"YOU'LL do what I tell you—or else!" Duke Tremayne smiled cruelly as he 配達するd his 最終提案. Across the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する from him Arline Ellis clenched her white 手渡すs in helpless 激怒(する). Duke Tremayne, world adventurer, was tall, わずかな/ほっそりした, darkly mustached, handsome in a ruthless way; and many women looked on him with 好意. But Arline hated him, with as good 推論する/理由 as she 恐れるd him.

But she 投機・賭けるd a ゆらめく of 反乱.

"I won't do it! It's too risky!"

"Not half as risky as 反抗するing me!" he reminded her. "I've got you by the seat of your pretty pants, my dear. How would you like to have me tell the police why you left Canton in such a hurry? Or tell them my 見解/翻訳/版 of that night in Baron Takayami's apartment—"

"Hush!" she begged. She was trembling as she ちらりと見ることd fearfully about the little curtained alcove in which they sat. It was 井戸/弁護士席 off the main 床に打ち倒す of the Bordeaux Cabaret; even the music from the native orchestra (機の)カム only faintly to their ears. They were alone, but the words he had just spoken were dynamite, not even 安全な for empty 塀で囲むs to hear.

"You know I didn't kill him—"

"So you say. But who'd believe you if I swore I saw you do it?"

She bent her 長,率いる in 敗北・負かす. This was the price she must 支払う/賃金 for an hour of folly. In Canton she had been indiscreet enough to visit the apartments of a 確かな important Japanese 公式の/役人. It had been only the 害のない escapade of a thrill-追跡(する)ing girl.

She had 設立する more thrills than she 手配中の,お尋ね者, when the 公式の/役人 had been 殺人d, almost before her 注目する,もくろむs, by his servant, who she was sure was a ロシアの 秘かに調査する. The 殺害者 had fled, and so had she, but not before she had been seen leaving the house by Duke Tremayne, a friend of the 殺害された 公式の/役人. He had kept silent. But the 殺害者 had taken important 文書s with him in his flight, and there was hell to 支払う/賃金 in 外交の circles.

It had been an international episode, that almost 始める,決める the big guns of war roaring in the East. The 殺人 and 窃盗 remained an 未解決の mystery to the world 捕まらないで, a 負傷させる that still rankled in the 資本/首都s of the Orient.

Arline had fled the city in a panic, realizing she could never 証明する her innocence, if connected with the 事件/事情/状勢. Tremayne had followed her to Shanghai and laid his cards on the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する. If she did not 従う with his wishes, he'd go to the police and 断言する he saw her 殺人 the Jap. And she knew his 証言 would send her to a 解雇する/砲火/射撃ing squad, for さまざまな 政府s were eager for a scape-goat with which to conciliate the wrathful Nipponese.

Terrified, Arline submitted to the ゆすり,恐喝. And now Tremayne had told her the price of his silence. It was not what she had 推定する/予想するd, though, from the look in his 注目する,もくろむs as he devoured her 削減する 人物/姿/数字 from blonde hair to French heels, she felt it would come to that 結局. But here in the Bordeaux, a shady rendezvous in the shadowy borderland between the European and the native 4半期/4分の1s, he had 始める,決める her a 仕事 that made her flesh はう.

He had 命令(する)d her to steal the famous Heart of Erlik, the purple ruby belonging to Woon Yuen, a Chinese merchant of powerful and 悪意のある 関係s.

"So many men have tried," she argued. "How can I hope to 後継する? I'll be 設立する floating in the Yangtze with my throat 削減(する), just as they were."

"You'll 後継する," he retorted. "They tried 軍隊 or (手先の)技術; we'll use a woman's 戦略. I've learned where he keeps it—had a 秘かに調査する working in his 雇う and he learned that much. He keeps it in a 塀で囲む 安全な that looks like a dragon's 長,率いる, in the inner 議会 of his antique shop, where he keeps his rarest goods, and where he never 収容する/認めるs anybody but 豊富な women collectors. He entertains them there alone, which makes it 平易な."

"But how am I going to steal it, with him in there with me?"

"平易な!" he snapped. "He always serves his guests tea. You watch your chance and 減少(する) this knock-out pill in his tea."

He 圧力(をかける)d a tiny, faintly odorous sphere into her 手渡す.

"He'll go out like a candle. Then you open the 安全な, take the ruby and skip. It's like taking candy from a baby. One 推論する/理由 I 選ぶd you for this 職業, you have a natural gift for unraveling Chinese puzzles. The 安全な doesn't have a dial. You 圧力(をかける) the dragon's teeth. In what combination, I don't know. That's for you to find out."

