PROFESSOR CHALLENGER was in the worst possible humour. As I stood at the door of his 熟考する／考慮する, my 手渡す upon the 扱う and my foot upon the mat, I heard a monologue which ran like this, the words にわか景気ing and reverberating through the house:

'Yes, I say it is the second wrong call. The second in one morning. Do you imagine that a man of science is to be distracted from 必須の work by the constant 干渉，妨害 of some idiot at the end of a wire? I will not have it. Send this instant for the 経営者／支配人. Oh! you are the 経営者／支配人. 井戸／弁護士席, why don't you manage? Yes, you certainly manage to distract me from work the importance of which your mind is incapable of understanding. I want the superintendent. He is away? So I should imagine. I will carry you to the 法律 法廷，裁判所s if this occurs again. Crowing cocks have been adjudicated upon. I myself have 得るd a 裁判／判断. If crowing cocks, why not jangling bells? The 事例／患者 is （疑いを）晴らす. A written 陳謝. Very good. I will consider it. Good morning.'

It was at this point that I 投機・賭けるd to make my 入り口. It was certainly an unfortunate moment. I 直面するd him as he turned from the telephone —a lion in its wrath. His 抱擁する 黒人／ボイコット 耐えるd was bristling, his 広大な／多数の／重要な chest was heaving with indignation, and his arrogant grey 注目する，もくろむs swept me up and 負かす／撃墜する as the backwash of his 怒り／怒る fell upon me.

'Infernal, idle, overpaid rascals!' he にわか景気d. 'I could hear them laughing while I was making my just （民事の）告訴. There is a 共謀 to annoy me. And now, young Malone, you arrive to 完全にする a 悲惨な morning. Are you here, may I ask, on your own account, or has your rag （売買）手数料，委託（する）／委員会／権限d you to 得る an interview? As a friend you are 特権d —as a 新聞記者／雑誌記者 you are outside the pale.'

I was 追跡（する）ing in my pocket for McArdle's letter when suddenly some new grievance （機の）カム to his memory. His 広大な／多数の／重要な hairy 手渡すs fumbled about の中で the papers upon his desk and finally 抽出するd a 圧力（をかける） cutting.

'You have been good enough to allude to me in one of your 最近の lucubrations,' he said, shaking the paper at me. 'It was in the course of your somewhat fatuous 発言／述べるs 関心ing the 最近の Saurian remains discovered in the Solenhofen 予定するs. You began a paragraph with the words: "Professor G.E. 挑戦者, who is の中で our greatest living scientists—"'

'井戸／弁護士席, sir?' I asked.

'Why these invidious 資格s and 制限s? Perhaps you can について言及する who these other predominant 科学の men may be to whom you impute equality, or かもしれない 優越 to myself?'

'It was 不正に worded. I should certainly have said: "Our greatest living scientist,"' I 認める. It was after all my own honest belief. My words turned winter into summer.

'My dear young friend, do not imagine that I am exacting, but surrounded as I am by pugnacious and 不当な 同僚s, one is 軍隊d to take one's own part. Self-主張 is foreign to my nature, but I have to 持つ／拘留する my ground against 対立. Come now! Sit here! What is the 推論する／理由 of your visit?'

I had to tread warily, for I knew how 平易な it was to 始める，決める the lion roaring once again. I opened McArdle's letter. 'May I read you this, sir? It is from McArdle, my editor.'

'I remember the man —not an unfavourable 見本／標本 of his class.'

'He has, at least, a very high 賞賛 for you. He has turned to you again and again when he needed the highest 質s in some 調査. That is the 事例／患者 now.'

'What does he 願望（する）?' 挑戦者 plumed himself like some unwieldy bird under the 影響（力） of flattery. He sat 負かす／撃墜する with his 肘s upon the desk, his gorilla 手渡すs clasped together, his 耐えるd bristling 今後, and his big grey 注目する，もくろむs, half-covered by his drooping lids, 直す／買収する，八百長をするd benignly upon me. He was 抱擁する in all that he did, and his benevolence was even more overpowering than his truculence.

