For their honeymoon Rollo Lenox Smeaton Aubrey, Earl of Redgrave, and his bride, Lilla Zaidie, leave the earth on a visit to the Moon and the 主要な／長／主犯 惑星s, their 単独の companion 存在 Andrew Murgatroyd, an old engineer who had superintended the building of the Astronef, in which the 旅行 is made. By means of the "R 軍隊," or Anti-Gravitational 軍隊, of the secret of which Lord Redgrave is the 単独の possessor, they are able to navigate with precision and safety the limitless ocean of Space. Their adventures on the Moon, 火星, Venus, and Jupiter have been 述べるd in the first four stories of the series.

THE 親族 position of the two 巨大（な）s of the Solar System at the moment when the Astronef left the surface of Ganymede, the third and largest 衛星 of Jupiter, was such that she had to make a 旅行 of rather more than 340,000,000 miles before she passed within the 限定するs of the Saturnian System.

At first her 速度(を上げる）, as shown by the 観察s which Redgrave took by means of 器具s designed for such a voyage by Professor Rennick, was comparatively slow. This was 予定 to the tremendous "pull" or attraction of Jupiter and its four moons on the fabric of the 星／主役にする 航海士; but this backward drag 速く 減少（する）d as the pull of Saturn and his System began to overmaster that of Jupiter.

It so happened, too, that Uranus, the next outer 惑星 of the Solar System, 回転するing 一連の会議、交渉／完成する the Sun at the tremendous distance of more than 1,700,000,000 miles, was approaching its 合同 with Saturn, and thus the pull of the two 抱擁する orbs and their systems of 衛星s 行為／法令／行動するd together on the tiny 本体，大部分／ばら積みの of the Astronef, producing a constant acceleration of 速度(を上げる）.

Jupiter and his System dropped behind, 沈むing, as it seemed to the wanderers, 負かす／撃墜する into the bottomless 湾 of Space, but still forming by far the most brilliant and splendid 反対する in the skies. The far distant Sun which, seen from the Saturnian System, has only about a ninetieth of the superficial extent which he 現在のs to the Earth, dwindled away 速く until it began to look like a 抱擁する 惑星, with the Earth, Venus, 火星, and 水銀柱，温度計 as 衛星s. Beyond the 軌道 of Saturn, Uranus, with his eight moons, was 向こうずねing with the lustre of a 星／主役にする of the first magnitude, and far above and beyond him again hung the pale レコード of Neptune, the outer guard of the Solar System, separated from the Sun by a 湾 of more than 2,750,000,000 miles.

When two-thirds of the distance between Jupiter and Saturn had been 横断するd, Saturn lay beneath them like a 広大な globe surrounded by an enormous circular ocean of many-coloured 解雇する／砲火／射撃, divided, as it were, by circular shores of shade and 不明瞭. On the 味方する opposite to them a gigantic conical 影をつくる／尾行する 延長するd beyond the 限定するs of the ocean of light. It was the 影をつくる／尾行する of half the globe of Saturn cast by the Sun across his （犯罪の）一味s. Three little dark 位置／汚点／見つけ出すs were also travelling across the surface of the （犯罪の）一味s. They were the 影をつくる／尾行するs of Mimas, Encealadus, and Tethys, the three inner 衛星s. Japetus, the most distant, which 回転するs at a distance ten times greater than that of the Moon from the Earth, was rising to their left above the 辛勝する／優位 of the （犯罪の）一味s, a pale, yellow, little レコード 向こうずねing feebly against the 黒人／ボイコット background of Space. The 残り／休憩（する） of the eight 衛星s were hidden behind the enormous 本体，大部分／ばら積みの of the 惑星, and the infinitely vaster area of the （犯罪の）一味s.

Day after day Zaidie and her husband had been exhausting the 可能性s of the English language in 試みる／企てるing to 述べる to each other the multiplying marvels of the wondrous scene which they were approaching at a 速度(を上げる） of more than a hundred miles a second, and at length Zaidie, after nearly an hour's 絶対の silence, during which they sat with 注目する，もくろむs fastened to their telescopes, looked up and said:

"It's no use, Lenox, all the 罰金 words that we've been trying to think of have just been wasted. The angels may have a language that you could 述べる that in, but we 港／避難所't. If it wouldn't be something like blasphemy I should 減少（する） 負かす／撃墜する to the commonplace, and call Saturn a celestial spinning-最高の，を越す, with 禁止（する）d of light and 影をつくる／尾行する instead of colours all 一連の会議、交渉／完成する it."

"Not at all a bad simile either," laughed Redgrave, as he got up from his 議長，司会を務める with a yawn and a stretch of his 運動競技の 四肢s, "still, it's 同様に that you said celestial, for, after all, that's about the best word we've 設立する yet. Certainly the （犯罪の）一味d world is the most nearly heavenly thing we've seen so far."

