Slavery had recently been 廃止するd and Lady Duff often comes across poignant examples of the 悲劇の 遺産/遺物 it had left. In wanting to experience the 十分な culture of the Cape Lady Duff leads the reader through many events that to her middle-class European 注目する,もくろむs were wonders from another world. There is her 観察 of a イスラム教徒 funeral, her 審議する/熟考する socialising with イスラム教徒s (who were wildly held to be 毒(薬)ing the Christians), the visit to the missionary-school. All are seen through her sharp 注目する,もくろむs and social charm. Whilst not a typical travel 調書をとる/予約する (there's little description of the land itself) the 調書をとる/予約する brings to life a bygone time and the people of that age.
--David Price

GENERAL PLAN OF THE WORK (taken from 容積/容量 01)

PART I

Voyages and Travels of 発見 in the middle ages; from the 時代 of Alfred, King of England, in the ninth century to that of Don Henry of Portugal at the 開始/学位授与式 of the fourteenth century

PART II.

General Voyages and Travels 主として of 発見; from the 時代 of Don Henry, in 1412, to that of George III. in 1760.

PART III
Particular Voyages and Travels arranged in systematic order, Geographical and Chronological.

公式文書,認める.--This part will be divided into five 調書をとる/予約するs, comprehending, I. Europe.--II. Asia.--III. Africa.--IV. America.--V. Australia and Polynesia; or the prodigious multitude of islands in the, 広大な/多数の/重要な: 太平洋の Ocean. And all these will be その上の subdivided into particular 一時期/支部s or sections 特派員 to the geographical 手はず/準備 of these several 部分s of the globe.

PART IV.
General Voyages and Travels of 発見 during the 時代 of George III. which were 行為/行うd upon 科学の 原則s, and by which the 地理学 of the globe has been nearly perfected.

PART V.
Historical Deduction of the 進歩 of 航海 発見 and 商業 by sea and land, from the earliest times to the 現在の period.

In the 審議する/熟考する construction of this systematic 計画(する), it has been a 主要な 反対する of anxious consideration, to 減ずる the 広範囲にわたる and 利益/興味ing 構成要素s of which the work is composed under a (疑いを)晴らす, intelligible, and 包括的な 協定, so 連合させるd in a geographical and chronological series, that each 連続する 分割 and subdivision, throughout the whole work, may 準備する the mind of the reader for that which is to follow, and may 補助装置 the memory in the recollection of what has gone before. By these means, an attentive perusal of this work must やむを得ず be of 構成要素 usefulness, in 直す/買収する,八百長をするing 際立った and just ideas of 地理学, history, and chronology in the minds of its readers; besides the important (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) and 合理的な/理性的な amusement which it will afford, by the たびたび(訪れる) description of manners, customs, 法律s, 政府s, and many other circumstances, of all the countries and nations of the world.

In 決定するing upon an 時代 for the 開始/学位授与式 of this work, the Editor was 自然に led, from a consideration of the 偶発の 発見 of アイスランド by the Norwegians in the ninth century, as coincident with the 統治する of the 広大な/多数の/重要な ALFRED, who 上がるd the 王位 of England in 872, to 可決する・採択する that period as the beginning of the series, both because the 開始/学位授与式 of modern 海上の 発見 took place during the 統治する of a British 君主, and because we derive the earliest written accounts of any of these 発見s from the pen of that excellent prince. It is true that the first 偶発の 発見 of アイスランド appears to have been made in 861, eleven years before the 即位 of Alfred to the 王位; yet, as the actual 植民地化 of that island did not take place till the year 878, the seventh of his glorious 統治する, we have been induced to distinguish the actual 開始/学位授与式 of 海上の 発見 by the modern European nations as 同時に起こる/一致するing with his 時代.

From that time, till the year 1412, when Don Henry, Prince of Portugal, first began to 起訴する a 連続した 一連の 海上の 発見s along the western coast of Africa, during which a long inactive period of 551 years had elapsed, the only 海上の 出来事/事件 connected with our 支配する, was the 偶発の re-発見 of the Canary or Fortunate Islands, by a nameless Frenchman, about the year 1330, though they were not 試みる/企てるd to be taken 所有/入手 of till 1400. This long interval, between the 時代s of King Alfred and Don Henry, 構成するs the Part, or grand 分割 of our work, in the course of which, a かなりの number of adventurous travellers 侵入するd into the almost unknown 地域s of Tartary and the East, and かなりの notices of the empire of 中国, and even of Japan, and of the coast and islands of India and north-eastern Africa, were communicated to the Europeans by the Polos and others.

