FOR their honeymoon Rollo Lenox Smeaton Aubrey, Earl of Redgrave, and his bride, Lilla Zaidie, leave the earth on a visit to the moon and the 主要な／長／主犯 惑星s, their 単独の companion 存在 Andrew Murgatroyd, an old engineer who had superintended the building of the Asfronef, in which the 旅行 is made. By means of the "R. 軍隊," or Anti-Gravitational 軍隊, of the secret of which Lord Redgrave is the 単独の possessor, they are able to navigate with precision and safety the limitless ocean of space. Their adventures on the Moon, 火星, and Venus have been 述べるd in the first three stories of the series.
"FIVE hundred million miles from the earth and forty-seven million miles from Jupiter," said his lordship, as he （機の）カム into breakfast on the morning of the twenty-eighth day after leaving Venus.
During this 簡潔な／要約する period the Astronef had recrossed the 軌道s of the Earth and 火星 and passed through that marvellous 地域 of the Solar System, the Belt of the Asteroids. Astern, the レコード of the Sun 刻々と 減らすd, and ahead, the grey-blue 形態／調整 of Jupiter, the 巨大（な） of the Solar System, had grown larger and larger until now they could see it as it had never been seen before—a gigantic three-４半期/4分の1 moon filling up the whole Heavens in 前線 of them almost from Zenith to Nadir.
Its four 衛星s, Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Calisto were distinctly 明白な to the naked 注目する，もくろむ, and Europa and Ganymede happened to be in such a position with regard to the Astronef that her 乗組員 could see not only the 有望な 味方するs turned に向かって the sun, but also the 黒人／ボイコット 影をつくる／尾行する-位置／汚点／見つけ出すs which they cast on the cloud-隠すd 直面する of the 抱擁する 惑星.
"Five hundred million miles!" said Zaidie, with a little shiver, "that seems an awful long way from home, doesn't it? Though, of course, we've brought our home with us to a 確かな extent. Still I often wonder what they are thinking about us on the dear old earth. I don't suppose anyone ever 推定する／予想するs to see us again. However, it's no good getting homesick in the middle of a 旅行 when you're outward bound."
They were now 落ちるing very 速く に向かって the 抱擁する 惑星, and, as the 三日月 approached the 十分な they were able to 診察する the mysterious 禁止（する）d as human 観察者／傍聴者s had never 診察するd them before. For hours they sat almost silent at their telescopes, trying to 調査（する） the mystery which has baffled human science since the days of Gallileo.
"I believe I was 権利, or, in other words, the people I got the idea from are," said Redgrave 結局, as they approached the 軌道 of Calisto, which 回転するs at a distance of about eleven hundred thousand miles from the surface of the 惑星.
"Those belts are made of clouds or vapour in some 行う／開催する／段階 or other. The lightest—the ones along the 赤道 and what we should call the Temperate Zones—are the highest, and therefore coolest and whitest. The dark ones are the lowest and hottest. I daresay they are more like what we call 火山の clouds. Do you see how they keep changing? That's what's bothered our 天文学者s. Look at that big one yonder a bit to the north, going from brown to red. I suppose that's something like the famous red 位置／汚点／見つけ出す which they have been puzzling about. What do you make of it?"
"井戸／弁護士席," said Zaidie, looking up from her telescope, "it's やめる 確かな that the glare must come from underneath. It can't be sunlight, because the poor old sun doesn't seem to have strength enough to make a decent sunset or sunrise here, and look how it's running along to the 西方の! What does that mean, do you think?"
"I should say it means that some half-formed Jovian Continent has been flung sky high by a big burst-up underneath, and that's the 炎 of the incandescent stuff running along. Just fancy a continent, say ten times the size of Asia, 存在 分裂（する） up and sent 飛行機で行くing in a few moments like that. Look, there's another one to the north. On the whole, dear, I don't think we should find the 気候 on the other 味方する of those clouds very salubrious. Still, as they say the atmosphere of Jupiter is about ten thousand miles 厚い, we may be able to get 近づく enough to see something of what's going on.
"一方／合間, here comes Calisto. Look at his 影をつくる／尾行する 飛行機で行くing across the clouds. And there's Ganymede coming up after him, and Europa behind him. Talk about （太陽，月の）食／失墜s, they must be about as ありふれた here as 雷雨s are with us."