"But how am I going to get into the inner 議会?" she 需要・要求するd.

"That's the cream of the 計画/陰謀," he 保証するd her. "Did you ever hear of Lady Elizabeth Willoughby? 井戸/弁護士席, every antique 売買業者 in the Orient knows her by sight or 評判. She's never been to Shanghai, though, and I don't believe Woon Yuen ever saw her. That'll make it 平易な to fool him. She's a young English woman with exotic ideas and she spends her time wandering around the world collecting rare Oriental art treasures. She's 価値(がある) millions, and she's a 解放する/自由な spender.

"井戸/弁護士席, you look enough like her in a general way to fit in with any description Woon Yuen's likely to have heard. You're about the same 高さ, same color of hair and 注目する,もくろむs, same 肉親,親類d of 人物/姿/数字—" his 注目する,もくろむs lit with 賞賛 as they dwelt on the 削減する curves of bosom and hips. "And you can 行為/法令/行動する, too. You can put on an English accent that would fool the Prince of むちの跡s, and 行為/法令/行動する the high-born lady to a queen's taste.

"I've seen Lady Elizabeth's cards, and before I left Canton I had one made, to match. You see I had this in mind, even then." He passed her a curious slip of paper-thin jade, carved with scrawling Chinese characters.

"Her 指名する, of course, in Chinese. She spends a small fortune on cards like that, alone. Now go 支援する to your apartment and change into the duds I had sent up there—scarlet silk dress, jade-green hat, slippers with ivory heels, and a jade brooch. That's the way Lady Elizabeth always dresses. Eccentric? You said it! Go to Woon Yuen's shop and tell him you want to see the ivory Bon. He keeps it in the inner 議会. When you get in there, do your stuff, but be careful! They say Woon Yuen worships that ruby, and 燃やすs incense to it. But you'll pull the wool over his 注目する,もくろむs, all 権利. Be careful he doesn't 落ちる for you! Couldn't 非難する him if he did."

He was leaning toward her, and his 手渡す was on her 膝. She flinched at the feel of his 追求(する),探索(する)ing fingers. She loathed his caresses, but she dared not 撃退する him. He was arrogantly possessive, and she did not 疑問 that when—and if—she returned with the coveted gem, he would 需要・要求する the ultimate 降伏する. And she knew she would not dare 辞退する him. 涙/ほころびs of helpless 悲惨 井戸/弁護士席d to her 注目する,もくろむs, but he ignored them. Grudgingly he withdrew his 手渡す and rose.

"Go out by the 支援する way. When you get the ruby, 会合,会う me at room Number 7, in the Alley of ネズミs—you know the place. Shanghai will be too hot for you, and we'll have to get you out of town in a hurry. And remember, sweetheart," his 発言する/表明する grew hard as his predatory 注目する,もくろむs, and his arm about her waist was more a 脅し than a caress, "if you 二塁打-cross me, or if you flop on this 職業, I'll see you stood before a Jap 解雇する/砲火/射撃ing squad if it's the last thing I do. I won't 受託する any excuses, either. Get me?"

His fingers 小衝突d her chin, 追跡するd over the soft white curve of her throat, to her shoulder; and as he 発言する/表明するd his 脅し, he dug them in like talons, 強調するing his 命令(する) with a brutality that made Arline bite her lip to keep from crying out with 苦痛.

"Yes, I get you."

"All 権利. Get going." He spanked her lightly and 押し進めるd her toward a door opposite the curtained 入り口 beyond which the music blared.

The door opened into a long 狭くする alley that 結局 reached the street. As Arline went 負かす/撃墜する this alley, seething with 反乱 and 狼狽 for the 仕事 ahead of her, a man stepped from a doorway and stopped her. She 注目する,もくろむd him suspiciously, though 隠すing a secret throb of 賞賛 for a 罰金 masculine 人物/姿/数字.

He was big, 幅の広い-shouldered, 激しい-握りこぶしd, with smoldering blue 注目する,もくろむs and a mop of unruly 黒人/ボイコット hair under a 味方する-攻撃するd 船員's cap. And he was Wild 法案 Clanton, sailor, gun-走者, blackbirder, pearl-poacher, and fighting man de luxe.

"Will you get out of my way?" she 需要・要求するd.