"But," he went on, "I think it's about time we were stopping this headlong 落ちる of ours. Do you see how the landscape is spreading out 一連の会議、交渉／完成する us? That means that we're dropping pretty 急速な／放蕩な. どの辺に would you like to land? At 現在の we're 長，率いるing straight for the north 政治家."

"I think I'd rather see what the （犯罪の）一味s are like first," said Zaidie; "couldn't we go across them?"

"Certainly we can," he replied, "only we'll have to be a bit careful."

"Careful, what of—衝突／不一致s? I suppose you're thinking of Proctor's explanation that the （犯罪の）一味s are formed of multitudes of tiny 衛星s?"

"Yes, but I should go a little さらに先に than that, I should say that his （犯罪の）一味s and his eight 衛星s are to Saturn what the 惑星s 一般に and the （犯罪の）一味 of the Asteroids are to the Sun, and if that is the 事例／患者—I mean if we find the （犯罪の）一味s made up of myriads of tiny 団体／死体s 飛行機で行くing 一連の会議、交渉／完成する with Saturn—it might get a bit risky.

"You see the outside （犯罪の）一味 is a bit over 160,000 miles across, and it 回転するs in いっそう少なく than eleven hours. In other words we might find the （犯罪の）一味 a sort of celestial maelstrom, and if we once got into the whirl, and Saturn 発揮するd his 十分な pull on us, we might become a 衛星, too, and go on swinging 一連の会議、交渉／完成する with the 残り／休憩（する） for a good bit of eternity."

"Very 井戸／弁護士席, then," she said, "of course we don't want to do anything of that sort, but there's something else I think we could do," she went on, taking up a copy of Proctor's "Saturn and its System," which she had been reading just after breakfast. "You see those （犯罪の）一味s are, all together, about 10,000 miles 幅の広い; there's a gap of about 1700 miles between the big dark one and the middle 有望な one, and it's nearly 10,000 miles from the 辛勝する／優位 of the 有望な （犯罪の）一味 to the surface of Saturn. Now why shouldn't we get in between the inner （犯罪の）一味 and the 惑星? If Proctor was 権利 and the （犯罪の）一味s are made of tiny 衛星s and there are myriads of them, of course they'll pull up while Saturn pulls 負かす／撃墜する. In fact Flammarion says somewhere, that along Saturn's 赤道 there is no 負わせる at all."

"やめる possible," said Redgrave, "and, if you like, we'll go and 証明する it. Of course, if the Astronef 重さを計るs 絶対 nothing between Saturn and the （犯罪の）一味s, we can easily get away. The only thing that I 反対する to is getting into this 170,000 mile vortex, 存在 whizzed 一連の会議、交渉／完成する with Saturn every ten and a half hours, and sauntering 一連の会議、交渉／完成する the Sun at 21,000 miles an hour."

"Don't," she said, "really it isn't good to think about these things, 据えるd as we are. Fancy, in a 選び出す／独身 year of Saturn there are nearly 25,000 days. Why, we should each of us be about thirty years older when we got 一連の会議、交渉／完成する, even if we lived, which, of course, we shouldn't. By the way, how long could we live for, if the worst （機の）カム to the worst?"

"About two earth-years at the outside," he replied, "but, of course, we shall be home long before that."

"If we don't become one of the 衛星s of Saturn," she replied, "or get dragged away by something into the outer depths of Space."

一方／合間 the downward 速度(を上げる） of the Astronef had been かなり checked. The 広大な circle of the （犯罪の）一味s seemed to suddenly 拡大する, though it now covered the whole 床に打ち倒す of the 丸天井 of Space.

As the Astronef dropped に向かって what might be called the 限界 of the northern tropic of Saturn, the spectacle 現在のd by the （犯罪の）一味s became every minute more and more marvellous—purple and silver, 黒人／ボイコット and gold, dotted with myriads of brilliant points of many-coloured lights, they stretched 上向きs like 広大な rainbows in the Saturnian sky as the Astronef's position changed with regard to the horizon of the 惑星. The nearer they approached the surface, the nearer the gigantic arch of the many coloured （犯罪の）一味s approached the zenith. Sun and 星／主役にするs sank 負かす／撃墜する behind it, for now they were dropping through the fifteen-year-long twilight that 統治するs over that 部分 of the globe of Saturn which during half of his year of thirty terrestrial years is turned away from the Sun.

The その上の they dropped に向かって the （犯罪の）一味s the more 確かな it became that the theory of the 広大な／多数の／重要な English 天文学者 was the 訂正する one. Seen through the telescopes at a distance of only thirty or forty thousand miles, it became perfectly plain that the outer or darker （犯罪の）一味 as seen from the Earth, was composed of myriads of tiny 団体／死体s so far separated from each other that the rayless blackness of Space could be seen through them.

"It's やめる evident," said Redgrave, "that those are （犯罪の）一味s of what we should call meteorites on earth, 原子s of 事柄 which Saturn threw off into Space after the 衛星s were formed ."