"We don't have a 雷雨 every day," 訂正するd Zaidie, "but on Jupiter they have two or three （太陽，月の）食／失墜s every day. 一方／合間, there goes Jupiter himself. What a difference distance makes! This little thing is only a trifle larger than our moon, and it's hiding everything else."
As she was speaking, the 十分な-orbed レコード of Calisto, 手段ing nearly three thousand miles across, swept between them and the 惑星. It shone with a （疑いを）晴らす, somewhat 赤みを帯びた light like that of 火星. The Astronef was feeling its attraction 堅固に, and Redgrave went to the levers and turned on about a fifth of the R. 軍隊 to 避ける 接触する with it.
"Another dead world," said Redgrave, as the surface of Calisto 回転するd 速く beneath them, "or, at any 率, a dying one. There must be an atmosphere of some sort, or else that snow and ice wouldn't be there, and the land would be either 黒人／ボイコット or white as it was on the Moon. It's not 価値（がある） while 上陸 there. Ganymede will be much more 利益／興味ing."
Zaidie took half-a-dozen photographs of the surface of Calisto while they were passing it at a distance of about a hundred miles, and then went to get lunch ready.
When they got on to the upper deck again Calisto was already a half-moon in the upper sky nearly five hundred thousand miles away and the 十分な orb of Ganymede, 向こうずねing with a pale golden light, lay outspread beneath them. A thin, bluish-grey arc of the 巨大（な） 惑星 over-arched its western 辛勝する／優位.
"I think we shall find something like a world here," said Zaidie, when she had taken her first look through her telescope. "There's an atmosphere and what looks like thin clouds. Continents, and oceans, too! And what is that light 向こうずねing up between the breaks? Isn't it something like our Aurora?"
As the Astronef fell に向かって the surface of Ganymede she crossed its northern 政治家, and the nearer they got the plainer it became that a light very like the terrestrial Aurora was playing about it, illuminating the thin, yellow clouds with a bluish-violet light, which made magnificent contrasts of colouring amongst them.
"Let us go 負かす／撃墜する there and see what it's like," said Zaidie. "There must be something nice under all those lovely colours."
Redgrave checked the R. 軍隊 and the Astronef fell obliquely across the 政治家 に向かって the 赤道. As they approached the luminous clouds Redgrave turned it on again, and they sank slowly through a glowing もや of innumerable colours, until the surface of Ganymede （機の）カム into plain 見解（をとる） about ten miles below them.
What they saw then was the strangest sight they had beheld since they had left the Earth. As far as their 注目する，もくろむs could reach, the surface of Ganymede was covered with 広大な 整然とした patches, mostly rectangular, of what they at first took for ice, but which they soon 設立する to be a something that was self-illuminating.
"Glorified hot houses, as I'm alive," exclaimed Redgrave. "Whole cities under glass, fields, too, and lit by electricity or something very like it. Zaidie, we shall find human 存在s 負かす／撃墜する there."

As he said this about twenty streams of an 激しい bluish light suddenly 発射 up all 一連の会議、交渉／完成する them, concentrating themselves upon the 船体 of the Astronef, which was now about a mile and a half from the surface. The light was so 激しい that the rays of the sun were lost in it. They looked at each other, and 設立する that their 直面するs were almost perfectly white in it. The plain and the city below had 消えるd.

"It's no good my lord; I don't know what devil's world we've got into now, but they won't work. If I thought that engines could be bewitched-—"
"Oh, nonsense, Andrew!" said his lordship rather testily. "It's perfectly simple; those people 負かす／撃墜する there, whoever they are, have got some way of demagnetising us, or else they've got the R. 軍隊 too, and they're 適用するing it against us to stop us going 負かす／撃墜する. 明らかに they don't want us. No, that's just to show us that they can stop us if they want to. The light's going 負かす／撃墜する. Begin dropping a bit. Don't start the プロペラs, but just go and see that the guns are all 権利 in 事例／患者 of 事故s."
The old engineer nodded and went 支援する to his engines, looking かなり 脅すd. As he spoke the brilliancy of the light faded 速く and the Astronef began to 沈む に向かって the surface.

When she was within a couple of hundred yards of the ground a winged car of exquisitely graceful 形態／調整, rose from the roof of one of the 抱擁する glass buildings nearest to them, flew 速く に向かって them, and after circling once 一連の会議、交渉／完成する the ドーム of the upper deck, ran の近くに と一緒に.

"What an exceedingly handsome man!" said Zaidie, as one of them stood up. "I never saw such a noble-looking 直面する in my life; it's half philosopher, half saint. Of course, you won't be jealous."
