A-AEA crouched の近くに to the 洞穴 mouth, watching Ga-nor with wondering 注目する，もくろむs. Ga-nor's 占領／職業 利益／興味d her, 同様に as Ga-nor himself. As for Ga-nor, he was too 占領するd with his work to notice her. A たいまつ stuck in a niche in the 洞穴 塀で囲む dimly illuminated the roomy cavern, and by its light Ga-nor was laboriously tracing 人物／姿／数字s on the 塀で囲む. With a piece of flint he scratched the 輪郭（を描く） and then with a twig dipped in ocher paint 完全にするd the 人物／姿／数字. The result was 天然のまま, but 墓／厳粛／彫る／重大な 証拠 of real artistic genius, struggling for 表現.

It was a mammoth that he sought to 描写する, and little A-aea's 注目する，もくろむs 広げるd with wonder and 賞賛. Wonderful! What though the beast 欠如（する）d a 脚 and had no tail? It was tribesmen, just struggling out of utter 野蛮／未開, who were the critics, and to them Ga-nor was a past master.

However, it was not to watch the reproduction of a mammoth that A-aea hid の中で the scanty bushes by Ga-nor's 洞穴. The 賞賛 for the 絵 paled beside the look of 肯定的な adoration with which she 好意d the artist. Indeed, Ga-nor was not unpleasing to the 注目する，もくろむ. Tall he was, 非常に高い 井戸／弁護士席 over six feet, leanly built, with mighty shoulders and 狭くする hips, the build of a fighting man. Both his 手渡すs and his feet were long and わずかな／ほっそりした; and his features, thrown into bold profile by the flickering たいまつ-light, were intelligent, with a high, 幅の広い forehead, topped by a mane of sandy hair.

A-aea herself was very 平易な to look upon. Her hair, 同様に as her 注目する，もくろむs, was 黒人／ボイコット and fell about her わずかな／ほっそりした shoulders in a rippling wave. No ocher tattooing 色合いd her cheek, for she was still unmated.

Both the girl and the 青年 were perfect 見本／標本s of the 広大な／多数の／重要な Cro-Magnon race which （機の）カム from no man knows where and 発表するd and 施行するd their 最高位 over beast and beast-man.

A-aea ちらりと見ることd about nervously. All ideas to the contrary, customs and タブーs are much more 狭くする and vigorously 施行するd の中で savage peoples.

The more 原始の a race, the more intolerant their customs. 副／悪徳行為 and licentiousness may be the 支配する, but the 外見 of 副／悪徳行為 is shunned and 非難するd. So if A-aea had been discovered, hiding 近づく the 洞穴 of an unattached young man, denunciation as a shameless woman would have been her lot, and doubtless a public whipping.

To be proper, A-aea should have played the modest, demure maiden, perhaps skillfully 誘発するing the young artist's 利益／興味 without seeming to do so. Then, if the 青年 was pleased, would have followed public 支持を得ようと努めるing by means of 天然のまま love-songs and music from reed 麻薬を吸うs. Then 物々交換する with her parents and then—marriage. Or no 支持を得ようと努めるing at all, if the lover was 豊富な.

But little A-aea was herself a 示す of 進歩. Covert ちらりと見ることs had failed to attract the attention of the young man who seemed engrossed with his artistry, so she had taken to the 慣習に捕らわれない way of 秘かに調査するing upon him, in hopes of finding some way to 勝利，勝つ him.

Ga-nor turned from his 完全にするd work, stretched and ちらりと見ることd toward the 洞穴 mouth. Like a 脅すd rabbit, little A-aea ducked and darted away.

When Ga-nor 現れるd from the 洞穴, he was puzzled by the sight of a small, slender 足跡 in the soft loam outside the 洞穴.

A-aea walked primly toward her own 洞穴, which was, with most of the others, at some distance from Ga-nor's 洞穴. As she did so, she noticed a group of 軍人s talking excitedly in 前線 of the 長，指導者's 洞穴.

A mere girl might not intrude upon the 会議s of men, but such was A-aea's curiosity, that she dared a scolding by slipping nearer. She heard the words "足跡" and "gur-na" (man-ape).

The 足跡s of a gur-na had been 設立する in the forest, not far from the 洞穴s.

