“KINK” MARTIN’S 長期冒険旅行 is neither epical nor of 記録，記録的な／記録する, yet the snatches I had gleaned at （軍の）野営地，陣営-解雇する／砲火／射撃 and 一連の会議、交渉／完成する-up 利益／興味d me demoralizingly. Now, after two years, I （機の）カム upon him again, （人が）群がるing the 辛勝する／優位 of the frontier, 開拓する by habit, 著作権侵害者 by instinct; lax of morals, lusty of heart.

I had walked the eight miles from （軍の）野営地，陣営, hoping, yet 疑問ing, that this Diogenes ツバメ, Paragon, was my old pal of the vagabond days. It was so, but I 示すd a 広大な／多数の／重要な change in the man. Reminiscence is dear to my heart, however, and I spoke of the past.

“Say, do you remember that salted 地雷 in Sonora, that time we took—”

He interrupted me あわてて, 紅潮／摘発するing a painful red, and 転換ing uneasy ちらりと見ることs at the Jap cook.

“Come on outside in the sun,” he said awkwardly; “I can talk better in the open,” and I followed, marveling, to a seat where below us stretched the gravelly creek-bed, ripped and furrowed by the sluices. There floated to us softly the 急ぐ of waters, the 動揺させる of 選ぶ and shovel, and the bountiful language of men in a tail-race.

“Say, don’t について言及する them old days in company,” he began. “You know I’m respectable now.” He paused, and I knew that within him was the telling of a strange tale —除去するd, perhaps, from the paths of propriety, but true, and as I listened it grew upon me that morals are おもに a 事柄 of latitude and longitude, anyway.

“There wasn’t any 支援する there, either: that was the trouble. You see, me and a man misdignified by the 呼称 of Percival Pillie 発展させるd something unique in the way of procuring the ‘panga,’”

“What?”

“‘Mazuma,’ money. This here Pillie don’t 行為／法令／行動する like he sounds—not 大部分は. He’s been (v)提携させる(n)支部，加入者d with colleges, horse-racin’ and 特許-薬／医学 shows till he’s infested and 侵略（する）／超過（する） with poetry, politeness and peculiar 方式s of gettin’ the goods. He’s 部隊d to the idea that the Pillie family lost all the money in the world and folks are forcin’ it 支援する on him as legatee. His gray 低俗雑誌 ain’t never curdled on him yet, and he realized about this date that ネズミs afforded a virgin field of 利益（をあげる）, unsullied by the touch of 商業; hence the Pillie 特許 ネズミ Eradicator.

“It 構成するd a piece of atmosphere surrounded by wire in such 割合s that once havin’ blindfolded and 支援するd a ネズミ into it he’d stay there; さもなければ, its ingenuities wasn’t much. We made up a wagon 負担 of ’em, also a zinc 戦車／タンク that fitted the bed of my covered wagon, and 攻撃する，衝突する the 追跡する out into the ruralities—at least, I did. Pillie was a week ahead sellin’ cologne, lightnin’ 棒s, and Happy Hints to the Housewife, in calf, five 容積／容量s, includin’ one ladies’ solid chased gold watch—that is, the watches was solid, clean through, and Pillie was chased やめる たびたび（訪れる）.

“Here was our Moody-operandus: Pill traveled on schedule. At a foreordained 位置／汚点／見つけ出す our 大勝するs intersected, so ’一区切り／（ボクシングなどの）試合 dark I’d 運動 up in my prairie schooner to the farmhouse where he stabled his 見本-事例／患者, and （軍の）野営地，陣営 in the road out 前線. After supper Percy and the 農業者 would wander 前へ／外へ and into conversations with me, during which 討論会 Pillie would make sarcastic allusions at my ネズミ-罠（にかける）s.

“I would （人命などを）奪う，主張する it was an 発明 that seduced sick ネズミs out of bed and into 捕らわれた; no 事柄 what strength of character they had my 罠（にかける） would go out an’ get ’em. Such 声明s connived to 悪化させる 激烈な／緊急の incredulities in Pillie, 複雑にするd with 論争, and 感染性の to the hay-digger.

“I’d 申し込む／申し出 demonstration, also the laying on of wagers; the 農業者 would （人命などを）奪う，主張する a foul, because he’d never seen a ネズミ on the ranch, and didn’t like me to get the worst of a bet. I’d 明言する／公表する that absence made the 罠（にかける） work stronger, and if there wasn’t any ネズミs on 手渡す it would 産む／飼育する ’em. I 保証するd ’em, however, that ネズミs was omnipresent, like mortgages.

“We’d place some 罠（にかける）s in the barn and go to sleep, with the money in the old man’s 手渡すs.

“It was a nickel-plated 計画／陰謀, all 権利 — all I kicked on was havin’ my 残り／休憩（する） broke by gettin’ up at midnight to fill the 罠（にかける）s with nice live ネズミs out of the zinc 戦車／タンク in the wagon.

