Open Office Database 事例/患者 熟考する/考慮する
Designing a 最初の/主要な 重要な to distinguish 調書をとる/予約するs in a collection

You may find that the database 存在 shipped with OpenOffice (ver.2 and higher) delights you as much as it has me. This page tries to help you use it.

Forget anything you may have heard about Adabas, which (機の)カム with 星/主役にする Office, the 商業の 見解/翻訳/版 of Open Office 1. The 現在の Open Office's database, "Base", aka "ooBase", is 関係のない. And remember that Open Office, 含むing ooBase, is 解放する/自由な! But don't let that fool you. And it's not new. Big organizations, 政府 and 非軍事の, are 可決する・採択するing it as their 基準 office 控訴... and saving million$, but still Getting The 職業 Done.

There's more about ooBase in the main 索引 to this 構成要素.

This page is "browser friendly". Make your browser window as wide as you want it. The text will flow nicely for you. It is easier to read in a 狭くする window. With most browsers, 圧力(をかける)ing 加える, minus or 無 while the 支配(する)/統制する 重要な (ctrl) is held 負かす/撃墜する will change the texts size. (大きくする, 減ずる, 回復する to default, それぞれ.) (This is more fully explained, and there's another tip, at my 力/強力にする Browsing page.)

An example of a 最初の/主要な 重要な... and 事柄s arising along the way.

I wrote this at a time when I had recently begun collecting rare 調書をとる/予約するs. The に引き続いて example covers ground which might 適用する to keeping 跡をつける of many, many classes of 反対するs. (Years later, I am still collecting 調書をとる/予約するs... and still playihng with databases!)

For さまざまな 推論する/理由s, not least so that I can build a 井戸/弁護士席 建設するd database, I 手配中の,お尋ね者 a short, unique identifier for each of the 容積/容量s in my collection. If you read through this essay, it may help you design the 支配するs for an identifier you need for some 仕事 you are 請け負うing.

If you are short of time... or 利益/興味!...

I hope that there will be some readers who are facscinated by everything below. If you want a quick... 井戸/弁護士席, quicker... discussion, I wrote a simpler page about easily managed short, computer friendly, unique identifiers in September 2020.... at my new 場所/位置, which has HTML5 pages.

In the beginning, there were serial numbers...

... even before there were databases!

I could just go through my collection, and number the first 調書をとる/予約する I come to "001", the second "002", and so on.

That would 会合,会う the basic needs of the database, a unique identifier for each item covered... but it would be a very 天然のまま answer. We can do so much better. In this essay, I will try to show you how an answer could be better, and how to 達成する such an answer.

By the way, if you like the 計画/陰謀 I 述べる, I have a Windows computer program you are welcome to use which 生成するs identifiers as 述べるd. At them moment, to 得る it, you download a .zip とじ込み/提出する which not only has the program (CD93.exe), but also all of the とじ込み/提出するs you would need if you 手配中の,お尋ね者 to use Lazarus to make changes to it... But you can download the .zip, 抽出する just the .exe とじ込み/提出する, and use it, if you like. There's a screenshot and more 詳細(に述べる)s in the page explaining the programming. Don't be 圧倒するd by the screenshot... very "busy"... but using the 使用/適用 is trivial.

Why a short identifier

First, just a quick 公式文書,認める as to why I want a short, unique identifier for each 調書をとる/予約する.

I need to keep 跡をつける of さまざまな things associated with each 調書をとる/予約する. When did I buy it? What did I 支払う/賃金? Where is the 調書をとる/予約する? The first two can be managed by keeping the invoices for my 調書をとる/予約するs. The latter can be 扱うd with a simple 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる).

But how to reliable link this invoice with that 調書をとる/予約する?

Simple! Give each 調書をとる/予約する a short unique ID, even if it is 単に "001", "002"..., and 示す (carefully!) the ID in the 調書をとる/予約する and on the invoice, and then とじ込み/提出する the invoices in the order of the IDs. And, once the 調書をとる/予約する has a unique ID, the "Where" 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) can 含む the unique ID, so that if you have more than one copy of, say, Thornton's Flora, you can tell which copy is in each of the two 場所s for which you have a copy 記録,記録的な/記録するd.

That's just a quick introduction to why having unique identifiers is useful, in general. If you want to use a database in more than a つまずくing manner, you will have to have unique identifiers for each 反対する 記録,記録的な/記録するd in the database, so that you can have "最初の/主要な 重要なs" for your (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs. That's covered in more 詳細(に述べる) in essays I've written about using databases. Let's return to the 現在の example of designing a unique identifier.

Why not just serial numbers?

What's so terrible about just using "001", "002", "003", etc?

The most glaring 欠陥 is that if you have one 調書をとる/予約する called "758" and another called "785", you can やめる easily 令状 one when you mean the other.

Long ago, someone invented the idea of a "checksum". If I 追加する a "checksum" to each of the IDs について言及するd above, they might become "758w" and "785f". "So?", you ask?

