ME and 法案 O'Brien was flat broke when we come out of Jerry Rourke's American 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業. Yes, sir—half a hour 岸に, and cleaned along by of a land shark with a pair of educated dice. Not having the coin to 支払う/賃金 his 罰金 in 事例/患者 my white bulldog マイク followed his usual custom of 涙/ほころびing off some 警官,(賞などを)獲得する's pants 脚, I left him with Jerry till I could raise some dough.

井戸/弁護士席, me and 法案 sallied 前へ/外へ into the night looking for anything that might mean money, experience having told us that you can find mighty 近づく anything in the wharf-味方する streets of Singapore. 井戸/弁護士席, what we did find was the last thing we'd of 推定する/予想するd.

We was passing a dark alley in the native 4半期/4分の1s when we heard a woman 叫び声をあげるing: "Help! Help! Help!"

We dashed into the alley すぐに, and in the faint light we seen a girl struggling with a big Chinee. I seen the flash of a knife and I yelled and dived for him, but he dropped the frail and scooted 負かす/撃墜する the alley like a 脅すd rabbit, ducking the cobble-石/投石する 法案 heaved after him.

"Are you 傷つける, 行方不明になる?" I asked with my usual 儀礼, 解除するing her to her feet.

"No, but I'm 脅すd stiff," she answered. "That was a の近くに call—let's get out of here before the big Chinee comes 支援する with a 暴徒."

So we legged it out into the street. Under the light of the street lamps we saw she was a white girl—American by her accent, and not hard to look at either, with her big grey 注目する,もくろむs and wavy 黒人/ボイコット hair.

"Where at shall we take you to, 行方不明になる?" asked 法案.

"I dance at the Bristol Cabaret," said she. "But let's go into the saloon—the 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業-keep's a friend of 地雷 and I want to buy you men a drink. It's the least I can do, for saving my life."

"Don't について言及する it, 行方不明になる," said I with a courtly 屈服する. "We was glad to be of service. Howthesomever, if it will give you any 楽しみ to buy us a drink, we would not think of refusin'."

"More 特に as we have just lost all our jack in a crap game, and are slowly but surely perishin' of かわき," said 法案, who ain't got my natural tact.

So we went in and got a 支援する room to ourselves, and while we was 負かす/撃墜するing our アルコール飲料—me and 法案, that is, because the girl said she never even tasted the stuff—she cupped her chin in her 手渡すs and 残り/休憩(する)d her 肘s on the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する and gazing 深い in my 注目する,もくろむs, she sighed 深く,強烈に.

"If I had a big strong man like you to 保護する me," she said in open 賞賛, "I wouldn't have to work in 共同のs like the Bristol, and be 乱用d by such swipes as tried to slit my gullet tonight."

I involuntarily 拡大するd my enormous chest and said: "井戸/弁護士席, lady, as long as Steve Costigan, A.B. 水夫, can stand on his feet and 攻撃する,衝突する with either maulie, you got no call to be afraid of anybody. The best thing, next to fightin', that me and 法案 O'Brien here do is 援助(する) ladies in 苦しめる."

She shook her 長,率いる wistfully. "You've been very 肉親,親類d to me, but you sailors are all alike—a girl in every port. But—I 港/避難所't even introduced myself—my 指名する is Joan 井戸/弁護士席s, and I'm from Philadelphia."

"We're mighty glad to 会合,会う somebody from the 明言する/公表するs," said 法案. "But why was that slant-注目する,もくろむ tryin' to knife you?"

"I—I really shouldn't tell," said she, looking 肉親,親類d of 脅すd.

"We ain't tryin' to intrude in your 私的な 事件/事情/状勢s 非,不,無," I 急いでd to 追加する.

"I couldn't keep a secret from a man like you," said she with a languishing ちらりと見ること that made my heart skip a (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域, "so I'll tell you. Take a look out the door to see that nobody's listening at the 重要な-穴を開ける."

Nobody wasn't, so she went on.

"Did you ever hear of the No Sen 結社?" We shook our 長,率いるs. We knowed in a general way about the big 結社s, or merchant houses, which just about 支配(する)/統制するs the Orient, but we hadn't had no experience with them.

