The Grindwell 治める/統治するing Machine

by

匿名の/不明の

(From The 大西洋 月毎の, 1858)

On the other 味方する of the 大西洋 there is a populous city called Grandville. It is, as its 指名する 示すs, a 広大な/多数の/重要な city,--but it is said that it thinks itself a good 取引,協定 greater than it really is. I meant to say that Grandville was its 初めの 指名する, and the 指名する by which even at the 現在の day it is called by its own 国民s. But there are 確かな wits, or it may be, vulgar people, who by some 過程 have 変えるd this 指名する into Grindwell.

I may be able, in the course of this sketch, to give a 推論する/理由 why so sounding and aristocratic a 指名する as Grandville has been changed into the plebeian one of Grindwell. I might account for it by adducing 類似の instances of changes in the 指名するs of cities through the bad pronunciation and (一定の)期間ing of foreigners. For instance, the English 愛称 Livorno Leghorn, the Germans 主張する on calling Venice Venedig, and the French 変える Washington into the Chinese word Voss- Hang-結社. And so it may be that the 指名する Grindwell has 起こる/始まるd の中で us Americans 簡単に from miscalling or misspelling the foreign 指名する of Grandville.

I incline to think, however, that there is a better 推論する/理由 for the 指名する.

For a good many years Grandville has been famous for a 広大な/多数の/重要な machine, of a very curious construction, which is said to 規制する the movements of the whole city, and almost to 変える the men, women, and children into cranks, wheels, and pinions. As a model of this machine does not 存在する in our 特許 Office at Washington, I shall beg the reader's indulgence while I 試みる/企てる to give some account of it. It may be thought a very curious 事件/事情/状勢, though I believe there is little about it that is 初めの or new. The idea of it was 手渡すd 負かす/撃墜する from remote 世代s.

In America I know that many persons may consider the Grindwell 治める/統治するing Machine a humbug,--an obsolete, absurd, and tyrannous 会・原則, wholly unfitted to the nineteenth century. A machine that 提案するs to think and 行為/法令/行動する for the whole people, and which is rigidly …に反対するd to the people's thinking and 事実上の/代理 for themselves, is likely to find little 好意 の中で us. With us the doctrine is, that each one should think for himself,--be an individual mind and will, and not the spoke of a wheel. Every American 投票者 or votress is 許すd to keep his or her little 知識人 勝利,勝つd-mill, coffee-mill, pepper-mill, ぼんやり現れる, steam-engine, 手渡す-組織/臓器, or whatever moral 製造業の or grinding apparatus he or she likes. Each one may be his own Church or his own 明言する/公表する, and yet be 非,不,無 the いっそう少なく a good and useful 国民, and the union of the 明言する/公表するs be in 非,不,無 the more danger. But it is not so in Grindwell. The 支配するs of the Grindwell machine 許す no one to do his own grinding, unless his mill-wheel is turned by the central 治める/統治するing 力/強力にする. He must 許す the big 明言する/公表する machine to do everything,--he 支払う/賃金ing for it, of course. A 正規の/正選手 programme 定める/命ずるs what he shall believe and say and do; and any 出発 from this order is considered a 違反 of the 法律s, or at least a reprehensible 侵略 of the time-栄誉(を受ける)d customs of the city.

The Grindwell 治める/統治するing Machine (though a 特許 has been taken out for it in Europe, and it is thought everything of by 王室の 長,率いるs and the gilded 飛行機で行くs that buzz about them) is really an old machine, nearly worn out, and every now and then patched up and painted and varnished もう一度. If a 委員会 of our knowing Yankees were sent over to 伸び(る) (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) with regard to its actual 条件, I am inclined to think they would bring 支援する a curious and not very 都合のよい 報告(する)/憶測. It wouldn't astonish me, if they should pronounce the whole apparatus of the 明言する/公表する rotten from 最高の,を越す to 底(に届く), and only kept from 落ちるing to pieces by all sorts of ingenious contrivances of an 外部の and 一時的な nature,--here a wheel, or pivot, or spring to be 取って代わるd,--there a 支え(る) or buttress to be 始める,決める up,--here a 麻薬を吸う choked up,--there a boiler burst,--and so on, from one end of the 作品 to the other. However, the machine keeps a-going, and many persons think it 作品 beautifully.