'I'll read you his 公式文書，認める to me. He says:

Please call upon our esteemed friend, Professor 挑戦者, and ask for his co-操作／手術 in the に引き続いて circumstances. There is a Latvian gentleman 指名するd Theodore Nemor living at White Friars Mansions, Hampstead, who （人命などを）奪う，主張するs to have invented a machine of a most 驚くべき／特命の／臨時の character which is 有能な of 崩壊するing any 反対する placed within its sphere of 影響（力）. 事柄 解散させるs and returns to its molecular or 原子の 条件. By 逆転するing the 過程 it can be 組立て直すd. The （人命などを）奪う，主張する seems to be an extravagant one, and yet there is solid 証拠 that there is some basis for it and that the man has つまずくd upon some remarkable 発見.

I need not 大きくする upon the 革命の character of such an 発明, nor of its extreme importance as a 可能性のある 武器 of war. A 軍隊 which could 崩壊する a 戦艦, or turn a 大隊, if it were only for a time, into a collection of 原子s, would 支配する the world. For social and for political 推論する／理由s not an instant is to be lost in getting to the 底（に届く） of the 事件／事情／状勢. The man 法廷，裁判所s publicity as he is anxious to sell his 発明, so that there is no difficulty in approaching him. The enclosed card will open his doors. What I 願望（する） is that you and Professor 挑戦者 shall call upon him, 検査／視察する his 発明, and 令状 for the Gazette a considered 報告（する）／憶測 upon the value of the 発見. I 推定する／予想する to hear from you to-night.

'There are my 指示／教授／教育s, Professor,' I 追加するd, as I refolded the letter. 'I 心から hope that you will come with me, for how can I, with my 限られた／立憲的な capacities, 行為／法令／行動する alone in such a 事柄?'

'True, Malone! True!' purred the 広大な／多数の／重要な man. 'Though you are by no means destitute of natural 知能, I agree with you that you would be somewhat overweighted in such a 事柄 as you lay before me. These unutterable people upon the telephone have already 廃虚d my morning's work, so that a little more can hardly 事柄. I am engaged in answering that Italian buffoon, Mazotti, whose 見解（をとる）s upon the larval 開発 of the 熱帯の termites have excited my derision and contempt, but I can leave the 完全にする （危険などに）さらす of the impostor until evening. 一方／合間, I am at your service.'

And thus it （機の）カム about that on that October morning I 設立する myself in the 深い level tube with the Professor スピード違反 to the North of London in what 証明するd to be one of the most singular experiences of my remarkable life.

I had, before leaving Enmore Gardens, ascertained by the much-乱用d telephone that our man was at home, and had 警告するd him of our coming. He lived in a comfortable flat in Hampstead, and he kept us waiting for やめる half an hour in his 賭け金-room whilst he carried on an animated conversation with a group of 訪問者s, whose 発言する／表明するs, as they finally bade 別れの（言葉，会） in the hall, showed that they were ロシアのs. I caught a glimpse of them through the half-opened door, and had a passing impression of 繁栄する and intelligent men, with astrakhan collars to their coats, glistening 最高の，を越す-hats, and every 外見 of that bourgeois 井戸／弁護士席-存在 which the successful 共産主義者 so readily assumes. The hall door の近くにd behind them, and the next instant Theodore Nemor entered our apartment. I can see him now as he stood with the sunlight 十分な upon him, rubbing his long, thin 手渡すs together and 調査するing us with his 幅の広い smile and his cunning yellow 注目する，もくろむs.

He was a short, 厚い man, with some suggestion of deformity in his 団体／死体, though it was difficult to say where that suggestion lay. One might say that he was a hunchback without the hump. His large, soft 直面する was like an underdone dumpling, of the same colour and moist consistency, while the pimples and blotches which adorned it stood out the more 積極性 against the pallid background. His 注目する，もくろむs were those of a cat, and catlike was the thin, long, bristling moustache above his loose, wet, slobbering mouth. It was all low and repulsive until one （機の）カム to the sandy eyebrows. From these 上向きs there was a splendid cranial arch such as I have seldom seen. Even 挑戦者's hat might have fitted that magnificent 長，率いる. One might read Theodore Nemor as a vile, はうing conspirator below, but above he might take 階級 with the 広大な／多数の／重要な thinkers and philosophers of the world.

