Open Office Base (database) (ooBase) Tutorials
その上の Help with 最初の/主要な 重要なs

You may find that the database 存在 shipped with OpenOffice (ver.2 and higher) delights you as much as it has me. This page tries to help you use it.

Forget anything you may have heard about Adabas, which (機の)カム with 星/主役にする Office, the 商業の 見解/翻訳/版 of Open Office 1. The 現在の Open Office's database, "Base", aka "ooBase", is 関係のない. And remember that Open Office, 含むing ooBase, is 解放する/自由な! But don't let that fool you. And it's not new. Big organizations, 政府 and 非軍事の, are 可決する・採択するing it as their 基準 office 控訴... and saving million$, but still Getting The 職業 Done.

There's more about ooBase in the main 索引 to this 構成要素.

This page is "browser friendly". Make your browser window as wide as you want it. The text will flow nicely for you. It is easier to read in a 狭くする window. With most browsers, 圧力(をかける)ing 加える, minus or 無 while the 支配(する)/統制する 重要な (ctrl) is held 負かす/撃墜する will change the texts size. (大きくする, 減ずる, 回復する to default, それぞれ.) (This is more fully explained, and there's another tip, at my 力/強力にする Browsing page.)

Please 公式文書,認める the 肩書を与える: "その上の thoughts on 最初の/主要な 重要なs". I have also written an introductory page about 最初の/主要な 重要なs, covering the basics.

最初の/主要な 重要なs... Important Elements of Database Design _______________

Database (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs should (usually) have 最初の/主要な 重要なs.

As discussed in the introductory article, the values in the 最初の/主要な 重要な field of a (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する must all be unique. That is to say that the value in the 最初の/主要な 重要な field of every 記録,記録的な/記録する must be different from the value in every other 記録,記録的な/記録する in the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する.

Often, to 簡単にする 会合 this 必要物/必要条件, the designer of the database decides to 単に use an さもなければ meaningless number. That 作品, but it isn't always necessary to take such a dull approach

Some database 事業/計画(する)s will give you an 平易な time. If you are doing a database 関心ing some automobiles, as long as you can be sure that 非,不,無 will 交換(する) license plates (登録 numbers)... a not-impossible event, but most of us could 割引 it in our database planning... then that could be a good 最初の/主要な 重要な.

If the database is to manage, say, a collection of CDs with computer ソフトウェア on them, the owner may already be giving each a unique serial number, ーするために 簡単にする other 記録,記録的な/記録する keeping.

調書をとる/予約するs have ISBNs. If the database was for 記録,記録的な/記録するing your opinion of different 調書をとる/予約するs, the ISBN would be a good 最初の/主要な 重要な. If it was for 跡をつけるing 調書をとる/予約するs in a library, it would not, by itself, be 満足な... the library might buy two copies of a popular 調書をとる/予約する. We will come 支援する to this example in a moment.

Some databases are about events tied to 明確な/細部 times. Perhaps the database is about 開始s and closings of a bank 丸天井, or some 前提s 保護するd by a 夜盗,押し込み強盗 alarm. In either 事例/患者, the date and time of the event would be a wonderful 最初の/主要な 重要な... meaningful, something that would probably have to be 記録,記録的な/記録するd anyway. See how a 最初の/主要な 重要な doesn't have to be a simple number?

構内/化合物 Keys____________________

There is nothing wrong with using a 選び出す/独身 field for your 最初の/主要な 重要な. I lean に向かって doing so, because it Keeps things Simple. But there are times when it makes sense to 扱う/治療する two (or more) fields as 連合させるd into a 選び出す/独身 field, and make that "事実上の field" (not a "proper" 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語) the 最初の/主要な 重要な. When you do this, you are using what is 適切に called a "構内/化合物 重要な".

Here's an example.

搭乗 schools are いつかs 要求するd to 監視する the 負わせる of their pupils. Even in our world of men with clipboards, I'll take the chance that the 当局 will never 要求する a school to take more than one 負わせる 記録,記録的な/記録する per day for any child.

Thus, that (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) would be 蓄える/店d in a database with at least the に引き続いて fields: Child's 指名する, date of 重さを計るing, 負わせる on that day.

See the 最初の/主要な 重要な to use? Yes! A 構内/化合物 重要な consisting of the child's 指名する and the date.

Notice I said "take the chance" a moment ago? In a perfect world, database designers can find 最初の/主要な 重要なs which the designer knows will never result in two 記録,記録的な/記録するs with the same value in the 最初の/主要な 重要な field. Part of the 技術s you must develop, if you are going to be successful in 計算するing, is the 技術 of imagining the things that lesser mortals fail to imagine.