Those letters were not chosen at 無作為の. The "w" is what you get if you (or, more likely, you have your computer) 適用する a 支配する. If the same 支配する is given 785, then the 支配する 生成するs an "f".

If you make a mistake when trying to 令状 "758w" and 令状 "785w", then any time that ID is 現在のd to a computer which is checking, the computer will say "Something is wrong. You don't get a "w" from "785". So any bits of lysdexia can be caught.... if you use checksums!

Mitigating the 証拠不十分s in serial numbers

Okay... so our unique identifier is going to have a checksum. (We'll go into the "支配する" used later.

Let's see what we can do about two more shortcomings of serial numbers.

As your collection grows, you have to keep 跡をつける of what the last serial you used was to know what the next one should be. This isn't always a problem, but it can be a nuisance.

In 新規加入, a simple serial number, on its own, tells you very little.

I tend to create unique identifiers as follows, which partly answers both of those 反対s to simple serial numbers.

I'm 令状ing the first 草案 of this on September 28, 2012. If I 追加するd two 調書をとる/予約するs to my collection today, the first might be given the ID "120928a", and the second "120928b".

Even with such a simple system, my unique identifier already tells me a bit about the 調書をとる/予約する 直接/まっすぐに from the ID... the ID tells me when I put the 調書をとる/予約する in the database.

.... and the system has two 欠陥s....

Happily, I can live with both of those shortcomings, for this 事業/計画(する)! But you need to 認める them, and need to ask if either 事柄s to the work you are doing... or, if not, is there a "work around" which will 直す/買収する,八百長をする things for you?

As I am going to give each 容積/容量 a separate ID, I suppose the day may come when I buy a 30 容積/容量 encyclopedia, and need 30 unique identifiers. What will I do? Assuming I 港/避難所't bought any 調書をとる/予約するs the previous day, I will スピードを出す/記録につける the first 26 容積/容量s in as having been bought then, and take care of the other four as if bought on the day I'm doing the work.

In fact, I ーするつもりである to 割り当てる IDs to my 調書をとる/予約するs in not by the date they were entered into my database but rather by the date I acquired the 調書をとる/予約する. In some 事例/患者s, not many, this will have been before 2001. I was going to reserve all of the IDs for 2000 to use with 調書をとる/予約するs acquired before 2001... but my 神経 failed me, and I decided to encode all of the year into the unique identifier.

You could, of course, 簡単に use "20120928" as the starting point for a 調書をとる/予約する ID based on 2012, September, 28th day. And there will be times when that is 正確に/まさに what you should do. But, other times, the simpler answer ("120928") would be 罰金.

It might seem that a lot of trouble is 存在 taken to save just two characters in the unique identifier. Yes. And that trouble will be repaid.

Before we go on, 公式文書,認める that for September we used "09", not just "9". If the day had been, say, the 5th, we would have used "05", not "5". Why? What date would "2012123" be? 23nd of January? 3rd of December? Anyway. It Just Is Better if the number of characters used for any of the parts of the unique identifier remains the same across all of the さまざまな IDs 割り当てるd.

Starting with "20120928" an ID based on 2012, September, 28th, we're going to do two things to 縮める it.

In place of the "20" to 示す the century, we're going to use a letter. "a" for 18, "b" for 19, "c" for 20, etc. (Hence, there will usually be a "c" here.)

(P.S.: This part will 現実に usually be an "f".. this is 予定 to a change from defining "a" as 18 to defining it as "15"... a change in the 早期に 行う/開催する/段階s of the programming, but after the 本体,大部分/ばら積みの of the documentation was done. At this point, the 残り/休憩(する) of this 文書 反映するs the old 計画(する)... "c"=20)

And, more radically... but you soon get used to it... we're going to 縮む the month 指示する人(物) to just one character. "1" for January, "2" for February, etc... but what about October, November, December? We'll use "a", "b" and "c" for those months.

Just to relieve your mind, and 火刑/賭ける a (人命などを)奪う,主張する to not 存在 完全に obsessive about 縮めるing ID strings, I will point out that the day... for which I 提案する using two characters... could have been encoded with "a", "b", "c", etc. for the first, the second, the third, etc days of the month. But remember that the first must be shown as "01", not just "1"!

A little thing... I recommend using lower 事例/患者 letters most of the time, e.g. use "a", not "A". Not only are lower 事例/患者 letters easier to type, 特に if you are 持つ/拘留するing a 調書をとる/予約する open with one 手渡す while you try to enter data with the other, but they are also more readable. A "P" and a "B" are not so very different, visually. On the other 手渡す, the 形態/調整s of a "p" and a "b" have differences 欠如(する)ing in the upper 事例/患者 代案/選択肢s.

So... the first 調書をとる/予約する acquired on the 3rd of November, 2012, is going to be given the に引き続いて ID: "c12b03a".

