OpenOffice 2 Base (database) Tutorials
登録(する)ing Databases
支援 Up ooBase Databases

You may find that the database 存在 shipped with OpenOffice (ver.2 and higher) delights you as much as it has me. This page tries to help you use it.

Forget anything you may have heard about Adabas, which (機の)カム with 星/主役にする Office, the 商業の 見解/翻訳/版 of Open Office 1. The 現在の Open Office's database, "Base", aka "ooBase", is 関係のない. And remember that Open Office, 含むing ooBase, is 解放する/自由な! But don't let that fool you. And it's not new. Big organizations, 政府 and 非軍事の, are 可決する・採択するing it as their 基準 office 控訴... and saving million$, but still Getting The 職業 Done.

There's more about ooBase in the main 索引 to this 構成要素.

This page is "browser friendly". Make your browser window as wide as you want it. The text will flow nicely for you. It is easier to read in a 狭くする window. With most browsers, 圧力(をかける)ing 加える, minus or 無 while the 支配(する)/統制する 重要な (ctrl) is held 負かす/撃墜する will change the texts size. (大きくする, 減ずる, 回復する to default, それぞれ.) (This is more fully explained, and there's another tip, at my 力/強力にする Browsing page.)

This page is more discoursive than is usual in my tutorials. It is not typical of the pages in this website. に向かって the end, there is a bit of "How To" that you may want to check out, even if you can't be bothered with the 残り/休憩(する). It tells you how to 支援する up elements of your database. (And how to do what we'd do with "Save As" in most 使用/適用s.)

First- What is a database?...

いつかs when people speak of "a database", they are just speaking of a 選び出す/独身 (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する, a grid of columns and 列/漕ぐ/騒動s. But if you're not going to at least use a form also, you might 同様に put the data in a spreadsheet.

A better use of the word "database" 暗示するs a collection of one or more (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs (one can be 罰金) and queries, forms and 報告(する)/憶測s designed to make 接近ing the data in those (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs 平易な and 使用者 friendly. In this sense, "the database" is the (独立の)存在 that 含む/封じ込めるs those elements.

一般に, the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs, etc, in "a database" should all be 関心d with a 選び出す/独身 仕事. Examples of "a 仕事": Managing a directory of the people in an organization, 在庫ing 資産s, 跡をつけるing orders and 在庫/株, phonebooks, school 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる)s, etc., etc.

While you are trying to 改善する your ooBase 技術s, you may find yourself with "a database", a collection of (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs, etc, which has un関係のある things in it. If you are just "playing around", just trying to see if you've understood something, then there's no need to start a new database each time you want to, say, make a (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する and a create a 報告(する)/憶測 to 陳列する,発揮する data from it. Just be careful to give any such databases sensible 指名するs. Use 指名するs like "ScrappyExperiments". If in doing some of my tutorials you choose not to open a new database for each one, that will usually be okay. Just be a careful that there is no overlap in the 指名するs of (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs, forms, etc. I have a database called "Tmp". It 含む/封じ込めるs a truly awful mishmash of 捨てるs of 事業/計画(する)s in it. But if I just want to 始める,決める up a (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する to see what values can be put into a "BigInt" field, I can create that (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する within "Tmp" with no consequences. When you are building a 始める,決める of (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs, forms, etc to 演説(する)/住所 some real need, it would be wise to put them all, and only them, in their own database. Starting a new database is not difficult; if in 疑問, do it.

(A その上の 公式文書,認める on the 指名する "Tmp": I never start a とじ込み/提出する's 指名する with "Tmp" unless what I am saving there is not important to me. Because I have followed this 支配する, any time I come across something 指名するd "Tmp...", I know I can 削除する it, without even having to see what is in the とじ込み/提出する. Very useful for 一時的な saving of no end of things, not just databases.

With every 伸び(る): some 苦痛

OpenOffice's database module, "Base" is a very 満足な and 有能な answer for many people's needs. Partly ーするために make it a servant of as many people as possible, a 複雑さ was introduced that we won't 利益 all of us, but which all of us must manage... or shirk.

Base is 有能な of working with (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs, queries, etc, 初めは created by other RDMSs. This will be a 広大な/多数の/重要な boon to some people. Working with it's own (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs, queries, etc, is always going to be more reliable, though.

The 複雑さ we must manage is the system of "登録(する)ing" the database which 普通は takes place at the time the database is created. It's not hard. More a distraction than a difficulty.