“We had no trouble sellin’ all the eradicators we cared about on a small 利ざや—say five hundred パーセント.; but that was too measly slow, so we put the 特許 on the market.

“Pillie would conspire with the 農業者 to take advantage of my ignorance and “職業” me out of the 特許; they’d go in on halves. 特許s brought from two hundred up, accordin’ to Pillie’s ideas of what the man had —we let her go once for twenty dollars, as a 示す of affection for a friend. We didn’t care much what we got as long as we sold enough of ’em; there was 特許s for everybody.

“Other drawbacks was the long 運動s after a 取引，協定, and our 無（不）能 to work the same 領土 twice. We did good, 合法的 商売／仕事, though, gettin’ ahead slowly, till we sold a man whose brother, 支援する at Fort Scott, had bought the 特許 a month before.

“It transpired that Pillie’s 特許 ネズミ Eradicator had a patentee in seventeen 隣接するing 郡s, and so, as I 明言する／公表するd, I （機の）カム West. The ネズミ odor stuck to me, however. I was 批准するd so 徹底的な I 設立する it advisable to keep moving.

“One day I 認めるd the 郡保安官 of Fort Scott on the street, and as there was only one steamer leaving ’Frisco that afternoon I happened into Alaska. I’d have preferred Honolulu. There’s 奮起させるing 開始s for high-class Christian 汚職，収賄 の中で the Kanakas,”

Kink’s 注目する，もくろむs gleamed with the 解雇する／砲火／射撃 of rhapsody.

He bore on his person the unmistakable 示すs of 繁栄. They showed in the neatness of his open-necked flannel shirt and the splendor of his wide, wide Stetson, He 陳列する，発揮するd no wealth of fringed “chaps” and ornate 刺激（する）s, as of old, for in the mud country hip-boots are ubiquitous; but his thighs were brown in corduroy, unfailing symptom of success.

“You look like a 勝利者,” I 発言／述べるd,

“Ain’t you heard about me? No? 井戸／弁護士席, say, I’m a Swede for luck. It was this way: You know, 密航者s ain’t 一般に overburdened with 財政上の 資源, and when I was 麻薬 out of the 持つ／拘留する of that ship they put me to work as cabin-boy, makin’ beds, Lord! me, thirty-five years young, jugglin’ sheets, when all I know along them lines is beddin’ 負かす／撃墜する horses and the ‘cowboy tuck.’ Ever try the ‘cowboy tuck’? You and your bunky lay flat on your 支援するs; when you count three you 解除する your 脚s up high and lower ’em together, so the 一面に覆う／毛布 倍のs underneath your feet.

“‘Madam,’ says I one day, speakin’ through the 環境s of a nude feather pillow I had between my teeth, ‘I’m only a workin’ girl, but in spite of the difference in our 駅／配置するs I want to say that if you’re in trouble and need a friend just 押し進める that button once and you’ll have two hundred-負わせる of gristle and cow-puncher at your service. Don’t （犯罪の）一味 twice; that means ice water.’

‘‘Say! she broke 負かす／撃墜する and told me a pitiful story, how she’d put all her money in a minin’ 計画／陰謀 of one Abramski. The どろぼう （人命などを）奪う，主張するd he had a lot of rich ground at Nome and had 組織するd The 約束d Land Placer and Prospecting Company, gettin’ her in on the ground 床に打ち倒す, or through the 地階 window. At the last minute she decided to come along on her own account for 恐れる she’d be buncoed, and she’d just begun to see 指示，表示する物s that her aspirations was goin’ to be realized. I’d have 巡査d her 投資 myself, because I was sure Abramski hadn’t ever been as の近くに to Alaska as he was at that minute.

“I was sure of it, too, when we landed, but I helped her pitch her テント and get settled. Then I took a pasear out into the hills prospecting, I was gone a week, and when I got 支援する I was handicapped with two dollars in 通貨 and the 肉親，親類d of an appetite you remember as a boy: one that makes 厚かましさ／高級将校連 filings taste like a breakfast food. I 調査／捜査するd the odors emanatin’ from the North 星／主役にする restaurant till I decided to get rid of all this money, so as to start fresh and unhampered. “As I was diminishin’ my last 明白な means of support, under a 圧力 of about three 続けざまに猛撃するs to the square mouthful, two Swedes come into the next box and ordered supper. From their talk I knew there was something big in the 空気／公表する. One of them was too excited to pronunciate; just gummed his language up and snowballed his partner with it.

“I gathered that they’d been out prospecting and struck it rich, on 位置を示すd ground. They’d looked up the 記録，記録的な／記録するs, and 設立する the （人命などを）奪う，主張する belonged to a Riley Murtagh, so now they were scourin’ the （軍の）野営地，陣営 to 手渡す him a mess of potash for his birthright, if you choose to look at it scripturally. Neither one knew him by sight.