"Wait a minute, kid!" He 閉めだした her way with a 激しい arm, and his 注目する,もくろむs 炎d as they ran over the smooth bland curves of her blond loveliness. "Why do you always give me the shoulder? I've made it a point to run into you in a dozen ports, and you always 行為/法令/行動する like I had the 疫病/悩ます."

"You have, as far as I'm 関心d," she retorted.

"You seem to think Duke Tremayne's healthy," he growled resentfully.

She flinched at the 指名する of her master, but answered spiritedly: "What I see in Duke Tremayne's 非,不,無 of your 商売/仕事. Now let me pass!"

But instead he caught her arm in a 支配する that 傷つける.

"Damn your saucy little soul!" he ripped out, 怒り/怒る fighting with 猛烈な/残忍な 願望(する) in his 注目する,もくろむs. "If I didn't want you so bad, I'd smack your ears 支援する! What the hell! I'm as good a man as Duke Tremayne. I'm tired of your superior 空気/公表するs. I (機の)カム to Shanghai just because I heard you were here. Now are you going to be nice, or do I have to get rough?"

"You wouldn't dare!" she exclaimed. "I'll 叫び声をあげる—"

A big 手渡す clapped over her mouth put a stop to that.

"Nobody 干渉するs with anything that goes on in alleys behind 捨てるs like the Bordeaux," he growled, 拘留するing her 武器 and 解除するing her off her feet, kicking and struggling. "Any woman caught here's fair prey."

He kicked open the door through which he had reached the alley, and carried Arline into a 薄暗い hallway. 横断するing this with his writhing 捕虜, he 押すd open a door that opened on it. Arline, 鎮圧するd against his 幅の広い breast, felt the tumultuous 続けざまに猛撃するing of his heart, and experienced a momentary thrill of vanity that she should rouse such 嵐の emotion in Wild 法案 Clanton, whose 偉業/利用するs with the women of a hundred ports were as 広範囲にわたって celebrated as his myriad 血まみれの 戦う/戦いs with men.

He entered a 明らかにする, cobwebby room, and 始める,決める her on her feet, placing his 支援する against the door.

"Let me out of here, you beast!" She kicked his 向こうずねs vigorously.

He ignored her attack.

"Why don't you be nice?" he begged. "I don't want to be rough with you. Honest, kid, I'd be good to you—better than Tremayne probably is—"

For answer she bent her blonde 長,率いる and bit his wrist viciously, even though discretion 警告するd her it was probably the worst thing she could do.

"You little devil!" he swore, grabbing her. "That settles it!"

Scornful of her 抵抗 he 鎮圧するd her writhing 人物/姿/数字 against his chest, and kissed her red lips, her furious 注目する,もくろむs, her 炎上ing cheeks and white throat, until she lay panting and breathless, unable to repel the possessive 武器 that drew her closer and closer.

She squirmed and moaned with mingled emotions as he sank his 長,率いる, 熱望して as a thirsty man bending to drink, and 圧力(をかける)d his 燃やすing lips to the tender hollow of her throat. One 手渡す wandered lower, to her waist, locked her against him にもかかわらず her struggles.

In a sort of daze she 設立する herself on the dingy cot, with her skirt bunched about her hips. The gleam of her own white flesh, so generously exposed, brought her to her senses, out of the maze of 降伏する into which his strength was 軍隊ing her. Her agile mind worked 速く. As she sank 支援する, suddenly she shrieked convulsively.

"My 支援する! Something's stabbed me! A knife in the mattress—"

"What the hell?" He snatched her up 即時に and whirled her about, but she had her 手渡すs 圧力(をかける)d over the small of her 支援する, and was writhing and moaning in 井戸/弁護士席-ふりをするd 苦痛.

"I'm sorry, kid—" he began 涙/ほころびing the mattress to pieces, trying to find what had 傷つける her, and as he turned his 支援する, she snatched a 激しい 投手 from the wash-stand and 粉砕するd it over his 長,率いる.

Not even Wild 法案 Clanton could stand up under a clout like that. He went 負かす/撃墜する like a 政治家-axed ox—or bull, rather—and she darted through the door and 負かす/撃墜する the hall. Behind her she heard a furious roar that lent wings to her small high heels. She sprang into the alley and ran up it, not stopping to arrange her 衣料品s.