"And I shouldn't wonder, if you will excuse my interrupting you," said Zaidie, "if the moons themselves have been made up of a lot of these things going together when they were only gas, or 星雲 or something of that sort. In fact, when Saturn was a good 取引，協定 younger than he is now, he may have had a lot more （犯罪の）一味s and no moons, and now these aerolites, or whatever they are, can't come together and make moons, because they've got too solid."

一方／合間 the Astronef was dropping 速く 負かす／撃墜する に向かって the port on of Saturn's surface which was illuminated by the rays of the Sun, streaming under the lower arch of the inner （犯罪の）一味.

As they passed under it the whole scene suddenly changed. The （犯罪の）一味s 消えるd. 総計費 was an arch of brilliant light a hundred miles 厚い, spanning the whole of the 明白な heavens. Below lay the sunlit surface of Saturn divided into light and dark 禁止（する）d of enormous breadth.

The 禁止（する）d すぐに below them was of a brilliant silver-grey, very much like the central zone of Jupiter. North of this on the one 味方する stretched the long 影をつくる／尾行する of the （犯罪の）一味s, and southward other 禁止（する）d of 補欠／交替の／交替するing white and gold and 深い purple 後継するd each other till they were lost in the curvature of the 広大な 惑星. The 政治家s were of course invisible since the Astronef was now too 近づく to the surface; but on their approach they had seen unmistakable 証拠 of snow and ice.

As soon as they were 正確に／まさに under the （犯罪の）一味-arch, Redgrave shut off the R. 軍隊, and, somewhat to their astonishment, the Astronef began to 回転する slowly on its axis, giving them the idea that the Saturnian System was 回転するing 一連の会議、交渉／完成する them. The arch seemed to 沈む beneath their feet while the belts of the 惑星 rose above them.

"What on earth is the 事柄?" said Zaidie. "Everything has gone upside 負かす／撃墜する."

"Which shows." replied Redgrave, "that as soon as the Astronef became 中立の the （犯罪の）一味s pulled harder than the 惑星, I suppose because we're so 近づく to them, and, instead of 落ちるing on to Saturn, we shall have to 押し進める up at him."

"Oh yes, I see that," said Zaidie, "but after all it does look a little bit bewildering, doesn't it, to be on your feet one minute and on your 長，率いる the next?"

"It is, rather; but you せねばならない be getting accustomed to that sort of thing now. In a few minutes neither you, nor I, nor anything else will have any 負わせる. We shall be just between the attraction of the （犯罪の）一味s and Saturn, so you'd better go and sit 負かす／撃墜する, for if you were to give a bit of an extra spring in walking you might be knocking that pretty 長，率いる of yours against the roof," said Redgrave, as he went to turn the R. 軍隊 on to the 辛勝する／優位 of the （犯罪の）一味s.

A 広大な sea of silver cloud seemed now to descend upon them. Then they entered it, and for nearly half-an-hour the Astronef was 全く enveloped in a sea of pearl-grey luminous もや.

"Atmosphere!" said Redgrave, as he went to the conning-tower and signalled to Murgatroyd to start the プロペラs. They continued to rise and the もや began to drift past them in patches, showing that the プロペラs were 運動ing them ahead.

They now rose 速く に向かって the surface of the 惑星. The cloud wrack got thinner and thinner, and presently they 設立する themselves floating in a （疑いを）晴らす atmosphere between two seas of cloud, the one above them 存在 much いっそう少なく dense than the one below.

"I believe we shall see Saturn on the other 味方する of that," said Zaidie, looking up at it. "Oh dear, there we are going 一連の会議、交渉／完成する again."

"Reaching the point of 中立の attraction," said Redgrave; "once more you'd better sit 負かす／撃墜する in 事例／患者 of 事故s."

Instead of dropping into her deck 議長，司会を務める as she would have done on Earth, she took 持つ／拘留する of the 武器 and pulled herself into it, 説:

"Really it seems rather absurd to have to do this sort of thing. Fancy having to 持つ／拘留する yourself into a 議長，司会を務める. I suppose I hardly 重さを計る anything at all now."

"Not much," said Redgrave, stooping 負かす／撃墜する and taking 持つ／拘留する of the end of the 議長，司会を務める with both 手渡すs. Without any 明らかな 成果／努力 he raised her about five feet from the 床に打ち倒す, and held her there while the Astronef made another 革命. For a moment he let go, and she and the 議長，司会を務める floated between the roof and the 床に打ち倒す of the deck-議会. Then he pulled the 議長，司会を務める away from under her, and as the 床に打ち倒す of the 大型船 once more turned に向かって Saturn, he took 持つ／拘留する of her 手渡すs and brought her to her feet on deck again.

Without any 明らかな 成果／努力 he raised her from the 床に打ち倒す...

"I せねばならない have had a photograph of you like that!" he laughed. "I wonder what they'd think of it at home?"

