NO HALO of romance hangs over the 長，率いる of Harry Tracy. He does not belong to the old West. He had no Bret Harte コンビナート／複合体. There is no chance that blended fact and fiction will make of his life a legend. He was a 犯罪の at heart, a 冷淡な-血d 殺人，大当り machine. But it must be 認める that in his own line he was pre-著名な.

The most thrilling man 追跡（する） America has ever known began on the morning of June 9, 1902, at the gates of the Oregon 刑務所, and continued with unabated vigour until August 5th. 早期に on June 9th Harry Tracy, 殺害者 and 罪人／有罪を宣告するd 夜盗，押し込み強盗, 補助装置d by his partner, David Merrill, escaped from 刑務所，拘置所 after 殺人，大当り three guards, 負傷させるing a fourth, and 粉々にするing the 脚 of another 囚人 who 試みる／企てるd to ひったくる from him the ライフル銃／探して盗む with which he was 武装した. For nearly two months this keen-注目する，もくろむd, resourceful, and desperate 無法者 wrote in 血 the most thrilling melodrama ever 制定するd in real life. No "penny dreadful" ever bristled with such fascinating impossibilities; no character in fiction ever 連合させるd with such wonderful 神経 and daring so much shrewdness, dogged 決意, deadly 技術 with 武器s, and knowledge of human nature as was 陳列する，発揮するd by the 無法者 Tracy. To say that not once, during the months in which he was 追跡（する）d by hundreds of 武装した men and by bloodhounds, did he show the white feather, or even the slightest excitement, is to tell but a small part of the truth. Many men on the Western frontier might have emulated his coolness and 神経, but not one of them could have 平行のd his smiling audacity, his contempt for fearful 半端物s, the 技術 with which he eluded his pursuers, and the unfailing 正確 with which he 遂行する／発効させるd his carefully planned manœuvres. Whenever the arm of the 法律 was stretched 前へ／外へ to gather him in, Tracy like a tiger at bay, showed his teeth and bit so suddenly and so fearfully that 勇敢に立ち向かう men stood aghast. His fight for liberty was the most desperate in the 犯罪の annals of America. The 偉業／利用するs of the famous 足緒 James ギャング（団） are not to be compared with the lurid escape and その後の 追跡 of Harry Tracy across hundreds of miles of unfriendly country. For daring, fertility of 資源, and 冷淡な-血d 神経 his fight for liberty against almost impossible numbers is without a 平行の. 追跡（する）d by thousands of 武装した men, with a reward of $8,000 on his 長，率いる, dead or alive, Tracy for months 反抗するd 逮捕（する）, leaving dead and 負傷させるd men behind him whenever he was hard 圧力（をかける）d.

On June 9, 1902, the foundry ギャング（団） of 囚人s at the Salem (Oregon) 刑務所 was marched to its work as usual by Guards Girard and Ferrell. The 罪人／有罪を宣告するs were counted in and 発表するd as all 現在の by Girard. While the words were still on his lips a ライフル銃／探して盗む 発射 echoed through the yard, and Ferrell fell 今後 with a cry of agony. He had been killed by Harry Tracy, a 罪人／有罪を宣告する, who had already 殺人d two men in Colorado and was serving a twenty-years' 宣告，判決 for 押し込み強盗 along with an 共犯者 指名するd David Merrill. Tracy, seconded by his partner in 罪，犯罪, now turned upon the other guards and began 狙撃. A life 囚人, Ingram by 指名する, leaped upon Tracy with the 意向 of 武装解除するing him, but was すぐに 発射 負かす／撃墜する by Merrill. In the 混乱 the two desperate men 規模d the 刑務所，拘置所 塀で囲むs by means of a ladder which they 設立する 近づく at 手渡す. Once over they turned their attention to the 盗品故買者 guards. S. R. Jones, patrolling the northwest corner of the stockade, fell, pierced by two 弾丸s. Another guard, Duncan Ross, was 負傷させるd. Guard Tiffany emptied his ライフル銃／探して盗む at the men but failed to 攻撃する，衝突する his 示す. He was himself 負傷させるd and fell from the 塀で囲む to the ground, where he was 選ぶd up by the two escaping 囚人s, who calmly used him as a 保護物，者 while they 退却／保養地d to the 支持を得ようと努めるd. At the 辛勝する／優位 of the forest they 発射 him, took his ライフル銃／探して盗む, and disappeared into the underbrush.