Making a 構内/化合物 field 最初の/主要な 重要な in ooBase____________________

So... that's what a 構内/化合物 最初の/主要な 重要な is. Now we're going to make one.

Usually, you 設立する the 最初の/主要な 重要な, 構内/化合物 or さもなければ, when you first design the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する, before you have 追加するd any data. You often can re-define the 最初の/主要な 重要な, 含むing changing it from a simple 重要な to a 構内/化合物 重要な, after some data has been entered into the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する... with the に引き続いて 強制: At the time you 指定する a field or fields as a 最初の/主要な 重要な, the data (in combination, if you are making a 構内/化合物 重要な) must be unique in each of the fields. If it isn't, a やめる helpful error message will arise. If this happens, you 単に edit the data in the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する, and then try again to make the 最初の/主要な 重要な as you want it.

To 指定する a 構内/化合物 最初の/主要な 重要な...

の近くに the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する if it is open.

In the ooBase main 事業/計画(する) 管理/経営 window, select "(米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs" in the column at the left, then 権利-click on the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する you wish to re-design. Click on Edit in the pop up menu.

This will open the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する in design 見解(をとる). The fields will be 陳列する,発揮するd in 列/漕ぐ/騒動s at the 最高の,を越す of the page, one field per 列/漕ぐ/騒動.

Select the fields you want to 連合させる into your 構内/化合物 重要な. A field is selected if the whole 列/漕ぐ/騒動 is 最高潮の場面d. Just click on the left 手渡す column of the first 列/漕ぐ/騒動 you want 含むd in the 重要な; the 列/漕ぐ/騒動 should すぐに become 最高潮の場面d. 持つ/拘留する 負かす/撃墜する the 支配(する)/統制する 重要な... until その上の notice. Click on the left 手渡す column of any 列/漕ぐ/騒動s you want to 追加する to the 重要な. (Click on a 列/漕ぐ/騒動 again to de-select it, if you click on a 列/漕ぐ/騒動 by mistake).

When- not before- you have selected the 列/漕ぐ/騒動s of all the fields you want in the 構内/化合物 重要な, 解放(する) the 支配(する)/統制する 重要な. 権利 click again in the left 手渡す column of one of the selected 列/漕ぐ/騒動s. Click on "最初の/主要な 重要な" in the pop up menu. You should see a little 厚かましさ/高級将校連 重要な at the left 手渡す end of each of the 列/漕ぐ/騒動s. 職業 done! (Don't worry about the green triangle which is also 現在の by one of the 重要なs. It is just 示すing the 現在/一般に selected 列/漕ぐ/騒動.

Be sure to re-save the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する's design. ooBase will 誘発する you to do that if you の近くに the design window, but you might go off and try your new (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する, and unless you've done the save, I can't 約束 what the result will be.

Onward....

構内/化合物 重要なs continued____________________

Go 支援する to the "bank 丸天井" example given earlier. What if the door on the 丸天井 is wired 直接/まっすぐに to the computer, and there's no way to "fudge" the data. It could easily happen that someone would one day nearly の近くに the door, の近くに it far enough to 誘発する/引き起こす the 創造 of a 記録,記録的な/記録する, and then remember one more thing to go into the 丸天井, re-open the door.... in the same minute as it was "の近くにd". Of course, if the time of の近くにing was 記録,記録的な/記録するd to the second, then it becomes next to impossible for two 記録,記録的な/記録するs to have the same time... but do you want to fill up all that レコード space 記録,記録的な/記録するing what second the door の近くにd?

(To "get real" for a moment: The 記録,記録的な/記録するs are probably going to be kept by 手渡す, and when they are entered into the computer, if someone was daft enough to 記録,記録的な/記録する "の近くにd 10:12, (re)opened 10:12, の近くにd again 10:18", then...

Let's thing その上の about 記録,記録的な/記録するing timestamps. So far in this essay, I've been assuming that a 連合させるd "date-time" will be entered in a 選び出す/独身 field. For the bank 丸天井, this probably makes sense.

What about a database of 出来事/事件s 答える/応じるd to by 救急車s?

In this 事例/患者, it would make sense to 記録,記録的な/記録する the date in one field, and the time in another, and I'll tell you why.