"Gur-na" was a word of 憎悪 and horror to the people of the 洞穴s, for creatures whom the tribesmen called "gur-na," or man-apes, were the hairy monsters of another age, the brutish men of the Neandertal. More 恐れるd than mammoth or tiger, they had 支配するd the forests until the Cro-Magnon men had come and 行うd savage 戦争 against them. Of mighty 力／強力にする and little mind, savage, bestial and cannibalistic, they 奮起させるd the tribesmen with loathing and horror—a horror transmitted through the ages in tales of ogres and goblins, of werewolves and beast-men.

They were より小数の and more cunning, now. No longer they 急ぐd roaring to 戦う／戦い, but cunning and frightful, they slunk about the forests, the terror of all beasts, brooding in their brutish minds with 憎悪 for the men who had driven them from the best 追跡（する）ing grounds.

And ever the Cro-Magnon men 追跡するd them 負かす／撃墜する and 虐殺（する）d them, until sullenly they had 孤立した far into the 深い forests. But the 恐れる of them remained with the tribesmen, and no woman went into the ジャングル alone.

いつかs children went, and いつかs they returned not; and 捜査員s 設立する but 調印するs of a 恐ろしい feast, with 跡をつけるs that were not the 跡をつけるs of beasts, nor yet the 跡をつけるs of men.

And so a 追跡（する）ing party would go 前へ／外へ and 追跡（する） the monster 負かす／撃墜する. いつかs it gave 戦う／戦い and was 殺害された, and いつかs it fled before them and escaped into the depths of the forest, where they dared not follow. Once a 追跡（する）ing party, 無謀な with the chase, had 追求するd a 逃げるing gur-na into the 深い forest and there, in a 深い ravine, where overhanging 四肢s shut out the sunlight, numbers of the Neandertalers had come upon them.

So no more entered the forests.

A-aea turned away, with a ちらりと見ること at the forest. Somewhere in its depths lurked the beast-man, piggish 注目する，もくろむs glinting crafty hate, malevolent, frightful.

Someone stepped across her path. It was Ka-nanu, the son of a councilor of the 長，指導者.

She drew away with a shrug of her shoulders. She did not like Ka-nanu and she was afraid of him. He 支持を得ようと努めるd her with a mocking 空気／公表する, as if he did it 単に for amusement and would take her whenever he wished, anyway. He 掴むd her by the wrist.

"Turn not away, fair maiden," said he. "It is your slave, Ka-nanu."

"Let me go," she answered. "I must go to the spring for water."

"Then I will go with you, moon of delight, so that no beast may 害（を与える） you."

And …を伴って her he did, in spite of her 抗議するs.

"There is a gur-na abroad," he told her 厳しく. "It is lawful for a man to …を伴って even an unmated maiden, for 保護. And I am Ka-nanu," he 追加するd, in a different トン; "do not resist me too far, or I will teach you obedience."

A-aea knew somewhat of the man's ruthless nature. Many of the 部族の girls looked with 好意 on Ka-nanu, for he was bigger and taller even than Ga-nor, and more handsome in a 無謀な, cruel way. But A-aea loved Ga-nor and she was afraid of Ka-nanu. Her very 恐れる of him kept her from resisting his approaches too much. Ga-nor was known to be gentle with women, if careless of them, while Ka-nanu, その為に showing himself to be another 示す of 進歩, was proud or his success with women and used his 力／強力にする over them in no gentle fashion.

A-aea 設立する Ka-nanu was to be 恐れるd more than a beast, for at the spring just out of sight of the 洞穴s, he 掴むd her in his 武器.

"A-aea," he whispered, "my little antelope, I have you at last. You shall not escape me."

In vain she struggled and pleaded with him. 解除するing her in his mighty 武器 he strode away into the forest.

Frantically she strove to escape, to dissuade him.

"I am not powerful enough to resist you," she said, "but I will 告発する／非難する you before the tribe."

"You will never 告発する／非難する me, little antelope," he said, and she read another, even more 悪意のある 意向 in his cruel countenance.

On and on into the forest he carried her, and in the 中央 of a glade he paused, his hunter's instinct 警報.

From the trees in 前線 of them dropped a hideous monster, a hairy, misshapen, frightful thing.

A-aea's 叫び声をあげる re-echoed through the forest, as the thing approached. Ka-nanu, white-lipped and horrified, dropped A-aea to the ground and told her to run. Then, 製図／抽選 knife and ax, he 前進するd.