Tracy and Merrill were 井戸／弁護士席 武装した with short Winchesters, which it is thought must have been 内密に 供給（する）d to them by sympathizers who visited the 刑務所，拘置所 in the guise of excursionists. They had already killed three men ーするために escape, and while at liberty were a menace to the community. So an 緊急の call was sent for 援助. 郡保安官 Durbin, with a ひどく 武装した posse, すぐに answered the telephone message sent him, and appeared at the 刑務所，拘置所 to 補助装置 Superintendent 物陰／風下, of the 刑務所, in 再度捕まえるing the escaped 罪人／有罪を宣告するs.

The two 犯罪のs, however, managed to elude 追跡 during the whole day, and under cover of night passed through Salem. Here they held up a man 指名するd J. W. Stewart, made him disrobe, and took his 着せる／賦与するing. Later an expressman 指名するd Welch discarded, at their orders, an overcoat and a pair of 全体にわたるs; and the stable of one Felix Labaucher furnished them with two 急速な／放蕩な horses. One 著名な fact in the escape of the desperado Tracy is the 恐れる which he somehow managed to instil into the minds of the hardy frontiersmen の中で whom he lived for the next two months, and which stood him in good stead on many occasions when he was hard 圧力（をかける）d.

ひどく 武装した, in 国民s' 着せる／賦与するing, and 機動力のある on good horses, the 罪人／有罪を宣告するs were now 用意が出来ている to make a stubborn fight for liberty. No more dangerous 犯罪の than Tracy, in fact, was ever turned loose upon a community. He was a dead 発射 and did not know what 恐れる meant.

Bloodhounds sent 負かす／撃墜する from the Washington 明言する／公表する 刑務所 followed the scent of the 逃亡者／はかないものs for some time, but finally lost it. The pair were seen next morning at Brooks, a 駅／配置する on the Southern 太平洋の 鉄道 eight mlles north of Salem. During the night they had 設立する it necessary to get rid of their horses. On June 11th the two men were surrounded by a posse of fifty men 近づく Gervais. They were still on the line of the Southern 太平洋の and were 長，率いるd north for the 明言する／公表する of Washington 経由で Portland. The couple were known to be exceedingly 井戸／弁護士席 武装した, for during the night they had had the audacity to 停止する two of the 追求するing posse and relieve them of their 武器s! Before noon a hundred men surrounded the 支持を得ようと努めるd in which the men lurked. Every man within a 半径 of ten miles who 所有するd a gun was 召喚するd to join the posse, and Company F of the Oregon 明言する／公表する 国家の Guards also arrived upon the scene. A 完全にする 非常線，警戒線 surrounded the 明らかに doomed men, but during the night the two desperadoes slipped silently through the lines and escaped.

They were next seen at the house of Mrs. Akers, where they 軍隊d the 農業者's wife to 準備する them a good breakfast. After they had gone the 農業者 telephoned to 郡保安官 Durbin, who （機の）カム on at once with his posse and the bloodhounds.

The escaped 囚人s 圧力（をかける）d 今後 to Clackamas 郡, where 郡保安官 Cook with a posse and three companies of 民兵 took up the chase. As they continued north the desperadoes lived on the country, 持つ／拘留するing up farms for food and horses as they travelled. They always boldly 発表するd who they were. A dozen times they were 発射 at, several times they were surrounded, and once Tracy 解雇する／砲火／射撃d and winged one of his pursuers. The reward for the 逮捕（する） of the 罪人／有罪を宣告するs was 二塁打d, and 二塁打d again, and public excitement grew 激しい. For five days the 郡保安官 and his posse continued the chase, and then gave up, 疲れた／うんざりした and discouraged.

