Nothing in this article is to be considered as an 試みる/企てる to 前進する any theory in 対立 to 受託するd history. It is 簡単に a fictional background for a 一連の fiction-stories. When I began 令状ing the Conan stories a few years ago, I 用意が出来ている this 'history' of his age and the peoples of that age, ーするために lend him and his sagas a greater 面 of realness. And I 設立する that by 固執するing to the 'facts' and spirit of that history, in 令状ing the stories, it was easier to visualize (and therefore to 現在の) him as a real flesh-and-血 character rather than a ready-made 製品. In 令状ing about him and his adventures in the さまざまな kingdoms of his Age, I have never 侵害する/違反するd the 'facts' or spirit of the 'history' here 始める,決める 負かす/撃墜する, but have followed the lines of that history as closely as the writer of actual historical-fiction follows the lines of actual history. I have used this 'history' as a guide in all the stories in this series that I have written.
The Phantagraph, February 1936
OF THAT EPOCH known by the Nemedian chroniclers as the Pre-Cataclysmic Age, little is known except the latter part, and that is 隠すd in the もやs of legendry. Known history begins with the 病弱なing of the Pre-Cataclysmic civilization, 支配するd by the kingdoms of Kamelia, Valusia, Verulia, Grondar, Thule and Commoria. These peoples spoke a 類似の language, arguing a ありふれた origin. There were other kingdoms, 平等に civilized, but 住むd by different, and 明らかに older races.
The barbarians of that age were the Picts, who lived on islands far out on the western ocean; the Atlanteans, who dwelt on a small continent between the Pictish Islands and the main, or Thurian Continent; and the Lemurians, who 住むd a chain of large islands in the eastern 半球.
There were 広大な 地域s of unexplored land. The civilized kingdoms, though enormous in extent, 占領するd a comparatively small 部分 of the whole 惑星. Valusia was the western-most kingdom of the Thurian Continent; Grondar the eastern-most. East of Grondar, whose people were いっそう少なく 高度に cultured than those of their kindred kingdoms, stretched a wild and barren expanse of 砂漠s. の中で the いっそう少なく arid stretches of 砂漠, in the ジャングルs, and の中で the mountains, lived scattered 一族/派閥s and tribes of 原始の savages. Far to the south there was a mysterious civilization, unconnected with the Thurian culture, and 明らかに pre-human in its nature. On the far-eastern shores of the Continent there lived another race, human, but mysterious and 非,不,無-Thurian, with which the Lemurians from time to time (機の)カム in 接触する. They 明らかに (機の)カム from a shadowy and nameless continent lying somewhere east of the Lemurian Islands.
The Thurian civilization was 崩壊するing; their armies were composed 大部分は of barbarian mercenaries. Picts, Atlanteans and Lemurians were their generals, their statesmen, often their kings. Of the bickerings of the kingdoms, and the wars between Valusia and Commoria, 同様に as the conquests by which the Atlanteans 設立するd a kingdom on the 本土/大陸, there were more legends than 正確な history.
Then the Cataclysm 激しく揺するd the world. Atlantis and Lemuria sank, and the Pictish Islands were heaved up to form the mountain 頂点(に達する)s of a new continent. Sections of the Thurian Continent 消えるd under the waves, or 沈むing, formed 広大な/多数の/重要な inland lakes and seas. 火山s broke 前へ/外へ and terrific 地震s shook 負かす/撃墜する the 向こうずねing cities of the empires. Whole nations were blotted out.
The barbarians fared a little better than the civilized races. The inhabitants of the Pictish Islands were destroyed, but a 広大な/多数の/重要な 植民地 of them, settled の中で the mountains of Valusia's southern frontier, to serve as a 衝撃を和らげるもの against foreign 侵略, was untouched. The 大陸の kingdom of the Atlanteans likewise escaped the ありふれた 廃虚, and to it (機の)カム thousands of their tribesmen in ships from the 沈むing land. Many Lemurians escaped to the eastern coast of the Thurian Continent, which was comparatively untouched. There they were enslaved by the 古代の race which already dwelt there, and their history, for thousands of years, is a history of 残虐な servitude.
In the western part of the Continent, changing 条件s created strange forms of 工場/植物 and animal life. 厚い ジャングルs covered the plains, 広大な/多数の/重要な rivers 削減(する) their roads to the sea, wild mountains were heaved up, and lakes covered the 廃虚s of old cities in fertile valleys. To the 大陸の kingdom of the Atlanteans, from sunken areas, 群れているd myriads of beasts and savages — ape-men and apes. 軍隊d to 戦う/戦い continually for their lives, they yet managed to 保持する 痕跡s of their former 明言する/公表する of 高度に 前進するd 野蛮/未開. Robbed of metals and 鉱石s, they became 労働者s in 石/投石する like their distant ancestors, and had 達成するd a real artistic level, when their struggling culture (機の)カム into 接触する with the powerful Pictish nation. The Picts had also 逆戻りするd to flint, but had 前進するd more 速く in the 事柄 of 全住民 and war-science. They had 非,不,無 of the Atlanteans' artistic nature; they were a ruder, more practical, more prolific race. They left no pictures painted or carved on ivory, as did their enemies, but they left remarkably efficient flint 武器s in plenty.
These 石/投石する-age kingdoms 衝突/不一致d, and in a 一連の 血まみれの wars, the より数が多いd Atlanteans were 投げつけるd 支援する into a 明言する/公表する of savagery, and the 進化 of the Picts was 停止(させる)d. Five hundred years after the Cataclysm the 野蛮な kingdoms have 消えるd. It is now a nation of savages—the Picts—carrying on continual 戦争 with tribes of savages—the Atlanteans. The Picts had the advantage of numbers and まとまり, 反して the Atlanteans had fallen into loosely knit 一族/派閥s. That was the west of that day.
In the distant east, 削減(する) off from the 残り/休憩(する) of the world by the heaving up of gigantic mountains and the forming of a chain of 広大な lakes, the Lemurians are toiling as slaves of their 古代の masters. The far south is still 隠すd in mystery. Untouched by the Cataclysm, its 運命 is still pre-human. Of the civilized races of the Thurian Continent, a 残余 of one of the 非,不,無-Valusian nations dwells の中で the low mountains of the southeast—the Zhemri. Here and there about the world are scattered 一族/派閥s of apish savages, 完全に ignorant of the rise and 落ちる of the 広大な/多数の/重要な civilizations. But in the far north another people are slowly coming into 存在.
At the time of the Cataclysm, a 禁止(する)d of savages, whose 開発 was not much above that of the Neanderthal, fled to the north to escape 破壊. They 設立する the snow-countries 住むd only by a 種類 of ferocious snow-apes—抱擁する shaggy white animals, 明らかに native to that 気候. These they fought and drove beyond the 北極の circle, to 死なせる/死ぬ, as the savages thought. The latter, then, adapted themselves to their hardy new 環境 and throve.