As she 現れるd into the street, a backward ちらりと見ること showed her Clanton reeling out into the alley, streaming 血, a 激怒(する)ing and formidable 人物/姿/数字. But she was on a 半分-respectable street, with people strolling past and Sikh policemen within call. He wouldn't dare come out of the alley after her. She walked sedately away, arranging her dress as she went. A few loungers had seen her run from the alley, but they 単に smiled in 静かな amusement and made no comment. It was no novelty in that 4半期/4分の1 to see a girl run from a 支援する alley with her breasts exposed and her skirt pulled awry.

But a few deft touches smoothed out her 外見, and a moment later, looking 冷静な/正味の, unruffled and demure as though she had just stepped out of a beauty shop, she was 長,率いるd for her apartment, where waited the 衣料品s she must don for her dangerous masquerade.

An hour later she entered the famous antique shop of Woon Yuen, which rose in the 中央 of a squalid native 4半期/4分の1 like a cluster of jewels in a litter of garbage. Outside it was unpretentious, but inside, even in the main 議会 with its 陳列する,発揮する ーするつもりであるd to catch the fancy of tourists and casual collectors, the shop was a colorful 暴動 of rich artistry.

A treasure trove in jade, gold, and ivory was 率直に 展示(する)d, 明らかに unguarded. But the inhabitants of the 4半期/4分の1 were not fooled by 外見s. Not one would dare to try to 略奪する Woon Yuen. Arline fought 負かす/撃墜する a 冷気/寒がらせる of 恐れる.

A cat-footed Chinese 屈服するd before her, 手渡すs 隠すd in his wide silken sleeves. She 注目する,もくろむd him with the languid 無関心/冷淡 of an aristocrat, and said, with an accent any Briton would have sworn she was born with: "Tell Woon Yuen that Lady Elizabeth Willoughby wishes to see the ivory Bon." The slant 注目する,もくろむs of the impassive Chinese 広げるd just a trifle at the 指名する. With an even lower 屈服する, he took the fragment of jade with the Chinese characters, and kowtowed her into an ebony 議長,司会を務める with dragon-claw feet, before he disappeared through the 倍のs of a 広大な/多数の/重要な dark velvet tapestry which curtained the 支援する of the shop.

She sat there, ちらりと見ることing indifferently about her, によれば her 役割. Lady Elizabeth would not be 推定する/予想するd to show any 利益/興味 in the trifles 陳列する,発揮するd for the general public. She believed she was 存在 秘かに調査するd on through some peephole. Woon Yuen was a mysterious 人物/姿/数字, 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うd of strange activities, but so far untouchable, either by his many enemies or by the 当局. When he (機の)カム, it was so silently that he was standing before her before she was aware of his 入り口. She ちらりと見ることd at him, masking her curiosity with the bored 空気/公表する of an English noblewoman.

Woon Yuen was a big man, for a Chinese, squattily built, yet above medium 高さ. His square, lemon-色合いd 直面する was adorned with a thin wisp of drooping mustachios, and his bull-like shoulders seemed ready to 分裂(する) the seams of the embroidered 黒人/ボイコット silk 式服 he wore. He had come to Shanghai from the North, and there was more Mongol than Chinese in him, as 強調するd by his 大規模な forearms, impressive even beneath his wide sleeves. He 屈服するd, politely but not obsequiously. He seemed impressed, but not awed by the presence of the 公式文書,認めるd collector in his shop.

"Lady Elizabeth Willoughby does my humble 設立 much 栄誉(を受ける)," said he, in perfect English, 広範囲にわたる his 注目する,もくろむs over her without any 試みる/企てる to 隠す his 熱心な 利益/興味 in her 熟した curves. There was a natural arrogance about him, an 保証/確信 of 力/強力にする. He had dealt with 豊富な white women before, and strange tales were whispered of his 取引 with some of them. The 空気/公表する of mystery and 力/強力にする about him made him seem a romantic 人物/姿/数字 to some European women.

"The Bon is in the inner 議会," he said. "There, too, are my real treasures. These," he gestured contemptuously about him, "are only a show for tourists'. If milady would 栄誉(を受ける) me—"

She rose and moved across the room, with the 保証するd 耐えるing of a woman of 質, 確かな of deference at all time. He drew 支援する a satin curtain on which gilt dragons writhed, and に引き続いて her through, drew it together behind them. They went along a 狭くする 回廊(地帯), where the 塀で囲むs were hung with 黒人/ボイコット velvet and the 床に打ち倒す was carpeted with 厚い Bokhara rugs in which her feet sank 深い.