一方／合間, Tracy had 軍隊d a 農業者 at the muzzle of his revolver to 列／漕ぐ／騒動 him and his companion across the Columbia River into Washington. They dined at the house of a 農業者 指名するd Peedy, whom they tied and gagged before leaving. 郡保安官 沼, of Clarke 郡, with a very large 軍隊, took up the chase with energy. A four-cornered duel took place between the 逃亡者／はかないものs and two of the posse who （機の）カム in touch with them, but the 罪人／有罪を宣告するs again escaped 損なわれない. For some days after this episode their 追跡する was 完全に lost.

It was on July 2d that Tracy 再現するd to 制定する the most stirring scenes of his melodramatic career. He had been 長，率いるing for the Puget Sound country, and after 持つ／拘留するing up a 農業者 or two for practice he modestly decided to honour the city of Seattle with a visit. It was 早期に morning, and the sun was just breaking through the もや and 霧 that hung over South Bay, 近づく Olympia, the 明言する／公表する 資本／首都, when a man entered the テント of an oyster 漁業 company and ordered Mr. Horatio Alling, the 経営者／支配人, and his two men to furnish him a meal.

"I'm Tracy, the 罪人／有罪を宣告する," said the stranger. "I want something to eat 権利 away. Be 静かな, raise no fuss, and I won't 害（を与える） you."

A 開始する，打ち上げる lay at 錨，総合司会者 近づく the テント, and Tracy ordered one of the men to call her captain to breakfast. The 罪人／有罪を宣告する waited coolly till Captain Clark and his son had finished breakfast and then ordered Clark to get up steam at once, as he 願望（する）d to go to Seattle. Before leaving he tied Mr. Alling and the cook 手渡す and foot and helped himself to any 着せる／賦与するs that took his fancy.

From 1894 till 1898 I had lived 近づく Seattle and at this time I was 支援する there visiting my parents. Alling had been a very の近くに friend of 地雷, and his adventure with Tracy 刺激するd my already keen 利益／興味 in the chase. Later, in the capacity of a newspaper 特派員, I saw a good 取引，協定 of the men who had 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金 of the 逮捕（する） of the out- 法律 and was at one time with the posse (完全に as a 平和主義者) which operated 近づく Bothell.

During the 開始する，打ち上げる ride to Seattle Tracy remained at one end of the little cabin, his gun 残り／休憩（する）ing in his （競技場の）トラック一周 ready for use in 事例／患者 any of the 活動／戦闘s of his 乗組員 appeared to him 怪しげな. For twelve hours the 強盗 was 完全にする master of the 状況／情勢. He was 平易な, unconcerned, and debonair, ready to joke and to laugh with his unwilling servants, but his steely 注目する，もくろむs never relaxed their vigilance for a moment. Someone asked him where his partner Merrill was.

Tracy's 直面する 始める，決める hard.

"I killed him," he answered 静かに.

"Killed him?" 繰り返し言うd his 質問者, in surprise.

"Yes, I killed him. He had no 神経 and he was a 反逆者. I read in the Portland papers after our escape that it was 予定 to （警察などへの）密告，告訴（状） from Merrill that I was caught in the first place—that time I stole the engine and was knocked senseless by a ちらりと見ることing 発射. Merrill had told them where they could find me. Then, too, he was a coward, always ready to bolt. He was no good. The man was 脅すd to death all the time. It made me angry when the papers gave him half the credit for our escape. I told him he was a coward, and he got huffy. Then we decided to fight a duel when we were 近づく Chehalis. We were to start, 支援する to 支援する, and walk ten paces each, then wheel 一連の会議、交渉／完成する and begin 解雇する／砲火／射撃ing. He haggled so in arranging the 条件 that I knew he meant to play 誤った. I couldn't 信用 him, so when I had taken eight steps I 解雇する／砲火／射撃d over my shoulder. I 攻撃する，衝突する him in the 支援する. The first 発射 did not finish him, so I 発射 again. He only got what he deserved. The fellow meant to kill me treacherously and steal out of the country through the big 木材／素質, leaving my dead 団体／死体 の中で the leaves."