After the Pictish-Atlantean wars had destroyed the beginnings of what might have been a new culture, another, lesser cataclysm その上の altered the 外見 of the 初めの continent, left a 広大な/多数の/重要な inland sea where the chain of lakes had been, to その上の separate west from east, and the attendant 地震s, floods and 火山s 完全にするd the 廃虚 of the barbarians which their 部族の wars had begun.
A thousand years after the lesser cataclysm, the western world is seen to be a wild country of ジャングルs and lakes and 激しい rivers. の中で the forest- covered hills of the northwest 存在する wandering 禁止(する)d of ape-men, without human speech, or the knowledge of 解雇する/砲火/射撃 or the use of 器具/実施するs. They are the 子孫s of the Atlanteans, sunk 支援する into the squalling 大混乱 of ジャングル- bestiality from which ages ago their ancestors so laboriously はうd. To the 南西 dwell scattered 一族/派閥s of degraded, 洞穴-dwelling savages, whose speech is of the most 原始の form, yet who still 保持する the 指名する of Picts, which has come to mean 単に a 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 指定するing men—themselves, to distinguish them from the true beasts with which they 競う for life and food. It is their only link with their former 行う/開催する/段階. Neither the squalid Picts nor the apish Atlanteans have any 接触する with other tribes or peoples.
Far to the east, the Lemurians, levelled almost to a bestial 計画(する) themselves by the brutishness of their slavery, have risen and destroyed their masters. They are savages stalking の中で the 廃虚s of a strange civilization. The 生存者s of that civilization, who have escaped the fury of their slaves, have come 西方の. They 落ちる upon that myterious pre-human kingdom of the south and 倒す it, 代用品,人ing their own culture, 修正するd by 接触する with the older one. The newer kingdom is called Stygia, and 残余s of the older nation seemed to have 生き残るd, and even been worshipped, after the race as a whole had been destroyed.
Here and there in the world small groups of savages are showing 調印するs of an 上向き 傾向; these are scattered and unclassified. But in the north, the tribes are growing. These people are called Hyborians, or Hybori; their god was Bori—some 広大な/多数の/重要な 長,指導者, whom legend made even more 古代の as the king who led them into the north, in the days of the 広大な/多数の/重要な Cataclysm, which the tribes remember only in distorted folklore.
They have spread over the north, and are 押し進めるing southward in leisurely treks. So far they have not come in 接触する with any other races; their wars have been with one another. Fifteen hundred years in the north country have made them a tall, tawny-haired, grey-注目する,もくろむd race, vigorous and warlike, and already 展示(する)ing a 井戸/弁護士席-defined artistry and poetism of nature. They still live mostly by the 追跡(する), but the southern tribes have been raising cattle for some centuries. There is one exception in their so far 完全にする 孤立/分離 from other races: a wanderer into the far north returned with the news that the 恐らく 砂漠d ice wastes were 住むd by an 広範囲にわたる tribe of ape-like men, descended, he swore, from the beasts driven out of the more habitable land by the ancestors of the Hyborians. He 勧めるd that a large war-party be sent beyond the 北極の circle to 皆殺しにする these beasts, whom he swore were 発展させるing into true men. He was jeered at; a small 禁止(する)d of adventurous young 軍人s followed him into the north, but 非,不,無 returned.
But tribes of the Hyborians were drifting south, and as the 全住民 増加するd this movement became 広範囲にわたる. The 許すing age was an 時代 of wandering and conquest. Across the history of the world tribes and drifts of tribes move and 転換 in an everchanging panorama.
Look at the world five hundred years later. Tribes of tawny-red Hyborians have moved southward and 西方の, 征服する/打ち勝つing and destroying many of the small unclassified 一族/派閥s.
吸収するing the 血 of 征服する/打ち勝つd races, already the 子孫s of the older drifts have begun to show 修正するd racial traits, and these mixed races are attacked ひどく by new, purer-血d drifts, and swept before them, as a broom sweeps 破片 impartially, to become even more mixed and mingled in the 絡まるd 破片 of races and tag-ends of races.
As yet the 征服者/勝利者s have not come in 接触する with the older races. To the southeast the 子孫s of the Zhemri, given impetus by new 血 resulting from admixture with some unclassified tribe, are beginning to 捜し出す to 生き返らせる some faint 影をつくる/尾行する of their 古代の culture. To the west the apish Atlanteans are beginning the long climb 上向き. They have 完全にするd the cycle of 存在; they have long forgotten their former 存在 as men; unaware of any other former 明言する/公表する, they are starting the climb unhelped and 邪魔されない by human memories. To the south of them the Picts remain savages, 明らかに 反抗するing the 法律s of Nature by neither 進歩ing nor retrogressing. Far to the south dreams the 古代の mysterious kingdom of Stygia. On its eastern 国境s wander 一族/派閥s of nomadic savages, already known as the Sons of Shem.
Next to the Picts, in the 幅の広い valley of Zingg, 保護するd by 広大な/多数の/重要な mountains, a nameless 禁止(する)d of 原始のs, 試験的に 分類するd as akin to the Shemites, has 発展させるd an 前進するd 農業の system and 存在.
Another factor has 追加するd to the impetus of Hyborian drift. A tribe of that race has discovered the use of 石/投石する in building, and the first Hyborian kingdom has come into 存在—the rude and 野蛮な kingdom of Hyperborea, which had its beginning in a 天然のまま 要塞 of 玉石s heaped to repel 部族の attack. The people of this tribe soon abandoned their horse-hide テントs for 石/投石する houses, crudely but mightily built, and thus 保護するd, they grew strong. There are few more 劇の events in history than the rise of the rude, 猛烈な/残忍な kingdom of Hyperborea, whose people turned 突然の from their nomadic life to 後部 dwellings of naked 石/投石する, surrounded by cyclopean 塀で囲むs — a race scarcely 現れるd from the polished 石/投石する age, who had by a freak of chance, learned the first rude 原則s of architecture.
The rise of this kingdom drove 前へ/外へ many other tribes, for, 敗北・負かすd in the war, or 辞退するing to become 支流 to their 城-dwelling kinsmen, many 一族/派閥s 始める,決める 前へ/外へ on long treks that took them halfway around the world. And already the more northern tribes are beginning to be harried by gigantic blond savages, not much more 前進するd than ape-men.
