Victoria's Unspoiled Alpine Kingdom

Though Victoria has mountain scenery equal to any in the world, it is only in 最近の years that it has been fully 高く評価する/(相場などが)上がるd and developed. Every 肉親,親類d of scenery is scattered throughout the many mountain 範囲s—in them is repeated the rugged grandeur of the Scottish hill country, the 巨大な vistas of the アルプス山脈, and the snow-capped 頂点(に達する)s of Switzerland.

Most of these 訴える手段/行楽地s can be reached by train. Others are within 平易な travelling distance of a 鉄道, and to these 正規の/正選手 car services are 持続するd throughout the tourist season.

For all, the mountains are splendid. For those 捜し出すing a change from the sea-味方する holiday, they are ideal.

The famous Buffalo Chalet (4,400 feet above sea level) is built 事実上 on the 辛勝する/優位 of the Buffalo Gorge, over which the waters of the 水晶 Brook leap in a sheer 減少(する) of 750 feet. The Gorge is one of the most awe-奮起させるing sights one could imagine—only five minutes' walk from the 慰安 and conveniences of the most up-to-date guest house in Australia.

1—Mountain もやs lend an 空気/公表する of enchantment to the Chalet at 開始する Buffalo. 2—A 罰金 (n)艦隊/(a)素早い of cars with 専門家 drivers is 持続するd for the conveyance of 訪問者s from the 鉄道 to the 高原. 3—Morning 日光 on the Chalet gives it an 課すing 外見. 4—The spacious Chalet verandah is the 正規の/正選手 rendezvous for guests each morning before setting out on the excursions for the day. 5—There are some delightful walks which are 高めるd by the beauty of the snow. 6—A モーター snow-骨折って進む keeps the mountain road open 権利 through the winter. 7—モーターs of all descriptions make the trip to the Chalet. 8—Cosy bungalows の近くに by the Chalet are 利用できる for special parties or for families.

MT. BUFFALO NATIONAL PARK

The 開始する Buffalo 国家の Park is a little more than 200 miles by rail north-eastward from Melbourne, and is reached from either Porepunkah or 有望な by road. The 鉄道 Department, which operates the commodious Chalet on 開始する Buffalo, runs a 正規の/正選手 モーター service between the 鉄道 and the 首脳会議 of the 開始する. Comfortable cars are used, and 手はず/準備 can be made for 移転 direct from the train to the Chalet.

開始する Buffalo 国家の Park is the finest mountain 訴える手段/行楽地 in Australia. It has an 高度 of 5645 feet, and 申し込む/申し出s a 多様制 of magnificent mountain scenery, 含むing gorges, waterfalls, colossal granite 集まりs, fern gullies, and lakes and streams teeming with trout. At all seasons it is a wonderful holiday playground. Its winter snow and ice sports are thrilling. The wildflowers in spring and summer are exquisite.

Accommodation is 供給するd at the 完全に modern Chalet, controlled by the Victorian 鉄道 Department, away up thousands of feet on the 高原, and in の近くに proximity to the 長,率いる of the famous Buffalo Gorge.

There is hardly a road in Australia more picturesque than that connecting the 鉄道 and main road in the valley with the 高原. Every yard is an inspiration, and almost the whole 井戸/弁護士席-graded, sinuous 20 miles from 有望な through Porepunkah to the 高原, is a realm of scenic wonder.

The road crosses the Eurobin Creek at a point a short distance below the Eurobin and Ladies' Bath 落ちるs.

The Eurobin Fails, reached by an 平易な walk beside a mountain stream, are formed by the water which flows from the 高原 through a 深い glen.

On the course of the 落ちるs Creek, as the stream flowing from the foot of the Buffalo Gorge is called, occurs the beautiful spectacle known as the Ladies' Bath Fails. These are about 40 feet 深い, the water dropping into a rocky 水盤/入り江, several hundred yards from the Eurobin 落ちるs.

Skirting the eastern bank of the Eurobin Creek, the road rises 徐々に. About a mile and a half beyond Buffalo 落ちるs House a magnificent 見解(をとる) of the 1700 feet "減少(する)" and the Buffalo 落ちるs is 得るd.

About seven miles from its start the road comes on to a (疑いを)晴らす 位置/汚点/見つけ出す called Mackey's 警戒/見張り (指名するd after a former 大臣 for Lands). From this point a wonderful panoramic 見解(をとる) is 得るd.

There is a sharp turn from here, and the way leads through granite country, past Staker's 警戒/見張り (指名するd after a tourist 開拓する of the mountain), then over the crest, and the 高原 is reached. A small plain is 横断するd, a 橋(渡しをする) spanning the aptly 指名するd 水晶 Brook is crossed, and suddenly around a 広範囲にわたる turn the Chalet comes into 見解(をとる).

One of the finest 見解(をとる)s at 開始する Buffalo is that from Bent's 警戒/見張り (4,400 feet) 近づく the 前線 of the Chalet. すぐに below are the cultivated fields in the Buckland Valley. In the 薄暗い distance are the glistening snow-capped 頂点(に達する)s of the Australian アルプス山脈, 含むing 開始する Kosciusko, (7,328 feet) the highest 頂点(に達する) in Australia.

MT. BUFFALO NATIONAL PARK—IN SEASON AT ALL SEASONS

Spring—Summer—Autumn

開始する Buffalo 国家の Park has been aptly 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語d "The Garden of the Gods." At every turn there are 見解(をとる)s to give 楽しみ to the 注目する,もくろむ. The beautiful walks are an unending delight, whether undertaken in winter or summer.

Everywhere there is the music of 水晶-(疑いを)晴らす streams and of noisy waterfalls. Even when the 空気/公表する is 静める on these exalted 高度s, the faint murmur of the 勝利,勝つd in the forests beneath 強めるs the sense of splendid 孤立/分離 that is one of Buffalo's strongest attractions.

