Good Computer Housekeeping

Things to do before your computer dies
... and how to 始める,決める up the new one, when the day comes, for whatever 推論する/理由

Page URL: hh9bs.htm

(You have 選択s in perusing this page: see my 力/強力にする Browsing advice.)

Ideally, you will see this essay before you first turn on a new computer. But even if it is too late for your 現在の computer, there are things here that I believe will give you a happier 計算するing experience. And you'll know better for another time. There are also things, like the (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) on how I used to do a system image, (aka "disk image"), which may be useful in 孤立/分離.

The (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する of contents should give you a good idea of what is covered in this essay. You don't need to read every section to learn from selected sections.

Some of the 明確な/細部s in this essay, 特に in 尊敬(する)・点 of Windows itself, are 時代遅れの. But I think many of the suggestions, and the 示唆するd sequence for bringing a new machine into use remain 価値のある.

We would all rather "play" with a new toy... but the steps below really are 価値(がある) the time and trouble, and need to be taken before you reward yourself with some play!

Best wishes for a new machine which is faster, more reliable, いっそう少なく 傾向がある to 衝突,墜落, etc, etc than your old one was. All the "stuff" below is a 苦痛. May you have lots of 伸び(る). And enjoy the "honeymoon".

In what follows, I will discuss some of the things I do with a new machine. You will have to adapt my 手続きs to 控訴 your needs and inclinations. I hope the essay has some useful ideas for you.

Yes! Bits are 時代遅れの. And in places my unhappiness with Microsoft is evident. But this was still my "go to" page when I started up a new PC in July 24. And I did tweak the text while doing that.

(米)棚上げする/(英)提議する of contents....

You may want to skip the next few sections...

But please give these sections a try at least...

=== 在庫

In theory, before I even turn a new computer on, I 記録,記録的な/記録する it in my 在庫 system.

Part of the joy of my 在庫 system is that it gives each piece of 器具/備品 a unique short identifier.

For PCs, I also 割り当てる a unique short "nick-指名する". I always start it with a letter, and only use lowercase letters and digits.

The nick-指名する will be something like "PCwin11aug25" (usually shorter!)... in which 事例/患者, I try to make the main admin 使用者 (as know to Windows) win11aug25. And if I can, I 始める,決める things up so that win11aug25's "文書s" is in C:\使用者s\win11aug25.

I don't often manage to 満足させる that last want... but I DO fight hard to keep ONLY "Public" and my 使用者's "文書s" folder (!) in C:\使用者s\. There's a good 推論する/理由 for C:\使用者s\Public\

On a simple, one 使用者 PC, I know of no (good) 推論する/理由 for another folder in C:\使用者s\... but don't go around 削除するing things just because you don't know what they are.

---
Probably a good idea in general but 特に important if you will be using the eSet anti-malware 一括: Even before you 任命する/導入する your anti-malware ソフトウェア, change your computer's "指名する". (I use my 愛称 for the computer, and 含む the 在庫 code in the description field of the computer's 内部の documentation.)

Other than that, I would do as little as possible before having your anti-malware in place!

When you do turn it on, you will find Microsoft waiting, and trying hard to get its claws into you.

As of August 25, Windows 11 プロの/賛成の, you do NOT need to have a Microsoft account, do NOT need to use One 運動. It's a struggle, but you CAN get in. You can even 始める,決める it up to let you in without using a password or "PIN" (Personal 身元確認,身分証明 Number) as Microsoft was calling it not long before July 24, even though you can 含む letters and symbols in your "PIN"... which is a very good idea.

Leaving it possible to start up your PC and go 直接/まっすぐに to 接近ing とじ込み/提出するs without entering some creds is a bad idea.

Onward! Or "支援する to what I was 説"...

You want to do the 改名する before you 任命する/導入する the ソフトウェア because if you do, the license you are using will be 登録(する)d in your web account with them will be 割り当てるd to a 指名する that means something to you.

You may or may not want to change your computer's workgroup 指名する. 公式文書,認める: All of the PCs on the same LAN need to be in the same workgroup if you want them to play nicely together across the LAN.

The dialog for 改名するing your computer is getting hard to find.

In July 24, on a Windows 11 machine, I went into Settings, and tried two searches...

... and got two different results. The second got me into the more useful "old fashioned" 支配(する)/統制する パネル盤 "System 所有物/資産/財産s" dialog.

In Sept 25, on a Windows 11 machine, I used the "change workgroup 指名する" 大勝する.)

(Some time ago, and in Oct 20, Windows 10, I went into settings, searched. Knowing the 権利 dialog used to 株 the "改名する workgroup" 仕事, I went into settings, used its search for "change workgroup 指名する", and gave me a link to open the 権利 dialog... which after the 最近の major update, 3 Feb 20, gave me the old "Systems 所有物/資産/財産s" dialog. By all means fill in "description", too, but that's not what we need for eSet. After you do "description", use the "To 改名する this computer or..." button. (Oct 20, 勝利,勝つ 10, the "new" Settings app 申し込む/申し出d "改名する computer" on the "System- About" page, too.)

Going 支援する to 在庫ing your 器具/備品- Having these IDs is very useful. (If you are 確信して that there's nothing you want to know about why and how to keep 跡をつける of your 器具/備品 在庫, you can skip to the next section.)

Every piece of 器具/備品 I have has a short, unique identifier. This 大いに 補助装置s me in 記録,記録的な/記録する keeping. (In practice, I am human too, and often 落ちる to the 誘惑 to play first, work later... but I always 悔いる 急ぐing ahead with other things, and doing the 記録,記録的な/記録する keeping "later". While I might defer the 記録,記録的な/記録する keeping, I always 現実に do most of other the things 述べるd below before other "play". If something goes wrong before your anti-malware ソフトウェア is in place, you may not be able to do the things you should have done. Your system may have incurred 永久の impairment.)

Something like a mouse was 供給(する)d with the computer typically gets its own ID. My 最新の computer is ICH04a, the mouse that (機の)カム with it is IMS035. Things like thumbdrives, printers, etc, also each get their own ID.

In my 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of IDs 割り当てるd, I 記録,記録的な/記録する things like "IMS035 (機の)カム with ICH04a", and under ICH04a's 入ること/参加(者), there is a cross 言及/関連. Also under ICH04a's 入ること/参加(者) is a 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of the CDs (they are given ID numbers, too), 手動式のs, etc. 供給(する)d with the computer. This may seem extreme, but 信用 me: The day will come when you are glad of a simple way to 解決する "Which is the CD that goes with this piece of 器具/備品?". And 記録,記録的な/記録する the 購入(する) price, date and serial number. If you have to make an 保険 (人命などを)奪う,主張する, having those 詳細(に述べる)s will impress the adjustor, and 鈍らせる his hopes of 否定するing your (人命などを)奪う,主張する.

=== First 力/強力にする Up: Get your 安全 控訴 in place. (And during that...)

Once the 在庫 記録,記録的な/記録するs are made, I 解雇する/砲火/射撃 up the computer, but not connected to my LAN or the internet, at first.

You may be pestered to do Windows 活性化 or Windows Updates... for now, try to avail yourself of a "later" 選択, if one is 現在のd.

Sigh. Remember "the good old days", when we could turn off (a)自動的な/(n)自動拳銃 Windows Updates? At 10/21, Windows 10, at least we can still pause updates for 7 days. (And un-pause them sooner, if we wish.)

I 令状 these things as much for myself as for you. At least someone uses them! 公式文書,認める to self, and others who use eSet's excellent anti-malware (or other ソフトウェア that also does the excellent thing I am about to come to): Be sure to 改名する the computer even before you 任命する/導入する the 安全 控訴. (See above.) The 指名する 割り当てるd to the computer will be 選ぶd up by eSet, and used in the 記録,記録的な/記録するs at their end, so they can be in step with the 指名するs you use for your machines. (eSet can 対処する, if you fail to do this... but the 指名する they use may not be as useful as your 指名する for the machine.)

Besides 改名するing the computer, I am often not happy with the 使用者 指名する that is on the default account.

In October 2021, I said "I don't think I am alone in resenting Microsoft's ever tighter choke 持つ/拘留する." August 25? I now say it even more fervently. Tighter choke 持つ/拘留する, and ever 増加するing 乱用 of that choke 持つ/拘留する. And I am using Linux more and more.