In separating Part IV. from Part II. the General Voyages and Travels of 発見 which have been undertaken during the long and busy 統治する of our 現在の venerable 君主, from those of a 類似の nature which 後継するd the 発見 of the new world, and of the 大勝する by sea to India, the Editor only 支払う/賃金s a just 尊敬の印 to the enlightened spirit of the age, under the munificent and enlightened patronage of the beloved 君主 of a 解放する/自由な and happy people. Those former voyages of Part II. were mostly undertaken from mere 利益/興味d 見解(をとる)s of direct or 推定する/予想するd 商業の 利益; while these of the 時代 of George III. 起こる/始まるd in the grand 原則s of endeavouring to 延長する the bounds of science and human happiness.

Perhaps it may occur to some readers, that PART V. the last in order of the general 長,率いるs of our 計画(する), せねばならない have formed PART I. as partaking of the nature of an introduction to the 支配する, and forming a 要約 of the whole work. Upon even a very slight consideration, however, it must be obvious, that it is impossible
to compose that 提案するd deduction in any 適する manner, until the whole 集まり of selected 構成要素s is 所有するd by the Editor, and definitively arranged. It may likewise be known to many, that introductions and prefaces, though usually placed at the beginning of 調書をとる/予約するs, are uniformly and やむを得ず last composed, and usually last printed, except in new 版s.

A 広大な/多数の/重要な variety of Collections of Voyages and Travels have been published at different periods, many of which are inaccessible from their scarcity, or from 存在 in foreign languages: And such 広大な/多数の/重要な numbers of Voyages and Travels to particular 地域s and countries have been printed, as to be Altogether unattainable by the generality of readers. Every thing, however, which could 与える/捧げる to the perfection of this work has been collected, or will be carefully procured during its 進歩; and no 苦痛s or expense shall be withheld which, can 与える/捧げる to (判決などを)下す it as 完全にする and 包括的な as possible. In the 雇用 of the 広大な variety and extent of excellent 構成要素s, 広大な/多数の/重要な care shall be taken to 挿入する every useful and curious (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状), 減ずるd, where necessary, to modern language; and nothing shall be omitted which is 役立つ to 価値のある (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) and 合理的な/理性的な amusement.

In our approach に向かって the 現在の times, the multitude of particular Voyages and Travels 増加するs prodigiously; and, in 雇うing these, it becomes peculiarly necessary to make a 選択 of the best in every period, and 特に of those best adapted for 伝えるing just ideas of each geographical 分割 and subdivision of the world; while those of いっそう少なく 長所, but which 含む/封じ込める useful notices of the 地域s and countries of which they 扱う/治療する, shall be carefully epitomized in illustration of the different 支配するs. Without the 雇用 of 差別する 選択 and 時折の abridgement, this work must have 延長するd to an inconvenient and その結果 expensive size, or must have been left unfinished and abrupt in some of its parts: But abridgement shall be very seldom 雇うd and never without acknowledgment. Indeed, the grand 反対する of the 現在の work is to bring together a more 完全にする and entire collection of Voyages and Travels, than has hitherto appeared in any language.

From the nature of the 計画(する), it is utterly impossible to ascertain, with any precision, the exact length to which it may 延長する; but, so far as can be 裁判官d of at 現在の, it is not 推定する/予想するd to 越える eighteen or twenty 容積/容量s. Throughout the whole work, a 一連の 地図/計画するs and Charts will be 挿入するd in their proper places, carefully selected and 建設するd for the 目的 of illustrating the さまざまな Voyages and Travels. At the の近くに of the whole, a 完全にする 索引 will be given to the entire 一連の 容積/容量s, so arranged as to form a 正規の/正選手 Gazetteerof the whole world. In every article which has been 可決する・採択するd into this work, the 初めの and 従犯者 sources of all the 構成要素s shall be distinctly 示すd. 公式文書,認めるs of explanation will be given, wherever necessary; and, as many of these are drawn from さまざまな sources, the 指名するs of the authors from whom they are 可決する・採択するd shall always be 定評のある: Such 公式文書,認めるs as are 示すd by the letter E. are by the Editor of the work.

