INTRODUCTION

The 主要な／長／主犯 反対する of this Work is to 除去する the erroneous and discreditable notions 現在の in England 関心ing this City, in ありふれた with every thing else connected with the 植民地. We shall endeavour to 代表する Sydney as it really is--to 展示（する） its spacious Gas-lit Streets, （人が）群がるd by an active and 栄えるing 全住民--its Public Edifices, and its sumptuous Shops, which boldly （人命などを）奪う，主張する a comparison with those of London itself: and to shew that the Colonists have not been inattentive to 事柄s of higher 輸入する, we shall 陳列する，発揮する to our Readers the beautiful and commodious Buildings raised by piety and 産業 for the use of 宗教. When I 反映する what a warm friend you have ever shewn yourself to this 植民地 and its 会・原則s,--and how generous a Patron of the 罰金 Arts--till Your Excellency's arrival, unnoticed and neglected; I may, without 疑惑 of flattery, 自白する myself proud in 存在 permitted to inscribe to you this Work: the first whose 単独の 反対する has been to delineate Sydney as it really is, and not as some of our friends in England evidently imagine it to be. CHAPTER I.

SITUATION--EXTENT--POPULATION--AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION.

Sydney, the 資本／首都 of New South むちの跡s and Metropolis of Australasia, is 据えるd on the southern shore of Port Jackson, at the distance of seven miles from the 太平洋の Ocean, in lat. 33° 55' S. and long. 151° 25' E. It is built at the 長，率いる of the far-famed "Cove;" and, with Darling Harbour as its general 境界 to the west, 延長するs, in an 無傷の succession of houses, for more than two miles in a southerly direction. As a 海上の city its 場所／位置 is unrivalled, 所有するing at least three miles of water frontage, at any part of which 大型船s of the heaviest 重荷（を負わせる） can 安全に approach the wharves. The stratum on which it stands is 主として sandstone; and, as it enjoys a かなりの elevation, it is remarkably healthy and 乾燥した，日照りの. The 主要な／長／主犯 thoroughfares run north and south, 平行の to Darling Harbour, and are crossed at 権利 angles by shorter streets. This, at first, gives the place an 空気／公表する of unpleasing sameness and 形式順守, to those accustomed to the winding and romantic streets of an 古代の English town; but the 注目する，もくろむ soon becomes reconciled to the change, and you 中止する to 悔いる the absence of what is in so many 尊敬（する）・点s 望ましくない.

Sydney 占領するs a space of more than two thousand acres; but from this must be deducted fifty-six acres, reserved for recreation and 演習, and known as Hyde Park or the Race Course. By the 国勢（人口）調査 taken in 1846, the number of houses in the city was seven thousand one hundred; there are now, at least, two hundred more. But, 独立して of the city itself, the 郊外s have, during the last few years, 刻々と 増加するd {page 6} in size and importance. To the eastward is Wooloomooloo; to the southeast, Paddington and Surry Hills; to the south, Redfern and Chippendale; to the south-west, Camperdown, Newtown, and the Glebe; to the west (across Darling Harbour), Balmain; and, to the north, the 郡区 of St. Leonard's. All these, except the two last, are more or いっそう少なく connected by streets with the parent city; and, in 1846, 含む／封じ込めるd one thousand seven hundred and fifteen houses: they now probably number two thousand.

Sydney is divided into four Parishes--St. Philip's, St. James', St. Andrew's, and St. Lawrence's; and was, in 1842, 会社にする／組み込むd by 行為／法令／行動する of, 会議, and municipally divided into six 区s: viz. The 全住民 of the city, in 1846, was 38,358; and, 追加するing the 普通の／平均（する） 年次の 増加する, taken from the five years previous to that year, must now be 41,712. The 郊外s also, in 1846, returned as 6832, from their very 早い 拡張 may be 安全に 明言する／公表するd at 7500--making a total of 49,212.

The Public 会・原則s are 非常に／多数の and 繁栄するing; but as we 目的 to 述べる them at length, as 適切な時期 申し込む／申し出s in the course of this Work, we shall content ourselves with 簡潔に enumerating them in the 現在の 一時期／支部. There are four Banks of 問題／発行する--the Bank of New South むちの跡s, and the 商業の Bank, both 植民地の; and the Union Bank of Australia, and the Bank of Australasia, Anglo-Australian. Besides these, there are--the 貯金' Bank, the 王室の Bank of Australia, the British 植民地の Bank and 信用 Company, the Scottish Australian 投資 Company, the Bank of Australia, and the 貸付金 Company. We have also an Australian Gas Light Company, an Australian Sugar Company, a Sydney 解雇する／砲火／射撃 保険 Company, and a Sydney 海洋 保険 Company. {page 7} The Literary and 科学の 会・原則s are--the Australian Subscription Library, the Mechanics' School of Arts, the Australian Museum, the Society for the 昇進／宣伝 of the 罰金 Arts, and the Floral and Horticultural Society. In connexion with the last-指名するd 会・原則, it may not be irrelavent to allude to the Botanical Gardens, which are 支配する to the 管理／経営 of the 政府, and are kept up at the public expense. Besides these, there are 非常に／多数の 宿泊するs of 解放する／自由な Masons and 半端物 Fellows, and several 宗教的な, Social, and 利益 Societies.

Education, though not regarded with all the attention it 需要・要求するs, is にもかかわらず not wholly neglected; for we have, in Sydney, a very fair 割合 of 井戸／弁護士席 たびたび（訪れる）d 学院s, although the 大多数 are of a 私的な nature. Those considered as public, are--the Sydney and Australian Colleges (each a School under the 支配（する）／統制する of a 委員会), the Anglican College at Lyndhurst, the St. James' Grammar School, the Archiepiscopal Seminary at St. Mary's, and the Normal 会・原則. Of Schools, of somewhat humbler pretensions, such are known as Parochial, we have--six Anglican, seven Presbyterian, six Roman カトリック教徒, and one Wesleyan: all of these are 補助装置d by 政府. The 独立した・無所属s and Baptists have also their corresponding Schools; but, from conscientious 動機s, 拒絶する／低下する any 援助 from the 明言する／公表する.

CHAPTER II.

EARLY HISTORY--GOVERNMENT HOUSE--GEORGE STREET.

It became necessary, after the 反乱 of those 植民地s now known as the 部隊d 明言する／公表するs, for Britain to send her 罪人／有罪を宣告するs どこかよそで; and the wide, distant, and almost 全く unknown 地域s of Australia, were adjudged most suitable for the 目的. Accordingly, eleven ships, since {page 8} known in 植民地の History as the "First (n)艦隊／(a)素早い," sailed for New Holland on the 15th of May, 1787, under the 命令（する） of Captain Arthur Phillip, and arrived in Botany Bay on the 20th day of January in the に引き続いて year. Finding the 位置／汚点／見つけ出す in many 尊敬（する）・点s unfit for an 幼児 解決／入植地, and but scantily 供給（する）d with water, Captain Phillip 決定するd to 調査する the coast; and proceeded northward, with a few officers and 海洋s, in three open boats. After passing along a rocky and barren line of shore for several miles, they entered Port Jackson, which they supposed to be of no 広大な／多数の／重要な dimensions, it having been 示すd in the chart of Captain Cook as a boat harbour. Their astonishment may be easily imagined when they 設立する its waters 徐々に 拡大する, and the 十分な 割合s of that magnificent harbour (有能な of 含む／封じ込めるing the whole 海軍 of Britain) burst upon their 見解（をとる）. The 場所／位置 of the ーするつもりであるd 解決／入植地 was no longer a 事柄 of 疑問; and, after first 上陸 at Manly Beach (so 指名するd on account of the behaviour of the natives), they 結局 selected a 位置／汚点／見つけ出す on the banks of a small stream of fresh water, 落ちるing into a Cove on the southern 味方する of the estuary. Having returned to Botany Bay with the news of their 発見, the whole (n)艦隊／(a)素早い was soon 錨，総合司会者d in this creek, which, in compliment to the 国務長官, they 指名するd Sydney Cove. On the 26th of January (a 十分な space for the 軍の and 罪人／有罪を宣告するs to 野営する upon having been 以前 （疑いを）晴らすd) they were all landed, 近づく where the Obelisk now stands, and the 国家の 旗 was hoisted. The 後継するing days were, of course, spent in active 雇用; and the 支持を得ようと努めるd, soon to be 取って代わるd by a large and 繁栄するing city, everywhere resounded to the woodman's axe. Some were （疑いを）晴らすing the ground for cultivation, some busily 築くing the テントs and huts, and some engaged in 上陸 the necessary 供給（する）s.

The Canvas House of the 知事 (Captain Phillip), and the テントs of the Officers, were placed on the east of the 戦車／タンク Stream above-について言及するd, with the 旗-staff in 前線 of them; and 近づく them were 工場／植物d the さまざまな {page 9} fruit trees procured for this 目的 at Rio and the Cape. The 海洋s, and the 罪人／有罪を宣告するs under their 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金, were on the west 味方する of the Cove, on a 位置／汚点／見つけ出す which may now be 述べるd as between George-street and Harrington-street, south of the 場所／位置 of the old Gaol; and the hospital for the sick was yet another collection of huts, where the old Custom-house now stands. Such was Sydney in the first year of its 存在, sixty years ago.

To 詳細（に述べる） the hardships and privations of the 創立者s of this 植民地, though a 仕事 not unworthy of an historian, is not 一貫した with our 現在の 意向. But neither the sterility of the 国／地域, the 激しい heat, nor drenching rains, could damp the ardour of Captain Phillip and his friends, though these disadvantages 一時的に 長引いた their success. As an instance of what they had to 競う against, we may 発言／述べる that, for the six months after their 上陸, only four of the Officers had 木造の huts; and, when the 残り／休憩（する） could be 供給するd for, was uncertain. The hard 支持を得ようと努めるd of the gum trees blunted the 道具s of the 罪人／有罪を宣告するs; and the cabbage palm, they had first availed themselves of, was no longer plentiful.

In July, 1788, the first civil 原因（となる） was tried, and the Town planned out, and, in the September に引き続いて, on a 国勢（人口）調査 存在 made, the 全住民 was 設立する to consist of 933 persons, of whom a very large 割合 were males.

Building went on very slowly, partly for want of mechanics and partly for want of lime, which they could only procure by 燃やすing 爆撃するs. For two years the scarcity of 準備／条項s almost 量d to an actual 飢饉, and but for the strict discipline 持続するd and opportune arrivals from England, the most serious consequences might have supervened. In spite of all difficulties, however, a large brick 蓄える／店 was at length built, and the 創立／基礎 of a 政府 House laid with all 予定 形式順守. Though rambling and 不規律な, the latter was not an unpleasing building, and, with さまざまな 新規加入s and 改良s, served as the Viceregal 住居 for nearly forty years. It was 開始するd on the 15th of May, 1788, and {page 10} pulled 負かす／撃墜する on the 完成 of the 現在の splendid mansion, which is much better adapted to the 目的s of its いっそう少なく ambitious 前任者.

政府 House (with a 見解（をとる） of which we 現在の our readers) is an elegant 石／投石する edifice, in the style usually 称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語d Elizabethean or Tudor Gothic. It was designed by E. Blore, Esq., of London, and 築くd under the careful superintendence of Mr. 吊りくさび, the 植民地の Architect. It is about 170 feet long and 40½ feet high, with a large 新規加入 at the northern end 含む／封じ込めるing apartments for the 国内のs. The Halls and 明言する／公表する Rooms are spacious and lofty, and of these the Ball Room alone 対策 150 feet in length and 28 in width, 排除的 of the orchestra. The staircase is formed of 高度に wrought Australian cedar, and the chimney pieces of 植民地の marble. Altogether, it is one of the most 課すing buildings we have; and whether 見解（をとる）d from the 隣接する Domain, the Harbour, or the City, its tall chimnies of elaborately carved 石／投石する, white turrets and 非常に／多数の windows, （判決などを）下す it a 目だつ ornament to our metropolis.

It is 利益／興味ing to contrast such a building as the above with the poor sheds which appear in Collins' Plates as the 核 of Sydney. They were 主として formed of rough boards nailed to a few upright 地位，任命するs, shabbily covered with bark; and are, now, everywhere 取って代わるd by 無傷の lines of 井戸／弁護士席 built houses. In our first engraving of the Streets, we have given an 正確な idea of both 味方するs of George Street, from Mr. Lyons' 市場 to the 入り口 of Jamison Street; and the same, also, of Charlotte Place. In this 範囲 of buildings, the Bank of Australasia, and the Auction 市場 above-について言及するd, are 平等に deserving of notice. The former is a plain but commodious edifice, and consists of two wings and a centre; having fifteen windows and three doorways 直面するing the street. There are six 支店 Banks in Australia in 関係 with this 設立, which is under the 支配（する）／統制する of a Superintendent, 経営者／支配人, and Board of Directors. It was 会社にする／組み込むd by 王室の 借り切る／憲章 in 1835, and 所有するs a 資本／首都 of one million 英貨の／純銀の.

For a long time (as late as 1828) this part of George Street formed the general 境界 line of a large garden, which reached 支援する to the 首脳会議 of the hill;--and on the opposite 味方する, as far 負かす／撃墜する as the 戦車／タンク Stream, was the 板材 Yard, which was not sold in separate allotments until the year 1830. Charlotte Place was 初めは the Parade Ground, and the Guard House stood on the 場所／位置 of the 現在の splendid dwelling-house of Mr. Cleeve.

CHAPTER III.

EARLY HISTORY--ST. PHILIP'S CHURCH--GEORGE STREET.

In the 早期に days of the 植民地, Divine Service was 成し遂げるd in the open 空気／公表する, soon after sun-rise, wherever a shady tree could be 設立する. 広大な／多数の／重要な 不正行為 was the consequence, and notwithstanding the 罰s by which the 出席 of the 囚人s was 施行するd, the congregations appear to have been very thin. Those who obstinately 固執するd in their recusancy were 奪うd of a 部分 of their rations. This 明言する／公表する of 事件／事情／状勢s continued until 1793, when a 一時的な Church was 築くd at the 支援する of the huts on the east 味方する of the Cove, 近づく to what is now the corner of Hunter and Castlereagh Streets. It was built at the expense of the Chaplain--the Rev. Mr. Johnson--of strong 地位，任命するs, wattles, and plaster, and was finished August 25th, 1793,--enjoying an honourable distinction as the first Christian Church in this 部分 of the globe. In 1798 it was burnt 負かす／撃墜する--明らかに by some incendiary, probably one of those who had been compelled to …に出席する, and who thus hoped to escape the infliction for the 未来. Such hopes, however, were vain; for the brick 蓄える／店 above-について言及するd had just been 完全にするd, and was すぐに fitted up {page 12} as a Church. This building, which appears to have been the first house in the 植民地, stood a little behind the 場所／位置 of the 現在の Bank of Australasia. On the 完成 of the 孤児 School (設立するd October 1st, 1800), the fittings were taken thither, and that building continued to be used for the 業績／成果 of Divine Service until the 除去 of 知事 Bligh. One consequence of that event was, an entire 中断 of Public Worship from January, 1808, until August, 1809.

That part of St. Philip's first built was the clock tower, which was of brick, and finished in 1797; this however having fallen in June, 1806, it was rebuilt of 石／投石する in the same year. The Church itself was 開始するd in 1800, but not ready for use until 1809, when the Rev. W. Cowper officiated therein for the first time. It was 完全にするd about a year afterwards, and a handsome Altar Service of silver 現在のd to it by His Majesty King George III. Such is a 簡潔な／要約する 輪郭（を描く） of its history. As a building it is confessedly somewhat unecclesiastical, and singular; but has, にもかかわらず, a sort of 伝統的な （人命などを）奪う，主張する to our 尊敬（する）・点, from its 関係 with so 早期に a period in the annals of the 植民地. For nineteen months previous to the 開始 of St. Philip's Church for Divine Worship, (August, 1809,) there was no 大臣 of the Church of England officiating in the 植民地. Since that date, astonishing 進歩 has been made. Sydney now 持つ／拘留するs the 階級 of 主要都市の City in the sixth 州 of the Anglican Church; having, in 関係 with it as many as five suffragan bishoprics, while the number of clergymen in this diocese alone 量s at the 現在の time to fifty. Connected with this most gratifying church 拡張, is a work just 開始するd, with such energy and zeal as to 確実にする a 迅速な attainment of the end in 見解（をとる）. This is no other than the erection of a new and magnificent Church for the Anglicans of this Parish, of which the 創立／基礎 has been laid at the 支援する of the 現在の edifice, on the 最高の，を越す of the hill.

George Street and 橋（渡しをする） Street, Plate 12A

Our second Descriptive Engraving 代表するs the 延長／続編 of George {page 13} Street northward to Essex 小道／航路 or Gaol Hill. The four first houses in the plate, as far as Mr. Dawson's, stand upon what was 初めは the eastern 限界 of the Parade Ground before noticed; and 近づく the corner of it was the 入り口 and eastern end of the Old 政府 Spirit 蓄える／店, which 延長するd backwards in an oblique direction に向かって St. Philip's Church. Of this 蓄える／店 nothing now remains, its 場所／位置 存在 完全に 占領するd as in the engraving. The houses opposite, from Mr. Gaunson's--以前は the Bank of Australia--to the "先触れ（する） Office," are 一般に known as Underwood's Buildings; having been 築くd by Mr. James Underwood on his 認める of land, which reached from the street in 前線 to the water's 辛勝する／優位. It was here that the first 植民地の ship, 指名するd the King George, was built by that spirited proprietor, and 開始する，打ち上げるd on the 19th of April, 1805. The space 介入するing between the "先触れ（する） Office" and 橋（渡しをする） Street, had 以前 been enclosed as the Garden of the 女性（の） 孤児 School, which stood nearly in the centre of it. This Garden also 前線d that part of 橋（渡しをする） Street, often called the Colonnade, which appears in the lower part of the plate. 橋（渡しをする） Street 含む／封じ込めるs, as may be 観察するd, many respectable buildings, but, from a variety of 次第で変わる／派遣部隊 circumstances, remains as yet in an unfinished 明言する／公表する.

There is nothing in this 即座の 周辺 calling for particular notice, except the Office of the Sydney Morning 先触れ（する）. This newspaper, the "Times" of Australia, is 行為／行うd with much ability, but at the same time with such a careful abstinence from all political and party feeling, that it 一般に pleases all by displeasing 非，不，無. In those articles, however, which touch upon 宗教, it is decidedly, though not violently, Protestant. As a 商業の and daily paper, it 階級s deservedly very high. It was 設立するd in the year 1831, and first （機の）カム out as a daily paper in October, 1840. Its 循環／発行部数 is 3000; and it furnishes constant 雇用 to nearly sixty men.

CHAPTER IV.

AUSTRALIAN LIBRARY--LOWER GEORGE STREET--EARLY HISTORY, ETC.

At the eastern end of Bent Street; which forms a winding 延長／続編 of 橋（渡しをする） Street and Macquarie Place, on an eminence of かなりの elevation, stands the Australian Library. The 会・原則, to which this handsome edifice 借りがあるs its 指名する and 存在, was first 設立するd through the exertions of Thomas De La Condamine, Esquire, 私的な 長官 to 知事 Darling, about one-and-twenty years ago. The projector, communicating the 反対する of his honourable ambition to the Reverend Messrs. Cowper and Hill, すぐに 伸び（る）d their hearty co-操作／手術--which was also most willingly afforded by the merchants of Sydney and other 居住（者）s. The Society began its career under the 公式の／役人 許可／制裁 and patronage of His Excellency the 知事, and has ever since 刻々と 前進するd in 公共事業（料金）／有用性 and importance. The first 会合 was held at the Sydney Hotel, on February 3rd, 1826, when Alexander M'Leay, Esquire, F.R.S., was elected 大統領, and a subscription 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる） made out. By the judicious 手はず／準備 of the 委員会--その上のd, also, by the 自由主義の 寄付s of 知事 Darling and Archdeacon Scott, and a large bequest of 調書をとる／予約するs left by the Will of T. Campbell, Esq.--the Library was opened on the 1st October, 1827, at No. 1 Terry's Buildings, Pitt Street. These 前提s were held conjointly with the Sydney Dispensary, the officer of which served also as a 一時的な Librarian, daily, from 1 to 4 P.M. すぐに afterwards, it was 濃厚にするd by 知事 Darling's 認めるing to its use some 価値のある allotments of land:--first, two 据えるd in Hyde Park, on what now lies between the Sydney College and St. Mary's Cathedral, as a 場所／位置 for the 会・原則; and, secondly, two other pieces of land above {page 15} Rushcutter's Bay, in 援助（する） of the Building 基金. The latter were sold by public auction, in the year 1841, for &続けざまに猛撃する;3384.