"井戸/弁護士席," said she, "it's the richest, most secret 結社 in the world. When I first (機の)カム here I worked as 私的な 長官 for old To Ying, who's one of its highest secret 公式の/役人s. He 解雇する/砲火/射撃d me because I wouldn't let him get fresh with me—the old slant-注目する,もくろむd snake—and I went to work at the Bristol. But once you've been on the inside of an organization like that, you have ways of knowing things that other people don't."

Her 注目する,もくろむs sparkled and her 握りこぶしs clenched as she got all excited. "I'm in on the biggest クーデター of the century!" she exclaimed. "If I live, I'll be a rich woman! Did you ever hear of the Korean 巡査 Company? No? 井戸/弁護士席, it's about to go 破産者/倒産した. They've never paid a 選び出す/独身 (株主への)配当. 在庫/株's selling at a dollar a 株, with no 買い手s. But, listen! They've 攻撃する,衝突する the biggest 巡査 地雷 that the world has ever seen! The No Sens are 静かに buying up all the 在庫/株 they can get—at a dollar a 株! As soon as I 設立する this out I ran 負かす/撃墜する to the 仲買人's and bought a hundred 株. It took every cent I had. But one of the No Sen 秘かに調査するs saw me, and that's why old To Ying tried to have me bumped off. He's afraid I'll squeal.

"Think what a 暴動 there'll be on the 株式市場 tomorrow when the word gets in! Tonight Korean 巡査's selling for a dollar! Tomorrow it'll be 価値(がある) a thousand dollars a 株!"

"持つ/拘留する everything!" I said, 肉親,親類d of dizzy. "You mean you shoot a buck and get a thousand on the spin of the wheel?"

"I sure do—say, why don't you men buy some 在庫/株? It's the chance of a lifetime! Most of it has been bought up by the No Sens, but I know where I can get you a few hundred 株."

法案 laughed 激しく. "Sister, it might 同様に be sellin' for a thousand per 権利 now as far as we're 関心d. We ain't got a 薄暗い! And my watch is in a pawn-shop in Hong Kong."

"I'd 喜んで lend you some money," said she, "but I spent all 地雷 on 在庫/株—"

"Wait a minute," said I, getting on my feet, "I got a idee. 行方不明になる 井戸/弁護士席s—Joan, is it 安全な for you to be left alone for a few hours?"

"Sure; the 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業-keep goes off 義務 in a few minutes, and he can see me home."

"All 権利. I think we can raise some dough. Where can we see you, in say about three hours?"

"Come to the Alley of the Seven 蜜柑s," said she, "and knock on the door with the green dragon carved on it. I'm going to hide there till the No Sens やめる looking for me. I'll be waiting for you," said she, giving my rugged 手渡す a timid, shy little squeeze that made my big, honest heart ぱたぱたする like a boy's.

Then me and 法案 was out in the 霧がかかった 薄暗い lighted streets and making 跡をつけるs. I led the way through 狭くする streets and garbage-strewn 支援する alleys till we was in the toughest section of Singapore's waterfront. It's dangerous in the daytime; it's pure Hades at night.

権利 on the wharfs we come to a big ramshackle building, which a struggling 調印する 発表するd as Heinie Steinman's Grand International Fight 円形競技場. This 捨てる was all lighted up, and was shaking with the ferocious roars which went up inside.

"Hello, Steve; hello, 法案," said the fellow at the door, a 下落する who knowed us 井戸/弁護士席. "How '一区切り/(ボクシングなどの)試合 a couple good ringside seats?"

"Gangway," said I. "We ain't got no money—but I'm fightin' here tonight."

"G'病弱な," said he, "you ain't even matched with nobody—"

"One 味方する!" I roared, 製図/抽選 支援する my famous 権利. "I'm fightin' somebody here tonight, get me?"

"井戸/弁護士席, go in and fight somebody that's paid to git mutilated!" he squawked, turning わずかに pale and climbing up on the ticket 反対する, so me and 法案 stalked haughtily within.

If you want to 熟考する/考慮する humanity in its crudest and most 野蛮な form, take in one of Heinie Steinman's fight shows. The usual (人が)群がる was there—sailors, longshoremen, beach-combers, 凶漢s and crooks; men of every 産む/飼育する and color and description, from the toughest ships and the worst ports in the world. Undoubtedly, the men which fights at the International 成し遂げるs to the toughest (人が)群がるs in the world. The 闘士,戦闘機s is mostly sailors trying to 選ぶ up a few dollars by 大虐殺ing each other.