借りがあるing to the 不可欠の nature of this work, it makes no 肯定的な (人命などを)奪う,主張する to the character of an 初めの composition, in the strict acceptation of that 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語; and he, therefore, who has undertaken the care of its collection and 協定, assumes no higher 肩書を与える than that of Editor. In the 発射する/解雇する of that 義務, however, the 労働 which he has やむを得ず bestowed, though always pleasing, has often been かなりの, and いつかs arduous; and he 信用s that the 計画(する) of the work, which is altogether 初めの, will be 設立する 適切な adapted to the end in 見解(をとる), and that the 死刑執行 may appear not 不十分な to the high importance of the 支配する. Without imputation of arrogance, he may be permitted to 主張する, that he has 発揮するd the most unremitting attention and 産業, in the collection,
選択, and 準備 of the several 部分s of the whole work, and in the 協定 and 配当 of its parts. He has the satisfaction to 追加する, that all his 成果/努力s have been seconded with the 最大の 準備完了 and liberality by the Proprietorof the work, who has spared no trouble, and withheld no expense, in procuring and 供給(する)ing the necessary 構成要素s.

It is with much 感謝する satisfaction, that the Editor has to 認める his high 義務s to the Curators and Librarians of the Edinburgh public libraries, belonging to the Faculty of 支持するs, the University, and the Writers to his Majesty's Signet, for the communication of many 価値のある and 不十分な 構成要素s. Nor ought he to 保留する his 尊敬の印 of 感謝, on this occasion, from the 自由主義の spirit of a 私的な individual, the Reverend Henry White of Lichfield, who has most obligingly 申し込む/申し出d the use of his 価値のある Collection of Voyages and Travels, and other curious and 不十分な 作品 connected with the 支配する, for 補助装置ing に向かって the perfection of this 出版(物).

Having thus 簡潔に 発表するd the nature, 計画(する), and 反対する of the 現在の work, of which this first 容積/容量 is now before the public, it only remains to say, that the Editor and Proprietor, each in his particular department, are 解決するd to 発揮する their 最大の endeavours, that nothing may be omitted which can 与える/捧げる to (判決などを)下す the work deserving of public approbation and 広範囲にわたる patronage.

EDITORS PREFACE TO THE SET

"This (a)手の込んだ/(v)詳述する and excellent Collection, which redounds as much to the glory of the English Nation as any 調書をとる/予約する that ever was published, has already had 十分な (民事の)告訴s made in its に代わって against our 苦しむing it to become so 不十分な and obscure, by neglecting to republish it in a fair impression, with proper illustrations and 特に an 索引. But there may still be room left for a favourable construction of such neglect, and the hope that nothing but the casual scarcity of a work so long since out of print may have 妨げるd its 落ちるing into those able 手渡すs that might, by such an 版, have rewarded the 著名な Examples 保存するd therein, the Collector thereof and themselves によれば their 砂漠s."

Thus wrote Oldys (The British Librarian, No III, March, 1737, page 137), nearly 150. years ago, and what has been done to 除去する this, reproach? The work has become so rare that even a 無謀な 支出 of money cannot procure a copy [Footnote: Mr. Quantch, the 著名な Bibliopole, is now asking &続けざまに猛撃する;42 for a copy of the 1598-1600 版.]

It has indeed long been felt that a handy 版 of the celebrated "Collection of the 早期に Voyages, Travels and 発見s of the English Nation," published by Richard Hakluyt 1598, 1599, 1600, was one of the greatest desiderata of all 利益/興味d in History, Travel, or Adventure. The 労働 and cost 伴う/関わるd have however hitherto deterred publishers from 試みる/企てるing to 会合,会う the want except in the 事例/患者 of the very 限られた/立憲的な reprint of 1809-12. [Footnote: Of this 版 250 copies were printed on 王室の paper, and 75 copies on 皇室の paper.] As regards the 労働 伴う/関わるd, the に引き続いて 簡潔な/要約する 要約 of the contents of the Second 版 will give the reader some idea of its extent. I 言及する those who 願望(する) a 完全にする 分析 to Oldys.

容積/容量 I. (1598) 取引,協定s with Voyages to the North and North East, and 含む/封じ込めるs One hundred and nine separate narratives, from Arthur's 探検隊/遠征隊 to Norway in 517 to the celebrated 探検隊/遠征隊 to Cadiz, in the 統治する of good Queen Bess. Amongst the 長,指導者 voyages may be について言及するd: Edgar's voyage 一連の会議、交渉/完成する Britain in 973; an account of the Knights of Jerusalem; Cabot's voyages; (ドイツなどの)首相/(大学の)学長's voyages to Russia; Elizabeth's 大使館s, to Russia, Persia, &c.; the 破壊 of the Armada; &c., &c.

