単に not good enough to bank on and hardly a 保証(人). In contrast, our 使用者s have the 保証(人) of permanence. International 団体/死体s, not self-利益/興味d companies 支配する to the whims of the marketplace, 持続する the とじ込み/提出する 判型. The importance of this freedom―and that's what it is―cannot be underemphasized. It also 適用するs, even more so, to 橋(渡しをする)ing the 数字表示式の divide. Probably every country 認めるs the importance of giving its 居住(者)s the 道具s to 参加する in the modern economy. It used to be that learning how to read and 令状 was good enough. Now, one must also be able to create a spreadsheet. Only OpenOffice.org, which, because it is 解放する/自由な and will remain so, can uniquely give any 使用者 with 接近 to a computer the 道具s to 参加する fully and 完全に in the world's new economy.
It's no surprise then, that when I asked the 事業/計画(する) leads about the most important 業績/成就 of the last year, everyone agreed that it was the ODF.
But there were many other points について言及するd, too, and they were important. They 範囲d from technical 改良s of 利益/興味 特に to developers, such as the 重要な enhancements, によれば Andreas Martens, lead of the Word 過程ing 事業/計画(する), to the 質 of the code base. As he wrote, "root 原因(となる)s" of problems have been 直す/買収する,八百長をするd and the SW 事業/計画(する) has "started to modularize the Writer 核心 module". As he explained, "The 利益 for 使用者s will be 改善するd 安定 and 業績/成果 of Writer, the 利益 for developers will be easier 開発 and いっそう少なく regression 危険. This should lower the 障壁 to 与える/捧げる code to our 事業/計画(する)." A 類似の point about code 改良 was made by Stephan Bergmann of UNO and Mathias Bauer, of 枠組み who both 強調するd the important 改良s in code 質 that make it easier for developers. The SDK has been その上の 追加するd to, as has the apparatus for 拡張s―all of which make it easier for developers to work on the code and 与える/捧げる to the 事業/計画(する). (We've always had the 能力 of 受託するing 拡張s, plugins, what have you; it's just easier now.) Last year we heard, 明確に and loudly, that a major shortcoming of the 事業/計画(する) was that it was 悪名高くも difficult for developers to work on the code and get their patches 受託するd. We heard you. And in the last year there have been 深遠な changes made to the 過程 and code itself. It is now much easier and more efficient for developers to learn how to code for OpenOffice.org, to 令状 code, and to get their code reviewed; and if it is 受託するd, developers need not wait years; 解放(する)s with new features are coming out every 6 months.
Without question, Michael Bemmer, the Director of ソフトウェア 工学 for OpenOffice.org at Sun, has done an 驚くべき/特命の/臨時の 職業 this last year. We, the 使用者s of OpenOffice.org the 製品 and the members of OpenOffice.org the 事業/計画(する), 借りがある him our thanks.
The 改良s in code, the 前進するs, 最終的に help endusers―like me. Eric Bachard's team, for instance, has done terrific work in 前進するing OpenOffice.org for the Mac; I use it daily and love it for its 速度(を上げる) and 能力; so do the 20,000 or so who visit the Mac download page every week, I am sure. And I am 特に excited by the glimpses I have seen of it running without the X11 windowing system. I am sure this 感情 of 感謝 for having an OpenOffice.org that 作品 for you is 株d by not only those in this room who speak any of the nearly 100 languages to which it has been ported but also those using 壇・綱領・公約s besides the 32-bit 基準, 含むing, as the 不可欠の lead, 助言者, developer par excellence and friend to so many, Pavel Jan?k pointed out, to GNU/Linux on 64-bit 加工業者s.
知らせるing and helping people how to use OpenOffice.org, how to migrate to using it, how to do things with it, is the domain of the Documentation 事業/計画(する), led by Scott Carr and Gerry Singleton and 含むing members of many, many 事業/計画(する)s. The last year has seen the remarkable work of the Authors group and the 創造 of 文書s that cover, in 非常に/多数の languages, nearly every contingency a 使用者 might 直面する. No other open source 事業/計画(する) is 同様に 準備/条項d. The Documentation 事業/計画(する) also 含む/封じ込めるs templates, and I should 強調する that it will be 住宅 a 広大な/多数の/重要な many more すぐに, 同様に, I hope, 大型のs, clipart, and other things that people need, use, and want.
警報ing people of what the 製品 is, what it does and who can use it is of course the 職業 of Marketing. I think we 借りがある John McCreesh our thanks for doing a brilliant 職業 as marketing lead. The 事業/計画(する) today hardly 似ているs that of last year. There have been (選挙などの)運動をするs―the Why one comes to mind―that have placed OpenOffice.org squarely in the minds of 新聞記者/雑誌記者s throughout the world, and kept us sexy and 利益/興味ing. Not a day goes by without a story on OpenOffice.org by some 新聞記者/雑誌記者, often enough 調査するing an angle that John has dreamt up.