井戸/弁護士席, as me and 法案 entered, the fans was 発言する/表明するing their 不賛成 in a トン that would of curled the hair of a 長,率いる-hunter. The main event had just driven the patrons into a frenzy by going to the 限界, and they was howling like a pack of wolves because they'd been no ノックアウト. The (人が)群がる that comes to Heinie's 円形競技場 don't make no talk about 存在 wishful to see a 展示 of ボクシング. What they want is 血の塊/突き刺す and 破産した/(警察が)手入れするd noses, and if somebody don't get just about killed they think they have been gypped, and 難破させる the 共同の.

Just as me and 法案 come in, the 主要な/長/主犯s scurried out of the (犯罪の)一味 followed by a 申し込む/申し出ing of 議長,司会を務める 底(に届く)s, bricks and dead cats, and Heinie, who'd been 事実上の/代理 as 審判(をする), tried to 静める the 暴徒—which only irritated them more and somebody 攻撃する,衝突する Heinie square between the 注目する,もくろむs with a rotten tomato. The maddened (人が)群がる was 急速な/放蕩な reaching a point where they was liable to do anything, when me and 法案 climbed into the (犯罪の)一味. They knowed us, and they 肉親,親類d of 静かなd 負かす/撃墜する a minute and then started yelling fiercer than ever.

"For my sake, Steve," said Heinie, 肉親,親類d of pale, wiping the vegetable out of his 注目する,もくろむs, "say somethin' to 'em before they start a 暴動. Them two hams that just faded away only cake-walked through the 一区切り/(ボクシングなどの)試合 and these wolves is ready to lynch everybody 関心d, 特に includin' me."

"Have you got somebody I can fight?" I asked.

"No, I ain't," he said, "But I'll 発表する—"

"I don't see no announcer," I growled, and turning to the (人が)群がる I silenced them by the simple 過程 of roaring: "Shut up!" in a 発言する/表明する which 溺死するd them all out.

"Listen here, you tin-horn sports!" I bellered. "You've already paid your dough, but do you think you've got your money's 価値(がある)?"

"No!" they 雷鳴d in a 発言する/表明する that started Heinie's 膝s to knocking. "We been robbed! We been rooked! We been gypped! Give us our money 支援する! 難破させる the 捨てる! Hang that Dutchman!"

"Shut up, you Port Mahon 粗野な人間s!" I roared. "If you're sports enough to jar loose and (不足などを)補う a purse of twenty-five dollars, I'll fight any man in the house to a finish, 勝利者 take all!"

At that they 解除するd the roof. "'At's the stuff!" they whooped. "にわか雨 負かす/撃墜する gents. We know Steve! He always gives us a run for our money!"

Coins and a few 法案s began to にわか雨 on the canvas, and two men jumped up from の中で the (人が)群がる and started for the (犯罪の)一味. One was a red-長,率いるd Englishman and the other was a lithe 黒人/ボイコット-haired fellow. They met just outside the ropes.

"One 味方する, bloke," growled the red-長,率いる. "H'I'm fightin' this 血まみれの Yank!"

黒人/ボイコット-長,率いる's 権利 発射 out like a 乱打するing 押し通す and red-長,率いる kissed the 床に打ち倒す, and laid still. The 暴徒 went into hysterics of joy and the 勝利者 hopped over the ropes, followed by three or four of the most villainous looking 襲う,襲って強奪するs I ever hope to see.

"I weel fight Costigan!" said he, and Heinie give a 深い sigh of 救済. But 法案 swore under his breath.

"That's Panther Cortez," said he. "And you know you ain't been trainin' の近くに lately."

"Never mind," I growled. "Count the money. Heinie, you keep your 手渡すs off that dough till 法案 counts it."

"Thirty-six dollars and fifty cents," 発表するd 法案, and I turned to the slit-注目する,もくろむd devil which called hisself Panther Cortez, and growled: "You willin' to fight for that much—勝利者 take all, loser gets nothin' but a 頭痛?"

He grinned with a flash of white fangs. "Sure!—I fight you just for the fun of knocking you 冷淡な!"

I turned my 支援する on him with a snarl and, giving Heinie the money to 持つ/拘留する, though it was a terrible 危険 to take, I strode to one of the make-転換 dressing rooms, where I was given a pair of dingy trunks, which Heinie pulled off a 予選 boy which had gone on earlier in the evening and was still out.

