AFTER leaving Saturn the Astronef 追求するd her lonely course on her homeward voyage across the fields of space, while the （犯罪の）一味d World, which had so nearly 証明するd the end of Lord and Lady Redgrave's wanderings, grew dimmer every hour behind them.
On the morning of the fourth day from Saturn Lord Redgrave went as usual into the conning-tower to 診察する the 器具s and to see that everything was in order. To his 激しい surprise he 設立する, on looking at the gravitational compass, which was to the Astronef what the ordinary compass is to a ship at sea, that the 大型船 was a long way out of her course.
Such a thing had never yet occurred. Up to now the Astronef had obeyed the 法律s of gravitation and repulsion with 絶対の exactness. He made another examination of the 器具s; but no, all were in perfect order.
"I wonder what the ジュース is the 事柄," he said, after he had looked for a few moments with frowning 注目する，もくろむs at the Heavens before him. "By Jove, we're swinging more. This is getting serious."
He went 支援する to the compass. The long, slender needle was slowly swinging さらに先に and さらに先に out of the middle line of the 大型船.
"There can only be two explanations of that," he went on, thrusting his 手渡すs 深い into his trouser pockets; "either the engines are not working 適切に, or some enormous and invisible 団体／死体 is pulling us に向かって it out of our course. Let's have a look at the engines first."
When he reached the engine-room he said to Murgatroyd, who was indulging in his usual pastime of きれいにする and polishing his beloved 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金s:
"Have you noticed anything wrong during the last hour or so, Murgatroyd?"
"No, my lord, at least not so far as 関心s the engines. They're all 権利. Redgrave went 支援する to the conning-tower without replying. The only possible 解答 of the mystery of the deviation had suddenly 夜明けd upon him, and a very serious 解答 it was. He remembered that there were such things as dead suns—the derelicts of the Ocean of Space—広大な, invisible orbs, lightless and lifeless, too distant from any living sun to be illumined by its rays, and yet 演習ing the only 軍隊 left to them, the 軍隊 of attraction. Might not one of these have wandered 近づく enough to the 限定するs of the Solar system to 発揮する this 軍隊, a 軍隊 of 絶対 unknown magnitude, upon the Astronef?

He went to a little desk beside the 器具-（米）棚上げする／（英）提議する and 急落（する），激減（する）d into a maze of mathematics, of 集まりs and 負わせるs, angles and distances. Half-an-hour later he stood looking at the last symbol on the last sheet of paper with something like 恐れる. It was the 致命的な x which remained to 満足させる the last equation, the unknown 量 which 代表するd the unseen 軍隊 that was dragging the Astronef into the outer wilderness of interstellar space, into far-off 地域s from which, with the remaining 軍隊 at his 処分, no return would be possible.
He signalled to Murgatroyd to 増加する the 開発 of the R. 軍隊 from a tenth to a half. Then he went to the lower saloon, where Zaidie was busy with her usual morning "tidy-up." Now that the mystery was explained there was no 推論する／理由 to keep her in the dark. Indeed, he had given her his word that he would 隠す from her no danger, however 広大な／多数の／重要な, that might 脅す them when he had once 保証するd himself of its 存在.
She listened to him in silence and without a 調印する of 恐れる beyond a little 解除するing of the eyelids and a little fading of the colour in her cheeks.
"And if we can't resist this 軍隊," she said, when he had finished, "it will drag us millions—perhaps millions of millions—of miles away from our own system into outer space, and we shall either 落ちる on the surface of this dead sun and be 減ずるd to a puff of lighted gas in an instant, or some other 団体／死体 will pull us away from it, and then another away from that, and so on, and we shall wander の中で the 星／主役にするs for ever and ever until the end of time!"
"If the first happens, darling, we shall die—together— without knowing it. It's the second that I'm most afraid of. The Astronef may go on wandering の中で the 星／主役にするs for ever—but we have only water enough for three weeks more. Now come into the conning—tower and we'll sec how things are going."
