As six o'clock struck the 行列 of the un-dined began to stream beneath the electric arcade which graces the 入り口 to Cristiani's. The doors swung unceasingly; the mirrors no longer 反映するd a mere 騎兵大隊 of （米）棚上げする／（英）提議するs and 築く serviettes; a hum of conversation now mingled with the clatter of knives and the popping of corks; and the きびきびした scurry of waiters' slippers 取って代わるd the stillness of the afternoon.

Although the restaurant had been （人が）群がるd some time before he arrived, Mr Romney Pringle had 安全な・保証するd his favourite seat opposite the feminine print after Gainsborough, and in the intervals of feeding listened to a 選択 from Mascagni through a convenient electrophone, price sixpence in the slot. It was a warm night for the time of year, a 蒸し暑い （一定の）期間 having 後継するd a week of biting north-east 勝利，勝つd, and as the evening wore on the atmosphere grew somewhat oppressive, more 特に to those who had dined 井戸／弁護士席. Its 影響s were not very 明白な on Pringle, whose complexion (a small port-ワイン 示す on his 権利 cheek its only blemish) was of that fairness which imparts to its fortunate possessor the 空気／公表する of 青年 until long past forty; 特に in a man who shaves clean, and habitually goes to bed before two in the morning.

As the smoke from Pringle's havana 花冠d 上向きs to an extractor, his 注目する，もくろむ fell, not for the first time, upon a diner at the next （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する. He was 年輩の, probably on the wrong 味方する of sixty, but with his 築く 人物／姿／数字 might easily have （人命などを）奪う，主張するd a few years' grace, while the retired 兵士 spoke in his scrupulous neatness, and in the 削減する of a carefully tended moustache. He had finished his dinner some little time, but remained seated, 熟考する／考慮するing a letter with an intentness more 予定 to its 支配する than to its length, which Pringle could see was by no means 過度の. At last, with a gesture almost 平等に 構内／化合物d of weariness and disgust, he rose and was helped into his overcoat by a waiter, who held the door for him in the obsequious manner of his 肉親，親類d.

The languid attention which Pringle at first bestowed on his 隣人 had by this time given place to a deeper 利益／興味, and as the swing-doors の近くにd behind the old gentleman, he scarcely repressed a start, when he saw lying beneath the 空いている （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する the 同一の letter which had received such careful 熟考する／考慮する. His first impulse was to run after the old gentleman and 回復する the paper, but by this time he had disappeared, and the waiter 存在 also invisible, Pringle sat 負かす／撃墜する and read:

'The Assyrian Rejuvenator Co.,
82, Barbican, E.C. April 5th

'Dear Sir—We 悔いる to hear of the 失敗 of the "Rejuvenator" in your 手渡すs. This is かもしれない 予定 to your not having followed the directions for its use 十分に closely, but I must point out that we do not 保証（人） its infallible success. As it is an expensive 準備, we do not 収容する／認める the 司法（官） of your 論争 that our 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金s are exorbitant. In any 事例／患者 we cannot entertain your request to return the whole or any part of the 料金s. Should you 行為／法令／行動する upon your 脅し to take 訴訟／進行s for the 回復 of the same, we must 持つ／拘留する your good self 責任がある any publicity which may follow your 裁判，公判 of the 準備.

To Pringle this 事務的な communication hardly seemed to deserve so much consideration as 陸軍大佐 Sandstream had given it, but having read and pondered it over afresh, he walked 支援する to his 議会s in Furnival's Inn.

He lived at No. 33, on the left as you enter from Holborn, and anyone who, 規模ing the 石／投石する stairs, reached the second 床に打ち倒す, might 観察する on the 入り口 to the 前線 始める，決める of 議会s the legend, 'Mr Romney Pringle, Literary スパイ／執行官'. によれば high 当局, the 推論する／理由 of 存在 of the literary スパイ／執行官 is to 行為／法令／行動する as a 衝撃を和らげるもの between the ravening publisher and his prey. But although a very 罰金 oak bureau with capacious pigeon-穴を開けるs stood conspicuously in Pringle's sitting-room, it was tenanted by no rolls of MS, or type-written sheets. Indeed, little or no 商売／仕事 appeared to be transacted in the 議会s. The 衝撃を和らげるもの was at 現在の idle, if it could be said to have ever worked! It was '残り／休憩（する）ing' to use the theatrical 表現.

