LIEUTENANT DON KEMP stood with his 手渡すs clenched in 冷淡な fury. His rooms, 含むing the 詳細な計画 draughting office, appeared to be in perfect order. But Don Kemp's 正確な, 整然とした mind and 注目する,もくろむ told him that his 4半期/4分の1s had been 完全に ransacked, although every article 明らかに had been 回復するd to its place.
From habit Don Kemp's 予定する gray 注目する,もくろむs went to the unusual "pin-up girl" on the 塀で囲む above his 製図/抽選 (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する. His 注目する,もくろむs became colder and he uttered an 誓い through clenched teeth.
Now the pin-up girl certainly was not such as to 誘発する the 怒り/怒る of a red 血d 中尉/大尉/警部補 of army engineers. The scanty sarong of the pin-up picture 証明するd that she had everything the most 差別するing male might 需要・要求する, from her 集まりd golden hair to slender ankles and tiny feet.
"Smile, 爆破 you, smile!" 爆発するd Kemp audibly. "So my shy, little Tina will be far from the old home town tonight. Yeah! In person! To show off her pin-up charms to all the other boys of the steenth engineer 軍団! An' I placed you special, before I 設立する out half the wolves in the company had the same picture!
In the 合間, my dear Tina, besides bringing 甘い dreams to a whole pack of wolves, you've been faithfully guarding the 計画(する)s which may alter the whole 結果 of the war and 縮める its time."
The 中尉/大尉/警部補 engineer spoke with 信用/信任. For it appeared obvious that the 最近の 空き巣ねらい had been 捜し出すing other 価値のあるs, or, if the 戦車/タンク prints was the 客観的な, it had been 行方不明になるd. さもなければ two rooms overlooking the white beach and the 大西洋 would not have been so 完全に searched.
"My beloved Tina!" he muttered again through 始める,決める teeth, as he touched the 明らかに immovable and pasted 黒人/ボイコット cardboard and it slid to one 味方する. "Tina who has become the pet of the engineers, and who—"
The come-on 注目する,もくろむs of the golden-haired girl still seemed to be watching him as the 黒人/ボイコット background slid to one 味方する. Her 直す/買収する,八百長をするd smile was 不変の even as Kemp bit off his words, jerked a 手渡す to the 塀で囲む, and then started 断言するing low and 刻々と.
"Gone?" His gasped exclamation was a question, as if he could not believe it "Gone! They've got the 戦車/タンク 計画(する)s!"
THE 塀で囲む 安全な he himself had 任命する/導入するd behind the cardboard of the pin-up girl had a 事情に応じて変わる door. He saw that its combination had been solved by an 専門家. The 詳細な計画s 決定的な to all of the 実験(する)s now 存在 carried on by the --th 軍団 were in 外国人 手渡すs.
Don Kemp slipped the pin-up girl 支援する into place instinctively as he heard footsteps outside his door. Ragged 神経s sent his 手渡す fumbling at his revolver holster. The thieving 秘かに調査する would scarcely be returning, but Kemp's brain was seething that such a 窃盗 could have been 遂行するd.
He was compelled to 解任する that there were 非軍事の 従業員s about the big beach hotel given over to the 工学 部隊. Of course, all had been checked and 二塁打-checked for 忠義. But this war had developed some strange and dangerous enemies, even の中で those who could 証明する American birth.
When the steps 停止(させる)d and there was a quick 非難する at the door, Don Kemp said, "Come in!"
Red-長,率いるd, 一連の会議、交渉/完成する-直面するd "脚s" McCarthy, the 軍団 photographer, 押し進めるd his good-natured countenance into the 割れ目 of the door. Don Kemp was still standing under the 取って代わるd pin-up girl, his lean 直面する darkened by his scowl of 疑惑 and 激怒(する).
McCarthy was the only man in the outfit who (機の)カム from Kemp's small home town of Centerville. The カメラマン's 直面する 割れ目d into a 幅の広い grin as he saw Kemp's position and the 嵐/襲撃する of 怒り/怒る in his 注目する,もくろむs.
"宗教上の gosh, Don!" exclaimed McCarthy, neglecting any formal salute. "You still burnin' up over Tina winnin' that big pin-up girl contest an' gettin' her picture in the papers an' pinned up all over the place? Jeeminee! An' with Captain Morgan's girl all out for you! I'd think you'd know that most of the gals that 約束d to wait have been spreading that same hooey around to—"
"Shut up, 脚s!" exclaimed Kemp with an intensity of 怒り/怒る that rubbed off McCarthy's smile. "You been upstairs long? An' if so, did you see anyone—?"
