IT WAS in the days when the new 鉄道／強行採決する was 押し進めるing through the country of the plains Indians that a drunken cowboy got on the train at a way 駅／配置する in Kansas. John Bender, the conductor, asked him for his ticket. He had 非，不，無, but he pulled out a handful of gold pieces.

"I wantta—g-go to—h-hell," he hiccoughed.

Bender did not hesitate an instant. "Get off at Dodge. One dollar, please."

Dodge City did not get its 指名する because so many of its 国民s were or had been, in the Texas phrase, on the dodge. It （機の）カム やめる respectably by its cognomen. The town was laid out by A. A. Robinson, 長，指導者 engineer of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and it was called for 陸軍大佐 Richard I. Dodge, 指揮官 of the 地位，任命する at Fort Dodge and one of the 創立者s of the place. It is 価値（がある） 公式文書，認めるing this, because it is one of the few respectable facts in the 早期に history of the cowboy 資本／首都. Dodge was a wild and uncurried prairie wolf, and it howled every night and all night long. It was gay and young and lawless. Its sense of humour was 誇張するd and worked overtime. The 割れ目 of the six-shooter punctuated its hilarity ominously. Those who dwelt there were the valiant 先導 of civilization. For good or bad they were strong and 強烈な, many of them generous and big-hearted in spite of their lurid lives. The town was a 蜂の巣 of energy. One might 正確に，正当に use many adjectives about it, but the word respectable is not の中で them.

There were three 推論する／理由s why Dodge won the 評判 of 存在 the wildest town the country had ever seen. In 1872 it was the end of the 跡をつける, the last Jumping-off 位置／汚点／見つけ出す into the wilderness, and in the days when transcontinental 鉄道／強行採決するs were building across the 砂漠 the 一時的な terminus was always a 集会 place of roughs and scalawags. The payroll was large, and gamblers, gunmen, and 凶漢s gathered for the pickings. This was true of Hays, Abilene, Ogalala, and 道具 Carson. It was true of Las Vegas and Albuquerque.

A second 推論する／理由 was that Dodge was the end of the long 追跡する 運動 from Texas. Every year hundreds of thousands of longhorns were driven up from Texas by cowboys scarcely いっそう少なく wild than the hill steers they herded. The 広大な／多数の／重要な plains country was 存在 opened, and cattle were needed to 在庫／株 a thousand ranches 同様に as to 供給（する） the 政府 at Indian 保留（地）／予約s. 得点する／非難する／２０s of these 追跡する herds were brought to Dodge for 出荷／船積み, and after the long, dangerous, 運動 the punchers were keen to spend their money on such 転換s as the town could 申し込む／申し出. Out of sheer high spirits they liked to shoot up the town, to buck the tiger, to swagger from saloon to 賭事ing hall, their persons garnished with revolvers, the 刺激（する）s on their high-heeled boots jingling. In no spirit of malice they 手配中の，お尋ね者 it distinctly understood that they owned the town. As one of them once put it, he was born high up on the Guadaloupe, raised on prickly pear, had 棺／かげりd with alligators and quarrelled with grizzlies.

Also, Dodge was the heart of the buffalo country. Here the hunters were outfitted for the chase. From here 広大な／多数の／重要な 量s of hides were shipped 支援する on the new 鉄道／強行採決する R. M. Wright, one of the 創立者s of the town and always one of its 主要な 国民s, says that his 会社／堅い alone shipped two hundred thousand hides in one season. He 見積（る）s the number of buffaloes in the country at more than twenty-five million, admitting that many 同様に 知らせるd as he put the 人物／姿／数字 at four times as many. Many times he and others travelled through the 広大な herds for days at a time without ever losing sight of them. The 殺人，大当り of buffaloes was 平易な, because the animals were so stupid. When one was 発射 they would mill 一連の会議、交渉／完成する and 一連の会議、交渉／完成する. Tom Nickson killed 120 in forty minutes; in a little more than a month he 虐殺（する）d 2,173 of them. With good luck a man could earn a hundred dollars a day. If he had bad luck he lost his scalp.