The 認める of the allotments in Hyde Park having been cancelled or disallowed by Sir Richard Bourke, a correspondence was entered into with the 政府 on the 支配する, and kept up for several years. It resulted in Sir George Gipps 認めるing the 場所／位置 of the 現在の edifice, of which we 現在の our readers with an 正確な engraving. The first 石／投石する was laid. by the 大統領, A. M'Leay, Esq., on the 14th February, 1843, and it was ready for use in January, 1846. It is built of light-coloured freestone, after the design of Henry Ginn, Esq., and adorned with 非常に／多数の and 井戸／弁護士席 carved pilasters in the 合成物 order of architecture. The Library Room 占領するs the entire of the eastern 味方する 直面するing Macquarie Street, and is lighted by fifteen windows. Its size is 80 feet by 40, and it is thirty-five feet in 高さ. Though as yet incomplete it is a noble apartment, and is to be surrounded by a gallery, reaching out as far as the 中心存在s, when finished. The Reading Room is of much smaller dimensions, and has a south-western 面. The cost of the building, in its 現在の 明言する／公表する, has been about &続けざまに猛撃する;5000.

The Society at 現在の consists of Proprietors, who 支払う／賃金 &続けざまに猛撃する;5 as an 入り口 料金, with an 年次の subscription of &続けざまに猛撃する;2;--and 加入者s, who 支払う／賃金 &続けざまに猛撃する;3 a-year and no 入り口 料金. 名誉として与えられる Members must be introduced by two Proprietors, その結果 they are 認める to the use of Library and Reading Room for a period of three months, but can have no 調書をとる／予約するs 問題／発行するd to them. The admission is by 投票（する）, but its use is not so offensively 排除的 as 一般に imagined. The Library 含む／封じ込めるs 15,000 容積／容量s. About forty 定期刊行物s--and newspapers, both British and 植民地の, are 定期的に received. 調書をとる／予約するs are 問題／発行するd from 11 A.M. till 5 P.M., and the Reading Room is open from 9 in the morning till 9 at night.

Retracing our steps toward George Street we come in sight of the Obelisk, 築くd in 1818 by 知事 Macquarie, as a starting point from {page 16} which distance on the roads of the 植民地 might be calculated. It stands in a small grass 陰謀（を企てる）, in 前線 of Macquarie Place, at the eastern extremity of 橋（渡しをする） Street, but will doubtless be soon swept away by the tide of 改良, which in this as in every other part of the City is beginning to make 広大な／多数の／重要な alterations. Its very 場所／位置 will soon be a 事柄 for conjecture.

Our third descriptive engraving forms a 延長／続編 of the line of George Street northward, from the point where the 先行する plate broke off; viz. from Essex 小道／航路 to the Queen's Wharf. This 部分 of the Town 耐えるs a strong resemblance to part of a 海上の town in England, and 群れているs with an active and busy 全住民, mostly depending for their subsistence upon the shipping. As one of the most 目だつ and 利益／興味ing features of this locality, we must direct attention to Mr. Dawson's Foundry, which is 一般に considered to be the first in the 植民地. It was 設立するd in 1833, by the gentleman whose spirited 産業 and 企業 it is now amply rewarding. As an instance of what can be done in this 植民地, it may be について言及するd that アイロンをかける work, of more than four トンs 負わせる, has been cast here with success. Mr. Dawson has also, for multifarious uses, an excellent high 圧力 steam engine, of eight horse 力／強力にする, which has been in constant use for the last eleven years. It was made on the 前提s, and, it is scarcely necessary to 追加する, is a finished piece of 機械装置. In the 隣接する houses there is, perhaps, a little いっそう少なく 正規の／正選手 uniformity of 面 than is now usual in Sydney, but most of them are of 石／投石する and 大幅に built. The 現在の Shop and Dwelling of Mr. Holmes was 初めは the Office of the "Sydney Gazette," 以前は the 主要な／長／主犯 newspaper in the 植民地, and the first daily paper in this part of the world. It is long since 消滅した／死んだ. Opposite to the Australian Hotel (a very commodious and respectable Inn), stands the House and 海洋 蓄える／店 of Mr. F. Mitchell, and is the oldest 設立 in Sydney of the 肉親，親類d. The Shop has been, built for more than twenty years, but the House, which is the oldest in this part of George Street, was 築くd by a Mr. Redman.

We must now 再開する our 簡潔な／要約する 輪郭（を描く） of the history of Sydney; tracing, as far as possible, its 漸進的な 進歩 from a humble 解決／入植地 to a 栄えるing and populous city. That part of it, we have just 試みる／企てるd to 述べる, was the first built upon; although, for many years, scarcely any thing was to be seen therein at all 似ているing a 正規の／正選手 street. The cottages and huts were but thinly scattered over the hill lying to the north-west of the Cove, the stumps of trees thereon still remaining everywhere 明白な. It 要求するd all the energy of Captain Phillip and his associates to 遂行する even this, so harrassing were the difficulties with which they had to 競う. にもかかわらず, bricks were burnt, 石／投石するs hewn, 木材／素質 削減（する）, and houses built, in spite of 障害s which seemed almost insurmountable. The winter rains, it is true, at first 増加するd the hardship of the 囚人s, but 結局 impelled them to 労働 for the amelioration of their 不快s. Thus the midwinter of '88 設立する them busily 雇うd in 築くing 兵舎 for the 海洋s, building houses for the 知事 and 中尉／大尉／警部補-知事 (Major Ross), shingling the Hospital, and 築くing an 観測所 on the 位置／汚点／見つけ出す now known as Dawes' 殴打／砲列, at the north-western extremity of the Cove. This last building was soon 設立する insufficient for its 即座の 反対する; and 存在 also far too small for the accommodation of the family of 中尉／大尉／警部補 Dawes, the 居住（者） 天文学者, the 石／投石する-切断機，沿岸警備艇s and masons 始める，決める about 築くing another forthwith, nearly in the same 位置／汚点／見つけ出す. The building, however, ーするつもりであるd as 兵舎 for the 兵士s, 証明するd far too large for the 排除的 占領／職業 of the 軍の, and was accordingly 部分的に／不公平に used as a 蓄える／店. 広大な／多数の／重要な inconvenience was felt from the want of men, of practical knowledge, both in 農業 and building; the 大多数 of the 全住民, both 社債 and 解放する／自由な, 存在 全く 未使用の to any thing of the 肉親，親類d.

In October, 1789, was 開始する，打ち上げるd the first boat built in the 植民地. It was ーするつもりであるd for the conveyance of 蓄える／店s to the 農業の 解決／入植地 {page 18} of "Rose Hill, now known by the aboriginal 指名する of Parramatta. It was a large unweildy 事件／事情／状勢, and is 述べるd as any thing but a chef d'oeuvre in 海軍の architecture. The 罪人／有罪を宣告するs ironically 称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語d it the Rose Hill Packet; until finding, by sad experience, how difficult it was to move it at all, they gave it the 重要な 愛称 of the "Lump." A Magazine was subsequently 築くd 近づく the 観測所 above-について言及するd, and in December the 裁判官-支持する's house was built. At the same time, also, the roadways in the 解決／入植地 were made somewhat more passable, and the first Guard-house built--east of the Cove, not far from the 橋（渡しをする）. A Signal-staff was 始める，決める up at the South 長，率いる in the beginning of 1790, by which 知能 of the approach of any 大型船 could be すぐに communicated to those in Sydney.

In consequence of an 全世界の／万国共通の 失敗 of the 刈るs, and no arrivals from England, so 広大な／多数の／重要な a scarcity 勝つ／広く一帯に広がるd that every man was put upon short allowance; and it was even customary, for those officers and gentlemen who went to dine at 政府 House, to carry with them their daily ration of bread. In April, 1790, the scarcity 増加するing, the 知事 gave noble instance of self-否定, by placing three hundred 続けざまに猛撃するs of flour, his 私的な 所有物／資産／財産, in the ありふれた 在庫／株; 同意ing to receive only the rations of a simple 兵士 in the 階級s:--a rare example of magnanimity, which only those, who have felt what hunger is, can duly 高く評価する／（相場などが）上がる. It cannot be a 事柄 of surprise for us to learn, that sickness, the usual attendant upon 飢饉, made 広大な／多数の／重要な 荒廃させるs amongst the 兵士s and 囚人s. Day after day these unhappy 犠牲者s of want and 病気 were borne to their 墓／厳粛／彫る／重大なs, in what we now call the Old Burial Ground, then nearly a mile from the 解決／入植地. And when the portable Hospital, brought out from London, was put up in July, nearly five hundred persons were すぐに placed under 医療の 治療, of whom 広大な／多数の／重要な numbers died. During this year (1790) a fresh Storehouse was finished; and, in December, a 上陸-place formed 近づく the 場所／位置 of the 現在の Custom House. {page 19} But, little could be done, because it was impossible to 強要する those to work who were in actual want of food.

CHAPTER V.

ST. PATRICK'S CHURCH, GUILD, ETC.--GEORGE STREET, HUNTER STREET.

In Charlotte Place, not far from its Anglican sister, stands the Roman カトリック教徒 Church of St. Patrick--a 罰金 Gothic structure, in the Decorate style. It is 大幅に built of 井戸／弁護士席 dressed 石／投石する, and consists of a nave and chancel, with sixteen 味方する-windows; and another of three lights, over the porch and main door way, 直面するing the street. There is, besides, an oriel at the 支援する of the altar, which, contrary to usual custom, looks toward the north. The 主要な／長／主犯 gables are surmounted by floriated crosses; and, at the southern end are two spiral turrets, topped with 井戸／弁護士席 carved finials. Below these, and, beside the main 入り口, are two other doors for the aisles, and another in the chancel for the priest. The windows are all filled with mouldings of 広大な／多数の／重要な elegance and beauty, and most of them richly adorned with painted glass. The corbeils, of fanciful design, are in good keeping with the 残り／休憩（する） of the building; which, にもかかわらず of some disadvantages 出来事/事件 to its 状況／情勢, is one of 広大な／多数の／重要な architectural 長所, and 井戸／弁護士席 worthy of the communion to which it belongs. It was built by subscription; 補助装置d, however, by the 認める of &続けざまに猛撃する;1000 from the 植民地の 政府. Its extreme length, 含むing the chancel, is 126 feet, and its breadth 37; but, at the altar 休会, it is not more than 30 feet wide. The first 石／投石する was laid on the 25th of August, 1840, by His Grace the Most Reverend the 大司教; and was, by the same Prelate, 献身的な on the 18th of March, 1844. In the 内部の, as yet not やめる {page 20} 完全にするd, there is a large gallery. The fittings are of cedar; and it will 含む／封じ込める about 700 persons.

Underneath the Church is a large 丸天井d apartment, lighted by several windows at the 味方する, below the level of the street. It serves as the 長，率いる ４半期/4分の1s and Convocation Room of three Societies, whose special 反対するs are 宗教的な and social 改良 amongst members of the Roman カトリック教徒 約束. Of these, the first that （人命などを）奪う，主張するs our attention and approbation is the Guild of Saint Mary and Saint Joseph--an 会・原則 which, in its peculiar sphere of usefulness, stands alone. We say this, of course, without 直接／まっすぐに recognising the expediency of all its minor 詳細（に述べる）s; we speak only of its general 公共事業（料金）／有用性, and may thus be permitted to 悔いる its 孤立するd position. It is a Christian 協会 or Fellowship, deriving its 存在 from ecclesiastical 当局, in which each member 特に 貯蔵所d himself to the 業績／成果 of 確かな 宗教的な 義務s 定める／命ずるd by his Church. たびたび（訪れる） communion, 祈り and almsgiving, are the most 目だつ of these spiritual 義務s, and the manner of their 業績／成果 is distinctly 表明するd and enjoined. Thus it carries the 影響（力） of 宗教 into all the ordinary 処理／取引s of life; making 準備／条項 for the time of sickness, old age, and death, and 遂行するing its useful and benevolent 目的s with promptness and efficacy. To 影響 this there are three separate 基金s:--One, for 供給するing for 週刊誌 支払い（額）s to members during sickness; another, for a 永久の 年次の allowance to members after the 65th year of their age; and a third, for a sum to be paid to the 未亡人 or children on the death of a member. The 長，指導者 officers are a Chaplain, Warden, Bursar, 長官, and 会議 or 委員会. Its 支配するs and 財政上の 手はず／準備 evince a carefulness and judgment beyond all 賞賛する. The members wear a peculiar dress on 公式の／役人 occasions, and are thus いつかs met with in our streets, …を伴ってing some 出発／死d brother to his long, last home. We do not envy that man his feelings, who has beheld the sight unmoved. The {page 21} Guild of St. Mary and St. Joseph was 設立するd on the 8th of June, 1845, and now numbers 250 members. It may not be uninteresting to the general reader to be 知らせるd that it has been honoured by the 表明する approbation of ローマ法王 Pius IX, who, through the 大司教, lately 現在のd to its Warden a large gold medallion of himself, and a curious chain of the same metal.

George Street and Hunter Street, Plate 20A

Verum haec ipse equidem spatiis exclusus iniquis
Praetereo, atque aliis 地位，任命する me 覚え書き relinquo.

In connexion with the same edifice, and of 事前の date, is a Total Abstinence Society, which has 上向きs of thirteen thousand members on its 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる）s. This 会・原則, though 設立するd by the Roman カトリック教徒 Clergy, for the good of their flocks, is not of a sectarian character, but open to every community; and has 大いに checked the demoralising and 残虐な 罪，犯罪 of drunkenness, which, before its 設立, was dreadfully 流布している. Its officers are, a 大統領, Treasurer, and 長官, who are 補助装置d by a 委員会 of twenty-one persons. The third 会・原則, whose officers 組み立てる／集結する here, is a 利益 Society, at 現在の numbering 140 members, and of which the Reverend John Sumner, the 現職の, is 大統領. It was 設立するd on the 4th of April, 1842.

Our Fourth Descriptive Engraving 代表するs, first, the 延長／続編 of George-street toward the South, from Jamieson Street to Hunter Street; and secondly, Hunter Street itself. This locality has long been built upon; and a corresponding line of road may be traced in some of the oldest charts of Sydney. It 含む／封じ込めるs, however, little deserving notice, except perhaps the quondam Bank of Australia, an 設立 which was first 設立するd in 1826, recognised in 1833, and の近くにd as a Bank in February 1843. Hunter Street, delineated in the latter part of the plate, is pleasantly 据えるd on a gentle ascent, 会合 George Street at 権利 angles. It 含む／封じ込めるs many excellent shops, and that part of it called Regent's Terrace is no 不名誉 to its 指名する. These and all the other {page 22} houses on the southern 味方する of the street have been 築くd within the last eight years. Behind Mr. Solomon's 蓄える／店s is the 場所／位置 of the Pavilion Theatre, the ephemeral 存在 of which is now 井戸／弁護士席 nigh forgotten.

CHAPTER VI.

GEORGE STREET--PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS--POST OFFICE.

That part of George Street 直面するing the eastern 塀で囲む of the Barrack Square 構成するs some of the best built houses in Sydney. Our fifth Descriptive Engraving 代表するs this 部分 of the City, which forms the 延長／続編 of George Street, southerly, from Hunter Street to the 地位，任命する Office. It is 主として 占領するd by 豊富な tradesmen, whose 蓄える／店s and shops are fully equal to those of a 主要な／長／主犯 street in an English city. More than this we cannot say; where so much spirited 企業 and 改良 is 明白な, it would be invidious to 賞賛する a few. In this ４半期/4分の1 land has of late years sold for a very high price, and often 設立する ready purchasers at &続けざまに猛撃する;20 per foot. Yet, within the memory of man it had scarcely a 名目上の value; we are even 保証するd that the 場所／位置 of several houses 近づく the Bank of New South むちの跡s was 交流d for a 瓶／封じ込める of rum within the last thirty years! So 速く has our metropolis 前進するd in spite of every discouragement and difficulty.

George Street, Plate 22A

訴訟／進行 along George Street in a southerly direction, and passing Hunter Street, which abuts on it on our left, we have on the opposite 味方する for some hundred yards a blank 塀で囲む, at 現在の enclosing the Barrack Square. The 広範囲にわたる ４半期/4分の1s 供給するd for the 軍の in the 早期に 形式 of the 植民地, at that time bounded the town, and, by their 周辺 and 命令（する）ing position, afforded the 保護 called for by the peculiar {page 23} nature of its 全住民: having, however, been 徐々に surrounded by buildings till they 占領するd the centre of the city, the 価値のある 地元の could ill be spared from the space 要求するd for the 増加するing 全住民, and it was 設立する necessary to make 準備／条項 for the accommodation of the 軍隊／機動隊s in the 郊外s of the town. Commodious buildings having been 築くd at Darlinghurst, the 長，率いる ４半期/4分の1s have been 除去するd thither; and we 信用 soon to see the straggling and dilapidated erections of the 原始の 植民地 取って代わるd by elegant and useful edifices adapted to civil 目的s, and the 場所／位置 pierced by the thoroughfares so much 要求するd for the 広まる 現在の of 商業の activity Returning to the corner of Hunter Street we find upon our left 手渡す, or upon the eastern 味方する of George Street, a 封鎖する of buildings with some architectural pretensions, 大幅に 建設するd of brick with 石／投石する dressings--the angle 占領するd by Mr. Skinner's commodious Tavern. まっただ中に a 列／漕ぐ／騒動 of elegant and 井戸／弁護士席-蓄える／店d shops is the office of the Australian General 保険 Company, and at a short distance the 大規模な and old-fashioned 石／投石する house 占領するd by the Bank of New South むちの跡s--the oldest 会・原則 of that description in the 植民地, and a 厳密に 植民地の 請け負うing, 設立するd in 1817, with a 資本／首都 of &続けざまに猛撃する;400,000. We must not leave unnoticed the office of the Atlas, 週刊誌 定期刊行物;--初めは 事業／計画（する）d with a 見解（をとる） of 支持するing the pastoral 利益／興味s of the 植民地, and at one time powerfully supported by 非常に／多数の and able contributors. The 編集（者）の department has undergone 非常に／多数の changes, but has always been remarkable for the warmth of style which it has 雇うd in giving 表現 to its 見解（をとる）s. The typographical 部分, under the able 管理／経営 of Mr. Welch, the proprietor, has all through been remarkable for its excellence.

A short distance その上の southward are the offices where the 商売／仕事 of the now 消滅した／死んだ "Church of England Lay 協会" was 行為／行うd. It is needless, however, to enter into 詳細（に述べる） upon the 反対するs of an 会・原則 no longer in 存在. In the same building remains the "Sydney Choral Society," {page 24} 設立するd in March, 1845, with a 見解（をとる） to 改善する the 明言する／公表する of choral music in the city, to 供給する volunteer choirs for the parish churches, and to encourage the practice of music in general. To these 反対するs it has already 大部分は 与える／捧げるd, and 約束s to diffuse an 広範囲にわたる and cultivated taste for sacred music. At the same office is transacted the 商売／仕事 of the "Church of England 共同墓地 Company," formed in consequence of some 反対s raised to the consecration of any part of the General 共同墓地 供給するd by the 行為／法令／行動する of the 立法機関 in the 開会／開廷／会期 of 1847; 確かな 条項s of which were, by the high church party considered objectionable. Here is also the "Australian 利益 投資 and Building Society," yet in its 幼少／幼藍期, but having for its 反対する the introduction of a 原則 which has been 設立する to work beneficially in England.

We now arrive before one of the most important buildings of the 植民地, not 単に as regards the structure, but as 存在 the centre and 焦点（を合わせる）, the heart, as it may be 称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語d, from which the pulse of civilization throbs to the remotest extremity of the land. We mean the 地位，任命する Office. The 事業／計画（する）d 改良s, 開始するd last year, in which is 熟視する／熟考するd the re-edification of the whole building on a 規模 相応した with the growing wants of the community, have not yet 進歩d beyond the erection of a handsome portico. Six Doric columns support an appropriate entablature and pediment, with the 王室の 武器 (遂行する／発効させるd by Mr. Abraham, an able sculptor 居住（者） in the 植民地,) in the centre of the tympanum. The whole 影響 is chaste and 厳しい, and much more befitting the 面 of a place of 商売／仕事 than a more ornamental and gaudy design would be. When the 兵舎 are 除去するd the portico will afford a noble termination to the street which will be opened forming a vista in the 前線 of the building. The …を伴ってing engraving, however, will enable our readers to form a better idea of it than a 言葉の description can by any 可能性 伝える.

In the earlier days of the 植民地, the 植民／開拓者s were やむを得ず left 扶養家族 upon chance 適切な時期s of conveyance, for the 交換 of the scanty correspondence which 十分であるd for the 原始の nature of their 商業の 処理／取引s--direct 物々交換する 存在, for many years, almost the only 方式 of 貿易（する）. It was not therefore until 1828, forty years after the first 形式 of the 植民地, that its growing wants 要求するd the 援助（する） of a 地位，任命する Office, which, from the modest extent 初めは given to it, has 拡大するd into the important and daily 増加するing 設立, over which Mr. James Raymond so ably 統括するs as Postmaster General. At the 手始め, daily Mails were despatched only to Parramatta and Liverpool; twice a-week to Windsor, Campbelltown, and Penrith; once a-week to Bathurst; while one 独房監禁 sailing 大型船 formed the medium of communication between Sydney and Newcastle, which now affords 十分な 占領／職業 for so many splendid Steamers. The entire distance 毎年 横断するd by the Mails 量d to 40,500 miles, 排除的 of the water carriage. Since that period the number of the 地位，任命する Offices has been augmented from 8 to 102; the distance travelled over to nearly 600,000 miles, besides water carriage. The communication now comprehends a Mail twice a-week to Melbourne, a distance of nearly 600 miles; once a-week to Adelaide, almost 二塁打 the distance; while, to the northward, it reaches Moreton Bay, and in a westerly direction 延長するs beyond Wellington, 構成するing a 旅行 of 上向きs of 260 miles に向かって the 内部の of this 広大な island-continent.