A soft golden glow emanated from bronze lanterns, 一時停止するd from the gilt-inlaid 天井. She felt her pulse quicken. She was on her way to the famous, yet mysterious, inner 議会 of Woon Yuen, inaccessible to all but 豊富な and beautiful women, and in which, 噂する whispered, Woon Yuen had struck strange 取引s. He did not always sell his antiques for money, and there were feminine collectors who would 物々交換する their virtue for a coveted 遺物.

Woon Yuen opened a bronze door, worked in gold and ebon inlay, and Arline entered a 幅の広い 議会, over a silvery plate of glass 始める,決める in the threshold. She saw Woon Yuen ちらりと見ること 負かす/撃墜する as she walked over it, and knew he was getting an eyeful. That mirror placed where a woman must walk over it to enter the 議会 was a typical Chinese trick to 許す the master of the 設立 to get a more intimate glimpse of the charms of his fair 顧客s, as 反映するd in the mirror. She didn't care, but was 単に amused at his ingenuity. Even Woon Yuen would hardly dare to make a pass at Lady Elizabeth Willoughby.

He の近くにd the door and 屈服するd her to an ornate mahogany 議長,司会を務める.

"Please excuse me for a moment, milady. I will return 即時に."

He went out by another door, and she looked about her at a 陳列する,発揮する whose richness might have shamed a shah's treasure-house. Here indeed were the real treasures of Woon Yuen—what looked like the plunder of a thousand 暴君s' palaces and heathen 寺s. Idols in jade, gold, and ivory grinned at her, and a いっそう少なく sophisticated woman would have blushed at some of the 人物/姿/数字s, 描写するing Oriental gods and goddesses in amorous 提起する/ポーズをとるs of an astonishing variety. She could imagine the 影響 these things would have on some of his feminine 訪問者s.

Even her 注目する,もくろむs dilated a trifle at the sight of the smirking, マリファナ-bellied monstrosity that was the ivory Bon, 略奪するd from God only knew what nameless 修道院 high in the forbidden Himalayas. Then every 神経 tingled as she saw a gold-worked dragon 長,率いる jutting from the 塀で囲む beyond the 人物/姿/数字. Quickly she turned her gaze 支援する to the god, just as her host returned on silent, velvet-shod feet.

He smiled to see her 星/主役にするing at the idol and the 女性(の) 人物/姿/数字 in its 武器.

"That is only one of the conceptions of the god—the Tibetan. It is 価値(がある), to any collector—but let us 延期する 商売/仕事 talk until after tea. If you will 栄誉(を受ける) me—"

With his guest seated at a small ebon (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する, the Mongol struck a bronze gong, and tea was served by a わずかな/ほっそりした, silent-footed Chinese girl, 覆う? only in a filmy jacket which (機の)カム a little below her budding hips, and which 隠すd 非,不,無 of her smooth-skinned, lemon-色合いd charms.

This 陳列する,発揮する, Arline knew, was in (許可,名誉などを)与える with the peculiar Chinese belief that a woman is put in a 適切に receptive mood for amorous 前進するs by the sight of another woman's exposed charms. She wondered, if, after all, Woon Yuen had designs—but he showed no 調印するs of it.

The slave girl 屈服するd herself 謙虚に out with a last salaam that 陳列する,発揮するd her 十分な breasts beneath the low-necked jacket, and Arline's 神経s 強化するd. Now was the time. She interrupted Woon Yuen's polite trivialities.

"That little jade 人物/姿/数字, over there on the ivory shelf," she said, pointing. "Isn't that a piece of Jum Shan's work?"

"I will get it!"

As he rose and stepped to the shelf, she dropped the knock-out pellet into his tea-cup. It 解散させるd 即時に, without discoloring the liquid. She was idly sipping her own tea when the Mongol returned and placed the tiny 人物/姿/数字 of a jade 軍人 before her.

"本物の Jum Shan," said he. "It dates from the tenth century!" He 解除するd his cup and emptied it at a draught, while she watched him with a tenseness which she could not wholly 隠す. He sat the cup 負かす/撃墜する empty, frowning わずかに and twitching his lips at the taste.

"I would like to call your attention, milady—" he leaned 今後, reaching toward the jade 人物/姿/数字—then 低迷d 負かす/撃墜する across the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する, out 冷淡な. In an instant she was across the room, and her white, 次第に減少するing fingers were at work on the teeth of the carved dragon's 長,率いる. There was an instinct in those fingers, a 最高の-sensitiveness such as 技術d cracksmen いつかs have.