The buffalo was to the plains Indian food, 燃料, and 避難所. As long as there were plenty of buffaloes he was in 楽園. But he saw at once that this 虐殺（する） would soon 皆殺しにする the 供給（する）. He hated the hunter and 戦う／戦いd against his encroachments. The buffalo hunter was an intrepid plainsman. He fought Kiowas, Comanches, and the 火刑／賭けるd Plain Apaches, 同様に as the Sioux and the Arapahoe. Famous の中で these hunters were Kirk Jordan Charles Rath, Emanuel Dubbs, Jack 橋（渡しをする）s, and Curly Walker. Others even better known were the two Buffalo 法案s (William Cody and William Mathewson) and Wild 法案.

These three factors then made Dodge: it was the end of the 鉄道／強行採決する, the terminus of the cattle 追跡する from Texas the centre of the buffalo 貿易（する）. Together they made it "the beautiful bibulous Babylon of the frontier," in the words of the editor of the Kingsley Graphic. There was to come a time later when the bibulous Babylon fell on evil days and its main source of income was old bones. They were buffalo-bones, gathered in wagons, and piled beside the 跡をつける for 出荷／船積み, hundreds and hundreds of carloads of them, to be used for fertilizer. (I have seen 広大な／多数の／重要な 量s of such bones as far north as the Canadian 太平洋の line, corded for 出荷／船積み to a factory.) It used to be said by way of derision that buffalo bones were 合法的な tender in Dodge.

But that was in the far 未来. In its 早期に years Dodge 棒 the wave of 繁栄. Hays and Abilene and Ogalala had their day, but Dodge had its day and its night, too. For years it did a tremendous 商売／仕事. The streets were so 封鎖するd that one could hardly get through. Hundreds of wagons were parked in them, outfits belonging to 貨物船s, hunters, cattlemen, and the 政府. 得点する／非難する／２０s of （軍の）野営地，陣営s surrounded the town in every direction. The yell of the cowboy and the weird 誓い of the bullwhacker and the mule skinner were heard in the land. And for a time there was no 法律 nearer than Hays City, itself a burg not given to undue 静かな and peace.

Dodge was no sleepy village that could drowse along without peace officers. （頭が）ひょいと動く Wright has 始める，決める it 負かす／撃墜する that in the first year of its history twenty-five men were killed and twice as many 負傷させるd. The elements that made up the town were too diverse for perfect harmony. The 貨物船s did not like the 鉄道／強行採決する graders. The 兵士s at the fort fancied themselves as scrappers. The cowboys and the buffalo hunters did not fraternize a little bit. The result was that Boot Hill began to fill up. Its inhabitants were buried with their boots on and without 棺s.

There was another 共同墓地, for those who died in their beds. The 気候 was so healthy that it would have been very sparsely 占領するd those first years if it had not been for the skunks. During the 早期に months Dodge was a city of （軍の）野営地，陣営s. Every night the 解雇する／砲火／射撃s 炎上d up from the 周辺 of hundreds of wagons. Skunks were 非常に／多数の. They はうd at night into the warm 一面に覆う／毛布s of the sleepers and bit the rightful owners when they 抗議するd. A dozen men died from these bites. It was thought at first that the animals were a special variety, known as the hydrophobia skunk. In later years I have sat around Arizona （軍の）野営地，陣営 解雇する／砲火／射撃s and heard this 支配する discussed heatedly. The Smithsonian 学校／設ける, 控訴，上告d to as 審判（をする）, decided that there was no such 種類 and that deaths from the bites of skunks were probably 予定 to 血 毒（薬）ing 原因（となる）d by the foul teeth of the animal.

In any 事例／患者, the skunks were only one half as venomous as the gunmen, 裁判官ing by comparative 統計（学）. Dodge decided it had to have 法律 in the community. Jack 橋（渡しをする）s was 任命するd first 保安官.