I've recently (12/08) been 実験ing with not 登録(する)ing my databases... I've shirked it. So far: No 汚い consequences! But then, I like things simple, tend to do things "by 手渡す". Skip 登録(する)ing, if you like. But remember you've done it, and if something "doesn't work", ask yourself if maybe 登録(する)ing would help. 登録(する)ing may be of greater 利益/興味 to people trying to get ooBase to work with data not held in databases created by ooBase. You probably do need to 登録(する) any database you want to use as the source of labels.

Databases may be 登録(する)d at a later date if you 港/避難所't done it when the database was 最初 created. If you copy a .odb (database) とじ込み/提出する from someplace else, you will need to 登録(する) it before it can be used for labels, etc.

Don't, by the way, be alarmed by the question "Do you want your database 登録(する)d with OpenOffice.org?" The 登録 過程 does not 伴う/関わる going online, it does not tell the providers of OpenOffice about you or your database, and it does not give them 接近 to it.

What "登録(する)ing" does do is to put an 入ること/参加(者) into a data structure 持続するd by the OpenOffice 使用/適用 on your computer. (The data structure is a bit like the 悪名高い Registry run by Windows.... but is not part of it.)

And aside: Remember I told you at the 最高の,を越す of this that it is different from most of the pages in this 始める,決める of tutorials. If you just what to know "How do I do it?", and are growing impatient with this discourse, do try a different tutorial. But what I'm 令状ing here has a point, too... just not a "How to...?" point!

More on the data structure

The data structure is 株d by all of the OpenOffice modules. You don't need to, but if you wish, you can 調査する it 経由で (from the menu) 道具s | 選択s. After you've clicked those menu items, a window covering your 選択s across the whole OpenOffice 控訴 will open, with a tree in the left 手渡す pane. OpenOffice.org Base is the 指名する of a first level subdivision. Click on the + 調印する in 前線 of it to see its sub-分割s. Click on the Databases 支店 to open a 見解(をとる) of all 登録(する)d databases.

A database called "Bibliography" is 任命する/導入するd on your machine when you 任命する/導入する OpenOffice. I'd be inclined to leave that, as it is probably used in さまざまな demonstrations bundled with OpenOffice.

特に if you are a beginner like I was, trying out さまざまな things, the 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of 登録(する)d databases can grow, and it can acquire some strange 入ること/参加(者)s.

The first step に向かって keeping your sanity, throughout your computer work, not just with OpenOffice, is to use folders intelligently. Base 尊敬(する)・点s your use of folders. A separate folder for your databases would be a good idea. You can put it somewhere beneath "My 文書s", or in another place if you prefer. Putting it anywhere under "Program とじ込み/提出するs" is a Bad Idea. That part of your レコード is for the programs that operate on your 文書s and data. Keep your 創造s separate.

Within your "My Databases" folder, you could create a new folder for each database. Then when you are finished with something, you just 削除する the folder. の近くに any とじ込み/提出するs from it that are open first. In fact, ooBase "一括s" all of the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs, folders, queries and 報告(する)/憶測s of any database into a 選び出す/独身 とじ込み/提出する, so you may not need sub folders under the "My Databases" folder. Having a folder for each database can help, though, if you create machine readable 生産(高) from the database, or machine readable 公式文書,認めるs on the database, e.g. a ooWriter 文書 述べるing the fields in the database's (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs.

But! Even if you 削除する a folder, the 入ること/参加(者) in OpenOffice's data structure's 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of 登録(する)d databases remains! You can (and should) 削除する it, using OpenOffice to 接近 it.

You can get into a 状況/情勢 where different 指名するs in OpenOffice's data structure's 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of 登録(する)d databases 言及する to the same database. Probably best 避けるd.

If you thought you'd got rid of, say, FDB003 by (only) 削除するing it's folder, if you try again, and 始める,決める up a "new" FDB003, then OpenOffice's data structure's 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of 登録(する)d databases will (不足などを)補う a 指名する for the database, perhaps "FDB0031".

(By the way: I 一般に 避ける creating folders with 指名するs beginning with "My", e.g. "My Databases". Not only do I find the 指名する twee, but it is also hard to distinguish between those which I've created myself, and those created by the system which may need to be 尊敬(する)・点d. I'm lucky in my 初期のs, "tkb". They don't seem to 刈る up in computer とじ込み/提出する 指名するs, so I can use 指名するs like "Databases- TKBs". 公式文書,認める the "Army speak": Noun first, then adjective. When I sort the contents of a folder by 指名する, I don't want a whole bunch of "TKB... " 入ること/参加(者)s. Also 公式文書,認める that I have to eschew the possessive apostrophe, the 指名する can't be in the 訂正する form, "Databases- TKB's", as the apostrophe isn't 合法的な in a とじ込み/提出する 指名する.