Everything is 減ずるd to such perfect system in its 操作/手術s, that the necessity for individual opinion is almost superseded, and even 私的な 良心s are laid upon the shelf,--just as people lay by an 古風な timepiece that no winding-up or shaking can 説得する into 場内取引員/株価 the hours,--for have they not the clock on the 政府 鉄道/強行採決する 駅/配置する opposite, which they can at any time 協議する by stepping to the window? For instance, individual honesty is 始める,決める aside and 取って代わるd by a system of rewards and 罰s. Honesty is an old-fashioned coat. The police, like a 広大な/多数の/重要な sponge, 吸収するs the 私的な virtue. It says to 良心, "Stay there,--don't trouble yourself,--I will 行為/法令/行動する for you."

You 減少(する) your purse in the street. A rogue 選ぶs it up. In his 私的な 良心 he says, "Honesty is a very good thing, perhaps, but it is by no means the best 政策,--it is 簡単に no 政策 at all,--it is sheer stupidity. What can be more politic than for me to pocket this windfall and turn the corner quick?"--So preacheth his crooked fag-end of a 良心, that very, very small still 発言する/表明する, in very husky トンs; but he knows that a policeman, walking behind him, saw him 選ぶ up the purse, which alters the 事例/患者,--which, in fact, 完全に 始める,決めるs aside his fag-end of a husky-発言する/表明するd 良心, and makes virtue his necessity, and necessity his virtue. 外部の morality is あわてて drawn on as a decent overcoat to hide the tag-rags of his roguishness, while he magnanimously 回復するs the purse to the owner.

Jones left his umbrella in a cab one night. Discovering that he hadn't it under his arm, he 急ぐd after the cabman; but he was gone. Jones had his number, however, and with it proceeded the next day to the police-office, feeling sure that he would find his umbrella there. And there, in a closet appropriated to articles left in hackney-coaches,-- a perfect limbo of 茎s, parasols, shawls, pocket-調書をとる/予約するs, and what- not,--he 設立する it, ticketed and を待つing its lawful owner. The explanation of which mystery is, that the cabmen in Grindwell are 厳密に amenable to the police for any 出発 from the system which 供給するs for the 安全 of 私的な 所有物/資産/財産, and a 年一回の reward is given to those of the coach-運動ing fraternity who 証明する to be the most faithful restorers of articles left in their carriages. Surely, the result of system can no さらに先に go than this,--that Monsieur Vaurien's moral sense, like his opinions, should be 吸収するd and overruled by the 治める/統治するing 力/強力にするs.

What a 資本/首都 thing it is to have the 広大な/多数の/重要な 政治の 長,率いる and heart thinking and feeling for us! Why, even the little boys, on winter afternoons, are 制限するd by the policemen from 事情に応じて変わる on the ice in the streets, for 恐れる the impetuous little fellows should break or dislocate some of their bones, and the hospital might have the expense of setting them; so patriarchal a regard has the machine for its young friends!

I might allude here to a special department of the machine, which once had 広大な/多数の/重要な 力/強力にする in overruling the thoughts and 良心s of the people, and which is still considered by some as not altogether 権力のない. I 言及する to the Ecclesiastic department of the Grindwell 作品. This was 以前は the greatest laborsaving 機械/機構 ever invented. But however powerful the 操作/手術 of the Church 機械/機構 upon the grandmothers and grandfathers of the modern Grindwellites, it has certainly fallen 大いに into disuse, and is kept a-going now more for the sake of 外見s than for any real efficacy. The most knowing ones think it rather old--fashioned and cumbrous,--at any 率, not 類似の to the 明言する/公表する 機械/機構, either in its design or its 方式 of 操作/手術. And as in these days of (着弾の瞬間に破裂する)着発-caps and 小型の ライフル銃/探して盗むs we lay by an old matchlock or crossbow, using it only to ornament our 塀で囲むs,--or as the 砕くd postilion with his horn and his boots is superseded by the locomotive and the electric telegraph,--so the old rusty Church wheels are 除去するd into buildings apart from the daily life of the people, where they seem to 回転する harmlessly and without any necessary 関係 with the 明言する/公表する wheels.