"If you had taken one I should certainly have broken the 消極的な. The very idea, a photograph of me standing on nothing! Besides, they'd never believe it on Earth."

"We might have got old Andrew to make an affidavit to that 影響," he began.

"Don't talk nonsense, Lenox! Look! There's something much more 利益／興味ing. There's Saturn at last. Now I wonder if we shall find any sort of life there—and shall we be able to breathe the 空気／公表する?"

"I hardly think so," he said, as the Astronef dropped slowly through the thin cloud-隠す. "You know spectrum 分析 has 証明するd that there is a gas in Saturn's atmosphere which we know nothing about, and, whatever it may be for the inhabitants' it's not very likely that it would agree with us, so I think we'd better be content with our own. Besides, the atmosphere is so enormously dense that even if we could breathe it it might squash us up. You see we're only accustomed to fifteen 続けざまに猛撃するs on the square インチ, and it may be hundreds of 続けざまに猛撃するs here."

"井戸／弁護士席," said Zaidie, "I 港／避難所't got any particular 願望（する） to be flattened out like that, or squeezed 乾燥した，日照りの like an orange. It's not at all a nice idea, is it? But, look, Lenox," she went on, pointing downwards, "surely this isn't 空気／公表する at all, or at least it's something between 空気／公表する and water. Aren't these things swimming about in it—something like fish in the sea? They can't be clouds, and they aren't either fish or birds. They don't 飛行機で行く or float. 井戸／弁護士席, this is certainly more wonderful than anything else we've seen, though it doesn't look very pleasant. They're not nice looking, are they? I wonder if they are at all dangerous!"

While she was 説 this Zaidie had gone to her telescope, and was 広範囲にわたる the surface of Saturn, which was now about 100 miles distant. Her husband was doing the same. In fact, for the time 存在 they were all 注目する，もくろむs, for they were looking on a stranger sight than human 存在s had ever seen before.

Underneath the inner cloud-隠す the atmosphere of Saturn appeared to them somewhat as the lower depths of the ocean would appear to a diver, 認めるd that he was able to see for hundreds of miles about him. Its colour was a pale greenish yellow. The outside 温度計s showed that the 気温 was a hundred and seventy-five. In fact the 内部の of the Astronef was getting uncomfortably like a Turkish bath, and Redgrave took the 適切な時期 of at once freshening and 冷静な／正味のing the 空気／公表する by 解放（する）ing a little from the cylinders where it was 蓄える／店d in liquid form.

From what they could see of the surface of Saturn it seemed to be a dead level, greyish-brown in colour, and not divided into oceans and continents. In fact there were no 調印するs whatever of water within 範囲 of their telescopes. There was nothing that looked like cities, or any human habitations, but the ground, as they got nearer to it, seemed to be covered with a very dense vegetable growth, not unlike gigantic forms of 海草, and of somewhat the same colour. In fact, as Zaidie 発言／述べるd, the surface of Saturn was not at all unlike what the 床に打ち倒すs of the ocean of the Earth might be if they were laid 明らかにする.

It was evident that the life of this 部分 of Saturn was not what, for want of a more exact word, might be called terrestrial. Its inhabitants, however they were 構成するd, floated about in the depths of this 半分-gaseous ocean as the denizens of earthly seas did in the terrestrial oceans. Already their telescopes enabled them to make out enormous moving 形態／調整s, 黒人／ボイコット and grey-brown and pale red, swimming about, evidently by their own volition, rising and 落ちるing and often 沈むing 負かす／撃墜する on to the gigantic vegetation which covered the surface, かもしれない for the 目的 of feeding. But it was also evident that they 似ているd the inhabitants of earthly oceans in another 尊敬（する）・点 since it was 平易な to see that they preyed upon each other.

"I don't like the look of those creatures at all," said Zaidie when the Astronef had come to a stop and was floating about five miles above the surface. "They're altogether too uncanny. They look to me something like jelly-fish about the size of 鯨s only they have 注目する，もくろむs and mouths. Did you ever see such awful looking 注目する，もくろむs, bigger than soup-plates and as 有望な as a cat's. I suppose that's because of the 薄暗い light. And the 汚い wormy sort of way they swim, or 飛行機で行く, or whatever it is. Lenox, I don't know what the 残り／休憩（する） of Saturn may be like, but I certainly don't like this part. It's やめる too creepy and unearthly for my taste. Look at the horrors fighting and eating each other. That's the only bit of earthly character they've got about them; the big ones eating the little ones. I hope they won't take the Astronef for something nice to eat."

"They'd find her a pretty 堅い morsel if they did," laughed Redgrave, "but still we may 同様に get some 速度(を上げる） on her in 事例／患者 of 事故."

In obedience to a signal to Murgatroyd, the プロペラs began to 回転する, （警官の）巡回区域，受持ち区域ing the dense 空気／公表する and 運動ing the 星／主役にする 航海士 about twenty miles an hour through the depths of this strangely-peopled ocean.