Don Kemp checked his own 激怒(する)ing speech. It had come to him that the first 報告(する)/憶測 of the 戦車/タンク 計画(する)s 窃盗 must be made to the C. O. Just as quickly it 夜明けd upon him that he did not ーするつもりである to make that 報告(する)/憶測 at once. Not until he had done some 調査/捜査するing on his own, while the 秘かに調査する and どろぼう might still be unaware that the 窃盗 had been discovered.
McCarthy slowly 回復するd his grin.
"Sure, I saw someone who might have come calling with the proper 護衛する, Don," he said with a little laugh in his 発言する/表明する. "You 行方不明になるd seeing her then? She's here already for the big show downstairs tonight. And I happen to know she asked Captain Morgan if she could see 中尉/大尉/警部補 Don Kemp. That's why I'm here. Tina—"
"Tina?" grated Kemp. "I'm not seeing her. And I'm not seeing the show either."
"Look, Don," 推論する/理由d McCarthy. "I'm the only guy in the outfit that knows the now famous pin-up girl, Tina Layton, is also your sweetheart. I know you were to be married, and that you mailed 支援する her letters unopened after this pin-up publicity (機の)カム out a month ago. Show some sense, Don."
DON KEMP ちらりと見ることd at the red glow from the sun going 負かす/撃墜する over the Everglades. Dusk and 不明瞭 would settle within a few short minutes over Biscayne Bay and Miami Beach.
脚s McCarthy stood there uncertainly. It was like this. Tina Layton, small towner from Centerville, the girl he had ーするつもりであるd to marry since high school days, had become a Big Town celebrity. All because of shapely 脚s and other proper 割合s.
Tina Layton had gone to Chicago. She had come out first in a 無線で通信する "pin-up girl" contest. Don Kemp's memory of her was of a shy, 甘い little blonde who had kissed him ardently and 約束d she would be waiting.
There was a newspaper column clipping in his wallet. One of the 最新の. It read—
BOBBY LANE, PLAYBOY, ALL OUT FOR PIN-UPPER Bobby 小道/航路, of the tungsten millions, is 存在 seen around with Tina, the BYT 無線で通信する pin-up 勝利者. One more matrimonial splurge seems to be in the 沖. Tina, the pin-up girl, will make a 小旅行する of the (軍の)野営地,陣営s where her saronged person has become 井戸/弁護士席 known by photos colored to life. Bobby will 追跡する along.
中尉/大尉/警部補 Don Kemp 答える/応じるd to 脚s McCarthy's advice. In the movie-vaudeville entertainment tonight, Tina Layton was to be featured in person. Kemp did not 願望(する) to see Tina in person. He had compelled his surface emotions to believe that was over.
In showing some sense, Kemp said, "Get out, 脚s. I've work to do. I'm afraid I'll be too busy to be 現在の in person at tonight's blowout. Have a good time, and if Tina 会談 to you, give her my best wishes."
That was 冷淡な and McCarthy's smile slowly died. Kemp's トン had a かみそり 辛勝する/優位. He was fighting 支援する 涙/ほころびing emotions that 主張するd upon trying to choke his 発言する/表明する.
There was the 窃盗 of the 戦車/タンク 詳細な計画s. Kemp had learned that the 悪名高い Bobby 小道/航路 was …を伴ってing the show. Kemp could take it on the chin, he believed. But he was not making a public 成果/努力 at 証明するing it.
"Okay, pal," grunted 脚s McCarthy, and の近くにd the door.
Kemp 審議d 簡潔に. He gave the rooms the quick once-over. He was tempted to pull 負かす/撃墜する the pin-up girl's picture and 涙/ほころび it into bits. But he had to show the C. O., Captain Morgan, 正確に/まさに how the 秘かに調査する 強盗 had been committed.
急速な/放蕩な 半分-熱帯の 不明瞭 was の近くにing in on the dimmed-out beach and Collins Avenue. Kemp switched on lights and checked the rooms.
"That's queer," he said musingly. "The only other thing 行方不明の is the Spanish dagger."
He had used the sharp, thin-bladed dagger as a 道具 for point 場内取引員/株価 on the 詳細な計画 desk. The dagger had a duplicate.
Don Kemp passed perhaps ten minutes in self 審議. 規則s called for an 即座の 報告(する)/憶測 of the loss of the 詳細な計画s. He was 納得させるd he was 存在 watched.