経営者/支配人s of any 緊急 service are always 利益/興味d in the patterns in the 需要・要求するs upon the service. The database of 出来事/事件s 答える/応じるd to, if 適切に 始める,決める up, can tell the 使用者s when the busy times of day are. A medium sized city probably needs more 解雇する/砲火/射撃 engines on 義務 between 4pm and 9pm (急ぐ hour and cooking times) than it does at 4am. Thus, in that database, it makes sense to put the time in one field, the date in another. As long as there aren't two 出来事/事件s starting in the same minute, the date field value and the time field value can be used together in a 構内/化合物 重要な for the 最初の/主要な 重要な. If the 支配(する)/統制する 中心 is much larger, taking calls for a large 全住民, then a third field 含む/封じ込めるing the id of the person taking the call could be 追加するd to the 構内/化合物 重要な, thus keeping the system from 存在 人工的な. (The 緊急 操作者's "ID" would be a 最初の/主要な 重要な in the service's (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する of 従業員s... it would be 決定的な that no two 従業員s have the same id. さもなければ, in theory, a problematic 状況/情勢 could arise: The 状況/情勢 where two 従業員s with the same "id" (not a very good ID(ea) that the circumstance should 存在する!) were both taking an 出来事/事件 報告(する)/憶測 at the same time.)

That's about it__________________

That covers what I 手配中の,お尋ね者 to 追加する to what was said in the tutorial introducing 最初の/主要な 重要なs. The 残り/休憩(する) of this essay, apart from the usual helpful (I hope!) bits at the 底(に届く) of the page, is just more examples, 調査するing 落し穴s and 可能性s.

But onward we go, anyway_________

People's 指名するs....

It is frequently the 事例/患者 that each 記録,記録的な/記録する in a (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する 言及するs to a person.

明白に, even using first 指名する 加える surname ("last" 指名する) won't do... you will soon have two John Smiths, or two other instances of a ありふれた 指名する.

Even if there weren't two John Smiths, however, the 十分な 指名する might not be a good choice for a 最初の/主要な 重要な.

If the database has other (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs, (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs in which people's 指名するs are going to feature, then it will be helpful if there's a quicker way of making an 入ること/参加(者) relating to someone, quicker (and more reliable) than typing "J-o-h-n S-m-i-t-h"... hence abbreviation 計画/陰謀s built upon 初期のs.

You may need an abbreviation that is 平易な for people to remember... the data 支配する may be 与える/捧げるing data, for instance. (When the bank 丸天井 door is の近くにd, perhaps the person who の近くにs it would be 要求するd to put their 指名する into the database, for example.)

Not only are there many John Smiths in the world, but a good number of Jim Smiths, and even some Jane Stevensons. "JS" is just not going to 切り開く/タクシー/不正アクセス it!

But you want something everyone can remember. So just take the first two letters of each part of the 指名する! Our three "JS"s become JoSm, JiSm and JaSt. Hurrah! But of course, there will soon be a second John Smith. Even Joe Smith would 難破させる things.

So you 追加する something extra to the end.

Beware just using "1", "2", "3".... "JoSm2" may feel 侮辱d.

In any 事例/患者, "a", "b", "c", etc, make better differentiators... it takes longer to run out, and reach the need of a 二塁打 letter differentiator. (It is 平易な to get too 関心d with keeping data short, but when you can keep it short, that's good!

One thing that can be used to differentiate people is the day of the month they were born on. Using the 十分な date has problems of unwarranted 陳列する,発揮する of personal (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状), but I don't think many people will have a problem with the day of the month they were born is used as part of their unique ID. And if they do, or if you have two JoSm's born on the same day of the month, 嘘(をつく)! 許す one or the other, or both of them to choose two digits OTHER THAN the day they were born as the last two digits of their ID.

Other quick sources of memorable differentiators: Home telephone numbers, mother's maiden 指名する, father's first 指名する, etc. You just have to 演習 some imagination. But in 新規加入 to thinking of something that people will be able to remember, you have to 心配する ways in which two different people could 結局最後にはーなる with the same ID through your system. And you have to find a way to "break" those "関係".

"Better and better," said Alice_________

Oh, no! I'm not done with using their 指名するs to (不足などを)補う IDs for people yet!

But I'm done with the root of the ID, the JoSm23, or whatever.

Now I want to 追加する a frill. It won't always be possible to 軍隊 this frill on your 使用者s, but when it can be, I'd recommend it.

Take the characters in the root ID, e.g. JoSm23, and 適用する a 決まり文句/製法 to them which will 生成する one more character. 追加する that character to the ID. So, if by your 決まり文句/製法, you get, say, "w", Joe's ID becomes JoSm23w. That final character is called a checksum.

Why? What 決まり文句/製法?