容積/容量 II. (1599) 扱う/治療するs of Voyages to the South and South East, beginning with that of the 皇后 Helena to Jerusalem in 337. The 長,指導者 narratives are those of Edward the Confessor's 大使館 to Constantinople; The History of the English Guard in that City; Richard Coeur de Lion's travels; Anthony Beck's voyage to Tartary in 1330; The English in Algiers and Tunis (1400); Solyman's Conquest of Rhodes; Foxe's narrative of his 捕らわれた; Voyages to India, 中国, Guinea, the Canaries; the account of the Levant Company; and the travels of Raleigh, Frobisher, Grenville, &c. It 含む/封じ込めるs One hundred and sixty-five separate pieces.

容積/容量 III. (1600) has Two hundred and forty-three different narratives, 開始するing with the fabulous 発見 of the West Indies in 1170, by Madoc, Prince of むちの跡s. It 含む/封じ込めるs the voyages of Columbus; of Cabot and his Sons; of Davis, Smith, Frobisher, Drake, Hawkins; the 発見s of Newfoundland, Virginia, Florida, the Antilles, &c.; Raleigh's voyages to Guiana; Drake's 広大な/多数の/重要な Voyage; travels in South America, 中国, Japan, and all countries in the West; an account of the Empire of El Dorado, &c.

The three 容積/容量s of the Second 版 therefore together 含む/封じ込める Five hundred and seventeen separate narratives. When to this we 追加する those narratives 含むd in the First 版, but omitted in the Second, all the voyages printed by Hakluyt or at his suggestion, such as "Divers Voyages touching the Discoverie of America," "The Conquest of Terra Florida," "The Historie of the West Indies," &c., &c., and many of the 出版(物)s of the Hakluyt Society, some idea may be formed of the magnitude of the 請け負うing. I 信用 the 公式文書,認めるs and illustrations I have appended may 証明する useful to students and ordinary readers; I can 保証する any who may be 性質の/したい気がして to cavil at their brevity that many a _line_ has cost me hours of 研究. In 結論, a short account of the previous 版s of Hakluyt's Voyages may be 設立する useful.

The First 版 (London: G. Bishop and R. Newberie) 1589, was in one 容積/容量 folio. It 含む/封じ込めるs, besides the Dedication to Sir Francis Walsingham (see page 3), a preface (see page 9), (米)棚上げする/(英)提議するs and 索引, 825 pages of 事柄. The 地図/計画する referred to in the preface was one which Hakluyt 代用品,人d for the one engraved by Molyneux, which was not ready in time and which was used for the Second 版.

The Second 版 (London, G. Bishop, R. Newberie, and R, Barker), 1598, 1599, 1600, folio, 3 vols. in 2, is the basis of our 現在の 版. The celebrated voyage to Cadiz (pages 607-19 of first 容積/容量) is wanting in many copies. It was 抑えるd by order of Elizabeth, on the 不名誉 of the Earl of Essex. The first 容積/容量 いつかs 耐えるs the date of 1598. Prefixed is an Epistle Dedicatorie, a preface, complimentary 詩(を作る)s, &c. (twelve leaves). It 含む/封じ込めるs 619 pages. 容積/容量 II. has eight leaves of prefatory 事柄, 312 pages for Part I., and 204 pages for Part II. For 容積/容量 III. there are also eight leaves for 肩書を与える, dedication, &c., and 868 pages.

The Third 版 (London, printed by G. Woodfall), 1809-12, 王室の 410, 5 vols., is an excellent reprint of the two 早期に 版s. It is very 不十分な, a poor copy fetching &続けざまに猛撃する;17 to &続けざまに猛撃する;18. Since this 版, there has been no reprint of the Collection.

I have taken upon myself to alter the order of the different voyages. I have grouped together those voyages which relate to the same parts of the globe, instead of 可決する・採択するing the somewhat haphazard 協定 of the 初めの 版. This, and the indices I have 追加するd to each 容積/容量, will, I hope, 大いに 補助装置 the student. The 地図/計画するs, with the exception of the facsimile ones, are modern; on them I have traced the 推定するd course of the 旅行 or 旅行s they 言及する to. The illustrations I have taken from a variety of sources, which are always 示すd.

EDMUND GOLDSMID.