"The どろぼう would know when I 報告(する)/憶測d to Captain Morgan," he 推論する/理由d aloud. "But if I don't 報告(する)/憶測 and appear unconcerned, the 秘かに調査する may think I have not yet 設立する out about the 強盗."
A thought 大打撃を与えるd in the 支援する of his mind. He alone had planned that 塀で囲む 安全な behind the picture of the pin-up girl. No other member of the engineer 軍団, 含むing 脚s McCarthy, knew of its 存在.
But when it was 存在 contrived, and while Tina Layton was still the small town girl waiting for him, he had confided in her. That had been on one of his 簡潔な/要約する furloughs 支援する in Centerville.
Kemp had been given no furlough since that time. The 戦車/タンク traction 計画(する) was considered too important. It was a hard, a mean and a sickening thought that now 続けざまに猛撃するd at his brain.
DETERMINED to 避ける the 愛国的な entertainment for the engineers in the hotel ballroom, Don Kemp knew he must appear as usual. The elevator dropped him ten 床に打ち倒すs. The 非軍事の 操作者 was a colored man who grinned at him.
Kemp decided he must not ask questions. He strolled from the elevator through the ロビー. He met Mary Morgan, as if she had been waiting for him to appear. She smiled and her dark 注目する,もくろむs looked up at him.
"What gives, Don?" said Captain Morgan's vivacious girl child. "The show's starting soon, and it isn't the direction you're taking. Of course, I wasn't asked, but I thought I'd like to have a look-see at this pin-up girl. I hear they've planned a stunt 開始 the show that is copied after the very artistic setting little 行方不明になる Pin-up has in your room."
Her oval 直面する was uplifted. Her curved mouth was a smiling challenge. The depths of her dark 注目する,もくろむs にもかかわらず 伝えるd a hint of jealous 観察. There was a bit of it in her 発言する/表明する.
Don Kemp liked Mary Morgan. But at this moment he wondered what she would think if she really knew what was 続けざまに猛撃するing inside his mind.
He had a 職業 to do. Somewhere about the swanky beach hotel he was 納得させるd the 詳細な計画 どろぼう and 秘かに調査する must be ぐずぐず残る. He could not get his thoughts off the remembrance that only Tina had been told about the 隠すd 塀で囲む 安全な.
It was true, a 徹底的な enemy スパイ/執行官 might have accidently 実験(する)d that pin-up picture. That was something he had to know. His idea of not …に出席するing the ballroom show was changed.
Kemp had not known of his own background for the pin-up girl 存在 copied. He had ーするつもりであるd to rid himself of the captain's attractive daughter. On an impulse he gave her his arm.
"We have a date to see the show together," he said gruffly.
"Maybe it's the Miami moon makes grouchy 耐えるs out of some men," chattered Mary Morgan. "Lost something, Don?"
"Naw, c'mon," he grunted, his breath pulling in at the nearness of her 無作為の retort.
He was 決定するd to excuse himself quickly. Mary Morgan laughed musically.
"You know, Don, at times I've 手配中の,お尋ね者 to see these pin-up girls in person," she said. "特に this Tina Layton. And there's that Bobby 小道/航路, too."
Don Kemp saw a partly bald, baggy-注目する,もくろむd man in youthful 着せる/賦与するs not far from the ballroom doorway. Bobby 小道/航路 was rising from a 議長,司会を務める as they entered.
Because of the sudden 激しい抗議 from the 行う/開催する/段階, Kemp did not see Bobby 小道/航路 suddenly disappear through a 味方する door. And the excitement was 限定するd to those nearest the 行う/開催する/段階.
Kemp had heard of the show 経営者/支配人, the 非軍事の スパイ/執行官 who was making the 小旅行する of the (軍の)野営地,陣営s. And he saw him now. A tall and 黒人/ボイコット-haired man strode quickly to the middle of the 行う/開催する/段階 and he was signaling with both 手渡すs.
"(犯罪の)一味 it 負かす/撃墜する, boys!" (機の)カム the show 経営者/支配人's 発言する/表明する.
His 指名する was Lonny Walsh, によれば publicity. Now his トン was sharp and hard. Mary Morgan gripped Kemp's arm. 明らかに she had seen the same thing he had.
"Don, that isn't funny!" cried out Mary.
IT was not funny. There was an artist's life-size 製図/抽選 of Tina, the famous pin-up girl. Her shapely person was seemingly 決定的な and living as it stood out against the 黒人/ボイコット background on which the artist had painted his picture.