Mr Pringle was an 早期に riser, and as nine o'clock chimed the next morning from the 厚かましさ／高級将校連 lantern-clock which ticked sedately on a mantel unencumbered by the usual litter of a bachelor's ４半期/4分の1s, he had already spent some time in consideration of last night's 出来事/事件, and a その上の 熟考する／考慮する of the letter had only served 完全に to 誘発する his curiosity, and decided him to 調査／捜査する the 事件／事情／状勢 of the mysterious 'Rejuvenator'. 打ち明けるing a cupboard in the 底（に届く） of the bureau, he 公表する／暴露するd a 連隊 of 瓶／封じ込めるs and jars. ぱらぱら雨ing a few 減少（する）s from one on to a hare's-foot, he 後継するd, with a little 摩擦, in 完全に 除去するing the port-ワイン 示す from his cheek. Then from another phial he saturated a sponge and rubbed it into his eyebrows, which turned in the 過程 from their 初めの yellow to a jetty 黒人／ボイコット. From a box of several, he selected a waxed moustache (that most facile article of disguise), and having 大（公）使館員d it with a few 減少（する）s of spirit-gum, covered his scalp with a 黒人／ボイコット wig, which, as is 一般的に the 事例／患者, remained an 積極的な 詐欺 in spite of the most assiduous 調整. 満足させるd with the completeness of his disguise, he sallied out in search of the offices of the 'Assyrian Rejuvenator', 影響する／感情ing a 軍の 耐えるing which his わずかな／ほっそりした but tall and straight-支援するd 人物／姿／数字 readily enabled him to assume.

'My 指名する is Parkins—Major Parkins,' said Pringle, as he opened the door of a mean-looking room on the second 床に打ち倒す of No. 82, Barbican. He 演説（する）／住所d an oleaginous-looking gentleman, whose curly locks and 耐えるd 示唆するd the winged bulls of Nineveh, and who appeared to be the 単独の 代表者／国会議員 of the 関心. The latter 屈服するd politely, and 手渡すd him a 議長，司会を務める.

'I have been asked,' Pringle continued, 'by a friend who saw your 宣伝 to call upon you for some その上の （警察などへの）密告，告訴（状）.'

Now the 支配する of rejuvenation 存在 a delicate one, 特に where ladies are 関心d, the 商売／仕事 of the company was おもに transacted through the 地位，任命する. So seldom, indeed, did a （弁護士の）依頼人 願望（する） a personal interview, that the Assyrian-looking gentleman jumped to the 結論 that his 訪問者 was 利益／興味d in やめる another 事柄.

'Ah yes! You 言及する to "Pelosia",' he said briskly. '許す me to read you an 抽出する from the prospectus.'

And before Pringle could reply he proceeded to read from a small ちらし with unctuous elocution:

'Pelosia. The 君主 治療（薬） of Mud has long been used with the greatest success in the celebrated baths of Schwalbach and Franzensbad. The proprietors of Pelosia having 公式文書，認めるd the 有益な 影響 which many of the lower animals derive from the 消費 of earth with their food, have been led to 調査／捜査する the 内部の uses of mud. The success which has 栄冠を与えるd the 治療 of some of the longest-standing 事例／患者s of dyspepsia (the 病気 so characteristic of this neurotic age), has induced them to 収容する／認める the world 捕まらないで to its 利益s. To 完全に 保護（する）／緊急輸入制限 the public, the proprietors have 安全な・保証するd the 単独の 権利 to the alluvial deposits of a stream remote from human habitation, and その結果 above any 疑惑 of 汚染. Careful 分析 has shown that the deposit in this particular locality, consisting of finely divided mineral 粒子s, 事実上 解放する／自由な from 有機の admixture, is calculated to give the most gratifying results. The proprietors are 用意が出来ている to 引用する special 条件 for public 会・原則s.'

'Many thanks,' said Pringle, as the other momentarily paused for breath; 'but I think you are under a slight misapprehension. I called on you with 言及／関連 to the "Assyrian Rejuvenator". Have I mistaken the offices?'

