There is a 議会 in Jesus College the 存在 of which is probably known to few who are now 居住（者）, and より小数の still have 侵入するd into it or even seen its 内部の. It is on the 権利 手渡す of the 上陸 on the 最高の，を越す 床に打ち倒す of the precipitous staircase which for some forgotten story connected with it is 伝統的に called "Cow 小道／航路." The padlock which 安全な・保証するs its 大規模な oaken door is very rarely unfastened, for the room is 明らかにする and unfurnished. Once it served as a place of deposit for superfluous kitchen ware, but even that ignominious use has passed from it, and it is now left to undisturbed 孤独 and 不明瞭. For I should say that it is 完全に 削減（する） off from the light of the outer day by the 塀で囲むing up, some time in the eighteenth century, of its 選び出す／独身 window, and such light as ever reaches it comes from the door, when rare occasion 原因（となる）s it to be opened.

Yet at no extraordinarily remote day this 議会 has evidently ben tenanted, and, before it was given up to the 不明瞭, was comfortably fitted, によれば the 基準 of 慰安 which was known in college in the days of George II. There is still a roomy fireplace before which 脚s have been stretched and ワイン and gossip have 循環させるd in the days of wigs and brocade. For the room is spacious and, when it was lighted by the window looking eastward over the fields and ありふれた, it must have been a cheerful place for the sociable don.

Let me 明言する／公表する in 簡潔な／要約する, prosaic 輪郭（を描く） the circumstances which account for the gloom and 孤独 in which this room has remained now for nearly a century and a half.

In the second ４半期/4分の1 of the eighteenth century the University 所有するd a 広大な／多数の／重要な variety of clubs of a social 肉親，親類d. There were clubs in college parlours and clubs in 私的な rooms, or in inns and coffee-houses: clubs flavoured with politics, clubs clerical, clubs 趣旨ing to be learned and literary. Whatever their professed particularity, the 目的（とする） of each was convivial. Some of them, which 含むd undergraduates 同様に as 上級のs, were dissipated enough, and in their 限られた／立憲的な 地方の way aped the profligacy of such clubs as the Hell 解雇する／砲火／射撃 Club of London notoriety.

の中で these last was one which was at once more select and of more evil fame than any of its fellows. By a singular 事故, presently to be explained, the Minute 調書をとる／予約する of this Club, 含むing the years from 1738 to 1766, （機の）カム into the 手渡すs of the Master of Jesus College, and though, so far as I am aware, it is no longer extant, I have before me a transcript of it which, though it is in a 最近の handwriting, 現在のs in a bald 形態／調整 such a singular array of facts that I must ask you to 受託する them as veracious. The 初めの 調書をとる／予約する is 述べるd as a stout duodecimo 容積／容量 bound in red leather and fastened with red silken strings. The 令状ing in it 占領するd some 40 pages, and ended with the date November 2, 1766.

The Club in question was called the Everlasting Club--a 指名する 十分に explained by its 支配するs, 始める，決める 前へ／外へ in the pocket--調書をとる／予約する. Its number was 限られた／立憲的な to seven, and it would seem that its members were all young men, between 22 and 30. One of them was a Fellow-Commoner of Trinity: three of them were Fellows of Colleges, の中で whom I should 特に について言及する a Fellow of Jesus, 指名するd Charles Bellasis: another was a landed proprietor in the 郡, and the sixth was a young Cambridge 内科医. The 創立者 and 大統領 of the Club was the Honorable Alan Dermot, who, as the son of an Irish peer, had 得るd a nobleman's degree in the University, and lived in idleness in the town. Very little is known of his life and character, but that little is 高度に in his disfavor. He was killed in a duel in Paris in the year 1743, under circumstances which I need not particularise, but which point to an exceptional degree of cruelty and wickedness in the 殺害された man.

I will 引用する from the first page of the Minute 調書をとる／予約する some of the 法律s of the Club, which will explain its 憲法:---

"1. This Society consisteth of seven Everlastings, who may be Corporeal or Incorporeal, as 運命 may 決定するd.

2. The 支配するs of the Society, as herein written, are immutable and Everlasting.

3. 非，不，無 shall hereafter be chosen into the Society and 非，不，無 shall 中止する to be members.

4. The Honorable Alan Dermot is the Everlasting 大統領 of the Society.

5. The 上級の Corporeal Everlasting, not 存在 大統領, shall be the 長官 of the Society, and in the 調書をとる／予約する of Minutes shall 記録，記録的な／記録する its 処理／取引s, the date at which any Everlasting shall 中止する to be Corporeal, and all 罰金s 予定 to the Society. And when such 上級の Everlasting shall 中止する to be Corporeal he shall, either in person or by some sure 手渡す, 配達する this 調書をとる／予約する of Minutes to him who shall be next 上級の and at the time Corporeal, and he shall in like manner 記録，記録的な／記録する the 処理／取引s therein and 送信する／伝染させる it to the next 上級の. The neglect of these 準備／条項s shall be visited by the 大統領 with 罰金 or 罰 によれば his discretion.