I gave little thought to my 対抗者, though 法案 kept grouching about the fact that I was going to get so little for knocking out such a man as Cortez.

"You oughta be gettin' at least a hundred and fifty," 法案 不平(をいう)d. "This Cortez is a mean puncher, and shifty and dirty. He ain't never been knocked out."

"井戸/弁護士席," said I, "it ain't never too late to begin. All I want you to do is watch and see that 非,不,無 of his handlers don't こそこそ動く around and 攻撃する,衝突する me with a water 瓶/封じ込める. Thirty-six 株 means thirty-six thousand dollars for us. Tomorrer we'll kick the Old Man in the slats for a 記念品 of 別れの(言葉,会), and start livin'! No more standin' watch and gettin' sunburnt and froze for somebody else—"

"Hey!" yelled Heinie, looking in at the door, "hurry up, will ya? This (人が)群がる's goin' clean nuts waitin'. The Panther's already in the (犯罪の)一味."

As I climbed through the ropes I was 迎える/歓迎するd by a roar such as must of 似ているd them given by the Roman 暴徒s when a favorite gladiator was throwed to the lions. Cortez was seated in his corner, smiling like a big lazy ジャングル cat, the lids drooping 負かす/撃墜する over his glittering 注目する,もくろむs in a way that always irritated me.

He was a mixed 産む/飼育する—Spanish, French, Malay and heck knows what else, but all devil. He was the choice fighting man 船内に the Water Snake, a British 大型船 with a shady 評判, and though I'd never fought him, I knowed he was a dangerous man. But, gosh, all he 代表するd to me just then was thirty-six dollars and fifty cents, which in turn 代表するd thirty-six thousand dollars.

Heinie waved his 武器 and said: "Gents, you all know these boys! Both of them has fought here plenty of times before, and—"

The (人が)群がる rose up and 溺死するd him out: "Yeah, we know 'em. 削減(する) the introductions and le's see 血の塊/突き刺す spilt!"

"負わせるs," yelled Heinie to make hisself heard. "Sailor Costigan of the Sea Girl, one hundred ninety 続けざまに猛撃するs! Panther Cortez of the Water Snake, one hundred eighty-five 続けざまに猛撃するs!"

"That's a 嘘(をつく)!" roared 法案. "He 重さを計るs one-ninety if he 重さを計るs a ounce!"

"Aw, stow yer gab, ye bleedin' mick!" snarled one of the Panther seconds, 押すing out his lantern jaw. 法案 bent his 権利 on that jaw and the limey went over the ropes on his 長,率いる. The 暴徒 拍手喝采する madly; things was going just to their taste! All they needed to make it a perfect evening was for me or Cortez to get our neck broke—preferably both of us.

井戸/弁護士席, Heinie chased Cortez' handlers out of the (犯罪の)一味, and 法案 climbed out, and the 虐殺(する) was on. Heinie was 審判(をする), but he didn't give us no 指示/教授/教育s. We'd fought enough there to know what we was supposed to do, and that was to sock and keep on socking till somebody kissed the canvas and stayed there. The gloves we wore was at least a ounce and a half はしけ than the 正規の/正選手 style, and nothing was a foul at the International as long as both fellows could stand on their feet.

The Panther was lithe, rangy, quick; taller than me, but not so 激しい. We come together in the middle of the (犯罪の)一味, and he 攻撃する,衝突する with cat-like 速度(を上げる). Left to the 直面する, 権利 to the 団体/死体 and left to the jaw. 同時の I 発射 my 権利 to his chin, and he 攻撃する,衝突する the canvas on the seat of his trunks. The (人が)群がる howled, but he wasn't 傷つける much, おもに surprised and mad. His 注目する,もくろむs 炎d. He took the count of nine, though he could of got up sooner, and bounced up, stopping me in my 跡をつけるs with a hard left to the mouth. I 行方不明になるd with a 宙返り飛行ing left, took a 権利 to the ribs and landed hard under the heart. He spat in my 直面する and began working his 武器 like pistons—left, 権利, left, 権利, to the 直面する and 団体/死体 while the (人が)群がる went nuts. But that was my game; I grinned savagely and を締めるd my feet, boring in and slugging hard with both 手渡すs.

