You may find that the database 存在 shipped with OpenOffice (ver.2 and higher) delights you as much as it has me. This page tries to help you use it.

Forget anything you may have heard about Adabas, which （機の）カム with 星／主役にする Office, the 商業の 見解／翻訳／版 of Open Office 1. The 現在の Open Office's database, "Base", aka "ooBase", is 関係のない. And remember that Open Office, 含むing ooBase, is 解放する／自由な! But don't let that fool you. And it's not new. Big organizations, 政府 and 非軍事の, are 可決する・採択するing it as their 基準 office 控訴... and saving million$, but still Getting The 職業 Done.

This page is "browser friendly". Make your browser window as wide as you want it. The text will flow nicely for you. It is easier to read in a 狭くする window. With most browsers, 圧力（をかける）ing 加える, minus or 無 while the 支配（する）／統制する 重要な (ctrl) is held 負かす／撃墜する will change the texts size. (大きくする, 減ずる, 回復する to default, それぞれ.) A 事例／患者 熟考する／考慮する: Working with data from outside Open Office, and creating something useful from it _______________

In another essay, I wrote up parts of my database for keeping 跡をつける of my 投資するing 決定／判定勝ち（する）s, and the history of changes to my holdings arising from 分裂（する）s, spin offs, and the like.

In this 文書, I'm going to relate a very "real world" (i.e. messy!) need and 解答.

I needed a very simple 文書: A two column （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する with companies 指名するs in the first column, and the number of 株 I owned in each in the second column.

Oddly enough, I didn't have an 平易な way to get this! I had a way to get a more コンビナート／複合体 （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する. It was 類似の to the one I needed, but had more than two columns: One for each of my 仲買業 accounts.

The （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する I 手配中の，お尋ね者 had to be in a form that I could 輸入する into a spreadsheet. To that, I 追加するd a column (by 手渡す) with the price per 株 that each company was 価値（がある） on a particular date, and then I had the spreadsheet multiply the number of 株 I had by the value per 株, so that I could see which were my important holdings, and which holdings 事柄d いっそう少なく.

Yes... there are ways the whole thing could have been done within the database. I didn't want that, though. I 手配中の，お尋ね者 the spreadsheet.

How it was done

So. What was 利用できる to me, to work with?

One thing I had was a .CSV とじ込み／提出する that 含む／封じ込めるd lots of stuff, but for our story only two of the fields 事柄d: Company 指名する and 株 追加するd or 除去するd.

CSV とじ込み／提出する: A "lingua franca" for database and spreadsheet data. Most databases and spreadsheets 普通は save their data in weird, wonderful, and often secret "codes" which are 罰金 when you want to use the data with the 使用／適用 that created it, but tedious さもなければ.

While a CSV とじ込み／提出する usually throws things (like formatting) away, it does have the virtue of 存在 "readable" by just about any 使用／適用.

I've written several pages about CSV, if you want to learn more One is just a simple 声明 of what CSV is. From there you can 接近 other pages with （警察などへの）密告，告訴（状） about CSV and OpenOffice in general. Many elements of what CSV とじ込み／提出するs are can be inferred from the 構成要素 below.

My data （機の）カム from Paradox... the database program I use for things that predate the availability of ooBase. Paradox makes it 平易な to 輸出（する） data to the CSV 判型.

I started up ooCalc, and asked to open a とじ込み／提出する. Because the 指名する of the とじ込み／提出する I was 開始 ended ".csv", ooCalc (正確に) assumed this was a CSV とじ込み／提出する, and so an extra dialog popped up along the way of 開始 the とじ込み／提出する.

That dialog 許すd me to tell ooCalc a few things about the exact "flavor" of CSV used in the とじ込み／提出する I was 開始. What special character had been 始める，決める aside to 示す the end of one field, the start of another? Were text strings enclosed in 引用するs? And so on.

Because ooCalc is 井戸／弁護士席 written, it was 平易な to get those questions answered 正確に, and, a moment later, I had a spreadsheet which looked much like an ooBase （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する. I had 列／漕ぐ／騒動s with 記録，記録的な／記録するs, each made up of columns 持つ／拘留するing field data.

Remember I said that the source of my data had "extra stuff"? I just 削除するd those columns from the spreadsheet.

I was left with just two columns- company 指名する, and a number of 株.

A Good Start Made, Then.... BUT!