Mt. Buffalo is an all-the-year-一連の会議、交渉/完成する 訴える手段/行楽地. Although it earned its 評判 as a winter 訴える手段/行楽地, its beauties are by no means 限定するd to that season of the year. On the hottest day in summer the 気温 is seldom above 75 degrees. Spring is wonderful—the wildflowers bloom in splendid profusion; in fact, summer is a continuous springtime, with its 冷静な/正味の atmosphere and 穏やかな 日光. Autumn, with its pure revitalising mountain 微風s, shows another 段階 of Buffalo where one breathes 空気/公表する of シャンペン酒, and after sleeping 平和的に, rises invigorated to welcome holiday 演習.

Within two minutes' walk of the 前線 of the Chalet, on the flat surface of an enormous granite 玉石, is Bent's 警戒/見張り (高度 4400 feet). 安全に here from a railed enclosure is overlooked the stupendous chasm of the Buffalo Gorge.

罰金 Panorama of Mountains

Eighty-five miles distant is the faint 輪郭(を描く) of 開始する Kosciusko (高度 7328 feet)—the highest 頂点(に達する) in Australia. In the middle distance stands 開始する Bogong (6509 feet), and to the 権利 開始するs Fainter (6160 feet) Feathertop (6306 feet), and Hotham (6100 feet).

すぐに below are the Eurobin 落ちるs and the winding ruddy 略章 of the road in the Buckland Valley.

The Gorge の近くに by consists of two stupendous cliffs of solid granite, 変化させるing in depth from 1200 to 1700 feet, over which 雷鳴 in a sheer leap of 1700 feet the waters of the famous Buffalo 落ちるs.

Lake Catani (指名するd after a former Engineer for Public 作品, who thought out and 監督するd the 計画/陰謀) is an attractive 60-acre sheet of water. It is surrounded by low hills, with trees 権利 to the water's 辛勝する/優位.

In the seasons, boating, bathing, trout fishing or skating are 熱望して enjoyed. The trout fishing is splendid.

最高の Winter 訴える手段/行楽地

開始する Buffalo 国家の Park has no 競争相手 in Australia as a winter 訴える手段/行楽地. All snow sports may be indulged in there under 条件s equal to the best 訴える手段/行楽地s on the Continent.

In winter the lake is frozen to a depth of eight インチs, and skating is most popular.

Toboganning and ski-running give endless frolicsome sport during the snow season. 隣接するing the lake are two excellent toboggan runs.

Anything more picturesque than the lake with its moving group of スケートをする人s and 急ぐing toboggans it would be hard to imagine.

Overlooking the lake on a high point is the Monolith—a 抱擁する granite 玉石, 30 feet high, and balanced on the 辛勝する/優位 of a mighty rocky outcrop. A stairway gives 接近 to its lofty rail-保護するd 首脳会議.

The Horn—The Highest 頂点(に達する)

Seven miles distant in a south-westerly direction is The Horn (高度 5645 feet). It is the highest 頂点(に達する) on the 高原, and is the 客観的な of one of the finest trips which may be made during a stay on the mountain because of the unforgettable 見解(をとる)s. The last mile to the 警戒/見張り is a real 登山 adventure, with good, but 完全に 安全な, climbing. Tourists make the trip to The Horn a day's 遠出, but they may stay the night there in a 特に 供給するd and 都合よく furnished cottage.

The Leviathan 激しく揺する, on the way to The Horn, is believed to be the largest 選び出す/独身 石/投石する in Australia, and is 概算の to 含む/封じ込める 30,000 トンs of granite. It is 75 feet high, 150 feet long, and 60 feet 幅の広い, and 残り/休憩(する)s on a base of about six feet.

These are but a few of the places to be seen by 訪問者s making a week's stay. There are many other points of 利益/興味 for those who can stay longer. There are wonderful fern glades, cascades and forests—in short, charm and wonder are everywhere.

For the nights the social life at the Chalet is 十分な of throbbing 楽しみ. There is something for every 訪問者—snug lounges, music, dancing in a spacious ball-room, and all modern 慰安. 静かな 楽しみ or rollicking gaiety 供給するs irresistible 控訴,上告 for everyone.

The Chalet has all the conveniences of a city hotel, and is 完全にする with hot and 冷淡な water services, ample bathrooms, electric light, billiard rooms, 乾燥した,日照りのing rooms, and efficient sewerage. It can 融通する 201 people.

(See 計画(する) of Mt. Buffalo 高原, at the end of this 小冊子.)

It is a majestic sight looking 上向き across the waving tree 最高の,を越すs to the scar on the 直面する of the Buffalo Gorge. This scar is really the waters of the 水晶 Brook 宙返り/暴落するing from the 高原 to the depths of the Gorge. 非常に高い cliffs on either 味方する give that impression of grandeur which can be seen only at 開始する Buffalo.

MYRTLEFORD DISTRICT OFFERS GOOD FISHING

Myrtleford is a small 郡区 on the Myrtle Creek の近くに to its junction with the Ovens River, 177 miles from Melbourne, on the Wangaratta-有望な 支店 鉄道 line. Good cod and perch fishing is to be had in the Buffalo River, and trout are taken in the Nug Nug, Sandy, and Happy Valley Creeks.

の中で the waterfalls are those on the Nug Nug Creek. The water in the Lily 落ちるs on the Buffalo Creek has a 減少(する) of 200 feet. The Twin 落ちるs are a mile その上の up the same stream.

Although seldom availed of, this may be made the starting point for the trip to the Buffalo 高原. The 大勝する lies 西方の to the Buffalo River. A rough 跡をつける leaving the Buffalo River road leads along the 山の尾根 of a 刺激(する) of the 範囲 and gives 接近 to the 首脳会議 of the 高原 at a point between 開始する Dunne and Pulpit 激しく揺する, the "支援する door of the mountain."

Porepunkah and 有望な, four miles apart, have assumed importance as the points from which the Buffalo 高原 can best be reached. In and around each there is plenty to 利益/興味 the 訪問者. Porepunkah is the nearest 鉄道 point to the mountain.