As they bent their 長，率いるs over the 器具-（米）棚上げする／（英）提議する Redgrave saw that the remorseless needle had moved two degrees more to the 権利. The keel of the Astronef, under the impulse of the R. 軍隊, was continually turning. The pull of the invisible orb was dragging the 大型船 slowly but irresistibly out of her line.
"There's nothing for it but this," said Redgrave, putting out his 手渡す to the signal-board, and signalling to Murgatroyd to put the engines to their highest 力／強力にする. "You see, dear, our greatest danger is this; we have had to 発揮する such a tremendous lot of 力／強力にする that we 港／避難所't any too much to spare, and if we have to spend it in 中和する／阻止するing the pull of this dead sun, or whatever it is, we may not have enough of what I call the R. Fluid left to get home with."
"I see," she said, 星／主役にするing with wide-open 注目する，もくろむs at the needle. "You mean that we may not have enough to keep us from 落ちるing into one of the 惑星s or perhaps into the sun itself. 井戸／弁護士席, supposing the dangers are equal, this one is the nearest, and so I guess we've got to fight it first."
"Spoken like a good American!" he said, putting his arm across her shoulders and looking at once with infinite pride and infinite 悔いる at the 静める, proud 直面する which the glory of 辞職 had adorned with a new beauty.
She 屈服するd her 長，率いる and then looked away again so that he should not see that there were 涙／ほころびs in her 注目する，もくろむs. He took his 手渡す from her shoulder and 星／主役にするd in silence 負かす／撃墜する at the needle. It was 静止している again.
"We've stopped!" he said, after a pause of several moments. "Now, if the 団体／死体 that's taken us out of our course is moving away from us we 勝利，勝つ, if it's coming に向かって us we lose. At any 率, we've done all we can. Come along, Zaidie, let's go and have a walk on deck."
They had scarcely reached the upper deck when something happened which dwarfed all the other experiences of their marvellous voyage into utter insignificance. Above and around them the 星座s 炎d with a splendour 信じられない to an 観察者／傍聴者 on earth, but ahead of them gaped the 広大な, 黒人／ボイコット 無効の which sailors call "the coal-穴を開ける," and in which the most powerful telescopes have only discovered a few faintly luminous 団体／死体s. Suddenly, out of the 中央 of this infinity of 不明瞭, there 炎d a glare of almost intolerably brilliant radiance. 即時に the 今後 end of the Astronef was bathed in light and heat—the light and heat of a re-created sun, whose elements had been dark and 冷淡な for uncounted ages.
Hundreds of tiny points of light, unknown worlds which had been dark for myriads of years, twinkled out of the blackness. Then the 猛烈な／残忍な glare grew dimmer. A 広大な mantle of luminous もや spread out with 信じられない rapidity, and in the 中央 of this 炎d the central 核—the sun which in far-off ages to come would be the giver of light and heat, of life and beauty to worlds unborn, to 惑星s which were now only little eddies of 原子s whirling in that ocean of nebulous 炎上.
For more than an hour the two voyagers stood motionless and silent, gazing on the indescribable splendours of a spectacle such as no human 注目する，もくろむs but theirs had ever beheld. Every earthly thought seemed burnt out of their souls by the glory and the wonder of it. It was almost as though they were standing in the very presence of God, for were they not 証言，証人／目撃するing the 最高の 行為／法令／行動する of omnipotence, a new 創造? Their 危険，危なくする, a 危険，危なくする such as had never 脅すd mortals before, was utterly forgotten. They had even forgotten each other's presence. For the time 存在 they 存在するd only to look and to wonder.
They were called at length out of their trance by the 事柄-of-fact 発言する／表明する of Murgatroyd 説: "My lord, she's 支援する to her course. Will I keep the 力／強力にする on 十分な?"
"Eh! What's that?" exclaimed Redgrave, as they both turned quickly 一連の会議、交渉／完成する. "Oh, it's you, Murgatroyd. The 力／強力にする? Yes, keep it on 十分な till I have taken the bearings."