'井戸／弁護士席, gentlemen,' said he, in a velvety 発言する／表明する with only the least trace of a foreign accent, 'you have come, as I understand from our short 雑談（する） over the wires, ーするために learn more of the Nemor Disintegrator. Is it so?'

'正確に／まさに.'

'May I ask whether you 代表する the British 政府?'

'Not at all. I am a 特派員 of the Gazette, and this is Professor 挑戦者.'

'An honoured 指名する —a European 指名する.' His yellow fangs gleamed in obsequious amiability. 'I was about to say that the British 政府 has lost its chance. What else it has lost it may find out later. かもしれない its Empire 同様に. I was 用意が出来ている to sell to the first 政府 which gave me its price, and if it has now fallen into 手渡すs of which you may disapprove, you have only yourselves to 非難する.'

'Then you have sold your secret?'

'At my own price.'

'You think the purchaser will have a monopoly?'

'Undoubtedly he will.'

'But others know the secret 同様に as you.'

'No, sir.' He touched his 広大な／多数の／重要な forehead.

'This is the 安全な in which the secret is securely locked —a better 安全な than any of steel, and 安全な・保証するd by something better than a Yale 重要な. Some may know one 味方する of the 事柄: others may know another. No one in the world knows the whole 事柄 save only I.'

'And these gentlemen to whom you have sold it.'

'No, sir; I am not so foolish as to を引き渡す the knowledge until the price is paid. After that it is I whom they buy, and they move this 安全な' he again tapped his brow 'with all its contents to whatever point they 願望（する）. My part of the 取引 will then be done —faithfully, ruthlessly done. After that, history will be made.' He rubbed his 手渡すs together and the 直す／買収する，八百長をするd smile upon his 直面する 新たな展開d itself into something like a snarl.

'You will excuse me, sir,' にわか景気d 挑戦者, who had sat in silence up to now, but whose expressive 直面する 登録（する）d most 完全にする 不賛成 of Theodore Nemor, 'we should wish before we discuss the 事柄 to 納得させる ourselves that there is something to discuss. We have not forgotten a 最近の 事例／患者 where an Italian, who 提案するd to 爆発する 地雷s from a distance, 証明するd upon 調査 to be an arrant impostor. History may 井戸／弁護士席 repeat itself. You will understand, sir, that I have a 評判 to 支える as a man of science —a 評判 which you have been good enough to 述べる as European, though I have every 推論する／理由 to believe that it is not いっそう少なく 目だつ in America. 警告を与える is a 科学の せいにする, and you must show us your proofs before we can 本気で consider your （人命などを）奪う，主張するs.'

Nemor cast a 特に malignant ちらりと見ること from the yellow 注目する，もくろむs at my companion, but the smile of 影響する／感情d geniality broadened his 直面する.

'You live up to your 評判, Professor. I had always heard that you were the last man in the world who could be deceived. I am 用意が出来ている to give you an actual demonstration which cannot fail to 納得させる you, but before we proceed to that I must say a few words upon the general 原則.

'You will realize that the 実験の 工場／植物 which I have 築くd here in my 研究室／実験室 is a mere model, though within its 限界s it 行為／法令／行動するs most admirably. There would be no possible difficulty, for example, in 崩壊するing you and 組立て直すing you, but it is not for such a 目的 as that that a 広大な／多数の／重要な 政府 is 用意が出来ている to 支払う／賃金 a price which runs into millions. My model is a mere 科学の toy. It is only when the same 軍隊 is invoked upon a large 規模 that enormous practical 影響s could be 達成するd.'

'May we see this model?'