In a few moments the jaws gaped suddenly, 明らかにする/漏らすing a velvet-lined nest in the 中央 of which, like an egg of some fabled bird of 楽園, 燃やすd and smoldered a 広大な/多数の/重要な, smooth, 一連の会議、交渉/完成する jewel.

She caught her breath as awedly she cupped it in her 手渡すs. It was a ruby, of such 深い crimson that it looked darkly purple, the hue of old ワイン, and the 血 that flows 近づく the heart. It looked like the materialization of a purple nightmare. She could believe now the wild tales she had heard—that Woon Yuen worshiped it as a god, sucking madness from its 悪意のある depths, that he 成し遂げるd terrible sacrifices to it—

"Lovely, is it not?"

The low 発言する/表明する 割れ目d the 緊張した stillness like the heart-stopping 爆破 of an 爆発. She whirled, gasping, then stood transfixed. Woon Yuen stood before her, smiling 危険に, his 注目する,もくろむs slits of 黒人/ボイコット 解雇する/砲火/射撃. A frantic ちらりと見ること sped to the tea-(米)棚上げする/(英)提議する. There still sprawled a limp, bulky 人物/姿/数字, idential to Woon Yuen in every 詳細(に述べる).

"What—?" she gasped weakly.

"My 影をつくる/尾行する," he smiled. "I must be 用心深い. Long ago I 攻撃する,衝突する upon the expedient of having a servant made up to 似ている me, to fool my enemies. When I left the 議会 a little while ago, he took my place, and I watched through the peep-穴を開ける. I supposed you were after the Heart."

"How did you guess?" She sensed the uselessness of 否定.

"Why not? Has not every どろぼう in 中国 tried to steal it?" He spoke softly, but his 注目する,もくろむs shone reddishly, and the veins swelled on his neck. "As soon as I learned you were not what you pretended, I knew you had come to steal something. Why not the ruby? I 始める,決める my 罠(にかける) and let you walk into it. But I must congratulate you on your cleverness. Not one in a thousand could have discovered the way to open the dragon's jaws."

"How did you know I wasn't Lady Elizabeth?" she whispered, 乾燥した,日照りの-lipped; the 広大な/多数の/重要な ruby seemed to 燃やす her palms.

"I knew it when you walked across the mirror and I saw your lower extremities 反映するd there, I have never seen Lady Elizabeth, but all 売買業者s in jade know her peculiarities by 評判. One of them is such a passion for jade that she always wears jade-green step-ins. Yours are lavender."

"What are you going to do?" she panted, as he moved toward her.

A light akin to madness 燃やすd in his 注目する,もくろむs.

"You have defamed the Heart by your touch! It must drink of all who touch it save me, its high priest! If a man, his 血! If a woman—"

No need for him to 完全にする his abominable 法令. The ruby fell to the 厚い carpet, rolled along it like a 回転するing, demoniac eyeball. She sprang 支援する, shrieking, as Woon Yuen, no longer placid, but with his convulsed 直面する a beast's mask, caught her by the wrist. Against his thickly muscled 武器 her struggles were vain. As in a nightmare, she felt herself 解除するd and carried kicking and scratching, through ひどく brocaded drapes into a curtained alcove. Her 注目する,もくろむs swept the room helplessly; she saw the ivory Bon leering at her as through a もや. It seemed to mock her.

The alcove was 塀で囲むd with mirrors. Only Chinese cruelty could have 工夫するd such an 協定, where, whichever way she 新たな展開d her 長,率いる she was 直面するd by the spectacle of her own humiliation, 反映するd from every angle. She was at once actor and 観客 in a beastly 演劇. She could not escape the shameful sight of her own writhings and the eager brutish 手渡すs of Woon Yuen remorselessly subduing her hopeless, desperate struggles.

As she felt the greedy yellow fingers on her cringing flesh, she saw in the mirrors, her quivering white breasts, her dress torn—dishevelled, the scarlet skirt in startling contrast to the white thighs, with only a wisp of silk 保護するing them as they frantically flexed, 新たな展開d and writhed—then with a sucking gasp of breath between his grinding teeth, Woon Yuen tore the filmy underthings to rags on her 団体/死体...

At the tea-(米)棚上げする/(英)提議する the senseless Chinese still sprawled, deaf to the frantic, agonized shrieks that rang again and again through the inner 議会 of Woon Yuen.