"Oh, nonsense!" he laughed. "It would be やめる impossible to imagine you in love with either. But he is handsome, and evidently friendly— there's no mistaking that. Answer him, Zaidie; you can do it better than I can." The car had now come の近くに と一緒に. "Now, please look as pleasant as you can; I am sure they are very friendly. A man with a 直面する like that couldn't mean any 害（を与える）."
The 人物／姿／数字 repeated the 動議s to Redgrave, who returned them, perhaps a trifle awkwardly. Then the car began to descend, and the 人物／姿／数字 beckoned to them to follow.
"You'd better go and 終わりにする／要約する, dear. From the gentleman's dress it seems pretty 冷淡な outside, though the 空気／公表する is evidently やめる breathable," said Redgrave, as the Astronef began to 減少（する） in company with the car. "At any 率, I'll try it first, and, if it isn't, we can put on our breathing-dresses."
When Zaidie had made her winter 洗面所, and Redgrave had 設立する the 空気／公表する to be やめる respirable, but of 北極の 冷淡な, they went 負かす／撃墜する the gangway ladder about twenty minutes later.

Zaidie unhesitatingly held out hers, and a strange thrill ran through her as she felt them for the first time clasped gently by other than earthly 手渡すs, for the Venus folk had only been able to pat and 一打／打撃 with their gentle little paws, somewhat as a kitten might do. The 人物／姿／数字 屈服するd its 長，率いる again and said something in a low, melodious 発言する／表明する, which was, of course, やめる unintelligible save for the evident friendliness of its トン. Then, 解放（する）ing her 手渡すs, he took Redgrave's in the same fashion, and then led the way に向かって a 広大な, ドームd building of 半分-opaque glass, or a 実体 which seemed to be something like a mixture of glass and mica, which appeared to be one of the 入り口 gates of the city.
When they reached it a 抱擁する sheet of 霜d glass rose silently from the ground. They passed through, and it fell behind them. They 設立する themselves in a 広大な／多数の／重要な oval antechamber along each 味方する of which stood ３倍になる 列／漕ぐ／騒動s of strangely 形態／調整d trees whose leaves gave off a subtle and most agreeable scent. The 気温 here was several degrees higher, in fact about that of an English spring day, and Zaidie すぐに threw open her big fur cloak 説:
"These good people seem to live in Winter Gardens, don't they? I don't think I shall want these things much while we're inside. I wonder what dear old Andrew would have thought of this if we could have 説得するd him to leave the ship."
They followed their host through the antechamber に向かって a magnificent pointed arch, raised on clusters of small 中心存在s each of a different coloured, 高度に polished 石／投石する which shone brilliantly in a light which seemed to come from nowhere. Another door, this time of pale, transparent, blue glass, rose as they approached; they passed under it and, as it fell behind them, half-a-dozen 人物／姿／数字s, かなり shorter and slighter than their host, （機の）カム 今後 to 会合，会う them. He took off his gloves and cape and 厚い outer covering, and they were glad to follow his example for the atmosphere was now that of a warm June day.
The attendants, as they evidently were, took their 包むs from them, looking at the furs and 一打／打撃ing them with evident wonder; but with nothing like the wonder which （機の）カム into their wild, soft grey 注目する，もくろむs when they looked at Zaidie, who, as usual when she arrived on a new world, was arrayed in one of her daintiest 衣装s.
Their host was now dressed in a tunic of a light blue 構成要素, which glistened with a lustre greater than that of the finest silk. It reached a little below his 膝s, and was 限定するd at the waist by a sash of the same colour hut of somewhat deeper hue. His feet and 脚s were covered with stockings of the same 構成要素 and colour, and his feet, which were small for his stature and exquisitely 形態／調整d, were shod with thin sandals of a 構成要素 which looked like soft felt, and which made no noise as he walked over the delicately coloured mosaic pavement of the street—for such it 現実に was—which ran past the gate.

Presently their host touched Redgrave on the shoulder and pointed to a four-wheeled car of light 枠組み and exquisite design, 含む／封じ込めるing seats for four besides the driver, or guide, who sat behind. He held out his 手渡す to Zaidie, and 手渡すd her to one of the 前線 seats just as an earth-born gentleman might have done. Then he 動議d to Redgrave to sit beside her, and 機動力のある behind them.