Jack was a 公式文書，認めるd scout and buffalo hunter, the sort of man who would have peace if he had to fight for it. He did his sleeping in the afternoon, since this was the 静かな time of the day. Someone shook him out of slumber one day to tell him that cowboys were riding up and 負かす／撃墜する 前線 Street 狙撃 the windows out of buildings. Jack sallied out, old buffalo gun in 手渡す. The cowboys went whooping 負かす／撃墜する the street across the 橋（渡しをする） toward their （軍の）野営地，陣営. The old hunter took a long 発射 at one of them and dropped him. The cowboys buried the young fellow next day.

There was a good 取引，協定 of excitement in the cow （軍の）野営地，陣営s. If the boys could not have a little fun without some old donker, an old vinegaroon who couldn't take a joke, filling them 十分な of lead it was a pretty howdy-do. But Dodge stood pat. The 検死官's 陪審／陪審員団 投票（する）d it 正当と認められる 殺人. In 未来 the young Texans were more 控えめの. In the 早期に days whatever 法律 there was did not 干渉する with 死傷者s 予定 to personal differences of opinion 供給するd the 事件／事情／状勢 had no 異常に 悪意のある 面.

The first 卸売 殺人，大当り was at Tom Sherman's dance hall. The 事件／事情／状勢 was between 兵士s and gamblers. It was started by a 州警察官，騎馬警官 指名するd Hennessey, who had a 評判 as a bad man and a いじめ（る）. He was killed, as were several others. The officers at the fort glossed over the 事柄, perhaps because they felt the 兵士s had been to 非難する.

One of the lawless characters who drifted into Dodge the first year was Billy Brooks. He quickly 設立するd a 評判 as a 殺し屋. My old friend Emanuel Dubbs, a buffalo hunter who "took the hides off'n" many a bison, is 当局 for the 声明 that Brooks killed or 負傷させるd fifteen men in いっそう少なく than a month after his arrival. Now Emanuel is a preacher (if he is still in the land of the living; I saw him last at Clarendon, Texas, ten years or so ago), but I cannot やめる swallow that "fifteen." Still, he had a man for breakfast now and then and on one occasion four.

Brooks, by the way, was assistant 保安官. It was the 政策 of the 公式の／役人s of these wild frontier towns to elect as 保安官 some 目だつ 殺し屋, on the theory that desperadoes would 尊敬（する）・点 his prowess or if they did not would get the worst of the 遭遇（する）.

Abilene, for instance, chose "Wild 法案" Hickok. Austin had its Ben Thompson. によれば Bat Masterson, Thompson was the most dangerous man with a gun の中で all the bad men he knew—and Bat knew them all. Ben was an Englishman who struck Texas while still young. He fought as a Confederate under Kirby Smith during the Civil War and under Shelby for Maximilian. Later he was city 保安官 at Austin. Thompson was a man of the most 冷静な／正味の effrontery. On one occasion, during a cattlemen's 条約, a 祝宴 was held at the 主要な hotel. The 地元の 下院議員, a friend of Thompson, was not 招待するd. Ben took exception to this and …に出席するd in person. By way of pleasantry he 発射 the plates in 前線 of the diners. Later one of those 現在の made humorous comment. "I always thought Ben was a game man. But what did he do? Did he 停止する the whole 条約 of a thousand cattlemen? No, sir. He waited till he got forty or fifty of us poor fellows alone before he turned loose his wolf."

Of all the bad men and desperadoes produced by Texas, not one of them, not even John Wesley Hardin himself, was more 恐れるd than Ben Thompson. 郡保安官s 避けるd serving 令状s of 逮捕（する） on him. It is 記録，記録的な／記録するd that once, when the 郡 法廷，裁判所 was in 開会／開廷／会期 with a 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金 against him on the docket, Thompson 棒 into the room on a mustang. He 屈服するd pleasantly to the 裁判官 and 法廷，裁判所 公式の／役人s.

"Here I am, gents, and I'll lay all I'm 価値（がある） that there's no 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金 against me. Am I 権利? Speak up, gents. I'm a little deaf."