Continuing our walk southward, we pass the handsome Offices of the 商業の Banking Company, lately reorganised; a new Company having been formed, with a 資本／首都 of &続けざまに猛撃する;120,000 in 4,800 株, upon the winding up of the old Company, in consequence of the effluxion of the time of the 共同 licensed by the 初めの 行為 of 解決／入植地.

We now arrive at the corner of King Street, which, running from east to west, from the 政府 Domain to the shores of Darling {page 26} Harbour, 完全に intersects the City. Having reached the centre of the town, let us pause for a moment and look around us. Few strangers, we imagine, could do so on their first arrival in the metropolis of New South むちの跡s, without the most lively emotions of surprise. In place of a paltry town, which many of them are led to 推定する／予想する, they find shops and 倉庫／問屋s which would do credit to an European 資本／首都, 申し込む／申し出ing for their convenience every article of 慰安 and 高級な; while, in every direction, are to be seen 明白な 指示，表示する物s of 進歩 and 改良. 'The handsome equipages that dash past, the elegantly 覆う？ 女性（の）s, and the stylish groups of gentlemen, point out the seat of amusement and gaiety. The ひどく laden wains--the （人が）群がるs that sweep past, in every direction--the 迅速な step of some, the thoughtful brow of others, betokening the 目的 of 激しい 占領／職業--all speak of 広範囲にわたる 貿易（する） and untiring 商業の activity.

King Street, Plate 26A

A 群れている of calumnious libellers have lately 設立する it a profitable 憶測, at least so it may be inferred from the assiduity with which they persevere in their vocation, to propagate the most abominable falsehoods 尊敬（する）・点ing the 明言する／公表する of society in New South むちの跡s, 特に in Sydney. Some person of the 指名する of Byrne in a 出版（物） which has lately appeared in London, has however excelled most of his 前任者s in fertile 力／強力にするs of unblushing and inventive mendacity. We cannot pass over these systematic attacks upon the fair fame of our 可決する・採択するd land without 表明するing the indignation they excite, 同様に as our surprise that the British public should be so far 課すd upon as to 許容する and encourage such 集まりs of absurd falsehoods. We can only account for the fact that such 調書をとる／予約するs have purchasers, by supposing that it proceeds from the same depravation of public taste that finds greedy readers for 高度に wrought 詳細（に述べる）s of 罪，犯罪 and 殺人, and the extent of credulity for which John Bull is so famous, and which readily gives credence to any thing, however monstrous, which comes from {page 27} a distance. We will not rely upon our own flat contradiction of such malevolent and baseless effusions: we will 引用する a few lines from an impartial 証言，証人／目撃する, a distinguished foreigner, Count P. E. De Strzelecki, whose 価値のある work on New South むちの跡s is too 深遠な and 科学の to 得る the 広まる library notoriety of the mendacious babblers to which we allude. Count Strzelecki wrote in Sydney, under the fresh impression of surprise at the scene which surrounded him, having been deluded into the belief that he could scarcely disembark in Sydney with any degree of safety: he 引用するs his memorandum, made at the time, in a 公式文書，認める upon the introduction of his 調書をとる／予約する:

"Let the authors of these epithets on New South むちの跡s congratulate and applaud themselves; my mystification was 完全にする...I 設立する, however, in the streets of Sydney a decency and a 静かな which I have never 証言，証人／目撃するd in any other of the ports of the 部隊d Kingdom. No drunkenness, no sailors' quarrels, no 外見s of 売春. George Street, the Regent Street of Sydney, 現在のd houses and shops modelled after those of London; but nowhere did its lamps and the 非常に／多数の lights in its windows, 反映するd upon the （人が）群がる, betray those 調印するs of a corrupt society ありふれた to the streets of other 資本／首都s."--P. 2 Introduction.

We wish our space 許すd us to 引用する more 大部分は from the repeated 証言 in favour of the general morality and 歓待 勝つ／広く一帯に広がるing throughout the 植民地, borne by one whose minute enquiries and 広範囲にわたる 適切な時期s of 観察 （判決などを）下す it of so much value, while at the same time he may 公正に／かなり be considered to have written without prejudice or bias. Another foreign gentleman, who enjoyed the best 適切な時期s of becoming 熟知させるd with the 明言する／公表する of society amongst us, M. Delessert, has published a pleasing sketch of his rambles in the 植民地, in which he 記録，記録的な／記録するs his 感謝する sense of the 親切 and 歓待 which 迎える／歓迎するd him everywhere, and the 高度に favourable ideas which he formed of the manners and morals of the Colonists. Is it {page 28} not scandalous that we should be compelled to 控訴，上告 to foreigners against the calumnies heaped on us by our own countrymen?

CHAPTER VII.

ST JAMES CHURCH--KING STREET

The intersecting lines of George Street and King Street--the former from north to south, the latter from east to west--divide the City into four parts; the 分割s of the streets, at this point, 存在 指定するd by the points of the compass. Turning to the left, from George Street, we proceed up King Street East, a 部分 of which is shown in our Descriptive Engraving--a line of 栄えるing shops, some of them of かなりの importance. Passing Pitt Street, Castlereagh Street, and Elizabeth Street on our 権利 and left, we reach a group of public buildings. On the 権利 手渡す, the 最高裁判所 of the 植民地, and St. James's Church, a 見解（をとる） of which is 別館d: in 前線, the pile of building called Hyde Park 兵舎, 以前は tenanted by the 罪人／有罪を宣告するs in 政府 service. Although 非，不，無 of these edifices have much architectural pretension, 存在 建設するd 完全に of brick and devoid of ornament, yet, the 割合s 存在 good, the 集まりs 幅の広い, and the lines bold and 無傷の, they form an 課すing and dignified whole.

St. James's Church is a building of かなりの dimensions, the 創立／基礎 of which was laid on the 7th October, 1819. The spire, surmounting the brick tower at the west end, not only takes away from the heaviness of the edifice, but also forms a 目だつ 反対する from every part of the City and its neighbourhood. The 内部の, which is commodiously fitted up, received かなりの 改良s about two years ago; the galleries were altered and 大きくするd, and the Church now affords sittings for 1500 persons. There is a 井戸／弁護士席 トンd and powerful 組織／臓器, and an excellent choir {page 29} under the direction of Mr. James Johnson, to whom the 植民地 is indebted for the first introduction of this 支店 of music. The Choral Society, について言及するd above, 借りがあるs its origin to the 会合s 初めは held for practice for the service of this Church. St. James's, although not the oldest, may, probably, be considered the 主要な／長／主犯 Church of the City. 据えるd 近づく 政府 House, in the centre of the most 流行の／上流の part of the metropolis, the congregation usually 含むs the family of the 知事, and a large 割合 of the 主要な members of society. It is also decidedly the favourite 訴える手段／行楽地 for the more aristocratical の中で the votaries of Hymen. Divine Service is 成し遂げるd three times on Sunday, every Friday and 宗教上の Day, and 祈りs are read every morning at nine. The 現在の 現職の is the Rev. Robert Allwood, M. A., the learned 大統領 of the Theological College at Lyndhurst, 補助装置d by the Rev. Mr. Priddle and the Rev. Mr. Macarthur; the latter gentleman (a native of the 植民地) is a younger member of the 尊敬（する）・点d family whose 指名する is so inseparably connected with the 早期に annals of the 植民地.

Opposite the north-eastern angle of St. James's Church is the Office of the Bishop's Registrar, the 周辺 probably of which, 連合させるd with the advantages of locality, and the superior accommodations of the building, （判決などを）下すs St. James's, although not the Diocesan Church, the seat of the most important 処理／取引s connected with the Church of England. It may not be out of place here to について言及する that the 現在の Lord Bishop of Sydney, the 権利 Reverend William 認める Broughton, D. D., is the first Prelate who 統括するd over an episcopal see in this 植民地. His Lordship first arrived on the 13th September, 1829, as Archdeacon; New South むちの跡s 存在 then 名目上 大（公）使館員d to the see of Calcutta, although the distance and unfrequency of communication 妨げるd, of course, any 干渉，妨害 on the part of the titular 長，率いる of our Church. He returned by the Camden, from a visit to England, on the 2nd June, 1836, with the 肩書を与える and 当局 of Bishop of Australia, and was 任命する／導入するd the same day {page 30} in St. James's Church; the ecclesiastical importance of the 植民地 having been at length considered 十分な to する権利を与える it to 解放（する） from the imaginary dependence in which it had 以前 been held. In its connexion with the English Church, Australia is comprehended in the Archepiscopal 裁判権 of Canterbury. Rather more than two years since, his Lordship 発表するd that, having for some time past considered the diocese (含むing as it did the country from Moreton Bay, to Portland Bay) too 広範囲にわたる to be 適切に superintended by one Bishop, he had 決定するd on requesting the 政府 to 任命する another. 恐れるing, however, that 反対s on the 得点する／非難する／２０ of expense would be raised to his 提案, he met them in 予期 by the munificent and singularly disinterested 申し込む／申し出 to sacrifice half his professional income (then &続けざまに猛撃する;2,500 per 年) as an endowment for the second see:--an instance of self-devotion to which, perhaps, it would be difficult to find a 平行の. The Home 政府, however, did not think itself 正当化するd in taking advantage of this liberality to its 十分な extent; but 従うd with the suggestion of the Bishop so far as to deduct the sum of &続けざまに猛撃する;500 per 年 from the 資源s of the Bishopric of Australia, and to sub-divide it into three; Sydney having a 主要都市の 優越 over the other two, Newcastle and Melbourne. It is almost presumption in us to 申し込む／申し出 an opinion on the 長所s of this 著名な Prelate; but we cannot 差し控える from making use of the 適切な時期 now afforded us of 記録，記録的な／記録するing the humble 尊敬の印 of our 賞賛 of them. Those who know the many difficulties he has had to 競う against can alone 高く評価する／（相場などが）上がる the 技術 with which he has 行為／行うd the 事件／事情／状勢s of the Church: his zeal for its 繁栄 is 十分に 論証するd by the 活動／戦闘 we have just 関係のある. CHAPTER VIII.

PITT STREET.--ROYAL VICTORIA THEATER.

Retracing our steps from the eastern termination of King Street, we return to its 交差点 with Pitt Street. The …を伴ってing embellishment comprehends the elevations of the buildings in this Street, 訴訟／進行 southward from King Street to Market Street; a line which may, on many accounts, （人命などを）奪う，主張する to be considered one of the most remarkable localities in Sydney, and where, 特に in the evening, when the Theatre is open, の中で the 炎 of gas from the splendid and glittering shops, the music and bustle …に出席するing the movements of a （人が）群がる bent on its evening's amusement, and those of the multitude still busied in の近くにing the avocations of the day, the new arrival from London may recognise the most striking features of that 広大な／多数の／重要な City 部隊d in the 変化させるd scene around him; on a diminutive 規模, it is true, as compared with those of the metropolis of the world, but にもかかわらず the 同一の features in miniature. He will here find a combination of 社債 Street and Drury 小道／航路, while the scene is ぱらぱら雨d with a 十分なこと of blue and red jackets to give it a slight touch of Wapping and Tothill Fields, divested of their grosser and objectionable peculiarities. This 部分 of the Street 現在のs on the whole the most continuous lines of buildings, perhaps, which can be 設立する in Sydney, and 申し込む／申し出s より小数の 反対するs calculated to remind the new corner that he is in a young town. Selected by the purveyors to beauty and fashion as the 市場 for 陳列する，発揮するing their tempting wares, articles are there 陳列する，発揮するd to attract and tempt the 注目する，もくろむ, 同様に as some of the best 見本／標本s of 国内の architecture which the town affords. の中で these, four houses, built under the superintendence of Mr. Duer, Architect, deserve to be particularised on account of the good taste 陳列する，発揮するd {page 32} in the design, and the excellence of the work and 構成要素s 雇うd. The 前線s are bold and lofty, 直面するd with 罰金 brick with 大規模な 石／投石する dressings and cornices. The spirited proprietor, Mr. Moffitt, deserves 広大な／多数の／重要な credit for the liberality with which he has 与える／捧げるd に向かって ornamenting the city. There are also some other good 見本／標本s of building, 含むing the Theatre and its dependencies, but for these we reserve a special notice. の中で the 反対するs 井戸／弁護士席 deserving 査察 is the Shakspeare Saloon, (築くd in 1846 by its spirited proprietor, Mr. Knight), 隠すd within the modest exterior of the Shakspeare Tavern, where the 訪問者 is surprised to find a 井戸／弁護士席 割合d apartment lighted from the roof, richly and artistically decorated with designs from some of the most striking scenes in the 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業d of Avon's matchless 作品, painted as vignettes in compartments, upon the 塀で囲むs. These designs sprang from the fanciful pencil of Mr. A. Torning, who was 補助装置d in the 死刑執行 of them by Messrs. Newall and Balcomb, whose 指名するs are 登録（する）d in the 古記録s of 植民地の Art.

We now turn to the Victoria Theatre, the 内部の of which forms the 支配する of one of the pictorial illustrations of the 現在の number. Before, however, entering upon a 詳細（に述べる）d description of this elegant edifice, it may not be uninteresting to trace the 早期に, rude, and unformed 成果／努力s of the 劇の art in this 植民地, through their さまざまな 段階s, until they reached the high position of the 現在の day. It is needless to enter into a 非常に長い dissertation upon the humanizing 影響（力）s which the 演劇 演習s over mankind: the eloquence of the orator, the philosopher, the poet, and the historian is raised in its laudation; and if they fail to 納得させる, the 激しい sympathy which the Theatre finds with the people is an unerring 証言 of its value. Sergeant Talfourd, one of the first dramatists and lawyers of the day, in descanting upon the 支配する, with all the feeling of an enthusiastic and powerful mind, 令状s thus:--"Surely the art which separates, as by a divine alchymy, the 人工的な from {page 33} real in humanity--which 供給（する）s, to the artisan in the 資本／首都, the place of those 支持を得ようと努めるd, and 解放する／自由な 空気／公表するs, and mountain streams, which insensibly harmonise the 小作農民's character--which gives the poorest to feel the old grandeur of 悲劇, 広範囲にわたる by with sceptred path--which makes the heart of the child leap with strange joy, and enables the old man to fancy himself again a child--is worthy of no mean place の中で the arts which 精製する our manners, by exulting our conception." This opinion is 特に echoed in the bosoms of the sons of Britain. It is not, therefore, to be wondered at that the first wretched 追放するs who （機の）カム into the 植民地 should have endeavoured to relieve the monotony of a bush life, and to コースを変える their minds from brooding over unpleasant reflections, by getting up a 劇の entertainment. The 規模 was humble enough, consisting, in the first instance, of mere recitations from 井戸／弁護士席-known authors; these subsequently grew into 試みる／企てるs to produce 完全にする 演劇s; and singular to relate, in 1826, during the 王朝 of General Darling, the Gaol of Sydney was turned into a 寺 of Thespis; the debtors' room afforded the 円形競技場; and persons of the highest standing in the town were not ashamed to 証言，証人／目撃する the 天然のまま 代表s or these 劇の 熱中している人s.

It was some years subsequently to this that his Excellency Sir Richard Bourke 認めるd Mr. Barnett 徴収する a license for 劇の 業績／成果s, with a 制限 that he should 限定する himself to the 代表 of such pieces only as had been licensed in England, by the Lord Chamberlain. Mr. 徴収する was at that time the owner of the 初めの 王室の Hotel, in George Street, and he fitted up the Saloon of that 設立 as a Theatre, where the first 見本／標本s of the 合法的 演劇 were 展示（する）d in the 植民地. The 激励 which this untertaking received induced the spirited Proprietor to 大きくする his sphere of 活動／戦闘. He 原因（となる）d a Theatre to be built, which was 称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語d the "Theatre 王室の," and opened it at the latter end of the year 1833, with the best company that could be {page 34} collected. The first 経営者／支配人 was Mr. Meredith, who, at that time, acquired some celebrity for his personation of old men, but he has since retired, for the most part, from the 行う／開催する／段階. This gentleman was 後継するd in his office by Mr. Simmons, who 脱退するd, after a 管理／経営 of some two or three years, when the Theatre fell into the 手渡すs of Mr. Joseph Wyatt, one of the Proprietors of the Victoria Theatre in Pitt Street, the 内部の of which is the 支配する of our pictorial illustration.

The 創立／基礎 石／投石する of this latter building was laid on the 7th September, 1836, by Mr. R. 幅の広い; the architect was Mr. Henry Robertson, many structures from whose 手渡す now ornament the metropolis. The exterior of the building 現在のs an 極端に chaste 外見, and is more 課すing than if a more florid style of architecture had been 可決する・採択するd. The 入り口 to the Dress Circle and Upper Boxes is enclosed by a pair of handsome and elaborately designed アイロンをかける gates; on either 味方する of them are two handsome shops, one of which is 占領するd as a Tavern, by Mr. Wyatt, and the other by Mr. Blyth, a Confectioner. The 入り口s to the 炭坑，オーケストラ席 and Gallery are most conveniently placed on the north 味方する. The size of the Theatre is 100 feet by 50; the 行う／開催する／段階 is 47 feet 幅の広い, and 100 feet in depth, 60 feet having been 追加するd to the 初めの design, by throwing open some 前提s at the 支援する. For greater convenience, the Green Room, Dressing Rooms, Scene Painter's Room, and other necessary apartments, although in 即座の contiguity with the main building, do not form any 部分 of it. The 内部の of the house is arranged into the Upper and Dress Circle, with an 広範囲にわたる 炭坑，オーケストラ席 and Gallery. The Boxes will 持つ／拘留する about 550 people, the 炭坑，オーケストラ席 1000, and the Gallery 350, making in all 2000 individuals; but even more than that number have been in the house on particular occasions. The Theatre was opened on the 17th of March, 1838, Mr. Wyatt having 申し込む／申し出d its service gratuitously for a public ball, in 記念 of the patron Saint of Ireland. In a few days afterwards the 業績／成果s 開始するd with an excellent company, and have {page 35} continued with signal success until the 現在の day. Several changes have occured in the Proprietorship and 管理／経営 of the Theatre since its 開始; the former is now in the 手渡すs of Messrs. Wyatt and Knight, while the 行う／開催する／段階 direction vests in Mr. Griffiths.

It may appear somewhat invidious to 学校／設ける comparisons between the 早期に performers at the Victoria and those of the 現在の day, but it is universally 定評のある that the Company was never so strong in all its departments as now. Mr. Nesbitt, Mr. Griffiths, Mr. Arabin, and Mrs. Guerin are the 主要な／長／主犯 支持者s of Melpomene; her higher sister Thalia 誇るs of Mr. Frank Howson, Mr. Hydes, Mr. Rogers, Mr. Hambleton, Mr. Griffiths, and Mesdames Guerin, Gibbs, Ximines, and Carandini: in オペラ, these ladies are also powerful adjuncts, and, with Mr. John Howson, his brother, and the other 援助（する）s of the Theatre, many of the most favorite オペラs on the English 行う／開催する／段階 have been produced here in a very superior style. In summing up the 改良s of late years, the Orchestra must not be forgotten, which, under the able direction of Mr. John Gibbs, has 達成するd a high grade in musical excellence. In quitting this 支配する, it is 予定 to the Proprietors of the Victoria Theatre to 発言／述べる, that they deserve the thanks of the public for their exertions in 支持するing the 演劇 throughout the general 不景気 of 植民地の 事件／事情／状勢s, and for having 保存するd its high トン amongst a community formed of such discordant elements.

CHAPTER IX.

PITT STREET (CONTINUED).--SCHOOL OP ARTS.--INDEPENDENT CHAPEL.

訴訟／進行 along Pitt Street we cross Market Street, at which point the character of the former thoroughfare changes very かなり. The {page 36} 流行の／上流の 設立s give place in a 広大な／多数の／重要な 手段 to those of a more utilitarian description, の中で which are many 卸売 and 製造業の 関心s on a very 広範囲にわたる 規模. We now arrive at one of the most 利益／興味ing 会・原則s of the 植民地, the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts. The building at 現在の 占領するd by the Society, 存在 only ーするつもりであるd for 一時的な 目的s, 申し込む／申し出s no architectural features worthy of 存在 挿入するd の中で our illustrations; but if the support of the public should keep pace with the ambition of the 経営者／支配人s, the School of Arts, ere many years have elapsed, will form one of the most 目だつ ornaments of the metropolis. The 反対するs of the 会・原則 are 類似の to those which have been so successful in the parent country,--the diffusion of useful knowledge, and the awakening a love of 熟考する／考慮する, by means of a Library, News and Reading Rooms, Lectures, and Classes for 指示／教授／教育, accessible on 条件 within the reach of the いっそう少なく 豊富な orders of Society. Since the year 1823, when the 会・原則 was first 事業／計画（する）d, it has partaken of the 変化させるing fortunes of the 繁栄 of the 植民地, 徐々に 増加するing, however, until, at the date of the last 報告（する）／憶測, the number of members was four hundred and ninety-two, of whom fifty-one were life members. Their Excellencies Sir Richard Bourke, the late 知事 of the 植民地, and his 後継者 Sir Charles Augustus Fitz Roy, have evinced the warm 利益／興味 they felt in the 福利事業 of the 会・原則 by 許すing their 影響力のある 指名するs to be used as its patrons, and afforded all the support that 政府 was in a position to 延長する to it.