From golden hair to slender ankles, the 人物/姿/数字 was one to bring 前へ/外へ an 認可するing 賞賛 of the engineers that just as suddenly died out. That was why Lonny Walsh, the (軍の)野営地,陣営 show 経営者/支配人, was (犯罪の)一味ing 負かす/撃墜する the curtain. He ordered all 行う/開催する/段階 lights off.
For the green jade haft of a knife showed distinctly where the blade had been driven into the pin-up picture, just where the heart would have been in the living person of Tina Layton. "What the devil?" 爆発するd Kemp, 解放する/自由なing himself from Mary Morgan, "Why, it's my dagger—!"
The exclamation had been shocked from him. He 削減(する) it off as Mary's dark 注目する,もくろむs 広げるd. But Kemp did not wait. He left Mary 星/主役にするing after him as he wedged his way to the 味方する of the ballroom, and the 狭くする 回廊(地帯) 主要な backstage.
The shouting in the ballroom had died out. There were angry murmurs coming from the men, 脅すd cries from the WACS and nurses who had come to see the show.
The 回廊(地帯) was darkened. A shadowy 人物/姿/数字 小衝突d by Kemp. Instinctively he struck out with a quick, short left punch. A man grunted and fell 負かす/撃墜する. Kemp kept on going. He had identified 脚s McCarthy as he had fallen.
An electrician and some other 行う/開催する/段階 従業員s were collected in the 行う/開催する/段階 wings. Kemp bore 負かす/撃墜する upon them.
"Where's 行方不明になる Layton's dressing room?" he 問い合わせd.
"That way," pointed a 行う/開催する/段階 手渡す. "Who're you—what the devil 商売/仕事—?"
But Don Kemp was not answering questions. He was asking just now.
He saw a door the hotel 管理/経営 had decorated with a gilt 星/主役にする. He tried the knob and the door was locked. He 支援するd off and drove at it with one hard shoulder. Metal snapped. The room was all dark. Kemp cupped his cigarette はしけ looking for the button. He kept the light cupped in his 手渡すs.
Tina Layton, the pin-up girl, was there. She was alone. As alone as anyone could be with a green-hafted knife driven into her heart. Her blue 注目する,もくろむs were open, unseeing, but they seemed to Kemp to be asking a question—"Why, Don? Why?"
One moment Kemp was 負かす/撃墜する beside the pin-up girl. All she had been wearing was the skimpy sarong. Her 団体/死体 was still beautiful. Her 直面する and her sightless blue 注目する,もくろむs were 恐ろしい.
Yet Don Kemp held her in his 武器 for a few seconds. He scarcely considered the green-扱うd dagger. He kissed the 冷淡な lips, in 別れの(言葉,会) to the past.
A HAMMERING (機の)カム at the door he had slammed shut. Kemp snapped to his feet. He moved to one 味方する の中で a hanging collection of 衣料品s. The lights flashed on.
Lonny Walsh, the swarthy 行う/開催する/段階 経営者/支配人 was in the doorway, 支援するd up by others.
"For the love of heaven, look!" Lonny Walsh's 発言する/表明する trembled. "It wasn't just a show stunt. It's true."
Kemp 辛勝する/優位d slowly toward two big wardrobe trunks.
"The same 肉親,親類d of green jade dagger!" exclaimed Lonny Walsh. "Someone on this 行う/開催する/段階—no—Tina had that 肉親,親類d of a stabber! What does it mean?"
Don Kemp crouched, considering his next move. The twin Spanish daggers, of Chinese origin probably, had been the gift of an uncle. Don had been in a laughing mood the night he had put a 石/投石する upon Tina's finger and one of the twin daggers in her 手渡す.
He had said then, "Here's my heart, Tina. You can 貯蔵所d it to you or use the knife."
She had been unwilling to 受託する the twin dagger. She had been shy, 粘着するing to him.
He had said, "Every time you see the dagger, you will know its mate is on my desk. You will think of me. It's a swell letter opener."
Far away and long ago that seemed.
Lonny Walsh stood with clenched 握りこぶしs. Beside him was the fussy, elegant dresser, Carlos Carnes, 非軍事の assistant 経営者/支配人 of the hotel who had remained as a director of other than army activities.
Carnes was rubbing his 手渡す along a thin nose. His light hair appeared to bristle and his mouth quivered.