'Pray excuse my absurd mistake! I am 長官 of the "Assyrian Rejuvenator Company", who are also the proprietors of "Pelosia".' And in evident 関心 he regarded Pringle fixedly.

It was not the first time he had known a diffident person to assume an 利益／興味 in the senility of an absent friend, and he mentally decided that Pringle's waxed moustache, its blue-blackness speaking loudly of hair-dye, together with the unmistakable wig, were 証拠 of the decrepitude for which his new 顧客 推定では sought the Company's 援助.

'Ours, my dear sir,' he 再開するd, leaning 支援する in his 議長，司会を務める, and placing the tips of his fingers in apposition—'Ours is a world-renowned 明確な／細部 for 除去するing the 荒廃させるs which time 影響s in the human でっちあげる，人を罪に陥れる. It is a secret which has been 手渡すd 負かす／撃墜する for many 世代s in the family of the 初めの proprietor. Its success is frequently remarkable, and its 絶対の 失敗 is impossible. It is not a 麻薬, it is not a cosmetic, yet it 含む／封じ込めるs the 所有物／資産／財産s of both. It is agreeable and soothing to use, and 存在 best 治めるd during the hours of sleep does not 干渉する with the ordinary avocations of every-day life. The price is so 穏健な—ten and sixpence, 含むing the 政府 stamp—that it could only 証明する remunerative with an enormous sale. If you—ah, on に代わって of your friend!—would care to 購入（する） a 瓶／封じ込める, I shall be most happy to explain its 操作／手術.'

Mr Pringle laid a half 君主 and a sixpence on the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する, and the 長官, 飛び込み into a large packing-事例／患者 which stood on one 味方する, 抽出するd a 小包. This 含む／封じ込めるd a cardboard box adorned with a 代表 of Blake's preposterous illustration to 'The 墓／厳粛／彫る／重大な', in which a centenarian on crutches is hobbling into a 種類 of 銀行業者's strongroom with a rocky 最高の，を越す, whereon is seated a 青年 着せる／賦与するd in nothing, and with an ecstatic 表現.

'This,' said Mr Jacobs impressively, 'is the entire apparatus!' And he opened the box, 陳列する，発揮するing a 穏健な-sized phial and a spirit-lamp with a little tin dish 大（公）使館員d. 'On retiring to 残り／休憩（する）, a teaspoonful of the contents of the 瓶／封じ込める is 注ぐd into the receptacle above the lamp, which is then lighted, and the 準備 存在 vaporized is 吸い込むd by the 患者. It is best to concentrate the thoughts on some 反対する of beauty whilst the delicious aroma sooths the 患者 to sleep.'

'But how does it 行為／法令／行動する?' 問い合わせd the Major a trifle impatiently.

'In this way,' replied the imperturbable 長官. 'Remember that the 外見 of age is 大部分は 予定 to wrinkles; that is to say, to the 肌 losing its elasticity and fulness—so true is it that beauty is only 肌-深い.' Here he laughed gaily. 'The 共同のs grow stiff from loss of their natural トン, the 人物／姿／数字 stoops, and the 決定的な 組織／臓器s 拒絶する／低下する their 機能（する）／行事s from the same 原因（となる）. In a word, old age is 予定 to a loss of elasticity, and that is the very 所有物／資産／財産 which the "Rejuvenator" imparts to the system, if 吸い込むd for a few hours daily.'

Mr Pringle 外交上 後継するd in 持続するing his gravity while the 長所s of the "Rejuvenator" were expounded, and it was not until he had bidden Mr Jacobs a courteous 別れの（言葉，会）, and was 安全に outside the office, that he 許すd the fastening of his moustache to be 乱すd by an expansive grin.

About nine o'clock the same evening the housekeeper of the Barbican offices was returning from market, her thoughts centred on the savoury piece of fried fish she was carrying home for supper.

'Mrs Smith?' said a man's 発言する／表明する behind her, as she produced her latch-重要な.

'My 指名する's 'Odges,' she replied unguardedly, dropping the 重要な in her agitation.

'You're the housekeeper, aren't you?' said the stranger, 選ぶing up the 重要な and 手渡すing it to her politely.

'Lor', sir! You did give me a turn,' she 滞るd.