(July 24, a professional did some very 極小の 始める,決める-up for me on a new Win11 プロの/賛成の system. He took care of setting the 使用者, and the a 指名する on the 使用者s root folder as I 手配中の,お尋ね者 it. It can still be done!

At 10/21, with Windows 10, you could still change the 指名する on a 使用者 account, but it wasn't 平易な....

Use 勝利,勝つ 重要な+ R (and enter "支配(する)/統制する"), or the taskbar search box to get into the old 支配(する)/統制する パネル盤. Go to 使用者 Accounts. From there it is やめる 平易な to 改名する the 使用者.

But, say the 初めの 指名する was "Lenovo", and I've made it "XYZ". Now "XYZ" is 現在のd in superficial 状況s, but, internally, that 使用者's folder in C:\使用者s is still "Lenovo"! (This is still the 事例/患者 9/25 with Win11 プロの/賛成の 24H2

There are pages on the web telling you ways to change that. But to me, they all carried 危険s I didn't wish to run. So I put text とじ込み/提出する in C:\使用者s called "UserXyzUsesFolderLenovo.txt".

Even that wasn't 平易な. Windows wouldn't let me create a とじ込み/提出する in that folder. So I created it どこかよそで, and then used copy/paste to put it in C:\使用者s. Bah.

I think I am on the 追跡する of a proper 解答 to this 事柄. Watch this space! (There are some "on your 長,率いる be it" 公式文書,認めるs in the comments embedded here. Use 見解(をとる) Source, if you are feeling 無謀な/ ambitious/ curious.)

Moving on...

If a new machine comes with a 解放する/自由な 裁判,公判 of some internet 安全 控訴, before you 受託する the 申し込む/申し出 of the 裁判,公判, ask yourself "Is this the 製品 I want to use on this machine forever?" ("安全 控訴": Anti-ウイルス, etc ソフトウェア.) I think it is a 誤った economy to start off with one 安全 控訴 if you ーするつもりである to switch to another later.

Either by 活動させる/戦時編成するing a 裁判,公判, or, in the olden days, by 任命する/導入するing from a CD or thumbdrive, getting the 安全 控訴 up and running as soon as possible is a 最高の,を越す 優先. These days, the 平易な 大勝する is to go online "naked" 簡潔に. You will have to go online 結局, but depending upon how hard you want to struggle, you can put that off for a bit. (In "the good old days", I preferred to 任命する/導入する from a CD or thumbdrive because it was usually faster and easier. It also 避けるd having to go online before at least some 保護 is in place. 10/21: I've been doing online 任命する/導入するs for some time. The 代案/選択肢 is just too much hassle.)

So you probably need to connect your new PC to the internet before you have your anti-malware in place. Sigh.

Anti-malware ソフトウェア 管理/経営 will never be "平易な"... but I've 設立する that eSet 控訴s me really 井戸/弁護士席... not least because it IS 平易な to "migrate" a license from an old machine to a new one.

When you connect the PC to your LAN, you will probably be asked "Do you want to 許す your PC to be discoverable?" This is another place where I'd like to say "no", but that leads to a lot of hassles if you want to 株 things... e.g. とじ込み/提出するs and printers... across you LAN. (公式文書,認める to self: 5 Jan 21, pcW2021, I said "okay".(And Oct 20, pcMillie. 9/25, PCva25aug... didn't arise. Left 株ing for later.)) (See "All is 明らかにする/漏らすd", below, for more on the "discoverable" 問題/発行する.)

When you have your anti-malware in place, check for updates... Of the anti-malware 控訴, and of Windows itself. Several times, if necessary, until you get "no updates 利用できる" when you check.

Then do a 包括的な ざっと目を通す of the whole computer. (eSet 乗る,着手するs on one for you, as soon as it can.) (Anti-malware ソフトウェア is best thought of as a "bouncer" on the door of a nightclub. He/she checks stuff as it arrives, but once it is inside, the anti-malware ソフトウェア has a slimmer chance of (悪事,秘密などを)発見するing bad 行為.

STOP PRESS... ALL IS REVEALED IN...

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/とじ込み/提出する-株ing-over-a-網状組織-in-windows-10-b58704b2-f53a-4b82-7bc1-80f9994725bf

基本的に- Microsoft screwed things up for us again a while ago. I've used 株ing folders across the LAN for a multitude of things since at least the 早期に 90s. "Thanks" Microsoft.

I had a lot of 構成要素 here. It will need to be re-written. At least other parts of the page are still good... for now. Until the next (no choice) Windows update. 井戸/弁護士席, there is a choice: Linux. When I find a Linux Shortkeys and Textpad... I'M OUTTA HE'A! (I had to abandon Pegasus even on Windows. I now use Thunderbird... which is also 利用できる for Linux. For my wants it isn't as good as Pegasus was but it will do, not least because 移住 to Linux should be 平易な! (^_^)

Bitlocker

Mirosoft thinks the data on your hard 運動 should be encrypted. There are good 推論する/理由s for this. And it has a downside.

The 解答 Microsoft switches on by default is called "BitLocker". This is an 問題/発行する that only a geek could love. Me? I don't want my hard 運動 encrypted. (If locked, you are locked out if you try to 回復する from a system 衝突,墜落 by moving the hard 運動 to a different computer. If NOT locked, and you 配置する/処分する/したい気持ちにさせる of your computer, securely 除去する your data from the hard 運動 first. Just 削除するing it isn't enpough.)

Happily, (勝利,勝つ 11 プロの/賛成の, 24H2, (va25aug), 30 Sep 25) You only need to search "Settings" for Bitlocker, and a 支配(する)/統制する dialog should open telling you if Bitlocker is on or off, and giving you the means to turn it off if it is on.

If you choose to do that, it would be 同様に to の近くに other progams first. The 過程 will probably take some time. All of the とじ込み/提出するs on your disk, encrypted at the moment, will be resaved in a decrypted form. Choose carefully the time you start. Have the computer plugged in... don't rely on a laptop's 殴打/砲列 to last long enough to finish the 職業. And it it dies 中央の-職業, it might not be pretty.

Is Bitlocker active on your machine? 権利-click the Windows icon. (Or two-finger-tap on a touchpad. Yes, I know "everyone" knows this. I 人物/姿/数字d it out... without using Leo!... 30 Sep 25) Start PowerShell (or 終点) (Admin), run manage-bde -status

You should get a 報告(する)/憶測 for each 大(公)使館員d 貯蔵 装置.

=== Windows Updates... groan.

Before we start on the topic of Windows updates: a small 事柄. If you 港/避難所't done it already, it is 安全な to do the Windows 活性化 at the next chance you get. (If you get asked to do it. No longer 伴う/関わるs a dialog at 1/21, as I 解任する. Didn't arise 9/25, 勝利,勝つ 11... but a friend had done some 予選 work for me.)

At July 24, this section is やめる 時代遅れの in some ways. A computer's owner has いっそう少なく choice now about what he/ she will update, when. 底(に届く) line: I think doing them is necessary, and try to fight it いっそう少なく than I once did.

===

Now would be a good time to see if your PC needs any Windows updates. (So far you may only have done the 安全 控訴 updates.)

If you are really sure that you know all the 必須のs, and don't care about some 無作為の thoughts about Windows Update, you can skip this section.

Doing the Windows updates is やめる like doing the updates for your 安全 控訴. As with that, in the past, anyway, when all seemed 井戸/弁護士席, いつかs when you re-booted your "updated" PC and did one more Windows Update you might find more waiting.

Damned if you do (they いつかs mess the machine up), but probably more likely damned if you don't...

At this 行う/開催する/段階, I would certainly 制限する myself to the 批判的な updates. You can be selective if you use the "custom" 選択.

Don't be fooled, at least at this 行う/開催する/段階, into 選ぶing into Microsoft updates. That tries to update everything Microsoft on your computer, e.g. it 延長するs the update 過程 to Microsoft Office, if you happen to have that 任命する/導入するd. For now, stick to Windows update, and update the other Microsoft 使用/適用s when and as you begin to use them. Maybe someday Microsoft Update will be 権利 for you, but it probably isn't, at this 早期に 行う/開催する/段階.