The idea of forming a Mechanics' School of Arts in this 植民地 was first 公然と broached by the Rev. Henry Carmichael and Dr. 禁止（する）d. After some trouble and much discussion a 委員会 was formed, the only members of which now remaining amongst us are, as far as we have been able to ascertain, Mr. Henry Hollinshed and Mr. Thomas Carter. The Rev. Dr. Lang 補佐官d the 進歩 of the 幼児 請け負うing, by the 貸付金 of apparatus, besides 与える／捧げるing 価値のある 援助 in other 尊敬（する）・点s, {page 37} by his learned and eloquent lectures, and 非常に／多数の 現在のs. It is also with 楽しみ we 記録，記録的な／記録する the 指名するs of Dr. Nicholson, the worthy 大統領; Dr. Leichhart, Arthur A'Becket, Archibald Michie, and W. T. Cape, Esqs., who have all, by their exertions either in the 配達／演説／出産 of lectures or さもなければ, 与える／捧げるd materially to the 進歩 of the 会・原則.

The 現在の building 含む／封じ込めるs an ill arranged Theatre, in which the lectures are 配達するd, (and is also occasionally used for concerts and public 会合s, 独立した・無所属 of the 会・原則), Library, and Reading Room, besides 私的な apartments for the Librarian.

The Library itself 含む／封じ込めるs 3000, 容積／容量s, embracing every 支店 of Literature and Science, an 拡張 of which is continually made by 購入（する） and 現在のs: during the last year it was 増加するd by the 新規加入 of 138 容積／容量s. The Reading Room, which 隣接するs the Library, is open daily, from nine in the morning till the same hour at night, for the convenience of its members; and upon its （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する will be 設立する Blackwood's, Tait's, Fraser's, Bentley's, The Penny, and New 月毎の Magazines, The 部隊d Service, Art Union, Dublin University, 議会s' Edinburgh, The Civil Engineers and Architects 定期刊行物s, The Lancet, 年４回の Review, and La Belle 組み立てる／集結する, together with the 観客, Evening Mail, Punch, Illustrated London News, Sydney Morning 先触れ（する）, and Atlas Newspapers. Several other British and 植民地の 定期刊行物s were 以前は received, but it having been communicated to the Library 委員会 that many of the Reviews and Magazines, and even Newspapers, were never opened by Members visiting the Reading Room, and 存在 desirous of retrenching their expenses, eight of the former and six of the latter were very 適切に discontinued.

The 会・原則 also 所有するs a very choice and 広範囲にわたる collection of 化石s and 地質学の 見本／標本s, and, in connexion with the Lecture Room, 完全にする apparatus for the illustration of lectures on Chemistry, Mechanics, etc., which has cost the 会・原則 上向きs of five hundred {page 38} 続けざまに猛撃するs. The 年次の subscription to the Society is only twelve shillings, and it is 平等に a 事柄 of surprise and 悔いる that in so 広範囲にわたる a community as that of Sydney there should be 設立する so few who 展示（する） a disposition to support, either for personal 楽しみ and 改良 or public 利益, such an 会・原則 as the School of Arts. 心から, however, do we 信用 that ere long we shall 観察する an 進歩 in the march of 知識人 taste and refinement, and the classes judiciously 事業／計画（する）d by the 委員会 (now almost neglected) become thronged with the youthful members of this Society, emulating each other in the acquirement of useful knowledge.

E'en now the midnight waneth, and the day
Of Truth is 夜明けing with a brighter ray.
O'er this fair land she spreads the fruits of peace,
企て，努力，提案s schools arise--the finer arts 増加する,
Rebukes the 狭くする minds that vainly 努力する／競う
To keep a moral ignorance alive;
And 証明するs 宗教, Order, and Repose
Are best 保存するd as man in knowledge grows.

The Congregational Church, or, as it is frequently called, the 独立した・無所属 Chapel, Pitt Street, is the handsomest building of the 肉親，親類d in Sydney, or indeed in any of these 植民地s. It was designed by Mr. John Bibb, Architect, and 築くd under his superintendence. The 創立／基礎 石／投石する was laid by the Rev. Dr. Ross on the 26th of January, 1841; but in consequence of the embarrassed 明言する／公表する of the 植民地 it was soon after thought 慎重な to 一時停止する the 進歩 of the work, and it was not until October, 1844, that it was 決定するd to recommence it. The Church was opened for public worship on the 1st January, 1846, by 宗教的な services in which さまざまな 大臣s of other denominations of Christians took a part. The whole cost of the erection has 量d to 上向きs of &続けざまに猛撃する;6,000, which has been raised by voluntary 出資／貢献, it 存在 contrary {page 39} to the 原則s of this 団体／死体 of Christians to 受託する of 援助 from 政府, either for the building of their churches or the support of their 大臣s.

The 前線 of the building is of the Ionic order of Architecture, with two columns twenty-six feet in 高さ, によれば the Ionic 寺 of the Ilisus at Athens; and four Antaic pilasters with ornamental 資本／首都s; with an entablature and pediment 延長するing over the columns and pilasters. The design is in imitation of the smallest Grecian 寺, denominated by the Greeks a "寺 in Antis" at the 主要な／長／主犯 入り口 to the Cella (or 内部の) of the 寺. The whole 前線 is of polished 解放する／自由な-石／投石する, and is divided from the street by an ornamental アイロンをかける railing on a dwarf 石／投石する 塀で囲む, The pulpit is octagonal, standing on a bold pedestal, and has many carved mouldings of Grecian leaves and ornaments; it is 上がるd by a winding stair, and is made of the most handsome cedar, which is French polished. The edifice is ninety-five feet long, forty-five feet wide, and thirty feet high, all in （疑いを）晴らす of the 内部の. The ground 床に打ち倒す has two 入り口 vestibules, which 含む／封じ込める the stairs 主要な to the galleries, and between them is a room used as a vestry or school room, and which will 含む／封じ込める about one hundred and thirty children. Above the vestibules and the vestry is a large room, divided by a balustre railing from the galleries, used also as a school room and sittings for the Sunday school children during divine worship; it will 融通する two hundred and forty children. The 内部の of the Church is elliptical on the ground 計画（する） at the end opposite to the pulpit, and three pews in width against the 塀で囲む run 平行の to the 味方するs and circular end with an elevation of four インチs at each pew, an 協定 favourable for 伝えるing the sound to all parts of the spacious building: galleries at two 味方するs and at the end opposite to the pulpit follow the same curve as the 塀で囲むs and pews below, and are supported by fourteen cast アイロンをかける columns of the Ionic order and fluted. These were cast by Mr. Dawson, of Sydney, in a very neat and {page 40} superior manner, and are the first 一連の ornamental columns cast in the 植民地--they are 'finished in imitation bronze. The Church will 融通する about one thousand persons with sittings, besides the children of the Sunday school. The whole of the pews are of cedar, and the breast-work でっちあげる，人を罪に陥れるing in 前線 of the galleries is of the most choice 肉親，親類d, equal in 外見 to mahogany. The place is 井戸／弁護士席 lighted with gas, except the pulpit, on each 味方する of which are handsome 厚かましさ／高級将校連 sconces for wax candles. The bronze pendants which hang from the entablature of the galleries are nearly five feet in length, are very 大規模な, and were made, with the other lighting apparatus, under the direction of the Engineer of the Gas Company. There is also a beautiful 組織／臓器 built 特に for this Church by Mr. W. J. Johnson of Sydney.

It was not until the year 1828 that the Congregationalists made any movement in Sydney as a 際立った 団体／死体 of Christians. Although 非常に／多数の and powerful in England, their number in this 植民地, from さまざまな 原因（となる）s, some of them no 疑問 高度に creditable to them, has never been very 広大な／多数の／重要な. In that year they 招待するd the 援助 of the public に向かって the erection of a Chapel in which they might worship God によれば their own 原則s, and be the means, along with other denominations, of diffusing he knowledge of divine truth の中で the ignorant and the depraved of this City. By persevering and 熱心な 成果／努力s they 後継するd in the 購入（する） of land, and in the erection of a building in Pitt Street, next to the School of Arts, which in 1833 was opened for divine worship, and in which the Rev. W. Jarrett, who （機の）カム out the same year from England, officiated as their 大臣 for 上向きs of five years. Having left the 植民地 in 1838 he was 後継するd by the Rev. Dr. Ross, 以前は of Kidderminster, in Worcestershire, but who, at the 緊急の request of the 植民地の Missionary Society, 辞職するd his pastoral 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金 there in order that he might 充てる himself to the 利益／興味s of 宗教, in connexion with the 団体／死体 to which he belongs here, and {page 41} also 行為／法令／行動する as スパイ／執行官 of the London Missionary Society, for the 非常に／多数の important 使節団s it has 設立するd in the islands of the 太平洋の. He arrived in the 植民地 in February, 1840, and すぐに 開始するd his 大臣の 義務s, which he still continues to 発射する／解雇する. In a short time after his arrival the congregation 増加するd so much that it was considered advisable to 築く a larger building,--and the 現在の handsome edifice in which they now worship has been the result, with a large and 増加するing congregation.

CHAPTER X.

PITT STREET NORTH.--UNION BANK OF AUSTRALIA.--THE FREE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

Having followed Pitt Street in a southerly direction as far as Park Street, we retrace our steps, and our ninth and tenth numbers 含む／封じ込める 代表s of the houses in Pitt Street north, from King Street to its termination; together with a 部分 of Hunter Street.

The 現在の illustrations are 高度に characteristic of the transitory 明言する／公表する of an 幼児 City, from its 原始の bark or 厚板 huts to more convenient 天候-boarded cottages, and lastly to the 相当な and handsome 石／投石する and brick houses, of which we here 現在の some creditable 見本／標本s.

開始するing at King Street we have, on the 権利 手渡す, or east corner, the Rose and 栄冠を与える Hotel and Restaurant, by Mr. 勝利，勝つ. Toogood, and 隣接するing, a 範囲 of respectable houses; the upper 部分s of several (from their proximity to the 法廷，裁判所s of 法律) are 占領するd as 議会s by members of the 合法的な profession. On the opposite corner is the Rainbow Tavern, 築くd a few years since, and opened by Mr. William Toogood--now kept by Mr. T. W. Roche. 訴訟／進行 a little その上の, the first house {page 42} of any 利益／興味 engaging our attention is that 占領するd by Mr. Foss, 化学者／薬剤師 and Druggist. It was here the celebrated Quaker, John Tawell, resided, and in the year 1823 開始するd the 商売／仕事 now carried on, and which is said to have been the first 正規の／正選手 設立 of the 肉親，親類d in the 植民地; this he 行為／行うd 首尾よく about four years, when he 性質の／したい気がして of the same to the 現在の proprietor, and in the next year, 1828, sailed for England, where, in March, 1845, he was 遂行する／発効させるd for the 殺人 of Sarah Hart at Salt Hill, 近づく Slough, leaving かなりの 所有物／資産／財産 in the 植民地.

隣接するing Mr. Alexander's Coach 設立 and Livery Stables, on the opposite 味方する of the Street, is the Office of the "Australian Sportsman," a 週刊誌 newspaper 行為／行うd with かなりの talent, its 反対する 存在 to 供給（する） faithful 記録，記録的な／記録するs of every 冒険的な event in the 植民地s. The next house is the 住居 of Dr. Bland, one whose 指名する will ever be remembered with reverence by the colonists, for his unwearied zeal in connexion with the 愛国的な 協会, in procuring for this 植民地 a 代表者／国会議員 議会, and to which, with his compatriot, W. C. Wentworth, Esq., he was returned at the first 選挙, in 1843, as member for this City.

A few yards その上の is the 住居 of John Hosking, Esq., (first 市長 of Sydney), and すぐに 直面するing is Gill's Hotel, one of the best houses in Sydney. It was 築くd in 1835, by Mr. Saul Lyons, and used by him as a 私的な 住居 until 1846, when it was let to the 現在の occupant. We have next a low 範囲 of 天候-boarded cottages, in the first of which a 豊富な old colonist of the 指名する of Connell has resided forty-nine years. The 罰金 列／漕ぐ／騒動 of brick houses opposite, known as Terry's Buildings, form an agreeable contrast to the mean cottages just noticed, and which, it is to be hoped, will soon give place to more 相当な and ornamental buildings. Mrs. Terry, 未亡人 of the 悪名高くも 豊富な Sam Terry, lives in the long 石／投石する house on the west 味方する, and, after passing a few small {page 43} shops, the 罰金 範囲 of 石／投石する buildings (lately the Fitz Roy Hotel), Messrs. Rowand, M'逮捕する, and Co.'s 設立s, etc., we arrive at the Union Bank of Australia. It was 開始するd in 1839, and that part 延長するing from Hunter Street as far as the vestibule was 完全にするd in April, 1840, when the 商売／仕事 of the Bank, which had been carried on from its 開始／学位授与式 at 一時的な offices in King Street, was 除去するd to the new building. The 商売／仕事 of the Bank, however, having 増加するd so 速く, it was 設立する necessary, for その上の accommodation, to make a かなりの 新規加入, and the other 部分 south of the former was 築くd in 1846, under the superintendence, and from the designs of, John Bibb, Esq., Architect, to whose taste, 技術, and ability the work itself 耐えるs 継続している 証言.

The Union Bank of Australia was 設立するd in London, October, 1837, for 行為／行うing the 商売／仕事 of Banking in the Australian 植民地s, with a 資本／首都 of &続けざまに猛撃する;500,000, afterwards 増加するd to &続けざまに猛撃する;800,000. 支店s are formed at Sydney, Melbourne, Geelong, Portland, and Bathurst, in New South むちの跡s; Hobart Town and Launceston, in 先頭 Diemen's Land; Auckland and Wellington, in New Zealand. The 商売／仕事 of each 支店 is 行為／行うd by 地元の Directors, a 経営者／支配人, and Accountant--the whole 存在 under the 支配（する）／統制する of the London Board of twelve Directors.

The さまざまな 支店s are under the superintendence of an 視察官--John Cunningham M'Laren.

The Union Bank of Australia is 据えるd at the corner of Pitt and Hunter Streets, the 主要な／長／主犯 前線, 延長するing about eighty-five feet, 存在 in the former, whilst the other, to the extent of about fifty feet, is in the latter Street. The whole of the 地階 story is rusticated, with arched windows and doors, and at the 主要な／長／主犯 入り口 to the vestibule of the Bank Offices is a chaste portico of the Grecian Doric order, supporting another on the next story of the Ionic, with ballustrade, pediment, and acroteria; the same order is continued by 大（公）使館員d columns between the {page 44} windows in Pitt Street, and by ant pilasters in Hunter Street, surmounted by a handsome cornice; the upper story of both 前線s is the Attic order of pilasters and cornice, and 栄冠を与えるd on the 前線 in Pitt Street with carved acroteria above the blockings.

Our engraving, however, gives a more 訂正する idea of the building than any description can. We will only 発言／述べる that whether we consider the light and elegant exterior, or the admirable 手はず／準備 within, it must be 認める one of the best buildings in the City, and one of its greatest ornaments.

The 解放する／自由な Presbyterian Church, which forms the 支配する of our 現在の illustration, is a very neat, plain, and commodious edifice, 存在 centrally 据えるd in Pitt Street, between Market and Park Streets. It was 築くd in 1830, by the Congregationalists, and, upon the 開始 of their new place of worship, was 購入（する）d, in 1846, for the use of the 解放する／自由な Presbyterian community.

The community worshipping in this Church, under the denomination of the 解放する／自由な Presbyterian Church of Eastern Australia, 占領するs the same position in this 植民地 the 解放する／自由な Church does in Scotland, and its 分離, in 1846, from the 教会会議 of Australia (which is also 同一の with the 設立するd Church of Scotland) arose from the same 推論する／理由s that 原因（となる）d the disruption at home; esteeming it unscriptural to recognise the 最高位 of the civil 力／強力にするs, in spiritual 事柄s. The 大臣 at 現在の officiating is the Rev. William M'Kee.

CHAPTER XI.

HUNTER STREET--EARLY HISTORY CONTINUED.

The 部分 of Hunter Street 代表するd in our …を伴ってing plate {page 45} 延長するs from Pitt Street 西方の as far as Castlereagh Street. The upper line 含む／封じ込めるs the 広範囲にわたる 蓄える／店s of Messrs. Flower, Salting, and Co.; the 私的な 住居 of Mr. Young, and 蓄える／店s belonging to the 会社／堅い of Young and Co.; whilst the corner (a low verandah cottage, and one of the old style) is 占領するd by Mr. Armstrong, the Veterinary 外科医, whose Hospital and Stables are 据えるd in the yard at the 支援する. The house 直面するing, with verandah, is the 住居 of Mr. T. E. Jones, whose Stables form the 倉庫・駅 for the Hon. East India Company's horses, 購入（する）d in the 植民地 for 出荷／船積み.

The year 1790 was one of the most 悲惨な in the annals of the 植民地. 早期に in the year the flour that had been brought from England was exhausted, and there only remained that which had been taken in at the Cape: the 収穫, too, had not produced more than would be 要求するd for seed, the whole 生産／産物 of the cultivated land at Rose Hill 存在 two hundred bushels of wheat, thirty-five of barley, and a small 量 of oats and maize. The 知事's farm at Sydney, which had only been sown with barley, 産する／生じるd only twenty-five bushels.

Captain King, however, who had been sent with a number of 囚人s and a detachment of 海洋s, to form a 解決／入植地 at Norfolk Island, having 報告（する）／憶測d favourably of the richness of the 国／地域, and the success …に出席するing their 成果／努力s at cultivation, notwithstanding the continued 干ばつ they had experienced, 決定するd Captain Phillip upon sending thither about two hundred of the 罪人／有罪を宣告するs, and two companies of the 海洋s, with their officers, and by this means relieving the 準備／条項 蓄える／店 for a time. It was also 決定するd that, upon the return of the Sirius from Norfolk Island, she should be despatched to 中国 for 準備／条項s, if 救済 had not 以前 arrived: but, 式のs! she was doomed never to return. After a 罰金 run of only seven days she landed the 罪人／有罪を宣告するs and 海洋s in Cascade Bay, when a 強風 rising she was compelled to run for Sydney Bay, on the 物陰／風下 味方する of the Island, and （機の）カム to an 錨，総合司会者, from which however she {page 46} drifted, and, in endeavouring to work out, struck upon the 激しく揺するs, and became a total 難破させる. The officers and 乗組員 were 救助（する）d by 存在 運ぶ／漁獲高d through the surf on a grating; and nearly the whole of the 蓄える／店s were providentially saved.

The return of the 供給（する） to Sydney with this 苦しめるing 知能 spread 全世界の／万国共通の 狼狽, and even the most 勇敢な and sanguine became depressed. Their last hope was now concentrated in the 供給（する）, which was to be despatched to Batavia as soon as she could be got ready. Yet, after their 最近の misfortune, how fearful to 熟視する／熟考する their very 存在 as depending upon the safety of one frail bark, which a hidden 激しく揺する or tempestuous sea might in one moment destroy. As the 準備／条項s in 蓄える／店 were now 減ずるd to so low a pitch, it was again 決定するd to 減ずる the already scanty pittance, and from the first of April the 週刊誌 ration of each adult was only two and a half 続けざまに猛撃するs of flour, two 続けざまに猛撃するs of pork, and one each of rice and peas; and after having been kept for two years, it can easily be imagined of how inferior a description these were.

The 供給（する） sailed on the 17th of April, and it was 概算の she would be absent at least six months.

Two years had now elapsed without any communication from home; the 着せる／賦与するing was as much 減ずるd as their 準備／条項s, and many died from 餓死; some little 救済 was 得るd by fishing, but their lines and 逮捕するs were also worn out, and the 植民地 did not even 所有する the 構成要素s requisite to mend them. A 罪人／有罪を宣告する, however, managed to spin some lines from the bark of a tree, which 一時的に 供給（する）d their boats.

The greatest 警告を与える and severity was necessary to 妨げる 強盗s of 準備／条項s, which were however frequently committed, and many 苦しむd death for their temerity.

The greatest despondency pervaded all classes, many despairing of ever receiving 救済. Yet day after day how many anxious 注目する，もくろむs were directed to the signal 駅／配置する in the hope of seeing the 願望（する）d 旗 hoisted.

It was not until the third of June the 願望（する）d signal was hoisted, and truly we may say every pulse throbbed with joyous excitement; the whole place was in the greatest commotion.