Several others of the traveling 芸能人s were (人が)群がるing into the room. Lonny Walsh waved them 支援する with a soulful 誓い. 脚s McCarthy, one 注目する,もくろむ swollen, 軍隊d his way through the (人が)群がる to the inside.
Lonny Walsh was bending 負かす/撃墜する, looking at the death dagger.
"Not a chance of 指紋s," he said. "The jade haft's all carved into little 人物/姿/数字s."
Carlos Carnes rubbed the 支援する of a 手渡す across his mouth. He seemed to have all the natural instincts of a hotel man, even if the army was in 所有/入手.
"Can't the army keep this from 存在 smeared all over?" said Carnes. "It'll be remembered when the hotel's turned 支援する."
Carnes' 利益/興味 in the dead girl, her 団体/死体 still warm and lovely, was 純粋に 商売/仕事, it appeared.
"Look!" said an 芸能人. "Wasn't there a little light like a match or something beside the 団体/死体 when we (機の)カム in?"
That had been Don Kemp's cigarette はしけ.
"Sure thing, and the shock almost made me forget it," said Lonny Walsh. "Tina was killed in the past few minutes. It must have been the 殺し屋."
"If it was," said Carlos Carnes, "he could be mixing up 権利 now with the (人が)群がる. There was a small light and a man's 人物/姿/数字. Seeing the girl and that same dagger that was on the 行う/開催する/段階 a few minutes ago made me forget it."
Baldish Bobby 小道/航路 thrust others aside and (機の)カム in.
Bobby 小道/航路's 注目する,もくろむs were bagged and his 厚い lips were too loose. But he appeared to have 本物の grief.
He cried out with an 誓い, then he was on the 床に打ち倒す, one arm around the dead girl's shoulders.
"Who's the 殺し屋—?" then Bobby 小道/航路 barely touched the tip of the dagger haft. "That stabber!" he cried out "Tina had one like it. She said it was a twin to a dagger owned by some engineer 指名するd Kemp, 中尉/大尉/警部補 Don Kemp, I think. She's—"
Bobby 小道/航路's 発言する/表明する broke convincingly.
"—the only girl I've ever really loved."
DON KEMP swore silently, 持つ/拘留するing to his hiding place behind the trunks. He knew that Bobby 小道/航路 had already had four wives and かなりの other newspaper notice of woman troubles.
A pair of 堅い M.P.s used their clubs to get through the room.
"Get away from her, buddy!" rapped one at Bobby 小道/航路. "Nobody's to touch anything. What's that about the dagger belonging to 中尉/大尉/警部補 Don Kemp?"
"Yeah, Tina had one of a pair Kemp had given her," repeated Bobby 小道/航路 vindictively. "I 需要・要求する Kemp's 即座の 逮捕(する)."
"But, Bobby," 反対するd Tony Walsh. "It's the same as the dagger someone stabbed into the heart of our life-size pin-up picture. Perhaps a search of the room—"
"You'll leave that to the 正規の/正選手 警官,(賞などを)獲得するs, mister!" ordered one M.P. "This isn't a part of the show. It's 殺人 and in the city of Miami Beach!"
明らかに it had not occurred to anyone that the man seen with the light could still be hidden in the room. Kemp's 注目する,もくろむs 逸脱するd to the dressing (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する の近くに beside his (犯人の)隠れ家 trunks. A gold, beaded handbag lay there. He noticed that its clasp was open as if the 殺害者 might already have 調査するd its contents.
Or it could have been left that way as Tina made up for the show.
Kemp decided he had to take a chance. If he could reach out and snatch the handbag without 存在 (悪事,秘密などを)発見するd, there was a 可能性 that it might 含む/封じ込める some hint of a 動機 for 殺人,大当り the pin-up girl.
An 全体にわたるd 行う/開催する/段階 手渡す spoke up then from the 支援する of the (人が)群がる.
"Heard you say that knife was the same as was in that pin-up picture on the 行う/開催する/段階," he said. "Maybe it's the same one. Anyway while the lights was out that knife was grabbed by somebody an' we ain't seen it since."
"When the city 警官,(賞などを)獲得するs get here, we'll 支払う/賃金 a visit to Don Kemp's 4半期/4分の1s," said one M.P.
脚s McCarthy spoke almost viciously.
"Kemp isn't there! That's where I got this 注目する,もくろむ!" I met him in the 行う/開催する/段階 回廊(地帯) an' he slammed me one!"
"What the devil—!" thought Kemp. "Why—that's my dagger!"
