COMMONPLACE in itself and showing 肯定的な vulgarity in the style in which its 楽しみ-grounds are laid out, Clyffe, 近づく Berwick-on-Tweed, has yet one delightful feature of its own,--to wit, a 私的な bay to which 接近 is 得るd by a tunnel seventy or eighty yards long, 削減（する） through the soft 形式 of the cliff from the sloping gardens above. The result is that, if you are a 訪問者 at Clyffe, you have your own 私的な bathing ground, your own 私的な beach where the children may play, without 恐れる of 存在 encroached upon, unless, indeed, a boat should be run in の中で the 激しく揺するs from seaward. In the 早期に nineties of the last century, the only daughter of the house of Clyffe was engaged to be married to a young officer ４半期/4分の1d at the 軍の 倉庫・駅 at Berwick. They were a blameless but not 特に 利益／興味ing couple, and one of their hobbies was to 会合，会う and promenade on the smooth sands of Clyffe bay in the brilliant autumn moonlight. ーするために 妨げる possible 侵入占拠 from the sea, the seaward end of the tunnel was の近くにd by a 激しい アイロンをかける gate, and upon the inner 味方する of this gate the 中尉／大尉／警部補 was to wait until his fiancee should steal 前へ／外へ bringing with her the 重要な which should give 接近 to the beach. It was all very foolish and romantic, no 疑問, for they might have met just as conveniently in the 温室 of Clyffe House, where their privacy would have been 平等に 尊敬（する）・点d, and where 行方不明になる Alix's satin shoes and diaphanous draperies would have exposed her to no 危険 of a 冷気／寒がらせる. Lovers are like that, however, and had they not been so on this occasion, I should have had no story to tell.

Like the 模範的な swain he was, 刑事 arrived 早期に at the rendezvous,--that is to say, 早期に in 尊敬（する）・点 to the time agreed upon, though, as a 事柄 of fact, it was nearly eleven o'clock. There he lit a cigarette, and approaching the 激しい アイロンをかける 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業s of the locked gate, looked 前へ／外へ upon the 平和的な scene beyond. It was a perfect night, the 収穫 moon riding through fleecy cloud aloft, whilst the breaking of the sea between the rocky points to 権利 and left was soothing in its gentle iteration. 刑事 had been on parade 極端に 早期に that morning, and, tell it not in Gath! his 注目する，もくろむs involuntarily の近くにd. Starting awake again, he saw with surprise that, though Alix had not yet come 今後, he was no longer alone. No! the sacred beach had been 侵略するd, and a 女性（の） 人物／姿／数字 覆う？ in light draperies was pacing slowly in the moonlight betwixt himself and the distant 激しく揺するs. Who on earth could she be, and how had she got there? were the questions he asked himself, his first sensation 存在 one of annoyance at so 予期しない and so ill-timed an 侵入占拠. But as the moments passed and the 人物／姿／数字 （機の）カム more 明確に into 見解（をとる）, impatience gave way to curiosity, and curiosity to something like awe.

What he saw was the tall and slender form of a young girl whose 手渡すs were clasped in 前線 of her, and whose 注目する，もくろむs were 直す／買収する，八百長をするd on the ground in a pensive, not to say sorrowful, 態度. （疑いを）晴らす as was the moonlight, at least in the intervals of the moon's passage through the broken clouds, her features were not plainly 明白な; but her every movement was instinct with grace. What could she be doing there? Under other circumstances, かもしれない 刑事 might have felt inclined to pass the gate and himself step 前へ／外へ on to the sands. But, besides that the gate was locked, he 徐々に became conscious of a singular delicacy or 不本意 to intrude upon the privacy of this 独房監禁, inexplicable, and impressive 人物／姿／数字. He was content, therefore, to watch her noiseless 進歩, and, as he did so, even his untrained masculine 注目する，もくろむ seemed to 公式文書，認める something unusual--out of date, it might be--in the fashion of her 衣料品s. So perhaps might some old-world portrait have appeared, had it stept 負かす／撃墜する from its でっちあげる，人を罪に陥れる against the 塀で囲む. This, however, stirred him little. What he was not 用意が出来ている for was the gesture of anguish, nay, of 肯定的な despair, with which, when about opposite him, the 人物／姿／数字 threw her 長，率いる 支援する and her 武器 aloft, as if in mute and agonised 控訴，上告 to Heaven. The 活動／戦闘 was heartrending even to look on; nor, to a male 注目する，もくろむ, did it lose aught from the fact that, as the moonlight now fell for the first time on her 上昇傾向d 直面する, it showed it to be deathly pale indeed, but also exquisitely lovely. Another moment or two, and the graceful and 控訴，上告ing form had passed beyond his field of 見通し, for, as the locked gate stood some little way 支援する from the mouth of the tunnel, his 見解（をとる） was 制限するd.