Porepunkah, 192 miles from Melbourne, is one of the 終点 駅/配置するs for tourists going to 開始する Buffalo. It is the centre of a rich valley 地区. The Ovens River flows nearby.

開始する Cobbler (5347 feet) and 開始する Howitt (5715 feet) are each about 25 miles distant, and, with the shorter trip to 開始する Buller, form 客観的なs for 登山 excursions. These mountains are snow-covered in winter, and are 速く becoming very popular with 充てるs of snow sports, such as skiing.

It is from Mansfield that many of the more venturesome start on excursions through the little-known mountain fastnesses of eastern Victoria. The climb to 開始する Howitt is 十分な of excitement. The 跡をつける curves 一連の会議、交渉/完成する 法外な ravines, and crosses and re-crosses the river as it 勝利,勝つd まっただ中に the mighty 頂点(に達する)s.

In places the ledge on the cliff is just wide enough for a horse to pass; on one 味方する 大規模な 塀で囲むs of granite tower above, on the other there is a sheer 減少(する) of hundreds of feet to the valley below. As the 長,率いる of the stream is 近づくd the country grows wilder.

When the crest of 開始する Howitt is reached, the 見解(をとる) is unforgettable. Instead of the accustomed 山の尾根s or conical 頂点(に達する) of the ordinary mountain, a large plain is 明らかにする/漏らすd, covered with snowgrass and dotted with cattle.

BRIGHT TO OME0—ACROSS THE AUSTRALIAN ALPS

What is (人命などを)奪う,主張するd to be the highest coach road in Australia 延長するs for 97 miles in north-eastern Victoria through some of the most picturesque and impressive mountain scenery in the 明言する/公表する. It is, unfortunately, not passable in the winter, because, on account of its 広大な/多数の/重要な 高度, it is then snow-covered. It 供給するs a wonderful 小旅行する in summer, however, realising the ideal combination of 連続 and change.

運転者s have 設立する the trip irresistibly fascinating within the last few years, and the 王室の Automobile Club of Victoria has used this 大勝する for its モーター reliability 裁判,公判s.

This 大勝する forms 部分 of a 罰金 小旅行する by rail from Melbourne to 有望な in the north-east, or to Bruthen, in Gippsland, and then across the アルプス山脈 by road. The road trip consists of two main sections centred on Omeo.

From the rail terminus at 有望な to Harrietville is 16 miles over a level road, running between the mountains 平行の with the Ovens River, and passing through the small hamlet of Freeburgh. Climbing 開始するs soon after leaving Harrietville, and an 高度 of 4000 feet is reached within four miles.

Thirty miles from 有望な at The Hospice, 開始する St. Bernard, the 高さ is 5060 feet, or 3998 feet above 有望な.

A favourite excursion from The Hospice is to 開始する Hotham, six miles distant, where a wonderful 見解(をとる) is 得るd from the 首脳会議. A long 狭くする 山の尾根 rises up に向かって 開始する Feathertop. Away to the north 開始する Bogong, Victoria's highest 頂点(に達する)—6509 feet—後部s its mighty form まっただ中に an ocean of mountain 最高の,を越すs.

All around is splendid grandeur. Other points that can be visited if the tourist has time are 開始する Freezeout, The Twins, and the Bogong High Plains, 5000 feet above sea level. In winter these places are the 訴える手段/行楽地 of ski-ing 熱中している人s, who have formed a club in Victoria.

By the service car (summer season only) 有望な to Omeo is now a one-day trip. Tourists may leave 有望な at 8.30 am. on Tuesday and Friday and arrive at Omeo at 4 p.m. same day. The road follows east from The Hospice, and 横断するs the southern end of 開始する Smythe, thence along the western slope of 開始する Blowhard until 近づく 開始する Hotham. The first ten miles of this section of the road excites 熱烈な 賞賛.

In some places, 顕著に at 開始する Blowhard, the road is little more than the width of a 乗り物. Below are 広大な/多数の/重要な cliffs and yawning chasms, 負かす/撃墜する which the traveller looks 1000 to 1500 feet.

Leaving 開始する Hotham, the road is on a 落ちるing grade. Victoria River, a good trout stream, is passed. The 落ちるs on this river, about five miles distant, are a 罰金 spectacle, 特に when the river is in flood.

After minor ups and 負かす/撃墜するs, the road 急落(する),激減(する)s through a little creek, and climbs 開始する Livingstone, a very tall 頂点(に達する). It is a long pull up, and a delightfully 変化させるd road 負かす/撃墜する, winding around countless 刺激(する)s, and giving 時折の glimpses of Omeo nestling in a bower of hills.

The Victorian アルプス山脈 have been truly 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語d "The Roof of Victoria." The 大勝する across the アルプス山脈 is every year becoming ますます popular. This 見解(をとる) is from 開始する St. Bernard looking に向かって 開始する Hotham. The Alpine Road is in the foreground.

OMEO TO BRUTHEN

Illustration

There is a 正規の/正選手 モーター service between Omeo and Bruthen (190 miles by rail to Melbourne), forming the second 部分 of the link by road in the circular 小旅行する from Melbourne to Melbourne, by way of the アルプス山脈, Omeo, and the Tambo Valley. Cars leave Omeo, and after a 漸進的な climb of nine miles reach the crest of the Dividing 範囲 (2700 feet).

Running through the 採掘 郡区s of Cassilis and Tongio West, the cars continue through Swift's Creek to Doctor's Flat, and then to Tambo Crossing.

Tambo Crossing is the turning off point for the sequestered 採掘 village of Stirling, and here also is the 開始/学位授与式 of the famous rich Tambo River flats. The scenery all the way is most 逮捕(する)ing.

It is level running then to 二塁打 橋(渡しをする)s, and to the rail 関係 point at Bruthen, whence the way to the metropolis lies open by rail all the way, 190 miles, or by rail to Bairnsdale, steamer 経由で Lakes 入り口, through the beautiful Gippsland Lakes, to Sale, and then by rail to Melbourne.