Not that I mean to say that it 作品 滑らかに and 井戸/弁護士席 at all times,-- this Grindwell machine. How can such an old patched and 崩壊するing apparatus be 推定する/予想するd always to work 井戸/弁護士席? And how can you hope to find, even in the most enslaved or 決まりきった仕事-ridden community, entire obedience to the will of the 君主 and his 衛星s? Unfortunately for the 原因(となる) of order and 静かな, there will always be 設立する 確かな 堅い lumps, in the 形態/調整 of 反抗的な or 非,不,無-conformist men, which 辞退する to be melted in the strong solvents or ground up in the swift mills of Absolutism. 政府 must look after these 妨害s. If they are 前向きに/確かに dangerous, they must be destroyed or 除去するd. If only 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うd, or known to be 権力のない or inactive, they must at least be watched.

And here, again, the machine of 政府 shows a remarkable ingenuity of organization.

For instance, it is said that there are 麻薬を吸うs laid all along the streets, like 靴下/だます, 主要な from a central 貯蔵所. Nobody knows 正確に/まさに what they are for; but if any one steps upon them, up spirts something like a stream of gas, and takes the form of a gendarme,--and the unlucky street-walker must 支払う/賃金 dear for his carelessness. Telegraph wires radiate like cobwebs from the 議会 of the main-spring, and carry 知能 of all that is going on in the houses and streets. Man-罠(にかける)s are laid under the pavements,--いつかs they are 内密に introduced under your very (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する or bed,--and if anything is said against that piece of 機械/機構 called the main-spring, or against the 長,率いる engineer, the 罠(にかける) will 逮捕する you and 飛行機で行く away with you, like the spider that carried off Margery Mopp. If a number of people get together to discuss the meaning of and the 推論する/理由s for the 存在 of the main-spring, or any of the big wheels すぐに connected therewith, the ground under them will いつかs give way, and they will suddenly find themselves in unfurnished apartments not to their liking. And if any one should be so 無分別な as to put his 手渡す on the wheels, he is 削減(する) to pieces or strangled by the silent, incessant, 致命的な whirl of the engine.

The 長,率いる engineer keeps his machine, and the city on which it 行為/法令/行動するs, as much in the dark as possible. He has a special horror of 日光. He seems to think that the sky is one 広大な/多数の/重要な 燃やすing レンズ, and his machine-rooms and the city a 広大な 砕く-magazine.

There are 確かな articles thought to be 特に dangerous. Newspapers are 厳密に forbidden,--unless first 法外なd in a tincture of asbestos of a very dull color, expressly 製造(する)d and 供給(する)d by the 治める/統治するing Machine. When 適切に saturated with the essence of dulness and death, and brought 負かす/撃墜する from a glaring white and 黒人/ボイコット to a decidedly ashy-gray 中立の color, a few small newspapers are permitted to be 循環させるd, but with the greatest 警告を与える. They いつかs take 解雇する/砲火/射撃, it is said,--these 定期刊行物s,--when brought too 近づく any brain overcharged with electricity. Two or three times, it is said, the 治める/統治するing Machine has been put out of order by the newspapers and their readers bringing too much electro-magnetism (or something like it) to 耐える on parts of the 作品;--the machine had even taken 解雇する/砲火/射撃 and been nearly burnt up, and the 長,率いる engineer got so singed that he never dared to take the 管理/経営 of the 作品 again.

So it is thought that nothing is so unfavorable to the working of the wheels as light, heat, electricity, magnetism, and, 一般に, all the imponderable and uncatchable essences that float about in the 空気/公表する; and these, it is thought, are 生成するd and diffused by these villanous newspapers. 確かな 肉親,親類d of 調書をとる/予約するs are also forbidden, as 存在 electric conductors. Most of the 調書をとる/予約するs 許すd in the city of Grindwell are so 激しい, that they are thought to be usually 非,不,無- conductors, and therefore やめる 安全な in the 手渡すs of the people.

It is at the city gates that most vigilance is 要求するd with regard to the 禁じるd articles. There the poor fellows who keep the gates have no 残り/休憩(する) night or day,--so many 怪しげな-looking boxes, bundles, bales, and バーレル/樽s (人命などを)奪う,主張する admittance. 量s of articles are 逮捕(する)d and 妨げるd from entering. Nothing that can in any way 干渉する with the 広大な/多数の/重要な machine can come in. Newspapers and 調書をとる/予約するs from other countries are torn and burnt up. Speaking-trumpets, ear- trumpets, spectacles, microscopes, 秘かに調査する--glasses, telescopes, and, 一般に, all 器具s and contrivances for 延長するing the sphere of ordinary knowledge, are very 辛うじて 診察するd before they are 認める. The only trumpets 自由に 許すd are of a musical sort, fit to amuse the people,--the only spectacles, green goggles to keep out the glare of truth's 日光,--the magnifying-glasses, those which 誇張する the 割合s of the 皇室の 知事 of the 機械/機構. All sorts of moral 雷-棒s and telegraph-wires are 逮捕(する)d, and 嘘(をつく) in 広大な/多数の/重要な piles outside the city 塀で囲むs.