O. B. I stepped out and accosts the cashier. He was a little Irishman with pugnacities 入会させるd amongst his facial habiliments:

“‘Those Laplanders in the next box have been castin’ aspersions at me, not knowing I could hear,’ says I. ‘In the 利益／興味 of Ireland and the Marquis of Queensberry 支配するs would you mind introducin’ me when they come out? My 指名する is Riley Murtagh.’

“‘Sure not,’ says he. ‘Tis a graand 指名する. You take your choice, leavin’ me the little one.’ He began appropriatin’ 軍需品s of war in the nature of cups and crockery. ‘Put some in your pockets,’ says he; ‘they’ll come handy.’

“When they appeared he 発言／述べるs, 十分な of insultments:

“Hey, Riley Murtagh, it’s the 罰金 職業 for an Irishman I have, takin’ money away from Swedes.’

“‘Is your 指名する Murtagh?’ says one of ’em in the disembowled dialects of Sweden.

“‘It is,’ says the cashier; ‘Riley Murtagh, me old friend.’

“‘Then come with us,’ and out we went, leavin’ my sponsor 重荷（を負わせる）d with 胆汁 and ballasted with dishes.

“After かなりの elocution on 天候 and prospects one of ’em says:

“‘Have you got any 採掘 （人命などを）奪う，主張するs?’

“‘Sure! lots of ’em.’

“‘Where ’一区切り／（ボクシングなどの）試合s?’

“I 指名するd over several creeks.

“‘Got anything on Glacier Creek you’d like to sell?’

“‘Aha,’ thinks I; ‘it’s on Glacier, eh?’

“‘Yes, I’ll sell.’

“‘How much do you want?’

“‘Hundred.’ says I.

“I thought he’d 涙／ほころび his pants gettin’ the money. After he’d counted out ten banknotes I says:

“‘Where’s the balance: the other ninety-nine thousand one hundred?’

“‘What d’ you mean?’ They got excited, and their language began to sour on ’em again like clabber.

“‘Why, a hundred thousand dollars, of course,’ I says.

“They went up in the 空気／公表する so that I had to stand on a 議長，司会を務める and hook ’em 負かす／撃墜する with the poker.

“‘See here, gents,’ says I, ‘you can’t flim-flam Riley Murtagh. I was in the next box to you in the restaurant to-night, and heard all you said. Now, give me the 十分な particulars and maybe I’ll let you have a “lay” on the （人命などを）奪う，主張する.’

“They were pretty decent when they saw it was all off, and took me into a 支援する room. I （機の）カム out of there a half-hour later, my 膝s weak as the 倍の in a napkin, and my 視覚のs protrudin’ like the Aunt-Annie’s of a crab. It was big—so big it 脅すd me and made me sick, sick at the 位置／汚点／見つけ出す I’d squandered the two dollars on.

“I wabbled 負かす／撃墜する street and （人命などを）奪う，主張するd 聖域 in Joe 助祭’s place, leanin’ agin’ the 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業 pale and disfiggered.

“‘Joe,’ says I, ‘do you know a Riley Murtagh?’

“‘Sure! that’s him now,’ indicatin’ the 掃海艇, who was wettin’ 負かす／撃墜する the sawdust an the 床に打ち倒す.

“‘Mr. Murtagh,’ says I. ‘I see a 場所 notice of yours up on Glacier Creek the other day. I’m a tenderfoot lookin’ for a place to prospect, What’ll you take for your （人命などを）奪う，主張する?’

“‘Thousan’ dollars.’

“‘You must be 負傷させるd to the 長，率いる.’ says I. ‘I’ll give you five hundred.’

“‘Take you! Cash 取引，協定, of course?’

“‘Why, cert.,’ says I, fingerin’ a 厚かましさ／高級将校連 重要な, all I had in the world. ‘支払う／賃金 you this evenin’. Just give me an 選択 till dark.’

“‘Op—nothin’.’ says he; ‘money don’t talk with me—it shouts. This sellin’ （人命などを）奪う，主張するs on conversation money don’t tickle my funnybone. If nobody else takes her first she’s yours.’

“Realizin’ the 状況／情勢 申し込む／申し出d 適切な時期s for reflection, I took a walk. First thing I knew I’d landed at the little lady’s テント. She was 十分な of homesickness and joy at seein’ me.

“‘I’m going to fail,’ she says, her lip trembling, and little 暴風雨s comin’ into her 見通し. ‘Mr. Abramski laughs at me. He says he’s forgotten what he did with his 地雷; thinks he must have misplaced them—now he’s going to buy a town lot and build a drygoods 蓄える／店. I’ll never get my money 支援する. I know it.’ She had 冷淡な feet 権利.