"Ay, my lord, very good." replied the engineer. As he left the deck Redgrave put his arm 一連の会議、交渉／完成する Zaidie and drew her gently に向かって him and said: "Zaidie, truly you are favoured の中で women! You have seen the beginning of a new 創造. You will certainly be saved somehow after that."
"Yes, and you too, dear," she murmured, as though still half-dreaming. "It is very glorious and wonderful; but what is it all—I mean, what is the explanation of it?"
"The 単に 科学の explanation, dear, is very simple. I see it all now. The 軍隊 that was dragging us out of our course was the 部隊d pull of two dead 星／主役にするs approaching each other in the same 軌道. They may have been doing that for millions of years. The shock of their 会合 has transformed their 動議 into light and heat. They have 部隊d to form a 選び出す／独身 sun and a 星雲, which will some day condense into a system of 惑星s like ours. To-night the 天文学者s on earth will discover a new 星／主役にする—a variable 星／主役にする as they'll call it—for it will grow dimmer as it moves away from our system. It has often happened before."
Then they turned 支援する to the conning-tower. The needle had swung to its old position. The new 星／主役にする, henceforth to be known in the annals of astronomy as Lilla-Zaidie, had already 始める，決める for them to the 権利 of the Astronef and risen on the left, and, at a distance of over nineteen hundred million miles from the earth, the corner was turned, and the homeward voyage began.
A few days later they crossed the path of Jupiter, but the 巨大（な） was invisible, far away on the other 味方する of the sun. Redgrave laid his course so as to avail himself to the 最大の of the "pull" of the 惑星s without going 近づく enough to them to be compelled to 発揮する too much of the priceless R. 軍隊, which the 指示する人（物）s showed to be running perilously low.
Between the 軌道s of Jupiter and 火星 they made a decided economy by 上陸 on Ceres, one of the largest of the asteroids, and travelling about fifty million miles on her に向かって the 軌道 of the earth without any 支出 of 軍隊 whatever. They 設立する the tiny world 所有するd of a breathable atmosphere and a fluid 似ているing water but nearly as dense as 水銀柱，温度計. A couple of flasks of it form the greatest treasures of the British Museum and the 国家の Museum at Washington. The vegetable world was 代表するd by coarse grass, lichens, and dwarf shrubs, and the animal by different 種類 of worms, lizards and 飛行機で行くs, and small burrowing animals of the rodent type.
As the 軌道 of Ceres, like that of the other asteroids, is かなり inclined to that of the earth, the Astronef rose from its surface when the 計画（する） of the earth's 革命 was reached, and the glittering 群れている of miniature 惑星s 急落（する），激減（する）d away into space beneath them.
"Where to now?" said Zaidie, as her husband （機の）カム 負かす／撃墜する on deck from the conning-tower.
"I am going to try to steer a middle course between the 軌道s of 水銀柱，温度計 and Venus," he replied. "They just happen to be so placed now that we せねばならない be able to get the advantage of the pull of both of them as we pass, and that will save us a lot of 力／強力にする. The only thing I'm afraid of is the pull of the sun, equal to goodness knows how many times the attraction of all the 惑星s put together. You see, little woman, it's like this," he went on, taking out a pencil and going 負かす／撃墜する on one 膝 on the deck: "Here's the Astronef; there's Venus; there's 水銀柱，温度計; there's the sun; and there, away on the other 味方する of him, is Mother Earth: If we can turn that corner 安全に and without expending too much 力／強力にする we should be all 権利."
"And if we can't, what will happen?"
"It will be a choice between morphine and 火葬 in the atmosphere of the sun, dear, or rather 徐々に roasting as we 落ちる に向かって it."
"Then, of course, it will be morphine," she said やめる 静かに, as she turned away from his diagram and looked at the now 急速な／放蕩な 増加するing レコード of the sun. A 井戸／弁護士席-balanced mind speedily becomes accustomed even to the most terrible 危険，危なくするs, and Zaidie had now looked this one so long and so 刻々と in the 直面する that for her it had already become 単に the choice between two forms of death with just a chance of escape hidden in the の近くにd 手渡す of 運命／宿命.
