Summer of Code: C?dric Bosdonnat

Summer of Code: C?dric Bosdonnat

-Louis Su?rez-Potts

2005-09

Google's Summer of Code program (SoC) was "designed to introduce students to the world of open source ソフトウェア 開発", and it worked. Successful 関係者s were given a cash reward, but from the accounts 供給するd by those 関係者s, the cash was the least of the reward. The acquired and community (機の)カム in first. OpenOffice.org was and is not only a fascinating if challenging codebase to work with but the community made the 成果/努力 fun, 刺激するing, and in the words of one 回答者/被告, "the best summer of my life."

Over the next week and half, I'll be publishing a short 一連の accounts by the 関係者s. I begin today with that of C?dric Bosdonnat, who worked on an (太陽,月の)食/失墜 plugin for OpenOffice.org. I asked a 始める,決める of questions 経由で email over a period of several weeks, the first asking about the Google SoC 事業/計画(する), the 残りの人,物 follow-ups.

Tell us about yourself and how you got 利益/興味d and 伴う/関わるd in OpenOffice.org....

I'm 現在/一般に student at INSA, Computer Sciences department (国家の 学校/設ける of 適用するd Sciences) in Lyon, フラン. The day before I come to the OOoCon 2005, I'll enter in the 5th and last year of this engineer school and have my twenty second birthday. Outside my OOo 投資 I take care of my fianc?e, learn 激しく揺する n' roll, run, and do many other things.

動機づけるd by 解放する/自由な ソフトウェア since four years, I have done some things at school to bring it to other students computers. All my OpenOffice.org 投資 story dates from December 2004, when I began to 令状 an OOo 文書 model with 前進するd 大型のs. Afterwards, I got more and more 接触するs with the Francophone 事業/計画(する) and J?rgen community. Only on the 16th of July (2 days before the Google SoC 使用/適用 最終期限), did I read an email from Sophie Gautier 現在のing this 事業/計画(する). It was the beginning of a beautiful story: Summer of Code.

I worked and work again on an (太陽,月の)食/失墜 plugin that helps OpenOffice.org 開発. A t the beginning it was difficult to decide which end of the rope I had to take. J?rgen helps me a lot to define which features would be very important which could be 器具/実施するd afterwards.

Now the plugin could be used for small 事業/計画(する)s and supports basic features like syntax 最高潮の場面ing, new 事業/計画(する) and とじ込み/提出する basic wizards and SDK configuration. The 優先 was given to the wizards and the 使用者 help: that is why there are many ways to configure the SDKs and OOo 取り付け・設備s. The next steps until the end of the google summer of code will be to 追加する a type browser to let the 使用者 choose の中で the OpenOffice.org services and interfaces 述べる in the API. This will lead to the 創造 of new wizards such new 極小の 構成要素 or new 使用/適用.

I will continue to develop this plugin after the Google Summer of Code to bring it to a 十分な-featured system. However, I will not continue to develop at such a 速度(を上げる) because of all my other activities. There is an open door to people who wants to internationalise the plugin and help me to 文書 it's use. I 計画(する) to 令状 a how-to internationalise the plugin to help people in this 仕事. Of course I will give them an example by 供給するing the French language pack.

The developed plugin will help the developers create new UNO 構成要素s. For the moment, there is a basic 構成要素 wizard and a new Service wizard. The code produced is a basis for その上の 開発s there are only a few steps to get a new interface wizard, for example. I'm working on this, but a new Calc or Draw 追加する-on is planned. Some people on the dev@api.openoffice.org 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) are 利益/興味d in helping me. In a 結論, I'd say that this is good: I won't be the only developer for this 事業/計画(する)...

Why did you choose this topic?

At the beginning I 手配中の,お尋ね者 to try to create some pieces of code to learn OOo Java programming. I checked if there was something 存在するing to help me developing with (太陽,月の)食/失墜, and saw that there was already a 事業/計画(する) with NetBeans: thus I 提案するd the idea.

How did the 助言者ing work?

I was fully 自治権のある on the (太陽,月の)食/失墜 開発, but J?rgen helped me for problems like Bootstrapping OOo for a Java program, how to 統合する the SDK in the plugin. We often communicated with 私的な email; however, some problems where submitted to dev@api.openoffice.org. J?rgen and Laurent Godard 答える/応じるd to me the problems they saw and helped me to 改善する the 使用者 interface of the plugin.

What difficulties did you 遭遇(する)?

The main difficulties were with bootstrapping OOo, because I get some problems that J?rgen couldn't 再生する. This led me to find one or two bugs and 服従させる/提出する them to J?rgen (or dev@api).

What 科学(工学)技術s did you need to know?

Java and the (太陽,月の)食/失墜 API were the most important 科学(工学)技術s to know. Afterwards, there were no really 明確な/細部 科学(工学)技術s to learn (of course I had to read the OOo 2.0 SDK).

Did the Google SoC work 統合する with your schoolwork?

No. There was no 関係 at all with my schoolwork: I 簡単に had two 職業s this summer: a 義務的な internship (for school) and the Google Summer of Code.

Thanks to C?dric and Google for sponsoring the (Northern 半球) Summer of Code! In the next few days, 主要な up to OOoCon 2005, I'll publish other interviews of student developers who had a 広大な/多数の/重要な summer with OpenOffice.org thanks to Google's Summer of Code.