The car すぐに began to move silently, but with かなりの 速度(を上げる）, along the left-手渡す 味方する of the outer street, which, like all the others, was divided by 狭くする （土地などの）細長い一片s of russet-coloured grass and flowering shrubs.

It was やめる 平易な to distinguish between the sexes, although in stature they were almost equal.
The men were nearly all 着せる／賦与するd as their host was. The women were dressed in flowing 衣料品s something after the Greek style, but they were of brighter hues, and much more lavishly embroidered than the men's tunics were. They also wore much more jewellery. Indeed, some of the younger ones glittered from 長，率いる to foot with polished metal and gleaming 石／投石するs.

"Could anyone ever have dreamt of such a lovely place?" said Zaidie, after their wondering 注目する，もくろむs had become accustomed to the marvels about them, "and yet—oh dear, now I know what it reminds me of! Flammarion's 調書をとる／予約する, 'The End Of The World,' where he 述べるs the 残余s of the human race dying of 冷淡な and hunger on the 赤道 in places something like this. I suppose the life of poor Ganymede is giving out, and that's why they've got to live in glorified 水晶 Palaces like this, poor things."
"Poor things!" laughed Redgrave, "I'm afraid I can't agree with you there, dear. I never saw a jollier looking lot of people in my life. I daresay you're やめる 権利, but they certainly seem to 見解（をとる） their approaching end with かなりの equanimity."
"Don't be horrid, Lenox! Fancy talking in that 冷淡な-血d way about such delightful-looking people as these, why, they are even nicer than our dear bird-folk on Venus, and, of course, they are a 広大な／多数の／重要な 取引，協定 more like ourselves."
"Wherefore it stands to 推論する／理由 that they must be a 広大な／多数の／重要な 取引，協定 nicer!" he replied, with a ちらりと見ること which brought a brighter 紅潮／摘発する to her cheeks. Then he went on: "Ah, now I see the difference."
"What difference? Between what?"
"Between the daughter of Earth and the daughters of Ganymede," he replied. "You can blush, and I don't think they can. 港／避難所't you noticed that, although they have the most exquisite 肌s and beautiful 注目する，もくろむs and hair and all that sort of thing, not a man or woman of them has any colouring. I suppose that's the result of living for 世代s in a hothouse."
"Very likely," she said; "but has it struck you also that all the girls and women are either beautiful or handsome, and all the men, except the ones who seem to be servants or slaves, are something like Greek gods, or, at least, the sort of men you see on the Greek sculptures?"
"生き残り of the fittest, I 推定する. These will be the 子孫s of the highest races of Ganymede,—the people who conceived the idea of 長引かせるing human life like this and were able to carry it out. The inferior races would either 死なせる／死ぬ of 餓死 or become their servants. That's what will happen on Earth, and there is no 推論する／理由 why it shouldn't have happened here."
As he said this the car swung out 一連の会議、交渉／完成する a 幅の広い curve into the centre of the 広大な／多数の／重要な square, and a little cry of amazement broke from Zaidie's lips as her ちらりと見ること roamed over the multiplying splendours about her.
In the centre of the square, in the 中央 of smooth lawns and flower beds of every 考えられる 形態／調整 and colour, and groves of flowering trees, stood a 広大な／多数の／重要な, ドームd building, which they approached through an avenue of overarching trees interlaced with flowering creepers.
The car stopped at the foot of a ３倍になる flight of stairs of dazzling whiteness which led up to a 幅の広い, arched doorway. Several groups of people were ぱらぱら雨d about the avenue and steps and the wide terrace which ran along the 前線 of the building. They looked with keen, but perfectly 井戸／弁護士席-mannered surprise at their strange 訪問者s, and seemed to be discussing their 外見; but not a step was taken に向かって them nor was there the slightest 調印する of anything like vulgar curiosity.
"What perfect manners these dear people have!" said Zaidie, as they dismounted at the foot of the staircase. "I wonder what would happen if a couple of them were to be landed from a モーター car in 前線 of the （ワシントンの）連邦議会議事堂 at Washington. I suppose this is their （ワシントンの）連邦議会議事堂, and we've been brought here to be put through our facings. What a pity we can't talk to them. I wonder if they'd believe our story if we could tell it."
"I've no 疑問 they know something of it already," replied Redgrave;" they're evidently people of 巨大な 知能. Intellectually, I daresay, we're mere children compared with them, and it's やめる possible that they have developed senses of which we have no idea."