Thirty-six earth-hours later the glorious golden レコード of Venus lay 幅の広い and 有望な beneath them. Above was the 炎ing orb of the Sun, nearly half as big again as it appears from the earth, with 水銀柱，温度計, a 一連の会議、交渉／完成する 黒人／ボイコット 位置／汚点／見つけ出す, travelling slowly across it.
"My dear Bird-Folk!" said Zaidie, looking 負かす／撃墜する at the lovely world below them. "If home wasn't home-"
"We can be 支援する の中で them in a few hours with 絶対の safety," interrupted her husband, catching at the suggestion. "I've told you the truth about getting 支援する to the earth. It's only a chance at best, and even if we pass the sun we may not have 軍隊 enough left to 妨げる the Astronef from 存在 粉砕するd to dust or burnt up in the atmosphere. After all we might do worse-"
"What would you do if you were alone, Rollo?" she said, interrupting him in turn.
"I should take my chance and go on. After all home's home and 価値（がある） a struggle. But you, dear-"
"I'm you, and so I take the same chances as you do. Besides, we're not perfect enough for a world where there isn't any sin. We should probably get やめる 哀れな there. No, home's home, as you say."
"Then home it is, dear!" he replied.
The 広大な, resplendent 半球 of the Love-星／主役にする sunk 負かす／撃墜する into the 丸天井 of space, growing 速く smaller and dimmer as the Astronef sped に向かって the little 黒人／ボイコット 位置／汚点／見つけ出す on the 直面する of the sun, which to them was like a ブイ，浮標 場内取引員／株価 a place of utter and hopeless shipwreck in the ocean of immensity.
The chronometer, still 始める，決める to earth time, had now begun to 示す the last hours of the Astronef's voyage. She was not only travelling at a 速度(を上げる） of which 人物／姿／数字s could give no comprehensible idea, but the Sun, 水銀柱，温度計, and the Earth were 急ぐing に向かって her with a 構内／化合物 velocity, composed of the movement of the Solar System through space and of the movement of the two 惑星s 一連の会議、交渉／完成する the sun.
Murgatroyd was at his 地位，任命する in the engine-room. Redgrave and Zaidie had gone into the conning-tower, perhaps for the last time. For good fortune or evil, for life or death, they would see the end of the voyage together.
"How far yet, dear?" she said, as Venus began to slip away behind them, rising like a splendid moon in their wake.
"Only sixty million miles or so, a 事柄 of a few hours, more or いっそう少なく —it all depends," he replied, without taking his 注目する，もくろむs off the compass.
"Sixty millions! Why I feel almost at home again."
"But we have to turn the corner of the street yet, dear, and after that there's a 落ちる of more than twenty-five million miles on to the more or いっそう少なく kindly breast of Mother Earth."
"A 落ちる! It does sound rather awful when you put it that way; but I am not going to let you 脅す me. I believe Mother Earth will receive her wandering children やめる as kindly as they deserve."
The moon-like レコード of Venus grew 速く smaller, and the 黒人／ボイコット 位置／汚点／見つけ出す on the 直面する of the sun larger and larger as the Astronef 急ぐd silently and imperceptibly, and yet with almost 信じられない velocity, に向かって doom or fortune. Neither Zaidie nor Redgrave spoke again for nearly three hours —hours which to them seemed to pass like so many minutes. Their 注目する，もくろむs were 直す／買収する，八百長をするd on the 黒人／ボイコット レコード of 水銀柱，温度計, which, as they approached it, 拡大するd with magical rapidity till it 完全に （太陽，月の）食／失墜d the 炎ing orb behind it. Their thoughts were far away on the still invisible earth and all the splendid 可能性s that it held for two young lives like theirs.