Again, like the 安全 控訴 updates, you may have to repeat the update 過程 several times to get to the point when no new updates are recommended.

If you decide you don't want one of the updates in the 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of 提案するd updates, you can "hide" it for 未来 Windows Update 開会/開廷/会期s... there will even be a (疑いを)晴らす message to the 影響 that you have hidden some updates, and an 平易な "un-hide" (回復する to suggestions 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)) 選択. To hide a 提案するd update, click on the "+" 調印する in 前線 of it, That should give rise to 詳細(に述べる)s of the 提案するd update. At the 底(に届く) of that, there should be a grayed-out "Don't show this update again" box. Once you untick the update as one to be made, the "Don't show..." box becomes tick-able. I usually use "don't show" for 申し込む/申し出s to 昇格 (not patch) my Internet Explorer and Windows マスコミ Player. I rarely use either, and if when I do I get problems (or if it has been a while) I "un-hide" the updates, do them.

There are "High 優先" updates, which I 一般に do, apart from the things 公式文書,認めるd already. And there are "ソフトウェア, optional" and "金物類/武器類, optional" updates. I tend to be much more relaxed, 保守的な, (reactionary?!) about these. 特に before I've done my first 十分な system/ disk image. Microsoft means 井戸/弁護士席, but if your computer, unbeknownst to you or Microsoft has a bit of わずかに eccentric 金物類/武器類, and you've 任命する/導入するd an "昇格" which leaves your 金物類/武器類 not working, do you want to start into the "joys" of system 回復する? I don't take the chance of having to go there. Okay- traffic on my LAN may travel a little slower. But if it is WORKING....?

(Skip this paragraph if you like!) (It was written a while ago, but the points it make remain valid.) By the way- On the admittedly bought- a- while- ago, brought- into- use- today machine I was going through 初期の 体制/機構 on as I created one 版 of this for you, I had to do four Windows Updates to get to the point where there were no "new" updates for my system. In the first update, as I remember things, I 任命する/導入するd (の中で other things) .NET 1.0. The next update 適用するd a patch to that. The next time I think that I had .NET 1.1 (The updater hadn't 提案するd putting 1.1 on the first time because 1.0 wasn't 現在の). And then the next time (as I remember and 解釈する/通訳する things), the updater said "Oh! You have the basic .NET 1.1 枠組み (which you didn't have before). You need the 安全 patch that (機の)カム out a while after 1.1 first (機の)カム out." All of this just to illustrate for you the fact that you have to do update again and again, as often as you can stand to take the time, to be sure you are fully updated. As I said in regard to 安全 控訴 updating: いつかs you are at "A", the world is at "C", and you have to go to "B" to get ready to go to "C". Sigh.

=== Starting fresh? Migrating?

Are you starting fresh with the computer you are setting up? Or are you moving on from an old computer?

If you are moving on from an old computer, you are likely to have old とじ込み/提出するs which you will need on the new computer.

This can be a problem.

I'm afraid I have no "one size fits all" answer. But do think carefully about how you want to manage your 移行.

Some things will be 平易な. I have a folder called "Text Docs" in my "文書s" folder. I have many sub-folders. One for letters to an 雇用者, one for 草案s for web-pages like this one, one for 公式文書,認めるs taken in the course of my family history 研究, etc.

To a large extent, as far as my "Text docs" folder, starting up the new computer is just a 事例/患者 of copying the old computer's Text Docs folder to the new computer.

But you have to be careful to time it to the moment that you are moving to the new computer for those 職業s. Copy the old folder to the new too soon, and then do some work on the old computer on something... and you can see the problem.

But in the 早期に days on the new computer, you are bound to create some NEW text 文書s. On the new computer.

My answer to that is to 一時的に have a "Text Docs-new" folder on the new computer. Once the old Text Docs have been moved to the new computer, I move the things in "Text Docs-new" to the newly- created- from- old- computer's- TextDocs folder, and 削除する the now empty "Text Docs-new".

This 作品 井戸/弁護士席 for some things.

ソフトウェア for (a)自動的な/(n)自動拳銃 backups. 解放する/自由な from Cobian.

(The "backups" can be used to move folders and とじ込み/提出するs from your old computer to a new computer... besides anyway 存在 a general vitue even better than eating all of your vegetables.)

許す a bit of going 負かす/撃墜する a rabbit 穴を開ける? If you are not at all 利益/興味d in 解放する/自由な ソフトウェア for doing backups, you can jump 負かす/撃墜する past this. (It will take you into the "First 使用/適用s, First Settings" section.)

I like the the excellent, 解放する/自由な Cobian Backup. ("グラファイト/黒鉛" is the 指名する of the 見解/翻訳/版 I know.) It has been my backup 解答 for years.

We'll come 支援する to Backup in a moment, but I should について言及する that it is "the old one". If you are just starting with Cobian, you should probably go for Backup's 後継者, Cobian Reflector. The Cobian website (link above) tells all. Reflector is 解放する/自由な, too. Just like Backup.

I've used Backup with the small 選択 of features that I want on a Windows 11 computer for a bit, for a few months, without surprises.

The Cobian website doesn't say you can't use Backup on Windows 11... but then again, it doesn't say that you can.

While I can, I'll stick with the devil I know. But it's possible I am 存在 foolish. Reflector is said to have all of Backup's 能力s.

If you are 利益/興味d in Reflector, you might want to visit PureInfoTech's careful discussion of setting up Cobian Reflector on Windows 11. Skimming it might even be useful if you are "only" 任命する/導入するing Backup. (It may help you understand the choices you have with these very granular and 柔軟な programs.)

Because there are many different ways to use them, you might not want to follow all of his settings advice in the page 特記する/引用するd above.

The 残り/休憩(する) of this is all about Backup.

---
Backup 作品 井戸/弁護士席 to copy 広大な 列s of my hard 運動s to 外部の 運動s for backup or 貯蔵. My copies are not encrypted or oddly formatted... they are JUST copies. (It is possible to "turn on" either, if you want them... but if you do, will using the backup copy be as 平易な?)

Copying 広大な 列s takes time. Backup automatically also makes more たびたび(訪れる) backups of some folders where I'm making たびたび(訪れる) changes to things that are important to me.

What Cobian Backup does for me

You can jump 負かす/撃墜する past this. (It will take you into the "First 使用/適用s, First Settings" section.)

I have an 外部の hard 運動 connected to my PC by USB. It is there most of the time, but I do take it off from time to time without any hassles.

I have Cobian running as a service.

I don't have to do anything other than having the hard 運動 大(公)使館員d to get backups of 確かな high value folders, and groups of folders, on a schedule. Several schedules, 現実に...

One schedule does a backup of the folders with my 地元の copies of my webpages on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2am. Another 支援するs up my work on my 税金 returns every night at 4am.

These are just two examples. I can turn each on or off as needed. (The one for the 税金 work isn't turned on outside of the 税金 season.)

I also have a "仕事" (Cobian 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語) for copying ALL of my "文書s" folder to the hard 運動. This 仕事 isn't on a schedule... it happens when I invoke it. (Which is a simple 過程.)

Each of these can be a 十分な backup every time, or incremental backups 普通は, but a 十分な backup after every x incrementals... with "x" whatever value you want.

Where each backup goes is 完全に up to the 使用者. It is one of the parameters you 始める,決める when designing the 仕事.

I've never encrypted or compressed the backups... but Cobian 申し込む/申し出s to do either or both.

圧倒するd? Don't be! 任命する/導入する it, start slowly, and build things up.

It may not be designed for idiots, but if you put in the work, it is a powerful 道具.

One 制限: A few programs need to be shut 負かす/撃墜する before you can create a good backup, if you are looking for something to help you 再構築する your life if your hard disk dies.

Thunderbird is the only program I use that 落ちるs in that 部類, thankfully. I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う I could 追加する "shut 負かす/撃墜する Thunderbird and wait 4 seconds before starting the backup" to my Cobian Backup 仕事 for 支援 up all of the とじ込み/提出するs in my 文書s folder (invoked by 手渡す, when I feel the need, remember), or my 仕事 that 支援するs up just my Thunderbird profile. Backup is that powerful. Maybe when I finish this essay for you, I'll have a moment to look for that feature!