A short time only, though he knew not 正確に／まさに how long, had passed when Alix stood beside him.

"I had some difficulty," she archly explained, "in eluding 調査するing 注目する，もくろむs."

For an ardent lover, 刑事's greetings were perfunctory; after which, 存在 still powerfully under the impression of what he had just seen, he told Alix all about it.

"We shall soon see who she is," replied that practical young lady, as she placed the 激しい 重要な in the cumbrous lock, "and I shall also take leave to 知らせる her that this bit of coast is 厳密に 私的な."

And 厳密に 私的な it appeared to be when they 現れるd from the tunnel. For though their 注目する，もくろむs swept the beach to 権利 and left, and though the moon just then was unobscured, they saw no trace of any living form.

"She must have landed from a boat," said Alix; but as little trace of a boat could they discover.

Still it was やめる possible that she might pass unobserved against the dark 激しく揺するs, so they turned first to the 権利, then to the left, keeping a keen look-out for any 調印する of 動議.

They （悪事，秘密などを）発見するd nothing.

And by this time I am bound to 自白する that a わずかに uncomplimentary 疑惑 had more than once crossed the brain of Alix. She knew that, as a 支配する, her 刑事 was a pattern of moderation. But even the most 慎重な may be liable to be occasionally overtaken. And she 解任するd his having について言及するd that this was to be a guest-night at the mess. Indeed, it was 主として upon that account that the assignation had been 直す／買収する，八百長をするd so late. This 現在の portentous solemnity was certainly most unlike him. Was it possible that the poor fellow had taken just one more whisky-and-soda than he could conveniently carry? Outspoken by nature, she blurted out her 疑惑, which was 強化するd rather than the 逆転する by the 広大な／多数の／重要な earnestness with which he repelled it.

いっそう少なく 納得させるd than before, Alix then exclaimed: "Look here, 刑事! If, as you say, the young woman passed this way, she must have left 跡をつけるs on the smooth sand. Where do you say the place was?"

With some 不確定, 刑事 then led her to what he took to be the place. No 跡をつけるs were there. He then tried その上の 支援する from the mouth of the tunnel, and with as little success. It was true the tide was coming up, but it could scarcely yet have reached footmarks which had been imprinted so far inshore as he supposed these to have been.

In a spirit of levity which jarred on him, Alix now recommended her lover to go 支援する to his ４半期/4分の1s and have a good sleep; and then, having again passed through the gate and 押し進めるd their way up the tunnel, the two young people parted in something very like a 争い.

