Updated 28 Apr 2020: I reviewed the "Is Libre Office better than Open Office?" question again. 式のs, now not only would I certainly use Libre Office if I were just starting out, I am now 説 that I would migrate any Open Office work you may be doing to Libre Office. Sorry!

Open Office,April 2020, has a Big Problem: It seems that 利益／興味 in doing the programming work to 持続する it has all but 乾燥した，日照りのd up. The 君主 is dead! Long live the 君主!

I have been talking what is the 権利 choice between OpenOffice and LibreOffice since at least November 2016.

I have been building this 場所／位置 of LibreOffice / OpenOffice help since 2010. Most of it was created with 言及／関連 to OpenOffice. I still (5/2020) use OpenOffice for my "everyday" stuff... but I am finally taking my baby steps in the world of LibreOffice.

(I wasn't ever 利益／興味d in 存在 one of Microsoft's vassals. For years I used Ami プロの／賛成の and Borland's Quattro and Paradox.)

The choice today, it seems to me, is between Open Office and LibreOffice.

And I feel that the time has come to say to you, if you are just getting started: Start with LibreOffice. If you are already using OpenOffice: Start thinking about switching to LibreOffice.

However, the days when my OpenOfffice pages are useful are far from over. What I've written in them 適用するs in the LibreOffice 環境 with little of no adaptation. Please bring any exceptions to my attention?... to spare the next person the 失望／欲求不満 you had? Please 特記する／引用する the URL (www.thingie) of the page where the problem arose. Within 推論する／理由, I am happy to "reward" you with a について言及する of your website, if you 服従させる／提出する something helpful, so please tell me where the credit should go.

LibreOffice and OpenOffice 株 a ありふれた ancestor, and remain 類似の in many ways. (But they will probably diverge, as 開発 continues.)

One little nuisance...

The "覚え書き" data type. 現在の in HSQL. And very useful.

It doesn't seem to be 現在の in Firebird. And the "同等（の）s" seem
fraught with bugs and nuisances.

As I said... I am very new to Firebird. But I think that
a data type 同等（の） to the HSQL "覚え書き" is too
useful to do without... and if you skip to the 底（に届く）
of this sidebar, you will see that you don't have to
do without it... sort of.

"All" I want is to be able to 株 fragments of text in a field.
Mulit-line fragments of text.

What I've done here, in the different font, would go in the
sort of field I "need". (Want.)

I raised the above at ask.libreoffice.org, which seems to be the most active discussion 会議 for Libre Office.

I'm delighted to say I had an answer! And the answer worked! As I said in that discussion, there are some "gotchas" to navigate, but the 同等（の） of a 覚え書き does 存在する... whew!

One of the worst gotchas is that is seems you can't, or at least can't easily, 追加する the 権利 sort of field to an 存在するing （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する. You have to put them in the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する when it is first created. Maybe that's just another bit of newbie ignorance. I hope so! (And that I learn how to do it soon!)

One 推論する／理由 for 存在 a fan of LibreOffice is that I am beginning my move away from Microsoft, finding Windows 10 brings too many things that I don't want to を取り引きする. (On 最高の，を越す of the 問題／発行するs I have had since the 勝利，勝つ 7 system "改良s".) On my Linux machines... admittedly not in much use, yet, at 5/20... I am going with LibreOffice, and 推定する／予想する 徐々に to move there on my other machines, too.

So... whether you are using OpenOffice or LibreOffice, I think you are wise, and hope that my tutorials will be 平等に useful to you.

I really don't know the Linux world 井戸／弁護士席 enough to "advise" you there... but in at least one 事例／患者, the default database in a Linux 配当 is LibreOffice, and I don't feel that I need to fight that. On that system, I will use LibreOffice.

One place the Offices are different...