The Neandertal man 急落（する），激減（する）d 今後 on short, gnarled 脚s. He was covered with hair and his features were more hideous than an ape's because of the grotesque 質 of the man in them. Flat, ゆらめくing nostrils, 退却／保養地ing chin, fangs, no forehead whatever, 広大な／多数の／重要な, immensely long 武器 dangling from sloping, incredible shoulders, the monster seemed like the devil himself to the terrified girl. His apelike 長，率いる （機の）カム scarcely to Ka-nanu's shoulders, yet he must have outweighed the 軍人 by nearly a hundred 続けざまに猛撃するs.

On he （機の）カム like a 非難する buffalo, and Ka-nanu met him squarely and boldly. With flint ax and obsidian dagger he thrust and smote, but the ax was 小衝突d aside like a toy and the arm that held the knife snapped like a stick in the misshapen 手渡す of the Neandertaler. The girl saw the councilor's son wrenched from the ground and swung into the 空気／公表する, saw him 投げつけるd （疑いを）晴らす across the glade, saw the monster leap after him and rend him 四肢 from 四肢.

Then the Neandertaler turned his attention to her. A new 表現 （機の）カム into his hideous 注目する，もくろむs as he 板材d toward her, his 広大な／多数の／重要な hairy 手渡すs horridly smeared with 血, reaching toward her.

Unable to 逃げる, she lay dizzy with horror and 恐れる. And the monster dragged her to him, leering into her 注目する，もくろむs. He swung her over his shoulder and waddled away through the trees; and the girl, half-fainting, knew that he was taking her to his lair, where no man would dare come to 救助（する） her.

Ga-nor （機の）カム 負かす／撃墜する to the spring to drink. Idly he noticed the faint 足跡s of a couple who had come before him. Idly he noticed that they had not returned.

Each 足跡 had its individual characteristic. That of the man he knew to be Ka-nanu. The other 跡をつける was the same as that in 前線 of his 洞穴. He wondered, idly as Ga-nor was wont to do all things except the 絵 of pictures.

Then, at the spring, he noticed that the 足跡s of the girl 中止するd, but that the man's turned toward the ジャングル and were more 深く，強烈に imprinted than before. Therefore Ka-nanu was carrying the girl.

Ga-nor was no fool. He knew that a man carries a girl into the forest for no good 目的. If she had been willing to go, she would not have been carried.

Now Ga-nor (another 示す of 進歩) was inclined to 干渉する things not 付随するing to him. Perhaps another man would have shrugged his shoulders and gone his way, 反映するing that it would not be 井戸／弁護士席 to 干渉する with a son of a councilor. But Ga-nor had few 利益／興味s, and once his 利益／興味 was roused he was inclined to see a thing through. Moreover, though not renowned as a 闘士，戦闘機, he 恐れるd no man.

Therefore, he 緩和するd ax and dagger in his belt, 転換d his 支配する on his spear, and took up the 追跡する.

On and on, deeper and deeper into the forest, the Neandertaler carried little A-aea.

The forest was silent and evil, no birds, no insects broke the stillness. Through the overhanging trees no sunlight filtered. On padded feet that made no noise the Neandertaler hurried on.

Beasts slunk out of his path. Once a 広大な／多数の／重要な python （機の）カム slithering through the ジャングル and the Neandertaler took to the trees with surprising 速度(を上げる） for one of his gigantic 本体，大部分／ばら積みの. He was not at home in the trees, however, not even as much as A-aea would have been.

Once or twice the girl glimpsed another such monster as her captor. Evidently they had gone far beyond the ばく然と defined 境界s of her race. The other Neandertal men 避けるd them. It was evident that they lived as do beasts, 部隊ing only against some ありふれた enemy and not often then. Therein had lain the 推論する／理由 for the success of the Cro-Magnons' 戦争 against them.

Into a ravine he carried the girl, and into a 洞穴, small and ばく然と illumined by the light from without. He threw her 概略で to the 床に打ち倒す of the 洞穴, where she lay, too terrified to rise.

The monster watched her, like some demon of the forest. He did not even jabber at her, as an ape would have done. The Neandertalers had no form of speech whatever.

He 申し込む／申し出d her meat of some 肉親，親類d—uncooked, of course. Her mind reeling with horror, she saw that it was the arm of a Cro-Magnon child. When he saw she would not eat, he devoured it himself, 涙／ほころびing the flesh with 広大な／多数の／重要な fangs.

He took her between his 広大な／多数の／重要な 手渡すs, bruising her soft flesh. He ran rough fingers through her hair, and when he saw that he 傷つける her he seemed filled with a fiendish glee. He tore out handfuls of her hair, seeming to enjoy devilishly the 拷問ing of his fair 捕虜. A-aea 始める，決める her teeth and would not 叫び声をあげる as she had done at first, and presently he desisted.