"And perhaps," 追加するd Zaidie, "all the time that we are talking to each other our friend here is 静かに reading everything that is going on in our minds."
Whether this was so or not their host gave no 調印する of comprehension. He led them up the steps and through the 広大な／多数の／重要な doorway where he was met by three splendidly dressed men even taller than himself.
"I feel beastly shabby の中で all these gorgeously attired personages," said Redgrave, looking 負かす／撃墜する at his plain tweed 控訴, as they were 行為／行うd with every manifestation of politeness along the magnificent vestibule beyond.
At the end of the vestibule another door opened, and they were 勧めるd into a large hall which was evidently a 会議-議会. At the その上の end of it were three semicircular 列／漕ぐ／騒動s of seats made of the polished silvery metal, and in the centre and raised わずかに above them another under a canopy of sky-blue silk. This seat and six others were 占領するd by men of most venerable 面, in spite of the fact that their hair was just as long and 厚い and glossy as their host's or even as Zaidie's own.
The 儀式 of introduction was exceedingly simple. Though they could not, of course, understand a word he said, it was evident from his eloquent gestures that their host 述べるd the way in which they had come from Space, and landed on the surface of the World of the 水晶 Cities, as Zaidie subsequently rechristened Ganymede.
The 大統領 rose and took them by both 手渡すs in turn.
The 大統領 of the 上院 or 会議 spoke a few 宣告，判決s in a 深い musical トン. Then their host, taking their 手渡すs, led them up to his seat, and the 大統領 rose and took them by both 手渡すs in turn. Then, with a 墓／厳粛／彫る／重大な smile of 迎える／歓迎するing, he bent his 長，率いる and 再開するd his seat. They joined 手渡すs in turn with each of the six 上院議員s 現在の, 屈服するd their 別れの（言葉，会）s in silence, and then went 支援する with their host to the car.
They ran 負かす／撃墜する the avenue, made a curving sweep 一連の会議、交渉／完成する to the left— for all the paths in the 広大な／多数の／重要な square were laid in curves, 明らかに to form a contrast to the straight streets—and presently stopped before the porch of one of the hundred palaces which surrounded it. This was their host's house, and their home during the 残り／休憩（する） of their sojourn on Ganymede.
It is, as I have already said, 大いに to be regretted that the 狭くする 限界s of these 簡潔な／要約する narratives make it impossible for me to 述べる in 詳細（に述べる） all the experiences of Lord Redgrave and his bride during their Honeymoon in Space. Hereafter I hope to have an 適切な時期 of doing so with the more ample 援助 of her ladyship's diary; but for the 現在の I must content myself with the 輪郭（を描く）s of the picture which she may some day 同意 to fill in.
The period of Ganymede's 革命 一連の会議、交渉／完成する its gigantic 最初の／主要な is seven days, three hours, and forty-three minutes, 事実上 a terrestrial week, and both of the daring 航海士s of Space 述べる this as the most 利益／興味ing and delightful week in their lives, not even excepting the period which they spent in the Eden of the Morning 星／主役にする.
There the inhabitants had never learnt to sin; here they had learnt the lesson that sin is mere foolishness, and that no really sensible or 適切に educated man or woman thinks 罪，犯罪 価値（がある） committing.
The life of the 水晶 Cities, of which they visited four in different parts of the 衛星, using the Astronef as their 乗り物, was one of 平和的な 産業 and 静める innocent enjoyment. It was やめる plain that their first impressions of this 老年の world were 訂正する. Outside the cities spread a 全世界の／万国共通の 砂漠 on which life was impossible. There was hardly any moisture in the thin atmosphere. The rivers had dwindled into rivulets and the seas into 広大な, shallow 沼s. The heat received from the Sun was only about a twenty-fifth of that received on the surface of the Earth, and this was drawn to the cities and collected and 保存するd under their glass ドームs by a number of 装置s which 陳列する，発揮するd superhuman 知能.
The dwindling 供給（する）s of water were hoarded in 広大な subterranean 貯蔵所s and by means of a perfect system of redistillation the priceless fluid was used over and over again both for human 目的s and for irrigating the land within the cities.
Still the total 量 was 刻々と 減らすing, for it was not only evaporating from the surface, but, as the orb 冷静な／正味のd more and more 速く に向かって its centre, it descended deeper and deeper below the surface, and could now only be reached by means of marvellously 建設するd borings and pumping 機械／機構 which 延長するd 負かす／撃墜する several miles into the ground.