The tale of the next thousand years is the tale of the rise of the Hyborians, whose warlike tribes 支配する the western world. Rude kingdoms are taking 形態/調整. The tawny-haired invaders have 遭遇(する)d the Picts, 運動ing them into the barren lands of the west. To the northwest, the 子孫s of the Atlanteans, climbing unaided from apedom into 原始の savagery, have not yet met the 征服者/勝利者s. Far to the east the Lemurians are 発展させるing a strange 半分-civilization of their own. To the south the Hyborians have 設立するd the kingdom of Koth, on the 国境s of those pastoral countries known as the Lands of Shem, and the savages of those lands, partly through 接触する with the Hyborians, partly through 接触する with the Stygians who have 荒廃させるd them for centuries, are 現れるing from 野蛮/未開. The blond savages of the far north have grown in 力/強力にする and numbers so that the northern Hyborian tribes move southward, 運動ing their kindred 一族/派閥s before them. The 古代の kingdom of Hyperborea is overthrown by one of these northern tribes, which, however, 保持するs the old 指名する. Southeast of Hyperborea a kingdom of the Zhemri has come into 存在, under the 指名する of Zamora. To the 南西, a tribe of Picts have 侵略するd the fertile valley of Zingg, 征服する/打ち勝つd the 農業の people there, and settled の中で them. This mixed race was in turn 征服する/打ち勝つd later by a roving tribe of Hybori, and from these mingled elements (機の)カム the kingdom of Zingara.
Five hundred years later the kingdoms of the world are 明確に defined. The kingdoms of the Hyborians—Aquilonia, Nemedia, Brythunia, Hyperborea, Koth, Ophir, Argos, Corinthia, and one known as the 国境 Kingdom — 支配する the western world. Zamora lies to the east, and Zingara to the 南西 of these kingdoms—people alike in 不明瞭 of complexion and exotic habits, but さもなければ 関係のない. Far to the south sleeps Stygia, untouched by foreign 侵略, but the peoples of Shem have 交流d the Stygian yoke for the いっそう少なく galling one of Koth.
The dusky masters have been driven south of the 広大な/多数の/重要な river Styx, Nilus, or Nile, which, flowing north from the shadowy hinterlands, turns almost at 権利 angles and flows almost 予定 west through the pastoral meadowlands of Shem, to empty into the 広大な/多数の/重要な sea. North of Aquilonia, the western-most Hyborian kingdom, are the Cimmerians, ferocious savages, untamed by the invaders, but 前進するing 速く because of 接触する with them; they are the 子孫s of the Atlanteans, now 進歩ing more 刻々と than their old enemies the Picts, who dwell in the wilderness west of Aquilonia.
Another five centuries and the Hybori peoples are the possessors of a civilization so virile that 接触する with it 事実上 snatched out of the wallow of savagery such tribes as it touched. The most powerful kingdom is Aquilonia, but others 争う with it in strength and mixed race; the nearest to the 古代の root-在庫/株 are the Gundermen of Gunderland, a northern 州 of Aquilonia. But this mixing has not 弱めるd the race. They are 最高の in the western world, though the barbarians of the wastelands are growing in strength.
In the north, golden-haired, blue-注目する,もくろむd barbarians, 子孫s of the blond 北極の savages, have driven the remaining Hyborian tribes out of the snow countries, except the 古代の kingdom of Hyperborea, which resists their 猛攻撃. Their country is called Nordheim, and they are divided into the red- haired Vanir of Vanaheim, and the yellow-haired Aesir of Asgard.
Now the Lemurians enter history again as Hyrkanians. Through the centuries they have 押し進めるd 刻々と 西方の, and now a tribe skirts the southern end of the 広大な/多数の/重要な inland sea—Vilayet—and 設立するs the kingdom of Turan on the southwestern shore. Between the inland sea and the eastern 国境s of the native kingdoms 嘘(をつく) 広大な expanses of steppes and in the extreme north and extreme south, 砂漠s. The 非,不,無-Hyrkanian dwellers of these 領土s are scattered and pastoral, unclassified in the north, Shemitish in the south, aboriginal, with a thin 緊張する of Hyborian 血 from wandering 征服者/勝利者s. Toward the latter part of the period other Hyrkanian 一族/派閥s 押し進める 西方の, around the northern extremity of the inland sea, and 衝突/不一致 with the eastern outposts of the Hyperboreans.
ちらりと見ること 簡潔に at the peoples of that age. The 支配的な of Hyborians are no longer uniformly tawny-haired and grey-注目する,もくろむd. They have mixed with other races. There is a strong Shemitish, even a Stygian 緊張する の中で the peoples of Koth, and to a lesser extent, of Argos, while in the 事例/患者 of the latter, admixture with the Zingarans has been more 広範囲にわたる than with the Shemites. The eastern Brythunians have intermarried with the dark-skinned Zamorians, and the people of southern Aquilonia have mixed with the brown Zingarans until 黒人/ボイコット hair and brown 注目する,もくろむs are the 支配的な type hi Poitain, the southern-most 州. The 古代の kingdom of Hyperborea is more aloof than the others, yet there is 外国人 血 in plenty in its veins, from the 逮捕(する) of foreign women — Hyrkanians, Aesir and Zamorians. Only in the 州 of Gunderland, where the people keep no slaves, is the pure Hyborian 在庫/株 設立する unblemished. But the barbarians have kept their bloodstream pure; the Cimmerians are tall and powerful, with dark hair and blue or grey 注目する,もくろむs. The people of Nordheim are of 類似の build, but with white 肌s, blue 注目する,もくろむs and golden or red hair. The Picts are of the same type as they always were—short, very dark, with 黒人/ボイコット 注目する,もくろむs and hair. The Hyrkanians are dark and 一般に tall and slender, though a squat slant-注目する,もくろむd type is more and more ありふれた の中で them, resulting from mixture with a curious race of intelligent, though stunted, aborigines, 征服する/打ち勝つd by them の中で the mountains east of Vilayet, on their 西方の drift. The Shemites are 一般に of medium 高さ, though いつかs when mixed with Stygian 血, gigantic, 概して and 堅固に built, with hook noses, dark 注目する,もくろむs and blue-黒人/ボイコット hair. The Stygians are tall and 井戸/弁護士席 made, dusky, straight- featured—at least the 判決,裁定 classes are of that type. The lower classes are a 負かす/撃墜する-trodden, mongrel horde, a mixture of negroid, Stygian, Shemitish, even Hyborian 血s. South of Stygia are the 広大な 黒人/ボイコット kingdoms of the アマゾンs, the Kushites, the Atlaians and the hybrid empire of Zembabwei.
Between Aquilonia and the Pictish wilderness 嘘(をつく) the Bossonian marches, peopled by 子孫s of an aboriginal race, 征服する/打ち勝つd by a tribe of Hyborians, 早期に in the first ages of the Hyborian drift. This mixed people never 達成するd the civilization of the purer Hyborians, and was 押し進めるd by them to the very fringe of the civilized world. The Bossonians are of medium 高さ and complexion, their 注目する,もくろむs brown or grey, and they are mesocephalic. They live おもに by 農業, in large 塀で囲むd villages, and are part of the Aquilonian kingdom. Their marches 延長する from the 国境 kingdom in the north to Zingara in the 南西, forming a 防御壁/支持者 for Aquilonia against both the Cimmerians and the Picts. They are stubborn 防御の 闘士,戦闘機s, and centuries of 戦争 against northern and western barbarians have 原因(となる)d them to 発展させる a type of 弁護 almost impregnable against direct attack.