The 知事 and some of his officers in boats went 負かす／撃墜する the harbour to welcome the arrival, which, instead of a 蓄える／店 ship, 証明するd to be the 輸送（する） Lady Juliana, with two hundred and twenty-two 女性（の） 罪人／有罪を宣告するs. She had been ten months making the voyage, and brought the melancholy 知能 of the loss of H. M. S. 後見人, with two years' 準備／条項s, 着せる／賦与するing, etc., for the 植民地. She had touched at the Cape to refresh, and had there taken on board a 広大な／多数の／重要な number of fruit trees and other 工場／植物s, as 井戸／弁護士席 as seven horses, sixteen cows, two bulls, a number of sheep, goats, and two deer. After leaving the Cape, and when in lat. 45° 54' south, and long. 41° 30' east, on the 23rd of December, she struck upon an ice island, and received so much 傷害 that they were compelled to throw overboard the greatest part of her 貨物. Many on board 恐れるing the 大型船 would 創立者 preferred 信用ing themselves in the boats to remaining in the ship; and of the five boats which left her, only one reached the land in safety, and she was 選ぶd up by a French 大型船 after many days' sailing. The 後見人, however, reached the Cape, with the remaining 準備／条項s in safety; and seventy-five バーレル／樽s of flour were 今後d to this 植民地 by the Lady Juliana. The 準備／条項s received by the 輸送（する） were only 十分な to 令状 an 増加する of one 続けざまに猛撃する and a half of flour to their 週刊誌 rations, and it was not till the arrival, on the 20th of June, of the 蓄える／店 ship Justitian that the 十分な ration was again 問題／発行するd, and 労働 (which had for some time been 一時停止するd) was again 再開するd. On the 26th and 28th of June three other 輸送（する）s arrived with 罪人／有罪を宣告するs in a deplorable 明言する／公表する, two hundred and seventy-four having died on the passage.

In the month of July the 知事 原因（となる）d the town of Parramatta to be laid out, and houses were すぐに 築くd; several 認めるs of land were {page 48} also made in the 周辺 to emancipated 罪人／有罪を宣告するs, and to some of the 海洋s and sailors lately belonging to the Sirius, 指示／教授／教育s to this 影響 having been received by the last について言及するd 大型船s. 認めるs were authorised to be made to 非，不，無-（売買）手数料，委託（する）／委員会／権限d officers of one hundred and thirty acres, if 選び出す／独身, or one hundred and fifty, if married; to 私的なs eighty acres, if 選び出す／独身, and one hundred, if married; and to emancipated 罪人／有罪を宣告するs, thirty acres, if 選び出す／独身, and fifty, if married, and ten acres 付加 for each child they had at the time of 認めるing.

In the latter part of this month, as a midshipman and three sailors of the Sirius were returning up the harbour in a boat, when 近づく Pinchgut Island, a 鯨 rose so 近づく them as almost to 押し寄せる／沼地 the boat with the swell; after 保釈（金）ing out the water they pulled for the shore, but the 鯨 again rose underneath the boat, and 転覆するd it, by which three of them were 溺死するd. The monster did not 影響 its escape from the harbour, but was some time afterwards 岸に in Manly Cove, and was killed by the natives. On the 7th of September the 知事, whilst superintending the erection of a column at the Signal 駅／配置する on the South 長，率いる, 観察するd a number of the natives 組み立てる／集結するd 近づく the 鯨 at Manley Beach, and having been 知らせるd that Benilong (a native who had been in some 手段 domesticated, but had recently escaped) was amongst them, he took an 武装した party for the 目的 of 再度捕まえるing him; upon 上陸 they 設立する Benilong; and during the interview a native threw a spear with such 軍隊 that it entered above the collar bone of the 知事, and the barb protruded at the 支援する; the spear was broken off, and upon his arrival at Sydney the other part was carefully 抽出するd. 恐れるs were entertained for his safety, but by 広大な／多数の／重要な care he 回復するd.

In October, after an absence of six months and two days, the 供給（する） returned from Batavia, and was followed in a short time by a Dutch 大型船 雇うd at Batavia for the conveyance of the remaining 蓄える／店s. Their arrival was most opportune, for already had the former 蓄える／店s become nearly {page 49} exhausted; and the 天候 存在 very hot, and no rain having fallen since June, the 刈るs were in a very sickly 条件, and the prospects of 収穫 any thing but encouraging.

The Storehouse at Parramatta, 100 feet by 24, and the Wharf, were 完全にするd, and about thirty cottages or huts 築くd by the end of the year; and, in Sydney, another 蓄える／店 of equal dimensions, and in a line with that already 築くd on the east 味方する of the Cove, was 開始するd.

CHAPTER .

THE ROYAL HOTEL; GEORGE STREET; THE POLICE OFFICE.

This has been truly called the age of 活動／戦闘, and of quick and 早い events. In our previous 一時期／支部 we 述べるd the 明言する／公表する of things in 1790, when, at one period, there was not in the 植民地 four months' 準備／条項s for the entire 全住民, even on the most 減ずるd 規模; and when several persons had 死なせる／死ぬd of inanition before the arrival of the 輸送（する）s from the Cape, bringing part of the 蓄える／店s saved from the 後見人 and now, by a 一打／打撃 of the enchanter's 病弱なd, we find the scene 速く changed, and ourselves introducing our readers to a far different 明言する／公表する of things:--our denizens of the pasturage--plains boiling 負かす／撃墜する into tallow 十分な meat, per 年, to 料金d nearly half a million of persons, because we have not mouths to eat it: and our denizens of the city luxuriating in all the delicacies which the 井戸／弁護士席 任命するd hotels and restaurants of Sydney afford on the most princely 規模. Let us ask our readers to turn from the days of 1790-1, when our first brick building was begun and finished, and ちらりと見ること at the engraving which we 現在の of the 王室の Hotel, George Street, within whose hospitable 塀で囲むs the 餓死するing 政権 of 知事 Phillip is now regarded as one {page 50} of the bygones of 疑問 and wonder. Few things strike new arrivals with more surprise than the 外部の 外見 and the inner 任命s of this 抱擁する building--its 範囲s of balconies without, its 迷宮／迷路 of 回廊（地帯）s within. We may 観察する that the 現在の structure was built on the 廃虚s of the old 王室の Hotel, which was 築くd by Mr. Barnett 徴収する, to whom the 植民地 stands indebted for the legalised introduction of the 合法的 演劇 into New South むちの跡s; for although, so 早期に as 1796, Plays were 成し遂げるd here, the peculiar circumstances of the 植民地's 'penality' 妨げるd the 地元の 当局 from 許可／制裁ing the 正規の／正選手 業績／成果s of the 行う／開催する／段階. It was on the old English ボクシング-day, 26th December, 1832, that, in Mr. Barnett 徴収する's Saloon, "money was 公然と taken at the doors," on which occasion Douglas Jerrold was the dramatist 栄誉（を受ける）d with the pas, his "黒人／ボイコット-注目する，もくろむd Susan" 存在 the play; whilst Billy Moncrieff's "Monsieur Tonson" was selected for the farce. This, however, is not the place where we may ぐずぐず残る over 劇の 事件／事情／状勢s. We accordingly pass to the time when the disciples of Thespis, having 除去するd to a more spacious 寺, the old 王室の was again 充てるd to Hotel 目的s, and, under the able 管理／経営 of Mr. 誘発するs, received the 長，指導者 株 of the patronage of our 植民／開拓者s and 無断占拠者s, who, "on 商売／仕事 or 楽しみ bent," paid their welcome 定期刊行物 visits to our metropolis. From 1836 to 1840, a period of dazzling but 誤った 繁栄, Mr. 誘発するs 統括するd over the 歓待s of the old Hotel; but on the night of the 17th of March, in the latter year, the whole of the building was destroyed by 解雇する／砲火／射撃. A drunken carter, who had been indulging in copious libations to St. Patrick, amused himself by smoking a 麻薬を吸う in an 隣接するing stable, belonging to Mr. Blanch; and the straw 点火（する）ing, the 巨大な stack of buildings was speedily in 炎上s. Mr. Joseph Wyatt, the proprietor of the Victoria Theatre, was at this time the owner of this 所有物／資産／財産, which was valued at &続けざまに猛撃する;12,000, but unfortunately only insured for &続けざまに猛撃する;3000. Mr. 誘発するs' 所有物／資産／財産, valued at &続けざまに猛撃する;5000, was not insured at all. The total {page 51} 損失 was 概算の at &続けざまに猛撃する;20,000; and 陸軍大佐 Barney 宣言するd that if the 勝利，勝つd had 始める，決める in freshly, either from the south or west, scarcely any human means could have 妨げるd the 破壊 of 所有物／資産／財産 to the 量 of half a million 英貨の／純銀の. A grand ball was taking place at 政府 House when the 解雇する／砲火／射撃 broke out; and 陸軍大佐 Barney, Capt. Collins, Lieut. Lugard, and other Officers, 急ぐd out in their gay attire and lent their 援助（する） in 消滅させるing the 炎上s. By levelling several tenements in the 後部 of Mr. Belmore's 住居, Lieut. Lugard, in all probability, saved the Victoria Theatre, and also Mr. Nash's 前提s, from 存在 消費するd; and 陸軍大佐 Barney 心配するing, from a slight 微風 to the southward, that the 炎上s from the Hotel might communicate to Macdonald's buildings, had a train ready laid to 爆発する the two first houses, and その為に save the 残り／休憩（する） from 破壊: but this was （判決などを）下すd unnecessary by the providential なぎing of the 勝利，勝つd. From Mr. Wyatt the 料金-simple passed into the 手渡すs of Mr. John Terry Hughes, who built the structure which we are now about to 述べる.

When George the Fourth's favourite architect built the Church of All Souls in Langham Place, Regent Street, there was a passable joke 現在の, about its 'order' 存在 'Mr. Nash's 肯定的な order'; and, 前提ing that Mr. J. T. Hughes was his own architect when the 巨大な stack of 石／投石する and 支持を得ようと努めるd-work was raised, which now, under the 肩書を与える of the 王室の Hotel, 占領するs nearly an acre of ground in George Street, Sydney, we 始める，決める out with the 自白 that no 'comparatives' or 'superlatives,' that we can 命令（する）, are 適する to a faithful description of this "Curiosity of 植民地の Architecture."

With a frontage of 72 feet, and a depth of 170, the exterior or naked 石／投石する 塀で囲むing of the 王室の Hotel is 極端に plain. Neither architectural nor ornamental character of any 肉親，親類d is assumed, albeit the 前線 is enclosed by a 一連の balconies supported on Roman columns. The building is five stories in 高さ, with a 地階 story used for cellars 主として, {page 52} in one part whereof an imitation of the London 'Shades' has been 試みる／企てるd with 部分的な／不平等な success. The roof of the main building is flat, covered with lead, and is surrounded with a plain open embrasure, which ill （許可，名誉などを）与えるs with the Roman style of the 一連の balconies in the 前線. These balconies, entered from and on a level with the different 床に打ち倒すs of the building, are wide and spacious, forming a 罰金 promenade in hot and 蒸し暑い 天候; and, giving shade and 避難所 to the 隣接するing rooms, are admirably adapted to a 気候 like ours. Still we cannot 差し控える from adverting to the recklessness which (with the 運命／宿命 of the old 王室の in memory) 建設するd this 巨大な frontage of 支持を得ようと努めるd! With the exception of the lower columns, the whole of the 範囲 of balconies is composed of this combustible 構成要素.--A 味方する 入り口 leads us into an open quadrangular 法廷，裁判所, 据える about the centre of the buildings; and here again we find a 一連の flights of 木造の stairs, 上がるing to the different stories of the building, with spacious 上陸s or 事業／計画（する）ing balconies, supported on 木造の pilasters. And here are to be 設立する a number of large apartments desolate, unfinished, and perfectly useless, 存在 at an absurd distance from the main part of the Hotel. To this wilderness of 石／投石する and 支持を得ようと努めるd we would 特に direct the attention of the young 建設業者 who would 願望（する） to 避ける the 'Hughesionian' style of architecture.--But now let us 行為／行う him to the main 入り口 in George Street, where the excellent 元気づける of Mr. 誘発するs tempts even the hypercritical in art to be blind to the follies of the architect. The 主要な／長／主犯 vestibule is of a good and appropriate size and depth: the 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業, which is of polygonal form, and enclosed with glass sashes all 一連の会議、交渉／完成する, 存在 at the extreme end. Capacious flights of stairs, 井戸／弁護士席 formed and 平易な of 接近, run up both from the 権利 and left of the 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業. Two grand saloons, nearly 100 feet long, 占領する a 部分 of the south 味方する (the one すぐに above the other). In width and 高さ they are sadly disproportionate to their length; and, as many of our readers will 収容する／認める who have visited the lower room (which {page 53} has been used for Concerts, Bazaars, and Public 会合s), it is 極端に ill adapted for any of these 目的s.

However, in the centre of the main building are to be 設立する several 罰金 控訴s of rooms (so far as area and space are 関心d); and these, together with spacious 回廊（地帯）s, whence run 非常に長い passages, with a number of 選び出す／独身 寄宿舎s fitted up with every necessary 慰安, impress new corners with high notions of the 資源s of a city, which can support 設立s of so gigantic a design as this. The kitchen, and other culinary offices, are in the 地階 story; they are dark and ill-ふさわしい for the 目的s ーするつもりであるd, and are by no means 両立できる with the 必要物／必要条件s of an Hotel of this magnitude.

含むing the large saloons, the billiard-room, and 主要な／長／主犯 coffee-room, the design of the Hotel 含む／封じ込めるs nearly one hundred apartments, many of which, by the way, now unfinished and の近くにd up, are without the means of 存在 lighted, except by 人工的な means! With Mr. Hughes's system of building we are not 熟知させるd, but we 推定する that he never could have placed upon paper, a 計画（する） of the 抱擁する 集まり of cumbersomeness which he has piled in George-street? One half of the money wasted thereupon, would have 十分であるd for a building worthy of the finest street in Europe.

We are glad to be enabled to 追加する to these strictures, that the 内部の of the 王室の Hotel is now を受けるing かなりの 修理s, in so far as relates to the habitable 部分s. The grand saloon, hitherto unopened, is to be furnished and fitted up, so as to 供給する for a want 一般に felt by disciples of Apollo and Terpsichore:--indeed by all parties, desirous of 組み立てる／集結するing in large numbers, for 目的s of festivity or 商売／仕事. The 塀で囲むs, 床に打ち倒すs, and roof of this part of the building, will be 強化するd by means of a number of 相当な アイロンをかける columns, so as to 縮める the bearings of the 激しい girders, of which we have already complained. さまざまな other 改良s are in contemplation; and when we 明言する／公表する that these {page 54} important 作品 have been confided to Mr. James Hume, our readers will join with us, in 予報するing that the 王室の Hotel will soon 現在の, in reality, all those 施設s which its eccentric and enthusiastic projector imagined he had 申し込む／申し出d in 築くing it.

We may 明言する／公表する, in 結論, that Mr. Daniel Cooper of London, is now the owner of this 広範囲にわたる 所有物／資産／財産.

George Street:--the main artery through which the 決定的な stream of 商業 flows to the remotest parts of the 植民地, 延長するs in an 無傷の line from Dawes' Point, the northern extremity of the City, to the old （死傷者）数 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業, at the southern, a distance of two miles, and is continued nearly another mile under the 指名する of Parramatta Street, connecting the 広範囲にわたる and populous 郊外s of Chippendale and Redfern with the City, and forming the grand approach from the southern and western 地区s. The newcomer cannot fail of 存在 surprised with the bustle and 活気／アニメーション that pervades this street; numberless Omnibuses in constant 動議, Hackney Carriages, Coaches, Gigs, Waggons, and every description of 乗り物, from the humble "shay cart" to the 正規の／正選手 four in 手渡す, passing and re-passing; with now and then the 抱擁する bullock dray, laden with wool or other produce, and drawn by eight or ten 巨大な bullocks, wending its devious way to the Merchant's 蓄える／店s; gives character to the scene, and stamps it 植民地の. That 部分 of George Street, between the Queen's Wharf and King Street, has already been illustrated by our first five plates, and now after having rambled through a 部分 of King and Pitt Streets, we return to it again, and the eleventh and twelfth plates 代表する all the buildings between King Street and the Police Office, 開始するing at King Street; Mr. Woolley's Ironmongery 蓄える／店s and Show Rooms (以前は the 私的な 住居 of William Hutchinson, Esq.), first （人命などを）奪う，主張する attention, the main building surrounded as it is by the shops 直面するing the street, would hardly be noticed by a stranger; but its 内部の 陳列する，発揮するs in rich profusion, every article of 高級な, taste, or 公共事業（料金）／有用性, the 貿易（する） can 供給（する）.

We have also in this locality, the 設立s of all the 主要な／長／主犯 Ironmongers;--直面するing Mr. Woolley's is that of Mr. R. M. Robey, a spacious and ornamental building, 築くd some fourteen years since, by Mr. Grose; a few doors その上の on, we have Mr. C. Scott's, and Mr. R. 0. Reilly's; and next to the 王室の Hotel, Messrs. Harper and Moore's; a little その上の on, Messrs. Hawley and Co.; and after crossing Market Street, the 設立 of the late Mr. L. Iredale, opposite the Market. After passing Messrs. S. Peek and Co.'s Grocery and Tea 倉庫／問屋 (which like Mr. Woolley's, must be 診察するd, to discover its 広大な extent), we come to a 範囲 of 高度に respectable houses, 延長するing to the 王室の Hotel; 含むing the 流行の／上流の Tailoring 設立s of H. Hayes and Co.; and Mr. Alderman Broughton; the White Horse Tavern and Coach Office; and the Hot and Vapour Baths of Mr. Robinson.

At the 支援する of Messrs. Harper and Moore's, is the Sydney Foundry, an 広範囲にわたる 設立 belonging to the Messrs. Russell; a little その上の on is the Whip Manufactory of Mr. J. Scott, the only one in the 植民地, where every variety of that article is made fully equal to the best London whips.

The 隣接するing 相当な and elegant houses, the 所有物／資産／財産 of Mr. M. Joseph, have been 築くd only some seven or eight years, the 場所／位置s having been 以前 占領するd by low 天候-boarded cottages; and the whole 列／漕ぐ／騒動 of houses 延長するing to Market Street, has been renovated or rebuilt, within that period. The houses opposite, 占領するd by Mr. Titterton, and the 貯金' Bank, are creditable 見本／標本s of our street architecture.

The 貯金' Bank, whose offices 占領する the ground 床に打ち倒す of one of these houses, (the upper part 存在 the offices of Messrs. Carr and Owen, Solicitors), is an 会・原則 that shows at once, most 明確に and incontestibly, the 繁栄 of the working classes in this 植民地, and the 広大な／多数の／重要な advantages such people have in emigrating hither.

It must be borne in mind we have no Poor 法律s, or even need of them, for except by extreme old age, sickness, or some other of "the ills that flesh is 相続人 to," we have few suppliants for 救済, and these are 供給するd for by the voluntary 出資／貢献s of the 国民s. The honest and industrious, no 事柄 of what calling, are enabled to earn a good maintainance, and also to lay by something for the day of sickness or adversity, whilst many who have landed upon these shores destitute, have risen to comparative affluence.

The 広大な／多数の／重要な advantages afforded to the Operatives, by such an 会・原則, have long been 定評のある at Home, but it was not until the year 1832, a 貯金' Bank was 設立するd in Sydney. Since which time, however, it has 徐々に 延長するd its 影響（力）, 蓄積するing 資本／首都 for thousands who, most probably, would さもなければ have wasted or spent it.

The 管理／経営 of the 事件／事情／状勢s of the Bank is vested (by 行為／法令／行動する of 会議), in eighteen Trustees; His Excellency the 知事 存在 大統領, the Honourable the 植民地の 長官, 副大統領, and George Miller, Esq.,. Accountant; to whose able direction in the 詳細（に述べる）s of the 商売／仕事 of the Bank, much of its success must be せいにするd.

By the last 年４回の balance, it appears the deposits had 増加するd to 上向きs of &続けざまに猛撃する;170,000; and as it was impossible to find profitable and 安全な 投資 for so large an 量 of 資本／首都, a 広大な／多数の／重要な 部分 remained 失業した, その結果 the 率 of 利益／興味 payable to the depositors, was 減ずるd to two and a half per cent. per 年. By a 最近の 行為／法令／行動する of the 法律を制定する 会議, the Trustees were 権力を与えるd to 配置する／処分する／したい気持ちにさせる of a 部分 of their 蓄積するd 資本／首都, by way of 貸付金s to the 会社／団体s of Sydney and Melbourne, for the general 改良 of these Cities; and it is その上の 提案するd to 雇う the 利用できる 基金s in the 形式 of 事業／計画（する）d 鉄道s, the 政府 存在 責任がある the monies so 前進するd; an 増加するd 率 of 利益／興味 will therefore be insured; the city 改善するd; and a 国家の 利益 derived from this unassuming yet {page 57} invaluable 会・原則.

George Street, 56A

Opposite the 王室の Hotel is Mr. Cetta's Picture でっちあげる，人を罪に陥れる and Looking Glass Manufactory, from whence all the 隣人ing 植民地s are almost 排他的に 供給（する）d; the Carving and Gilding 遂行する／発効させるd at this 設立 is of the highest order, and 長所s the 広範囲にわたる patronage it receives.