=== First 使用/適用s, First Settings

Cobian Backup or Reflector: See above- that is a "first 使用/適用" you may want.

I next 任命する/導入する Firefox. It has always (for me) been a quick and 平易な 任命する/導入する. I think it is more 安全な・保証する than the Microsoft 代案/選択肢, and it is the browser I like. (I also use the 勇敢に立ち向かう browser, and I use search.勇敢に立ち向かう.com as the default search engine on both browsers.) There's a lot of web work ahead; you might 同様に do it with the best browser... whichever one you みなす that to be! (There's a way in the Firefox settings to 追加する search engines, and make 勇敢に立ち向かう the default engine.) 勇敢に立ち向かう's AI summarizer gives me excellent results, but you get the 伝統的な links to pages 同様に... if you need them after the 要約. I rarely do.

===

So far so good. If you are unlucky, and the 供給者 of your PC has taken money from さまざまな people to 押し進める 広告s at you, you may have 遭遇(する)d any number of "try this!", "try that!" pop-ups already.

I use the "later" 選択 as often as possible. I tend at this 行う/開催する/段階 to 避ける 完全に 削除するing anything... that will come later, if my 早期に inclinations seem sound after I have slept on them. I don't like the fact that extra things have been 任命する/導入するd on my computer, but I want to get to know it a bit more before 削除するing anything. While I will often move things out from "in 前線 of my 直面する", I am 一般に 気が進まない to fully 削除する things. They may have been put on your machine for a good, or even 批判的な, 推論する/理由.

===

The machine will probably not be 始める,決める up as you want it. For the moment, resist doing the little tweaks that we all know and love. I might for the moment pause the (a)自動的な/(n)自動拳銃 Windows updates. (But I wouldn't leave them off for long.

Once upon a time, at this point, I 支持するd doing a 十分な image of your disk(s) / system's ソフトウェア. If you have this, when your computer fails, you will be in a much better place than you will be without it. 公式文書,認める I said "when...", not "if your computer fails. But of course, today, that's not a trivial 演習, given the bloat we've seen in ソフトウェア. I 自白する I do it いっそう少なく and いっそう少なく. Not a good idea, but I want A LIFE! "回復する points" are 価値(がある) considering, too. (The 勇敢に立ち向かう AI gave me a very nice guide in 返答 to a search on "回復する point windows 11" 19 Sep 25.) See also this article from Microsoft discussing the System 回復する 施設.

My advice, "Do an image" has a history that amuses me: It was in the page long ago. Then it was downgraded, prefaced "Left in, to raise a chuckle from those who remember the days:". In 10/21, I 復帰させるing the advice, because affordable hard disks with 抱擁する capacities, and high 移転 速度(を上げる)s, have become 利用できる... and, as you just read, 7/24, I'm 支援 away again.

While it is tedious, it used not to be the end of the world if your hard disk failed, which is a 比較して ありふれた 原因(となる) of computers dying. If you've made the 十分な disk image, you take that and your computer to your 地元の computer shop, they copy your image to a new hard 運動 (not hard), fit that into your computer (not hard), and you're 支援する to where ever you were when you did the 十分な disk image. I would keep this "first disk image" someplace 安全な, to make it easier to get 支援する to where you started. If you 再構築する a machine from the first image, you will of course have to reload the 文書s and data that arose later.... you do keep backups, don't you?... but the 過程 of getting 支援する to a "new" machine is much, much harder if the image hasn't been done by the owner. (The 過程 of a 再構築する is explained more fully later.)

If you are a bit timid, or uncertain of your 技術s, now is not too soon to do this 十分な image. I must 収容する/認める, I used to do a few more basic "getting started" things before I did my first 十分な disk image, so I will について言及する some of those 早期に tidies here, and then go into the 詳細(に述べる)s of creating the 十分な disk image.

=== Windows "回復 Disk"- Old Skool

In the "olden days" (at 10/21) Some machines 許す you to 燃やす a "Windows 回復 disk". Maybe that's still possible? (Maybe consider looking for that 選択?) But I think "making an image" is better. (I will try to explain that in a moment.) いつかs, you even got a 回復 disk with a new machine! Whether you make your own, or have one 供給(する)d by the computer distributor, don't put too much 約束 in it... I've too often seen discrepancies between what was on the machine and the 明言する/公表する the "回復 disk" created. There are good 推論する/理由s for this. Even if the 供給者 is trying hard to give you a good 回復 disk, the 仕事 is formidable. And don't imagine that any 回復 disk is going to put things 支援する the way you had them. A good one... if you 港/避難所't misplaced it before you need it... will only put the PC 支援する to the 明言する/公表する it was in when you took the PC out of the box.

If you are going to take my advice and make a disk image or two, then maybe the 回復 disk isn't as 批判的な as it was.

(Return to (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する of Contents)

=== 回復 Partition

Some machines have a "回復 disk" on a hidden partition of the hard 運動. Using this to "回復する" a system may save the day for you after a serious ウイルス infestation or 類似の, but in 新規加入 to the caveats above about 回復 disks, be aware of the extra 複雑化s that a 回復 partition entail. And be 気が進まない to 攻撃する,衝突する the "回復する my system" panic button for the same 推論する/理由s that I hope will make you 気が進まない to use a 回復 disk.

公式文書,認める that the word "回復する" has many uses in the world of computers. In this section I am not, for instance, talking about the system built into Windows for rolling your system 支援する to a previous "回復する point". (While we're 簡潔に on that 支配する, though, if you've heard of it and wonder how to create "回復する points", let me explain: Under XP (and others) if you click "Start"/"Help and Support", one of your choices will be "Undo changes... with System 回復する". You can click on that without undoing changes or doing anything else! Once you have clicked on it, one of your choices is "Create a 回復する Point". I guess if we are willing to click "Start" when we want to stop the computer, we should be able to manage the above. So... 支援する to one of the OTHER "回復する"s....

In either 事例/患者, remember that the type of 回復する we were talking about before my one paragraph digression, if it 作品 will wipe all of your data, and 使用/適用s you 任命する/導入するd. It will (try to) put your PC 支援する to how it (機の)カム from the 蓄える/店. And not every 回復する disk will do even that. You are depending on the 製造業者 keeping the 回復する disks they send out up to date, keeping them 一貫した with what the 製造業者 is sending out on the day your PC was shipped. This is an almost impossible 仕事 for the 製造業者s, and I have seen 顧客s of "big 指名する" 製造業者s 不正に disappointed when trying to use 回復する disks. In any 事例/患者... the 回復する disk won't have some of the Windows updates which you will have on your disk image if you follow the advice above,

One last point regarding 回復する partitions: If your computer dies, it will probably be 負かす/撃墜する to...

If it is a dead disk, how can you use the 回復する partition? The only thing that the 回復する partition may 直す/買収する,八百長をする for you is a computer that has been 攻撃する,衝突する by a 汚い bit of malware, or 攻撃する,衝突する by 操作者 error. If you are ignorant enough to 削除する 批判的な system とじ込み/提出するs, are you knowledgeable enough to 首尾よく 遂行する/発効させる a 回復する from the hidden part イオン?

Having said all of those 消極的な things, I should 追加する that 支援する in Windows 98 days, when CD copies of the OS were routinely 供給(する)d with new systems, the "修理 任命する/導入する" 選択 worked 井戸/弁護士席 for me a number of times. If you have the OS disk, and things have gone south, the "修理 任命する/導入する" 選択 (whatever it is called) may do Good Things without creating havoc along the way.

=== Create a System Image (aka Disk Image)

Sigh. Could Microsoft let us keep tried and 実験(する)d 道具s we can rely on?

I'm happy to tell you that at least at 2 Nov 21 there is one such 道具 which they 港/避難所't 取って代わるd with an "改善するd" answer, at least in Windows 10, for as long as they 許す us to use that.

その上に, should the native 道具s disappear, I'd look into what Paragon were 現在/一般に 申し込む/申し出ing. I used many of their backup/ 回復する/ etc 道具s over the years, and they were good. In March 2012 I 任命する/導入するd their 解放する/自由な (for personal use) Backup and 回復, which was a splendid 道具, 申し込む/申し出ing the disk imaging I want, AND さまざまな backup 道具s, which can be used in simple 方式s, or more subtly.