Five hundred years later the Hyborian civilization was swept away. Its 落ちる was unique in that it was not brought about by 内部の decay, but by the growing 力/強力にする of the barbarian nations and the Hyrkanians. The Hyborian peoples were overthrown while their vigorous culture was in its prime.
Yet it was Aquilonia's greed which brought about that 倒す, though 間接に. Wishing to 延長する their empire, her kings made war on their neighbors. Zingara, Argos and Ophir were 別館d 完全な, with the western cities of Shem, which had, with their more eastern kindred, recently thrown off the yoke of Koth. Koth itself, with Corinthia and the eastern Shemitish tribes, was 軍隊d to 支払う/賃金 Aquilonia 尊敬の印 and lend 援助(する) in wars. An 古代の 反目,不和 had 存在するd between Aquilonia and Hyperborea, and the latter now marched to 会合,会う the armies of her western 競争相手. The plains of the 国境 Kingdom were the scene of a 広大な/多数の/重要な and savage 戦う/戦い, in which the northern hosts were utterly 敗北・負かすd, and 退却/保養地d into their 雪の降る,雪の多い fastnesses, whither the 勝利を得た Aquilonians did not 追求する them. Nemedia, which had 首尾よく resisted the western kingdom for centuries, now drew Brythunia and Zamora, and 内密に, Koth, into an 同盟 which bade fair to 鎮圧する the rising empire. But before their armies could join 戦う/戦い, a new enemy appeared in the east, as the Hyrkanians made their first real thrust at the western world. 増強するd by adventurers from east of Vilayet, the riders of Turan swept over Zamora, 荒廃させるd eastern Corinthia, and were met on the plains of Brythunia by the Aquilonians who 敗北・負かすd them and 投げつけるd them 飛行機で行くing eastward. But the 支援する of the 同盟 was broken, and Nemedia took the 防御の in 未来 wars, 補佐官d occasionally by Brythunia and Hyperborea, and, 内密に, as usual, by Koth. This 敗北・負かす of the Hyrkanians showed the nations the real 力/強力にする of the western kingdom, whose splendid armies were augmented by mercenaries, many of them 新採用するd の中で the 外国人 Zingarans, and the 野蛮な Picts and Shemites. Zamora was reconquered from the Hyrkanians, but the people discovered that they had 単に 交流d an eastern master for a western master. Aquilonian 兵士s were 4半期/4分の1d there, not only to 保護する the 荒廃させるd country, but also to keep the people in subjection. The Hyrkanians were not 納得させるd; three more 侵略s burst upon the Zamorian 国境s, and the Lands of Shem, and were 投げつけるd 支援する by the Aquilonians, though the Turanian armies grew larger as hordes of steel-覆う? riders 棒 out of the east, skirting the southern extremity of the inland sea.
But it was in the west that a 力/強力にする was growing 運命にあるd to throw 負かす/撃墜する the kings of Aquilonia from their high places. In the north there was incessant bickering along the Cimmerian 国境s between the 黒人/ボイコット-haired 軍人s and the Nordheimir; and the Aesir, between wars with the Vanir, 攻撃する,非難するd Hyperborea and 押し進めるd 支援する the frontier, destroying city after city. The Cimmerians also fought the Picts and Bossonians impartially, and several times (警察の)手入れ,急襲d into Aquilbnia itself, but their wars were いっそう少なく 侵略s than mere plundering forays.
But the Picts were growing amazingly in 全住民 and 力/強力にする. By a strange 新たな展開 of 運命/宿命, it was 大部分は 予定 to the 成果/努力s of one man, and he an 外国人, that they 始める,決める their feet upon the ways that led to 結局の empire. This man was Arus, a Nemedian priest, a natural-born 改革者. What turned his mind toward the Picts is not 確かな , but this much is history—he 決定するd to go into the western wilderness and 修正する the rude ways of the heathen by the introduction of the gentle worship of Mitra. He was not daunted by the grisly tales of what had happened to 仲買人s and explorers before him, and by some whim of 運命/宿命 he (機の)カム の中で the people he sought, alone and 非武装の, and was not 即時に speared.
The Picts had 利益d by 接触する with Hyborian civilization, but they had always ひどく resisted that 接触する. That is to say, they had learned to work crudely in 巡査 and tin, which were 設立する scantily in their country, and for which latter metal they (警察の)手入れ,急襲d into the mountains of Zingara, or 貿易(する)d hides, 鯨's teeth, walrus tusks and such few things as savages have to 貿易(する). They no longer lived in 洞穴s and tree-避難所s, but built テントs of hides, and 天然のまま huts, copied from those of the Bossonians. They still lived おもに by the chase, since their wilds 群れているd with game of all sorts, and the rivers and sea with fish, but they had learned how to 工場/植物 穀物, which they did sketchily, preferring to steal it from their neighbors the Bossonians and Zingarans. They dwelt in 一族/派閥s which were 一般に at 反目,不和 with each other, and their simple customs were 血-thirsty and utterly inexplicable to a civilized man, such as Arus of Nemedia. They had no direct 接触する with the Hyborians, since the Bossonians 行為/法令/行動するd as a 衝撃を和らげるもの between them. But Arus 持続するd that they were 有能な of 進歩, and events 証明するd the truth of his 主張—though scarcely in the way he meant.
Arus was fortunate in 存在 thrown in with a 長,指導者 of more than usual 知能—Gorm by 指名する. Gorm cannot be explained, any more than Genghis 旅宿泊所, Othman, Attila, or any of those individuals, who, born in naked lands の中で untutored barbarians, yet 所有する the instinct for conquest and empire-building. In a sort of bastard-Bossonian, the priest made the 長,指導者 understand his 目的, and though 極端に puzzled, Gorm gave him 許可 to remain の中で his tribe unbutchered—a 事例/患者 unique in the history of the race. Having learned the language Arus 始める,決める himself to work to 除去する the more unpleasant 段階s of Pictish life—such as human sacrifice, 血- 反目,不和, and the 燃やすing alive of 捕虜s. He harangued Gorm at length, whom he 設立する to be an 利益/興味d, if unresponsive listener. Imagination 再建するs the scene—the 黒人/ボイコット-haired 長,指導者, in his tiger-肌s and necklace of human teeth, squatting on the dirt 床に打ち倒す of the wattle hut, listening intently to the eloquence of the priest, who probably sat on a carven, 肌-covered 封鎖する of mahogany 供給するd in his 栄誉(を受ける)—覆う? in the silken 式服s of a Nemedian priest, gesturing with his slender white 手渡すs as he expounded the eternal 権利s and 司法(官)s which were the truths of Mitra. Doubtless he pointed with repugnance at the 列/漕ぐ/騒動s of skulls which adorned the 塀で囲むs of the hut and 勧めるd Gorm to 許す his enemies instead of putting their bleached 残余s to such use. Arus was the highest 製品 of an innately artistic race, 精製するd by centuries of civilization; Gorm had behind him a 遺産 of a hundred thousand years of 叫び声をあげるing savagery—the pad of the tiger was in his stealthy step, the 支配する of the gorilla in his 黒人/ボイコット-nailed 手渡すs, the 解雇する/砲火/射撃 that 燃やすs in a ヒョウ's 注目する,もくろむs 燃やすd in his.