But in spite of the 最大の vigilance and care of the officers at the gates and the sentinels on the 厚い 塀で囲むs, dangerous articles and dangerous people will pass in. A man like Kossuth or Mazzini going through would produce such a 現在の of the electric fluid, that the machine would be in 広大な/多数の/重要な danger of 燃焼. Remonstrances were いつかs sent to 隣接地の cities, to the 影響 that they should keep their light and heat to themselves, and not be throwing such strong reflections into the weak 注目する,もくろむs of the Grindwellites, and putting in danger the 政治の 砕く-magazine,--as the machine- offices were いつかs called. An inundation or bad 収穫, producing a 飢饉 の中で the poor, 原因(となる)s 広大な/多数の/重要な alarm, and the 政治の officers have a time of it, running about 分配するing alms, or raising money to keep 負かす/撃墜する the price of bread. Thousands of servants in livery, 武装した with terrific 器具s for the 破壊 of life, are kept standing on and around the 塀で囲むs of the city, ready at a moment's notice to shoot 負かす/撃墜する any one who makes any movement or demonstration in a direction contrary to the 法律s of the machine. And to support this 広大な/多数の/重要な (人が)群がる of liveried lackeys, the people are squeezed like sponges, till they furnish the necessary money.

The respectable editors of the daily papers go about somewhat as the dogs do in August, with muzzles on their mouths. They are 禁じるd from printing more than a hundred words a day. Any 言及/関連 to the 日光, or to any of the subtile and imponderable 実体s before について言及するd, is considered contrary to the order of the machines; to 補償する for which, there is 広大な/多数の/重要な show of gaslight (under glass covers) throughout the city. Gas and moonshine are the 中心的要素 支配するs of conversation. Besides lighting the streets and shops, the 長,指導者 use of 解雇する/砲火/射撃 seems to be for cooking, lighting 麻薬を吸うs and cigars, and 花火s to amuse the working classes.

広大な/多数の/重要な attention is paid to polishing and beautifying the outer 事例/患者 of the machine, and the outer surface 一般に of the city of Grindwell. Where any 部分 of the 枠組み has fallen into dilapidation and decay, the gaunt 骸骨/概要 bones of the 廃虚d structure are decked and covered with leaves and flowers. Old rusty boilers that are on the 瀬戸際 of bursting are newly painted, varnished, and labelled with letters of gold. The main-spring, which has grown old and weak, is said to be helped by the secret 使用/適用 of steam,--and the 解雇する/砲火/射撃s are fed with 抱擁する bundles of worthless bank-法案s and other paper 約束s. The noise of the clanking piston and wheels is 溺死するd by orchestras of music; the roofs and 味方するs of the machine buildings are covered all over with roses; and the smell of smoke and machine oil is 妨げるd by scattering delicious perfumes. The minds of the populace are turned from the 不安定な 条件 of things by all sorts of public amusements, such as mask balls, theatres, オペラs, public gardens, etc.

But all this does not 保存する some persons from the continual 逮捕 that there will be one day a 広大な/多数の/重要な and terrific 爆発. Some say the city is sleeping over 火山の 解雇する/砲火/射撃s, which will sooner or later burst up from below and destroy or change the whole upper surface. The actual 明言する/公表する of things might be 代表するd on canvas by a gaping, laughing (人が)群がる 圧力(をかける)ing around a Punch-and-Judy 展示 in the street, beneath a 広大な/多数の/重要な 廃虚d palace in the 過程 of 修理ing, where the rickety scaffolding, the loose 石/投石するs and 迫撃砲, and in fact the whole rotten building, may at any moment 倒れる 負かす/撃墜する upon their 長,率いるs.

But while such 墓/厳粛/彫る/重大な thoughts are passing in the minds of some people, I must relate one or two amusing scenes which lately occurred at the city gates.

