This program was 初めは called ADVENT, undoubtedly in homage to the forerunner of all games of this type, the seminal ADVENT (a.k.a. Colossal 洞穴) written by Will Crowther for the PDP-10 in the 中央の-1970s. This 見解/翻訳/版 was later retitled "ADVENT1" after I wrote a second one.

Lines in BBC BASIC were numbered, so that they could be 言及/関連d by GOTOs. 公式文書,認める the forethought inherent in numbering lines at intervals of 10 so that, as here, you can 挿入する extra code without renumbering lines. In this 事例/患者, it turned out that more initialisation was necessary - I forgot that the program needed to explain what it was and what you had to do.

The BBC 命令(する) line had a feature called AUTO; it could 誘発する you with line numbers in intervals of 10 as you entered your program. This is an excellent example of coding 環境 support for good programming practice.

The first puzzle is somewhat of an 平易な one. We can see, though, that the 欠如(する) of commenting is raising some 問題/発行するs in understanding my 動機づけ for 令状ing particular code. Why W for "light the candle"? And what was the 初めの value?

Also, the "always 圧力(をかける) Q to やめる" 指示/教授/教育 is only valid for the first few 決定/判定勝ち(する) points. Perhaps, in hindsight, a central 重要な-扱うing 決まりきった仕事 would have served better.

BBC BASIC may 井戸/弁護士席 have supported subroutines, but as a larval hacker I had not yet learnt to use such 複雑にするd 建設するs. The program flow therefore consists 完全に of GOTOs, which give one an unparalleled 量 of freedom in 決定するing and changing code paths. In my 見解(をとる), we've been on a slippery downward slope of encapsulation, data hiding and modularisation ever since 1968.

The 出口 決まりきった仕事. One can already see coding idioms 現れるing - the PRINT / INPUT / IF 建設する is one we'll be seeing again. And again.

The 使用者's first taste of 失敗. Abrupt, 独断的な and often painful death is a recurring 主題 of the game; one 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うs this was partly 予定 to a small child's inherent fascination with 殺人ing things in 汚い ways, and partly because 殺人,大当り the 使用者 off is いっそう少なく 成果/努力 than 令状ing new 場所s, or keeping 跡をつける of 明言する/公表する to 許す them to revisit old areas.

Whew! Dodged that one.