'Very sorry, I'm sure. I only want to know where I can find Mr Jacobs, of the "Assyrian Rejuvenator Company".'

'井戸／弁護士席, sir, he told me I wasn't to give his 演説（する）／住所 to anyone. Not that I know it either, sir, for I always send the letters to Mr Weeks.'

'I'll see you're not 設立する fault with. I know he won't mind your telling me.' A 君主 clinked against the latch-重要な in her palm.

For a second she hesitated, then her 注目する，もくろむ caught the glint of the gold, and she fell.

'All I know, sir, is that when Mr Jacobs is away I send the letters—and a rare lot there are—to Mr Newton Weeks, at the Northumberland Avenue Hotel.'

'Is he one of the 会社／堅い?'

'I don't know, sir, but there's no one comes here but Mr Jacobs.'

'Thank you very much, and good night,' said the stranger; and he strode 負かす／撃墜する Barbican, leaving Mrs Hodges 星／主役にするing at the coin in her 手渡す as if 疑問ing whether, like fairy gold, it might not disappear even as she gazed.

The next day Mr Jacobs received a letter at his hotel:

'April 7th

'Sir—My friend Col. Sandstream 知らせるs me he has communicated with the police, and has sworn an （警察などへの）密告，告訴（状） against you in 尊敬（する）・点 of the moneys you have 得るd from him, as he 主張するs, by 誤った pretences. Although I am 納得させるd that his 声明s are true, a fact which I can more readily しっかり掴む after my interview with you today, I give you this 警告 in order that you may make your escape before it is too late. Do not misunderstand my 動機s; I have not the slightest 願望（する） to save you from the 罰 you so richly deserve. I am 簡単に anxious to 救助（する） my old friend from the ridiculous position he will 占領する before the world should he 起訴する you.

Mr Jacobs read this 宣言 of war with very mixed feelings.

So his 訪問者 of yesterday was the friend of 陸軍大佐 Sandstream! 明白に come to get up 証拠 against him. Knowing old dog, that Sandstream! But then how had they run him to earth? That looked as if the police had got their fingers in the pie. Mrs Hodges was 控えめの. She would never have given the 演説（する）／住所 to any but the police. It was annoying, though, after all his 警戒s; seemed as if the game was really up at last. 井戸／弁護士席, it was bound to come some day, and he had been in tighter places before. He could hardly complain; the 'Rejuvenator' had been going very 井戸／弁護士席 lately. But suppose the whole thing was a 工場／植物—a dodge to 脅迫してさせる him?

He read the letter through again. The writer had been careful to omit his 演説（する）／住所, but it seemed plausible enough on the 直面する of it. Anyhow, whatever the major's real 動機 might be, he couldn't afford to neglect the 警告, and the one （疑いを）晴らす thing was that London was an unhealthy place for him just at 現在の. He would pack up, so as to be ready for all 緊急s, and 運動 一連の会議、交渉／完成する to Barbican and reconnoitre. Then, if things looked fishy, he could go to 大砲 Street and catch the 11.5 大陸の. He'd show them that Harry Jacobs wasn't the man to be bluffed out of his （人命などを）奪う，主張する!

Mr Jacobs stopped his cab some doors from the "Rejuvenator" office, and was in the 行為／法令／行動する of alighting when he paused, spellbound at the apparition of Pringle. The latter was loitering outside No. 82, and as the cab drew up he ostentatiously 協議するd a large pocket-調書をとる／予約する, and ちらりと見ることd several times from its pages to the countenance of his 犠牲者 as if comparing a description. Attired in a long overcoat, a bowler hat, and wearing 厚い boots of a constabulary pattern to the nervous imagination of Mr Jacobs, he afforded startling 証拠 of the police 利益／興味 in the 設立; and this idea was 確認するd when Pringle, as if 満足させるd with his scrutiny, drew a paper from the pocket-調書をとる／予約する and made a movement in his direction. Without waiting for その上の 開発s, Mr Jacobs 退却／保養地d into the cab and hoarsely whispered through the 罠（にかける）-door, '大砲 Street as hard as you can go!'

The cabman wrenched the horse's 長，率いる 一連の会議、交渉／完成する. He had been an 利益／興味d 観客 of the scene, and sympathised with the evident 願望（する） of his fare to escape what appeared to be the long arm of the 法律. At this moment a 'はうing' hansom （機の）カム up, and was 敏速に あられ／賞賛するd by Pringle.

