In March1606 Willem Janszoon, on board the Duyfken, charted about 300 km of the west coast of Cape York 半島 in Queensland. He is the first authenticated discoverer of Australia. From that time many seafarers made 接触する with the Australian coast 含むing Torres, Hartog, Pelsaert, Dampier and Cook.

From the 上陸 of the first (n)艦隊／(a)素早い in 1788, the "new" inhabitants of Australia were desperate to know what lay beyond the mountains which rose about 50 kilometres inland from the coast and which formed a seeminly impenetrable 障壁 to 探検 of the continent. There was a very practical 推論する／理由 for this need to know: their very 生き残り seemed to depend on finding suitable land for grazing and cultivation. Beyond that, however, was the curiosity which has always driven men to 発見.

徐々に the 地図／計画する of the inland of the continent was drawn, first with the 発見, by Blaxland Lawson and Wentworth, of a way across the Blue Mountains, and then by men such as Sturt, Oxley, Eyre, Stuart, Giles, Leichhardt, and Burke and Wills. The 輪郭（を描く） of the continent was mapped by 航海士s 含むing Cook, Flinders, King and Stokes.

At the time of their 発見s there was 広大な／多数の／重要な 利益／興味 in the 偉業／利用するs of these explorers and it was a was a ありふれた practice for them to 準備する a 定期刊行物 of their 探検隊／遠征隊s for 出版（物） in England. Then, for more than a century afterwards, their 偉業／利用するs were taught in schools.

A reassessment has since taken place, where 解決／入植地 is seen as 侵略 and 探検 is seen as expropriation. Of course, these were men of their time and as such behaved in a way which would be 容認できない to us now.