“‘Don’t worry; I’ll take you in partners with me,’ says I. ‘You’re in on all I’ve got little pal.’ If she’d a’ called me I’d been 軍隊d to give her half my 着せる／賦与するs. ‘I’m goin’ to の近くに a big 取引，協定 to-night,’ says I, 肉親，親類d of sang fraudulently, and before leavin’ I’d hot-空気／公表するd her spirits up かなりの.

“‘Joe, have you got a town lot?’

“‘Sure! the one next door.’

‘“Let me borrow it this afternoon, will you? There’s a Jew up street with a roll that 苦痛s him like a bad tooth. I won’t 傷つける the lot.’

“‘Go to it.’ says he with 活気／アニメーションs. ‘Bury him 深い enough so I won’t be bothered, that’s all.’

“井戸／弁護士席. Abramski didn’t remember me, and I had no difficulty sellin’ him the lot, also three thousand feet of Oregon Pine, for six hundred cash. We 診察するd the 記録，記録的な／記録するs to see everything was straight. It was—‘Lot thirteen, 封鎖する C, 前線 Street, Joseph O Donnell 助祭, locator’—my 指名する.

“I paid Murtagh at three o’clock, with a hundred to the good.

“I’m off for our 地雷, partner. You’ll find two twenties and a ten under the door — your 株 of the first cleanup.’

“Have you ever made a strike, kid? It’s a wonderful sensation, dreamy and Edmond Danteslike. I’d been so wrapped up in financiering the 企業 I hadn’t rightly 許すd my 現実化s to soak in, but as I got の近くに to the （人命などを）奪う，主張する my courage oozed out of me. I had to button my suspenders to my spirits to keep ’em up; I was the 激しい-Hearted Kid.

“Says I, ‘By diggin’ two feet more off of one end it’ll be big enough to bury ’em both. If I ain’t a successful 鉱夫 I’m a terrible bit as a 墓／厳粛／彫る／重大な-digger.’ and I 開始するd the 明白な 指示，表示する物s of a 二塁打 Swede funeral.

“I was pickin’ away の近くに to the bed-激しく揺する when something gleamed in the dirt. It’s a sensation you don’t get but once in a lifetime, and I knew I was a rich man before I had grabbed the dirt up. The colors lay in the clay like currants in a pudding. After I’d jabbed the 選ぶ in my foot to see I wasn’t somnambalatin’ I stood shoulder 深い in that 穴を開ける and swore, while the sweat dreened off of me in little freshets.

It was a shiny little popgun he’d borrowed, and bein’ a hammerless it didn’t discommode his epiglottis like a real gun would when I rammed it 負かす／撃墜する his throat.

“I pinned him agin’ a door, mellering up his Adam’s apple, and 挿入するd my 膝 amongst his dyspepsia 肉親，親類d of casual. At the same time I explained I was 行方不明になる 塀で囲むing’s 弁護士／代理人／検事 in fact and fiction, and had took a change of 発生地 with her 投資s, liquidatin’ her 在庫／株 in The 約束d Land Placer and Prospecting Company, investin’ it for a half 利益／興味 in The Honest Injun （法廷の）裁判 （人命などを）奪う，主張する instead. I said that if he 手配中の，お尋ね者 to make trouble I’d get her 許可 to nail his hide up on the 塀で囲む and let the sun 乾燥した，日照りの it. Strange how domesticated he got; 予定 in part, perhaps, to a diet of Smith and Wesson.

“That’s how the play （機の）カム up,” said Kink, “The Honest Injun, as you see, is workin’ night and day, a livin’ example of 長所d success and the 使用／適用 of modern methods.” He 示すd the 列／漕ぐ／騒動s of laboring men beneath us.

As he 中止するd speaking he 協議するd a 抱擁する silver watch.

“I’m goin’ to 会合，会う the little lady in town at three o’clock; then we’re goin’ to select a diamond the size of a mud-海がめ. If you’re here Saturday I’d like you to stand up with me and give me away. First time I was ever married, and I get took with gooseflesh horrible every time I think of it.”

I squeezed his brown 手渡す, and he 追加するd with a 緊張する of 苦悩;

“You needn’t mind tellin’ her the biography of this 取引，協定, nor anything about the old days on the 範囲. She’s from Boston, you know—支援する where my mother come from — and she thinks I’m decent. Somehow I feel different about ネズミ-trapping the American 農業者 and such things now. I ain’t proud of myself, and if she ever 設立する it out—” His big 直面する 燃やすd redly under its tan.

“She’s romantic, too; she’s changed the 指名する of The Honest Injun to The White Knight in my 栄誉（を受ける）. Do you s’提起する／ポーズをとる anybody could have told her about my old habit of turning night into daytime? She’s got a 調印する nailed over the bunk-house yonder, too, with this motto: Sans père and sans reproche, which I gather means without father or mother—you see, we’re both 孤児s.”