Bruthen is a 栄えるing little town, and the 出口 for the 農業の and pastoral 生産/産物 of a big 地区. Bairnsdale and Sale are populous towns, with 罰金 商売/仕事 利益/興味s, and the centres of 豊富な farming 地区s.

As already 示すd, the 一連の会議、交渉/完成する trip may be made in the 逆転する direction, by train from Melbourne to Bruthen, then by car through the Tambo Valley to Omeo and across the アルプス山脈 to 有望な, and return to Melbourne by train.

The return 部分s of 鉄道 excursion tickets 問題/発行するd from Melbourne to 有望な may be used from Bruthen, Bairnsdale and Sale.

OMEO TO TALLANGATTA

Tallangatta may also be reached 経由で Omeo, and the grand scenery along the 大勝する is (人命などを)奪う,主張するd by some to equal, if not to excel, that across the アルプス山脈. There is, however, no 正規の/正選手 service throughout the whole of the distance, and special 手はず/準備 have to be made for at least one of the 行う/開催する/段階s.

A little more than 100 miles is covered by 乗り物. The Anglers' 残り/休憩(する) Hotel, 14 miles from Omeo, is the first stopping place. Within half a mile of the hotel is the Cobungra Creek. The Bundarrah River is a 4半期/4分の1 of a mile, and the Big or Mitta Mitta River, half a mile distant. There is good fishing in all these streams, and the last 指名するd river can be fished with waders for 30 miles.

Sportsmen who make Anglers' 残り/休憩(する) Hotel their (警察,軍隊などの)本部 can, by communicating with the proprietor in 前進する, arrange to be met at Omeo.

探検 of the Bogong High Plains may also be 行為/行うd from here. It would be 井戸/弁護士席 to have the services of a guide for trips of this nature. There are many waterfalls, and a 位置/汚点/見つけ出す 地元で known as The 廃虚d 城, with remarkable features 原因(となる)d by 火山の 活動/戦闘, may be 検査/視察するd.

From the Anglers' 残り/休憩(する) Hotel the road closely follows the course of the Mitta Mitta River. The river is crossed by a 橋(渡しをする) three miles from the Glen Wills 郡区, the end of the 行う/開催する/段階 coach 旅行, 35 miles from Omeo.

Sunnyside, three miles by road or one mile by a 法外な foot 跡をつける さらに先に on, is 1000 feet higher than Glen Wills. Accommodation is 利用できる at the 開始する Wills Hotel.

It is a stiff climb to the 最高の,を越す of 開始する Wills (5758 feet), but a magnificent 見解(をとる) is the reward at the 首脳会議.

Picturesque 郡区 of Mitta Mitta

An 早期に start should be made from Sunnyside for Mitta Mitta, a section of the trip for which special 輸送(する) 手はず/準備 may be necessary. A 停止(させる) is made at 雷 Creek, 22 miles from Glen Wills. A 降下/家系 of 500 feet in the next nine miles is made, and the traveller is then in 雪の降る,雪の多い Creek 郡区, or, as it is いつかs called, Granite Flat.

A 跡をつける, which 供給するs another means of reaching 開始する Bogong, has been (疑いを)晴らすd from here to the 首脳会議, distant about 18 miles. This 跡をつける can be easily followed on foot, and is negotiable for a pack horse.

After a six-mile stretch along a level road the picturesque 郡区 of Mitta Mitta is reached. From here there is a daily モーター service to Tallangatta, 38 miles away.

OMEO—A TYPICAL OLD MINING TOWN

Omeo, an old 採掘 town now, through the 落ちるing-off of gold 生産/産物, is a 影をつくる/尾行する of its former self. It is the 主要な/長/主犯 郡区 in the Australian アルプス山脈 and the centre from which roads or 跡をつけるs radiate to 有望な, Tallangatta, 開始する Kosciusko, to the wonderful 洞穴s on the 石灰岩 Creek, to Bruthen, and Bairnsdale.

The winding main street is characteristic of an old 採掘 郡区. Like most of such places it 起こる/始まるd with a few canvas テントs. They dotted the banks of the Livingstone Creek in the days when the Omeo diggings were famous for their richness.

Omeo is 2100 feet above sea level, and is linked with the 鉄道 on the south at Bruthen, and on the north at 有望な, by モーター services. The 地区 is a 罰金 cattle grazing area, and is popular with anglers, there 存在 three good trout streams to choose from.

Fourteen miles out is Lake Omeo, about two miles long by one mile wide. Past its shores runs the 井戸/弁護士席-made roadway to Benambra.

開始する Bogong is 35 miles distant from Omeo, and can be easily reached. The first 29 miles, to Middle Creek, can be covered by car passing Anglers' 残り/休憩(する) Hotel, 14 miles out. This house is within half a mile of three 罰金, swift-running streams, each of which abound with Loch Leven, Rainbow, and Brown Trout.

From Middle Creek the last six miles to the 最高の,を越す of the 開始する is covered either on horseback or on foot.

The Marble 洞穴s on the 石灰岩 River should be 含むd in the 旅程 of this Alpine 小旅行する. They are about 40 miles from Omeo, and are approached by a fair road by way of 開始する Leinster for 25 miles, thence by a rough bush 跡をつける. Buggies can be driven the whole way the last three miles 存在 on a very 法外な 負かす/撃墜する grade to the 石灰岩 River flat.

Romance is associated with Omeo, one of the oldest 採掘 towns in Victoria. It is the radial point for roads and 跡をつけるs 主要な to the mountains in the Alpine 地区.

Solid marble forms the 入り口 to the Marble Arch 洞穴. Inside the scene is unforgettably impressive. These 洞穴s are not yet opened up as a 正規の/正選手 tourist 客観的な, but are 運命にあるd to become an 優れた feature of an Alpine holiday.

