Interview: Davide Dozza and Riccardo Losselli, Leads, Italian Language 事業/計画(する)
2004-11
In a conversation the first 十分な day of the OpenOffice.org 会議/協議会 in Berlin last September, I had the luck of 会合 with Davide Dozza and Riccardo Losselli, the leads of the Italian Language 事業/計画(する) (IT). As some members of the community are aware, the IT 事業/計画(する) has worked on 供給するing not only support for OpenOffice.org and marketing the 使用/適用 but also on customizing the 控訴 for the Italian market. The customization essentially (機の)カム 負かす/撃墜する to stripping the binaries of all proprietary elements, in this 事例/患者 Java. (OpenOffice.org does not need Java.) This customized 見解/翻訳/版 of OOo was never, however, 解放(する)d.
As I learned in my discussion, the IT 事業/計画(する) has been working with several other 圧力(をかける)ing 問題/発行するs, which Davide and Riccardo were happy to explain to me. The に引き続いて interview was 行為/行うd 経由で e-mail late last month.
Please tell us about what you do and how you got 伴う/関わるd in the Italian language 事業/計画(する).
DAVIDE: I'm おもに 伴う/関わるd in co-ordinating people, in 支持するing OpenOffice.org along the country and managing some activities like QA 実験(する)s and OpenOffice.org 顧問s database. I usually try to ロビー OpenOffice.org by binding 関係s with 政府 会・原則s.
RICCARDO: I got 伴う/関わるd in the Italian group by Gianluca Turconi, the former Italian Group leader. The 誘発する was an article by him, published on the OpenOffice.org 場所/位置. At the time the Italian 事業/計画(する) was VERY small, i would dare to say that there was Gianluca only. At first i was おもに 伴う/関わるd in marketing activities, and most of them where in the 全世界の marketing 事業/計画(する), later i joined Davide as 事業/計画(する) co-lead. For my work i'm in 接触する with small 商売/仕事 and 私的な 顧客s, and of course i 支持する OpenOffice.org の中で them; also we have some やめる active Linux 使用者 Groups in northern Italy, and they often 招待する me to talk about OpenOffice.org. I try both to help the 事業/計画(する) and develop 関係s between the Italian group and other Native langs by 参加するing in the most important computer fairs when possible. It's a very good 適切な時期 to 会合,会う people, both 使用者s and the OpenOffice.org "同僚s" you have been talking (i should say e-mailing) almost daily. I'm also 利益/興味d and 伴う/関わるd in the Mac porting 成果/努力s, and i'm the Mac 接触する for the Italian 事業/計画(する).
How large is the IT 事業/計画(する)?
DAVIDE: At the moment we have about 15 people 活発に 伴う/関わるd into the 事業/計画(する). They are 伴う/関わるd in documentation 管理/経営, web mastering, mail 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) (ML) support, marketing, 圧力(をかける) 関係 管理/経営, localization building, 合法的な support, OpenOffice.org 支持するing, school support, etc., etc. On ML we have about 200 加入者s.
RICCARDO: .... and this translates into the Italian 事業/計画(する) 存在 one of the most active Native Lang 事業/計画(する)s.
The IT 事業/計画(する) has 伸び(る)d 重要な importance in the Italian open-source world. In conversation, you について言及するd that many 地元の companies and 政府s have chosen to use OpenOffice.org. Can you (a)手の込んだ/(v)詳述する more on this? Which 地元の organizations have made the choice?
DAVIDE: The 革命 begins from the 底(に届く). A lot of small companies and 地元の public 行政s have migrated or are migrating to OpenOffice.org. It is very difficult to count all stories because (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) runs better from 最高の,を越す to 底(に届く) and not 副/悪徳行為 versa. In my experience I have heard about 会議s such as Argenta, Maranello, Montale, San Doligo della Valle, Ozzano dell'Emilia, San Lazzaro di Savena that have migrated and others such as Pavia, Genova's and Bolzano 州 that are starting a 移住 to OpenOffice.org. And many others are considering to migrate. Also in schools we have やめる good successes, but there it's a little bit more difficult to migrate, because of competitors' 教育の 政策s. There are also small and medium companies that are migrating, not only for a question of money but even more often for a question of freedom. In contrast, large companies are 利益/興味d in a brand so they look with 利益/興味 to StarOffice. We have 重要な success stories like the Carabinieri (the italian 軍の police) and some important italian 保険s and banks.
RICCARDO: I cannot speak for big or public companies, as i don't have the same 接触するs with them as Davide has. But speaking about small companies and home 使用者s, during these four years i've seen an 増加するing 利益/興味 and use of OpenOffice.org. Most of my small 商売/仕事 顧客s after trying OpenOffice.org switched from their previous office automation 控訴 to OpenOffice.org. The ones who didn't usually had no real technical 推論する/理由 for not doing so.