As the sunlight 消えるd they looked at each other in the golden moonlight of Venus, and Zaiclie let her 長，率いる 残り／休憩（する） for a moment on her husband's shoulder. Then a 速く broadening gleam of light 発射 out from behind the 黒人／ボイコット circle of 水銀柱，温度計. The first 危機 had come. Redgrave put out his 手渡す to the signal-board and rang for 十分な 力／強力にする. The 惑星 seemed to swing 一連の会議、交渉／完成する as the Astronef 急ぐd into the 炎. In a few minutes it passed through the 段階s from "new" to "十分な." Venus became （太陽，月の）食／失墜d in turn as they swung between 水銀柱，温度計 and the Sun, and then Redgrave, after a 早い ちらりと見ること to either 味方する, said:
"If we can only keep the two pulls balanced we shall do it. That will keep us in a straight line, and our own 勢い ought to carry us into the earth's attraction."
Zaidie did not reply. She was shading her 注目する，もくろむs with her 手渡す from the almost intolerable brilliance of the sun's rays, and looking straight ahead to catch the first glimpse of the silver-grey orb. Her husband read her thoughts and 尊敬（する）・点d them. But a few minutes later he startled her out of her dream of home by exclaiming:
"Good God, we're turning!"
"What do you say, dear? Turning what?"
"On our own centre. Look! I'm afraid only a 奇蹟 can save us now, darling."
She looked to the left-手渡す 味方する where he was pointing. The sun, no longer now a sun, but a 広大な ocean of 炎上 filling, nearly a third of the 丸天井 of space, was 沈むing beneath them, on the 権利 水銀柱，温度計 was rising. Zaidie knew only too 井戸／弁護士席 what this meant. It meant that the keel of the Astronef was 存在 dragged out of the straight line which would 削減（する） the earth's 軌道 some forty million miles away. It meant that, in spite of the exertion of the 十分な 力／強力にする that the engines could develop, they had begun to 落ちる into the sun.
Redgrave laid his 手渡す on his wife's, and their 注目する，もくろむs met. There was no need for words. Perhaps speech just then would have been impossible. In that mute ちらりと見ること each looked into the other's soul and was content. Then he left the conning-tower, and Zaidie dropped on to her 膝s before the 器具-（米）棚上げする／（英）提議する and laid her forehead upon her clasped 手渡すs.
Her husband went to the saloon, 打ち明けるd a little cupboard in the 塀で囲む and took out a blue 瓶／封じ込める of corrugated glass labeled "Morphine, 毒（薬）." He took another empty 瓶／封じ込める of white glass and 手段d fifty 減少（する）s into it. Then he went to the engine-room and said 突然の:
"Murgatroyd, I'm afraid it's all up with us. We're 落ちるing into the sun, and you know what that means. In a few hours the Astronef will be red-hot. So it's roasting alive—or this. I recommend this."
"And what might that be, my lord?" said the old engineer, looking at the 瓶／封じ込める which his master held vut に向かって him. "That's morphine—毒（薬）. Fill that up with water, drink it, and in half-an-hour you'll be dead without knowing it. Of course, you won't take it until there's 絶対 no hope; but, 認めるd that, you'll find this a better death than roasting or baking alive." Then his 発言する／表明する changed suddenly as he went on: "Of course, I need not say, Murgatroyd, how 深く，強烈に I 悔いる now that I asked you to come in the Astronef."
"My lord, my people have served yours for seven hundred years, and, whether on earth or の中で the 星／主役にするs, where you go it is my 義務 to go also. But don't ask me to take the 毒（薬）. It is not for me to say that a 旅行 like this is tempting Providence, but, by my lights, if I am to die it will be the death that Providence sends."
"I daresay you're 権利 in one way, Murgatroyd, but it's no time to argue about beliefs now. There's the 瓶／封じ込める. Do as you think 権利. And now, in 事例／患者 the 奇蹟 doesn't happen, good-bye."
"Good-bye, my lord, if it be so," replied the old Yorkshireman, taking the 手渡す which Redgrave held out to him. "I'll keep the 力／強力にする on to the last, I suppose?"
"Yes, you may 同様に. If it doesn't keep us away from the Sun it won't be much use to us in two or three hours."
