The 明言する／公表する of Open Source

LinuxWorld Expo this year was far more sparsely …に出席するd than 以前--no surprise. However, the OpenOffice.org 展示（する） 証明するd immensely popular. As Josh Berkus and Michael Dean have already 報告（する）／憶測d, the OpenOffice.org 展示（する） was a 粉砕するing success. In fact, from what I could tell, it was easily one of the most popular 展示（する）s on the 床に打ち倒す, and one of the few to draw a constant （人が）群がる. Hats off to Zaheda Bhorat and Max Lanfranconi, who tirelessly 乗組員を乗せた the booth and gave brilliant demonstrations.
パネル盤: Complacency and 関心
The パネル盤 肩書を与えるd, "The 明言する／公表する of Open Source" 証明するd 利益／興味ing for 推論する／理由s I didn't やめる 心配する. The often-animated conversation between パネル盤 members Linus Torvalds (Linux, Transmeta), Brian Behlendorf (Apache, CollabNet), Larry Augustin (VA Linux; moderator), Jeremy Allison (Samba), and Dirk Hohndel (SuSe) 示唆するd that Open Source had reached a new level, いつかs of absurdity, and that there were dangers ahead it would be foolish to ignore.
I was fortunate to be there. The hall--a 巨大（な） 地階 room in San Francisco's exuberantly postmodern Marriott Hotel--was packed, with several 列／漕ぐ／騒動s of people standing in the 支援する and in the 後部 aisles. To 追加する to the theatrics, two 巨大（な） 審査するs, on either 味方する of the proscenium, showed the 討論者／講師s, and we could all 明確に see the 向こうずね of sweat as the cameras （機の）カム in の近くに.
There was no need to sweat: the パネル盤 was before an adoring （人が）群がる. When Linus walked in, for example, everyone 爆発するd in 賞賛 (which he 受託するd good naturedly) and Larry Augustin tried to make the discussion friendly and supportive of Open Source.
Which is when the whole パネル盤 seemed to me to enter a surreal landscape. Hadn't VA Linux, which Larry runs, just 問題／発行するd its 最新の gloom 報告（する）／憶測, in which it 明言する／公表するd that parts of it were going proprietary? And hasn't the whole IT world and the optimistically 肩書を与えるd "New Economy" been を受けるing such painful 収縮過程s as to make us all think the game might be over, or at the very least, the same old? Yet 非，不，無 of this was について言及するd. I sat there bemused, surrounded by hundreds of the faithful, and thought of a programmer friend I had just 遭遇（する）d who had been laid off and, two months later, had still not 設立する a 職業.
Perhaps there was a 推論する／理由 for the 半端物 silence on the 問題／発行する of the economy. Perhaps Larry just thinks that a laid-off programmer is a 資源 suddenly 所有するd of a wealth of time for doing Open Source work?
Be that as it may, this 戦略 of see-no-bad sat 井戸／弁護士席 with Linus, who was perfectly happy with making ludicrously 楽観的な blandishments about how Open Source had nothing to worry about and how it would vanquish everything; in fact, he even 申し込む／申し出d the 半端物 opinion that Uncle Sam (the US 政府) would 保護する us all from the depredations of monopolies like Microsoft, if for no other 推論する／理由 than because the U. S. 政府 would not 許す Microsoft to step on its turf.
Jeremy Allison agreed with Linus, that Open Source had nothing to worry about, and was 平等に charming and vague about what Open Source was, if not what it meant. (It means good.) But both Dirk Hohndel and Brian Behlendorf saw Open Source in a decidedly more 攻撃を受けやすい position, and both argued that Open Source is not やむを得ず the end-all and be-all that Linus and Jeremy want it to be. The differences were philosophic and practical.
On the one 手渡す, Linus and Jeremy see the success of Open Source as predicated on personal 決定／判定勝ち（する）s. Open Source will 勝利，勝つ out, in the end, because 使用者s will prefer to use it. This picture of a pure, laissez-faire meritocracy 影響を受けない by 独占主義的な realities or by the 決意s of 知識人 所有物／資産／財産 did not impress Brian and Dirk. Importantly, however, the 討論者／講師s did agree on the need for a disciplinary 機械装置 within Open Source that would 保存する it. But it was left 不明瞭な whether such a 装置, such as the GPL, was enough in itself. And it was also 不明瞭な just how 望ましい a world in which all 知識人 所有物／資産／財産 was 治める／統治するd by Open Source licenses was, with Brian and Dirk both 表明するing the advantages of having some proprietary licenses.
But much of the discussion 中心d on a topic Brian raised 早期に on: The specter of Microsoft. He 明言する／公表するd that Microsoft not the Linux kernel or Linux 使用／適用s changed the nature of Open Source in the last year, by 開始する，打ち上げるing its 悪名高い (and distracting) attack on Open Source and 同時に (and insidiously) working to centralize systems 経由で .NET and its パスポート service. As Brian saw it, Open Source should not, cannot, sit plumply on its laurels: it must continue the good fight, with 新たにするd vigor, else Microsoft will 遂行する a 静かな クーデター, in which the open Internet becomes の近くにd.
Although Brian was partly successful in getting the other 討論者／講師s to discuss something important, both Jeremy and Linus essentially 解任するd Microsoft as somehow having already lost the war, not just the 戦う／戦い. Their 推論する／理由ing went something like this: Linux is now 平易な to use, there are many 罰金 製品s out there geared to end-使用者s and not geeks, so why should anyone want to use 高くつく／犠牲の大きい 製品s from the Beast of Redmond? Microsoft, in this reading, is so yesterday.
Complacency is not an 選択. Linus and Jeremy could smugly, casually, 表明する the greatest 信用／信任 that Open Source would 勝利，勝つ, because people need only say, NO to Microsoft, but they are wrong. 代案／選択肢s to Microsoft may 存在する but Microsoft is not only a 製造者 of desktop 製品s. Indeed, as Brian 強調するd, its Internet activities are in fact far more insidious and 潜在的に more 破壊的な of Open Source than, say, Microsoft Office.
Centralization and proprietary 支配（する）／統制する are where the danger lies, and that is what Microsoft is all about. Microsoft is not about to relent and 中止する its 独占主義的な 行為. It will go 今後 with .逮捕する, with パスポート, and with other such 成果／努力s. Without too much imagination, the 影響 of such moves might very 井戸／弁護士席 be the 設立 of a world in which we must 支払う／賃金 a （死傷者）数 coming and going for the 特権 of using what was once 解放する／自由な for all.
For instance, the Internet is so easily and cheaply accessible (for U.S. 居住（者）s, anyway) and the 場所／位置 of amazing 革新 because it is predicated on open 議定書s and upon the fact that just about anyone can 接近 most pages for 解放する／自由な. No one proprietary とじ込み／提出する 判型 支配するs, 軍隊ing a 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金 on 見解（をとる）ing Web pages. But if a monopoly 力／強力にする were to 支配（する）／統制する not just とじ込み／提出する 判型s but also 使用者 profiles, the Internet, as a 解放する／自由な space, 利用できる to all, might very 井戸／弁護士席 中止する to 存在する.
