Henry Lawson Belongs to Us

We belong to him and to his traditions

During the wild, 騒然とした 10年間s of the last century, when the 広大な/多数の/重要な questions were 存在 decided—whether Australian 貿易(する) Unionism was to 生き残る the attacks of 雇用者s and reactionary 政府s, whether an 独立した・無所属 political Labor Party was to be formed, whether the people were to build their 要塞/本拠地s before the 信用s 集まりd for the death-blow—Henry Lawson 奮起させるd the Australian 集まりs with his poetry, wrote for Labor 定期刊行物s, talked with Labor leaders, infiltrated our country with his creed of mateship.

Henry Lawson belongs to the people, not to the money-捕らえる、獲得するs; to the 集まりs, not to the monopolists; to the shearers, not to the 無断占拠者s; to rouseabouts, not to the overseas 投資家; to the spirit of Eureka.

Lawson was the people’s poet, not 単に because he sympathised with the people, but because he supported Unions with them, agitated and organised during the 危機 of the last century.

When Lawson was born in 1867, women were breaking 石/投石するs to earn money to support their families; men were tramping for work; the Benevolent Society was caring for 5880 families; a city night 避難 and a soup kitchen had been opened.  移民/移住 continued and 失業 増加するd.

集まり 会合 of 失業した 需要・要求するd work—their 抗議するs against 餓死するing in city or country were the 重要な cries heard at the birth of a man who was to hear the echo of these cries throughout his life.

So the direction of Lawson’s experience was 始める,決める. まっただ中に all the 誘惑s of fame, and the disillusionment of mistakes, Lawson never 砂漠d the people.

He linked the hardship of the small 農業者 to the sufferings of the city 失業した. He walked this continent. Before one clerk, shearer, 鉄道 労働者 or 鉱夫 had been brought into a Labor League, Lawson had brought them into 容積/容量s of poetry, made them see their まとまり, 圧力(をかける)d them within the covers of his understanding into a 集まり 軍隊. He (種を)蒔くd the seeds of inspiration in the hearts of many of the Labor 開拓するs of 1890.

Against poverty, 不平等, snobbery and 不正, Lawson railed with all the vigor and hopes of the ’nineties.

There is a melancholy 緊張する in Lawson’s work. It comes both from the sadness of the Australian Bush and from his own feeling of 失望/欲求不満 that the people were not 答える/応じるing 速く enough to the 需要・要求するs of the moment. There is a 公式文書,認める of despair mixed with 怒り/怒る as he 記録,記録的な/記録するs the “sallow, sunken 直面するs that are drifting through the street.” There is also 支えるd 忠義—“Yes, I’m too old to ネズミ!”—and a 反抗的な 約束 that the day would 夜明け when the 労働者s would assume their rightful place as the 支配者s of 明言する/公表する and 産業.

It is because his genius was able to fan the embers that 炎d into the undying 解雇する/砲火/射撃 of the Australian Labor Movement. . . . .

Henry Lawson Belongs to us.

Henry Lawson’s Statue

To 手渡す through time, through 未来 years,
    Remembrance 負かす/撃墜する to men,
Who shall in bronze, with 魔法 art,
    Make Lawson live again?
Who does so, must remember him,
    As one who trudged 孤独な ways,
孤独な ways and 乾燥した,日照りの, with 疲れた/うんざりした feet,
    Through hot and dusty days.

Who does so must an image carve,
    Of one who did his best,
His vivid best, to sing and tell,
    The Story of the West,
And something there of pity, too,
    Who carves his image must,
Contrive to hint of 涙/ほころびs for folk
    Cast 負かす/撃墜する and in the dust.

Who carves his statue must 明らかにする/漏らす
    What all Australia knows,
And all Australia あられ/賞賛するs him for,
    That, in his song and prose,
For love of 肉親,親類d he did his best,
    For 司法(官) ever stood,
And dipped his pen into his heart
    To 令状 of Brothergood.

           Roderic Quinn

* * * * *

I wonder would the apathy of 豊富な men 耐える
Were all their windows level with the 直面するs of the poor?
Ah! Mammon’s slaves, your 膝s shall knock, your hearts in terror (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域,
When God 需要・要求するs a 推論する/理由 for the 悲しみs of the street;
The wrong things and the bad things
And the sad things that we 会合,会う
In the filthy 小道/航路 and alley, and the cruel, heartless street.

* * * * *

But the 悪口を言う/悪態 of class distinction from our shoulders shall be 投げつけるd
An’ the sense of Human Kinship revolutionise the world

Then we all will 会合,会う amidships on this stout old earthly (手先の)技術,
An’ there won’t be any 摩擦 ’twixt the classes fore-’n aft.
We’ll be brothers, fore-’n aft!
Yes, an’ sisters, fore-’n aft!
When the people work together, and there ain’t no fore-’n aft.

           Henry Lawson