The ヒョウ-肌 衣料品 she wore seemed to enrage him. The ヒョウ was his hereditary 敵. He plucked it from her and tore it to pieces.

And 一方／合間 Ga-nor was hurrying through the forest. He was racing now, and his 直面する was a devil's mask, for he had come upon the 血まみれの glade and 設立する the monster's 跡をつけるs, 主要な away from it.

And in the 洞穴 in the ravine the Neandertaler reached for A-aea.

She sprang 支援する and he 急落（する），激減（する）d toward her. He had her in a corner but she slipped under his arm and sprang away. He was still between her and the outside of the 洞穴.

Unless she could get past him, he would corner her and 掴む her. So she pretended to spring to one 味方する. The Neandertaler 板材d in that direction, and quick as a cat she sprang the other way and darted past him, out into the ravine.

With a bellow he 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金d after her. A 石／投石する rolled beneath her foot, flinging her headlong; before she could rise, his 手渡す 掴むd her shoulder. As he dragged her into the 洞穴, she 叫び声をあげるd, wildly, frenziedly, with no hope of 救助（する）, just the 叫び声をあげる of a woman in the しっかり掴む of a beast.

Ga-nor heard that 叫び声をあげる as he bounded 負かす／撃墜する into the ravine. He approached the 洞穴 速く but 慎重に. As he looked in, he saw red 激怒（する）. In the vague light of the 洞穴, the 広大な／多数の／重要な Neandertaler stood, his piggish 注目する，もくろむs on his 敵, hideous, hairy, 血-smeared, while at his feet, her soft white 団体／死体 contrasting with the shaggy monster, her long hair gripped in his 血-stained 手渡す, lay A-aea.

The Neandertaler bellowed, dropped his 捕虜 and 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金d. And Ga-nor met him, not matching brute strength with his lesser might, but leaping 支援する and out of the 洞穴. His spear leaped and the monster bellowed as it tore through his arm. Leaping 支援する again, the 軍人 jerked his spear and crouched. Again the Neandertaler 急ぐd, and again the 軍人 leaped away and thrust, this time for the 広大な／多数の／重要な hairy chest. And so they 戦う／戦いd, 速度(を上げる） and 知能 against brute strength and savagery.

Once the 広大な／多数の／重要な, 攻撃するing arm of the monster caught Ga-nor upon the shoulder and 投げつけるd him a dozen feet away, （判決などを）下すing that arm nearly useless for a time. The Neandertaler bounded after him, but Ga-nor flung himself to one 味方する and leaped to his feet. Again and again his spear drew 血, but 明らかに it seemed only to enrage the monster.

Then before the 軍人 knew it, the 塀で囲む of the ravine was at his 支援する and he heard A-aea shriek as the monster 急ぐd in. The spear was torn from his 手渡す and he was in the しっかり掴む of his 敵. The 広大な／多数の／重要な 武器 encircled his neck and shoulders, the 広大な／多数の／重要な fangs sought his throat. He thrust his 肘 under the 退却／保養地ing chin of his antagonist, and with his 解放する／自由な 手渡す struck the hideous 直面する again and again; blows that would have felled an ordinary man but which the Neandertal beast did not even notice.

Ga-nor felt consciousness going from him. The terrific 武器 were 鎮圧するing him, 脅すing to break his neck. Over the shoulder of his 敵 he saw the girl approaching with a 広大な／多数の／重要な 石／投石する, and he tried to 動議 her 支援する.

With a 広大な／多数の／重要な 成果／努力 he reached 負かす／撃墜する over the monster's arm and 設立する his ax. But so の近くに were they clinched together that he could not draw it. The Neandertal man 始める，決める himself to break his 敵 to pieces as one breaks a stick. But Ga-nor's 肘 was thrust under his chin, and the more the Neandertal man tugged, the deeper drove the 肘 into this hairy throat. Presently he realized that fact and flung Ga-nor away from him. As he did so, the 軍人 drew his ax, and striking with the fury of desperation, clove the monster's 長，率いる.

For a minute Ga-nor stood reeling above his 敵, then he felt a soft form within his 武器 and saw a pretty 直面する, の近くに to his.

"Ga-nor!" A-aea whispered, and Ga-nor gathered the girl in his 武器.

"What I have fought for I will keep," said he.

And so it was that the girl who went 前へ／外へ into the forest in the 武器 of an abductor （機の）カム 支援する in the 武器 of a lover and a mate.