Arus was a practical man. He 控訴,上告d to the savage's sense of 構成要素 伸び(る); he pointed out the 力/強力にする and splendor of the Hyborian kingdoms, as an example of the 力/強力にする of Mitra, whose teachings and 作品 had 解除するd them up to their high places. And he spoke of cities, and fertile plains, marble 塀で囲むs and アイロンをかける chariots, jeweled towers, and horsemen in their glittering armor riding to 戦う/戦い. And Gorm, with the unerring instinct of the barbarian, passed over his words regarding gods and their teachings, and 直す/買収する,八百長をするd on the 構成要素 力/強力にするs thus vividly 述べるd. There in that mud-床に打ち倒すd wattle hut, with the silk-式服d priest on the mahogany 封鎖する, and the dark-skinned 長,指導者 crouching in his tiger- hides, was laid the 創立/基礎s of empire.
As has been said, Arus was a practical man. He dwelt の中で the Picts and 設立する much that an intelligent man could do to 援助(する) humanity, even when that humanity was cloaked in tiger-肌s and wore necklaces of human teeth. Like all priests of Mitra, he was 教えるd in many things. He 設立する that there were 広大な deposits of アイロンをかける 鉱石 in the Pictish hills, and he taught the natives to 地雷, smelt and work it into 器具/実施するs—農業の 器具/実施するs, as he 情愛深く believed. He 学校/設けるd other 改革(する)s, but these were the most important things he did: he instilled in Gorm a 願望(する) to see the civilized lands of the world; he taught the Picts how to work in アイロンをかける; and he 設立するd 接触する between them and the civilized world. At the 長,指導者s request he 行為/行うd him and some of his 軍人s through the Bossonian marches, where the honest 村人s 星/主役にするd in amazement, into the glittering outer world.
Arus no 疑問 thought that he was making 変えるs 権利 and left, because the Picts listened to him, and 差し控えるd from smiting him with their 巡査 axes. But the Pict was little calculated to 本気で regard teachings which bade him 許す his enemy and abandon the warpath for the ways of honest drudgery. It has been said that he 欠如(する)d artistic sense; his whole nature led to war and 虐殺(する). When the priest talked of the glories of the civilized nations, his dark-skinned listeners were 意図, not on the ideals of his 宗教, but on the 略奪する which he unconsciously 述べるd in the narration of rich cities and 向こうずねing lands. When he told how Mitra 補佐官d 確かな kings to 打ち勝つ their enemies, they paid scant 注意する to the 奇蹟s of Mitra, but they hung on the description of 戦う/戦い-lines, 機動力のある knights, and 作戦行動s of archers and spearmen. They harkened with keen dark 注目する,もくろむs and inscrutable countenances, and they went their ways without comment, and 注意するd with flattering intentness his 指示/教授/教育s as to the working of アイロンをかける, and kindred arts.
Before his coming they had filched steel 武器s and armor from the Bossonians and Zingarans, or had 大打撃を与えるd out their own 天然のまま 武器 from 巡査 and bronze. Now a new world opened to them, and the clang of sledges re-echoed throughout the land. And Gorm, by virtue of this new (手先の)技術, began to 主張する his dominance over other 一族/派閥s, partly by war, partly by (手先の)技術 and 外交, in which latter art he excelled all other barbarians.
Picts now (機の)カム and went 自由に into Aquilonia, under 安全な-行為/行う, and they returned with more (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) as to armor-(1)偽造する/(2)徐々に進むing and sword-making. More, they entered Aquilonia's mercenary armies, to the unspeakable disgust of the sturdy Bossonians. Aquilonia's kings toyed with the idea of playing the Picts against the Cimmerians, and かもしれない thus destroying both menaces, but they were too busy with their 政策s of 侵略 in the south and east to 支払う/賃金 much 注意する to the ばく然と known lands of the west, from which more and more stocky 軍人s 群れているd to take service の中で the mercenaries.
These 軍人s, their service 完全にするd, went 支援する to their wilderness with good ideas of civilized 戦争, and that contempt for civilization which arises from familiarity with it. 派手に宣伝するs began to (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域 in the hills, 集会- 解雇する/砲火/射撃s smoked on the 高さs, and savage sword-製造者s 大打撃を与えるd their steel on a thousand anvils. By intrigues and forays too 非常に/多数の and devious to enumerate, Gorm became 長,指導者 of 長,指導者s, the nearest approach to a king the Picts had had in thousands of years. He had waited long; he was past middle age. But now he moved against the frontiers, not in 貿易(する), but in war.
Arus saw his mistake too late; he had not touched the soul of the pagan, in which lurked the hard fierceness of all the ages. His persuasive eloquence had not 原因(となる)d a ripple in the Pictish 良心. Gorm wore a corselet of silvered mail now, instead of the tiger-肌, but underneath he was 不変の — the everlasting barbarian, unmoved by theology or philosophy, his instincts 直す/買収する,八百長をするd unerringly on rapine and plunder.
The Picts burst on the Bossonian frontiers with 解雇する/砲火/射撃 and sword, not 覆う? in tiger-肌s and brandishing 巡査 axes as of yore, but in 規模-mail, (権力などを)行使するing 武器s of keen steel. As for Arus, he was brained by a drunken Pict, while making a last 成果/努力 to undo the work he had unwittingly done. Gorm was not without 感謝; he 原因(となる)d the skull of the slayer to be 始める,決める on the 最高の,を越す of the priest's cairn. And it is one of the grim ironies of the universe that the 石/投石するs which covered Arus's 団体/死体 should have been adorned with that last touch of barbarity—above a man to whom 暴力/激しさ and 血-vengeance were 反乱ing.
But the newer 武器s and mail were not enough to break the lines. For years the superior 軍備s and sturdy courage of the Bossonians held the invaders at bay, 補佐官d, when necessary, by 皇室の Aquilonian 軍隊/機動隊s. During this time the Hyrkanians (機の)カム and went, and Zamora was 追加するd to the empire.
Then treachery from an 予期しない source broke the Bossonian lines. Before chronicling this treachery, it might be 井戸/弁護士席 to ちらりと見ること 簡潔に at the Aquilonian empire. Always a rich kingdom, untold wealth had been rolled in by conquest, and sumptuous splendor had taken the place of simple and hardy living. But degeneracy had not yet sapped the kings and the people; though 覆う? in silks and cloth-of-gold, they were still a 決定的な, virile race. But arrogance was 取って代わるing their former 簡単. They 扱う/治療するd いっそう少なく powerful people with growing contempt, 徴収するing more and more 尊敬の印s on the 征服する/打ち勝つd. Argos, Zingara, Ophir, Zamora and the Shemite countries were 扱う/治療するd as subjugated 州s, which was 特に galling to the proud Zingarans, who often 反乱d, にもかかわらず savage 報復s.
