A 厳しい 干ばつ in New South むちの跡s in 1826-7-8 led to the 発見 of the River Darling. In 1818, an earlier explorer. Oxley, had been 妨げるd by 押し寄せる／沼地s from continuing his 調査する of the Macquarie River. 知事 Darling, thinking that the 長引かせるd 干ばつ might have 乾燥した，日照りのd up the 押し寄せる／沼地s, 任命するd Captain Charles Sturt to 完全にする Oxley's work.

Sturt left Wellington, N.S.W., in December, 1828, and, 訴訟／進行 past the 沼s which Oxley had considered to be the termination of the Macquarie, followed the course of the Bogan River, 乾燥した，日照りの except for 時折の pools, until in February, 1829, he reached a river which he 指名するd the Darling.

On a later 探検隊／遠征隊, Sturt followed the Murrumbidgee River 負かす／撃墜する to its junction with "a 幅の広い and noble river" which he 指名するd the Murray. 現実に it was the same river that the explorers Hume and Hovell had crossed in 1824, and called the Hume. Sturt 調査するd the Murray 負かす／撃墜する to its mouth.
