Interview: Alexandro Colorado, Co-Lead Espa?ol 事業/計画(する)

-Louis Su?rez-Potts

2004-11-30

早期に in November the city of Monterrey, Mexico, hosted the XpoLinux 会議/協議会 in the impressive Cintermex hall. With over 25 booths and three days of technical and general 贈呈s, hundreds of 訪問者s and attendees, the 会議/協議会 was a 重要な success. Thanks go to Alexandro Colorado, David Granados, and their team for putting on the 事業/計画(する), arranging パネル盤s, 贈呈s, 会合s, discussions, and everything else that goes toward making a successful 会議/協議会. I was fortunate to 現在の at the 会議/協議会 on OpenOffice.org, and I thank Alexandro for making that possible. We all look 今後 to next year, and 推定する/予想する the 会議/協議会 in 2005 to be even more important. Why? Because it is time, even necessary for Mexico to 認める open source.

(For a good (English) account of the 会議/協議会, see Duncan Mac-Vicar Prett's blog.)

The に引き続いて interview of Alexandro, who is the Co-Lead of the Espa?ol or Spanish Language 事業/計画(する) (ES) and a longtime member of OpenOffice.org, was 行為/行うd 経由で email this November, after 広範囲にわたる in-person discussions. Questions and answers were in English.

Let's begin with the question I usually start with: Tell us about yourself, what you do with OpenOffice.org, and what you do outside of OpenOffice.org.

My 関与 with OpenOffice.org started about two years ago. I realized one day that OpenOffice.org was the de facto 使用/適用 that all 解放する/自由な ソフトウェア 使用者s will 結局 use. Ever since then I started doing さまざまな work 文書ing the community and 伴う/関わるing more with OpenOffice.org different 事業/計画(する)s which 含むs marketing, dba, xml, udk, marketing-education, native-lang, authors, website and of course OpenOffice.org Español.

Outside of OpenOffice.org I am 現在/一般に working in Romania for a company 指名するd InterAKT. I work as a marketing and sales 代表者/国会議員. I use OpenOffice.org to 生成する 報告(する)/憶測s and marketing 研究 and papers. The company is very keen on open source and I am getting lots of experience with tech companies on 開発 economies. I am 現在/一般に on a one-year 契約 with them and after that I would be looking for other 職業 and 商売/仕事 適切な時期s in Europe or Asia ;-)

In conversation, you について言及するd that open source is 公正に/かなり ごくわずかの in Mexico. What explains that marginality?

The 圧力 Microsoft has put on our 政府 to "sell-out" under the 事業/計画(する) e-mexico. E-Mexico is the program that pretends to massively move the Mexican society to the '(警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) age'; it 作品 in 合同 with CCD, which are in the same train of thought as the Telecentros in Brazil. However the Mexican 見解/翻訳/版 all run on Windows, as Mr. Gates 寄付するd almost 500,000 licenses to the 事業/計画(する). The 契約 between the Mexican 政府 and Microsoft was published in Cofradia (Mexican Slashdot) just a few weeks ago. (The 文書 was scanned under "Pagina *".)

This places Linux さらに先に away from the Mexican market, 簡単に because the size of this 事業/計画(する) 代表するs a major 転換 in the way society 参加する in 科学(工学)技術. Hopefully not all is lost, as companies such as Linspire has, with 重要な success, taken the Linspire desktop to the 集まりs, as they engage with serious 科学(工学)技術 vendors in Mexico such as Elektra, even to the point of 供給するing an 告示 on 国家の TV. Elektra also 発表するd selling all their 在庫/株 on the Linspire PCs, which also 原因(となる)d more 論争 in the community, as the Gartner 報告(する)/憶測 示唆するd that most PCs with Linux 任命する/導入するd were then re-任命する/導入するd with 著作権侵害者d Windows. A 広大な/多数の/重要な article that gets all the facts together was recently published 明言する/公表するing how Mexico's 貿易(する) with Microsoft is another 'gold-for-mirrors' (it has been said that the Aztec 貿易(する) with spanish Conquistadores gold for mirrors).

In particular, you 焦点(を合わせる)d on the 欠如(する) of a developer culture, such as 存在するs, say, in Spain, or for that 事柄 in Germany. What can be done by OpenOffice.org (OOo) to 増加する the depth of that culture?

As for the 全体にわたる developer way of thinking:

The ES 事業/計画(する) is very large and the 中心 of all Spanish language 開発. It 調整するs, thus, work 存在 done in Spain, Mexico, Peru, and other parts of Latin America. As one of the leads, along with Richard Holt, of the 事業/計画(する), what would you 見積(る) are the most important 問題/発行するs 直面するing it?

What countries in Latin America use open source?

Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Cuba, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Brazil,

What 商売/仕事s in Mexico?

CFE (electricity company) is a very 井戸/弁護士席 known Linux 使用者, PEMEX has been very skeptical but.... It's take on Linux has been 衝突d, so.... Telmex has also been more friendly to Linux 使用者s, as the support team doesn't hesitate when you tell them you are running Linux for your 関係. The problem is of course, 欠如(する) of Linux companies, as they can't afford large-規模 昇進/宣伝 and 宣伝. (XpoLinux might be a THE 解答.)

You were one of the 重要な persons who 組織するd the very successful XpoLinux 会議/協議会; who was your partner?

David Granados was my partner in putting together the event; he did most of the dirty 職業 of 納得させるing people and companies to sponsor the event. I admire him a lot since even though XpoLinux 需要・要求する a lot of his time he still manage to 拡大する to new 商売/仕事 投機・賭けるs.

The 会議/協議会 的d 商売/仕事s. Do you think they got the message?

Testimonials have been 広大な/多数の/重要な; and 研究 done by Cintermex (the place we held XpoLinux) showed an 優れた 80% of people agreed to come next year. Also we 設立する that more than 70% 関係者s made some 肉親,親類d of 商売/仕事 covering their expenses and are more than happy to sponsor next year's event. We also have got several 提案s for new 事業/計画(する)s. We are 現在/一般に working on some 利益/興味ing 事業/計画(する)s that might just make XpoLinux bigger and better. We 推定する/予想する XpoLinux to keep making news beyond the actual event, as we will not only 解放(する) a ビデオ of the event but also work on some XpoLinux-関係のある 味方する 事業/計画(する)s.

What would you want for the next 会議/協議会?

XpoLinux was a unique event in many ways: it 控訴,上告d both to 商売/仕事s and students. For the next 会議/協議会, we would like to show some "on-場所/位置" Linux 解答. Most of the 商売/仕事 people that …に出席するd the event knew something about Linux; others worked with Linux or were considering 適切な時期s to move to Linux. But we need 固める/コンクリート examples. Having knowledgeable people explaining 解答s and making 経済的な sense out of (軍隊を)展開する,配備するing Linux will make their open source 戦略 easier to しっかり掴む.

I would also want more technical content that would 控訴,上告 to the system 行政官/管理者s of companies. The SysAdmin is usually the 重要な 前線-man to turn a company の上に open source. 政府 should also be conscious about とじ込み/提出する accessibility, open 基準s. I'd like finally for there to be a taste of what is going on with open source and open 判型s across the world.