'You will not only see it, Professor 挑戦者, but you will have the most conclusive demonstration possible upon your own person, if you have the courage to 服従させる／提出する to it.'

'If!' the lion began to roar. 'Your "if," sir, is in the highest degree 不快な／攻撃.'

'井戸／弁護士席, 井戸／弁護士席. I had no 意向 to 論争 your courage. I will only say that I will give you an 適切な時期 to 論証する It. But I would first say a few words upon the underlying 法律s which 治める／統治する the 事柄.

'When 確かな 水晶s, salt, for example, or sugar, are placed in water they 解散させる and disappear. You would not know that they have ever been there. Then by evaporation or さもなければ you 少なくなる the 量 of water, and lo! there are your 水晶s again, 明白な once more and the same as before. Can you conceive a 過程 by which you, an 有機の 存在, are in the same way 解散させるd into the cosmos, and then by a subtle 逆転 of the 条件s 組立て直すd once more?'

'The analogy is a 誤った one,' cried 挑戦者. 'Even if I make so monstrous an admission as that our 分子s could be 分散させるd by some 混乱に陥れる／中断させるing 力／強力にする, why should they 組立て直す in 正確に／まさに the same order as before?'

'The 反対 is an obvious one, and I can only answer that they do so 組立て直す 負かす／撃墜する to the last 原子 of the structure. There is an invisible 枠組み and every brick 飛行機で行くs into its true place. You may smile, Professor, but your incredulity and your smile may soon be 取って代わるd by やめる another emotion.'

挑戦者 shrugged his shoulders. 'I am やめる ready to 服従させる／提出する it to the 実験（する）.'

'There is another 事例／患者 which I would impress upon you, gentlemen, and which may help you to しっかり掴む the idea. You have heard both in Oriental 魔法 and in Western occultism of the 現象 of the apport when some 反対する is suddenly brought from a distance and appears in a new place. How can such a thing be done save by the 緩和するing of the 分子s, their conveyance upon an etheric wave, and their 組立て直すing, each 正確に／まさに in its own place, drawn together by some irresistible 法律? That seems a fair analogy to that which is done by my machine.'

'You cannot explain one incredible thing by 引用するing another incredible thing,' said 挑戦者. 'I do not believe in your apports, Mr. Nemor, and I do not believe in your machine. My time is 価値のある, and if we are to have any sort of demonstration I would beg you to proceed with it without その上の 儀式.'

'Then you will be pleased to follow me,' said the inventor. He led us 負かす／撃墜する the stair of the flat and across a small garden which lay behind. There was a かなりの outhouse, which he 打ち明けるd and we entered.

Inside was a large whitewashed room with innumerable 巡査 wires hanging in festoons from the 天井, and a 抱擁する magnet balanced upon a pedestal. In 前線 of this was what looked like a prism of glass, three feet in length and about a foot in 直径. To the 権利 of it was a 議長，司会を務める which 残り／休憩（する）d upon a 壇・綱領・公約 of zinc, and which had a burnished 巡査 cap 一時停止するd above it. Both the cap and the 議長，司会を務める had 激しい wires 大（公）使館員d to them, and at the 味方する was a sort of ratchet with numbered slots and a 扱う covered with indiarubber which lay at 現在の in the slot 示すd 無.

'Nemor's Disintegrator,' said this strange man, waving his 手渡す に向かって the machine.

'This is the model which is 運命にあるd to be famous, as altering the balance of 力／強力にする の中で the nations. Who 持つ／拘留するs this 支配するs the world. Now, Professor 挑戦者, you have, if I may say so, 扱う／治療するd me with some 欠如（する） of 儀礼 and consideration in this 事柄. Will you dare to sit upon that 議長，司会を務める and to 許す me to 論証する upon your own 団体／死体 the 能力s of the new 軍隊?'

挑戦者 had the courage of a lion, and anything in the nature of a 反抗 roused him in an instant to a frenzy He 急ぐd at the machine, but I 掴むd his arm and held him 支援する.