They approached nearer and nearer to the surface, and as they did so the strange creatures about them grew more and more 非常に／多数の. They were certainly the most 驚くべき／特命の／臨時の living things that human 注目する，もくろむs had looked upon. Zaidie's comparison to the 鯨 and the jelly fish was by no means incorrect; only when they got 近づく enough to them they 設立する, to their astonishment, that they were 二塁打-長，率いるd—that is to say, they had a 長，率いる furnished with mouth, nostrils, ear-穴を開けるs, and 注目する，もくろむs at each end of their 団体／死体s.

The larger of the creatures appeared to have a 確かな 量 of 尊敬（する）・点 for each other. Now and then they 証言，証人／目撃するd a 戦う／戦い-王室の between two of the monsters who were 追求するing the same prey. Their method of attack was as follows: the 加害者 would rise above his 対抗者 or prey, and then, dropping on to its 支援する, envelope it and begin 涙／ほころびing at its 味方するs and under parts with 抱擁する beak-like jaws, somewhat 似ているing those of the largest 肉親，親類d of the earthly octopus, only very much larger. The 実体 composing their 団体／死体s appeared to be not unlike that of a terrestrial jelly-fish, but much denser, and having the tenacity of soft India rubber save at the 二塁打 ends, where it was much harder, in fact a good 取引，協定 more like horn.

They 証言，証人／目撃するd a 戦う／戦い-王室の between two of the monsters.

When one of them had overpowered an enemy or a 犠牲者 the two sank 負かす／撃墜する into the vegetation, and the 勝利者 began to eat the vanquished. Their means of locomotion consisted of 抱擁する fins, or rather half fins, half wings, of which they had three laterally arranged behind each 長，率いる, and four much longer and narrower, above and below, which seemed to be used おもに for steering 目的s.

They moved with equal 緩和する in either direction, and they appeared to rise or 落ちる by inflating or deflating the middle 部分s of their 団体／死体s, somewhat as fish do with their swimming bladders.

The light in the lower 地域s of this strange ocean was dimmer than earthly twilight, although the Astronef was 刻々と making her way beneath the arch of the （犯罪の）一味s に向かって the sunlit 半球.

"I wonder what the 影響 of the サーチライト would be on these fellows!" said Redgrave. "Those 抱擁する 注目する，もくろむs of theirs are evidently only ふさわしい to 薄暗い light. Let's try and dazzle some of them."

"I hope it won't be a 事例／患者 of the moths and the candle!" said Zaidie. "They don't seem to have taken much 利益／興味 in us so far. Perhaps they 港／避難所't been able to see 適切に, but suppose they were attracted by the light and began （人が）群がるing 一連の会議、交渉／完成する us and fastening on to us, as the horrible things do with each other. What should we do then? They might drag us 負かす／撃墜する and perhaps keep us there; but there's one thing, they'd never eat us, because we could keep の近くにd up and die respectably together."

"Not much 恐れる of that, little woman," he said, "we're too strong for them. 常習的な steel and toughened glass せねばならない be more than a match for a lot of 誇張するd jelly-fish like these," said Redgrave, as he switched on the 長，率いる search-light. "We've come here to see strange things and we may 同様に see them. Ah, would you my friend. No, this is not one of your sort, and it isn't meant to eat."

A 抱擁する, 二塁打-長，率いるd monster, 明らかに some four hundred feet long, （機の）カム floating に向かって them as the search-light flashed out, and others began 即時に to （人が）群がる about them, just as Zaidie had 恐れるd.

"Lenox, for Heaven's sake be careful!" cried Zaidie, 縮むing up beside him as the 抱擁する, hideous 長，率いる, with its saucer 注目する，もくろむs and enormous beak-like jaws wide open, （機の）カム に向かって them. "And look, there are more coming. Can't we go up and get away from them?"

"Wait a minute, little woman," replied Redgrave, who was beginning to feel the passion of adventure thrilling in his 神経s "If we fought the Martian 空気／公表する (n)艦隊／(a)素早い and licked it I think we can manage these things. Let's see how he likes the light."

As he spoke he flashed the 十分な glare of the five thousand candle-力／強力にする lamp 十分な on to the creature's 広大な／多数の／重要な cat-like 注目する，もくろむs. 即時に it bent itself up into an arc. The two 長，率いるs, each the exact image of the other, （機の）カム together. The four 注目する，もくろむs glared half dazzled into the conning-tower and the four 抱擁する jaws snapped viciously together.

"Lenox, Lenox, for goodness sake let us go up!" cried Zaidie 縮むing still closer to him. "That thing's too horrible to look at."

"It is a beast, isn't it?" he said, "but I think we can 削減（する） him in two without much trouble."