I try to do my first 運動 image やめる 早期に on... before I mess anything up!... and while the machine still doesn't have "much" on it. (An XP machine I recently 始める,決める up has "only" about 71,000 とじ込み/提出するs. I have put a few 使用/適用s on it, but most (probably at least 95%) of those are the "核心", "必須の" とじ込み/提出するs of Windows... and we wonder why it is 安定性のない. Bah.

--------
When I 乗る,着手するd on the に引き続いて approach to 支援 up my system in October 21, it was the first time I'd used this 正確な approach.

Be advised: The excellent guide at www.windowscentral.com/how-make-十分な-backup-windows-10 said "The System Image Backup 道具 for Windows 10 is no longer a 持続するd feature, but you can still use it for the foreseeable 未来. The 指示/教授/教育s 輪郭(を描く)d in this guide are meant to create a 一時的な 十分な backup while the feature is still 利用できる."

This 過程 will "逮捕(する)" everything. That's both good and bad!

Do it on a very new system, and put this "早期に 明言する/公表する" image someplace 安全な "forever". As you 追加する apps, 文書s and data, the size of the image will grow. An image 持つ/拘留するs "everything" remember.

Now... I said this was my first time. I've certainly used system images before now! This is 簡単に my first time of making one with the OS's native 道具.

My thanks to the UK magazine "Computer Active for one of their small パネル盤s reminding me of this 選択, and encouraging me with the idea that, compared to the 利益s and the 職業 done, the chore really isn't so very onerous. It was that which 誘発するd me to go looking and find the more 詳細(に述べる)d Windows Central guide.

You may want to do more 十分な images later, with your 蓄積するd 文書s, etc... but the day may come when you want to get 支援する to your machine "as it started out". If you've kept the image, you'll be able to do that! (I'll talk about 再構築するing a system from an image later.)

The bad news

After spending about two hours on this, I've managed to create the system image. That went 井戸/弁護士席. I think. Not "実験(する)d"... but I'm 公正に/かなり 確信して that I have a good system image.

What I hadn't realized as soon as I would have wished is that I need not only the image, but also a "a bootable USB flash 運動".

It's not a 取引,協定 breaker. But it is extra work that I can't 直面する just now.

As I understand things, the Bootable Flash 運動 can be used to start a system with an empty hard disk. I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う it would also work on a system with a corrupted hard disk.

You start the system from the Bootable Flash 運動, and THEN you can use your system image to fill your hard 運動 with what was on it when you made the image.

Fair enough, I guess. I わびる for not doing everything to explain how you get that Bootable Flash 運動 at this time... but I CAN tell you that www.windowscentral.com/how-make-十分な-backup-windows-10 seems to give a very (疑いを)晴らす, very believable 始める,決める of 指示/教授/教育s for what is needed. Sorry.

Returning to "how to make a system image"...

You're going to need someplace to PUT the image. I would 示唆する a large 外部の USB hard 運動.

My "guide", here, is shamelessly 解除するd from the one at the 場所/位置 について言及するd. You might want to use that と一緒に this.

Turn your PC on. Do a Windows Update... you might 同様に have an "up-to-date" system before you take the image!

Then...

Don't be freaked out! From the "Backup" page, you want "Looking for older backup?"... even though you are looking to make a backup, not find one!

And the next thing that might 原因(となる) worry: Now...

Click on "Go to Backup and 回復する (Windows 7)".

Yes! We are going to use an OLD 道具! "Old" because it has stood the 実験(する) of time!

Connect the USB hard 運動, if you 港/避難所't done so already. I used an empty one. I'll try to remember to talk about whether that was necessary in a moment. For a machine with an October 2021 Windows 10 on it, and just a few "main apps" (eSet Internet 安全, Firefox and Libre Office), the backup 道具 said I might need 40 gig of space. A FAST disk, over a 急速な/放蕩な interface will be helpful, too. Go on... buy a new 運動 for this! On the one 手渡す, it is a "waste", as you hope you never need the backup. But on the other 手渡す, if you DO need it, you will really, really want the 過程 to go without any hiccup.

Click on "Create a system image", and then elect "on a hard 運動", and, if several are in the 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) that arises, choose the one you want to use.

I hope you are finding it all very sensible and intuitive? Seemed that way to me, but the guide was useful to "steer" my path. I might not, for instance, have gone 負かす/撃墜する the "Looking for older backup?" without help.

After you click "Next", you may be surprised to find that the 道具 is 提案するing to 支援する up more than just "Windows (C:) (System)" Some PCs are 供給(する)d with "回復" or "System" (or other) partitions. if in 疑問, 含む each of the "運動s" in the 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる). (A 選び出す/独身 hard disk can 持つ/拘留する several "運動s" in the sense the word is 存在 used here.)

Click "Next", click "Start backup"... and then go away and mow the lawn. It WILL take time. Lots of time. Many tens of minutes, even for a system with "just the basics on it", one like the one I 述べるd as the one I was 支援 up.

"Do you want to create a System 修理 disk?"... you should say No!!! This is because the "修理 disk" would be a DVD... and, or course, (to 引用する the guide) "...most 装置s no longer 含む an 光学の 運動, you can skip [creating the 修理 disk]."

??? So how then, will we 回復する the machine, if the need arises? We will use a USB 取り付け・設備 マスコミ to 接近 the 回復 環境. (詳細(に述べる)s to come.)

After you say "No, don't create a 修理 disk", you should be looking at a message 説 "The backup 完全にするd 首尾よく".

Don't worry! You'll have what you need... on the hard 運動 you sent the image to.

You can click the "の近くに" button, to get rid of the message. And you can の近くに the さまざまな windows left open from getting to the Backup 道具.

Have a look at what's on the hard 運動.

If your experience goes as 地雷 did, in the root of the hard 運動, there will be a folder called "WindowsImageBackup". The 指名する 割り当てるd (see above!) to the computer I was 支援 up was pcMsMoss, and that was used as the 指名する for a folder inside "WindowsImageBackup".

Don't mess with stuff in "WindowsImageBackup". Leave it alone. It is for Windows to "play with", and it must not be 乱すd. That's why, I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う, that when we try even to look inside the folder, Windows says we have to say we really, really want to. It's okay to look. Just don't touch.

Do you have to use a separate hard 運動 for each system image? No! (Whew). And as long as you stay out of the WindowsImageBackup folder, you can put other things on the 運動.

But I'd save it for important backups. I'd 避ける using it very often.

And so, disconnect the hard 運動, put it someplace 安全な. Perhaps at your neighbor's house? Let's hope you never have a 解雇する/砲火/射撃... but...

As always, use "安全に 除去する" to 除去する the USB hard 運動.

So! We have a backup! And if we need to use it???...

I'm sorry... I ran out of time, energy at this point. Remember at the 最高の,を越す of this section, I spoke about the Bootable Flash 運動? And gave you a link to 指示/教授/教育s for creating one?

I will try to get 支援する to this one day, give you what is needed. Sorry. For now... onward!

=== とじ込み/提出する system folders. (And Sort Order.)

Where do you save things on your hard disk? Intelligent use of folders is 絶対 必須の to a happy and 生産力のある 関係 with your computer.

If you ask ten 使用者s how とじ込み/提出するs should be 組織するd, you will get ten answers. Fair enough.

But have a system, have a 計画(する).

When it comes to 任命する/導入するing big things, it doesn't 支払う/賃金 to "fight" with Windows and with the creators of, say, Firefox. Or Libre Office. Etc, etc.

But try to keep your 文書s separate.

I try, as much as I can, when it comes to my 文書s. to keep them all "under" "文書s". It makes doing backups easier.

I use "0a", "aa", and "z" very sparingly to put a few folders at the 最高の,を越す or 底(に届く) of alphabetical 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)s of the folders at any level. For example, my "Text" folder is one I go to often, so it is 指名するd "aaText". And I rarely visit "Static", so it is "zStatic". (zStatic is where I put things that rarely change, for instance the "任命する/導入する" とじ込み/提出するs for things I have put on my machine. This lets me skip たびたび(訪れる) 支援 ups of that folder... which is 特に 有益な, as the とじ込み/提出するs there tend to be large.)