A minute of this, and he 支援するd away in a hurry, 血 trickling from a 削減(する) on his cheek. I was after him and sank a left 深い in his midriff that made him clinch and 持つ/拘留する on. On the break he nailed me with a straight 権利 to the 長,率いる, and followed it up with a hard left to the 注目する,もくろむ, but failed to land his 権利, and got a wicked 権利 hook to the ribs. I 乱打するd away at his 団体/死体, but he was all 肘s, and, irritated, I switched to his 長,率いる and nearly tore it off with a 炎ing 権利 hook just at the gong.

"That 一連の会議、交渉/完成する was yours by a mile," said 法案, between 交流ing 侮辱s with Cortez' handlers. "But watch out; he's dangerous and dirty—"

"I'm goin' to ask Joan to marry me," I said. "I can tell she's fell for me, 権利 off. I dunno why it is, but it seems like they's a 致命的な fascination about me for women. They can't keep from floppin' for me at first sight—"

The gong sounded and I dashed out to collect that $36.50.

井戸/弁護士席, the Panther had 設立する out that he couldn't 貿易(する) wallops with me, so he come out ボクシング. I don't mean he tin-canned and 棒 his bicycle, like some 目だつ 闘士,戦闘機s I could について言及する. He was one baby that could fight and box at the same time, if you get me. When I say he boxed, I mean he feinted me out of position, kept me off balance, speared me with cutting left jabs, ducked my ferocious returns, tied me up in the clinches, nearly ripped my を回避する with 権利 uppercuts in の近くに, stayed inside my wings, and 一般に made a 次第に損なう outa me.

Inside of a minute he had me bleeding at the mouth and nose, and I hadn't landed solid once. The (人が)群がる was howling like wolves and 法案 was cussing something terrible, but I wasn't worried. I had all night to lick him in, and I knowed I'd connect sooner or later, and I did quicker than I'd thought. It was a 粉砕するing 権利 hook under the heart, and it bent Senyor Cortez 二塁打. While in this position I clouted him heartily behind the ear and drove him to his 膝s. He was up without a count, slipped the terrible swing I threw at him, and having clinched and tied me up, 捨てるd his glove laces across my 注目する,もくろむs and ground his heel into my instep. He hung on like a 正規の/正選手 octopus 関わりなく my cruel and unusual 誓いs. Heinie wouldn't pull him loose, and finally we both went to the canvas still clinched in a vise-like embrace.

This 事故 threw the (人が)群がる into a perfect delirium of delight, which was 増加するd by Cortez 真面目に chewing my ear while we writhed on the mat. Driven to frenzy I tore loose, arose and の近くにd the Panther's left 注目する,もくろむ with a terrible 権利 swing the minute he was on his feet. He (機の)カム 支援する with a 削除するing left hook to the 団体/死体, ripped the same 手渡す to my already 乱打するd 直面する, and stopped a straight left with his own 地図/計画する. At that moment the gong rang.

"I'm goin' to kick Heinie Steinman loose from his britches after the fight!" snarled 法案, shaking with 激怒(する) as he mopped the 血 off my mangled ear. "If that wasn't the dirtiest foul I ever seen—"

"I wonder if we couldn't buy a half 株 with that fifty cents," I meditated. "That'd be five hundred dollars—"

I 急ぐd out for the third でっちあげる,人を罪に陥れる inclined to settle 事柄s quick, but Cortez had other 計画(する)s. He opened a 削減(する) over my 注目する,もくろむ with a left hook, ripped a 権利 hook to my sore ear and went under my return. He come up with a venomous 権利 under the heart, ducked my left swing and jabbed me three times on the nose without a return. Maddened, I hurtled into him headlong, grabbed him with my left and clubbed him with my 権利 till he tied me up.

At の近くに 4半期/4分の1s we 貿易(する)d short arm 権利s and lefts to the 団体/死体 and he was the first to 支援する away, not forgetting to flick me in the 注目する,もくろむ with his long left as he did so. I was 権利 on 最高の,を越す of him and suddenly he lowered his 長,率いる and butted me square in the mouth, bringing a flow of claret that dyed my chin. He 即時に ripped in a 権利 uppercut that 緩和するd a bunch of my teeth and 支援するd me into the ropes with a perfect whirlwind of left and 権利 hooks to the 長,率いる.

With the ropes cutting into my 支援する I 決起大会/結集させるd, 安定したd myself and 粉砕するd a 権利 under his heart that stopped him in his 跡をつけるs. A left to the jaw 始める,決める him 支援する on his heels and 動揺させるd his teeth like a castinet, and before I could 攻撃する,衝突する again the gong sounded.