Consequences.. and 支援 Up Your Databases

When you 登録(する) databases, the に引き続いて acquire 複雑化s. Just do things through OpenOffice, and all should be 井戸/弁護士席.

All of the above can be done. Just be careful to do them 正確に, 経由で the 道具s built into OpenOffice. The parts of a database are interconnected, and when you make a change in one place, the ripples from that change must be taken care of.

In 関係 with all of this, I should について言及する (again) that you will not see separate とじ込み/提出するs on your hard レコード for each (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する, form, query and 報告(する)/憶測 in your database. They... and other things... are all "zipped together" into the database's ".ODB" とじ込み/提出する.

If you want to 支援する up, say, a (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する, proceed as follows. It isn't as bad to do as it looks in the blow-by-blow account, which follows すぐに. Don't overlook the "obvious", though: You can also 支援する up the whole database, all of the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs, etc, just by using Windows (not ooBase) to make a copy of the ".ODB" とじ込み/提出する.

That's it! You have a copy of the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する. 類似の things can be done with forms, queries and 報告(する)/憶測s.

The same techniques are useful for creating new (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs, etc, from 存在するing ones. The same sort of copy/ paste, within OpenOffice that I've just 述べるd 供給するs the "Save As" 機械装置.

An aside: This is probably the 位置/汚点/見つけ出す to について言及する what you may need to be told: When you are 現実に working with your database, editing data, as …に反対するd to setting the whole thing up, there is no "Save" in the sense that is normal in most computer 使用/適用s. Each time you leave a 記録,記録的な/記録する, ooBase tries to save that to your hard disk. The "Save" 過程 is almost instantaneous. Only when (and every time!) you try to shut 負かす/撃墜する the database, or a (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する in it, when you have changed what's on your 審査する for a 記録,記録的な/記録する, but not left the 記録,記録的な/記録する, are you asked "Don't you want to save the change you made?"

Lastly, there's one other way to 保護する your data you might want to consider. At one point, I had to say here "But I have to 自白する that I can't tell you how to do it!".

Happily, since then, I have 人物/姿/数字d out how to 支援する up data 経由で an 輸出(する) to .csv. What does that mean?

If you already know what CSV data is, you can skip the 残り/休憩(する) of the page you are reading, and go to my tutorial on how to 輸出(する) to CSV.

If you "輸出(する) a (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する to csv", you are left with a plain text 文書 with all of your data. This isn't a "perfect" backup in several 尊敬(する)・点s... but いつかs it is better than 非,不,無. And, as a plain text 文書, it is pretty 強健な. At worst, you can 簡単に copy it by 手渡す 支援する into a new computer, one that 取って代わるs whatever was lost. 存在 able to get 支援する to where you were before is, after all, the point of a backup!

This sort of backup is called "CSV" from the words Comma Separated Values.

Suppose your database held......

A .csv とじ込み/提出する of that data might or might not 含む the headings. It would be very ありそうもない to 持つ/拘留する (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) about the type of the data in each field. In any simple text editor or wordprocessor it would come up as follows. (Most spreadsheet programs 含む a way to 輸入する .csv data so that each field ends up in a separate column. ooCalc certainly does. There are 関係のある discussions in my ooBase tutorial about moving things from other RDBMSs to ooBase.)

結論するing 発言/述べるs

Don't let OpenOffice's data structure's 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of 登録(する)d databases be a 原因(となる) for 関心. I 疑問 you'll often think about it. It is there in the background, doing what it does, but it doesn't need to "talk" to you.

I hope one day to 追加する a section to this page telling you how to "任命する/導入する" a new database (i.e. collection of (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs, queries, forms, 報告(する)/憶測s) on a machine. I 推定する it is not much more than copying the .odb とじ込み/提出する across to the new machine, and telling the ooBase on that machine where it is.

Remember the types of backups we've discussed:

That's it! I hope. Do feel 解放する/自由な to 接触する me with advice on what questions you have been left with.

I dislike 'fancy' websites with more 関心 for a flashy 外見 than for good content. For a pretty picture, I can go to an art gallery. Of course, an attractive 場所/位置 WITH content deserves 賞賛する... as long as that pretty 直面する doesn't cost download time. In any 事例/患者....