At the corner of Market Street, with the 前線 in George Street, stands the "Waterloo 蓄える／店s," a spacious brick building, 築くd some twenty years since by Mr. Daniel Cooper; it then stood alone at the corner of the Cattle Market, and was without question the best building in the City, and even in the 現在の day, when the spirit and 企業 of the colonists have 原因（となる）d the erection of many very excellent buildings, it still 持つ／拘留するs its 階級 amongst the best. The 商売／仕事 of this 設立 is 行為／行うd by Mr. D. Cooper, Junior, (the son of the above 指名するd gentleman) on a very 延長するd 規模. Country 蓄える／店s and 植民／開拓者s are here 供給（する）d with every thing they 要求する: ワインs, Spirits, Ales and Porter, Grocery, and Drapery Goods, Slops, and 着せる／賦与するing, Ironmongery, etc., in infinite variety.

Passing onwards we have a 延長／続編 of good shops, and 直面するing them the Market Sheds (which will be fully 述べるd in a 未来 number), 延長する southward to the Police Office.

The Police Office, which forms the 支配する of one of our illustrations, was 築くd for a Market House, from the design of Mr. Greenaway, and as far as its exterior is 関心d, is certainly creditable to the 植民地. The Portico on the south 味方する or 前線, with four Grecian 中心存在s supporting a pediment and roof, forms the 入り口, with doors 主要な into the 法廷，裁判所s on either 味方する.

The building surmounted by its Cupola and Lantern rising from the centre to a かなりの 高さ, forms a 目だつ 反対する, 明白な from all parts of the City, and the Country for many miles 一連の会議、交渉／完成する. The 内部の 手はず／準備 however, are both unsightly and incommodious, and anything {page 58} but realize the 予期s formed by the 外部の 外見 of the building.

Its （資金の）充当／歳出 is of course for the 演習 and 配当 of 司法（官）, and is daily opened for this 目的 (at 9 o'clock, a.m.), before two or more 治安判事s. There are besides the two open 法廷，裁判所s of 司法（官）, several other apartments, 構成するing, the 上級の 治安判事's 私的な Room, and those 始める，決める apart for the Clerks of the 設立, as offices. Captain J. L. Innes, the 現在の 上級の Police 治安判事, is the 後継者 of Mr. Windeyer, who retired from office after many years' active and able service, on account of his 前進するd age and 拒絶する／低下するing health （判決などを）下すing him unfit for the その上の 起訴 of so responsible, arduous, and harrassing an office.

Captain Innes also 持つ／拘留するs the 状況／情勢s of Commissioner of Police, and Visiting 治安判事 to the Gaol, and 罪人／有罪を宣告する 設立 at Cockatoo Island; and in the efficient 発射する／解雇する of his public 義務s, he has 伸び（る）d the 尊敬（する）・点 and esteem of the 国民s 捕まらないで. Laurence Miles, Esq., is Junior Police 治安判事.

The 設立 consists also of one 長，指導者 Clerk, seven Junior Clerks, and an Interpreter. The City Police 軍隊 含む／封じ込めるs four 視察官s, twelve Sergeants, and seventy-six Constables; and the 地区 軍隊, one 視察官, one Sergeant, and fifteen Constables, all of whom wear the same 衣装 as the London Police 軍隊, and are paid by the 政府. The Police 軍隊 一般に 召集（する） for 査察 every morning in the yard, after the 商売／仕事 of the 法廷，裁判所 is 結論するd.

The old Police Office was the building now used as the General 地位，任命する Office, the 現在の one not having been appropriated as such until about the year 1830. It is in contemplation to make some alterations and 改良s in the 内部の of the 現在の building, and we must 自白する, not before they are 要求するd, for it can hardly be 推定する／予想するd that a building {page 59} 築くd for a Market House, and used for some time as a 蓄える／店, should be at all suitable for its 現在の uses.

CHAPTER XIII.

SCOTS' CHURCH.--YORK STREET.

The Scots' Church of St. Andrew's, more 一般に known as Dr. Lang's Church, stands on the southern extremity of Church Hill, 近づく the 入り口 to the old 軍の 兵舎, and in the 即座の 周辺 of the Episcopalian Church of St. Phillip's. It is a commodious and 井戸／弁護士席 finished building, and with the gallery 有能な of 持つ／拘留するing 1000 persons. Thi s was the first Scots' Church 築くd in the 植民地, for previous to the arrival of the Rev. Dr. Lang, May 23, 1823, there had not been a Presbyterian 大臣: he 開始するd his 義務s in the small chapel in Prince Street (now used by the Wesleyans), on the 8th June, in the same year, and continued to 成し遂げる service によれば the 儀式s of the Scottish Church, in the same place of worship until the 完成 of the 現在の edifice.

Soon after his arrival in the 植民地, a congregation of Scots' Presbyterians was formed, and すぐに afterwards it was 提案するd to 築く a Church in Sydney, and 上向きs of &続けざまに猛撃する;700 was subscribed for that 目的 in the course of a few days.

The 委員会 of 管理／経営 演説（する）／住所d a 記念の to the 知事, Sir Thomas Brisbane, who was himself a Scotsman and a Presbyterian, praying 援助 from the 政府 in 援助（する） of their 請け負うing, such 援助 having been 以前 afforded to the Roman カトリック教徒s of the 植民地. To this 記念の a most disrespectful reply was sent 辞退するing the sought for 援助（する）. The 記念の and reply having been published in the 植民地の Newspapers, after a time 設立する their way home, and were afterwards {page 60} copied into the Morning Chronicle, together with some stringent 発言／述べるs from the Editor (himself a Scotsman). These 発言／述べるs having fallen under the 注目する，もくろむ of the 国務長官 for the 植民地s, Earl Bathurst, and feeling the 不正 of the whole 訴訟／進行, spontaneously directed Sir Thomas Brisbane すぐに to 前進する one third of the 概算の cost of the erection, from the 植民地の 財務省 and afterwards その上の directed that a salary of &続けざまに猛撃する;300 per 年, should be paid to the officiating 大臣, "regretting" at the same time "that his Excellency had put to their 保護監察 members of the Church of Scotland in the 植民地, the 設立するd Church of one of the most enlightened and virtuous 部分s of the Empire."

It is but 司法（官） to the 知事, however, to 明言する／公表する, that previous to the arrival of the above despatches, he had perceived his error, and afterwards did everything in his 力／強力にする to atone for the 傷害 he had occasioned; and although he had 原因（となる）d his 指名する to be erased from the 初めの 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる） of 加入者s, he now 取って代わるd it, and to show his zeal for his country's 宗教, laid the 創立／基礎 石／投石する himself, on the first of July, 1824.

We cannot の近くに this 支配する without 表明するing our 賞賛 of the persevering zeal of the Rev. Dr. Lang, who has 充てるd his exalted talents, his 私的な 所有物／資産／財産, and so large a 部分 of his life (now 上向きs of a ４半期/4分の1 of a century), to the 進歩 of 宗教, and general 改良 of the 植民地 at large. We are not unmindful that in many ways his 行為／行う has been reprehensible, and that he has frequently incurred the displeasure even of his own countrymen, but "to err is human," and his faults have 一般に been errors of 裁判／判断: there are few we believe will 否定する his grand 目的（とする） has ever been the 進歩 of Australia, his 可決する・採択するd country.

King Street and York Street, Plate 60A

York Street is a short street, running north and south, 平行の with George Street, 延長するing from the south 入り口 of the 軍の 兵舎, to the old Burial Ground, and is intersected at 権利 angles by {page 61} King Street West and Market Street; from its central position it might be 推定する／予想するd to 所有する more importance than it 現実に does; but when the 熟視する／熟考するd 改良s in the Barrack Square (the whole of which is about 存在 laid out for sale) are 完全にするd, it will become a 主要な thoroughfare, and the value of 所有物／資産／財産 in this locality will be その結果 much 高めるd. Entering York Street from the Old 兵舎 we 会合，会う at each corner (as is 一般に the 事例／患者 in Sydney) a Public House with open doors, 招待するing the thirsty traveller to refresh. We pass on, and on the 権利 手渡す at a short distance stands the "Masonic Hall" kept by Mr. J. Entwisle. The 前線, which is of two stories, with verandah and balcony supported by columns, is of a plain and unassuming 外見, and 伝えるs no idea of the extent of the 内部の 手はず／準備 and accommodation. A few years since this house was the 所有物／資産／財産 of the Freemasons, and the general 訴える手段／行楽地 of the brotherhood of that 古代の and honorable order, whose 宿泊するs were held here--but in consequence of 増加する of 商売／仕事 and the 所有物／資産／財産's 存在 sold to other parties, the 宿泊するs have been 除去するd and it is now the Masonic Hall only in 指名する.

Since the change in the proprietory, Mr. Entwisle has made 広範囲にわたる alterations in the 後部 of the 初めの house,--having 築くd a splendid Saloon, surrounded by 私的な rooms on the ground 床に打ち倒す and on the first 床に打ち倒す by bed-rooms, 主要な from a gallery which encompasses it and connects it with the main building.

Mr. Entwisle has 得るd かなりの celebrity for the excellent ordinary served up in the Saloon at one o'clock, which is very respectably and numerously …に出席するd by not いっそう少なく than eighty or ninety persons daily.

On the opposite 味方する of the Street すぐに 直面するing the Masonic Hall, is a large brick built house with a willow tree in 前線, which was for many years, the 私的な 住居 of J. Raymond, Esq., Postmaster General, and is now 占領するd by Mr. Stewart, Veterinary 外科医. The 広範囲にわたる 支援する 前提s belonging to this house are 井戸／弁護士席 adapted for the {page 62} use to which they are appropriated, すなわち, a Horse Bazaar, where, after the style of Tattersall's in London, are held 定期刊行物 sales of Horses, etc., by auction.

Reader! 言及する to the plate in the 13th number, and 観察する that unpretending, but comfortable cottage 隣接するing the Horse Bazaar. 示す it 井戸／弁護士席: that is one of the few perfect 見本／標本s of 植民地の 国内の Architecture still to be met with in Sydney, which have hitherto escaped 存在 consigned to oblivion, and have not yet given way to the march of 改良, 課すd by the 現在の building 行為／法令／行動する. The remaining houses in this 部分 of York Street, are characterised by no remarkable architectural beauty, but 占領するd by a 商売／仕事-like class of persons diligently engaged in their several avocations.

CHAPTER XIV.

WESLEYAN CENTENARY CHAPEL, YORK--STREET; AND JEW'S SYNAGOGUE.

THE Wesleyan Centenary Chapel 代表するd in one of our plates, is one of those few good buildings, of which the Wesleyans 特に, and the 国民s 一般に have 推論する／理由 to be proud; indeed few of the 地方の towns in England can 誇る of a building equal to this. It was 築くd by Mr. Jacob Inder, from a design by Mr. Josiah Atwool. The 創立／基礎-石／投石する was laid by the Rev. J. M'Kenny, on the 24th of February, 1840, and the building was opened for Divine Worship on the 14th of the same month, 1844. The 前線 is built of dressed freestone, having a rusticated 地階, and the portico with four columns of the Doric order, supporting the pediment etc., is approached by a flight of steps 延長するing {page 63} its entire width. The 団体／死体 of the building is of brick, 延長するing backwards eighty feet, with a frontage to the street of fifty feet. The 地階 is divided into two spacious School-rooms, 有能な of affording accommodation for five hundred children.

The 内部の 手はず／準備 are in the usual style 可決する・採択するd in England. An aisle 主要な 負かす／撃墜する on either 味方する, with pews 延長するing to the 塀で囲むs, and 占領するing the entire centre. The pulpit which is octagonal, with geometrical staircase 上がるing from the aisle, is a very clever piece of workmanship. The reading desk is in the 前線 of the pulpit; and at the 支援する, in the 休会, stands the 組織／臓器 gallery, with semicircular 前線. A gallery is now in course of erection, 延長するing 一連の会議、交渉／完成する the remaining 部分 of the building, the パネル盤s in 前線 of which, 同様に as the other fittings are of the choicest 見本／標本s of 植民地の cedar, and the workmanship equal to any at Home.

When the galleries are finished the Chapel is 概算の to 含む／封じ込める twelve hundred persons. The cost of erection we are 知らせるd has been little short of seven thousand 続けざまに猛撃するs. The 大臣s now officiating in the Sydney 地区 are, the Rev. W. Boyce, General Superintendent of the 使節団, in this and the 隣人ing 植民地s; Rev. Mr. Turner, for many years in New Zealand, Launceston, and this City; Rev. Messrs. 吊りくさび and Harris.

The Wesleyans are 速く 伸び（る）ing ground in this 植民地, and it must be gratifying to sincere Christians of every denomination, to see a progression so 望ましい. Thirty years since they had no public place of worship, their first chapel in Macquarie Street, having been opened July 1st. 1821, from which period their numbers have been 刻々と and 速く 増加するing, so that now in the City and 郊外s there are no いっそう少なく than ten chapels, all 井戸／弁護士席 …に出席するd. The last 国勢（人口）調査 returns show the number of Wesleyans in Sydney to be 2128. And in the whole 植民地 7935, 存在 an 増加する of 4700 during the last five years.

JEWISH SYNAGOGUE.--The erection of this building was …に出席するd at first by many difficulties, which have been happily surmounted, by the incessant 成果／努力s of a mere handful of people. After several ineffectual 試みる／企てるs, 認めるs of land were 適用するd for and 得るd from the 政府, but the authorised 場所／位置s were never 受託するd, in consequence of their inconvenience. At length on the 3rd of November, 1841, the 現在の 場所／位置 was 購入（する）d at a public sale, for and on に代わって of the Congregation, and vested in the 指名するs of several Trustees. A Building 委員会 having been 任命するd, a 計画（する） 現在のd by Mr. Hume was 認可するd of, and the 現在の beautiful building was 築くd, at a cost of three thousand six hundred 続けざまに猛撃するs. It was opened for the 業績／成果 of Divine worship after the Hebrew form, in the presence of a 非常に／多数の congregation, on the 2nd of April, 1844, the consecration service 存在 成し遂げるd in a most efficient manner by Mr. Isaacs, the Reader, 補助装置d by Mr. Solomon Phillips and others.

The 記録，記録的な／記録するs of the 早期に period of the Hebrew 宗教 in this 植民地, are not very authentic, but from enquiries made, it appears that in 1817, there were about twenty Hebrews in the 植民地, and those little 詩（を作る）d in the 約束 of their ancestors: notwithstanding this they formed themselves into a Society, and raised a subscription for the interment of their dead. At this period the first Hebrew funeral took place. From 1817 to 1820 the Society continue in 操作／手術, 会合 occasionally to 規制する 財政上の 事件／事情／状勢s. In 1820, a person 指名するd Joel Joseph died, and on the 使用／適用 of Mr. A. Levi to the Rev. Dr. Cowper, the 権利-手渡す corner of the Christian Burial Ground was allotted to the Hebrews for the interment of their dead.

From the year 1820 to 1828 the Society became extinct, and no 試みる／企てる was made to 生き返らせる it except when a death occurred, which did not happen above five times during that period. The worldly 条件 of the Hebrews in the 植民地 改善するd かなり in 1827 and 1828, in consequence of {page 65} the 広大な／多数の／重要な influx of respectable merchants during that period, and this with other circumstances had raised the Hebrews in the estimation of their fellow-colonists.

York Street, Plate 64B

About this period Mr. P. J. Cohen having 申し込む／申し出d the use of his house for the 目的, Divine Worship was 成し遂げるd for the first time in this 植民地, によれば the Hebrew form, and was continued 定期的に every Sabbath and Holiday. From some difference of opinion then 存在するing amongst the members of this 約束, Divine Service was also 成し遂げるd occasionally in a room 雇うd by Messrs. A. Elias, and James Simmons. In this 条件 everything connected with their 宗教 remained, until the arrival of the Rev. Aaron Levi, in the year 1830; he had been despatched on a special 使節団 to the 植民地, by the 長，指導者 Rabbi of the British Jews, the Rev. Solomon Hirschell, and 存在 one of the Beth Din, or Rabbies, and duly 信じる／認定／派遣するd, 訂正するd many of the errors and 乱用s then 存在するing, and endeavoured by his judicious 管理／経営, to instil into the minds of the Hebrew community, a taste for the 宗教 of their fathers; his 成果／努力s 証明するd successful, a Roll of the 法律 (Seiphor Torah) was 購入（する）d from him by subscription, Hebrew 調書をとる／予約するs of 祈り were also 供給（する）d by him to those who had no previous 適切な時期 of 所有するing them. Divine Service was more 定期的に 行為／行うd, and from this time may be 時代遅れの the 設立 of the ユダヤ人の 宗教 in Sydney. In the year 1832 all the members of the Hebrew 約束, 居住（者） in the 植民地, formed themselves into one Society, selected a 委員会 to manage their 世俗的な 事件／事情／状勢s, and 任命するd J. B. Montefiore, Esq., their 大統領，／社長. He 得るd from the 政府 a 際立った 認める of land for a burial ground (the same now used as such), and 築くd thereon a house for devotional 目的s.

Upon the 創立／基礎 of the Society, it was 設立する necessary to engage a larger place for worship, and the room now used by Mr. Gordon as a 蓄える／店, on the north 味方する of 橋（渡しをする）-street, was used as a 一時的な Synagogue, {page 66} and 指名するd Beth Tephiloh or the House of 祈り. In this year (1832) the first ユダヤ人の marriage was solemnized, that of Moses Joseph, Esq., and 行方不明になる Nathan, the 儀式 was 成し遂げるd by Mr. P. J. Cohen, who was duly authorised by letter from the 長，指導者 Rabbi in England, and which was also 記録，記録的な／記録するd in the office of the 植民地の 長官. In the year 1835 Mr. Rose and family arrived, 耐えるing 信任状 from the 長，指導者 Rabbi, and was engaged as Reader, Mowell, and Shouchatt, to the congregation, the 儀式s of the ユダヤ人の Church having been 以前 成し遂げるd by Messrs. Lear and Hyams.

At length the Hebrews became so 非常に／多数の and respectable a 部分 of the community, that it was thought necessary to 築く a new synagogue, subscriptions 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる）s were opened, and to which many 指名するs, belonging to さまざまな denominations of Christians, were 追加するd, 陳列する，発揮するing a liberality rarely to be met with even in England, and in a short time 上向きs of two thousand 続けざまに猛撃するs were collected, and the 現在の chaste and classic edifice, 代表するd in the 別館d plate, was 築くd.

The Hebrews によれば the 国勢（人口）調査 of 1846, numbered in Sydney (603) six hundred and three, and in the 植民地 (1086) one thousand and eighty-six, since which period their numbers have been かなり augmented. Isaac 徴収する, Esq., is now their 大統領; Elias Moses, Esq., Treasurer; Mr. Jacob Isaacs, Reader, etc.; and Mr. George Moss, 長官.

York Street, Plate 66A

The 延長／続編 of York-street, 現在のs few 反対するs deserving particular notice, for though in the earlier days of the City it was the main street 主要な into the Country, it 中止するd to be so upon the 正規の／正選手 形式 of George-street, in 知事 Macquarie's time. Previous to that period the whole of that 部分 of the City bounded by the line now formed by George-street on the east, Druitt-street on the south, and a line 延長するing from Hunter-street to the waters of Darling Harbour on the north, 構成するd what was called the 軍の 地区, and no 非軍事のs were 許すd {page 67} within its 限界s, which 規則 continued in 軍隊 until the arrival of 知事 Macquarie. In those days, it is true, the lines of some of the streets were defined, and occasionally a few connected houses 示すd its direction, but they had received no 指名するs; and it was not till 1811 that any were given. The first streets were 指名するd after the 王室の Family; George-street, which then 延長するd from Campbell's Wharf to Hunter-street, was 指名するd after the King; Prince-street, after the Prince of むちの跡s; York, Clarence, Kent, Cumberland, Sussex, Cambridge, and Gloucester Streets, after the 王室の Dukes. At the same period the City was divided into five 地区s, with a watch-house in each.

The low weatherboard cottage with small garden in 前線, next to Mr. Coveny's the Grocer, for many years the 住居 of Mr. Fairweather, is one of the oldest houses now in the City, having been 築くd some forty-five years, it was then considered one of the best; the small cottages next are also some of the 初めの houses 築くd by the 軍の. The house on the opposite 味方する, retiring a little from the line of street, with balcony in 前線, was for some time the only Coach-office in Sydney, and kept by the proprietor of the Coaches, Lincoln 法案.

The house used as the Town 会議 議会s, since the 合併／会社設立 of the City in 1842, was 築くd by Mr. Commissary Broughton, about the year 1813, on the 場所／位置 of a 列／漕ぐ／騒動 of 兵士s' huts, known by the 指名する of the Rookery; it was afterwards the 住居 of the first 植民地の 長官, Major Goulburn; and again that of Sidney Stephen, Esq., and ten years ago it was the Pultenay Hotel, kept by Mr. Levien.