And, as a follow up, why did they (choose OpenOffice.org)?
DAVIDE: In general the cost is the most attractive feature. Definitely. But, 特に public 行政s and large accounts, look to OpenOffice.org as a choice of freedom; a freedom that will last. In fact by 可決する・採択するing 解放する/自由な (as in thought) 判型s like the OpenOffice.org OASIS 判型, people are given 永久の 解放する/自由な 接近 to (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) 含む/封じ込めるd in 文書s without the worry about licenses and 特許s.
RICCARDO: Most of them (chose OpenOffice.org) because of costs, at least at first. It's not uncommon for a small company to have just one license , or even no licenses at all for the most ありふれた program it uses. Piracy is a 罪,犯罪, and it is 存在 演説(する)/住所d as such, every year with more and more strength. People are starting to understand that using 著作権侵害者d ソフトウェア will in the end cost money, instead of saving. It will either cost in 料金s, or 欠如(する) of support, or result in programs 存在 discontinued. Using 著作権侵害者d ソフトウェア in the first place 傷つけるs the ones who use it. On the other 手渡す, i can understand that for a small company it's not 平易な to spend in ソフトウェア two or three times what it's spent in 金物類/武器類. OpenOffice.org gives them the 可能性 to have what they need, and even more, without spending money on licenses, and keeping it 合法的な. Unfortunately, the really important part, which is the freedom of data 判型s, is something that's usually no caught by them, at least until you have some very serious problems that lead you to 存在 unable to use your last 10 years of data.
You also discussed that large companies, 地域の and 明言する/公表する 政府s have been 気が進まない too 利用する OpenOffice.org. Why? What has been the 障害?
DAVIDE: I think the main 障害 for large accounts is who takes the 責任/義務. In my experience OpenOffice.org 移住 is always 行為/行うd under the 監督 of a person who 受託するs to be liable for the activity. But it is not always the 事例/患者 that people have the courage to take these step and they prefer to rely on a brand. Another one is the 成果/努力 that a large company has to make for 職員/兵員 re-training [and technical 精製するing], ーするために 保証(人) that their 作品 are fully interoperability with the 残り/休憩(する) of the world. These activities are やめる expensive and difficult to 評価する without professional support.
RICCARDO: Again, i cannot speak for big companies, but for the small ones. There are few 推論する/理由s that can be 要約するd by the fact that for some companies switching is a troubled 過程. It doesn't 事柄 what you switch, it's 簡単に seen as a trouble. They wouldn't just switch to OpenOffice.org, as they do not switch to any new 見解/翻訳/版 of Microsoft Office too, or Microsoft Windows, and not for technical or economical 推論する/理由. It's not even a ソフトウェア 関係のある problem, you get the same problem when you change 金物類/武器類 (or a fax or a photocopier). Some companies use 貧しく designed third-party ソフトウェア that relies ひどく on the presence of a 明確な/細部 見解/翻訳/版 of Microsoft Office, and this makes it impossible to switch, even to a different 見解/翻訳/版 of Microsoft Office. Lastly, there are those few 状況/情勢s where OpenOffice.org still cannot 演説(する)/住所 their needs, like an MS 接近 代用品,人. [Editor: OpenOffice.org 2.0 含むs an MS-接近 代用品,人.]
I'm happy to say that it's very uncommon to find problems when switching to OpenOffice.org, and usually the problems are 限られた/立憲的な to the small differences in OpenOffice.org menus and interface compared to the previous ソフトウェア. Nothing that cannot be solved by a question 経由で e-mail though.
How can the OpenOffice.org 全体にわたる 事業/計画(する) help you here? For instance, what marketing 成果/努力s can we 与える/捧げる to?
DAVIDE: Marketing should 強調する/ストレス the 判型s and freedom not the cost 貯金. Marketing has to 堅固に support the idea that "(警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) is value" and "(警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) 所有物/資産/財産 resides into 解放する/自由な 判型s". This is 特に so with companies that make their 商売/仕事 on 国民s' (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状). Unfortunately, gratuity is often 交流d as 証拠不十分. Marketing should also 主張する on success stories by 供給するing best practices.
RICCARDO: I 完全に agree with Davide on this one.
Any other points you feel it is important to bring up?
DAVIDE: It's very difficult to compete with companies that have a lot of 資源s for ロビーing. And ロビーing is our biggest problem with central 行政. This is also harder when you can't 現在の yourself as an (独立の)存在. I think it should be very useful to try to aggregate people around a 認めるd 創立/基礎/協会. This would be very helpful for ロビーing the 控訴.
RICCARDO: Again, i agree with Davide.... i would also 追加する, that not having such an (独立の)存在 makes very difficult for us to manage some 状況/情勢s (like 寄付s, 共同s and so on) in a smooth way.