開始する Kosciusko can be reached from Omeo. The distance is 75 miles, and the trip takes about five days. The first 25 miles is to 開始する Leinster, but the 残り/休憩(する) of the 旅行 must be made either on horseback or on foot. There is no accommodation en 大勝する, and tourist must 供給する themselves with (軍の)野営地,陣営ing outfits and carry all necessary 準備/条項s.

Warburton, with its comfortable guest houses, is a delightful 位置/汚点/見つけ出す for week-ends or longer vacation. This 見解(をとる) shows a section of the Yarra River with 開始する Little Joe in the background.

MOUNTS BEN CAIRN AND DONNA BUANG

One of the finest mountain holidays which one may enjoy 隣接する to Melbourne is at Warburton, in the Yarra valley, 48 miles 前線 Melbourne. 非常に高い above Warburton are 開始するs Ben Cairn (3400 feet) and Donna Buang—the hill of the crow—4080 feet. These may be made the 客観的な for walking 小旅行するs, or they may he visited by モーター, a 罰金 tourist road climbing the 範囲 and connecting with both 頂点(に達する)s.

A 井戸/弁護士席-made road runs a winding length of 12 miles to the 首脳会議 of 開始する Donna Buang, but the trip may be made in a steeper six miles by those 有能な and desirous of making the trip on foot.

From the 最高の,を越す where a 警戒/見張り 壇・綱領・公約 with a ladder of 接近 has been 築くd, a wide and far-flung 見解(をとる) is 得るd—partly forest, partly (疑いを)晴らすd valley of the Yarra just below, to the distant 高さs of the Baw Baw 高原 with its elevation of 5000 feet, and stretching still その上の eastward into Gippsland.

A 罰金 モーター 小旅行する is from Warburton to 開始する,打ち上げるing Place, thence to Healesville road at a point known as Panton's Gap, and thence running in an easterly direction to Ben Cairn, a 抱擁する granite outcrop, overlooking the Yarra Valley.

From Ben Cairn the road follows just below the crest of the mountains between the two 頂点(に達する)s.

Along the 大勝する splendid 見解(をとる)s of the valleys and glens are 得るd, and on the 降下/家系 from 開始する Donna Buang the road 勝利,勝つd through glorious forest glades of myrtle, mountain ash and eucalypts. In many places the boughs interlacing above form a magnificent archway.

From 開始する Donna Buang, the road 減少(する)s more than 3000 feet in 10 miles. Six miles of the road from 開始する Donna Buang to what is known as the Turn (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する, at the junction of the 固く結び付ける Creek road, has been 指名するd the Lovers' 運動.

From 固く結び付ける Creek one may 横断する the road along the Acheron Valley, one of the most beautiful forest and mountain 運動s in the 明言する/公表する. The grades are 平易な, and for miles the road 勝利,勝つd along the slope of the 範囲s through virgin forest at a level of 2500 feet.

THE BAW BAW RANGES FOR WILD SCENERY

Lovers of wild scenery, natural colour, and mountain life will find all on the 71-mile tourist 大勝する which 開始するs at Warburton, the train terminus on the picturesque Upper Yarra, 48 miles east of Melbourne, and ends at the 採掘 郡区 of Walhalla, another rail terminus.

A tourist 地図/計画する giving 詳細(に述べる)s of distances, 目印s, and (軍の)野営地,陣営ing 場所/位置s is 利用できる at the Tourist Bureau.

The first 行う/開催する/段階 of the 旅行 from Warburton is along the main road to 支持を得ようと努めるd Point, passing up the Yarra Valley and overlooking the bends and reaches of the river.

The Upper Yarra Hotel (20 miles) ends the first 行う/開催する/段階 of the trip at 1000 feet above sea level. Horses may be 雇うd here for the next 行う/開催する/段階 to the first 避難所 hut (14 miles) and the Yarra 落ちるs, a 一連の wonderful cascades, having a 落ちる of about 750 feet.

From the 警戒/見張り above the 落ちるs the 跡をつける is a 肉親,親類d of switchback, with a rise ever a little greater than the 落ちる, until the second 避難所 hut (14 miles) is reached. on the crest of 開始する Whitelaw.

The next 行う/開催する/段階 is an 平易な walk of about eight miles to the third 避難所 hut, on Talbot 頂点(に達する). On this walk there is ample time for a 味方する excursion to 開始する Baw Baw (5500 feet), distinctly 示すd as a 命令(する)ing point of the 範囲 by the trigonometrical 駅/配置する—a high cairn.

登山 ends at Talbot 頂点(に達する). Here the 範囲 breaks 負かす/撃墜する 突然の. The last 行う/開催する/段階 of 15 miles is first an abrupt 降下/家系 of 3500 feet in three miles on the 法外な 味方する of 開始する Erica (4800 feet), through a magnificent forest of white gum and ferns.

Then the tourist 跡をつける is lost in older bush roads, which centre upon the Thomson River 橋(渡しをする), and finally upon Walhalla—strangest and most 利益/興味ing of all the old 採掘 towns of Victoria.

This is a 見解(をとる) looking up the Aberfeldie Valley showing a 罰金 succession of 刺激(する)s which end on the banks of the Thomson River. The Baw Baw 範囲s, which are 述べるd above, are in the 薄暗い distance on the left.

For convenience, the 大勝する has been 述べるd as from Melbourne by way of Warburton, but the 大勝する may be 逆転するd at will. Should this be done, the morning train is taken to Moe, on the main Gippsland line, where 乗客s change into the 狭くする 計器 train for the 26-mile 旅行 to Walhalla.

1.—The 鉄道 橋(渡しをする) crossing the Thomson River, 近づく Walhalla, one of the many famous trout streams in Victoria. 2, 3 and 4.—The 狭くする 計器 鉄道 running from Moe to Walhalla is 宣言するd to be the most picturesque 鉄道 大勝する in Victoria. It 勝利,勝つd along the beautiful valleys between 非常に高い hills, across burbling streams and at times in sight of the roadway. 5.—Walhalla 郡区 is 始める,決める in delightful surroundings の中で the hills. It is the jumping-off point for dozens of delightful walks and 小旅行するs in the mountain 地区.