Koth was 事実上 支流, 存在 under Aquilonia's '保護' against the Hyrkanians. But Nemedia the western empire had never been able to subdue, although the latter's 勝利s were of the 防御の sort, and were 一般に 達成するd with the 援助(する) of Hyperborean armies. During this period Aquilonia's only 敗北・負かすs were: her 失敗 to 別館 Nemedia; the 大勝する of an army sent into Cimmeria; and the almost 完全にする 破壊 of an army by the Aesir. Just as the Hyrkanians 設立する themselves unable to withstand the 激しい cavalry 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s of the Aquilonians, so the latter, 侵略するing the snow-countries, were 圧倒するd by the ferocious 手渡す-to-手渡す fighting of the Nordics. But Aquilonia's conquests were 押し進めるd to the Nilus, where a Stygian army was 敗北・負かすd with 広大な/多数の/重要な 虐殺(する), and the king of Stygia sent 尊敬の印—once at least—to コースを変える 侵略 of his kingdom. Brythunia was 減ずるd in a 一連の whirlwind wars, and 準備s were made to subjugate the 古代の 競争相手 at last—Nemedia.
With their glittering hosts 大いに 増加するd by mercenaries, the Aquilonians moved against their old-time 敵, and it seemed as if the thrust were 運命にあるd to 鎮圧する the last 影をつくる/尾行する of Nemedian independence. But 論争s arose between the Aquilonians and their Bossonian auxiliaries.
As the 必然的な result of 皇室の 拡大, the Aquilonians had become haughty and intolerant. They derided the ruder, unsophisticated Bossonians, and hard feeling grew between them—the Aquilonians despising the Bossonians and the latter resenting the 態度 of their masters — who now boldly called themselves such, and 扱う/治療するd the Bossonians like 征服する/打ち勝つd 支配するs, 税金ing them exorbitantly, and 徴集兵ing them for their wars of 領土の 拡大—wars the 利益(をあげる)s of which the Bossonians 株d little. Scarcely enough men were left in the marches to guard the frontier, and 審理,公聴会 of Pictish 乱暴/暴力を加えるs in their 母国s, whole Bossonian 連隊s やめる the Nemedian (選挙などの)運動をする and marched to the western frontier, where they 敗北・負かすd the dark-skinned invaders in a 広大な/多数の/重要な 戦う/戦い.
This desertion, however, was the direct 原因(となる) of Aquilonia's 敗北・負かす by the desperate Nemedians, and brought 負かす/撃墜する on the Bossonians the cruel wrath of the 帝国主義のs—intolerant and short-sighted as 帝国主義のs invariably are. Aquilonian 連隊s were 内密に brought to the 国境s of the marches, the Bossonian 長,指導者s were 招待するd to …に出席する a 広大な/多数の/重要な conclave, and, in the guise of an 探検隊/遠征隊 against the Picts, 禁止(する)d of savage Shemitish 兵士s were 4半期/4分の1d の中で the unsuspecting 村人s. The 非武装の 長,指導者s were 大虐殺d, the Shemites turned on their stunned hosts with たいまつ and sword, and the 装甲の 皇室の hosts were 投げつけるd ruthlessly on the unsuspecting people. From north to south the marches were 荒廃させるd and the Aquilonian armies marched 支援する from the 国境s, leaving a 廃虚d and 荒廃させるd land behind them.
And then the Pictish 侵略 burst in 十分な 力/強力にする along those 国境s. It was no mere (警察の)手入れ,急襲, but the 一致した 急ぐ of a whole nation, led by 長,指導者s who had served in Aquilonian armies, and planned and directed by Gorm—an old man now, but with the 解雇する/砲火/射撃 of his 猛烈な/残忍な ambition undimmed. This time there were no strong 塀で囲むd villages in their path, 乗組員を乗せた by sturdy archers, to 持つ/拘留する 支援する the 急ぐ until the 皇室の 軍隊/機動隊s could be brought up. The 残余s of the Bossonians were swept out of 存在, and the 血-mad barbarians 群れているd into Aquilonia, 略奪するing and 燃やすing, before the legions, warring again with the Nemedians, could be marched into the west. Zingara 掴むd this 適切な時期 to throw off the yoke, which example was followed by Corinthia and the Shemites. Whole 連隊s of mercenaries and vassals 反乱(を起こす)d and marched 支援する to their own countries, 略奪するing and 燃やすing as they went. The Picts 殺到するd irresistibly eastward, and host after host was trampled beneath their feet. Without their Bossonian archers the Aquilonians 設立する themselves unable to 対処する with the terrible arrow-解雇する/砲火/射撃 of the barbarians. From all parts of the empire legions were 解任するd to resist the onrush, while from the wilderness horde after horde 群れているd 前へ/外へ, in 明らかに inexhaustible 供給(する). And in the 中央 of this 大混乱, the Cimmerians swept 負かす/撃墜する from their hills, 完全にするing the 廃虚. They 略奪するd cities, 荒廃させるd the country, and retired into the hills with their plunder, but the Picts 占領するd the land they had over-run. And the Aquilonian empire went 負かす/撃墜する in 解雇する/砲火/射撃 and 血.
Then again the Hyrkanians 棒 from the blue east. The 撤退 of the 皇室の legions from Zamora was their incitement. Zamora fell 平易な prey to their thrusts, and the Hyrkanian king 設立するd his 資本/首都 in the largest city of the country. This 侵略 was from the 古代の Hyrkanian kingdom of Turan, on the shores of the inland sea, but another, more savage Hyrkanian thrust (機の)カム from the north. Hosts of steel-覆う? riders galloped around the northern extremity of the inland sea, 横断するd the icy 砂漠s, entered the steppes, 運動ing the aborigines before them, and 開始する,打ち上げるd themselves against the western kingdoms. These newcomers were not at first 同盟(する)s with the Turanians, but 小競り合いd with them as with the Hyborians; new drifts of eastern 軍人s bickered and fought, until all were 部隊d under a 広大な/多数の/重要な 長,指導者, who (機の)カム riding from the very shores of the eastern ocean. With no Aquilonian armies to …に反対する them, they were invincible. They swept over and subjugated Brythunia, and 荒廃させるd southern Hyperborea, and Corinthia. They swept into the Cimmerian hills, 運動ing the 黒人/ボイコット-haired barbarians before them, but の中で the hills, where cavalry was いっそう少なく effectual, the Cimmerians turned on them, and only a disorderly 退却/保養地, at the end of a whole day of 血まみれの fighting, saved the Hyrkanian hosts from 完全にする annihilation.