There was a dead silence until at last the clerk of the 法廷，裁判所 murmured, "No 告発（する），告訴（する）／料金."

A story is told that on one occasion Ben Thompson met his match in the person of a young English remittance man playing cards with him. The remittance man thought he caught Thompson cheating and indiscreetly said so. 即時に Thompson's .44 covered him. For some unknown 推論する／理由 the gambler gave the lad a chance to 撤回する.

"Take it 支援する—and quick," he said grimly.

Every game in the house was 一時停止するd while all 注目する，もくろむs turned on the dare-devil boy and the hard-直面するd desperado. The remittance man went white, half rose from his seat, and 押すd his 長，率いる across the （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する toward the revolver.

"Shoot and be damned. I say you cheat," he cried hoarsely.

Thompson hesitated, laughed, 押すd the revolver 支援する into its holster, and ordered the youngster out of the house.

Perhaps the most amazing escape on 記録，記録的な／記録する is that when Thompson, 解雇する／砲火／射撃d at by 示す Wilson at a distance of ten feet from a 二塁打-barrelled shotgun 負担d with buckshot, whirled 即時に, killed him, and an instant later 発射 through the forehead Wilson's friend Mathews, though the latter had ducked behind the 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業 to get away. The second 発射 was guesswork 加える quick thinking and 正確な 目的（とする）. Ben was killed a little later, in company with his friend King Fisher, another bad man, at the Palace Theatre. A 得点する／非難する／２０ of 発射s were 注ぐd into them by a dozen men waiting in 待ち伏せ／迎撃する. Both men had become so dangerous that their enemies could not afford to let them live.

King Fisher was the humorous gentleman who put up a signboard at the fork of a public road 耐えるing the legend:

THIS IS KING FISHER'S ROAD.
TAKE THE OTHER

It is said that those travelling that way followed his advice. The other road might be a mile or two さらに先に, but they were in no hurry. Another amusing little episode in King Fisher's career is told. He had had some slight difficulty with a 確かな bald-長，率いるd man. Fisher 発射 him and carelessly gave the 推論する／理由 that he 手配中の，お尋ね者 to see whether a 弾丸 would ちらりと見ること from a shiny pate.

El Paso in its wild days chose Dallas Stoudenmire for 保安官, and after he had been killed, John Selman. Both of them were 公式文書，認めるd 殺し屋s. During Selman's régime John Wesley Hardin （機の）カム to town. Hardin had twenty-seven notches on his gun and was the worst man 殺し屋 Texas had ever produced. He was at the 妨げる／法廷，弁護士業 of a saloon shaking dice when Selman 発射 him from behind. One year later 副 部隊d 明言する／公表するs 保安官 George Scarborough killed Selman in a duel. すぐに after this Scarborough was 殺害された in a gun fight by "Kid" Curry, an Arizona 強盗.

What was true of these towns was true, too, of Albuquerque and Las Vegas and Tombstone. Each of them chose for peace officers men who were "sudden death" with a gun. Dodge did 正確に／まさに the same thing. Even a 部分的な／不平等な 名簿（に載せる）／表（にあげる） of its 連続する 保安官s reads like a fighting roster. In 新規加入 to 橋（渡しをする）s and Brooks may be 指名するd Ed and Bat Masterson, Wyatt Earp, Billy Tilghman, Ben Daniels, Mysterious Dave Mathers, T. C. Nixon, Luke Short, Charley Bassett, W. H. Harris, and the Sughrue brothers, all of them famous as 闘士，戦闘機s in a day when courage and proficiency with 武器s were a 事柄 of course. On one occasion the superintendent of the Sante Fe 示唆するd to the city dads of Dodge that it might be a good thing to 雇う 保安官s いっそう少なく 悪名高い. Dodge begged leave to 異なる. It felt that the best way to "settle the hash" of desperadoes was to 炭坑，オーケストラ席 against them fighting machines more efficient, bad men more deadly than themselves.