刑事 did not call at Clyffe House the next day, and when he called on the day に引き続いて, Alix met him in a complaisant mood. After all, she had no wish to quarrel with him. And very soon she said, "Going 支援する to what you told me you had seen the other night, 刑事, it occurred to me, after you were gone, that it fits in rather curiously with an old story connected with this place." And then, at his request, she proceeded to tell him how, some thirty years ago, her grandmother had had a favourite maid, a friendless 孤児 girl 指名するd Barbara, to whom 大（公）使館員d a mystery. Barbara was a very lovely creature of refinement and education above her 駅／配置する, and she had of course 非常に／多数の admirers. Young as she was, her discretion was faultless, with the 単独の exception that her native amiability and 願望（する） to please いつかs betrayed her into 行為／行う which meant いっそう少なく than her admirers wished to think it did. 井戸／弁護士席, at last Barbara became 苦境d to a respectable young fisherman, part-owner of a boat sailing from The Greenses, and, though 詳細（に述べる）s were vague, it was 一般に understood that, as a consequence, several hearts were 厳しく 損失d. As Barbara had no 親族s, it was arranged by her 雇用者 that she should remain in her 状況／情勢 until the wedding-day and should be married from Clyffe House. かなりの 準備s had also been made to do honour to the occasion, when--裁判官 of the びっくり仰天 of the inmates of the house!--upon the morning of the wedding-day Barbara was not to be 設立する. She was believed to have retired to 残り／休憩（する） on the previous night as usual, yet her bed had not been slept in. Nor, although most of her 着せる／賦与するs were packed in 予期 of her change of 住所／本籍, had she 明らかに taken anything with her. Nothing in the least unusual had been 観察するd in her demeanour; nor could the unhappy bridegroom 示唆する any possible 動機 for her 行為／行う. Exhaustive 調査s and exhaustive search were made; but, to 削減（する） the story short, nothing had ever again been seen or heard of the fair Barbara to that day. Her mistress, who had been 心から 大（公）使館員d to her, had long 嘆く／悼むd for her, and in after times would often sing her 賞賛するs. But, in order to be やめる candid, it must be 定評のある that there were others, not a few, who 拒絶する／低下するd to believe that the girl had come to an untimely end; and, who, knowing that she had several suitors, and had いつかs appeared uncertain which to favour, preferred to think that she had changed her mind at the last moment, and, deciding to throw over her fisherman, had made her escape from Clyffe House during the night to join some more 適格の swain. This would have been a desperate step indeed; nor could her 行為／行う in 保留するing その後の explanations be absolved of heartlessness. But, after all, she was the sort of girl who, where no actual 不品行／姦通 was 伴う／関わるd, might easily 許す herself to be over-説得するd. And certainly the 絡まるd skein of love does いつかs 現在の a knot which must be 削減（する） rather than untied.

The 中尉／大尉／警部補 professed himself profoundly 利益／興味d in this narrative, which he and Alix then proceeded to discuss in all its bearings, and more 特に, of course, in its relation to the 人物／姿／数字 seen by him in the cove. It is true that Alix never やめる believed in the genuineness of the apparition; but, seeing that 刑事 really wished to have it taken 本気で, she decided tactfully to humour him, and made やめる a nine days' wonder of the mysterious occurrence. Their own wedding-day was, however, 急速な／放蕩な 製図／抽選 on, so they soon 設立する other things to talk and think of. To be 簡潔な／要約する, they were in 予定 course married, and, まっただ中に the cares and 楽しみs of wedded life, the story, though not forgotten, （機の）カム to be very seldom referred to. So twenty years passed; at the end of which time the 陸軍大佐 (as he now was), …を伴ってd by his wife and several youngsters, paid one of his not very たびたび（訪れる） visits to his wife's parents at Clyffe House.