WALHALLA—A DELIGHTFUL MOUNTAIN RETREAT

With its winding and 狭くする street, and its miles of mountain 跡をつけるs, Walhalla 現在のs many quaint attractions for the tourist. The 旅行 there over the 26 miles of 狭くする 計器 鉄道 from Moe, curving 一連の会議、交渉/完成する hillsides, skirting 深い ravines, and crossing mountain streams, is an experience in itself. It would he difficult to imagine a finer scenic 鉄道.

Soon after crossing the Thomson River 橋(渡しをする), a 罰金 structure supported by 固く結び付ける piers, the train enters the Stringers' Creek Gorge. After an enthralling 旅行, the train draws up at the Walhalla 駅/配置する, built 権利 across the creek, with mountains rising 突然の within a few yards on either 味方する.

Gold 生産/産物 is now ごくわずかの, although 探検の/予備の work is still going on to re-discover the rich vein which made Walhalla famous; but this delightful little town, in its 深い and 狭くする valley hemmed in on either 味方する by 非常に高い 高さs, will always be the goal enchanting of the holiday 製造者.

The Weeping 激しく揺する is いっそう少なく than a mile from the 鉄道 駅/配置する. From the Greenleaf 刺激(する), about 3i miles out, the best 見解(をとる) of the 地区 can be 得るd.

Within a mile of the town is 黒人/ボイコット Diamond Hill. This is the highest point in the 即座の 周辺, 存在 2075 feet above sea level.

A walk of a little more than two miles to Lammer's Creek will 井戸/弁護士席 返す those who do not mind some stiff climbing. The 大勝する is to Maidentown, and 負かす/撃墜する the Eureka 刺激(する).

Good trips for the trout fisherman are those to the junction of the Thomson and Aberfeldy Rivers, a 位置/汚点/見つけ出す little たびたび(訪れる)d, and to the Steel 橋(渡しをする).

Tourists 持つ/拘留するing return halves of tickets from Melbourne to Warburton may return from Walhalla on 支払い(額) of the 選び出す/独身 fare for the extra mileage.

The 狭くする 計器 鉄道 line to Walhalla, 106 miles from Melbourne, is here seen in Stringer's Creek Gorge.

Above—The Grampians Mountains, 164 miles north-west of Melbourne on the main line to Adelaide, are ideal for the lover of rugged 高さs. Below—Thryptomene grows in profusion on the Grampion Mountains. It is here seen in all its glory.

THE GRAMPIANS A WILD AND RUGGED LAND OF FLOWERS

To reach the wondrous mountain 地区 of The Grampians, tourists leave the train at Stawell. This attractive town, which 借りがあるs its 創立/基礎 to sensational 発見s of gold in the 早期に days, is 150 miles northwest of Melbourne, on the main line to Adelaide.

Cars run 定期的に the 14 miles from the town to the mountains. There are half a dozen houses of accommodation within Hall's Gap and in the Fyan's Creek Valley.

The general 形態/調整 of the mountains is that of a 巨大(な) boomerang—開始する William (3830 feet), the 最高潮に達するing point, 存在 on the bend.

開始する 無, the northern extremity, is 32 miles away in a straight line, while 開始する Sturgeon, at the other end, is 28 miles south-westerly.

適切に speaking, the Grampians are the section from 開始する William north; to the south the mountains take the 指名する of the Serra 範囲s. The Grampians are unique. Not only are the mountains a striking 集まり in relation to the surrounding flatness, but they have a character all their own. There is nothing else in Victoria like them. They are a system of 非常に高い sandstone cliffs.

The 激しく揺する 形式s are remarkable, the scenery is of the finest, and the high colours of the cliffs 追加する to the general 影響. Nature has stained the 激しく揺する 直面するs with her 全世界の/万国共通の pigment, アイロンをかける rust, in all shades of yellow, brown and red.

Splendid Panoramic 見解(をとる)s

The 広大な panoramas from the 目だつ 頂点(に達する)s are の中で the finest in the 明言する/公表する. From one point a 広大な section of Western Victoria lies stretched out before the tourist like a 巨大(な) 救済 地図/計画する.

Starting out from one of the accommodation houses, and に引き続いて a 井戸/弁護士席-defined ジグザグの 跡をつける, one is led through the Devil's Gap, and by a short 相違 to Mushroom 激しく揺する. This 激しく揺する 重さを計るs about 50 トンs, yet is supported by a small stalk-like pedestal. From here the path leads 上向きs to the famous Sundial 激しく揺する, a ponderous 集まり of sandstone, from which one of the finest 内部の 見解(をとる)s of the Grampians is 得るd.

Turning off from the old road to the Borough Huts, a winding road has been 削減(する) on the 山腹 for 5ス miles, 主要な to 開始する Rosea, passing on the way the beautiful Silverband 落ちるs.

From the 落ちるs the 跡をつける leads through long glades of tree-ferns to the foot of the Grand Stairway up the mountain. This stairway is a remarkable natural ledge about 13 feet wide, 主要な 権利 up the 800-feet 直面する of the precipice.

An 平易な climb for another mile leads to the 首脳会議 of 開始する Rosea (3095 feet), so called in 賞賛 of the beautiful native shrub, Pultenoea Rosea, which is 設立する nowhere else but here and on 開始する William.

Change of scenery of a delightful nature may be enjoyed by spending a few days in the 周辺 of the Borough Huts. Still その上の variety and wilder forms of nature may be 見解(をとる)d on excursions to the Barbican 激しく揺するs.

From the picnic grounds lying just within Hall's Gap many delightful excursions may be made. That which should afford most enjoyment is the 探検 of Wonderland. Its charms are innumerable, and no 訪問者 should leave without feasting his 注目する,もくろむs upon them. A feature of it is The Silent Street, formed by cliffs of 広大な/多数の/重要な 高さ running 平行の to each other, leaving but a 狭くする space between, and almost 会合 総計費.