It is also helpful to use... extensively... folders within folders.

Apart from the "文書s" folder, I tend to 避ける the weird "system" folders, like "Downloads" and "Pictures" as far as I can.

Sort Order

In "the good old days", Windows didn't try to be "clever". It sorted things, for instance, the 指名するs of とじ込み/提出するs, as 陳列する,発揮するd by the とじ込み/提出する Explorer, in a simple, 論理(学)の, geek friendly manner. If you have noticed anything 半端物 about how Windows sorts things, have a read of my page https://wywtk.com/hh/hh9sort-order.htm for more 詳細(に述べる)s... and a cure!

I must 自白する that by 7/24, I've mostly given up the 戦う/戦い on this 前線, and let Microsoft sort things how it likes, and when I can't find something in the "権利" place alphabetically, I look where I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う Microsoft put it.

The problem only arises when you have letters and digits in the part of the 指名する that you are sorting on.

Zip 古記録 管理/経営: A while before 9/25, 7-zip was recommended by a source I like. (I make do with the zipping build into the Windows とじ込み/提出する Explorer... but maybe you'd like...) The advantage of 7-Zip is that you can (when you wish) create .zip とじ込み/提出するs with a password to lock them from unauthorized 注目する,もくろむs. Use for sending 極度の慎重さを要する things by email. But I had a little trouble with using it... it seemed to "manage" the zips created a bit too comprehensively for my liking. I didn't fight with it... I probably just made a mistake.)

平易な, 解放する/自由な, OCR: Another little app I love, but which not everyone will feel a need for is Capture2Text from it's SourceForge page.

It doesn't "任命する/導入する" the way most programs do today. The download gives you a .zip とじ込み/提出する. Unzip it to a 一時的な folder. You should find a folder called "Capture2Text" is the 製品 of the unzipping.

Put that where you wish. I put 地雷 in my 文書s folder, in a sub-folder called Prgms, in a sub-sub-folder called "3rd party freeware". (I 令状 ソフトウェア, hence the "3rd party" part.)

Go into that. Create a shortcut to it. Move the shortcut to where you want... I've been a slob, and put that on my desktop. (Which I 一般に use more elegantly!) It's "任命する/導入するd"!

Now 開始する,打ち上げる it by 二塁打-clicking the shortcut. It will seem that nothing has happened! But open up your system tray (aka "notification area"), and you should see a red icon with "CAP / 2 / TXT". 権利-click. Settings.

On the "Hotkeys" tab change the first tick, "Start OCR 逮捕(する)", putting it to the left of "Alt". And leave the 重要な as "Q". Make all the other hotkey 可能性s "unmapped" with the pull-負かす/撃墜するs... for now. (By all means play with them later, if you are so inclined, but I'll get you going. What I will explain is all I've ever needed.)

Make sure OCR-1 明示するs "English". I left all the 残り/休憩(する) as I 設立する them 9/25, when doing this AGAIN, while setting up a new machine.

Oh dear... you've led me astray. I 港/避難所't played with it yet, but 明らかに it can be used to say "Please translate this..."

Oh! Oh! AND it can do OCR to 音声部の! The 実験(する) phrase says there's no need to panic, but I do wonder いつかs. (I don't use these 前進するd features. Read on...)

Apart from the tweaks to the default Hotkeys and checking the OCR-1 language, I had nothing to do to my Cap2Text ver 4.6.3 取り付け・設備 20 Sep 25 on a 勝利,勝つ 11 プロの/賛成の machine.)

Yes! But what does it DO?

Once you've done the "once and for all" (for each boot of the OS) 二塁打 click on the shortcut, you should find that if you....

A small box should pop up with the results. They will already be in your clipboard. You can stop the box popping up with an 入ること/参加(者) in the settings, if you don't want that.

It 作品 on almost any text on the 審査する, be it in an image, or on a webpage that doesn't "play nicely" with select/copy/paste, usually 変えるd remarkably 正確に.

Once you start using Cap2Text, I think you'll wonder how you managed without it!

I leave 任命する/導入するing my email ソフトウェア (I don't use web-browser-based email) until later because it is not a small 使用/適用.

I get rid of unwanted (most of them!) desktop shortcuts.

I 始める,決める up my Quick 開始する,打ち上げる 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業.

I used to configure my menus, 支援する in the days when you could... and didn't have the discouraging knowledge that just about when you have things how you want them, Microsoft will 軍隊 an "update" 負かす/撃墜する your throat and blow things out of the water... again.

(Return to (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する of Contents)

=== とじ込み/提出する 株ing

にもかかわらず 存在 what some people call paranoid about "安全", for many years, each of my computers have had a folder which the other computers on my LAN can read from... but not 令状 to.

Here my 安全 関心 is in 尊敬(する)・点 of 制限するing 接近 to my computers, to the とじ込み/提出するs on them. Never forget that 保護するing yourself from the loss of your 文書s and data 予定 to 器具/備品 失敗... or 窃盗, or 解雇する/砲火/射撃... is another important 支店 of "安全".

Do I worry too much about 安全? Remember: Just because someone is paranoid doesn't mean they are wrong! (^_^)

The 株d folder is tremendously useful for passing 文書s or data from machine to machine. (If you don't have 株d folders, don't forget you can email yourself, and send them as attachments. Or just use a "good old" USB memory stick. Was there life before memory sticks?

Is setting it up a bit tedious? Only if you have an 半端物 system (which happens). But it is very useful, once you have it. Do you really want to go on moving thumbdrive between your two PCs?

Where we are going for a LAN 株d folder

Once it has been 始める,決める up, there will be a folder on your new machine which, on the new machine, you can use as you use other folders. You'll be able to save things, move things to or from the folder, 改名する things, etc!

But the folder's 目的 will be to give you a place you can put copies of things you want also to have on another computer on your LAN. I'd 示唆する you use this folder ONLY for such things, and that you 削除する the copy-for-the-other-pc as soon as it has been copied の上に a "home" on the other machine.

The folder will have been 指定するd "a 株". And the 株 will have a 指名する. Let's say that the 株 指名する is "NetShareOnPcCristina".

If all goes 井戸/弁護士席, setting up such a folder isn't very difficult. We'll call the machine it is on "The Sharer",. We'll call the machine on the LAN needing a copy of とじ込み/提出するs 経由で this means "The 探検者". You will いつかs need to enter a 使用者 指名する and password when you 接近 the folder on The Sharer from The 探検者.

The folder, from The 探検者's point of 見解(をとる) will be read-only.

More than one PC on the LAN can be a 探検者.

If The Sharer PC's 指名する is "pcCristina", then the first step for someone using The 探検者 is to open とじ込み/提出する Explorer.

Then they click somewhere at the 権利 end of the 演説(する)/住所 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業. This selects whatever is in it so far. And then they type "\\pccristina\NetShareOnPcCristina", and 圧力(をかける) enter. 公式文書,認める: At this juncture, I'm pretty sure that 事例/患者 is not important. The 使用者 could type "\\PCCRISTINA\NETshareonpccristina", or other variants.

Catch-22: If, on The 探検者, you try to go to just "\\pcCristina", you'd get 接近 to the 株d folder... but not it's contents! Very 混乱させるing! Sigh.

Happily, とじ込み/提出する Explorer remembers previous 入ること/参加(者)s in the 演説(する)/住所 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業, so when you've typed "\\pcC" the 残り/休憩(する) will become easily 利用できる.

A "網状組織 接近" dialog may open. This needs the 使用者 指名する and password for the 使用者 on the Sharer for the owner of the 株d folder that the person on the 探検者 wants to 接近. These will 普通は be the creds used to スピードを出す/記録につける の上に The 探検者, but see "Major Weirdness" below.

The 使用者 指名する and passwords are both 事例/患者 極度の慎重さを要する I believe.

=========
That's what we're going to cover setting up. That it can be done is the good news. I have several machines 始める,決める up with folders like that!

But, today, 28 Sep 25, as I try to do it on a new machine, and tidy up this essay, it is 存在 remarkably recalcitrant. I will have to come 支援する to this later for you.