He 圧力（をかける）d one of the buttons on the signal board three times quickly and once slowly. It was the signal for 十分な 速度(を上げる） on the プロペラs, that is to say about a hundred earth-miles an hour. The Astronef せねばならない have sprung 今後 and driven her 押し通す through the 抱擁する, brick-red 団体／死体 of the hideous creature which was now only a couple of hundred yards from them; but instead of that a slow, jarring, grinding thrill seemed to run through her, and she stopped. The next moment Murgatroyd put his 長，率いる up through the companion-way which led from the upper deck to the conning-tower, and said in a トン whose 静める 示すd, as usual, 辞職 to the worst that could happen:

"My lord, two of those beasts, fishes or live balloons, or whatever they are, have come across the プロペラs. They're 削減（する） up a good bit, but I've had to stop the engines, and they're 粘着するing all 一連の会議、交渉／完成する the after part. We're going 負かす／撃墜する, too. Shall I disconnect the プロペラs and turn on the repulsion?"

"Yes, certainly, Andrew!" cried Zaidie, "and all of it, too. Look, Lenox, that horrible thing is coming. Suppose it broke the glass, and we couldn't breathe this atmosphere!"

As she spoke the enormous, 二塁打-長，率いるd 団体／死体 前進するd until it 完全に enveloped the 今後 part of the Astronef. The two hideous 長，率いるs （機の）カム の近くに to the 味方するs of the conning-tower; the 抱擁する, palely luminous 注目する，もくろむs looked in upon them. Zaidie, in her terror, even thought that she saw something like human curiosity in them.

Then, as Murgatroyd disappeared to obey the orders which Redgrave had 許可／制裁d with a quick nod, the 長，率いるs approached still closer, and she heard the ends of the pointed jaws, which she now saw were 武装した with shark-like teeth, striking against the 厚い glass 塀で囲むs of the conning-tower.

"Don't be 脅すd, dear!" he said, putting his arm 一連の会議、交渉／完成する her, just as he had done when they thought they were 落ちるing into the fiery seas of Jupiter. "You'll see something happen to this gentleman soon. Big and all as he is there won't be much left of him in a few minutes. They are like those monsters they 設立する in the lowest depths of our own seas. They can only live under tremendous 圧力. That's why we didn't find any of them up above. This chap'll burst like a 泡 presently. 一方／合間, there's no use in stopping here. Suppose you go below and brew some coffee and bring it up on deck with a 減少（する） of brandy in it, while I go and see how things are looking aft. It doesn't do you any good, you know, to be looking at monsters of this sort. You can see what's left of them later on."

Zaidie was not at all sorry to obey him, for the horrible sight had almost sickened her.

They were still under the arch of the （犯罪の）一味s, and so, when the 十分な strength of the R. 軍隊 was directed against the 団体／死体 of Saturn, the 大型船 sprang 上向きs like a 発射物 解雇する／砲火／射撃d from a 大砲.

Redgrave went 支援する into the conning-tower to see what happened to their 加害者. It was already trying vainly to detach itself and 沈む 支援する into a more congenial element. As the 圧力 of the atmosphere 減少（する）d its 抱擁する 団体／死体 swelled up into still huger 割合s. The 肌 on the two 長，率いるs puffed up as though 空気／公表する was 存在 pumped in under it. The 広大な／多数の／重要な 注目する，もくろむs protruded out of their sockets; the jaws opened 広範囲にわたって as though the creature were gasping for breath.

一方／合間 Murgatroyd was seeing something very 類似の at the after end, and wondering what was going to happen to his プロペラs, the blades of which were 深く，強烈に imbedded in the jelly-like flesh of the monsters.

The Astronef leaped higher and higher, and the hideous 団体／死体s which were 粘着するing to her swelled out huger and huger, and Redgrave even fancied that he heard something like the cries of 苦痛 from both 長，率いるs on either 味方する of the conning-tower. They passed through the inner cloud-隠す, and then the Astronef began to turn on her axis, and, just as the outer envelope （機の）カム into 見解（をとる） the enormously distended 本体，大部分／ばら積みの of the monsters 崩壊（する）d, and their fragments, seeming now more like the tatters of a burst balloon, dropped from the 団体／死体 of the Astronef and floated away 負かす／撃墜する into what had once been their native element.

"Difference of 環境 means a lot, after all," said Redgrave to himself. "I should have called that either a 嘘（をつく） or a 奇蹟 if I hadn't seen it, and I'm jolly glad I sent Zaidie 負かす／撃墜する below."

"Here's your coffee, Lenox," said Zaidie's 発言する／表明する from the upper deck, "only it doesn't seem to want to stop in the cups, and the cups keep getting off the saucers. I suppose we're turning upside 負かす／撃墜する again."

Redgrave stepped somewhat gingerly on to the deck, for his 団体／死体 had so little 負わせる under the 二塁打 attraction of Saturn and the （犯罪の）一味s that a very slight 成果／努力 would have sent him 飛行機で行くing up to the roof of the deck-議会.