広大な/多数の/重要な 塀で囲むs of Sandstone

Upon 現れるing from The Silent Street, the 訪問者 passes The Unicorn, and may then proceed to try his 力/強力にするs of self-支配(する)/統制する on The 神経 実験(する), a 狭くする arch-形態/調整d rocky promontory jutting out from the 最高の,を越す of the cliff with 広大な/多数の/重要な depths on either 味方する. The feat is to walk out to the end, turn 一連の会議、交渉/完成する, and walk 支援する again. A 信奉者 in "Safety First" would leave it alone.

The Grand Canyon is formed by 塀で囲むs of sandstone about 300 feet high, with many curious forms etched by Nature upon them. Its termination has been made rather abrupt by a 抱擁する 落ちる of 激しく揺する, over which flows a beautiful waterfall known as the Bridal 隠す.

To the naturalist, 願望(する)ing to 熟考する/考慮する the ways of the eagle, the Grampians 申し込む/申し出 制限のない 施設s. Kangaroo, wallaby, the emu, and other native creatures, are to be seen in the 範囲s. They are 保護するd by the Game 行為/法令/行動する.

A description of this mountain 地域 would be incomplete without について言及する of its floral beauty. It is a botanical 楽園. Its wild flowers in the season are famous for their variety and loveliness. There are showy Grevilleas, Boronias, and Epacrids, with orchids and ferns in 600 different varieties. Quaint grass trees are a feature.

Native ヒース/荒れ地, which grows in profusion, is the finest in the 明言する/公表する, During the flowering season 本人自身で 行為/行うd 小旅行するs are arranged by the 政府 Tourist Bureau.

MOUNT MACEDON—AN IDEAL RESORT

Comparative proximity to Melbourne, good train service, and natural beauty, make 開始する Macedon (3000 feet above sea level) one of Victoria's best tourist 訴える手段/行楽地s. At the trigonometrical 駅/配置する the 高さ is 3325 feet, and at the 首脳会議 of Camel's Hump 3294 feet. From here 広範囲にわたる 見解(をとる)s, 延長するing in all directions, may be 得るd, 特に in the south, with Port Phillip Bay in the distance. Almost 予定 south 嘘(をつく) the You Yangs, while in the north tower the mighty 頂点(に達する)s of the Victorian アルプス山脈.

The best panorama of the surrounding country is 得るd at the Camel's Hump, where a tablet 示すing the points of 利益/興味 on the landscape has been 築くd by the late Sir Thomas Carmichael, a former 知事 of the 明言する/公表する, in memory of the happy times he had spent on the mountain.

Macedon Enjoys an Equable 気候

借りがあるing to its elevated position, the 地区 enjoys an equable 気候. This makes it ideal for holiday making. The 空気/公表する is invigorating even on the hottest days of summer. 冷静な/正味の and refreshing nights give new life to those in need of 残り/休憩(する) and recreation. The mountain may be reached by travel to either Macedon (43 miles) or to 木造のd (48ス miles).

Two 郡区s, Macedon and Upper Macedon, are in the 地区. 近づく to the Macedon 鉄道 駅/配置する is the 明言する/公表する Nursery, covering about 90 acres, where millions of trees are grown each year for 配当 to the 明言する/公表する forests throughout Victoria. The nursery surrounds the 地区 貯蔵所, and is 井戸/弁護士席 worthy of a visit.

Upper Macedon is four miles away. There are comfortable guest houses here. On the higher levels are the 明言する/公表する pine 農園s. Hidden の中で the luxuriant trees are also beautiful mountain homes, belonging to 商売/仕事 and professional men from the city.

Special 控訴,上告 During the Autumn

The country cottage of the 知事 of Victoria is also on the southern slope of the mountain, and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. 私的な nurseries on the mountain are a delight at all seasons of the year. During the autumn Macedon has a special 控訴,上告, because of the beautiful autumn 色合いs on the trees.

It is about two miles from the Camel's Hump to the 首脳会議 of 開始する Macedon itself. The 見解(をとる) from here is not as good as from the Hump because of the 木材/素質 which 迎撃するs the 見通し.

There is ample 範囲 for the lover of fern glades. A magnificent fernery lies along the course of the Stony Creek, and a 跡をつける runs through it almost to the foot of the 開始する, crossing and re-crossing the creek several times on the way.

Geologists will find much to 利益/興味 them in the Macedon 地区.

There is an excellent train service to Macedon—four trains to and from the city each day, with 補足(する)d services during holiday periods.

There are splendid accommodation houses on the northern slopes of the 開始する, where the 見解(をとる)s are splendid, and the 気候 is just as を締めるing as on the opposite 味方する. Descending the 開始する に向かって 木造のd is the picturesque 住居 of the late W. P. McGregor. 広範囲にわたる grounds surround the house, and there are terraced gardens. その上の 負かす/撃墜する に向かって 木造のd are 広範囲にわたる ゴルフ links. The road thence to the 郡区 横断するs wooded country.

WOODEND—A FINE HEALTH RESORT

木造のd, surrounded by hills and forests of eucalypt, is held in esteem as a health 訴える手段/行楽地. Five miles out is the Hanging 激しく揺する. It is difficult to say why it has been give this 指名する. The 激しく揺する rises to a 高さ of 400 feet above the surrounding country, and 平易な 接近 is 伸び(る)d to its 首脳会議 by 井戸/弁護士席-graded paths along its sloping 味方するs.

Its comparatively flat 首脳会議 is strewn with gigantic 玉石s, evidently the result of 火山の 活動/戦闘 in some far distant age. Fanciful resemblances have been traced in some of the 激しく揺するs to 確かな personal peculiarities and supposed likenesses to animal forms.