Travellers are not 禁じるd from going and coming; but on entering, it is necessary to be sure that they bring with their パスポートs and baggage no 禁じるd or dangerous articles. A young man from our 味方する of the 大西洋, engaged in 商業, had been annoyed a good 取引,協定 by the gate-officers 開始 and searching his baggage. The next time he went to Grindwell, he brought, besides his usual trunks and carpet- 捕らえる、獲得するs, a rather large and very mysterious-looking box. After going through with the trunks and 捕らえる、獲得するs, the officers took 持つ/拘留する of this box.

"Gentlemen," said the young practical joker, "I have 広大な/多数の/重要な 反対s to having that box opened. Yet it 含む/封じ込めるs, I 保証する you, nothing contraband, nothing dangerous to the peace of the Grindwell 政府 or people. It is 簡単に a toy I am taking to a friend's house as a Christmas 現在の to his little boy. If I open it, I 恐れる I shall have difficulty in arranging it again as neatly as I wish,--and it would be a 広大な/多数の/重要な 失望 to my little friend Auguste Henri, if he should not find it neatly packed. It would show at once that it had been opened; and children like to have their 現在のs done up nicely, just as they 問題/発行するd from the shop. Gentlemen, I shall take it as a 広大な/多数の/重要な 好意, if you will let it pass."

"Sir," said the 長,率いる officer, "it is impossible to 認める the 好意 you ask. The 政府 is very strict. Many 禁じるd articles have lately 設立する their way in. We are 決定するd to put a stop to it."

"Gentlemen," said the young man, "take 持つ/拘留する of that box,--解除する it. You see how light it is; you see that there can be no contraband goods there,--still いっそう少なく, anything dangerous. I pray you to let it pass."

"Impossible, Sir!" said the officer. "How do I know that there is nothing dangerous there? The 負わせる is nothing. Its lightness rather makes it the more 怪しげな. Boxes like this are usually 激しい. This is something out of the usual course. I'm afraid there's electricity here. Gentlemen officers, proceed to do your 義務!"

So a (人が)群がる of custom-house officers gathered around the 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うd box, with their noses bent 負かす/撃墜する over the lid, を待つing the 開始. One of them was about to proceed with 大打撃を与える and chisel.

"Stop," said the young merchant, "I can save you a 広大な/多数の/重要な 取引,協定 of trouble. I can open it in an instant. 許す me--by touching a little spring here---"

As he said this, he 圧力(をかける)d a secret spring on the 味方する of the box. No sooner was it done than the lid was thrown 支援する with sudden and tremendous 暴力/激しさ, as if by some living 軍隊, and up jumped a hideous and shaggy monster which knocked the six custom-house officers flat on their 支援するs. It was an enormous Punchinello on springs, who had been 限定するd in the box like the Genie in the Arabian story, and by the 幅の広い grin on his 直面する he seemed delighted with his liberty and his 勝利 over his inquisitors. The six officers lay stunned by the blow; and while others ran up to see what was the 事柄, the young traveller 説得するd Mr. Punch 支援する again into his box, and, shutting him 負かす/撃墜する, took advantage of the 混乱 to carry it off with the 残り/休憩(する) of his baggage, and reach a cab in safety. When the officers 回復するd their senses, the practical joker had escaped into the (人が)群がるd city. They could give no (疑いを)晴らす account of what had happened; but I verily believe they thought that Lucifer himself had knocked them 負かす/撃墜する, and was now let loose in the city of Grindwell.

Another amusing 出来事/事件 occurred afterwards at the city gates. An American lady, who was a 広大な/多数の/重要な lover of Art, had 購入(する)d a bronze 破産した/(警察が)手入れする of Plato somewhere on the Continent. She had it carefully boxed, and took it along with her baggage. She got on very 井戸/弁護士席 until she reached the city of Grindwell. Here she was stopped, of course, and her baggage 診察するd. Finding nothing contraband, they were about to let her pass, when they (機の)カム to the box 含む/封じ込めるing the 古代の philosopher's 長,率いる.

"What's this?" they asked. "What's in this box, so 激しい?"

"A 破産した/(警察が)手入れする," said the lady.

"A 破産した/(警察が)手入れする? so 激しい? a 破産した/(警察が)手入れする in a lady's baggage?--Impossible!"

"I 保証する you, it is nothing but a 破産した/(警察が)手入れする."

"Pray, whose 破産した/(警察が)手入れする may it be, Madam?"

"The 破産した/(警察が)手入れする of Plato."