An hour later a door opened into a 狭くする alley in the 後部 of Woon Yuen's antique shop, and Arline was thrust 概略で out, her breasts almost 明らかにする, her dress ripped to shreds. She fell sprawling from the 軍隊 of the 押す, and the door was slammed, with a 残虐な laugh. Dazedly she rose, shook 負かす/撃墜する the remains of her skirt, drew her dress together, and tottered 負かす/撃墜する the alley, sobbing hysterically.

Inside the room from which she had just been 排除する/(飛行機などから)緊急脱出するd, Woon Yuen turned to a lean, saturnine individual, whose pigtail was 負傷させる tightly about his 長,率いる, and from whose wide silk girdle jutted the 扱う of a light hatchet.

"Yao Chin, take Yun Kang and follow her. There is always some man behind the scenes, when a woman steals. I let her go because I wished her to lead us to that man, send Yun Kang 支援する to me. On no account kill him yourself. I, and only I, must 料金d the Heart with their vile 血—hers and his."

The hatchetman 屈服するd and left the room, his 直面する showing nothing of his secret belief that Woon Yuen was crazy, not because he believed the Heart drank human 血, but because he, a rich merchant, 主張するd on doing 殺人 which others of his class always left to 雇うd slayers.

In the mouth of a little 新たな展開ing alley that ran out upon a rotting abandoned wharf, Arline paused. Her 直面する was haggard and desperate. She had reached the end of her 追跡する. She had failed, and Tremayne would not 受託する any excuse. Ahead of her she saw only the 黒人/ボイコット muzzles of a 解雇する/砲火/射撃ing squad to which he would 配達する her—but first there would be 拷問, 残忍な 拷問, to wring from her secrets her captors would think she 所有するd. The world 捕まらないで never knows the 十分な story of the 治療 of 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うd 秘かに調査するs.

With a low moan she covered her 注目する,もくろむs with her arm and つまずくd blindly toward the 辛勝する/優位 of the wharf—then a strong arm caught her waist and she looked up into the startled 直面する of Wild 法案 Clanton.

"What the hell are you fixin' to do?"

"Let go!" she whimpered. "It's my life! I can end it if I want to!"

"Not with me around," he grunted, 選ぶing her up and carrying her 支援する away from the wharf-lip. He sat 負かす/撃墜する on a pile and took her on his (競技場の)トラック一周, like a child. "Good thing I 設立する you," he grunted. "I had a hell of a time tracin' you after you slugged me and ran up that alley, but I finally saw you duckin' 負かす/撃墜する this one. You 選ぶ the damndest places to stroll in. Now you tell me what the trouble is. A classy dame like you don't need to go jumpin' off of ドッキングする/減らす/ドックに入れるs."

He seemed to 持つ/拘留する no grudge for that clout with the 投手. There was possessiveness in the clasp of his 武器 about her supple 団体/死体, but she 設立する a 慰安ing solidity in the breast muscles against which her flaxen 長,率いる 残り/休憩(する)d. There was a 約束 of 安全 in his masculine strength. Suddenly she no longer resented his 執拗な 追跡 of her. She needed his strength—needed a man who would fight for her.

In a few words she told him everything—the 持つ/拘留する Tremayne had on her, the 仕事 he had 始める,決める for her, and what had happened in Woon Yuen's inner room.

He swore at the narrative.

"I'll get that yellow-belly for that! But first we'll go to the Alley of ネズミs. Try to 立ち往生させる Tremayne along to give you another chance. In the 合間 I'll work on a Eurasian wench I know who could tell me plenty about him—and she will, too, or I'll 肌 her alive. He's been mixed up in plenty of crooked ゆすりs. If we get somethin' hot on him, we can shut his mouth, all 権利. And we'll get somethin', you can bet."

When they entered the Alley of ネズミs, in a half-abandoned 倉庫/問屋 地区 in the native 4半期/4分の1, they did not see two furtive 人物/姿/数字s slinking after them, nor hear the taller whisper: "Yun Kang, go 支援する and tell our master she had led us to a man! I will watch the alley till he comes."

Clanton and Arline turned into a dingy doorway, and went 負かす/撃墜する a 回廊(地帯) that seemed wholly 砂漠d. Groping along it, in the dusk, she 設立する the room she sought and led Clanton into it. She lit a candle stub stuck on a shelf, and turned to Clanton: "He'll be here soon."

"I'll wait in the next room," he said, reluctantly taking his arm from about her waist. "If he gets rough, I'll come in."