From the 首脳会議 is obtainable an excellent 見解(をとる) of the rich 農業の lands stretching に向かって Lancefield and Romsey, 開始する Alexander, the Bullengarook 範囲s, the 郡区 of 木造のd and 開始する Macedon.

開始する Abrupt, 2,720 feet, 隣接する to Dunkeld, 178 miles from Melbourne, is one of the most 利益/興味ing 頂点(に達する)s of the Serra 範囲s in western Victoria. Its rugged 高さs are easily accessible.

THE SERRA RANGES, DUNKELD AND HAMILTON DISTRICT

The Serras 株 with the Grampians the distinction of 存在 the only mountain 訴える手段/行楽地s in the Western 地区 of Victoria. Dunkeld, a pastoral 郡区 on the Wannon River, 178 miles from Melbourne, is the place through which they are most conveniently reached.

すぐに at the 支援する of the town rise the two 頂点(に達する)s—開始する Sturgeon, 1946 feet, so called because of its supposed likeness to the fish of that 指名する, and 開始する Abrupt, 2720 feet. From 開始する Abrupt the curiously serrated 山の尾根 of the Serra 範囲 stretches in a northeasterly direction for a distance of more than 30 miles.

A 運動 to 城 頂点(に達する), skirting the Wannon River, is of 利益/興味, the scenery 存在 different from that seen in other parts of the 明言する/公表する.

開始する Sturgeon, 1,946 feet, also 隣接するs Dunkeld. It is a sister to 開始する Abrupt, and is so 指名するd because of its supposed likeness to the fish of that 指名する.

NAYOOK AND NOOJEE, THE YOU YANGS, MOUNT MARTHA AND ARTHUR'S SEAT

NAYOOK AND NOOJEE—DEEP GLENS AND GREAT FORESTS

An intensely 利益/興味ing field for the tourist is served by the 支店 line of 鉄道 which junctions with the main Gippsland line at Warragul, and 延長するs beyond Neerim South as far as Noojee, 88ス miles from Melbourne. It is a grazing 地区 on the fringe of a magnificent hardwood forest, where the mountain ash tree 競争相手s the 広大な/多数の/重要な redwoods of the Yosemite Valley, in California.

From Noojee, the valleys of the Loch and Latrobe Rivers can be 侵入するd, and the southern slopes of the 広大な/多数の/重要な Dividing 範囲, of which 開始する Horsfall is a 目だつ feature, can be 調査するd.

The enchanting Glen Nayook is not far from the Nayook 駅/配置する. It is crammed 十分な of beautiful tree ferns, and has been (判決などを)下すd accessible by 跡をつけるs.

Before Noojee is reached the traveller crosses some of the highest trestle 鉄道 橋(渡しをする)s in Victoria. The scenery on the last few miles of the trip is 罰金.

Noojee, the 終点 駅/配置する, is 据えるd between the Loch and Toorongo Rivers, both of which flow south into the Latrobe. The 駅/配置する gives 接近 to glorious wooded and fern bowered valleys comparatively seldom visited, and その結果 所有するing a newness and freshness which the nature lover cannot fail to 高く評価する/(相場などが)上がる.

THE YOU YANGS ARE OF HISTORIC INTEREST

The You Yangs, 36 miles from Melbourne, are just big hills with trees, that seem to 存在する in spite of Nature rather than because of it, with age-worn granite 激しく揺するs, which swing the mind for a moment away into antiquity. These 激しく揺するs and these hills, the geologists tell us, are immensely old, perhaps 40,000,000 years.

From the topmost 激しく揺する (1154 feet), Flinders 頂点(に達する), Captain Matthew Flinders, R.N., on May 1, 1802, 調査するd the Bay—a fact 記録,記録的な/記録するd on a tablet 挿入するd in the granite.

The 見通し from here is remarkable. By your very feet is 幅の広い, expansive Port Phillip Bay, and to the northward Hobson's Bay. Still その上の away is mighty Melbourne, gleaming in the sun, and seeming to 嘘(をつく) at the foot of 開始する Dandenong, although we know やめる 井戸/弁護士席 that 開始する Dandenong is 24 miles beyond. We look to the south over Geelong, by (疑いを)晴らす and lovely Corio Bay, and we behold in a 見通し of the 未来 what a splendid city Geelong will be as one of the world's greatest ports and as a throbbing centre of 製造業の 産業.

A 完全にする 回路・連盟 may be made of the 範囲 of 見通し. On the distant skyline may be seen 開始する Gellibrand, 開始する Elephant, 開始する Anakie, 開始する Buninyong, 開始する Warrenheip, 開始する Blackwood, 開始する Bullengarook, 開始する Macedon, 開始する 失望, the Gellibrand Pile Light, 開始する Dandenong, Arthur's Seat, Cape Schanck, Portarlington, Point Flinders, Corio Bay, and Geelong.

The You Yangs may be reached by train to Little River or Lara and a walk of a few miles.

MOUNT MARTHA

開始する Martha, 44 miles from Melbourne, lies upon a gentle slope overlooking the sea and the esplanade at Dromana. From the mountain 最高の,を越す is obtainable a lovely 一連の 見解(をとる)s 延長するing in every direction, and 含むing the 高さs of Macedon, and the You Yangs to the north and north-west across the 介入するing surface of Port Phillip.

西方の 嘘(をつく) Portarlington and St. Leonard's, whilst さらに先に south the 注目する,もくろむ 範囲s past the nearer slopes of Dromana, 栄冠を与えるd with beautiful 住居s, to the proud prominence of Arthur's Seat, and beyond all to the open waters of Bass 海峡 seen through the 長,率いるs.

ARTHUR'S SEAT

The 首脳会議 of Arthur's Seat, 隣接する to the 郡区 of Dromana, on the Mornington 半島, is 1200 feet above sea level. There is a splendid 運動 to the 最高の,を越す, affording many beautiful panoramic 見解(をとる)s on the way. The 見通し from the tower at the 最高の,を越す is superb.