The dwindling 蓄える／店 of heat in the centre of the little world, which had now 冷静な／正味のd through more than half its 本体，大部分／ばら積みの, was utilised for warming the 空気／公表する of the cities, and also to 運動 the 機械／機構 which propelled it through the streets and squares. All work was done by electricity developed 直接／まっすぐに from this source, which also actuated the repulsive engines which had 妨げるd the Astronef from descending.
In short, the inhabitants of Ganymede were engaged in a 安定した, ceaseless struggle to utilise the 満了する／死ぬing natural 軍隊s of their world to 長引かせる to the 最新の possible date their own lives and the exquisitely 精製するd civilisation to which they had 達成するd. They were, in fact, in 正確に／まさに the same position in which the distant 子孫s of the human race may one day be 推定する／予想するd to find themselves.
Their 国内の life, as Zaidie and Lenox saw it while they were the guests of their host, was the perfection of 簡単 and 慰安, and their public life was characterised by a 静かな but 激しい intellectuality which, as Zaidie had said, made them feel very much like children who had only just learnt to speak.
As they 所有するd magnificent telescopes, far より勝るing any on earth, the wanderers were able to 調査する, not only the Solar System, but the other systems far beyond its 限界s as no other of their 肉親，親類d had ever been able to do before. They did not look through or into the telescopes. The レンズ was turned upon the 反対する, which was thrown, enormously magnified, upon 審査するs of what looked something like ground glass some fifty feet square. It was thus that they saw, not only the whole 明白な surface of Jupiter as he 回転するd above them and they about him, but also their native earth, いつかs a pale silver レコード or 三日月 の近くに to the 辛勝する／優位 of the Sun, 明白な only in the morning and the evening of Jupiter, and at other times like a little 黒人／ボイコット 位置／汚点／見つけ出す crossing the glowing surface.
It was, of course, 必然的な that the Astronef—which Murgatroyd could not be 説得するd to leave once during their stay—should 証明する an 反対する of 激しい 利益／興味 to their hosts. They had solved the problem of the 決意／決議 of 軍隊s, and, as they were shown pictorially, a 大型船 had been made which 具体的に表現するd the 原則s of attraction and repulsion. It had risen from the surface of Ganymede, and then, かもしれない because its engines could not develop 十分な repulsive 軍隊, the tremendous pull of the 巨大（な） 惑星 had dragged it away. It had 消えるd through the cloud-belts に向かって the 炎上ing surface beneath—and the 実験 had never been repeated.
Here, however, was a 大型船 which had 現実に, as Redgrave had 納得させるd his hosts by means of celestial 地図／計画するs and 製図／抽選s of his own, left a 惑星 の近くに to the Sun, and 安全に crossed the tremendous 湾 of six hundred and fifty million miles which separated Jupiter from the centre of the system. Moreover he had twice 証明するd her 力／強力にするs by taking his host and two of his newly-made friends, the 長，指導者 天文学者s of Ganymede, on a short trip across space to Calisto and Europa, the second 衛星 of Jupiter, which, to their very 墓／厳粛／彫る／重大な 利益／興味 they 設立する had already passed the 行う／開催する／段階 in which Ganymede was, and had lapsed into the icy silence of death.
It was these two 旅行s which led to the last adventure of the Astronef in the Jovian System. Both Redgrave and Zaidie had 決定するd, at whatever 危険, to pass through the cloud-belts of Jupiter, and catch a glimpse, if only a glimpse, of a world in the making. Their host and the two 天文学者s, after a 確かな 量 of 静かな discussion, 受託するd their 招待 to …を伴って them, and on the morning of the eighth day after their 上陸 on Ganymede, the Astronef rose from the plain outside the 水晶 City, and directed her course に向かって the centre of the 広大な レコード of Jupiter.
She was followed by the telescopes of all the 観測所s until she 消えるd through the brilliant cloud-禁止（する）d, eighty-five thousand miles long and some five thousand miles 幅の広い, which stretched from east to west of the 惑星. At the same moment the voyagers lost sight of Ganymede and his sister 衛星s.
The 気温 of the 内部の of the Astronef began to rise as soon as the upper cloud-belt was passed. Under this, spread out a 広大な field of brown-red cloud, rent here and there into 穴を開けるs and gaps like those 嵐／襲撃する-cavities in the atmosphere of the Sun, which are 一般的に known as sun-位置／汚点／見つけ出すs. This lower stratum of cloud appeared to be the scene of terrific 嵐／襲撃するs, compared with which the fiercest earthly tempests were mere zephyrs.