'Follow that cab and don't lose it on any account!' he cried, as he stood on the step and pointed vigorously after the receding hansom.

While Mr Jacobs careered 負かす／撃墜する Barbican, his cabman looked 支援する in time to 観察する this expressive pantomime, and with the instinct of a true sportsman 攻撃するd the unfortunate brute into a 手渡す-gallop. But the observant 注目する，もくろむ of a policeman checked this 穏健な 展示 of 速度(を上げる） just as they were 一連の会議、交渉／完成するing the sharp corner into Aldersgate Street, and had not a 板材ing 鉄道 先頭 介入するd Pringle would have caught him up and brought the farce to an ぎこちない finish. But the 先頭 saved the 状況／情勢. The moment's 一時的休止，執行延期 was all that the chase needed, and in 返答 to the 約束s of largesse, frantically roared by Mr Jacobs through the 罠（にかける）-door, he was soon bounding and bumping over the 支持を得ようと努めるd pavement with Pringle 井戸／弁護士席 in the 後部.

Then 続いて起こるd a mad 殺到 負かす／撃墜する Aldersgate Street.

In and out, between the （人が）群がるd とじ込み／提出するs of 先頭s and 'buses, the two cabs 負傷させる a zig-zag course; the horses slipping and skating over the greasy surface, or ploughing up the mud as their bits skidded them within インチs of a 衝突／不一致. In vain did policemen roar to them to stop—the order fell on heedless ears. In vain did officious boys wave 脅迫してさせるing 武器, or make futile 得る，とらえるs at the harness of the 明らかな runaways. Did a cart dart 突然に from out a 味方する street, the 必然的な 災害 failed to come off. Did an 障害 ぼんやり現れる dead ahead of them, it melted into thin 空気／公表する as they approached. Triumphantly they 操縦するd the narrowest of 海峡s, and dashed 無傷の into St ツバメ's-le-Grand.

There was a 封鎖する in Newgate Street, and the cross traffic was stopped. Mr Jacobs' hansom nipped through a 一時的な gap, grazing the 政治家 of an omnibus, and 存在 lustily anathematised in the 過程. But Pringle's cabman, 試みる／企てるing to follow, was imperiously waved 支援する by a policeman.

'No go, I'm afraid, sir!' was the man's comment, as they crossed into St Paul's Churchyard after a three minutes' wait. 'I can't see him nowhere.'

'Never mind,' said Pringle cheerfully. 'Go to Charing Cross telegraph office.'

There he sent the に引き続いて message:

'To Mrs Hodges, 82, Barbican. Called away to country. Mr Weeks will take 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金 of office—Jacobs.'

About two the same afternoon, Pringle, wearing the wig and moustache of Major Parkins, rang the housekeeper's bell at 82.

'I'm Mr Weeks,' he 明言する／公表するd, as Mrs Hodges 現れるd from the bowels of the earth. 'Mr Jacobs has had to leave town, and has asked me to take 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金 of the office.'

'Oh yes, sir! I've had a 電報電信 from Mr Jacobs to say so. You know the way up, I suppose.'

'I think so. But Mr Jacobs forgot to send me the office 重要な.'

'I'd better lend you 地雷, then, sir, till you can hear from Mr Jacobs.' She fumbled in her voluminous pocket. 'I hope nothing's the 事柄 with him?'

'Oh dear no! He 設立する he needed a short holiday, that's all,' Pringle 安心させるd her, and taking the 重要な from the confiding woman he climbed to the second 床に打ち倒す.

Sitting 負かす／撃墜する at the secretarial desk, he sent a quick ちらりと見ること 一連の会議、交渉／完成する the office. A poor creature, that Jacobs, he 反映するd, for all his rascality, or he wouldn't have been 脅すd so easily. And he drew a piece of wax from his pocket and took a careful impression of the 重要な.