6. On the Second day of November in every year, 存在 the Feast of All Souls, at ten o'clock 地位，任命する meridiem, the Everlastings shall 会合，会う at supper in the place of 住居 of that Corporeal member of the Society to whom it shall 落ちる in order of rotation to entertain them, and they shall all subscribe in this 調書をとる／予約する of Minutes their 指名するs and 現在の place of abode.

7. It shall be the 義務 of every Everlasting to be 現在の at the 年一回の entertainment of the Society, and 非，不，無 shall 主張する for excuse that he has not been 招待するd thereto. If any Everlasting shall fail to …に出席する the 年一回の 会合, or in his turn shall fail to 供給する entertainment for the Society, he shall be mulcted at the discretion of the 大統領.

8. にもかかわらず, if in any year, in the month of October and not いっそう少なく than seven days before the Feast of All Souls, the major part of the Society, that is to say, four at least, shall 会合，会う and 記録，記録的な／記録する in 令状ing in these Minutes that it is their 願望（する） that no entertainment be given in that year, then, notwithstanding the two 支配するs rehearsed, there shall be no entertainment in that year, and no Everlasting shall be mulcted on the ground of his absence."

The 残り／休憩（する） of the 支配するs are either too profane or too puerile to be 引用するd here. They 示す the 驚くべき／特命の／臨時の levity with which the members entered on their preposterous 義務s. In particular, to the omission of any 規則 as to the 伝達／伝染 of the Minute 調書をとる／予約する after the last Everlasting 中止するd to be "Corporeal," we 借りがある the 事故 that it fell into the 手渡すs of one who was not a member of the society, and the consequent 保護 of its contents to the 現在の day.

Low as was the 基準 of morals in all classes of the University in the first half of the eighteenth century, the 極悪の 反抗 of public decorum by the members of the Everlasting Society brought upon it the 厳しい 非難 of the 当局, and after a few years it was 事実上 解散させるd and its members banished from the University. Charles Bellasis, for instance, was 強いるd to leave the college, and, though he 保持するd his fellowship, he remained absent from it for nearly twenty years. But the minutes of the society 明らかにする／漏らす a more terrible 推論する／理由 for its 事実上の 絶滅.

Between the years of 7138 and 1743 the minutes 記録，記録的な／記録する many 会合s of the Club, for it met on other occasions besides that of All Souls Day. Apart from a 広大な／多数の／重要な 取引，協定 of impious jocularity on the part of the writers, they are 限られた／立憲的な to the formal 記録，記録的な／記録する of the 出席 of the members, 罰金s （打撃，刑罰などを）与えるd, and so 前へ／外へ, The 会合 on November 2nd in the latter year is the first about which there is any 出発 from the stereotyped forms. The supper was given in the house of the 内科医. One member, Henry Davenport, the former Fellow-Commoner of Trinity, was absent from the entertainment, as he was then serving in Germany, in the Dettingen （選挙などの）運動をする. The minutes 含む／封じ込める an 入ること／参加（者）, "Mulctatus propter absentiam per Presidentem, 女／おっせかい屋. Davenport." An 入ること／参加（者） on the next page of the 調書をとる／予約する runs, "Henry Davenport by a 大砲-発射 became an Incorporeal Member, November 3, 1743."

The minute give in their handwriting, under date November 2, the 指名するs and 演説（する）／住所s of the six other members. First in the 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる）, in a large bold 手渡す, is the autograph of "Alan Dermot, 大統領, at the 法廷，裁判所 of His 王室の Highness." Now in October Dermot had certainly been in 出席 on the Young Pretender at Paris, and doubtless the 演説（する）／住所 which he gave was understood at the time by the other Everlastings to 言及する to the fact. But on October 28, five days before the 会合 of the Club, he was killed, as I have already について言及するd, in a duel. The news of his death cannot have reached Cambridge on November 2, for the 長官's 記録，記録的な／記録する of it is placed below that of Davenport, and with the date of November 10: "this day was 報告（する）／憶測d that the 大統領，／社長 was become an Incorporeal by the 手渡すs of a french chevalier." And in a sudden ebullition, which is in glaring contrast with his previous profanities, he has dashed 負かす／撃墜する, "The Good God 保護物，者 us from ill."

The tidings of the 大統領's death scattered the Everlastings like a thunderbolt. They left Cambridge and buried themselves in 広範囲にわたって parted 地域s. But the Club did not 中止する to 存在する. The 長官 was still bound to his hateful 記録，記録的な／記録するs: the five 生存者s did not dare to neglect their 致命的な 義務s. Horror of the presence of the 大統領 made the November 集会 once and for ever impossible: but the horror, too, forbade them to neglect the 会合 in October of every year to put in 令状ing their 反対 to the 祝賀. For five years five 指名するs are appended to that 入ること／参加（者） in the minutes, and that is all the 商売／仕事 of the Club. Then another member died, who was not the 長官.