He left the engine-room and went 支援する to the conning-tower. Zaidie was still on her 膝s. Beneath and around them the awful 湾 of 炎上 was broadening and 深くするing. 水銀柱，温度計 was rising higher and growing smaller. He put the 瓶／封じ込める 負かす／撃墜する on the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する and waited. Then Zaidie looked up. Her 注目する，もくろむs were （疑いを）晴らす, and her 直面する was perfectly 静める. She rose and put her arm through his, and said:
"井戸／弁護士席, is there any hope, dear? There can't be now, can there? Is that the morphine?"
"Yes," he replied, slipping his arm beneath hers and 一連の会議、交渉／完成する her waist. "I'm afraid there's not much hope now, little womam. We're using up the last of the 力／強力にする, and you see-"
As he said this he looked at the 温度計. The 水銀柱，温度計 had risen from 65 deg. Fahrenheit, the normal 気温 of the 内部の of the Astronef, to 93 deg., and during the half-minute that he watched it rose another degree. There was no mistaking such a 警告 as that. He had brought two little liqueur glasses in his pocket from the saloon. He divided the morphine between them, and filled them up with water.
"Not until the last moment, dear," said Zaidie, as he 始める，決める one of them before her. "We have no 権利 to do it until then."
"Very 井戸／弁護士席. When the 水銀柱，温度計 reaches a hundred and fifty. After that it will go up ten and fifteen degrees at a jump, and we—"
"Yes, at a hundred and fifty," she replied, cutting short a speech she dared not hear the end of. "I understand. It will be impossible to hope any more."
Now, 味方する by 味方する, they stood and watched the 温度計.
Ninety-five—ninety-eight—a hundred and three—a hundred and ten—eighteen— twenty-four—thirty-two —forty-one—
The silent minutes passed, and with each the silver thread—for them the thread of life—grew, with strange contradiction, longer and longer, and with every minute it grew more quickly.
A hundred and forty-six.
With his 権利 arm Redgrave drew Zaidie still closer to him. He put out his left 手渡す and took up the little glass. She did the same.
"Good-bye, dear, till we have slept and wake again!"
"Good-bye, darling, God 認める that we may!" But the agony of that last 別れの（言葉，会） was more than Zaidie could hear. She looked away at the little glass in her 手渡す, a 手渡す which even now did not tremble. Then she raised her 注目する，もくろむs again to take one last look at the glory of the 星／主役にするs, and at the 運命／宿命 incarnate in 炎上 which lay beneath them.
"The Earth, the Earth—thank God, the Earth!"
With the 手渡す that held the draught of Lethe—which in another moment would have passed her lips—she caught at her husband's 手渡す, pulled the glass out of it, and then with a little sigh she dropped senseless on the 床に打ち倒す of the conning-tower. Redgrave looked for a moment in the direction that her 注目する，もくろむs had taken. A pale, silver-grey 三日月, with a little white 位置／汚点／見つけ出す 近づく it, was rising out of the blackness beyond the 辛勝する／優位 of the solar ocean of 炎上. Home was in sight at last, but would they reach it —and how?
He 選ぶd her up and carried her to their room and laid her on the bed. Then he went to the 薬／医学 chest again, this time for a very different 目的.
An hour later, they were on the upper deck with their telescopes turned on to the 速く-growing 三日月 of the home-world, which, in its eternal march through space, had come into the line of direct attraction just in time to turn the 規模 in which the lives of the 星／主役にする-voyagers were trembling. The higher it rose, the bigger and broader and brighter it grew, and, at last, Zaidie—forgetting in her 輸送（する） of joy all the 危険，危なくするs that were yet to come—sprang to her feet and clapped her 手渡すs, and cried:
"There's America!"
Then she dropped 支援する into her long deck-議長，司会を務める and began a good, hearty, healthy cry.
公式文書，認める.—The manner of the ending of the Astronef's marvellous voyage is now as much a 事柄 of public knowledge as are the circumstances of its beginning.