The finding of Merrill's 団体／死体 two weeks later 証明するd the truth of Tracy's treachery toward his companion. He had evidently 設立する that the other man was losing his 神経, and had got rid of him to save その上の trouble.

All day Tracy 陳列する，発揮するd the greatest carelessness in regard to human life. At one time he 願望（する）d the captain of the 開始する，打ち上げる to run in の近くに to McNeil's Island, where a 政府 軍の 刑務所，拘置所 is 位置を示すd, in order that he might get a マリファナ 発射 at one of the guards. During the day he dozed わずかに once or twice, but, as his ライフル銃／探して盗む was across his （競技場の）トラック一周 and the slightest movement awakened him, the 乗組員 dared not 干渉する with him. At Meadow Point, 近づく the city of Seattle, Tracy finished his ヨットing trip, tied the captain and 乗組員 up, and went 岸に, 軍隊ing one of the terrified men to …を伴って him as a guide. The ascendancy this man acquired over everybody he met is remarkable.

The 無法者 長，率いるd toward the north end of Lake Washington and was 認めるd more than once before he reached Bothell. Here he lay hidden till morning in the dense 小衝突 and 安全な・保証するd some much-needed sleep. It was raining hard, but there is no 疑問 that the escaped 罪人／有罪を宣告する 設立する 避難所 from the 嵐／襲撃する under some big スピードを出す／記録につけるs 一方／合間, Seattle was 十分な of wild rumours about Tracy Every 逸脱する tramp was an 反対する of 疑惑, and the greatest excitement 勝つ／広く一帯に広がるd の中で people. Before night the excitement had 増加するd tenfold. Harry Tracy, it was 報告（する）／憶測d, had come into touch with two posses, had engaged in 戦う／戦い with them, killed three officers and 負傷させるd one, and had himself escaped 損なわれない!

執拗な 報告（する）／憶測s （機の）カム to the city of Tracy's presence 近づく Bothell. It was said that he was surrounded in a brickyard; that he had several times been definitely identified by men who saw him skulking in the 激しい 木材／素質. 郡保安官 Cudihee, of King 郡, a fearless and efficient officer who had a good 記録，記録的な／記録する for running 負かす／撃墜する 犯罪のs, at once ordered posses to the scene and 急いでd there himself. It may be 明言する／公表するd in passing that from that moment to the time of Tracy's death 郡保安官 Cudihee hung doggedly to the 追跡する of the 飛行機で行くing 強盗. Other 郡保安官s took up the 追跡（する） and dropped it when the 罪人／有罪を宣告する had passed out of their bailiwicks, but Cudihee alone followed him like a bloodhound wherever he went, until the question of Tracy's escape or 逮捕（する） （機の）カム to bc a personal 問題／発行する between Edward Cudihee and Harry Tracy, two of the most fearless and 決定するd men that ever carried a gun.

At Bothell the posse separated, and every road was guarded. Two 公式の／役人s from Everett, several from Seattle, and Mr. Louie B. Sefrit, a reporter for the Seattle Times, started 負かす／撃墜する the road toward Pontiac, part of them に引き続いて the 鉄道 跡をつける and part the wagon road. About a hundred yards southeast of where the 鉄道／強行採決する 跡をつける and the wagon road cross again there were two small cabins standing in a yard which was much overgrown with grass, 少しのd, and old tree stumps. Three men, 指名するd Williams, Brewer, and Nelson, jumped through a wire 盗品故買者 and started toward the cabins, while the others went 負かす／撃墜する the 跡をつける to 診察する the cabins from that 味方する. Said one Raymond to Sefrit, the reporter:

"I believe Tracy is in that yard."

Sefrit answered that he thought so, too, for the grass had been freshly beaten 負かす／撃墜する. He pointed to a 黒人／ボイコット stump some five yards in 前線 of him. Like all tree stumps in the Puget Sound country, it had been partly 燃やすd.