"And what were you doing 支援する here?"
Tony Walsh's 黒人/ボイコット 注目する,もくろむs glittered and he was quick.
"Why—井戸/弁護士席, you see Tina Layton comes from my home town," said McCarthy, the 軍団 カメラマン. "I was 支援する here, yes, but her door was locked and she didn't answer. I was going 支援する out 前線 when 中尉/大尉/警部補 Kemp 急ぐd me and slammed me one."
All 利益/興味 was for seconds 中心d upon 脚s McCarthy. Kemp saw his chance. He 所有するd the beaded handbag with cat-like quickness.
殺人 men of the city police were coming in.
"Thomas McCarthy, --th U. S. Army Engineers, Per 政府 Island, New York City:"
Kemp had no 適切な時期 to open a letter. But the 状況/情勢 was (疑いを)晴らす enough. Postmarks showed that 脚s McCarthy had been 令状ing 定期的に to Tina Layton, all letters 演説(する)/住所d to Chicago.
"Of all the 二塁打-crossing heels—" Kemp whispered it.
Then he stopped. What might Tina have written to McCarthy? Evidently she had been wildly ambitious. Perhaps she was only playing Bobby 小道/航路 for a sucker.
Kemp wondered how many war 社債 購入(する)s might have gone into choosing the 勝利者 of the pinup contest?
A SERGEANT REARDON was in 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 of the city 殺人 squad. Getting a quick review from the M.P.s, Reardon 需要・要求するd, "Find this 中尉/大尉/警部補 Don Kemp. Don't waste time!"
A musical, angry 発言する/表明する (機の)カム from the doorway. Kemp 危険d 存在 seen and had a glimpse of pretty, dark-注目する,もくろむd Mary Morgan.
"中尉/大尉/警部補 Kemp was with me outside when this—this pin-up girl was killed!" she 発表するd. "How about asking Bobby 小道/航路 some questions? I saw him go toward the 行う/開催する/段階 just before the curtain went up on that dagger in the pin-up picture."
Bobby 小道/航路 turned toward her his mouth 新たな展開ing.
"That's a 爆破d 嘘(をつく)!" he mouthed. "I was outside when the curtain went up, and went into the hotel ロビー to make a phone call."
"We'll check with the switchboard 操作者," said Sergeant Reardon.
"I used the public dial phone in a booth and didn't 接触する the 操作者," あわてて 供給(する)d Bobby 小道/航路. "Why would I want to kill the girl I ーするつもりであるd to marry?"
"On the 記録,記録的な/記録するs you 減少(する) 'em 急速な/放蕩な!" snapped hardboiled Sergeant Reardon. "Maybe she had somethin' on you, 小道/航路. One of you take over her things. Where's her handbag? A dame like her always has enough in one to fill a trunk."
Two minutes later the 捜査員s 発表するd that the 殺害者 must have taken the handbag.
Kemp thought, if 脚s McCarthy happened to be the man, he would have taken his letters at least.
Then, 持つ/拘留するing them in his 手渡す, Kemp noticed a few words written across an envelope in Tina's scrawly 手渡す. As he was reading the 簡潔な/要約する 宣告,判決 in amazement, Captain Morgan (機の)カム in.
Mary Morgan was still in the doorway. Kemp heard the C.O.'s low-発言する/表明するd 命令(する) to the girl.
"Go home—don't make a fool of yourself over Kemp—we've been in his rooms—that dagger he always used on the draughting (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する is not there—"
Kemp was still digesting Tina's scrawled 令状ing.
"If anything happens to me, it's because I talked too much to Bobby and Tony about how I would surprise them with what my pin-up picture is hiding in Don Kemp's—"
That was all. The girl might have been interrupted in her scribbling. But 明確に she must have had a hunch that she was in danger. She could only have told Bobby 小道/航路 and Tony Walsh about the 安全な behind her pin-up picture, thought Kemp.
And that stunt of the dagger thrust into the life-size pin-up 製図/抽選 on the 行う/開催する/段階? Kemp squinted to 熟考する/考慮する the 直面する and small, beady 注目する,もくろむs of Tony Walsh.
What a throw-off アリバイ, 事実上 spoiling his show, that stabbing of a pin-up picture might have been!
This Sergeant Reardon was 最高の,を越すs at 選ぶing out what might turn out to be his meat. He rasped an order.
"(疑いを)晴らす the room, boys! You, Walsh, Carnes, Bobby 小道/航路, and this girl with Don Kemp's アリバイ, stick here! Don't any of the 残り/休憩(する) of you leave the hotel!"