While these events had been transpiring, the kingdoms of Shem had 征服する/打ち勝つd their 古代の master, Koth, and had been 敗北・負かすd in an 試みる/企てるd 侵略 of Stygia. But scarcely had they 完全にするd their degradation of Koth, when they were 侵略(する)/超過(する) by the Hyrkanians, and 設立する themselves subjugated by sterner masters than the Hyborians had ever been. 一方/合間 the Picts had made themselves 完全にする masters of Aquilonia, 事実上 blotting out the inhabitants. They had broken over the 国境s of Zingara, and thousands of Zingarans, 逃げるing the 虐殺(する) into Argos, threw themselves on the mercy of the 西方の-広範囲にわたる Hyrkanians, who settled them in Zamora as 支配するs. Behind them as they fled, Argos was enveloped in the 炎上 and 虐殺(する) of Pictish conquest, and the slayers swept into Ophir and 衝突/不一致d with the 西方の-riding Hyrkanians. The latter, after their conquest of Shem, had overthrown a Stygian army at the Nilus and over-run the country as far south as the 黒人/ボイコット kingdom of アマゾン, of whose people they brought 支援する thousands as 捕虜s, settling them の中で the Shemites. かもしれない they would have 完全にするd their conquests in Stygia, 追加するing it to their 広げるing empire, but for the 猛烈な/残忍な thrusts of the Picts against their western conquests.
Nemedia, unconquerable by Hyborians, reeled between the riders of the east and the swordsmen of the west, when a tribe of Aesir, wandering 負かす/撃墜する from their 雪の降る,雪の多い lands, (機の)カム into the kingdom, and were engaged as mercenaries; they 証明するd such able 軍人s that they not only (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域 off the Hyrkanians, but 停止(させる)d the eastward 前進する of the Picts.
The world at that time 現在のs some such picture: a 広大な Pictish empire, wild, rude and 野蛮な, stretches from the coasts of Vanaheim in the north to the southern-most shores of Zingara. It stretches east to 含む all Aquilonia except Gunderland, the northern-most 州, which, as a separate kingdom in the hills, 生き残るd the 落ちる of the empire, and still 持続するs its independence. The Pictish empire also 含むs Argos, Ophir, the western part of Koth, and the western-most lands of Shem. …に反対するd to this 野蛮な empire is the empire of the Hyrkanians, of which the northern 境界s are the 荒廃させるd lines of Hyperborea, and the southern, the 砂漠s south of the lands of Shem. Zamora, Brythunia, the 国境 Kingdom, Corinthia, most of Koth, and all the eastern lands of Shem are 含むd in this empire. The 国境s of Cimmeria are 損なわれていない; neither Pict nor Hyrkanian has been able to subdue these warlike barbarians. Nemedia, 支配するd by the Aesir mercenaries, resists all 侵略s. In the north Nordheim, Cimmeria and Nemedia separate the 征服する/打ち勝つing races, but in the south, Koth has become a 戦う/戦い-ground where Picts and Hyrkanians war incessantly. いつかs the eastern 軍人s 追放する the barbarians from the kingdom 完全に; again the plains and cities are in the 手渡すs of the western invaders. In the far south, Stygia, shaken by the Hyrkanian 侵略, is 存在 encroached upon by the 広大な/多数の/重要な 黒人/ボイコット kingdoms. And in the far north, the Nordic tribes are restless, warring continually with the Cimmerians, and 広範囲にわたる the Hyperborean frontiers.
Gorm was 殺害された by Hialmar, a 長,指導者 of the Nemedian ALsir. He was a very old man, nearly a hundred years old. In the seventy-five years which had elapsed since he first heard the tale of empires from the lips of Arus — a long time in the life of a man, but a 簡潔な/要約する space in the tale of nations — he had welded an empire from 逸脱するing savage 一族/派閥s, he had overthrown a civilization. He who had been born in a mud-塀で囲むd, wattle-roofed hut, in his old age sat on golden 王位s, and gnawed 共同のs of beef 現在のd to him on golden dishes by naked slave-girls who were the daughters of kings. Conquest and the acquiring of wealth altered not the Pict; out of the 廃虚s of the 鎮圧するd civilization no new culture arose 不死鳥/絶品-like. The dark 手渡すs which 粉々にするd the artistic glories of the 征服する/打ち勝つd never tried to copy them. Though he sat の中で the glittering 廃虚s of 粉々にするd palaces and 覆う? his hard 団体/死体 in the silks of vanquished kings, the Pict remained the eternal barbarian, ferocious, elemental, 利益/興味d only in the naked primal 原則s of life, unchanging, unerring in his instincts which were all for war and plunder, and in which arts and the cultured 進歩 of humanity had no place. Not so with the Aesir who settled in Nemedia. These soon 可決する・採択するd many of the ways of their civilized 同盟(する)s, 修正するd powerfully, however, by their own intensely virile and 外国人 culture.
For a short age Pict and Hyrkanian snarled at each other over the 廃虚s of the world they had 征服する/打ち勝つd. Then began the glacier ages, and the 広大な/多数の/重要な Nordic drift. Before the southward moving ice-fields the northern tribes drifted, 運動ing kindred 一族/派閥s before them. The Aesir blotted out the 古代の kingdom of Hyperborea, and across its 廃虚s (機の)カム to 支配するs with the Hyrkanians. Nemedia had already become a Nordic kingdom, 支配するd by the 子孫s of the Aesir mercenaries. Driven before the onrushing tides of Nordic 侵略, the Cimmerians were on the march, and neither army nor city stood before them. They 殺到するd across and 完全に destroyed the kingdom of Gunderland, and marched across 古代の Aquilonia, hewing their irresistible way through the Pictish hosts. They 敗北・負かすd the Nordic-Nemedians and 解雇(する)d some of their cities, but did not 停止(させる). They continued eastward, 倒すing a Hyrkanian army on the 国境s of Brythunia.
Behind them hordes of ALsir and Vanir 群れているd into the lands, and the Pictish empire reeled beneath their 一打/打撃s. Nemedia was overthrown, and the half-civilized Nordics fled before their wilder kinsmen, leaving the cities of Nemedia 廃虚d and 砂漠d. These 逃げるing Nordics, who had 可決する・採択するd the 指名する of the older kingdom, and to whom the 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 Nemedian henceforth 言及するs, (機の)カム into the 古代の land of Koth, expelled both Picts and Hyrkanians, and 補佐官d the people of Shem to throw off the Hyrkanian yoke. All over the western world, the Picts and Hyrkanians were staggering before this younger, fiercer people. A 禁止(する)d of ALsir drove the eastern riders from Brythunia and settled there themselves, 可決する・採択するing the 指名する for themselves. The Nordics who had 征服する/打ち勝つd Hyperborea 攻撃する,非難するd their eastern enemies so savagely that the dark-skinned 子孫s of the Lemurians 退却/保養地d into the steppes, 押し進めるd irresistibly 支援する toward Vilayet.