'You shall not go,' I said. 'Your life is too 価値のある. It is monstrous. What possible 保証（人） of safety have you? The nearest approach to that apparatus which I have ever seen was the electrocution 議長，司会を務める at Sing Sing.'

'My 保証（人） of safety,' said 挑戦者, 'is that you are a 証言，証人／目撃する and that this person would certainly be held for 過失致死 at the least should anything 生じる me.'

'That would be a poor なぐさみ to the world of science, when you would leave work unfinished which 非，不，無 but you can do. Let me, at least, go first, and then, when the experience 証明するs to be 害のない, you can follow.'

Personal danger would never have moved 挑戦者, but the idea that his 科学の work might remain unfinished 攻撃する，衝突する him hard. He hesitated, and before he could （不足などを）補う his mind I had dashed 今後 and jumped into the 議長，司会を務める. I saw the inventor put his 手渡す to the 扱う. I was aware of a click. Then for a moment there was a sensation of 混乱 and a もや before my 注目する，もくろむs. When they （疑いを）晴らすd, the inventor with his 嫌悪すべき smile was standing before me, and 挑戦者, with his apple-red cheeks drained of 血 and colour, was 星／主役にするing over his shoulder.

'井戸／弁護士席, get on with it!' said I.

'It is all over. You 答える／応じるd admirably,' Nemor replied. 'Step out, and Professor 挑戦者 will now, no 疑問, be ready to take his turn.'

I have never seen my old friend so utterly upset. His アイロンをかける 神経 had for a moment 完全に failed him. He しっかり掴むd my arm with a shaking 手渡す.

'My God, Malone, it is true,' said he. 'You 消えるd. There is not a 疑問 of it. There was a もや for an instant and then vacancy.'

'How long was I away?'

'Two or three minutes. I was, I 自白する, horrified. I could not imagine that you would return. Then he clicked this lever, if it is a lever, into a new slot and there you were upon the 議長，司会を務める, looking a little bewildered but さもなければ the same as ever. I thanked God at the sight of you!' He mopped his moist brow with his big red handkerchief.

'Now, sir,' said the inventor. 'Or perhaps your 神経 has failed you?'

挑戦者 visibly を締めるd himself. Then, 押し進めるing my 抗議するing 手渡す to one 味方する, he seated himself upon the 議長，司会を務める. The 扱う clicked into number three. He was gone.

I should have been horrified but for the perfect coolness of the 操作者. 'It is an 利益／興味ing 過程, is it not?' he 発言／述べるd. 'When one considers the tremendous individuality of the Professor it is strange to think that he is at 現在の a molecular cloud 一時停止するd in some 部分 of this building. He is now, of course, 完全に at my mercy. If I choose to leave him in 中断 there is nothing on earth to 妨げる me.'

'I would very soon find means to 妨げる you.'

The smile once again became a snarl. 'You cannot imagine that such a thought ever entered my mind. Good heavens! Think of the 永久の 解散 of the 広大な／多数の／重要な Professor 挑戦者 消えるd into cosmic space and left no trace! Terrible! Terrible! At the same time he has not been as courteous as he might. Don't you think some small lesson —?'

'No, I do not.'

'井戸／弁護士席, we will call it a curious demonstration. Something that would make an 利益／興味ing paragraph in your paper. For example, I have discovered that the hair of the 団体／死体 存在 on an 完全に different vibration to the living 有機の tissues can be 含むd or 除外するd at will. It would 利益／興味 me to see the 耐える without his bristles. Behold him!'

There was the click of the lever. An instant later 挑戦者 was seated upon the 議長，司会を務める once more. But what a 挑戦者! What a shorn lion! Furious as I was at the trick that had been played upon him I could hardly keep from roaring with laughter.

His 抱擁する 長，率いる was as bald as a baby's and his chin was as smooth as a girl's. Bereft of his glorious mane the lower part of his 直面する was ひどく jowled and ham-形態／調整d, while his whole 外見 was that of an old fighting gladiator, 乱打するd and bulging, with the jaws of a bulldog over a 大規模な chin.