The room was 存在 (疑いを)晴らすd, except for those the police sergeant had 指名するd. Kemp was surprised that 脚s McCarthy had not been 含むd with the others told to stick.
The police 医療の examiner was doing his stuff. The 指紋 boys were 完全に 妨げるd. The dagger haft was too rough to 保持する impressions. 事実上 everything else in the dressing room might have been touched by any number of persons.
The C.O., Captain Morgan, started to 演習 his 権利. 殺人 was under 民法. But this hotel was 軍の 保留(地)/予約.
"My daughter will go to her room and be on call, Sergeant Reardon," 宣言するd Captain Morgan. "She isn't mixed up in this, except by the 偶発の 会合 with 中尉/大尉/警部補 Kemp."
Kemp's whole attention was drawn to the girl's flashing 注目する,もくろむs and the 質 of her sudden 反抗.
"I'm staying 権利 here, father," she 宣言するd. "They are trying to put something の上に Don Kemp. It's my place beside him, if he is 設立する. You see, this is all foolishness. I'm sorry for Tina Layton, but Don had given her up weeks ago. Don and I 推定する/予想する to 発表する our 約束/交戦."
KEMP really saw Mary Morgan then for the first time. わずかな/ほっそりした and straight, lovely and daring, she 直面するd her father. Kemp uttered an inward groan. He knew now that this girl had been growing upon him, in spite of his bitterness over Tina's sudden selfish ambition that had made her another person—a pin-up girl.
"Okay, 行方不明になる!" growled Reardon. "(疑いを)晴らす 'em out! You stay, if you 主張する. Captain Morgan, the circumstances fit 中尉/大尉/警部補 Kemp 公正に/かなり straight. We'll have to 持つ/拘留する him when he is brought in."
The room was (疑いを)晴らすing. The 殺人d Tina's scrawled words took on sudden, 決定的な importance. Kemp realized that any one of four persons still in this room, although 脚s McCarthy was 追跡するing out slowly behind the others, might be the 殺し屋.
And one or a pair or more could be 伴う/関わるd in the 窃盗 of the 戦車/タンク 計画(する)s from his room.
Tony Walsh and Bobby 小道/航路 evidently had been told too much by Tina about his hidden 安全な.
脚s McCarthy had been 内密に corresponding with Tina. Had he made that 二塁打-crossing play for the girl, or for what he believed she might know?
Kemp's position could not be 持続するd much longer. It had been sheer audacity that had kept him behind the big trunks. He must get out, be 解放する/自由な to put a finger upon the 殺し屋 and the どろぼう who had stolen the 戦車/タンク 計画(する)s.
As the space (疑いを)晴らすd about the dead girl, the idea (機の)カム. Kemp looked at the small, 厚かましさ/高級将校連 square around the light button only eight or ten feet away.
"It's one chance and a long one," he whispered.
He slid his army .45 into his 手渡す. Always a 割れ目 発射, he had no 疑問 what he could do to that light button and the wires connected with it.
Then he 直す/買収する,八百長をするd the position of everyone in the room.
脚s McCarthy was just going through the door, slowly, as if there was something here that he 手配中の,お尋ね者. It could be those letters.
Bobby 小道/航路 was standing beside Tony Walsh, his 明らかに mournful 注目する,もくろむs upon Tina's 団体/死体. 黒人/ボイコット-注目する,もくろむd Tony Walsh seemed to be 熟考する/考慮するing everyone who went through the doorway. Carlos Carnes, the 非軍事の 経営者/支配人, was rubbing at his nose in a worried way.
Captain Morgan and Mary were to one 味方する. The C.O. was red-直面するd with 怒り/怒る and talking in a low トン to the livid girl. She was shaking her 長,率いる with 会社/堅い 決意. Don Kemp 解除するd the army gun slowly. The 爆発 of the .45 was like a 割れ目 of 雷鳴 in that small room. There was a blue flash from the 塀で囲む. Then there was almost instant and impenetrable 不明瞭.
Kemp dropped, はうing a few feet, coming up and 飛び込み as Sergeant Reardon roared out an 誓い. "Dumbheads! Get him! The 殺し屋's been here all the time!" Reardon's own Police 肯定的な must have 割れ目d and Captain Morgan called out. "Stop that! Someone will be killed! 封鎖する the door!" Don Kemp made a long dive to where 脚s McCarthy was just 出発/死ing. His 麻薬中毒の arm brought the カメラマン of the 軍団 衝突,墜落ing 負かす/撃墜する.