If you want to use the database module, which is what most of my tutorials are about, you have a choice to make. If you are just starting with LibreOffice / OpenOffice, I hope, for your sake, that you will choose to go with LibreOffice from the start, and within the database, you have a その上の choice to make: Do you ride the "last hurrah" of the "old" database engine, HSQLB, or do you get on board "Firebird"?

The people 責任がある LibreOffice, have been making noises since at least Feb 2017 about leaving HSQLB behind, moving to Firebird. As of 5/2020, LibreOffice 見解／翻訳／版 6.3.6, you have HSQLB and Firebird as 代案／選択肢s... if you know how to "直す／買収する，八百長をする it" thus.

To "switch on" the Firebird 選択

When I did a fresh 任命する／導入する of the LibreOffice 控訴 in 早期に May 2020, I was left with a LibreOffice Base that only 申し込む／申し出d the embedded "HSQLB" for starting new databases in the wizard that you go through as you enter the database.

Switching on the Firebird 選択 is not a big 取引，協定! Just a small tweak. But you have to "know how" to "switch on" the 外見 of the Firebird 選択. The Firebird engine is already 任命する／導入するd, from LibreOffice 見解／翻訳／版 6.3.6.2 (x64) or earlier.

A downside? The one thing I need to 収容する／認める is as follows. (You will get the same 警告 from LibreOffice during the "switch it on" 過程": To switch on the Firebird 選択, you have to switch on all of the 現在の 実験の features in the whole LibreOffice 控訴. If you use an 実験の feature, it may not work 100% as you 推定する／予想するd, or even, perhaps, as it 現実に should.

But if you stick to basics, you shouldn't have any "adventures". And wouldn't you like the 選択 of trying new things? The Nice People developing LibreOffice are not going to put barely 実験（する）d stuff in a 解放（する）d 見解／翻訳／版 of the 製品, are they? Even the "前進するd" / "実験の" things will have had 広範囲にわたる 開発 and 実験（する）ing.

Mis-use of 条件

Don't you hate it when people encourage and 長引かせる ignorance by mis-using 条件? I do. But I also hate teachers trying to tell me too much at once. So I 延期するd discussing the meaning of "database". It's at the 底（に届く） of this page.

... "You're probably just 存在 徹底的な", but have long since decided it all sounds just to fraught and you aren't going to try either Office after all!

Please don't take that 見解（をとる）! Yes! I've been "up 前線" with you about the presence of a few tedious annoyances in the course of setting things up.

But that's all they are! It takes many words to 述べる them, explain them, and explain what you need to do. But, in practice, if you follow the 指導／手引 carefully, setting up should be a 広大な／多数の／重要な hassle. Thousands of people are 現実に entering text into WP 文書s, spreadsheets and databases 権利 now as you read this. Some 政府 departments are run using either OpenOffice or LibreOffice. How could that be, if it were an "impossible mess". Do you want to be a Microsoft serf forever? Or even "just" encourage their hegemony, if you get you use of their 製品s out of your 雇用者's expenses, or the taxpayer? (If the taxpayer, why are you using Microsoft, when there's a FREE 代案／選択肢??)

You CAN 任命する／導入する LibreOffice Base! (You can even 任命する／導入する it と一緒に Open Office, and migrate to the Office with a 未来!)

Returning to "Mis-use of 条件"

I've been way too casual in my use of the word "database" above.

概して speaking, I used it for two different things...

• The "stuff" that I 手配中の，お尋ね者 to 蓄える／店 in the computer
• The ソフトウェア that helps me do the 蓄える／店ing (and editing and getting 報告（する）／憶測s.. and more!)

厳密に speaking, the word "database" should be reserved for the former

There several big classes of ソフトウェア for managing what we have 蓄える／店d. LibreOffice Base is an example of a RDMS... a Relational Database Management System.

Most of that is pretty self evident, but why the "Relational"? We'll come to that. やめる soon. Not today, but soon. For now, just remember that it is part of the 指名する for the type of ソフトウェア we are using to manage the data we've collected.