The Market Sheds on the opposite 味方する of the street, were 築くd about seventeen years since, they consist of four separate buildings, each about two hundred feet long, by thirty in width, and divided into 立ち往生させるs for the sale of the さまざまな 肉親，親類d of produce; the first in York-street is used for the sale of meat, poultry, eggs, butter, cheese, etc., and the next for fruit and vegetables, those on the 味方する of George-street, for 卸売 売買業者s. {page 68} The Markets are opened every day from 7 a.m., till 6 p.m. The first Market was held on that space 近づく the Queen's Wharf now used as a stand by the licensed drays. It was afterwards 除去するd to the open space at the 底（に届く） of Charlotte Place, 直面するing Mr. S. Lyons' Auction 市場, and was subsequently 除去するd to the 場所／位置 of the 現在の Market and Police Office; at first this was only a paddock, with 時折の bark or 厚板 huts, as a 保護 from the 天候, where the さまざまな articles were exposed for sale. The Cattle Market 存在 enclosed by 地位，任命するs and rails; between it and the water, as late as 1810, was the wild bush, through which a road was ordered to be （疑いを）晴らすd, for the convenience of those who brought their produce by water.

CHAPTER XV.

HYDE PARK.--ST. MARY'S CATHEDRAL.

Hyde Park, or as it was 初めは 指定するd the Race Course, is a 罰金 open space, upon the rising ground to the eastward of the City, reserved very judiciously for the recreation of the inhabitants. It is 盗品故買者d in, and the walks, etc., are now を受けるing a 完全にする 修理, the main walk forms a very agreeable promenade, having an 広範囲にわたる 見解（をとる） of the harbour, and その結果 open to the refreshing sea 微風s. It also forms the 円形競技場 in which the native 青年s delight to 競う for the laurels of victory in the noble game of cricket, and in which they certainly excel; there are 非常に／多数の cricket clubs, which make this their rendezvous, and it is seldom you can pass through the Park without finding some of them at practise, It has for many years 中止するd to be a race course, although 初めは （疑いを）晴らすd for that 目的. In the year 1810 on the arrival of the 73rd 連隊, under the 命令（する） of 中尉／大尉／警部補 陸軍大佐 O'Connell, {page 69} (the late Sir Maurice O'Connell), who was also 中尉／大尉／警部補 知事 of the 植民地; it was 野営するd on the rising ground at the southern extremity of what is now the Park. The Officers of this 連隊, 補助装置d by the 政府 公式の／役人s, and Gentry, desirous of 設立するing in the southern 半球 the truly 国家の sport of horse-racing, for which Britons are so 正確に，正当に celebrated, raised subscriptions, and in a short time "（疑いを）晴らすd the course," where had 以前 been a wild forest, or in 植民地の phraseology, the bush, and in October, the same year, held the first racing 会合. The Grand Stand and winning 地位，任命する stood at the 最高の，を越す of what is now called Market-street, and the Course took a sweep to the 権利, in the direction of Hyde Park 兵舎, thence 近づく the 場所／位置 of St. Mary's Cathedral and the Sydney College, passing in 前線 of Lyons' Terrace obliquely to the 最高の，を越す of Bathurst-street, along what is now Elizabeth-street, to the corner of Park-street, and thence to the winning 地位，任命する. That 部分 of the Course from Park-street to the corner of Macquarie-street, 近づく Hyde Park 兵舎, and from Macquarie-street south, to Bathurst-street may be easily traced to this day, the land having been levelled. When first formed, the length of this Course was one mile and a ４半期/4分の1, but it was subsequently 縮めるd to a mile and six yards. At this first 会合, a horse 指名するd "Chance," the 所有物／資産／財産 of Captain Ritchie, won the first prize, 陸軍大佐 O'Connell's horse "Carlo" won another, and a horse belonging to Darcy Wentworth, Esq., took a third. The racing went off with 広大な／多数の／重要な éclat, and was followed (as is usually the 事例／患者 in England), with a race ball. The races continued to be held here during the 行政 of 知事 Macquarie, the last 会合 存在 in 1821; by this time many houses had sprung up in the 周辺, and several of the public buildings 存在 in course of erection, it became necessary to 除去する the races その上の from the town, and その後の 会合s took place at the Sandy Race Course, as it was then called, about four miles to the southward, in the direction of Botany Bay.

The 周辺 of the Race Course was selected by 知事 Macquarie, probably on account of its elevated and 命令（する）ing 状況／情勢, as the 場所／位置 of many of our most important buildings, 近づく it we have the 法律を制定する 会議 議会s, the General Hospital and Dispensary; the 最高裁判所, St. James' Church and Hyde Park 兵舎, are on the north 味方する; St. Mary's Cathedral, the Museum and Sydney College on the east; and on the opposite or west 味方する, the Normal 会・原則, and Georgian School House, more 一般的に called the old 法廷，裁判所 House, from its having been used as such 事前の to the 完成 of the 現在の 最高の 法廷，裁判所.

The 私的な buildings surrounding the Park deserve particular notice, those on the south 味方する, built by Mr. S. Lyons in the year 1840, and 完全にするd in 1841, are without exception the best in the City, and would not 不名誉 the Regent's Park in London.

Hyde Park and Lyon's Terrace and Burdekin's terrace, Plate 70A

The other houses on the same 味方する of the Park, as also those on the east, 含むing Burdekin's Terrace, are 井戸／弁護士席 built respectable 住居s, those on the west 味方する are of a motley character, having been 築くd at さまざまな periods, and after every variety of style; there are however many superior houses amongst them, such as the 住居s of G. Bennett, Esq., M.D. and Dr. Foulis, with the new buildings known as Henderson's Buildings, 延長するing to King-street.

The first place of 死刑執行 was in the 周辺 of what is now Hyde Park; some say it was on the 位置／汚点／見つけ出す now 占領するd by the St. James' Watch-house, others that it was on the opposite 味方する of Elizabeth-street, where Henderson's Buildings now stand, but by a chart in a French work, published by the 当局 of Napoleon in 1803, it appears to have been not many yards from the 場所／位置 of the old 法廷，裁判所 House: on one point, however, there is no difference of opinion, viz., that the exact 位置／汚点／見つけ出す afterwards formed part of a garden that 延長するd up King-street from the corner of Castlereagh-street, embracing part of the 場所／位置 of the 最高裁判所, that of the Watch-house and part of the 場所／位置 of the old 法廷，裁判所 House, and which was {page 71} 認めるd to a person who had been 非難するd, and whilst under the gallows を待つing 死刑執行, was （死）刑の執行猶予（をする）d.

About the year 1804 the gallows was 除去するd to the corner of Park and Castlereagh-street, where the "Barley Mow" public house now stands, again it was 築くd 近づく the 場所／位置 of Barker's Mills, in Sussex-street, it was afterwards 除去するd to the east corner of what is now the Protestant burial ground, 近づく Strawberry Hill, again over the Sand Hills to the 支援する of the new 軍の 兵舎, and in the year 1820, to the old Gaol in Lower George-street, and finally to the gate in 前線 of the new Gaol at Darlinghurst, where the first 死刑執行 of two men for 殺人 took place, October 29,1841.

In reviewing the 早期に history of the 植民地, it is much to be 悔いるd that its pages are stained with 記録，記録的な／記録するs of so many instances of the sacrifice of human life as 罰 for the most trifling offences; even の中で the small 全住民 then in the 植民地, the number 遂行する／発効させるd far 越えるd that of the 現在の day, with a 全住民 of nearly two hundred thousand.

St. Mary's Cathedral was 開始するd under the 後援 of the Rev. J. J. Therry, the first 石／投石する having been laid by His Excellency, 知事 Macquarie, October 20, 1821. Considering the 明言する／公表する of the カトリック教徒 宗教 at that period, and the 限られた／立憲的な means then 存在するing in the 植民地, it must be 認める to have been a noble 成果／努力 of the worthy 創立者; it was considered even by many most 熱心な friends to the 原因（となる）, as far too 広範囲にわたる an 請け負うing, and the 広大な／多数の／重要な length of time taken in the erection 証明するd the justness of their opinions; however by the unceasing 成果／努力s of a few individuals all these difficulties were surmounted, and the noble edifice 代表するd in the 別館d plate 築くd. The Church is a 広大な and lofty pile, in the pointed Gothic style of Architecture, 極端に plain and devoid of ornament, yet 課すing from its 状況／情勢 and magnitude; the 内部の however still remains uncompleted. Beneath the Church 創立／基礎 has been excavated and fitted up as 私的な apartments for 宗教的な students, etc. The Church having been 築くd on rising ground; {page 72} these apartments are on a level with the gardens on the east 味方する, whilst the 床に打ち倒す of the Cathedral is a little above the level of the street on the west. On the north 味方する have been 築くd cloisters, (of a much more ornamental character than the Church itself) connecting the 私的な 住居 of the 大司教 and priests, with the Cathedral. 隣接するing the latter is the very elegant and beautifully finished 私的な chapel of His Grace the 大司教; the windows are of stained glass, and the seats are of the finest cedar, richly and elaborately carved and polished. Opposite the 入り口 to this chapel is the library, 井戸／弁護士席 蓄える／店d with 価値のある 調書をとる／予約するs.

Descending the hill at the 支援する of the Cathedral, we come to the School; a building 築くd about four years since, it is in perfect keeping with the cloisters, and deserves a better position than the one it 占領するs; it is 有能な of 持つ／拘留するing about five hundred persons.

It is 事柄 of surprise that the 政府 of an enlightened nation (as the British （人命などを）奪う，主張するs to be), should have sent to this country so many of its 支配するs without having made any 準備／条項 for their spiritual 指示／教授／教育, yet such was the 事例／患者, and we find the first 成果／努力s to 設立する the Roman カトリック教徒 約束 in this 植民地, was made by political 違反者／犯罪者s, who had been banished from their native land, during the Irish 反乱, in 1798, and sent 囚人s to this country. They of course, had no chapel or public place of worship, but 成し遂げるd their 宗教的な services in 私的な dwellings, the best way they could. The first 集まり (it is believed), was 成し遂げるd in the house in Harrington-street, now the 住居 of Mr. Davies, by a priest who …を伴ってd the French 調査するing 大型船s that arrived here in 1802.

We have not been able to trace the 進歩 of the カトリック教徒 宗教 from that period to the arrival of the Rev. Jeremiah O'Flinn in 1817, but 裁判官ing from the hearty manner in which he was received, and the success that …に出席するd his 労働s for the short period he was 許すd to remain, we cannot suppose the 法令／条例s and practice of their 宗教 had been {page 73} neglected. The 地元の 政府 however, a few months after his arrival placed him in confinement, and 最終的に sent him away by the first 大型船 sailing for England.

ーするために 静める the excitement created in the mother country by the 治療 the Rev. J. 0. Flinn, had 苦しむd, the 政府 there was induced to 認める a stipend each to two missionaries, to be sent to this 植民地, the Revds. J. J. Therry and Connolly, the latter of whom, すぐに after his arrival in 1820, 設立するd himself at Hobart Town, leaving this 広範囲にわたる 植民地 to the 単独の 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金 of the Rev. J. J. Therry, through whose exertions, as we have before 明言する／公表するd, St. Mary's Cathedral was 築くd.

The カトリック教徒 宗教 進歩d 速く from this period, for by the 国勢（人口）調査 taken in the year 1828, (which was the first having any returns relating to the 宗教 of the inhabitants) we find the number of カトリック教徒s 越えるd eleven thousand, in a 全住民 of thirty-six thousand; and by the last 国勢（人口）調査 in 1846, they had 増加するd to fifty-six thousand.

The Rev. Dr. Polding, the first カトリック教徒 Bishop of Australia, arrived in the 植民地, September 13, .1835, and his 就任（式）／開始 took place on the 20th of the same month. He was …を伴ってd by several priests and other ecclesiastics. In many of the towns of the 植民地 churches were now 開始するd, and 大臣s 任命するd, and to those parts of the 植民地 where the 全住民 was scattered over a 広大な extent of country, itinerant missionaries were sent.

At the end of the year 1838, the Rev. Dr. Ullathorne, Roman カトリック教徒 Vicar General, …を伴ってd by three Priests, and five Sisters of Charity, arrived. In 1840 Dr. Polding 乗る，着手するd for England, and during his visit to Rome was created an 大司教, and in 1843 he again returned to the 植民地, bringing with him nine other clergymen. It was also during this visit to England that Dr. Polding 原因（となる）d to be sent out the first peal of bells, which arrived in 1842; a belfry was 築くd 近づく the {page 74} Cathedral and the first merry peal upon them 勧めるd in the new year 1843.

CHAPTER XVI.

SUPREME COURT--ELIZABETH STREET.

The 最高裁判所 代表するd in the 別館d plate was 開始するd in the year 1820, and 完全にするd in August 1828; it was built from the design of Mr. Greenaway the 植民地の Architect. It is a very plain brick building, having no pretensions to architectural beauty, neither is it designed after any particular style, except it be that already 可決する・採択するd in the Hyde Park 兵舎; its 状況／情勢, however, on the rising ground at the corner of King and Elizabeth Streets, with the Park at its 支援する, is such as would give good 影響 to a building of more classic design. The sittings of the 最高裁判所, both in its 犯罪の and Civil 裁判権, were held in this 法廷，裁判所 until the erection of the new 法廷，裁判所 House, Darlinghurst, in 1842; to which the 犯罪の 法廷，裁判所 was 除去するd, and the Civil 原因（となる）s alone are now tried here.

The 入り口 was 初めは on the west 味方する, (the portico and steps are still remaining) it is now on the north 味方する with a ロビー 主要な into both 法廷，裁判所s. At the 支援する are the 裁判官s' 議会s, and a circular stairs 主要な to the さまざまな offices connected with the 法廷，裁判所, and which 占領する the whole of the upper part of the building.

In the 早期に days of the 植民地 the 行政 of 司法（官） in 犯罪の 原因（となる）s was ゆだねるd to a 裁判官 支持する 陸軍大佐 Collins (the 早期に Historian of the 植民地), and a 陪審／陪審員団 of six officers, 海軍の or 軍の: the 法廷，裁判所 was 会を召集するd from time to time under the 手渡す of the 知事, as occasion 要求するd; there 存在 no 直す／買収する，八百長をするd 定期刊行物 sittings. 類似の to {page 75} 法廷，裁判所s 戦争の, 証言，証人／目撃するs were 診察するd by any member of the 法廷，裁判所, the 裁判官 支持する was 大統領，／社長 or 裁判官, and sworn in to "井戸／弁護士席 and truly try, etc.", the same as the other members, and retired with them to 協議する upon the 事例／患者, and also to 投票（する） as a juryman, he had however to でっちあげる，人を罪に陥れる and 展示（する） the 起訴，告発s against the 囚人; the 判決 存在 by a 大多数 of the 法廷，裁判所. If 有罪の, and the offence 資本／首都, they pronounced judgment of death, or other 罰, （許可，名誉などを）与えるing to the custom in England, as 近づく as the circumstances of the 植民地 would 収容する／認める. But no 違反者／犯罪者 could be put to death unless five members of the 法廷，裁判所 should adjudge him 有罪の, or until the King's 楽しみ should be known. The Provost 保安官 原因（となる）d the judgment of the 法廷，裁判所 to be 遂行する／発効させるd, によれば the 知事's 令状, under his 手渡す and 調印（する）.

Almost すぐに upon the first 上陸 of the 囚人s, many of them 開始するd pilfering, and ーするために put a check upon them, the 犯罪の 法廷，裁判所 was 会を召集するd for the first time on the 11th February, (only fifteen days after the first arrival), when one was 宣告，判決d to receive one hundred and fifty 攻撃するd, and another to be 限定するd on Pinchgut Island for a week, upon bread and water. The mildness of these 罰s seemed rather to have encouraged than deterred others, for before the month was ended the 犯罪の 法廷，裁判所 was again 組み立てる／集結するd for the 裁判，公判 of four men who had robbed the public 蓄える／店. They were 罪人／有罪を宣告するd, and one 指名するd James Burrell, 苦しむd death on the に引き続いて day. This was the first 死刑執行 that took place in the 植民地.

Besides the 犯罪の 法廷，裁判所 there was also a 法廷，裁判所 of Civil 裁判権, as it was styled, consisting of the 裁判官 支持する and two inhabitants of the 解決／入植地, 任命するd by the 知事; which 法廷，裁判所 had 十分な 力／強力にする to hear and 決定する in a 要約 way "all manner of personal 嘆願s どれでも." From this 法廷，裁判所, on either party finding himself aggrieved by the judgment, 控訴，上告 might be had to the 知事 (when the 事柄 in 論争 越えるd the value of &続けざまに猛撃する;300,) {page 76} to the King in 会議; these 控訴，上告s were to be put in, if from the 法廷，裁判所, within eight days, and if from the 知事, within fourteen days, after the pronouncing of the judgment. To this 法廷，裁判所 was likewise given 当局 to 認める probate of wills, and 行政 of personal 広い地所s, of intestate persons dying within the 解決／入植地. The first 活動／戦闘 tried in this 法廷，裁判所 was in the year 1790, when the captain of one of the 罪人／有罪を宣告する ships was 告訴するd for monies, etc., ゆだねるd to him, for some of the 囚人s he brought out, and a 判決 was 設立する for the 原告／提訴人s.

中尉／大尉／警部補 陸軍大佐 Collins continued to 行為／法令／行動する as 裁判官 支持する, from the 創立／基礎 of the 植民地 to the year 1804, when he was 除去するd to 先頭 Dieman's Land, having been 任命するd 中尉／大尉／警部補 知事 of that 解決／入植地; he was 後継するd by Richard Atkins, Esq., who continued in the same office until the arrival of Ellis Bent, Esq., in 1810, who also 保持するd the office till his death in 1815.

The 法廷，裁判所 was held at this time in the building in Bent Street, lately used for the 政府 Land Sales, and during the 行政 of 裁判官 支持する Wylde, who 後継するd Ellis Bent, it was held in the building in Macquarie Street, now the (n)役員／(a)執行力のある 会議 議会s. In the year 1817 裁判官 Field arrived. Although the 解決／入植地 of 先頭 Dieman's Land had been 設立するd twelve years, they had no 法廷，裁判所 その上の than that held before a 治安判事, and all 事例／患者s of any importance had その結果 to be sent hither for adjudication, this was …に出席するd with 広大な／多数の／重要な expense and inconvenience, and the ends of 司法（官） were frequently 失望させるd by the absence of 証拠 and other 原因（となる）s, it was therefore 決定するd to form a 法廷，裁判所 at Hobart Town, and in the year 1818, 裁判官 Field proceeded thither to 持つ／拘留する his first 法廷，裁判所, under a 類似の 憲法 to that in Sydney.

Elizabeth Street, Plate 76A

Up to the year 1824 the 法廷，裁判所s 保持するd the same 憲法; when a new 借り切る／憲章 of 司法（官） arrived, with the proper officers necessary to give {page 77} it 影響. Francis Forbes, (afterwards Sir Francis Forbes), arrived as 長，指導者 司法（官）; 裁判官 支持する Wylde was created 裁判官 (裁判官 Field having left the 植民地). Saxe Bannister （機の）カム out as 弁護士／代理人／検事 General, John Stephen, Esq, (the father of our 現在の 長，指導者 司法（官）, Sir Alfred Stephen,) as Solicitor General and Commissioner of the 法廷，裁判所 of Requests. John Mackuness, Esq., as 郡保安官, and T. E. Miller, Esq., as Registrar.

The formal promulgation of the new 借り切る／憲章 took place at the Georgian School House, Castlereagh Street, in May, 1824, and the first sittings of the 最高裁判所, in its 犯罪の 裁判権, was also held there on the tenth of June に引き続いて. 裁判，公判 by 陪審／陪審員団 in 犯罪の 事例／患者s was first 学校／設けるd at the ４半期/4分の1 開会／開廷／会期s held at Liverpool in October the same year; but it was not until February of the next year, 1825, that a 陪審／陪審員団 was empanneled in a Civil 原因（となる）, viz: the King v. Robert Cooper, when a 判決 was returned for the 被告.

The 現在の officers in the 行政 of 司法（官） are, Sir Alfred. Stephen, 長，指導者 司法（官）; John Nodes Dickinson, and William. Montague Manning, Esqrs., Puisne 裁判官s; John Hubert Plunkett, Esq., 司法長官; William Foster, Esq., Solicitor General; A. W. Young, Esq, 郡保安官; S. T. Milford, Esq., Master in 公正，普通株主権, Curator of Intestate 広い地所s, and Commissioner of the 副／悪徳行為 Admiralty 法廷，裁判所; G. P. F. Gregory, Esq., Prothonotary and Registrar; Samuel Raymond, Esq., Chairman of ４半期/4分の1 開会／開廷／会期s; and Alfred Cheeke, Esq., Commissioner of the 法廷，裁判所 of Requests; John Moore Dillon, Esq., 犯罪の 栄冠を与える 検察官，検事; George Cooper Turner, Esq., Civil 栄冠を与える 検察官，検事; Thos. Callaghan, Esq., 栄冠を与える 検察官，検事 of ４半期/4分の1 開会／開廷／会期s; and Edward Rogers, Esq., Clerk of the Peace.

Elizabeth Street, one of the 主要な thoroughfares, 横断するs the City in a southward direction from Hunter Street to its termination at the Burial Ground, 越えるing a mile in length, and as we have seen in our former plates, forms the western 境界 of Hyde Park, from King to Liverpool Street.