It may have been some look upon our 直面するs —I have no 疑問 that the evil grin of my companion had 広げるd at the sight —but, however that may be, 挑戦者's 手渡す flew up to his 長，率いる and he became conscious of his 条件. The next instant he had sprung out of his 議長，司会を務める, 掴むd the inventor by the throat, and had 投げつけるd him to the ground. Knowing 挑戦者's 巨大な strength I was 納得させるd that the man would be killed.

'For God's sake be careful. If you kill him we can never get 事柄s 権利 again!' I cried.

That argument 勝つ／広く一帯に広がるd. Even in his maddest moments 挑戦者 was always open to 推論する／理由. He sprang up from the 床に打ち倒す, dragging the trembling inventor with him. 'I give you five minutes,' he panted in his fury. 'If in five minutes I am not as I was, I will choke the life out of your wretched little 団体／死体.'

挑戦者 in a fury was not a 安全な person to argue with. The bravest man might 縮む from him, and there were no 調印するs that Mr. Nemor was a 特に 勇敢に立ち向かう man. On the contrary, those blotches and warts upon his 直面する had suddenly become much more 目だつ as the 直面する behind them changed from the colour of putty, which was normal, to that of a fish's belly. His 四肢s were shaking and he could hardly articulate.

'Really, Professor!' he babbled, with his 手渡す to his throat, 'this 暴力／激しさ is やめる unnecessary. Surely a 害のない joke may pass の中で friends. It was my wish to 論証する the 力／強力にするs of the machine. I had imagined that you 手配中の，お尋ね者 a 十分な demonstration. No offence, I 保証する you. Professor, 非，不，無 in the world!'

For answer 挑戦者 climbed 支援する into the 議長，司会を務める.

'You will keep your 注目する，もくろむ upon him, Malone. Do not 許す any liberties.'

'I'll see to it, sir.'

'Now then, 始める，決める that 事柄 権利 or take the consequences.'

The terrified inventor approached his machine. The 再会させるing 力／強力にする was turned on to the 十分な, and in an instant, there was the old lion with his 絡まるd mane once more. He 一打／打撃d his 耐えるd affectionately with his 手渡すs and passed them over his cranium to be sure that the 復古／返還 was 完全にする. Then he descended solemnly from his perch.

'You have taken a liberty, sir, which might have had very serious consequences to yourself. However, I am content to 受託する your explanation that you only did it for 目的s of demonstration. Now, may I ask you a few direct questions upon this remarkable 力／強力にする which you （人命などを）奪う，主張する to have discovered?'

'I am ready to answer anything save what the source of the 力／強力にする is. That is my secret.'

'And do you 本気で 知らせる us that no one in the world knows this except yourself?'

'No one has the least inkling.'

'No assistants?'

'No, sir. I work alone.'

'Dear me! That is most 利益／興味ing. You have 満足させるd me as to the reality of the 力／強力にする, but I do not yet perceive its practical bearings.'

'I have explained, sir, that this is a model. But it would be やめる 平易な to 築く a 工場／植物 upon a large 規模. You understand that this 行為／法令／行動するs vertically. 確かな 現在のs above you, and 確かな others below you, 始める，決める up vibrations which either 崩壊する or 再会させる. But the 過程 could be lateral. If it were so 行為／行うd it would have the same 影響, and cover a space in 割合 to the strength of the 現在の.'

'Give an example.'

'We will suppose that one 政治家 was in one small 大型船 and one in another; a 戦艦 between them would 簡単に 消える into 分子s. So also with a column of 軍隊／機動隊s.'

'And you have sold this secret as a monopoly to a 選び出す／独身 European 力／強力にする?'

'Yes, sir, I have. When the money is paid over they shall have such 力／強力にする as no nation ever had yet. You don't even now see the 十分な 可能性s if placed in 有能な 手渡すs 手渡すs which did not 恐れる to （権力などを）行使する the 武器 which they held. They are immeasurable.' A gloating smile passed over the man's evil 直面する.