The word "bad" does not やむを得ず 暗示する evil. One who held the epithet was known as one dangerous to …に反対する. He was unafraid, deadly with a gun, and hard as nails. He might be evil, callous, 背信の, revengeful as an Apache. Dave Mathers fitted this description. He might be a good man, kindly, gentle, never taking more than his fighting chance. This was Billy Tilghman to a T.

We are keeping Billy Brooks waiting. But let that go. Let us look first at "Mysterious Dave." （頭が）ひょいと動く Wright has 始める，決める it 負かす／撃墜する that Mathers had more dead men to his credit than any other man in the West. He slew seven by actual count in one night, in one house, によれば Wright. Mathers had a very bad 評判. But his courage could 炎 up magnificently. While he was 副 保安官 word （機の）カム that the Henry ギャング（団） of desperadoes were terrorizing a dance hall. Into that hall walked Dave, beside his 長，指導者 Tom Carson. Five minutes later out reeled Carson, both 武器 broken, his 団体／死体 発射 through and through, a man with only minutes to live. When the smoke in the hall （疑いを）晴らすd away Mathers might have been seen beside two 手錠d 囚人s, one of them 負傷させるd. In a circle 一連の会議、交渉／完成する him were four dead cowpunchers of the Henry outfit.

"Uncle" Billy Tilghman died the other day at Cromwell, Oklahoma, a 犠牲者 of his own fearlessness. He was 発射 to death while taking a revolver from a drunken 禁止 スパイ／執行官. If he had been like many other bad men he would have 発射 the fellow 負かす／撃墜する at the first 調印する of danger. But that was never Tilghman's way. It was his habit to make 逮捕（する）s without 製図／抽選 a gun. He cleaned up Dodge during the three years while he was 保安官. He broke up the Doolin ギャング（団）, 殺人，大当り 法案 Raidler and "Little" 刑事 in personal duels and 逮捕（する）ing 法案 Doolin the leader. Bat Masterson said that during Tilghman's 条件 as 郡保安官 of Lincoln 郡, Oklahoma, he killed, 逮捕（する）d, or drove from the country more 犯罪のs than any other 公式の／役人 that section ever had. Yet "Uncle" Billy never used a gun except reluctantly. Time and again he gave the 犯罪の first 発射, hoping the man would 降伏する rather than fight. Of all the old frontier 郡保安官s 非，不，無 持つ／拘留するs a higher place than Billy Tilghman.

After which 転換 we return to Billy Brooks, a "gent" of an impatient temperament, not used to waiting, and 顕著に quick on the 誘発する／引き起こす. Mr. Dubbs 記録，記録的な／記録するs that late one evening in the winter of '72-'73 he returned to Dodge with two 負担s of buffalo meat. He finished his 商売／仕事, ate supper, and started to smoke a postprandial 麻薬を吸う. The sound of a fusillade in an 隣接するing dance hall 利益／興味d him since he had been 奪うd of the 楽しみs of 主要都市の life for some time and had had to depend upon Indians for excitement. (Incidentally, it may be について言及するd that they furnished him a reasonable 量. Not long after this three of his men were caught, spread-eagled, and 拷問d by Indians. Dubbs escaped after a hair-raising ride and arrived at Adobe 塀で囲むs in time to 参加する the historic defence of that 地位，任命する by a handful of buffalo hunters against many hundred tribesmen.) From the building burst four men. They started across the 鉄道／強行採決する 跡をつける to another dance hall, one たびたび（訪れる）d by Brooks. Dubbs heard the men について言及する the 指名する of Brooks, coupling it with an 誓い. Another buffalo hunter 指名するd Fred Singer joined Dubbs. They followed the strangers, and just before the four reached the dance hall Singer shouted a 警告 to the 保安官. This annoyed the unknown four, and they 敏速に 交流d 発射s with the buffalo hunters. What then took place was startling in the sudden 演劇 of it.