After 落ちるing some five hundred miles その上の they 設立する themselves surrounded by what seemed an ocean of 解雇する／砲火／射撃, but still the 内部の 気温 had only risen from seventy to ninety-five. The engines were 井戸／弁護士席 under 支配（する）／統制する. Only about a fourth of the total R. 軍隊 was 存在 developed, and the Astronef was dropping 速く, but 刻々と.
Redgrave, who was in the conning-tower controlling the engines, beckoned to Zaidie and said:
"Shall we go on?"
"Yes," she said. "Now we've got as far as this I want to see what Jupiter is like, and where you are not afraid to go, I'll go."
"If I'm afraid at all it's only because you are with me, Zaidie," he replied, "but I've only got a fourth of the 力／強力にする turned on yet, so there's plenty of 利ざや."
The Astronef, therefore, continued to 沈む through what seemed to be a fathomless ocean of whirling, 炎ing clouds, and the 内部の 気温 went on rising slowly but 刻々と. Their guests, without showing the slightest 調印する of any emotion, walked about the upper deck now singly and now together, 明らかに 吸収するd by the strange scene about them.
At length, after they had been dropping for some five hours by Astronef time, one of them, uttering a sharp exclamation, pointed to an enormous 不和 about fifty miles away. A dull, red glare was streaming up out of it. The next moment the brown cloud-床に打ち倒す beneath them seemed to 分裂（する） up into enormous 花冠s of vapour, which whirled up on all 味方するs of them, and a few minutes later they caught their first glimpse of the true surface of Jupiter.

Through floating seas of misty steam they beheld what seemed to them to be 広大な continents 形態／調整 themselves and melt away into oceans of 炎上s. Whole mountain 範囲s of glowing 溶岩 were 投げつけるd up miles high to take 形態／調整 for an instant and then 落ちる away again, leaving fathomless 湾s of fiery もや in their place.
Then waves of molten 事柄 rose up again out of the 湾s, tens of miles high and hundreds of miles long, 殺到するd 今後, and met with a concussion like that of millions of earthly 雷鳴-clouds. Minute after minute they remained writhing and struggling with each other. flinging up spurts of 炎上ing 事柄 far above their crests. Other waves followed them, climbing up their bases as a sea-殺到する runs up the 味方する of a smooth, slanting 激しく揺する. Then from the 中央 of them a jet of living 解雇する／砲火／射撃 leapt up hundreds of miles into the lurid atmosphere above, and then, with a 衝突，墜落 and a roar which shook the 広大な Jovian firmament, the 戦う／戦いing 溶岩-waves would 分裂（する） apart and 沈む 負かす／撃墜する into the all-surrounding 解雇する／砲火／射撃-ocean, like two grappling 巨大（な）s who had strangled each other in their final struggle.
"It's just Hell let loose!" said Murgatroyd to himself as he looked 負かす／撃墜する upon the terrific scene through one of the portholes of the engine-room; "and, with all 尊敬（する）・点 to my lord and her ladyship, those that come this 近づく almost deserve to stop in it."
一方／合間, Redgrave and Zaidie and their three guests were so 吸収するd in the tremendous spectacle, that for a few moments no one noticed that they were dropping faster and faster に向かって the world which Murgatroyd, によれば his lights, had not inaptly 述べるd. As for Zaidie, all her 恐れるs were for the time 存在 lost in wonder, until she saw her husband take a swift ちらりと見ること 一連の会議、交渉／完成する 上向きs and downwards, and then go up into the conning-tower. She followed him quickly, and said:
"What is the 事柄, Lenox, are we 落ちるing too quickly?"
"Much faster than we should," he replied, sending a signal to Murgatroyd to 増加する the 軍隊 by three-tenths.
The answering signal （機の）カム 支援する, but still the Astronef continued to 落ちる with terrific rapidity, and the awful landscape beneath them—a landscape of 解雇する／砲火／射撃 and 大混乱—broadened out and became more and more 際立った.
He sent two more signals 負かす／撃墜する in quick succession. Three-fourths of the whole repulsive 力／強力にする of the engines was now 存在 発揮するd, a 軍隊 which would have been 十分な to hurl the Astronef up from the surface of the Earth like a feather in a whirlwind. Her downward course became a little slower, but still she did not stop. Zaidie, white to the lips, looked 負かす／撃墜する upon the hideous scene beneath and slipped her 手渡す through Redgrave's arm. He looked at her for an instant and then turned his 長，率いる away with a jerk, and sent 負かす／撃墜する the last signal.