Our 現在の plate 代表するs the most respectable 部分 of the street, すなわち, from King Street to its northern extremity at Hunter Street; with few exceptions the whole of the buildings are of modern construction, and 存在 据えるd in the 周辺 of the 最高裁判所, are principally 占領するd as 議会s by the Barristers, and other members of the 合法的な Profession. The first house in the plate is also one of the oldest in the street, having been 築くd as a 私的な 住居 for Mr. G. F. Read, of Hobart Town, some twenty-five years since, it was afterwards used as offices by J. Norton, Esq., the Solicitor, and for the last fifteen years it has been in the 占領／職業 of the 現在の proprietor, Mr. R. Driver, as a public-house, known as the "Three Tuns," and for a long time the general rendezvous of the Australian Cricketers. Passing onwards we come to the Dancing 学院 of Mr. Clark--and as it is one of the places of' public amusement, we cannot pass it by without comment. The ball room on the first 床に打ち倒す 占領するs the 十分な extent of the house, 存在 fifty-five feet long by twenty-five feet wide, and about the same in 高さ, it has a neat gallery 築くd at one end, for the accommodation of the orchestra, is 井戸／弁護士席 lighted from the 天井 with gas, and 隣接するing are dressing and refreshment rooms, forming together a very 完全にする 控訴. The Dancing Classes 会合，会う on Tuesday and Friday Evenings, and are very numerously …に出席するd, 特に in the winter season. Mr. Clark also indulges the votaries of Terpsicore occasionally with public 議会s, and the eclat with which they go off, 証明するs his efficiency as master of the 儀式s. These balls are always very respectably …に出席するd. The ball room from its size 存在 有能な of affording accommodation to about five hundred persons, is often used for concerts, etc., for which it is 井戸／弁護士席 adapted.

On the opposite 味方する of the street are several verandah cottages, built the style peculiar to the 植民地, and which if it be not remarkable for architectural beauty, is at all events best ふさわしい for 慰安 and convenience in this 気候. The wide verandahs afford a 冷静な／正味の 避難所 from the 激しい {page 79} heat of the meridian sun, and give the cottages an 空気／公表する of shady 退職, which has its own peculiar elegance. One of these cottages is 占領するd as the 商売／仕事 offices of George Allen, Esq., one of the most respectable Solicitors, and 豊富な men of the City. He was 収容する／認めるd an 弁護士／代理人／検事 of the 最高裁判所 in the year 1822, and his career has strikingly illustrated how high 尊敬（する）・点 and honour can be 達成するd by persevering 産業, and unswerving 正直さ. Mr. Allen was elected an Alderman of the City at the first 地方自治体の 選挙, and became the third 市長 of the City. He was also 指名するd as a Member of the 法律を制定する 会議 by Sir George Gipps, and re-任命するd after the 解散 of the first 法律を制定する 会議. In. all these positions his 行為／行う has been such as to 命令（する） 尊敬（する）・点 and 是認, but a far higher （人命などを）奪う，主張する will endear his 指名する to the 国民s arising out of his 英貨の／純銀の 価値（がある） as a man, and the unbounded philanthrophy which has 示すd his course through life.

CHAPTER XVII.

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL CHAMBER.--HYDE PARK BARRACKS.--MACQUARIE STREET.

The 議会 in which the 審議する／熟考する 知恵 of the 立法議員s of New South むちの跡s decides on the 運命s of the 植民地, is by no means 課すing in its 外見; there is an entire absence of any 試みる／企てる at grandeur of 影響, in its design and architecture.

Built, at a time, when the 植民地 was sorely feeling the 影響s of former extravagance, the economical mind of the then 知事, Sir George Gipps, discountenanced any 支出 for the 目的 of mere 陳列する，発揮する.

The building in Macquarie Street, however, is far from 存在 disreputable in its outward 面, while its 内部の is at least comfortable if not elegant.

When the 憲法 of the 植民地 was altered;--when New South むちの跡s was permitted to elect 代表者／国会議員s, to make 法律s, whereby her 全住民 should be 治める／統治するd; the の近くに 議会 which 含む／封じ込めるd the dozen 指名された人s; with its abominable little galleries, like 味方する-boxes at a theatre, was 廃止するd. Fresh 人物／姿／数字s were introduced into the 見積（る）s for 1843, and the 植民地の Architect was put in 動議, and perhaps the most decided proof of the promptitude his department can at times 陳列する，発揮する, 存在するs in this building. In about six months after the money was 投票（する）d, the 議会 was 完全にするd; in one short year it had become the 円形競技場 of 猛烈な／残忍な discussion.

By some strange chance, the old 会議 議会, a low, mean looking building, 隣接するd the buildings appropriated to the 医療の Department of the 植民地, and in the 即座の 周辺 of the 政府 Hospital. The new 議会 has arisen in the place of the old, and although the Hospital "stands where it stood," we are happy to say it is now an 会・原則, supported, not out of Commissariat 基金s, but by 私的な subscriptions.

It would be out of place to enter here into any 詳細（に述べる）s of the 訴訟／進行s inside of the 法律を制定する 会議 議会 of New South むちの跡s; we may perhaps 観察する, that whether the 審議s have been for good or for evil, they have at all events evinced as much ability, earnestness, and zeal, as the 審議s of any 立法機関 in the British Dominions.

The 会議 consists of thirty-six Members, twenty-four of whom are elected by the people, and twelve 指名するd by the 政府, six of the latter 存在 paid 公式の／役人s, and six 非，不，無-公式の／役人s, The first elected （衆議院の）議長 was the Hon. Alexander M'Leay, Esq., 以前は 植民地の 長官 of the 植民地, and an elected Member for the 郡s of Stanley and Macquarie. On his 辞職 in consequence of his 前進するd years, Charles Nicholson, Esq., M.D., was elected, and re-elected at the 開始／学位授与式 of the first 開会／開廷／会期 of the second elected 会議 of New South むちの跡s, in 1849.

The 訴訟／進行s of the 会議 have at all times been 行為／行うd with the 最大の decorum, and it is looked up to with that 尊敬（する）・点 and 信用／信任, which can alone attach dignity to the 立法機関 of any country.

Hyde Park 兵舎, 据えるd at the eastern end of King Street, and the north-east corner of Hyde Park, (from which it derives its 指名する,) was 築くd by 知事 Macquarie, as the 主要な／長／主犯 罪人／有罪を宣告する 倉庫・駅 in the 植民地, and was first 占領するd in June, 1819. It is a spacious brick building, and very 井戸／弁護士席 adapted for the 目的 for which it was designed. On the 地階 are the offices, and the other part is divided into nine spacious 区s, each of the larger ones 存在 有能な of 融通するing one hundred and fifty men, as many as fourteen hundred have been 限定するd at one time in this building. All 罪人／有罪を宣告するs, upon their arrival in the 植民地, were 今後d here, and after 存在 duly 登録（する）d, were open for assignment to the 解放する／自由な inhabitants as servants; and, if they 行為／行うd themselves 井戸／弁護士席, (upon the 推薦 of their 雇用者, 支援するd by that of a 治安判事,) were する権利を与えるd to the indulgence of a Ticket of Leave, after a servitude proportionate to their 宣告，判決; thus a 罪人／有罪を宣告する 輸送（する）d for seven years, could 適用する for his ticket at the 満期 of four years, if for fourteen years, at the end of six, and if for life after the eighth year; they frequently however 得るd this indulgence as 'a reward for any praiseworthy 行為／法令／行動する; this ticket gives them the liberty to support themselves in any way they choose, within the 地区 for which it was 認めるd, but if they 不品行／姦通d themselves in any way, or quitted their 地区, their tickets were cancelled, and themselves returned to the 兵舎. Masters bad the 力／強力にする to take their 割り当てるd servants before a 治安判事, for any 不品行／姦通 or neglect of 義務, when they were, if 設立する 有罪の, summarily punished by the 攻撃する, and returned to their service, but if they became incorrigible, they were usually returned to 兵舎 and 交流d for others. The 囚人s returned to 兵舎, or を受けるing {page 82} any 植民地の 宣告，判決, were then 雇うd upon the public 作品 or roads of the 植民地.

The assignment system has however 中止するd since the year 1840, and from that period may be 時代遅れの the 拒絶する／低下する of the 植民地 from that 明言する／公表する of 繁栄, for which it was then 悪名高い; many systems have since been 可決する・採択するd, and all have failed most signally, and although we by no means 願望（する） a return to the 罪人／有罪を宣告する system in this 植民地, we still believe that it was the best ふさわしい, to 埋め立てる the fallen, and to enable him to 再開する a position in society, and while doing so the country was spared the expense of his support, and 濃厚にするd by his 労働. If any argument were necessary to 証明する this, we have only to look around us, and how many men of 資本／首都, as 株主s, merchants, tradesmen, etc., do we see who have served their time as 割り当てるd servants, and who are now as honest, industrious, and in every way as respectable members of society, as any who have arrived 解放する／自由な. Will the probationary system of 先頭 Diemen's Land, Maconochie's of Norfolk Island, or any of the newly invented 計画／陰謀s at home, afford any 類似の results?

In January, 1848, the 囚人s were 除去するd to Cockatoo Island, and the Superintendant's department, to offices in the (n)役員／(a)執行力のある 会議 議会s; since the 再開 of 移住, these 兵舎 have been 占領するd by the 女性（の） emigrants, and the offices by the 移住 Commissioners' department.

The first house in our plate of Macquarie Street, is the parsonage house of St. James', and the 隣接するing 前提s are the offices of the 弁護士／代理人／検事 and Solicitor Generals, we have then three houses of modern construction, and the 初めの Wesleyan Chapel (the first opened by that 団体／死体 in 1821,) next （人命などを）奪う，主張するs our attention. It has recently been used by a party of Presbyterians, but is at 現在の unoccupied. The 後継するing cottages serve to shew the 勝つ／広く一帯に広がるing style of architecture some thirty years since, and by the contrast, give importance to the more modern erections 近づく them. {page 83} The splendid mansion of Mrs. Burdekin, which is next 代表するd, is without exception, the finest 私的な 住居 in the city, and deserving of particular notice. The 前提s now used as a Baptist Chapel, was 以前は the "Friend's 会合 House." We pass Horbury Terrace, the 私的な 住居 of many respectable families, and the Australian Library, of which we have 以前 given a 十分な notice, 現在のs itself; and our plate is 完全にするd by the elegant 列／漕ぐ／騒動 of modern houses, recently 築くd, a fitting 見本／標本 of the 栄えるing 条件 of the city. The first two form the 私的な 住居s of Messrs. Kemp and Fairfax, the proprietors of the Sydney Morning 先触れ（する）.

CHAPTER XVIII.

THE AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM.--NATIONAL SCHOOL.

The next plate by which this work is illustrated is the Australian Museum.

This 会・原則 was 設立するd in the year 1836, and 起こる／始まるd by a number of gentlemen 利益／興味d in the 昇進／宣伝 of science in Australia. It received the cordial support of 知事 Sir Richard Bourke, and since that year a sum of money has been 毎年 placed on the 見積（る）s for its support and 拡張.

The first 大統領 was the late Venerable Alexander M'Leay, Esquire, then 植民地の 長官, who made large 寄付s to the 会・原則 of 価値のある 科学の 見本／標本s, and who 活発に 利益／興味d himself in its 進歩 until the day of his death.

Besides the 年次の sum 投票（する）d out of the general 歳入, 罪人／有罪を宣告する servants were 割り当てるd to the 会・原則, and under the direction of the 政府, Collectors of 見本／標本, chosen from this class, were 任命するd, at the distant penal 解決／入植地s such as Moreton Bay and Norfolk Island.

The Museum was first 設立するd in a small room 大（公）使館員d to the {page 84} 法律を制定する 会議, and Mr. 外科医 Bennet was 任命するd Director, an office he continued to fill for several years, with 広大な／多数の／重要な advantage to the 会・原則; indeed from its 開始／学位授与式 to the 現在の time, the 会・原則 has been 深く，強烈に indebted to the zeal and activity which this gentleman has 展示（する）d in its に代わって.

In a short period the 見本／標本s having 大部分は 増加するd, the Museum was 除去するd to two rooms in the Surveyor General's Office, and while 設立するd there, Dr. Bennet 辞職するd his office of Director in 好意 of Mr. William Sheridan 塀で囲む, who has continued to superintend its 管理／経営 ever since.

In the year 1840, Mr. '塀で囲む, under the 指示／教授／教育s of the 委員会, and at the request of 知事 Sir George Gipps, again 除去するd the Museum, to apartments 用意が出来ている for it, in the 最高の 法廷，裁判所 buildings, at Darlinghurst.

But the accommodation afforded in all of these 設立s was not only insufficient to 収容する／認める of any attractive 展示 of the 見本／標本s, but did not afford proper 施設s for their 準備 and 保護: その結果, although the Museum was opened to the public on every Wednesday, but few 訪問者s availed themselves of the 特権, and the advantages of the 会・原則 were enjoyed 主として by the few individuals, whose taste for 科学の 追跡s led them thither.

The collections of 見本／標本s however, under the able 管理／経営 of the 委員会, and the indefatigable exertions of Mr. 塀で囲む, the Curator, 速く 増加するd in extent and value, and it 存在 at length 設立する, that to 試みる／企てる any 陳列する，発揮する of them was impracticable, 使用／適用 was made to the 政府 for the erection of a building worthy to be 充てるd to such a 目的, in the first City of this 半球. Accordingly, in the 見積（る）s for the year 1846, a sum of &続けざまに猛撃する;3000 appeared for the building of a Museum, and a 場所／位置 was recommended by the 地元の 政府 to be 認めるd for the 目的, at the corner of William and Stanley Streets.

The design and 見積（る）s of the 提案するd building, were 用意が出来ている by Mr. Mortimer William 吊りくさび, 植民地の Architect, and after かなりの 延期する the building was 開始するd.

The sum of &続けざまに猛撃する;3000 was soon 設立する to be utterly 不十分な for the 目的, and a 補足の 投票（する） of &続けざまに猛撃する;1500 was passed in the year 1848. 一方／合間 the building 進歩d very unsatisfactorily, which, 連合させるd with the unsightly 外見 it 現在のd in its half-finished 明言する／公表する, began to excite public notice, and たびたび（訪れる） （民事の）告訴s were made in public and through the 圧力（をかける）. On the occasion of a その上の 投票（する） 存在 asked in the 開会／開廷／会期 of 1849, the 全世界の／万国共通の discontent at the 行為／行う of the 植民地の Architect's department in the 事柄, 設立する a 発言する／表明する, and it 存在 代表するd, that the 完成 of the building on the 初めの design, would cost a sum nearly equal to that already expended; its continuance was loudly 抗議するd against, by several of the 代表者／国会議員 Members of the 法律を制定する 会議.

An enquiry was 学校／設けるd, when it was discovered that a sum of &続けざまに猛撃する;1300 had been expended and was 予定 to the 請負業者s, over and above what had been 投票（する）d by the 会議, and the 補足の 投票（する） of the 会議, was accordingly 制限するd to a sum 十分な to roof in the building, so as to 妨げる 傷害 to the 内部の from rain.

This neglect and utter miscalculation on the part of the 植民地の Architect, 与える／捧げるd very extensively to prejudice the 会・原則, in the 注目する，もくろむs of the public. The professed 経済学者s in the 法律を制定する 会議 talked loudly, of the 財政上の difficulties in which the 植民地 was 伴う／関わるd, and 公然と非難するd the 会・原則, as altogether too expensive for the 植民地, and as unproductive of any advantage corresponding with its cost. A more minute enquiry, 学校／設けるd by the 政府, discovered the 支出 incurred in the building to have been very extravagant, and Mr. 吊りくさび retired from his office at the 長，率いる of the 植民地の Department.

In the 開始／学位授与式 of 1849, the 部分 of the building appropriated {page 86} to the accommodation of the Curator and his family having been made habitable, and two smaller rooms 用意が出来ている for the 歓迎会 of 見本／標本s; Mr. 塀で囲む was 教えるd by the 委員会 to 開始する 除去するing the Museum from Darlinghurst, which was 遂行するd 早期に in March.

The collections at 現在の in the Museum are very 価値のある, and its usefulness, as an 会・原則 for the 昇進／宣伝 of science, has been 温かく 定評のある, by the most distinguished 科学の society in the mother country. They consist principally of a collection of Minerals--植民地の and Foreign; a collection of 爆撃するs--植民地の and Foreign; a collection of 地質学の 見本／標本s arranged by the Rev. W. B. Clarke. But the Museum is 主として rich in its 広範囲にわたる Ornithological and Zoological Collections 構成するing thousands of 見本／標本s, which from the unfinished 明言する／公表する of the building, cannot at 現在の be 適切に 陳列する，発揮するd.

A very large 割合 of these collections, have accrued as the results of the 労働s of Mr. 塀で囲む.

The Museum has lately 現在のd another feature of a most attractive nature. Dr. Nicholson, （衆議院の）議長 of the 法律を制定する 会議, a short time ago, 現在のd the 会・原則 with a princely gift, consisting of a collection of Casts, of the most celebrated 見本／標本s of the Italian School of Sculpture.

These, decidedly the most 価値のある 作品 of art 展示（する）d in the 植民地, are already beginning to attract public attention to the 会・原則 and this, once 得るd, there can be little 疑問 that it will soon 打ち勝つ the 障害s that have hitherto beset its career. The 広大な／多数の／重要な 妨害 in the 進歩 of any 会・原則 of this nature, is the difficulty in 打ち勝つing these prejudices, which 干渉する with a fair 評価 of 長所.

The sordid 見解（をとる）s of penny wise and 続けざまに猛撃する foolish economy, will soon give way before a generous and 自由主義の 賞賛 of art, and a growing sense of the wonders that the more recluse sciences are daily 広げるing to us; and while the diffusion of education in all its grades, is in this century {page 87} 認める, by the most thrifty of 政治家，政治屋s to be the wisest and most 合法的 方式, of expending the public 歳入s of all countries, the wiser, and more enlightened 政治家 will feel, that no greater 援助（する） can be afforded to the 原因（となる） of education, than the 昇進／宣伝 of those 会・原則s which 陳列する，発揮する the excellence to which art may be carried, the mysteries which science can 明らかにする／漏らす, and, in the 賞賛 they 命令（する）, excite that generous emulation to equal and excel, which is the nursing mother of all 改良.

Before this feeling, we believe the 会・原則 is 速く 伸び（る）ing ground in public 好意, and although its hall of 展示 is now wholly useless for the 目的s for which it was designed, we are 確信して, that, even at a greater cost to the public purse, than could reasonably have been 心配するd, the public will readily and speedily acquiesce in its 完成.

The engraving 現在のd to our readers is in 一致 with the 初めの design, so far as its 外部の 外見 is 関心d.

The steps at the 入り口 and the ドーム in the roof, are not however yet 完全にするd.

For a かなりの period the all important 支配する education, has been 圧力（をかける）d upon public notice, by many of our enlightened and 愛国的な colonists, and it is now receiving that attention which the 速く 増加するing 全住民 需要・要求するs.

The system of education about to be 設立するd, is based upon the Irish 国家の, or Lord Stanley's system, and the 調書をとる／予約するs written expressly for the use of these schools, have been received, and are now in the 所有／入手 of the Board of 管理／経営.

The first important movement, in 促進するing the 国家の system of education, was a 投票（する） of the 法律を制定する 会議, in the 開会／開廷／会期 of 1848, of two thousand 続けざまに猛撃するs for the use of the Sydney or Middle 地区, one thousand five hundred 続けざまに猛撃するs for that of Port Philip, and for the 地区s {page 88} beyond the 境界s of 場所, one thousand five hundred 続けざまに猛撃するs; the like sums have also been 投票（する）d for the years 1849 and 1850.

In the year 1849, the building 以前は used as the 軍の Hospital, pleasantly 据えるd on the highest ground in the city, 近づく Fort Phillip, was appropriated by the 政府, for the 形式 of the model school, arid at かなりの expense, has been 完全に remodelled. The exterior 面 has been changed from the unsightly building it was, into that 代表するd in the 別館d plate. Its 内部の economy has also been altered, the old 区s having been 変えるd into spacious and convenient class rooms, and the 広範囲にわたる grounds surrounding, afford ample space for 演習 and training.

This model school (as the 称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語 暗示するs,) is ーするつもりであるd for the 準備 of efficient teachers, with whom the さまざまな 地区 schools of the 植民地 will be 供給（する）d, and who upon the 完成 of their education will have diplomas 認めるd them, the rising 世代 will thus receive the 利益 of every modern 改良 in the art. 操作／手術s will 開始する, on the arrival of teachers, daily 推定する／予想するd from the Model 国家の School in Ireland.

上向きs of sixty schools on this system, are already in 進歩 in the さまざまな 地区s of the 植民地, and about twenty are in 十分な 操作／手術.

The 管理／経営 of this 国家の 請け負うing is intrusted 排他的に to a board of three gentlemen, and whatever difference of opinion may 存在する, as to the probable efficiency of a 団体／死体 thus 構成するd, or of the system introduced, we think there will be 非，不，無, as to the long known probity, enlightened 感情s and zeal of the individuals themselves, すなわち,--The Honorable R. H. Plunkett, 司法長官; The Honorable Charles Nicholson, （衆議院の）議長 of the 法律を制定する 会議; and J. K. Holden, Esquire; Mr. W. C. Wills is 長官.