Beware! It is やめる 平易な to 株 a folder. But いつかs when you do, you in advertently put EVERYTHING up "株d". Not clever, probably!

Whether you want a 株d folder or not, I would recommend at least changing your "workgroup 指名する", if your machine will be on a LAN. This is not something to be done casually... all of the machines on a given LAN have to be using the same workgroup 指名する, if they are to play together nicely.

Under Windows 10, the に引き続いて worked. The 過程 was not too different for Windows 11 プロの/賛成の, 9/25.

To change the workgroup 指名する...

The box for entering a new workgroup 指名する is on the "Change computer 指名する" dialog, which the above should have opened for you.

Things work best when all of the computers on a LAN are 始める,決める to be members of the same workgroup. I do workgroup 指名するs all in upper 事例/患者 letters, as you can only enter upper 事例/患者 in some workgroup edit boxes.

再開する your computer after changing the workgroup 指名する.

Any yes, I am probably trying to 避ける the 問題/発行するs of setting up a 株d folder.

Let's define two 条件:

I will call the computer with とじ込み/提出するs to be read by a different computer on the LAN "the Sharer".

I will call the computer wanting to read とじ込み/提出するs on the Sharer "the 探検者".

First point: I think there may be good 推論する/理由s the Windows makes it hard to do things with a folder in the root of your main hard 運動.

Think about it: If there's a way to read things in, say, C:\MySharedFiles, aren't things awfully の近くに to a 状況/情勢 where someone might get 接近 to other とじ込み/提出するs in the root of C:?

Whether there's a danger or not, I'm going to 始める,決める up an un株d folder in the root of C on The Sharer, and the 株d folder as a sub-folder of that. 株d as Read Only. (The folder will (of course?) be Read/令状 for the 使用者 on The Sharer. Call the folders what you wish. On the computer I call "HarryPotter", I'm going to use...

Don't 急ぐ off to create those yet.

A trick: Create them in 文書s. Then move the parent folder to the root of your C 運動, and that will move the sub-folder 同様に. Create a small text とじ込み/提出する in SharedFromPcHarryPotter.

If you can do that, why can't you just create them in C:? I don't know. Maybe you can. But, 9/25, I have unhappy memories of trying to do that.

Hurrah! So far so good!

But we can't see SharedFromPcHarryPotter and it's contents (非,不,無 yet) from other PCs on the LAN yet.

(This would be a good moment to pin that to your Quick 接近 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる). (権利-click on とじ込み/提出する 指名する.))

株ing the folder. (Read Only)

Here's how I 株d the folder, 9/25, between a Windows 11 プロの/賛成の PC (The Sharer) and a Windows 10 Home PC.

Still on The Sharer, using とじ込み/提出する Explorer, 権利-click on SharedFromPcHarryPotter. Click on 所有物/資産/財産s. 株ing. 株.

That should open a "網状組織 接近" dialog.

In "Choose people to 株 with, use the dropdown to make "Everyone" 利用できる, and select that.

Click the "株" button, lower 権利.

You may be asked "Do you want to turn on 網状組織 発見 for all public 網状組織s?" If you are, say "No, make the 網状組織 I am connected to 私的な."

When you have, you should see "Your folder is 株d."

公式文書,認める 負かす/撃墜する the text on the first line of the 入ること/参加(者) which should now be in the "Individual Items" box. 公式文書,認める the characters and the 事例/患者. This will be your "株 接近", aka "株 指名する". I.e. the 指名する of this, as seen by PCs out on the LAN. (探検者s.) If you used the folder 指名する I used above, the 株 接近 will be under "SharedFromPcHarryPotter". This is the 指名する of the 株.

Click "Done", but don't click 支援する out of the 株ing 過程 any その上の than that for now.

Click on "前進するd 株ing". It would probably be 同様に to 減ずる the number of 同時の 使用者s. I 削減(する) it 負かす/撃墜する to 5, to leave some wiggle room. (I rar5ely connect more than one 探検者 at time... but who knows? What happens if several instances of とじ込み/提出する Explorer are looking at the 株d folder?)

Still in the 前進するd 株ing dialog, click on "許可s".

Select the Everyone 使用者, if it isn't already selected, and take away the 十分な 支配(する)/統制する and Change 許可s.

ALSO take them away from any other 使用者s, 含むing 行政官/管理者s. (Don't worry, you are only taking away the 許可s on the !)

Click 承認する, 承認する, 承認する... to 支援する out of the dialogs.

Your 株 is in place! Now... how do you use it?...

(If it all goes horribly wrong, you can UNshare the folder if you go 負かす/撃墜する the 所有物/資産/財産s/ 株ing/ 前進するd 株ing path.)

Go to a different computer on the LAN. This will be The 探検者 for now. (Other computers on the LAN will also be able to be 探検者s in 予定 course.)

Open an instance of とじ込み/提出する Explorer

Put "\\" and the 指名する of the 株 into the とじ込み/提出する Explorer 演説(する)/住所 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業. (You need to put the insertion point to the 権利 of anything already in the 演説(する)/住所 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業 before you type the two \'s, which will select anything there which will therefore disappear as soon as you type the first \.) (You can check that you have the 指名する 権利 by searching settings to "見解(をとる) your PC 指名する". You have to be fussy about the 事例/患者 you use.)

... and 圧力(をかける) "Enter". You may get a dialog 招待するing you enter your 網状組織 信任状 to スピードを出す/記録につける into The Sharer... It will ask for a 使用者 指名する and password. In the simple シナリオ 存在 現在のd here, these are just your 使用者 指名する and スピードを出す/記録につける in password ("PIN") for the 探検者. (More コンビナート/複合体 手はず/準備 are possible, if you 始める,決める up 第2位 使用者s, for 事例/患者s where you don't want the people fetching things from the sharer to know the admin creds.)

If you 簡単に get "Enter 網状組織 信任状" again, try to get the password 権利 a few times. No joy? It's a problem with the 使用者 you are asking to go in as. This time the 事例/患者 IS important. "BossUser" won't count for "Bossuser". Use "More choices" to try changing the 使用者 指名する for your account different. You need the 指名する (and password) of a 使用者 on The Sharer.

Major Weirdness

I hope you won't 苦しむ this blight. It's only the second time I've 遭遇(する)d it in over 20 years of doing this sort of thing. (I didn't solve it, last time)

What is your 使用者 指名する?

That shouldn't be hard! But いつかs it is. I have fought tooth and nail to 始める,決める my Windows 環境s up with a 地元の admin 使用者.

Mistakes during that may explain the に引き続いて...

For most 目的s, my "使用者 指名する" is as you would 推定する/予想する. The folder under C:/使用者s/ may not be the same as my "obvious" 使用者 指名する, but that doesn't seem to have consequences.

However, when it comes to 調印 in (from The 探検者) to a 使用者 on The Sharer, very infrequently my "使用者 指名する" isn't what I'd 推定する/予想する.

I 急いで to say that while this 現象 arises infrequently, when it does, it is a 一貫した oddity.

If, when you try to connect to your Sharer from one of your 探検者s, you 繰り返して get the "Enter 網状組織 信任状" dialog, do the に引き続いて...

On The Sharer, with とじ込み/提出する Explorer, navigate to the folder that is 恐らく 株d.

権利 click, and then click "所有物/資産/財産s".

When that dialog opens, click on the 安全 tab.

If what I've 示唆するd in the 構成要素 before the "Major Weirdness" sub-長,率いるing has gone によれば 計画(する), there should be a box 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)ing "Group or 使用者 指名するs".

Ignore the に引き続いて 入ること/参加(者)s: Everyone, SYSTEM, 行政官/管理者s.

That should leave one with starting with your 使用者 指名する, as familiar to you.

に引き続いて that, in parentheses, there should be two things separated by a backslash... e.g., if you think your 使用者 指名する is Alice25Aug, using a computer 指名するd "MyAug25Pc", the whole line you would 普通は see is...

Alice25Aug (MYAUG25PC\Alice25Aug)

(Don't ask me why the computer 指名する is all in caps...特に as the 指名する can be 事例/患者 極度の慎重さを要する in some 事例/患者s. It just is. Always look hard for errors of capitalization when things aren't working.)