But! There was frequently more than one line for any one company. The spreadsheet showed the whole history of my 投資するing! For example, there was one line 説 KTEK 100 and another 説 KTEK -100, 反映するing the fact that years ago I bought 100 株 of KTEK, and not long after sold them again, since when I've had nothing to do with the company.

I needed to 強固にする／合併する／制圧する everything, and throw out all of the things like KTEK where the 逮捕する of my activities to date is no 株 in a particular company.

At this point, I felt ooBase could help, and I was 権利 Nothing could be easier... when you know how!

Remember: By now, my spreadsheet consists of two columns, many 列／漕ぐ／騒動s.

I 挿入するd a 列／漕ぐ／騒動 at the 最高の，を越す of the spreadsheet, and put labels on the columns: Co (for "company") and Shrs, for "number of 株".

I saved my work from time to time, of course, taking care to save it in the usual ooCalc 判型, as an .ods とじ込み／提出する. (You 確実にする this by setting the "save as type" parameter during the "Save As" dialog.)

I then selected ALL of the 構成要素 in the spreadsheet, 含むing the column headings I'd recently 挿入するd.

Copied what I'd selected.

Started up ooBase, creating a new database along the way. In its own folder, unregistered.

Once the main 事業／計画（する） 経営者／支配人 window appeared, I made sure the "（米）棚上げする／（英）提議するs" 仕事 was selected, and then 権利 clicked in the "（米）棚上げする／（英）提議するs" pane

Clicked the "Paste" 選択.

Chose StockHldgs as the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する 指名する, and said that what I was pasting consisted of 鮮明度／定義 and data.

In the next dialog, "適用する columns", I used the "> >" button to put both the Co and Shrs columns in the 権利 手渡す, "to be 輸入するd", window.

Clicked Next

Changed the Shrs Field type to "Decimal- 4 decimal places"

Clicked Create.

ooBase やめる 適切に complained about the 欠如（する） of a 最初の／主要な 重要な, but gave me a "create one now" button, which I used.

Brilliant! My data was now in ooBase.

Rabbit caught. Make stew....

Next I 手配中の，お尋ね者 to "boil it 負かす／撃墜する."

Used the wizard to create a query.

Took just the Co and Shrs fields from the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する for the query.

Sorted by Co

Didn't 始める，決める any search 条件s.

始める，決める "詳細（に述べる） or 要約" to create a 要約 query, using "get the sum of" the field "Shrs"

Didn't use the 偽名，通称s feature.

The 即座の result was a shock: It gave numbers of 株, but no company 指名するs!

の近くにd the query. 再開するd it, but in design 方式. I.e. I 権利 clicked on the query's 指名する in the 事業／計画（する） 経営者／支配人 window, and then selected "Edit"

Ah ha! The company field was indeed part of my query, but the "明白な" box wasn't ticked. Ticked it. Saved query. Re-ran query. Got just the results I 手配中の，お尋ね者! (井戸／弁護士席, the columns weren't in the order I'd 推定する／予想するd, but that's not going to be a problem.

Why must a man's reach 越える his しっかり掴む?

I then spent many hours trying to do something which should have been simple. Bah. Will tell you about it another time.

However, it turns out that ooBase and ooCalc are exceedingly clever. I would never have guessed that the に引き続いて is possible, but something at oooForum.org tipped me off. (give them a try. You don't need to 登録（する） to read old 地位，任命するs.)

I navigated to the main 事業／計画（する） 管理／経営 window of ooBase. Clicked on "Queries" in the "Database" pane. (The one filling the left of the window.)

Once I'd done that, I could see the query I'd created and saved. The one we were discussing a moment ago.

I did not open it. I 単に 権利 clicked, and then clicked on "copy".

I then navigated to an empty ooCalc worksheet, and 権利 clicked on a 独房 ばく然と in the upper left. Sure enough, there was a "paste" 選択. When I clicked it, the ooCalc worksheet filled with the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する that the query produced. Brilliant!

I had what I 手配中の，お尋ね者: A spreadsheet with one 列／漕ぐ／騒動 per company, and my holdings in that company, the total across all my accounts, 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる）d next to the company 指名する.

The 残り／休憩（する） of working out which were the important companies was so 歩行者 that I won't bore you with it. I didn't use anthing clever to input the 現在の 株 prices. I just did that "by 手渡す".