But there was a 一致した 急ぐ for the door. As McCarthy fell, 悪口を言う/悪態ing wildly, a man 叫び声をあげるd hoarsely. His death agony was almost like that of an animal.
Sergeant Reardon 炎d a flashlight across the room. Kemp let go of McCarthy and rolled. He saw Bobby 小道/航路 on the 床に打ち倒す with 血 pumping from his ripped throat. The millionaire playboy was speechless now and would be dead in seconds.
Tall Tony Walsh had half fallen over the dying man. Kemp's 粉砕するing 弾丸 had torn the wiring and blown a fuse. The outside 回廊(地帯) was all in 不明瞭.
Kemp let go of McCarthy and (機の)カム up. He 粉砕するd a left to Tony Walsh's chin. But as Walsh fell, Kemp saw the pudgy white 手渡す that thrust the jade-hafted dagger into Walsh's pocket. The dagger had been snatched from the pin-up girl's heart.
Kemp smacked the バーレル/樽 of his gun across the teeth of Carlos Carnes, the 非軍事の 経営者/支配人. As the man went 負かす/撃墜する, Kemp whirled, talking, with Reardon and three other 巡査s covering him with their guns.
"中尉/大尉/警部補 Kemp 報告(する)/憶測ing, sir!" he snapped at Captain Morgan. "計画(する)s two-four-three were stolen by one of these three men this afternoon! The 血 on Carlos Carnes' 手渡す shows who knifed Bobby 小道/航路, かもしれない because he was afraid he would talk. Before I'm under 逮捕(する), I would 示唆する Carnes' rooms and all of the baggage of Bobby 小道/航路 and Tony Walsh be searched."
BEFORE he submitted the scribbled words of Tina, the pin-up girl, Don Kemp separated the envelope from the other letters of 脚s McCarthy. McCarthy 星/主役にするd at Kemp as the 中尉/大尉/警部補 made a swift pass of the letters to him, and then 逆転するd his gun and 手渡すd it to Sergeant Reardon.
A little later, Tony Walsh (疑いを)晴らすd himself. The 戦車/タンク 計画(する)s were 明らかにするd from under a rug in Carlos Carnes' office.
"Tina told us about a hidden 安全な behind her pinup picture," explained Tony Walsh. "I tried to stop her. Bobby 小道/航路's という評判の fortune has dwindled to nothing. But he had been getting 正規の/正選手 remittances.
"Bobby 小道/航路 was 存在 paid as an Axis スパイ/執行官. I knew he was already 熟知させるd with Carlos Carnes, here at the hotel. As soon as that 行う/開催する/段階 stabbing stunt and the 殺人 ぼんやり現れるd up, I was 納得させるd either Bobby 小道/航路 or Carnes was the 殺し屋. I kept 静かな for the time, waiting to see how the 陰謀,しくまれたわな might be pinned upon 中尉/大尉/警部補 Kemp.
"I congratulate you, 中尉/大尉/警部補, on 存在 smarter and quicker than these Axis stooges. I've an idea Carnes killed Bobby 小道/航路 and Tina. He would 人物/姿/数字 that Kemp would know or guess where the (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) had come from about his hidden 安全な. No 疑問 Carnes was planning to take quick leave of this place."
"You're all technically under 逮捕(する)," 発表するd Sergeant Reardon a little later. "However, we have checked with the F.B.I., and they are 公正に/かなり 確かな Carnes is one of the Axis スパイ/執行官s who slipped out of their 罠(にかける) up in Detroit nearly a year ago."
Don Kemp 直面するd the C.O. a short time after that.
"I should have you up and drummed out for keeping priceless (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) to yourself," grunted Captain Morgan. Then his rugged 直面する 割れ目d into a grin.
"However, if what Mary says is true, I'll 保証(人) you'll never again hide anything behind the picture of a pin-up girl," 追加するd the C.O. "By the way, Mary is waiting up for you. After what she had been through, I ordered her to get to bed. So she's waiting up. My boy, Mary doesn't take orders and I've never known her to 行方不明になる what she goes after."
Don Kemp smiled a little. He snapped a salute and stepped out into the room where Mary was waiting, her dark 注目する,もくろむs 解除するd to 会合,会う him.
Don Kemp heard Captain Morgan mutter, faintly, "An' may the good gods have mercy on your soul."