For eighteen more years four 哀れな men met once each year to 配達する the same formal 抗議する. During those years we gather from the 署名s that Charles Bellasis returned to Cambridge, now, to 外見, chastened and decorous. He 占領するd the rooms which I have 述べるd on the staircase on the corner of the cloister.

Then in 1766 comes a new handwriting and an altered minute: "Jan. 27, on this day Francis Witherington, 長官, became an incorporeal member. The same day this 調書をとる／予約する was 配達するd to me, James Harvey." Harvey lived only a month, and a 類似の 入ること／参加（者） on March 7 明言する／公表するs that the 調書をとる／予約する has descended, with the same mysterious celerity, to William Catherton. Then, on May 18, Charles Bellasis 令状s that on that day, 存在 the day of Catherton's decease, the Minute 調書をとる／予約する has come to him as the last 生き残るing Corporeal of the Club.

As it is my 目的 to 記録，記録的な／記録する fact only I shall not 試みる／企てる to 述べる the feelings of the unhappy 長官 when he penned that 致命的な 記録，記録的な／記録する. When Witherington died it must have come home to the three 生存者s that after twenty-three years' intermission the 恐ろしい entertainment must be 毎年 新たにするd, with the 新規加入 of fresh incorporeal guests, or that they must を受ける the pitiless 非難 of the 大統領. I think it likely that the terror of the 代案／選択肢, coupled with the mysterious 配達／演説／出産 of the Minute 調書をとる／予約する, was 責任のある for the 迅速な decease of the first two 後継者s to the Secretaryship. Now that the 代案／選択肢 was 申し込む／申し出d to Bellasis alone, he was 堅固に 解決するd to 耐える the consequences, whatever they might be, of an 違反 of the Club 支配するs.

The graceless days of George II. had passed away from the University. They were 後継するd by times of outward respectability, when 宗教 and morals were no longer 公然と challenged. With Bellasis, too, the petulance of 青年 had passed: he was 控えめの, perhaps 模範的な. The スキャンダル of his 早期に 行為／行う was unknown to most of the new 世代, 容赦するd by the few 生存者s who had 証言，証人／目撃するd it.

On the night of November 2nd, 1766, a terrible event 生き返らせるd in the older inhabitants of the College the memory of those evil days. From ten o'clock to midnight a hideous uproar went on in the 議会 of Bellasis. Who were his companions 非，不，無 knew. Blasphemous 激しい抗議s and ribald songs, such as had not been heard for twenty years past, 誘発するd from sleep or 熟考する／考慮する the occupants of the 法廷，裁判所; but の中で the 発言する／表明するs was not that of Bellasis. At twelve a sudden silence fell upon the cloisters. But the Master lay awake all night, troubled at the relapse of a 尊敬（する）・点d 同僚 and the horrible example of libertinism 始める，決める to his pupils.

In the morning all remained 静かな about Bellasis' 議会. When his door was opened, soon after daybreak, the 早期に light creeping through the drawn curtains 明らかにする／漏らすd a strange scene. About the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する were drawn seven 議長，司会を務めるs, but some of them had been overthrown, and the furniture was in 大混乱／混沌とした disorder, as after some wild orgy. In the 議長，司会を務める at the foot of the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する sat the lifeless 人物／姿／数字 of the 長官, his 長，率いる bent over his 倍のd 武器, as though he would 保護物，者 his 注目する，もくろむs from some horrible sight. Before him on the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する lay pen, 署名／調印する and the red Minute 調書をとる／予約する. On the last inscribed page, under the date of November 2nd, were written, for the first time since 1742, the autographs of the seven members of the Everlasting Club, but without 演説（する）／住所. In the same strong 手渡す in which the 大統領's 指名する was written there was appended below the 署名s the 公式文書，認める "Mulctus per Presidentem propter neglectum obsonii, Car. Bellasis."

The Minute 調書をとる／予約する was 安全な・保証するd by the Master of the College and I believe that he alone was 熟知させるd with the nature of its contents. The スキャンダル 反映するd on the College by the circumstances 明らかにする／漏らすd in it 原因（となる）d him to keep the knowledge rigidly to himself. But some 疑惑 of the nature of the occurrences must have percolated to students and servants, for there was a long-がまんするing belief in the College that 毎年 on the night of November 2 sounds of unholy revelry were heard to 問題／発行する from the 議会 of Charles Bellasis. I cannot learn that the occupants of the 隣接するing rooms have ever been 乱すd by them. Indeed, it is plain from the minutes that 借りがあるing to their improvident 草案ing no 準備／条項 was made for the perpetuation of the All Souls entertainment after the last Everlasting 中止するd to Corporeal. Such superstitious belief must be 扱う／治療するd with contemptuous incredulity. But whether for that 原因（となる） of another the rooms were shut up, and have remained tenantless from that day to this.