Alone in the candle-lighted room she tried to compose herself; her heart was (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域ing a wild tattoo, loud in the stillness. Somewhere ネズミs scampered noisily. Time dragged insufferably. Then quick, light steps sounded in the hall, and Duke Tremayne burst through the door, his 注目する,もくろむs 炎ing with greed. They turned red as he read 敗北・負かす in her 注目する,もくろむs; his 直面する contorted.

"Damn you!" His fingers were like talons as he gripped her shoulders. "You failed!"

"I couldn't help it!" she pleaded. "He knew I was a 偽の. Please don't 傷つける me, Duke. I'll try again—"

"Try again? You little fool! Do you think that Chinese devil will give you another chance?" Tremayne's suavity was gone; he was like a madman. "You failed, after all my planning! All 権利! I'll have a little 利益(をあげる) out of you! Take off that dress—" Already in shreds, the 衣料品 ripped easily in his しっかり掴む, 明らかにするing a white breast which quivered under his gaze.

The inner door swung open. Tremayne wheeled, 製図/抽選 a ピストル, but before he could 解雇する/砲火/射撃, Clanton's 握りこぶし 衝突,墜落d against his jaw and stretched him senseless. Clanton bent and 選ぶd up the gun, then whirled as the hall door opened behind him. He 強化するd as a tranquil 発言する/表明する spoke: "Do not move, my friend!"

He looked into the muzzle of a gun in Woon Yuen's 手渡す.

"So you are the man?" muttered the Mongol. "Good! The Heart drinks—"

He could 解雇する/砲火/射撃 before Clanton could 解除する the ピストル he held. But behind the American Arline laughed suddenly, 突然に.

"It worked, 法案!" she exclaimed. "Our man will get the ruby while we 持つ/拘留する Woon Yuen here! The fool! He hasn't yet guessed that we tricked him to draw him away from his shop after I'd 設立する where he hid the gem."

Woon Yuen's 直面する went ashen. With a choking cry he 解雇する/砲火/射撃d, not at Clanton but at the girl. But his 手渡す was shaking like a leaf. He 行方不明になるd, and like an echo of his 発射 (機の)カム the 割れ目 of Clanton's ピストル. Woon Yuen dropped, 演習d through the 長,率いる.

"Good work, kid!" Clanton cried exultantly. "He fell for it—hard!"

"But they'll hang us for this!" whimpered the girl. "Listen! Someone's running up the hall! They've heard the 発射s!"

Stooping 速く Clanton 倍のd Duke Tremayne's fingers about the butt of the smoking ピストル, and then kicked the man ひどく in the 向こうずねs. Tremayne grunted and showed 調印するs of returning consciousness. Clanton drew Arline into the other room and they watched through the 割れ目 of the door.

The hall door opened and Yao Chin (機の)カム in like a panther, hatchet in 手渡す. His 注目する,もくろむs 炎d at the sight of Woon Yuen on the 床に打ち倒す, Tremayne staggering to his feet, a ピストル in his 手渡す. With one stride the hatchetman reached the reeling blackmailer. There was a flash of steel, an ugly butcher-shop crunch, and Tremayne 低迷d, his skull 分裂(する). Yao Chin 投げ上げる/ボディチェックするd the reeking hatchet to the 床に打ち倒す beside his 犠牲者 and turned away.

"Out of here, quick!" muttered Clanton, shaking Arline who seemed 脅すd with hysteria. "Up the alley—in the other direction."

She 回復するd her 宙に浮く in their groping flight up the darkened alley, as Clanton muttered: "We're in the (疑いを)晴らす now. Tremayne can't talk, with his 長,率いる 分裂(する), and that hatchetman'll tell his pals Tremayne 発射 their boss."

"We'd better get out of town!" They had 現れるd into a 狭くする, lamp-lit street.

"Why? We're 安全な from 疑惑 now." A little tingle of 楽しみ ran through her as Clanton turned into a doorway and spoke to a grinning old Chinaman who 屈服するd them into a small neat room, with curtained windows and a couch.

As the door の近くにd behind the old Chinese, Clanton caught her hungrily to him, finding her red lips, now unresisting. Her 武器 went about his 厚い neck as he 解除するd her bodily from the 床に打ち倒す. Willingly she 産する/生じるd, 答える/応じるd to his eager caresses.

She had only 交流d masters, it was true, but this was different. There was a delicious sense of 慰安 and 安全 in a strong man who could fight for her and 保護する her. There was 楽しみ in the dominance of his strong 手渡すs. With a blissful sigh she settled herself luxuriously in his powerful 武器.