On the first night of the visit, after dinner, Alix's father had 意味ありげに 解任するd the story of the maid Barbara's 見えなくなる, and, after 明言する／公表するing that the mystery had now been finally （疑いを）晴らすd up, had gone on to relate the に引き続いて particulars:--A few days 以前 there had lain at the point of death in the infirmary at Berwick an 老年の fisherman, who had long been known in the seaport town for his 独房監禁 habits and morose and violent ways. As death drew 近づく, it became evident that his mind was sorely troubled, and to one of the nurses or doctors who had sought to 慰安 him he had been led to make the acknowledgment that a 有罪の secret 重さを計るd upon his soul, making him fearful to 直面する his 製造者. He then told how, as a young man, he had passionately loved a pretty servant-girl 雇うd at Clyffe House. Misled by those smiles and that graciousness of manner which in the guileless amiability of her nature the girl lavished upon all alike, he had for a moment imagined himself her favoured suitor. How bitter, then, was the blow, and how rude the awakening when he learned that a younger brother of his own, a mere boy, was preferred before himself! Nor was it only unrequited love that grieved him. No, he believed, or managed to 説得する himself, that an 不公平な advantage had been taken of him, by which he had been made the lovers' dupe. A silent man, he took no one into his 信用／信任, but abode his time until the eve of the wedding-day. On that day he had accidentally 迎撃するd a 公式文書，認める from the girl Barbara, 演説（する）／住所d to his brother, in which she had agreed to 会合，会う her bridegroom of the morrow in the cove below Clyffe House one hour before midnight, to spend a final hour together before the momentous 危機 in their lives. 即時に it had occurred to the 年上の brother to use the knowledge 伸び（る）d from the 公式文書，認める ーするために make one last desperate 控訴，上告 on his own account to the 甘い girl he loved so madly. Accordingly he kept 支援する the missive, and, to make 保証／確信 doubly sure, mixed a soporific 麻薬 with his brother's drink when the latter （機の）カム in from fishing. Then, whilst the youngster slumbered ひどく, he himself 乗る，着手するd in a cockle-boat and, unobserved, 列／漕ぐ／騒動d 静かに 一連の会議、交渉／完成する the headland, into Clyffe cove, where he ran his boat into a 安全な creek he knew of, and jumped 岸に. Poor Barbara had come 負かす／撃墜する to the water's 辛勝する／優位 to 会合，会う the boat, and 広大な／多数の／重要な was her びっくり仰天 on finding herself 直面するd by the wrong brother.

Then an 情熱的な scene was 制定するd, in which the 船員 used every means of 説得／派閥 known to him to get the girl to give up his brother and 苦境 herself to him. But though alternately 苦しめるd and terrified, Barbara had stood her ground, and, gentle and 産する／生じるing though she appeared to be, neither 脅しs nor 公約するs had had the slightest 影響 upon her constancy. And then, of a sudden, the 無謀な brother had "seen red." If he could not have this girl to wife, then neither should another, and a moment later her white form lay stretched upon the dark 激しく揺するs at his feet.

The sight brought him to himself. There was no room for 疑問 that life was extinct; and if he was to escape 疑惑, he must 行為／法令／行動する at once, for the summer night was short and the dread interview had lasted long. He accordingly placed the 団体／死体 in the boat, and, having collected several 激しい 石／投石するs, proceeded to make use of his seacraft by binding them closely and 堅固に about the poor girl's 団体／死体 by means of her 着せる／賦与するing. Then he 列／漕ぐ／騒動d out to sea, some mile or more, and there 静かに dropped the 団体／死体 overboard. Such, in 必須のs, was the story told by the dying fisherman, and so it had come about that the bride of that 致命的な morning was never seen or heard of more. Though かもしれない ーするつもりであるd to be regarded as confidential, 確かな it is that the 自白 had 漏れるd out, and very soon became public 所有物／資産／財産. For a few days it attracted 広大な／多数の／重要な attention; and then, like other more important things which had に先行するd it, it 中止するd, save very occasionally, to be alluded to at all. But the 陸軍大佐 never forgot it, any more than he ever forgot the lovely and inexplicable 見通し which had appeared to him for so 簡潔な／要約する an interval, in the moonlight, on the shore below Clyffe House. It is true that he seldom referred to it. Nor did that stately dame, who had once been 行方不明になる Alix and who was now believed to 命令（する） the 連隊, encourage him to do so. For she had 観察するd that he was always most ready to tell the story after an exceptionally good dinner. And, with her high sense of what was 予定 to his 階級, she fancied that it made him mildly ridiculous. Neither, it might be, had her earliest 疑問s been ever wholly laid to 残り／休憩（する）. But members of the fair sex, when they are practical, are apt to be very practical indeed.