"That's 正確に／まさに as you please," he said, "just 持つ／拘留する that （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する 安定した a minute. We shall have our centre of gravity 支援する soon. And now, as to the main question, suppose we take a trip across the sunlit 半球 of Saturn to, what I suppose we should call, on Earth, the South 政治家. We can get 抵抗 from the （犯罪の）一味s, and as we are here we may 同様に see what the 残り／休憩（する） of Saturn is like. You see, if our theory is 訂正する as to the （犯罪の）一味s 集会 up most of the atmosphere of Saturn about its 赤道, we shall get to higher 高度s where the 空気／公表する is thinner and more like our own, and therefore it is やめる possible that we shall find different forms of life in it too—or if you've had enough of Saturn and would prefer a trip to Uranus?"

"No, thanks," said Zaidie quickly. "To tell you the truth, Lenox, I've had almost enough 星／主役にする-wandering for one honeymoon, and though we've seen nice things 同様に as horrible things—特に those 恐ろしい, slimy creatures 負かす／撃墜する there—I'm beginning to feel a bit homesick for good old mother Earth. You see, we're nearly a thousand million miles from home, and, even with you, it makes one feel a bit lonely. I 投票（する） we 調査する the 残り／休憩（する） of this 半球 up to the 政治家, and then, as they say at sea— I mean our sea—'一区切り／（ボクシングなどの）試合 ship, and see if we can find our own old world again. After all, it's more homelike than any of these, isn't it?"

"Just take your telescope and look at it," said Redgrave, pointing に向かって the Sun, with its little cluster of attendant 惑星s. "It looks something like one of Jupiter's little moons 負かす／撃墜する there, doesn't it, only not やめる as big?"

"Yes, it does, but that doesn't 事柄. The fact is that it's there, and we know what it's like, and it's home, if it is a thousand million miles away, and that's everything."

By this time they had passed through the outer 禁止（する）d of clouds. The 抱擁する, sunlit arch of the （犯罪の）一味s towered up to the zenith, and 明らかに overarched the whole heavens. Below and in 前線 of them lay the enormous 半分-circle of the 半球 which was turned に向かって the Sun, shrouded by its many colored 禁止（する）d of clouds. The Repulsive 軍隊 was directed 堅固に against the lower （犯罪の）一味, and the Asfronef dropped 速く in a slanting direction through the cloud-禁止（する）d に向かって the southern temperate zone of the 惑星.

They passed through the second, or dark, cloud-禁止（する）d at the 率 of about three thousand miles an hour, 補佐官d by the Repulsion against the （犯罪の）一味s and, the attraction of the 惑星, and soon after lunch, the 構成要素s of which now 同意d to remain on the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する, they passed through the clouds and 設立する themselves in a new world of wonders.

On a far vaster 規模, it was the Earth during that period of its 開発 which is called the Reptilian Age. The atmosphere was still dense and 負担d with aqueous vapour, but the waters had already been divided from the land.

They passed over 広大な, marshy continents and islands, and warm seas, above which thin clouds of steam still hung. They passed through these, and, as they swept southward with the プロペラs working at their 最大の 速度(を上げる）, they caught glimpses of 巨大（な） forms rising out of the steamy waters 近づく the land; of others はうing slowly over it, dragging their 抱擁する 本体，大部分／ばら積みの through a tremendous vegetation, which they 鎮圧するd 負かす／撃墜する as they passed, as a sheep on earth might 押し進める its way through a field of standing corn.

Yet other 形態／調整s, 抱擁する winged and ungainly, ぱたぱたするd with a slow, bat-like 動議, through the lower strata of the atmosphere.

Every now and then during the voyage across the temperate zone the プロペラs were slowed 負かす／撃墜する to enable them to 証言，証人／目撃する some Titanic 衝突 between the gigantic denizens of land and sea and 空気／公表する. But her ladyship had had enough of horrors on the Saturnian 赤道, and so she was やめる content to watch this 段階 of 進化 (as it had happened on the Earth many thousands of ages ago) from a convenient distance, and so the Astronef sped on southward without approaching the surface nearer than a couple of miles.

"It'll be all very nice to see and remember and dream about afterwards," she said, "but really I don't think I can stand any more monsters just now, at least not at の近くに ４半期/4分の1s, and I'm やめる sure if those things can live there we couldn't, any more than we could have lived on Earth a million years or so ago. No, really I don't want to land, Lenox, let's go on."

They went on at a 速度(を上げる） of about a hundred miles an hour, and, as they 進歩d southward, both the atmosphere and the landscape 速く changed. The 空気／公表する grew clearer and the clouds はしけ. Lands and seas were more はっきりと divided, and both teeming with life. The seas still 群れているd with serpentine monsters of the saurian type, and the firmer lands were peopled by 抱擁する animals, mastodons, 耐えるs, 巨大（な） tapirs, nyledons, deinotheriums, and a 得点する／非難する／２０ of other 種類 too strange for them to recognise by any earthly likeness, which roamed in 広大な／多数の／重要な herds through the 広大な twilit forests and over boundless plains covered with grey-blue vegetation.