"This is lastin' かなり longer than I thought," I said to 法案, who was mopping 血 and talking to Heinie with some heat.

"My gosh, 法案," said Heinie. "Be reasonable! If I stopped this fight and awarded it to Steve or anybody else on a foul, these 凶漢s wouldst 涙/ほころび this buildin' 負かす/撃墜する and hang me to the rafters. They craves a ノックアウト—"

"They're goin' to get one!" I snarled. "Never mind the fouls. Say, 法案, did you ever see such (疑いを)晴らす, honest 注目する,もくろむs as Joan's got? I know women, I wanta tell you, and I never seen a straighter, squarer jane in my life—"

At the gong we went into a clinch and 続けざまに猛撃するd each other's midsections till Heinie broke us. Cortez wasn't taking much chances, fighting 用心深い and 用心深い. He 削除するd away with his left, but he kept his 権利 high and never let it go unless he was sure of 上陸. He was using his 肘s plenty in the clinches, and butting every chance he got, but Heinie pretended not to see. The (人が)群がる didn't care; as long as a man fought, they didn't care how he fought. 法案 was making 発言/述べるs that would of curled the toes of a Hottentot, but nobody seemed to mind.

About the middle of the (競技場の)トラック一周, Cortez began making 発言/述べるs about my ancestors that made me good and mad. My Irish got up, and I went for him like a wild bull, 長,率いる 負かす/撃墜する and 武器 大打撃を与えるing. He 発射 his left and 味方する-stepped, but the left ain't made that can stop me when my temper's up, and I was 権利 on 最高の,を越す of him too 急速な/放蕩な for him to get away. I 乱打するd him across the (犯罪の)一味, but just as I thought I had him pinned on the ropes he 味方する-stepped and I fell into them myself.

This 高度に amused the (人が)群がる, and Cortez 麻薬中毒の three lefts to my 長,率いる while I was untangling myself, and when I slewed around and swung, he ducked and 衝突,墜落d my jaw with a 権利 hook he brought up from the 床に打ち倒す and which had me groggy for the first time that night. Sensing victory, he 発射 the same 手渡す three times to my 長,率いる, knocking me 支援する into the ropes where he sank his left to the wrist in my midriff.

I was dizzy and わずかに sick, but I saw Cortez' snarling 直面する in a sort of red 煙霧 and I 粉砕するd my 権利 square into the middle of that 直面する. He was off his guard—not 推定する/予想するing a return like that and his 長,率いる went 支援する like it was hinged. The 血 splattered, and the (人が)群がる howled with relish. I 急落(する),激減(する)d after him, but he crouched and as I (機の)カム in he went under my swing and 麻薬中毒の his 権利 hard to my groin. Oh Jerusha! I dropped like my 脚s had been 削減(する) from under me, and writhed and 新たな展開d on the canvas like a snake with a broken 支援する.

I had to clench my teeth to keep from vomiting and I was sick—nauseated if you get what I mean. I looked up and Heinie, with his 直面する white, was 直す/買収する,八百長をするing to count over me.

"One!" he said. "Two! Three!"

"You hog-fat nit-wit!" 叫び声をあげるd 法案. "If you count him out I'll blow your brains through the 支援する of your skull!"

Heinie shivered like he had a 冷気/寒がらせる; he took a quick look at 法案, then he 発射 a 脅すd ちらりと見ること at the ravening (人が)群がる, and he ducked his 長,率いる like a tortoise, shut his 注目する,もくろむs and kept on counting.

"Four! Five! Six!"

"Thirty-six thousand dollars!" I groaned, reaching for the ropes. The 冷淡な sweat was standing out on my brow as I pulled myself up.

"Seven! Eight! Nine!"

I was up, feet を締めるd wide, 持つ/拘留するing the 最高の,を越す rope to keep from 落ちるing. Cortez (機の)カム 肺ing in to finish me, and I knowed if I let go I'd 落ちる again. I hunched my shoulder and 封鎖するd his 権利, but he ripped his left to my chin and 衝突,墜落d his 権利 high on my 寺—and then the gong sounded. He socked me again after the gong, before he went to his corner—but a little thing like that don't 原因(となる) no comment in the International Fight 円形競技場.

