Interview: Rhoslyn 調査するs, Welsh Language 事業／計画（する） Lead

The Welsh Native Language 事業／計画（する）, lead by Rhoslyn 調査するs, is one of the new language 事業／計画（する）s reaching out to communities 歴史的に marginalized by ソフトウェア companies. Let's start with an introduction. Tell us about yourself, your team, and what you are doing on OpenOffice.org (OpenOffice.org). And, for 状況's sake: What do you do outside of OpenOffice.org?
I'm Rhoslyn 調査するs and I'm the Leader of the OpenOffice.org Welsh Native Language 事業／計画（する） . 含むd in the team are Dewi Jones and David Chan, we've also had 援助 from a number of people 含むing Delyth 調査するs and Gruffudd 調査するs.
Dewi and I had had a lot of experience in translating ソフトウェア; Mozilla, Abiword, Mandrakelinux, etc, and OpenOffice.org appeared to be a natural 開発. David joined us during the 初期の 行う／開催する／段階s of the 事業／計画（する） and 補助装置d Dewi with builds and technical 問題／発行するs 同様に as 連絡事務 with Pavel Jan?k [co-lead of the l10n 事業／計画（する）. Ed]. Dewi was also 伴う／関わるd in the 開発 of OO dico and enabling Cysgliad, the Welsh language （一定の）期間 and grammar checker, to work within OpenOffice.org and StarOffice. I translated OpenOffice.org over an 18-month period using poEdit and Cysill and Cysgair.
Delyth and Gruffudd are my wife and son and worked on checking 条件, idioms and the language 登録（する） of the translation. Gruff has done the graphic design of the CD and subs the Meddal.com website. He introduced me to PHP-核兵器, which I hate.
Not 公式に part of the 'team' but 伴う／関わるd in the general 開発, was Ned Thomas, Mercator. Ned had the idea of making use of European Union 客観的な One money to enable the 開発 of bilingual Openoffice.org. Ned and his team worked to 伸び（る） the support of many 地元の 当局 fro this 事業／計画（する）, which was successful in 存在 awarded £300,000 in August 2004 for translation and 開発 over the next two years.
Outside OpenOffice.org I work as 政策 and 業績／成果 office within Social Services 地元で. Dewi 長，率いるs the E-Welsh 部隊 at Canolfan Bedwyr, University of むちの跡s, Bangor, where Gruff 作品 at the Welsh Place 指名する 部隊, and David 作品 as a ソフトウェア engineer at Clocksoft in Birmingham. I also run Meddal.com, our repository and marketplace for Welsh language ソフトウェア.
Why is a Welsh localization of OpenOffice.org important? That is, what 国家の, political or cultural goals does it serve?
The 見通し we had was that OpenOffice 供給するd a unique selling point for the bilingual society we have in むちの跡s. That selling point was to 供給する an office 控訴 that could be 利用できる for individuals, organizations and 機関s in Welsh or in English. No other provider appeared to have an 意向 of 供給するing such a 一括 and a number of organizations were looking to move from outdated 控訴s or were unimpressed with their 現在の provider on grounds of 安定 or price. With the 現在の build of OpenOffice.org we 申し込む／申し出 a （一定の）期間 checker and possible functionality of Cysgliad and To Bach, which is a Welsh accent input program by Draig 科学（工学）技術s. We've also tried encouraging other Celtic language 事業／計画（する）s to start their own OpenOffice.org 事業／計画（する）s.
What 科学技術の challenges have you 遭遇（する）d? Has the 事業／計画（する） helped you 打ち勝つ them? (or not?) How would you 改善する things?
We were 大いに 補助装置d by Pavel Jan?k, and the availability of .po とじ込み／提出するs for translation made use of translation memory and consistency of terminology possible. Dewi and David are wizards....
Microsoft is 報道によれば coming out with a Welsh localization. In what ways does the OpenOffice.org Welsh localization 異なる? "異なる" can 言及する to 科学（工学）技術 同様に as politics. The two are not that separate. For instance, Microsoft's 科学（工学）技術 is predicated on a の近くにd 環境, OpenOffice.org's open.
Yes, the Welsh 見解／翻訳／版 of MS XP and Office will be 開始する，打ち上げるd before Christmas. Much of their localization is based on the translation of OpenOffice.org: We 供給するd the translation company with our terminology 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる）s and copies of OpenOffice.org for their 状況 use. We were keen to develop a 標準化するd 始める，決める of Welsh language computer terminology, and 手配中の，お尋ね者 to 避ける the poor translations by other open-source 翻訳家s.
If you were 説得するing a 地元の Welsh 政府 (city, 地域) to choose OpenOffice.org over MSFT Office, what are the 重要な arguments you would use?
The bilingual and open-source nature of the 製品 would be the main attractions for 地元の 政府, the ability to easily switch language and the availability of （一定の）期間 checkers, etc, is a 限定された 特別手当. The ability to 共同で develop the ソフトウェア to their own 株d needs is certainly something 地元の 当局 could do with. Cost may also be an 問題／発行する, but inertia may negate that.
How can others help you in your work? That is, do you need help QA'ing, translating, 分配するing, marketing?
We are a small group and could do with 援助 with marketing. Ned's 事業／計画（する） will for the medium 称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語 補助装置 with the translation and in developing a handbook, etc. I believe that there is a market out there for a multilingual CD with OpenOffice.org and Mozilla at a reasonable price, say £10 in 地元の supermarkets, and どこかよそで. There is a large market of people who do not know how to download a program or visit specialist computer shops. We also need to 説得する computer 建設業者s to 含む OpenOffice.org on hard 運動s and internet providers to 含む OpenOffice.org on their CDs as tasters.
Finally, what do you like (or dislike) about OpenOffice.org? What would you 勧める changed?
むちの跡s is a bilingual country, and very few organizations have 100% Welsh （衆議院の）議長s. Therefore it's not ideal having to 任命する／導入する two separate copies of OpenOffice.org, one for English and one for Welsh. We'd rather have a 選び出す／独身 見解／翻訳／版 which can be started in either language, but with settings and 文書 history 存在 株d between both languages. The Debian 事業／計画（する） has done 価値のある work in this area, and OpenOffice.org 2.0 will be a big step 今後s. Ideally, in the long run, we'd like to switch between English and Welsh at the click of a button, without 再開するing OpenOffice.org. Then, if a Welsh （衆議院の）議長 has a problem, English-speaking technical support staff can come over, click to change the language, and を取り引きする the problem. This will be useful in the US Spanish > English, too.