"That's 正確に／まさに where I believe he is," said Raymond. "Let's——"

He never finished the 宣告，判決. From behind the stump arose Tracy himself, his ライフル銃／探して盗む at his shoulder. There （機の）カム a flash, and Anderson, one of the 副s, fell. Still another spit of 炎上 belched from the ライフル銃／探して盗む, and Raymond fell 支援する with a stifled cry. He was やめる dead before help reached him. Sefrit took a 発射 at the desperado with a Colt's revolver, その結果 Tracy wheeled and let 運動 at him. Sefrit, realizing that he was in an exposed position, fell as if 発射. The 無法者 解雇する／砲火／射撃d again at him, then waited watchfully to make sure he had killed his man. A bunch of grass lay between Sefrit's 長，率いる and Tracy, but the reporter could see the 罪人／有罪を宣告する crouching behind the stump and knew that the slightest movement meant death. So for some minutes the Times reporter lay there in an agony of suspense, 推定する／予想するing every moment to feel a 弾丸 涙／ほころびing through his breast. Then Tracy slowly began to 支援する away in the drenching rain. Two more 発射s rang out, and Jack Williams, who had been coming 今後 from the 後部, fell, 猛烈に 負傷させるd.

Tracy scudded away in the 厚い underbrush, and half a mile from the scene of 戦う／戦い relieved a rancher of a horse he was riding. This he presently discarded, impressing into his service a 農業者 指名するd Louis Johnson, with his wagon. He 軍隊d the 農業者 to 運動 him to Fremont, which is a 郊外 of Seattle. By this time the escaped 罪人／有罪を宣告する was very hungry. He made Johnson hitch his team to the 盗品故買者 outside the home of Mrs. R. H. 先頭 Horn and then 招待するd himself to dinner. Mrs. 先頭 Horn at once 認めるd Tracy from his published photograph.

"What do you want?" she asked.

"Food, madam, and 着せる／賦与するing," returned the 都市の 殺害者. It chanced that there was a man 指名するd Butterfield in the house, and from him Tracy coolly took the 乾燥した，日照りの 着せる／賦与するing which he wore. 存在 in a good humour, the 強盗 dropped into the kitchen and conversed with Mrs. 先頭 Horn while she 用意が出来ている his meal for him.

"I have never 'held up' a lady before," he explained, while eating the food. "I don't want to have to tie you when I leave. Will you 約束 not to say anything about my having been here?"

"For to-night I will—but not to-morrow morning," answered the 勇敢な little woman.

"That will be all 権利," said Tracy; "I'll be far enough away by then. I want to tell you, madam, that I 港／避難所 t enjoyed a meal so much in three years." He then について言及するd his "ヨットing trip," as he called it, from Olympia to Seattle.

At eight-thirty o'clock a knock （機の）カム at the door. Mr. Butterfield answered it and said that it was the grocery boy.

Suddenly out of the 不明瞭 急ぐd Police Officer Breece, Mr. J. I. McKnight, and Game Warden Neil Rawley. Breece covered the 罪人／有罪を宣告する with his ライフル銃／探して盗む from a distance of about ten yards and cried, "Throw 負かす／撃墜する that gun, Tracy!"

The desperado wheeled and 解雇する／砲火／射撃d point-blank. Breece fell over, a dead man. Twice more the 罪人／有罪を宣告する 解雇する／砲火／射撃d, this time at Rawley, and the game warden went to the ground mortally 負傷させるd. Tracy dashed through the 盗品故買者 and made for the 支持を得ようと努めるd. The 郡保安官 levelled his ライフル銃／探して盗む and 解雇する／砲火／射撃d twice at the disappearing 罪人／有罪を宣告する, but 借りがあるing to the 不明瞭 neither 発射 took 影響. Harry Tracy, 夜盗，押し込み強盗, 無法者, and 殺害者, had again broken through the death 罠（にかける） that had been 用意が出来ている for him. Had it not been for the recklessness of 干渉するing 公式の／役人s Cudihee would undoubtedly have caught or killed his man.