法案 helped me to my corner, 悪口を言う/悪態ing between clenched teeth, but, with my usual recuperative 力/強力にするs, I was already 回復するing from the 影響s of that foul blow. 法案 emptied a bucket-十分な of 冷淡な water over me, and much to Cortez' disgust I come out for the fifth でっちあげる,人を罪に陥れる as good as new. He didn't think so at first, but a wicked 権利-hander under the heart shook him to the toes and made him 支援する pedal in a hurry.

I went for him like a whirlwind and, seeming somewhat discouraged, he began his old 策略 of 攻撃する,衝突する and run. A sudden thought 攻撃する,衝突する me that maybe all the 株 was bought up. This fight looked like it was going on forever; here I was chasing Panther Cortez around the (犯罪の)一味 and doing no 損失, while the No Sens was buying up all the Korean 巡査 in sight. Every minute a fortune was slipping that much さらに先に away from me, and this ネズミ 辞退するd to stand up and be knocked out like a man. I nearly went crazy with fury.

"Come on and fight, you yellow skunk!" I 激怒(する)d, while the (人が)群がる yelled 血-thirstily, beginning to be irritated at Cortez' 策略, which was beginning to be more run than 攻撃する,衝突する. "Stand up to it, you white-肝臓d, yellow-bellied, Porchugeeze half-caste!"

They's always something that'll get under a fellow's hide. This got under Cortez'. Maybe he did have some 産む/飼育する 血 in him. Anyway, he went clean crazy. He give a howl like a 血-mad ジャングル-cat, and in spite of the wild yells from his corner, he tore in with his 注目する,もくろむs glaring and froth on his lips. Biff! Bim! Bam! I was caught in a perfect whirlwind of punches; it was like 存在 clawed by a real panther. But, with a savage grin, I slugged it out with him. That's my game! He 攻撃する,衝突する three blows to my one, but 地雷 were the ones that counted.

There was the salty 強い味 of 血 in my mouth, and 血 in my 注目する,もくろむs; it reddened Heinie's shirt, and stained the canvas under our feet. It spattered in the 直面するs of the yelling (犯罪の)一味-siders at every blow. But my gloves were 沈むing 深い at every sock, and I was 満足させるd. Toe to toe we 削除するd and 粉砕するd, till the (犯罪の)一味 swum red and the 雷鳴 of our blows could be heard all over the house. But it couldn't last; flesh and 血 couldn't stand it. Somebody had to go—and it was Cortez.

Flat on his 支援する he 攻撃する,衝突する, and bounced 支援する up without a count. But I was on him like a 血-mad tiger. I took his left and 権利 in the 直面する without hardly feeling them, and 粉砕するd my 権利 under his heart and my left to his jaw. He staggered, glassy 注目する,もくろむd; a 衝突,墜落ing 権利 to the jaw dropped him under the ropes on his 直面する. Maybe he's there yet. Anyhow, up to the count of ten he didn't bat an eyelash.

"Gimme that dough!" I snarled, jerking it out of Heinie's 気が進まない 手渡す.

"Hey!" he 抗議するd. "What about my 削減(する)? Didn't I 促進する this show? Didn't I stand all the expense? You think you can fight in my (犯罪の)一味 for nothin'—"

"If I had your 神経 I'd be King of Siam," I growled, shaking the 血 outa my 注目する,もくろむs, and at that moment 法案's 権利 met Heinie's jaw like a caulking mallet 会合 a ship's 船体, and Heinie went to sleep. The (人が)群がる とじ込み/提出するd out, gabbling incoherently. That last touch was all that was needed to make the night a perfect success for them.

"Here, give this to Cortez when he wakes up!" I snarled, 押すing a five-dollar 法案—American money—into the 手渡す of one of the Panther's seconds. "He's dirty, but he's game. And he don't know it, but it's the same as me givin' him five thousand dollars. Come on, 法案."

I changed my 着せる/賦与するs in the dressing-room, 公式文書,認めるing in a 割れ目d mirror that my 直面する looked like I'd fallen afoul a wildcat, and likewise that I had a beautiful 黒人/ボイコット 注目する,もくろむ or two. We skinned out a 味方する door, but I reckon some 凶漢s in the (人が)群がる had seen us get the money—and they's plenty of men in the Singapore waterfront who'd 削減(する) your throat for a 薄暗い. The second I stepped out into the dark alley-way something 衝突,墜落d against my 長,率いる, and I went to my 膝s seeing about a million 星/主役にするs. I come up again and felt a knife-辛勝する/優位 lick along my arm. I 攻撃する,衝突する out blind and landed by sheer luck. My 権利 解除するd my unseen 攻撃者 clean off his feet and dropped him like a 解雇(する) on the ground. 一方/合間 法案 had grappled with two more and I heard the 割れ目 as he knocked their 長,率いるs together.

