Summer of Code: Andrzej Wytyczak-Partyka

-Louis Su?rez-Potts

2005-09

Google's Summer of Code program (SoC) was "designed to introduce students to the world of open source ソフトウェア 開発", and it worked. Successful 関係者s were given a cash reward, but from the accounts 供給するd by those 関係者s, the cash was the least of the reward. The knowledge acquired and community 参加するd in (機の)カム in first. OpenOffice.org was and is not only a fascinating if challenging codebase to work with but the community made the 成果/努力 fun, 刺激するing, and in the words of one 回答者/被告, "the best summer of my life."

Over the next week and half, I'll be publishing a short 一連の accounts by the 関係者s. I begin today with that of Andrzej Wytyczak-Partyka, who developed an 拡張 to OOo's 枠組み enabling tabbed browsing of 文書s; his work was done in the 枠組み 事業/計画(する). I asked a 始める,決める of questions 経由で email over a period of several weeks, the first asking about the Google SoC 事業/計画(する), the 残りの人,物 follow-ups.

Tell us about yourself and how you got 利益/興味d and 伴う/関わるd in OpenOffice.org....

I'm a 3rd year computer science student at the University of 科学(工学)技術 in Wroclaw, Poland. I'm also a 1st year student of 薬/医学 at the Wroclaw 医療の University. I'm 21 years old. I got 利益/興味d in OOo because it's the biggest, most feature-rich open-source office 控訴. I use it on a day-to-day basis for my school 報告(する)/憶測s, charts and all other paperwork I do. I volunteered for the 開発 of the Tab Browsing feature because I love this idea inside Firefox and I thought that along with a lot of other people, I would feel the same about tabs inside OOo. There's still some work to do until this reaches the mainstream 見解/翻訳/版, but the goals for the Summer of Code 事業/計画(する) were 遂行するd and there is a 一括 for a 明確な/細部 OOo 見解/翻訳/版 that 供給するs the Tab Browsing functionality.

Who was your 助言者?

My 助言者 was Andreas Schluens.

What are you thoughts on the Summer of Code?

First of all, when I 設立する out about SoC, 早期に June, I was in the middle of my exams and I was really busy 準備するing for them. Just a 簡潔な/要約する look at the プロの/賛成のs and 反対/詐欺s of 参加するing was enough to decide I had to arrange some time for 令状ing a 提案. I (機の)カム up with a couple of ideas and some 概念s on how to 現在の them.

I submitted the 提案s and waited 根気よく. The (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) coming from Google about the number of 提案s (8000 ?) didn't seem very 約束ing, so when I got my first 拒絶 notice I wasn't really surprised; then the second one (機の)カム. But then, I got a different email, and I felt a little 急ぐ of adrenaline in my veins. I opened it, and 設立する out that I was 受託するd for working on a 事業/計画(する) for OpenOffice.org! In a couple of days, I was 接触するd by my 助言者ing organisation with (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) about the 助言者 I had been 割り当てるd to and some 専門的事項s.

From the very first moments up to the end of my work everyone on the maillist 関係のある to my 事業/計画(する) has been very helpful and 来たるべき. I 借りがある my 助言者 - Andreas Schluens - special thanks. He helped me with all my problems, gave me (疑いを)晴らす explanations and examples when I got lost somewhere along the road, and was also very encouraging and 高く評価する/(相場などが)上がるd, with "you're going the 権利 way!" and "広大な/多数の/重要な 職業!" comments !

I guess one of personal 問題/発行するs I had to を取り引きする was a 欠如(する) of self-信用/信任. Although it wasn't my first 事業/計画(する), I had never worked with something as big as OpenOffice.org nor had I sought 是認 of my work with someone who has a lot better understanding of and experience in programming than I do.

I think Google has given us as much support in this 事柄 as it could, and there's nothing bad I can say about those guys. They did an awesome 職業 with the Summer of Code, they even opened up a 100 more slots for even more students to be able to work on Open Source. They're giving away over 2 million USD ! That's just crazy.

All I can hope for now is that they'll be 持つ/拘留するing more events like this, and that, maybe, I'll be 受託するd again... !

Thanks to Andrzej and Google for sponsoring the (Northern 半球) Summer of Code! In the next few days, 主要な up to OOoCon 2005, I'll publish other interviews of student developers who had a 広大な/多数の/重要な summer with OpenOffice.org thanks to Google's Summer of Code.