He had not been in 所有／入手 of the 'Rejuvenator' offices for very long before he discovered that Mr Jacobs' 願望（する） to 勃発する in a fresh place had 証明するd abortive. It will be remembered that on the occasion of his interview with that gentleman, Mr Jacobs assumed that Pringle's visit had 言及／関連 to 'Pelosia', whose virtues he extolled in a ちらし composed in his own very pronounced style. A large 一括 in the office Pringle 設立する to 含む／封じ込める many thousands of these effusions, which had 明らかに been laid aside for some かなりの time. From the absence in the daily correspondence of any 調査s thereafter, it was （疑いを）晴らす that the public had failed to realize the advantages of the 内部の 行政 of mud, so that Mr Jacobs had been 軍隊d to stick to the 搾取する that was already in 存在. After all, the latter was a 支払う／賃金ing 関心—eminently so! Besides, the 特許-薬／医学 貿易（する） is rather overdone.

The price of the 'Assyrian Rejuvenator' was such as to （判決などを）下す the 早期に cashing of remittances an 平易な 事柄. Ten-and-sixpence 存在 a sum for which the 普通の／平均（する） 銀行業者 demurs to honour a cheque, the 支払い（額）s were usually made in 郵便の orders; and Pringle acquired a larger 約束 in Carlyle's opinion of the 大多数 of his fellow-creatures as he cashed the previous day's takings at the General 地位，任命する Office on his way up to Barbican each morning. The 商売／仕事 was indeed a 繁栄するing one, and his satisfaction was only alloyed by the probability of some 合法的な 干渉，妨害, at the instance of 陸軍大佐 Sandstream, with the その上の 操作／手術s of the Company. But for the 現在の Fortune smiled, and Pringle continued energetically to despatch 小包s of the 'Rejuvenator' in 返答 to the daily にわか雨 of 郵便の orders. In this indeed he had little trouble, for he had 設立する many 甚だしい／１２ダース of 小包s duly packed and ready for 地位，任命するing.

One day while engaged in the 過程, which had grown やめる a mechanical one by that time, he listened absently to a slow but 決定するd step which 上がるd the stairs and paused on the 上陸 outside. Above, on the third 床に打ち倒す, was an importer of cigars made in Germany, and the 訪問者 evidently 延期するd the その上の climb until he had 回復するd his 勝利，勝つd. Presently, after a 予選 pant or two, he got under 重さを計る again, but proceeded only as far as the 'Rejuvenator' door, to which he gave a peremptory 強くたたく, and, 開始 it, walked in without その上の 儀式.

There was no need for him to 発表する himself. Pringle 認めるd him at first ちらりと見ること, although he had never seen him since the eventful evening at Cristiani's restaurant.

'I'm 陸軍大佐 Sandstream!' he growled, looking 一連の会議、交渉／完成する him savagely.

'Delighted to see you, sir,' said Pringle with 保証／確信. 'Pray be seated,' he 追加するd politely.

'Ah, yes! That's the 指名する. Where is he?' again interrupted the old gentleman.

'Mr Jacobs is at 現在の out of town.'

'井戸／弁護士席, I'm not going to run after him. When will he be here again?'

'It is やめる impossible for me to tell. But I was just now going to say that as the managing director of the company I am also 事実上の／代理 as 長官 during Mr Jacobs' absence.'

'What do you say your 指名する is?' 需要・要求するd the other, still ignoring the 議長，司会を務める which Pringle had 申し込む／申し出d him.

'Newton Weeks.'

'Newton Weeks,' repeated the 陸軍大佐, making a 公式文書，認める of the 指名する on the 支援する of an envelope.

'Managing director,' 追加するd Pringle suavely.

'井戸／弁護士席, Mr Weeks, if you 代表する the company—' this with a contemptuous ちらりと見ること from the middle of the room at his surroundings—'I've called with 言及／関連 to a letter you've had the impertinence to send me.'

'What was the date of it?' 問い合わせd Pringle innocently.

'I don't remember!' snapped the 陸軍大佐.

'May I ask what was the 支配する of the correspondence?'

'Why, this confounded "Rejuvenator" of yours, of course!'

'You see we have a very large 量 of correspondence 関心ing the "Rejuvenator", and I'm afraid unless you have the letter with you——'

'I've lost it or mislaid it somewhere.'

'That is unfortunate! Unless you can remember the contents I 恐れる it will be やめる impossible for me to do so.'