The firmer lands were peopled by 抱擁する animals...

Here, too, they 設立する mountains for the first time on Saturn; mountains 法外な-味方するd, and many earth-miles high.

As the Astronef was skirting the 味方する of one of these 範囲s Redgrave 許すd it to approach more closely than he had so far done to the surface of Saturn.

"I shouldn't wonder if we 設立する some of the higher forms of life up here," he said. "If there is anything here that's going to develop some clay into the human race of Saturn, it would 自然に get up here."

"Of course it would," said Zaidie, "as far as possible out of the reach of those unutterable horrors on the 赤道. I should think that would be one of the first 調印するs they would show of superior 知能. Look, I believe there are some of them. Do you see those 穴を開けるs in the mountain 味方する there? And there they are, something like gorillas, only twice as big, and up the trees, too—and what trees! They must be seven or eight hundred feet high."

"Tree and 洞穴-dwellers, and ancestors of the 未来 王室の race of Saturn, I suppose!" said Redgrave. "They don't look very nice, do they? Still, there's no 疑問 about their 存在 far superior in 知能 to what we left behind us. Evidently this atmosphere is too thin for the two-長，率いるd jelly-fishes, and the saurians to breathe. These creatures have 設立する that out in a few hundreds of 世代s, and so they have come to live up here out of the way. Vegetarians, I suppose, or perhaps they live on smaller monkeys and other animals, just as our ancestors did."

"Really, Lenox," said Zaidie, turning 一連の会議、交渉／完成する and 直面するing him, "I must say that you have a most unpleasant way of alluding to one's ancestors. They couldn't help what they were."

"井戸／弁護士席, dear," he said, going に向かって her, "marvellous as the 奇蹟 seems, I'm 異端者 enough to believe it possible that your ancestors even, millions of years ago, perhaps, may have been something like those; but then, of course, you know I'm a hopeless Darwinian."

"And, therefore, 完全に horrid, as I've often said before when you get on 支配するs like these. Not, of course, that I'm ashamed of my poor relations; and then, after all, your Darwin was やめる wrong when he talked about the 降下／家系 of man—and woman. We—特に the women —have 上がるd from that sort of thing, if there's any truth in the story at all; though, 本人自身で, I must say I prefer dear old Mother Eve."

"Who never had a sweeter daughter!" he replied, 製図／抽選 her に向かって him.

"And, 一方／合間, compliments 存在 閉めだした, I'll go and get dinner ready," she said. "After all, it doesn't 事柄 what world one's in, one get's hungry all the same."

The dinner, which was eaten somewhere in the middle of the fifteen-year-long day of Saturn, was a very pleasant one, because they were now 近づくing the turning-point of their trip into the depths of Space, and thoughts of home and friends were already beginning to 飛行機で行く 支援する across the thousand-million-mile 湾 which lay between them and the Earth which they had left only a little more than two months ago.

While they were at dinner the Astronef rose above the mountains and 再開するd her southward course. Zaidie brought the coffee up on deck as usual after dinner, and, while Redgrave smoked his cigar and Zaidie her cigarette, they luxuriated in the magnificent spectacle of the sunlit 味方する of （犯罪の）一味s 非常に高い up, rainbow built on rainbow, to the zenith of their 明白な heavens.

"What a pity there aren't any words to 述べる it!" said Zaidie. "I wonder if the 子孫s of the ancestors of the 未来 human race on Saturn will invent anything like a suitable language. I wonder how they'll talk about those （犯罪の）一味s millions of years hence."

"By that time there may not be any （犯罪の）一味s," Lenox replied, blowing a （犯罪の）一味 of smoke from his own lips. "Look at that—made in a moment and gone in a moment—and yet on 正確に／まさに the same 原則, it gives one a 薄暗い idea of the difference between time and eternity. After all it's only another example of Kelvin's theory of vortices. 星雲, and asteroids, and 惑星-（犯罪の）一味s, and smoke-（犯罪の）一味s are really all made on the same 原則."

"My dear Lenox, if you're going to get as philosophical and as commonplace as that I'm going to bed. Now that I come to think of it, I've been about fifteen earth-hours out of bed, so it's about time I went. It's your turn to make the coffee in the morning—our morning I mean—and you'll wake me in time to see the South 政治家 of Saturn, won't you? You're not coming yet, I suppose?"

"Not just yet, dear. I want to see a bit more of this, and then I must go through the engines and see that they're all 権利 for that thousand million mile homeward voyage you're talking about. You can have a good ten hours' sleep without 行方不明の much, I think, for there doesn't seem to be anything more 利益／興味ing than our own 北極の life 負かす／撃墜する there. So good-night, little woman, and don't have too many nightmares."

"Good-night!" she said, "if you hear me shout you'll know that you've to come and 保護する me from monsters. Weren't those two-長，率いるd brutes just too horrid for words? Good-night, dear!"