The marketing 成果/努力s have 自然に 含むd more than John's and Cristian Driga's 事業/計画(する). They've 含むd the Native Language 連合, its leads and members. Under the direction and 援助 of Charles Schulz, the NLC has not only 拡大するd to complement the l10n 事業/計画(する) but has taken OpenOffice.org to 地元の communities. OpenOffice.org is used by tens and tens of millions and we 借りがある our thanks to the NLC leads who, working いつかs with 政府, いつかs with small companies, have helped to make OpenOffice.org a part of the lives of millions of people. その上に, the 出資/貢献s of the NLC go 井戸/弁護士席 beyond (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) and support. As the leads of the QA 事業/計画(する) the work they and their チーム仲間s have done has been astonishing. 解任する that a short while ago it was very difficult for 伴う/関わるd 使用者s to とじ込み/提出する 問題/発行するs, let alone for the QA team to 調整する activity. That is much いっそう少なく the 事例/患者 today. The interface is much better but more importantly, the QA 過程 is now very very good. OpenOffice.org 作品 and the community 作品 together in making sure that what people download is reliable. .
Making that download possible has been the work of our 配当 team. I technically lead that 事業/計画(する), but everyone knows that the real lead is Stefan Taxhet; the 調整者/コーディネーター for OpenOffice.org on Sun's 味方する. In the last year, he has made some 公正に/かなり 劇の changes to how a 使用者 downloads OpenOffice.org. Gone are the days of total 混乱. We now use a system 持続するd by the Oregon 明言する/公表する University Open Source Lab, that makes downloading OpenOffice.org 平易な. Complementing that, 使用者s―at least thousands per week―can use our 拡大するing P2P 網状組織.
The 十分な 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of 業績/成就s is long and wonderful, far longer than this 文書 can 跡をつける.
The ODF is, as I について言及するd, important. But it's not our 運命 to be a 言及/関連 実施 of the ODF; we make the best 実施, but OpenOffice.org is a lot more than its とじ込み/提出する 判型. So where does the 未来 嘘(をつく)? It does not 嘘(をつく) in splashy 解放(する)s, like 2.0, but in 拡張s, new features 追加するd progressively, and in making the code easier to work with. If there a 3.0 waiting, it will have to do, I imagine, with a 重要な re-architecture of the codebase, to make it more open and modular. But getting there is not trivial and will not happen soon, though I am sure it will happen. In the 一方/合間, we are working, as you have heard tonight, to making OpenOffice.org 過程s more transparent and the code better.
How do I see, then, the next year? Let's imagine a fully developed 拡張s 事業/計画(する), which Laurent Godard introduced last year and which he leads. We would then have a 極小の (非,不,無-bloated) 取り付け・設備 始める,決める a 使用者 could 最初 download. The 始める,決める would have everything the 使用者 needs to get started―the 使用/適用, some templates, some clipart, dictionary, and so on. But then, let's imagine that after downloading the program tells her of 拡張s, and on visiting the 場所/位置, she learns of some that 許す her to do a lot more than she could さもなければ do. She also learns of the support offerings; of the templates, of 大型のs: she discovers all that makes OpenOffice.org the 初期の and central node of an 拡大するing universe.
What else do we need to do?
We need to continue with the 助言者ing and transparency programs, and we need to work more with developers throughout the world. Not everything can be done 経由で the Web or email or IRC; いつかs, in-person 会合s are necessary. You wouldn't be here if you didn't believe that. This is 特に the 事例/患者 for 核心 developers, who must often travel to Hamburg for direction and 助言者ing.
So, I'd like to 提案する we see about creating a 地域の developer 網状組織, where 信用d developers in 地域s throughout the world can help other 地元の developers develop for OpenOffice.org. The ultimate 影響 would be an 拡大するing 網状組織 of developers 伴う/関わるd in OpenOffice.org. I would ask of our 最初の/主要な stakeholders―Sun, Novell, Intel, Google, Red Hat and others to 補助装置; and I would also ask companies who have the 資源s to consider helping build such a 網状組織 of developers.
I also 提案する that we 積極性 押し進める OpenOffice.org (both 製品 and 事業/計画(する)) to endusers.
This means making it easier for endusers to get OpenOffice.org; it also means advertising OpenOffice.org and what it can do. Benjamin Horst, working on his own 率先 and doing やめる 井戸/弁護士席 indeed, was able to get 基金ing for an 広告 in the New York City subway paper the Metro. But that had 公正に/かなり small 影響, as the audience was 比較して small. I mean for bigger 広告s and a 連係させた approach. 歴史的に, we have 焦点(を合わせる)d on 解放する/自由な marketing―we have no real 予算―but that has got to change. People have to be 知らせるd. Yes, more 使用/適用s are using ODF, yes, even Google's Writely uses it; yes, 政府s are 傾向ing に向かって it; and yes, OpenOffice.org is used by uncounted millions. But we have not reached the tipping point. We may be の近くに, but until we are at the point where 採択 is 必然的な and where to use our competitor's 製品 is seen as an 行為/法令/行動する of wilful and selfish madness, we really cannot 残り/休憩(する). The 火刑/賭けるs our too high.
I would love that this time next year, at our next OOoCon, we can 誇る of having not just a 100 million or more 使用者s, but of 存在 able to walk into a library or cybercafe and seeing OpenOffice.org on the 審査するs of the machines, of having Google tell us that ODF 文書s 代表する a 重要な 部分 of 文書s 設立する, and of having not just passive 消費者s happy to have such a 広大な/多数の/重要な 製品 for 解放する/自由な, but 使用者s 伴う/関わるd in their 事業/計画(する), however minimally, because they believe in it and wish to その上の it.
Using something because you believe in it and 参加するing in its 創造 代表するs a change in the way people think about things, and it's a change for the better. OpenOffice.org is helping to lead that change―for peace, for a better world. You should all be proud.