一方/合間 the Cimmerians, wandering southeastward, destroyed the 古代の Hyrkanian kingdom of Turan, and settled on the southwestern shores of the inland sea. The 力/強力にする of the eastern 征服者/勝利者s was broken. Before the attacks of the Nordheimr and the Cimmerians, they destroyed all their cities, butchered such 捕虜s as were not fit to make the long march, and then, herding thousands of slaves before them, 棒 支援する into the mysterious east, skirting the northern 辛勝する/優位 of the sea, and 消えるing from western history, until they 棒 out of the east again, thousands of years later, as Huns, Mongols, Tatars and Turks. With them in their 退却/保養地 went thousands of Zamorians and Zingarans, who were settled together far to the east, formed a mixed race, and 現れるd ages afterward as gypsies.
一方/合間, also, a tribe of Vanir adventurers had passed along the Pictish coast southward, 荒廃させるd 古代の Zingara, and come into Stygia, which, 抑圧するd by a cruel aristocratic 判決,裁定 class, was staggering under the thrusts of the 黒人/ボイコット kingdoms to the south. The red-haired Vanir led the slaves in a general 反乱, overthrew the 統治するing class, and 始める,決める themselves up as a caste of 征服者/勝利者s. They subjugated the northern-most 黒人/ボイコット kingdoms, and built a 広大な southern empire, which they called Egypt. From these red-haired 征服者/勝利者s the earlier Pharaohs 誇るd 降下/家系.
The western world was now 支配するd by Nordic barbarians. The Picts still held Aquilonia and part of Zingara, and the western coast of the continent. But east to Vilayet, and from the 北極の circle to the lands of Shem, the only inhabitants were roving tribes of Nordheimr, excepting the Cimmerians, settled in the old Turanian kingdom. There were no cities anywhere, except in Stygia and the lands of Shem; the 侵略するing tides of Picts, Hyrkanians, Cimmerians and Nordics had levelled them in 廃虚s, and the once 支配的な Hyborians had 消えるd from the earth, leaving scarcely a trace of their 血 in the veins of their 征服者/勝利者s. Only a few 指名するs of lands, tribes and cities remained in the languages of the barbarians, to come 負かす/撃墜する through the centuries connected with distorted legend and fable, until the whole history of the Hyborian age was lost sight of in a cloud of myths and fantasies. Thus in the speech of the gypsies ぐずぐず残るd the 条件 Zingara and Zamora; the Aesir who 支配するd Nemedia were called Nemedians, and later 人物/姿/数字d in Irish history, and the Nordics who settled in Brythunia were known as Brythunians, Brythons or Britons.
There was no such thing, at that time, as a 強固にする/合併する/制圧するd Nordic empire. As always, the tribes had each its own 長,指導者 or king, and they fought savagely の中で themselves. What their 運命 might have been will not be known, because another terrific convulsion of the earth, carving out the lands as they are known to moderns, 投げつけるd all into 大混乱 again. 広大な/多数の/重要な (土地などの)細長い一片s of the western coast sank; Vanaheim and western Asgard—uninhabited and glacier-haunted wastes for a hundred years—消えるd beneath the waves. The ocean flowed around the mountains of western Cimmeria to form the North Sea; these mountains became the islands later known as England, Scotland and Ireland, and the waves rolled over what had been the Pictish wilderness and the Bossonian marches. In the north the Baltic Sea was formed, cutting Asgard into the 半島s later known as Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and far to the south the Stygian continent was broken away from the 残り/休憩(する) of the world, on the line of cleavage formed by the river Nilus in its 西方の 傾向. Over Argos, western Koth and the western lands of Shem, washed the blue ocean men later called the Mediterranean. But where land sank どこかよそで, a 広大な expanse west of Stygia rose out of the waves, forming the whole western half of the continent of Africa.
The buckling of the land thrust up 広大な/多数の/重要な mountain 範囲s in the central part of the northern continent. Whole Nordic tribes were blotted out, and the 残り/休憩(する) 退却/保養地d eastward. The 領土 about the slowly 乾燥した,日照りのing inland sea was not 影響する/感情d, and there, on the western shores, the Nordic tribes began a pastoral 存在, living in more or いっそう少なく peace with the Cimmerians, and 徐々に mixing with them. In the west the 残余s of the Picts, 減ずるd by the cataclysm once more to the status of 石/投石する-age savages, began, with the incredible virility of their race, once more to 所有する the land, until, at a later age, they were overthrown by the 西方の drift of the Cimmerians and Nordics. This was so long after the breaking-up of the continent that only meaningless legends told of former empires.
This drift comes within the reach of modern history and need not be repeated. It resulted from a growing 全住民 which thronged the steppes west of the inland sea—which still later, much 減ずるd in size, was known as the Caspian—to such an extent that 移住 became an 経済的な necessity. The tribes moved southward, northward and 西方の, into those lands now known as India, Asia Minor and central and western Europe.
They (機の)カム into these countries as Aryans. But there were variations の中で these 原始の Aryans, some of which are still 認めるd today, others which have long been forgotten. The blond Achaians, Gauls and Britons, for instance, were 子孫s of pure-血d Aesir. The Nemedians of Irish legendry were the Nemedian Aesir. The Danes were 子孫s of pure-血d Vanir; the Goths — ancestors of the other Scandinavian and Germanic tribes, 含むing the Anglo-Saxons—were 子孫s of a mixed race whose elements 含む/封じ込めるd Vanir, Aesir and Cimmerian 緊張するs. The Gaels, ancestors of the Irish and Highland Scotch, descended from pure-血d Cimmerian 一族/派閥s. The Cymric tribes of Britain were a mixed Nordic-Cimmerian race which に先行するd the 純粋に Nordic Britons into the 小島s, and thus gave rise to a legend of Gaelic 優先. The Cimbri who fought Rome were of the same 血, 同様に as the Gimmerai of the Assyrians and Grecians, and Gomer of the Hebrews. Other 一族/派閥s of the Cimmerians adventured east of the 乾燥した,日照りのing inland sea, and a few centuries later mixed with Hyrkanian 血, returned 西方の as Scythians. The 初めの ancestors of the Gaels gave their 指名する to modern Crimea.
The 古代の Sumerians had no 関係 with the western race. They were a mixed people, of Hyrkanian and Shemitish 血s, who were not taken with the 征服者/勝利者s in their 退却/保養地. Many tribes of Shem escaped that 捕らわれた, and from pure-血d Shemites, or Shemites mixed with Hyborian or Nordic 血, were descended the Arabs, Israelites, and other straighter-featured Semites. The Canaanites, or Alpine Semites, traced their 降下/家系 from Shemitish ancestors nuxed with the Kushites settled の中で them by their Hyrkanian masters; the Elamites were a typical race of this type. The short, 厚い-四肢d Etruscans, base of the Roman race, were 子孫s of a people of mixed Stygian, Hyrkanian and Pictish 緊張するs, and 初めは lived in the 古代の kingdom of Koth. The Hyrkanians, 退却/保養地ing to the eastern shores of the continent, 発展させるd into the tribes later known as Tatars, Huns, Mongols and Turks.
The origins of other races of the modern world may be 類似して traced; in almost every 事例/患者, older far than they realize, their history stretches 支援する into the もやs of the forgotten Hyborian age...
