The Monster 地雷

by

P.G. M

(This story first appeared in The South Australian 半端物 Fellows' Magazine August, 1845)

Hope 宿泊する
Hayloft Hotel
August 16th, 1945

This day is memorable in the annals of the principality as the centenary of the 購入(する) by a Company of the 広大な/多数の/重要な 巡査 地雷 on the Burra, and will be celebrated by a grand festival.

One hundred years ago a few individuals of 限られた/立憲的な means subscribed together, with much difficulty, the (at that time large) sum of 」20,000. With this they 購入(する)d, of the 地元の 政府 of that period, twenty thousand acres of mineral land; and the 位置/汚点/見つけ出す 直す/買収する,八百長をするd on is that 巨大な tract of country now 占領するd by the seven 広大な/多数の/重要な and 繁栄するing cities--Featherstonhaugh, Stockton-on-Burra, Aston, Buncely, Grahamstown, Bagota, and Snobsgain.

At that time the 地区 was approached with 広大な/多数の/重要な difficulty, the roads over hill and dale 存在 infested with wild dogs (wolves) and natives (ourang-outangs), and almost impassable to other than travellers on horseback, the few wheeled 乗り物s which 存在するd 存在 clumsy conveyances called drays, and drawn by bullocks; for so 広大な/多数の/重要な was the 需要・要求する for, and scarcity of, horses at that time, that bullocks, goats, and even dogs were 雇うd in 製図/抽選 the 価値のある 鉱石 to the port of 出荷/船積み, which was the now inconsiderable port of Adelaide. The splendid harbour of Boston Bay was then either unknown or 扱う/治療するd with a neglect almost 信じられない to those who now know it as the most important 訴える手段/行楽地 for shipping in the known world. Atmospheric 鉄道s and 空中の machines were, it is true, talked of, but the 事柄-of-fact men of the day considered them theoretical, visionary, and impracticable; and when we consider that the 大型船s of the period 占領するd a space of four months in transferring the 鉱石 (for no means for smelting were then 設立するd) to England, then the only market for it, we shall 中止する to wonder that, for a length of time, it was doubtful whether the 計画/陰謀 would 証明する successful or さもなければ.

To those who are 熟知させるd with the 巨大な wealth of the proprietors of this 所有物/資産/財産--the Princes of the 国/地域; to those who look at their palaces, their 城s, and their 郊外住宅s, it is almost Incredible that, so short a time 支援する as one century, their ancestors were at 巨大な trouble to raise the paltry 量 referred to, which each of the one thousand proprietors could now readily 支払う/賃金 ten times over; that, in fact, two 広大な/多数の/重要な 政党s, called the Nobs and Snobs, (supposed to be the same as the Whig and Tory of a still earlier period), 現実に coalesced to 達成する this 反対する, notwithstanding the almost frantic 対立 申し込む/申し出d by two gentlemen of the 指名する of 経営者/支配人, who 明らかに held very 影響力のある positions in the principality, or rather, as it was called at that time, the 植民地.

The City of Adelaide, then, as now, the seat of 政府, 誇るd few of the splendid buildings which now embellish it. The 古代の monument in the 中央 of Light-square was scarcely 完全にするd. A monument 築くd by the 半端物 Fellows, to the memory of a 死んだ brother, was only then in the course of erection.

A few of the oldest Churches and Chapels that are dotted over our 広大な city were certainly in 存在, and one カトリック教徒 Bishop had lately arrived in the place.

No splendid Cathedral, either Protestant or カトリック教徒, 後部d its proud 長,率いる in this our embryo city. The Prince's palace, the palaces of the 大司教s and Bishops, were not thought of. The 広大な/多数の/重要な man of the place, who, from his 前進するd years, was known by the soubriquet of the Grey 知事, resided in a 部分 of the Prince's palace, which those curious in antiquarian 研究s may still find 占領するd as apartments and offices by the Lord Steward's clerks; and one unpretending Chapel, in the 修道院 of St Murphy, is still pointed out by the venerable father O'Recollect as the 核 of that 広大な/多数の/重要な building.

No Colleges 現実に 存在するd, except in the legends of the oldest inhabitants, who spoke (without, however, anything like 信用/信任) of a College which had 存在するd in 空気/公表する (Quere in Eyre?) in earlier days.

The 広大な/多数の/重要な-grandfather of our 現在の beloved Prince was then but an 幼児 in the cradle; and the land was 治める/統治するd by 指名された人s of our 広大な/多数の/重要な 同盟(する), England, with whom friendly relations have been 持続するd from that time to the 現在の; indeed, as our readers must be aware, this ancestor of our beloved Prince was afterwards the renowned Albert Edward the First of England.

記録,記録的な/記録するs have, however, been 手渡すd 負かす/撃墜する of a visit to this clime paid by King John, who died eight hundred years ago; after which a long blank of seven hundred years occurs in the 文書s in the 手渡すs of the Lord Keeper of 記録,記録的な/記録するs.

We are afraid we are 占領するing too much space in the oldest 設立するd 定期刊行物 of the principality, but cannot resist one more circumstance, which is amusing to those who consider the rude 明言する/公表する in which our ancestors carried on their 商業の 手はず/準備. It is a 井戸/弁護士席-記録,記録的な/記録するd fact that the 広大な/多数の/重要な 通貨の medium was a simple paper 文書, 調印するd 主として by one of the Mr 経営者/支配人s before alluded to, which was taken 現在/一般に as cash, the knowledge of electricity 存在 so 限定するd at that time that our 現在の excellent 通貨の system was unthought of, and he who had 提案するd such a 計画/陰謀 would have been looked upon as a madman.

One fact more. It is said that wheat-seed was sown months before it was 得るd, and the fructification was left 完全に to nature. Much 疑問 has arisen in the minds of many 科学の men as to the 可能性 of growing wheat without electricity; and we have the satisfaction of 知らせるing our readers that a 一連の 実験s are now 存在 carried on by Professor Oldenough to ascertain the fact.

But the (犯罪の)一味ing of bells and the 解雇する/砲火/射撃ing of the 広大な/多数の/重要な steam 大砲 at Fort Boston 発表する the fact that the festivities of the day have now 開始するd, and as our 宿泊する takes a 目だつ part in them, I must 辞職する my seat in the electro-phonotypographical 議長,司会を務める to some one more worthy to fill it.

THE END