What if we don't know the date of 取得/買収 正確に/まさに? As it happens, in this 事例/患者, I am not going to use the に引き続いて system, here... but you might want to use it for the work you are doing. If you know the year and month, but not the day, you could put "99" in as the day. If you knew the year, but not even the month, you could put "z" for the month, "99" for the day. There are usually ways to do things... but they always come with a price, and if you aren't careful, you only discover the price when you've already 割り当てるd more unique identifiers than you want to go 支援する and 改訂する. Remember... it won't be just the 調書をとる/予約するs that need the IDs in them changes, but also the invoices associated with the 調書をとる/予約する, etc, etc.

What I am going to do about 調書をとる/予約するs for which I do not know the 取得/買収 date is the に引き続いて....

For recently acquired 調書をとる/予約するs, for which I know だいたい when I acquired them, I will (不足などを)補う a "stand in" invoice, with a date of my guessing, but on the invoice I will make a 公式文書,認める that the invoice is "a 偽の", and that the date is a guess.

For 調書をとる/予約するs acquired long ago... I have one that was given to me many years ago by my grandmother, who herself had had it for many years. I'd like to use the date she acquired it, but that datum is lost. For such 調書をとる/予約するs, I will use the date I 割り当てるd the unique identifier... but I will use "z" as the letter for the first such done on a given day, a "y" for the next, a "x" for the next, and so on. Again, a "偽の invoice" will be 用意が出来ている for the 調書をとる/予約する, and what I know of its history can be 記録,記録的な/記録するd there. (The database will also have a (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する for machine readable 公式文書,認めるs about individual 調書をとる/予約するs, too, of course.)

Use the 計画/陰謀, Luke....

So now we have a 計画/陰謀 for our unique identifiers....

cyymdds

The "cyymdd" part 普通は encodes the date a 調書をとる/予約する was acquired. The last character in the unique identifier is a serial... "a" will be used when 過程ing the first 調書をとる/予約する of a given day's 取得/買収s, "b" for the second, and so on... with "z", "y", "x", "w", and "v" (only) reserved for 調書をとる/予約するs for which the date of 取得/買収 isn't known, in which 事例/患者 the cyymdd part will be derived from the day the 調書をとる/予約する was given its unique identifier.

The checksum

In 新規加入 to all of the above, we are going to 追加する one more character, the checksum.

It will be a letter, but this time it may be upper 事例/患者 or lower 事例/患者. Why?

The "letter" will 現実に be standing for a number. It might be that "a" stood for 1, "b" for 2, .... "z" for 26, "A" for 27, "B" for 28, and so on... but the 詳細(に述べる) doesn't 事柄. The 推論する/理由 why we will 耐える the hassle of a 事例/患者 極度の慎重さを要する datum here is that it 減ずるs the chance of the checksum failing to catch an error on our part.

I'll spare you the 詳細(に述べる) of why having codes for more than 1-26 makes the checksum better, unless enough people 令状 to ask why this is.

And, while we're 存在 tricky... and all of this will be taken care of by the computer anyway... we will not use all of the letters 利用できる to us. We won't use, for instance, o or O, l or I. They are too easily 混乱させるd with other characters. To you and me, whether something is an "oh" (O) or a 無 (0) doesn't 事柄. But if you have the wrong one in the checksum's place, then what you've entered will be 容認できない. (Substitutions in other parts of the unique identifier string will also 原因(となる) the checksum to say "error", but I think it reasonable to hope that 使用者s will use the 権利 characters in other places. And if they don't, they will have to learn to!)

Lastly, a little 新たな展開

So far so good?

We're going to 改訂する one part of our 支配するs for creating unique identifiers for the 調書をとる/予約するs in my collection.

So far, you might think that we've defined the unique identifier as 存在 made up as follows...

cyymddse

... where "e" stands for the error checking checksum. (Couldn't use "c", could I? Already used to 示す the first character in the string, the one that tells us the century.)

I 港/避難所't, in fact, said that the checksum character should go の上に the 権利 手渡す end.

In fact, it should be pre-pended to all of the characters we discussed before we got to discussing the checksum character. The unique identifier 判型 should in fact be....

ecyymdds

The 推論する/理由 is as follows...

It will help the database ソフトウェア which these IDs are going to be used in if differences between the IDs are ありふれた in the 早期に (left 手渡す) parts of the strings. In a "perfect, for the database, world", we'd code the day as a letter, as discussed before, and make the string "edmyycs", but that would make human use of the strings tedious. Having the first character 高度に variable will be a big help to the database, at little cost to the human. After that, the database's wants can defer to the human's convenience.

Which may leave you with a question:

"Why do the date YY-M-DD? Why not the DD-M-YY we are more familiar with, or, M-DD-YY?"

Here's the answer to that one... and it 付随するs to many places where you are creating 指名するs from dates.

If you use yymdd, then if you have a bunch of 記録,記録的な/記録するs (or とじ込み/提出するs, or anything else) with yymdd IDs or 指名するs, then a simple alphabetical sort, even outside of a database, of the IDs or 指名するs also gives you a chronological sort.

Don't forget,, if you like the 計画/陰謀 I 述べる, I have a (解放する/自由な) Windows computer program you are welcome to use which 生成するs identifiers as 述べるd.