That's what I'd 推定する/予想する to see... 普通は!

If the last bit is NOT your 同等(の) of "Alice25Aug", try using THAT as your "使用者 指名する" when, while trying to connect to The Sharer from The 探検者

My very best wishes to you. I've spent about four hours on this Weirdness.

=== Printer! For 地元の use, and for other machines on the LAN

While I moan about the changes the past 30 years have seen, I will 収容する/認める that USB is a Good Thing, and that moving on from having to manually 任命する/導入する drivers is probably a good thing too.

(I've also done some minor 公式文書,認めるs about setting up a printer in September 25. They (機の)カム after these 公式文書,認めるs had been started.)

Getting a printer on your machine these days is, usually, 平易な. Believe it or not I can't feel the need to say a lot about that.Just now, 2 Nov 21, this is what "setting up my printer" took...

(My reward for the morning's dogged struggles?)

So! Basic printing in place.

My printer also has a scanner. No problem. It wasn't yet 利用できる. I'm not complaining- I am no fan of too many things happening "automatically", behind the scenes.

Went to the Brother website.

Of course, the machine you are setting up may not need its own printer. It may use one on some other machine on the LAN.

If you do put a printer on the machine you are setting you, once you have your printer connected and working, you might want to make it 利用できる to other computers on the LAN.

Even that... I hope you'll find... isn't terribly difficult.

=== Large 使用/適用s and その上の settings changes.

Finally, I 任命する/導入する any remaining large ソフトウェア 一括s I need... Libre Office, email (弁護士の)依頼人, etc. After this, doing disk images becomes a slower 過程, eating up much bigger chunks of 貯蔵. One of the joys of Libre Office is that you really don't need to 支援する up that system ソフトウェア. I might keep a copy of the 体制/機構 とじ込み/提出する, in 事例/患者 I don't like a 未来 解放(する) of the 控訴, but it 任命する/導入するs quickly and easily. If you are using Microsoft's "Office", and have to 再構築する your system on a new 運動 after a disk 衝突,墜落, even if you have a Microsoft-供給(する)d CD with the 体制/機構 ソフトウェア on it, you may 遭遇(する) difficulties.

In some 事例/患者s you will also want to put old 文書s and other data (photos, databases, etc) on your machine, and this is the time to do it.

Indulge me? A few 公式文書,認めるs to myself here. (I 現実に use what is on this page when setting up my own systems: Delphi 4 on CD6057(UK), 6059(US). Kith&肉親,親類 on CD563... or online? (公式文書,認める: ICS comes in 見解/翻訳/版s for 1-6, and for 7 up.)

=== The Big Question

  The Big Question is....

Will Your Backup Do Its 職業, if the day comes???

The question arises not only if you have created a 運動 image as per my suggestions, but in general with all forms of backup and 回復する 選択s.

Backup? What backup? Oh yes! I remember! The one discussed a long time ago, at the start of this page.

I hope you won't be asking "Will it work?" any time soon. But the day may come. A discussion that may be useful to you follows...

As an illustration of the problems that I'm worrying about, let's say you've built a hotel. You've fitted it with sprinklers, in 事例/患者 there is a 解雇する/砲火/射撃. How do you 実験(する) them? Not 平易な!

And so it is with backups. It is a major 苦痛 to 実験(する) some of the 選択s you have 利用できる to you.... but better to have them, than to not have them. They might work!

(Probably 時代遅れの... it may, October 2021, Windows 10, not be this simple... but there WILL BE a way... of you have the disk image!)

As I said before: If your system dies, if you made a disk (system) image, you will use your it as follows.

(I 収容する/認める that this is あらましの. It is also untested, 10/21... several more 圧力(をかける)ing 問題/発行するs are taking DAYS in this "simple update" of this page. But I have a high degree of 信用/信任 that this is at least の近くに, and do-able. And at the very worst, no 害(を与える) will have been done by making the system image. Unless it made you over-確信して. NEVER 信用 a computer, no 事柄 how many learned tutorials you have worked hard to fully master.)

If, as I started to say, your system 完全に dies, you will need three things...

The third element is the one I can help you with least, here, now.

BTSTs are 一般的に a little (8k might do!) USB memory stick/ thumbdrive. You "do things" to the BIOS, if necessary, and then tell the system to reboot. If your BTST is what is needed, you then arrive at the Windows 体制/機構 dialog. The really, really low level Windows 体制/機構 dialog. You may never have seen it. This is a whole different thing than the Windows Settings page.

You connect the hard 運動 with the system image, say "go", and go away and mow the lawn or something. And when you come 支援する, in theory, your computer is nearly ready to go!

----------------
What is the BTST and where did you get it?

If you funk making one, as I have, for now, I 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑う that any competent computer 修理 shop will have one, can do the system 回復する for you. (This will 含む whatever was on the hard 運動(s) when you made the image.. the system ソフトウェア, apps, your 文書s and data. See why the not inconsiderable work is 価値(がある) the time and 成果/努力?!)

In a perfect world, in 事例/患者 there are small things to make a nuisance of themselves, you will, before your system dies, make your own BTST. The nice people who created the guide I created this from also created a guide to making your BTST. They use it's proper 指名する: "マスコミ 創造 道具". The マスコミ 創造 道具 is a USB flash 運動/ memory stick/ thumbdrive with some data and programs on it. See www.windowscentral.com/how-create-windows-10-usb-bootable-マスコミ-uefi-support#create_windows10_uefi_mct for all the gory 詳細(に述べる)s. Or join me in just praying that someone will be able to help you when the day comes. (I AM trying to go off, 熟考する/考慮する that page, but there are ten other things in line ahead of that.)

Wrapping this up...

It sounds like a lot of work, and it is. But it will often (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域 the 代案/選択肢: Starting from scratch with a new computer. That's not to say that there is never a 事例/患者 for just starting from scratch... いつかs it just isn't cost 効果的な to try to 再構築する a sick machine. It depends on your 約束 in the idea that the 残り/休憩(する) of the machine is okay, and on how ひどく customized the system was for your wants and needs.

I hope you will never need your disk images! But if you want the 選択 of considering doing a "回復する from image", the above may have been enough to give you that 選択. Feedback always welcome (接触する 詳細(に述べる)s at end.)

=== 現在進行中の backups... 特に 文書s and data

Is making disk images the way 今後 for your backup needs once a machine is up and running?

What do you want from your backup 決まりきった仕事s? 十分な disk images will become more tedious as the 構成要素 on your PC 拡大するs.

There is no one "権利 way". You will have to educate yourself as to the 選択s, and 始める,決める up your own "system", your own way of working. A way that gives you a good balance between 保護 and workload.

I think the best way to 保護する yourself from losing 文書s and data in the event of a 衝突,墜落... or loss to 窃盗/ 大災害... is to be very methodical about where you put things, and keep second copies either on thumbdrives or other hard 運動s. Those 運動s might be connected from time to time 経由で USB, or they might be どこかよそで on a LAN, or even out in cyberspace.

I like the 解放する/自由な Cobian Backup (aka Cobian Gavity) or Cobian Reflector (newer 製品) for my backup needs. It isn't "simple", but it has 広大な/多数の/重要な 能力s. See my 推薦 of the Cobian backup 解答s , above.

When you are thinking about a backup 政策, consider the ソフトウェア for syncing 同様に as backup ソフトウェア. ("Syncing" is perhaps a simpler 概念.) I 港/避難所't gone 負かす/撃墜する that path myself for さまざまな 推論する/理由s, but it is certainly better than nothing!

Besides 支援 up the obvious things... your 文書s, pictures, databases, etc., consider things like your email 演説(する)/住所 調書をとる/予約する, browser bookmarks.

A decent essay on backup would be longer than all of what I have written here about good steps to take during the 初期の 始める,決める up of a new machine. I'll try to 令状 such an essay one day. In the 合間, be careful. Ask yourself what you would lose if a どろぼう stole your PC today... and find a way to 保護する yourself from the consequence of such loses!

It is a tremendously important 支配する. I am sure there are many good essays about it on the internet. Do at least think about the 支配する. What you need will be subtly different from what another 使用者 needs. You will have to adapt any advice you find to your own use of the computer.