"Plato? Plato? Who is Plato? Is he an Italian?"

"He was a Greek philosopher."

"Why is it so 激しい?"

"It is a bronze 破産した/(警察が)手入れする."

"We beg your 容赦, Madam; but we 恐れる there's something wrong here. This Plato may be a conspirator,--a Carbonaro,--a member of some secret society,--a red-共和国の/共和党の,--a conductor of the electric fluid. How can we answer for this Plato? We don't like this 激しい box;--these very 激しい boxes are 怪しげな. Suppose it should be some infernal- machine. Madam, we have our 疑問s. This box must be 拘留するd till 十分な 調査s are made."

There was no help for it. The box was 拘留するd. "It must be so, Plato!" After waiting several hours, it was brought 今後 in presence of the entire company of inquisitors, and 慎重に opened. Seeing no Plato, but only some sawdust, they grew still more 怪しげな. Having placed the box on the ground, they all retired to a 安全な distance, as if を待つing some 爆発. They evidently took it for an infernal-machine. In their 注目する,もくろむs everything was a machine of some sort or other. After waiting some time, and finding that it didn't burst, nor 放出する even a smell of sulphur, the boldest man of the party approached it very 慎重に, and upset it with his foot and ran.

All this while the lady and her friends stood by, silent 観客s of this farce. The only danger of 爆発 was on their part, with laughter at the whole scene. They contrived, however, to keep their countenances, though いっそう少なく rigidly than the Greek philosopher in the box did his.

When the custom-house 公式の/役人s 設立する, that, though the box was upset, nothing occurred, they grew more bold, and, approaching, saw a piece of the bronze 長,率いる peering above the sawdust. Then, for the first time, they began to feel ashamed of themselves. So 取って代わるing the sawdust and the cover, they 許すd the box to pass into the city, and tried, by 避けるing to speak of the 事件/事情/状勢 の中で themselves to forget what donkeys they had been.

The Grindwell 政府 has many such alarms, and never appears 完全に at its 緩和する. It is fully aware of the combustible nature of the 構成要素 parts of the 治める/統治するing Machine. There is その結果 広大な/多数の/重要な 支出 of means to insure its safety. An 巨大な number of public 秘かに調査するs and functionaries are 絶えず 雇うd in looking after the 解雇する/砲火/射撃s and lights about the city. 激しい 制限s are laid on all 実体s 含む/封じ込めるing electricity, and 広大な/多数の/重要な care is taken lest this subtile fluid should condense in 位置/汚点/見つけ出すs and take the form of 雷. Fortunately, the unclouded 日光 seldom comes into Grindwell, else there would be the same 恐れるs with regard to light.

So long as this perpetual 監視 is kept up, the machine seems to work on 井戸/弁護士席 enough in the main; but the moment there is any remissness on the part of the police,--bang! goes a small 爆発 somewhere,--or, 割れ目! a bit of the 機械/機構,--and out 急ぐ the engineers with their 捕らえる、獲得するs of cotton-wool or 牽引する to stop up the chinks, or their bundles of paper money to keep up the steam, or their buckets of oil and soft soap to 注ぐ upon the wheels.

One eccentric gentleman of my 知識 固執するs in 予報するing that any day there may be a general blow-up, and the whole 関心, engineers, financiers, priests, 兵士s, and flunkies, all go to 粉砕する. He evidently wishes to see it; though, as far as personal 慰安 goes, one would rather be out of the way at such a time.

Most people seem to think, that, considering all things, the 現在の 長,率いる engineer is about the best man that could be 設立する for the 地位,任命する he 占領するs. There are, however, a number of the Grindwell people--I can't say how many, for they are afraid to speak--who feel more and more that they are living in a stifled and altogether 異常な 条件, and wish for an 不明確な/無期限の 供給(する) of the light, heat, 空気/公表する, and electricity which they see some of the 隣接地の cities enjoying.

What the result is to be no one can yet tell. We are such stuff as dreams are made of, and our little life is 一連の会議、交渉/完成するd with--a crust; some say, a very thin crust, such as might be got up by a skilful patissier, and over which gilded 法廷,裁判所-飛行機で行くs, and even scarabaei, may はう with safety, but which must 必然的に 洞穴 in beneath the boot- heels of a real, true, thinking man. We cannot forget that there are measureless catacombs and caverns yawning beneath the streets and houses of modern Grindwell.