With the curious mania which he had for continually 二塁打ing on his 跡をつけるs Tracy again 長，率いるd for Bothell, 近づく which point he held up 農業者 Fisher for 着せる／賦与するs and 準備／条項s. Cornered in a （土地などの）細長い一片 of country not twenty miles square, in the 中央 of which was a city of one hundred and twenty thousand 全住民, though three 団体／死体s lay in the 郡 morgue to attest his unerring 技術 and others lay 負傷させるd 近づく to death in the hospitals, yet Harry Tracy still roamed the country like an Apache, uninjured and untamable. Whenever men bearded him he left a 追跡する of 血 behind him in his relentless flight. He himself 容赦するd his 罪，犯罪s because, as he said, he killed to 満足させる no lust for 血 but 簡単に to keep his 心にいだくd liberty.

ーするために understand how one fearless man was able for so long a time to 反抗する the 法律, the nature of the country must be considered. The Puget Sound country was at that time the most 密集して 木材／素質d on earth. The underbrush is very 激しい, and a 階級 growth of ferns some four feet high covers the ground like a carpet. A man might slip into the ferns and remain hidden for months within a dozen yards of the 道端 供給するd the food question were 除去するd. The one thing that Tracy 恐れるd was the bloodhounds which were 始める，決める on his 追跡する, and after he had 発射 these, his mind was more at 緩和する.

After 持つ／拘留するing up another 世帯 of Johnsons, Tracy—…を伴ってd by their 雇うd man, Anderson, whom he 軍隊d to …に出席する him as a human pack-horse—二塁打d 支援する to Seattle by way of Port Madison. He skirted the city till he （機の）カム to South Seattle, and then 削減（する） around the end of Lake Washington to Renton. At this point he made himself the uninvited guest of the Jerrolds family. Walking up from Renton with his unwilling companion, Tracy met 行方不明になる May パン職人, Mrs. McKinney, and young Jerrolds 選ぶing salmonberries. Tracy stopped them, smiling. "I guess you have heard of me; I am Tracy," he said; then 追加するd, "You needn't be afraid of me. I never 害（を与える）d a woman in my life, and I don't ーするつもりである to begin now."

Talking easily with the women, Tracy walked along to the house, in the 後部 of which he tied Anderson to a clump of bushes. He called the Jerrolds boy and 手渡すd him two watches, which he wished sold in order to buy two 45-calibre 選び出す／独身-活動／戦闘 Colt revolvers and a box of cartridges. He 脅すd to kill everybody in the house in 事例／患者 the boy betrayed him, but the lad was no sooner gone than he told Mrs. Jerrolds that this was mere bluff. "I wouldn't 傷つける you, Mother, for anything. I have a mother of my own somewhere 支援する East. I 港／避難所't done just 権利 by her, but I reckon all the mothers are 安全な from me, no 事柄 what happens."

Presently Tracy brightened again and was laughing and talking with the three women just as if they had been old 知識s. It was nearly time to 準備する dinner, and Tracy carried in 支持を得ようと努めるd and volunteered to get the water from the spring. ライフル銃／探して盗む in 手渡す, he sauntered 負かす／撃墜する to the 鉄道／強行採決する 跡をつける and filled his bucket with water. As he did so a special train, 耐えるing the posse which 追跡（する）d him, （機の）カム 一連の会議、交渉／完成する the bend. He ducked into the bushes to let it pass.

"I reckon there are some gentlemen in that train looking for me," he 発言／述べるd carelessly when he had reached the house. "I saw a reporter there. They are always in the lead. First you see a reporter, then a cloud of dust, and alter a while the 副s. It's the interviewer I'm afraid of!" And he laughed.

There was much gay talk and laughter during the meal which followed, in which Tracy took the lead. His repartee was apt and spirited, and his sallies were irresistible. The Jerrolds boy had 知らせるd the 郡保安官's officer of Tracy's どの辺に long ago, and by this time the 副s were beginning to surround the house. Everybody was alarmed save the 無法者 himself. Then he made a dash for a wheat field 近づく at 手渡す, the officers 解雇する／砲火／射撃ing at him as he, ran. Suddenly he つまずくd and fell on his 直面する, but dragged himself on 手渡すs and 膝s into the field.