Why: To catch mistakes. If your 決まり文句/製法 is 井戸/弁護士席 chosen, then JoSm23 can only give rise to "w". If someone makes a mistake when 記録,記録的な/記録するing Joe's id somewhere, or if there's a typo when someone is trying to enter "JoSm23w" into the computer, then, if the computer re-calculates what the final character should be (for the six first characters given), and compares it to the 7th character 現実に given, then mistakes can be caught.

(Making the computer do this is possible in ooBase. Not 平易な... but possible. In any 事例/患者, it is やめる simple to check the ID entered against the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する 持つ/拘留するing all of the known IDs. If "w" is the 訂正する checksum to go with JoSm23w, then there won't be another 従業員 with, say, JoSm23x as their 従業員 ID. Good checksum 決まり文句/製法s can 確実にする that no 選び出す/独身 character mistake, or even a transposition, e.g. JoSm32w, can lead to a string that passes the checksum (or 言及/関連 to 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of possible IDs) 実験(する).

What 決まり文句/製法: Let's start with a bad... but 平易な to understand... 決まり文句/製法, just to give you the idea.

Every character you can type, and the space, which really is "a character", although it is 半端物 to us to think of it as such, has an "ASCII code". The code for "A" is 65, the lower 事例/患者 見解/翻訳/版, "a", has a different code (97 as it happens.)

So, you could take the ASCII codes for J, o, S, m, 2 and 3, and 追加する them all up. That would give you やめる a big number. Let's say the total is 347. (It isn't, by the way.) Forget all of the number except the last two digits... 47. Divide that by 4, throwing away any わずかの part. That leaves 23 by a 支配する that could create numbers from 無 up to 24 (99 divided by 4 存在 24 and 3/4s.)

With that 決まり文句/製法, the final step is 平易な: The 使用者's checksum character is the letter of the alphabet you get by counting 今後 as many places as the number you got a moment ago 要求するs. E.g. if the number were 無, the checksum character would be "A", if the number were 1, the checksum character would be "B", etc.

As I said... that's not a very good checksum 支配する, for several 推論する/理由s. JoSm23 and JoSm32 would give the same checksum character, and they should not. A good checksum 支配する will (悪事,秘密などを)発見する transpositions. Also, JoSm23 and JoSm24 would have the same checksum... if I have been lucky with where the 境界 lies. (I didn't do the 計算/見積り. JoSm23 will have the same checksum as three neighbors in the sequence JoSm20... JoSm29, for sure.)

If you want to know more about checksums, Wikipedia has a good article, as you would 推定する/予想する, I hope!

By the way: Yes, I do know about the use of modular arithmetic, which is very useful in such 事柄s. (避けるs the need for the clumsy "divide by 4 and throw away any わずかの part" 機械装置 used above.) But not all readers will know about it.

Oh... and how do you make a good 決まり文句/製法 for calculating a checksum?? That's a 事柄 for another day. If you're ready to try to do this, you probably already know of places you can go for help.

A practical matter_________

If only people were computers, even Windows computers. Computers are much more reliable than people. Suppose we've 生成するd our short form IDs for people in order that 開始s and closings of that bank 丸天井 can be 記録,記録的な/記録するd. Depending on how tamper-proof you need the system, it could be that you 単に keep a clipboard 近づく the 丸天井, with the columns in your database (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する on the page:

従業員 ID code? Yes! You don't want the poor soul who has to type the (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) into the computer to have to 絶えず look up those codes do you? Or 令状 the 指名するs out in 十分な?

However, even though it will not usually be needed, I'd 示唆する... this is the practical 事柄... that you 追加する a column to the page for 従業員 指名する. It will take the 従業員 but a moment to put it 負かす/撃墜する, and when the data 入ること/参加(者) person has a question about what is written in the ID code column, the data 入ること/参加(者) person will have the final column to turn to for help.

If the checksum approach has been used, then the computer can be "taught" to "look at" the 従業員 ID codes as they are typed in, and "complain" if the ID code is impossible. ISBNs, the ID numbers 割り当てるd to 調書をとる/予約するs, have a character within the ISBN which is a checksum digit, for just such use.

The end

Rather abrupt again, I 恐れる. I'll try one day to make better ends for many of my pages on the web!

I dislike 'fancy' websites with more 関心 for a flashy 外見 than for good content. For a pretty picture, I can go to an art gallery. Of course, an attractive 場所/位置 WITH content deserves 賞賛する... as long as that pretty 直面する doesn't cost download time. In any 事例/患者....

I am trying to 現在の this 構成要素 in a 判型 which makes it 平易な for you to USE it. There are two 面s to that: The way it is 分裂(する) up, and the way it is 地位,任命するd. See the main 索引 to this 構成要素 for more (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) about the way it is 分裂(する) up, and the way it is 地位,任命するd.