"You 傷つける, Steve?" he asked, feeling for me, because it was that dark you couldn't see your 手渡す before you.

"Scratched a little," I said, my 長,率いる still (犯罪の)一味ing from the blackjack sock. "Let's get outa here. Looks like we got to lick everybody in Singapore before we get that 在庫/株."

We got out of the alley and (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域 it 負かす/撃墜する the street, people looking 肉親,親類d of funny at us. 井戸/弁護士席, I guess I was a sight, what with my 黒人/ボイコット 注目する,もくろむ and 削減(する) and 乱打するd 直面する, the bump on my 長,率いる, and my arm bleeding from the knife 負傷させる. But nobody said nothing. People in places like that have got a way of minding their own 商売/仕事 that politer folks could 井戸/弁護士席 copy.

"We better stop by the Waterfront 使節団 before we go for that 在庫/株, Steve," said 法案. "The gospel-shark will 包帯 your arm and not 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 a cent—and keep his mouth shut afterward."

"No, no, no!" said I, becoming irascible because of my 傷つけるs and the 延期する. "We're goin' to get that 在庫/株 before we do anything else."

We was passing a 賭事ing hall and 法案's 注目する,もくろむs lighted as he heard the click and whir of the roulette wheel.

"I feel lucky tonight," he muttered. "I betcha I could run that thirty bucks up to a hundred in no time."

"And I'd give my arm for a 発射 of licker," I snapped. "But I tell you, we ain't takin' no chances. We can guzzle and play fan-tan and roulette all we want to after we get rich."

After what seemed a century we arrived at the dismal, dark and vile smelling alley that the Chinese call the Alley of the Seven 蜜柑s—why, I never could 人物/姿/数字. We 設立する the door with the green dragon and knocked, and my heart stood still for 恐れる Joan wouldn't be there. But she was. The door opened and she give a gasp as she saw me.

"Quick, don't keep us in suspense," 法案 gasped. "Is the 在庫/株 all took up?"

"Why, no," she said. "I can get you—"

"Then do it, quick," I said, 圧力(をかける)ing the money into her 手渡す. "There's thirty-one dollars and fifty-cents—"

"Is that all?" she said, like she was かなり disappointed.

"If you'd a seen how I won it, you'd think it was a lot," I said.

"井戸/弁護士席," she said. "Wait a minute. The man who owns that 在庫/株 lives 負かす/撃墜する the alley."

She 消えるd 負かす/撃墜する the dark alley-way, and we waited with our hearts knocking 穴を開けるs in our ribs for what seemed like hours. Then she (機の)カム out of the 不明瞭, looking 肉親,親類d of white and ghostly in the 影をつくる/尾行するs, and slipped a long envelope into my hot and sweaty 手渡す. I hove a 広大な sigh of 救済 and started to say something, but she put her finger to her lips.

"Shhh! I musn't be seen with you. I must go, now." And before I could say a word, she'd 消えるd in the dark.

"Open the envelope, Steve," 勧めるd 法案. "Let's see what a fortune looks like!"

I opened it and pulled out a slip of paper. I moved over to the lamp-light in the street to read what was wrote on it. Then I give a roar that brought 直面するs to every window on the street. 法案 jerked the paper from me and glared at it and then he give a maddened howl and joined me in a frenzied burst of horrible talk that brought a dozen 警官,(賞などを)獲得するs on the run. We wasn't in no 条件 to make any coherent reply, and the 続いて起こるing 暴動 didn't end till the reserves was called out.

On the paper which was in the envelope Joan 井戸/弁護士席s gave me in return for my hard-earned money was wrote:

This is to certify that you are する権利を与えるd to thirty-one and a half 株 of 在庫/株 in the Korean 巡査 Company which was 解散させるd in the year 1875. Don't worry about the No Sen 結社; it was extinct before the Boxer 反乱. Of all the suckers that have fallen for this 汚職,収賄, you 次第に損なうs were the easiest. But 元気づける up; you're out only $31.50, and I took one bonehead for $300. A girl has got to live.