The whole energy of the engines was now directing the 最大限 of the R. 軍隊 against the surface of Jupiter, but still, as every moment passed in a speechless agony of 逮捕, it grew nearer and nearer. The 解雇する／砲火／射撃-waves 機動力のある higher and higher, the roar of the fiery 殺到するs grew louder and louder. Then, in a momentary なぎ, he put his arm 一連の会議、交渉／完成する her, drew her の近くに up to him, and kissed her and said:
"That's all we can do, dear. We've come too の近くに and he's too strong for us."
She returned his kiss and said やめる 刻々と:
"井戸／弁護士席, at any 率, I'm with you, and it won't last long, will it?"
"Not very long now, I'm afraid," he said between his clenched teeth.
Almost the next moment they felt a little jerk beneath their feet— a jerk 上向きs; and Redgrave shook himself out of the half stupor into which he was 落ちるing and said:
"Hallo, what's that! I believe we're stopping—yes, we are— and we're beginning to rise, too. Look, dear, the clouds are coming 負かす／撃墜する upon us—急速な／放蕩な too! I wonder what sort of 奇蹟 that is. Ay, what's the 事柄, little woman?"
Zaidie's 長，率いる had dropped ひどく on his shoulder. A ちらりと見ること showed him that she had fainted. He could do nothing more in the conning-tower, so he 選ぶd her up and carried her に向かって the companion-way, past his three guests, who were standing in the middle of the upper deck 一連の会議、交渉／完成する a （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する on which lay a large sheet of paper.
He took her below and laid her on her bed, and in a few minutes he had brought her to and told her that it was all 権利. Then he gave her a drink of brandy and water, and went 切り開く／タクシー／不正アクセス on to the upper deck. As he reached the 最高の，を越す of the stairway one of the 天文学者s （機の）カム に向かって him with the sheet of paper in his 手渡す, smiling 厳粛に, and pointing to a sketch upon it.
He took the paper under one of the electric lights and looked at it. The sketch was a 計画（する） of the Jovian System. There were some 調印するs written along one 味方する, which he did not understand, but he divined that they were 計算／見積りs. Still, there was no mistaking the diagram. There was a circle 代表するing the 抱擁する 本体，大部分／ばら積みの of Jupiter; there were four smaller circles at 変化させるing distances in a nearly straight line from it, and between the nearest of these and the 惑星 was the 人物／姿／数字 of the Astronef, with an arrow pointing 上向きs.
"Ah, I see!" he said, forgetting for a moment that the other did not understand him, "That was the 奇蹟! The four 衛星s （機の）カム into line with us just as the pull of Jupiter was getting too much for our engines, and their 連合させるd pull just turned the 規模. 井戸／弁護士席, thank God for that, sir, for in a few minutes more we should have been cinders!"
The 天文学者 smiled again as he took the paper 支援する. 一方／合間 the Astronef was 急ぐing 上向き like a meteor through the clouds. In ten minutes the 限界s of the Jovian atmosphere were passed. 星／主役にするs and gems and 惑星s 炎d out of the 黒人／ボイコット 丸天井 of Space, and the 広大な／多数の／重要な レコード of the World that Is to Be once more covered the 床に打ち倒す of Space beneath them—an ocean of cloud, covering continents of 溶岩 and seas of 炎上.
They passed Io and Europa, which changed from new to 十分な moons as they sped by に向かって the Sun, and then the golden yellow 三日月 of Ganymede also began to fill out to the half and 十分な レコード, and by the tenth hour of earth-time after they had risen from its surface, the Astronef was once more lying beside the gate of the 水晶 City.
At midnight on the second night after their return, the （犯罪の）一味d 形態／調整 of Saturn, …に出席するd by his eight 衛星s, hung in the zenith magnificently 招待するing. The Astronef's engines had been 補充するd after the exhaustion of their struggle with the might of Jupiter. Zaidie and Lenox said 別れの（言葉，会） to their friends of the dying world. The doors of the 空気／公表する 議会 の近くにd. The signal tinkled in the engine-room, and a few moments later a blur of white lights on the brown background of the surrounding 砂漠 was all they could distinguish of the 水晶 City under whose ドームs they had seen and learnt so much.