'I remember them 井戸／弁護士席 enough! I'm not likely to forget them in a hurry. I asked you to return me the money your "Rejuvenator", as you call it, has cost me, because it's been やめる useless, and in your reply you not only 辞退するd 絶対, but hinted that I dare not 起訴する you.'

As Pringle made no reply, he continued more savagely: 'Would you like to hear my candid opinion of you?'

'We are always pleased to hear the opinion of our （弁護士の）依頼人s.'

Pringle's calmness only appeared to exasperate the 陸軍大佐 the more.

'井戸／弁護士席, sir, you shall have it. I consider that letter the most impudent 試みる／企てる at ゆすり，恐喝 that I have ever heard of!' He ground out the words from between his clenched teeth in a 発言する／表明する of concentrated passion.

'ゆすり，恐喝!' echoed Pringle, 許すing an 表現 of horror to 占領する his countenance.

'Yes, sir! ゆすり，恐喝!' asseverated the 陸軍大佐, nodding his 長，率いる vigorously.

'Of course,' said Pringle, with a deprecating gesture, 'I am aware that some correspondence has passed between us, but I cannot 試みる／企てる to remember every word of it. At the same time, although you are pleased to put such an unfortunate construction upon it, I am sure there is some 誤解 in the 事柄. I must 前向きに／確かに 拒絶する／低下する to 収容する／認める that there has been any 試みる／企てる on the part of the company of such a nature as you 主張する.'

'Oh! so you don't 収容する／認める it, don't you? Perhaps you won't 収容する／認める taking 続けざまに猛撃するs and 続けざまに猛撃するs of my money for your absurd concoction, which hasn't done me the least little bit of good in the world—nor ever will! And perhaps you won't 収容する／認める 辞退するing to return me my money? Eh? Perhaps you won't 収容する／認める daring me to take 訴訟／進行s because it would show up what an ass I've been! Don't talk to me, sir! Haugh!'

'I'm really very sorry that this unpleasantness has arisen,' began Pringle, 'but——'

'Pleasant or unpleasant, sir, I'm going to stop your little game! I mislaid your letter or I'd have called upon you before this. As you're the managing director I'm better pleased to see you than your precious 長官. Anyhow, I've come to tell you that you're a 始める，決める of 詐欺師s! Of 詐欺師s, sir!'

'I can make every allowance for your feelings,' said Pringle, 製図／抽選 himself up with an 空気／公表する of 苦痛d dignity, 'but I 悔いる to see a 支えるもの／所有者 of His Majesty's （売買）手数料，委託（する）／委員会／権限 so deficient in self-支配（する）／統制する.'

Pringle followed in the 後部, and reached the outer door in time to hear him exclaim, 'Mansion House Police 法廷，裁判所,' to the driver of a モーター-cab, in which he 適切な clanked and rumbled out of sight.

Returning upstairs, Pringle busied himself in making a bonfire of the last few days' correspondence. Then, collecting the last （製品，工事材料の）一回分 of 郵便の orders, he proceeded to cash them at the General 地位，任命する Office, and walked 支援する to Furnival's Inn. After all, the farce couldn't have lasted much longer.

Arrived at Furnival's Inn, Pringle 速く divested himself of the wig and moustache, and, assuming his 公式の／役人 port-ワイン 示す, became once more the 失業した literary スパイ／執行官.

It was now half-past one, and, after lunching lightly at a 近づく restaurant, he lighted a cigar and strolled leisurely eastward.

By the time he reached Barbican three o'clock was reverberating from St Paul's. He entered the 私的な 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業 of a tavern nearly opposite, and sat 負かす／撃墜する by a window which 命令（する）d a 見解（をとる） of No. 82.

As time passed and the ４半期/4分の1s continued to strike in 早い succession, Pringle felt constrained to order その上の refreshment; and he was lighting a third cigar before his patience was rewarded. Mr Jacobs, for it was he, did not ーするつもりである to be caught napping this time.

About ten minutes after Mr Jacobs' 見えなくなる, the man who had looked out of the window 現れるd from the house and beckoned to the waiting cab. As he strolled 負かす／撃墜する the street, on a last visit to the General 地位，任命する Office, the two 探偵，刑事s passed him on their way 支援する in 追求（する），探索（する） of the 'Managing Director'.