Billy Brooks stood in bold 救済 in the doorway, a revolver in each 手渡す. He 解雇する／砲火／射撃d so 急速な／放蕩な that Dubbs says the sound was like a company 発射する／解雇するing 武器s. When the smoke （疑いを）晴らすd Brooks still stood in the same place. Two of the strangers were dead and two mortally 負傷させるd. They were brothers. They had come from Hays City to avenge the death of a fifth brother 発射 負かす／撃墜する by Brooks some time before.

Mr. Brooks had a fondness for the fair sex. He and Browney, the yard master, took a fancy to the same girl. Captain Drew, she was called, and she preferred Browney. その結果 Brooks 自然に 発射 him in the 長，率いる. Perversely, to the surprise of everybody, Browney 回復するd and was soon 支援する at his old 職業.

Brooks seems to have held no grudge at him for making light of his markmanship in this manner. At any 率, his next 事件／事情／状勢 was with Kirk Jordan, the buffalo hunter.

This was a very different 商売／仕事. Jordan had been in a hundred tight 穴を開けるs. He had fought Indians time and again. Professional 殺し屋s had no terror for him. He threw 負かす／撃墜する his big buffalo gun on Brooks, and the latter took cover. バーレル／樽s of water had been placed along the 主要な／長／主犯 streets for 解雇する／砲火／射撃 保護. These had saved several lives during 狙撃 捨てるs. Brooks ducked behind one, and the ball from Jordan's gun 急落（する），激減（する）d into it. The 保安官 dodged into a 蓄える／店, out of the 後部 door, and into a livery stable. He was hidden under a bed. 式のs! for a large 評判 gone 微光ing. Mr. Brooks fled to the fort, took the train from the 味方するing, and shook forever the dust of Dodge from his feet. Whither he 出発／死d deponent sayeth not.

How do I explain this? I don't. I 記録，記録的な／記録する a fact. Many gunmen were at one time or another 支配する to these panics during which the yellow streak showed. Not all of them by any means, but a very かなりの 百分率. They swaggered boldly, killed recklessly. Then one day some 静かな little man with a 冷淡な gray 注目する，もくろむ called the turn on them, after which they oozed out of the surrounding scenery.

Owen P. White gives it on the 当局 of Charlie Siringo that Bat Masterson sang small when Clay Allison of the Panhandle, he of the 井戸／弁護士席-notched gun, drifted into Dodge and 問い合わせd for the city 保安官. But the old-timers at Dodge do not 耐える this out. Bat was at the Adobe 塀で囲むs fight, one of fourteen men who stood off five hundred bucks of the Cheyenne, Comanche, and Kiowa tribes. He scouted for Miles. He was elected 郡保安官 of Ford 郡, with （警察，軍隊などの）本部 at Dodge when only twenty-two years of age It was a 堅い assignment, and Bat 遂行する／発効させるd it to the satisfaction of all 関心d except the element he cowed.

本人自身で, I never met Bat until his 殺人，大当り days were past. He was 取引，協定ing faro at a 賭事ing house in Denver when I, a young reporter, first had the 楽しみ of looking into his 冷淡な blue 注目する，もくろむs. It was a 著名な fact that all the frontier bad men had 注目する，もくろむs either gray or blue, often a faded blue, expressionless, hard as jade.

It is only fair to Bat to say that the old-timers of Dodge do not 受託する the Siringo point of 見解（をとる） about him Wright said of him that he was 絶対 fearless and no trouble hunter. "Bat is a gentleman by instinct, of pleasant manners, good 演説（する）／住所, and 穏やかな until 誘発するd, and then, for God's sake, look out. He is a leader of men, has much natural ability, and good hard ありふれた sense. There is nothing low about him. He is high-トンd and 幅の広い-minded, 冷静な／正味の and 勇敢に立ち向かう." I give this opinion for what it is 価値（がある）.

In any 事例／患者, he was a most efficient 郡保安官. Dave Rudabaugh, later associated with Billy the Kid in New Mexico, 行う／開催する／段階d a train 強盗 at Kinsley, Kansas, a 領土 not in Bat s 裁判権. However, Bat 始める，決める out in 追跡 with a posse. A 近づく-blizzard was 広範囲にわたる the country. Bat made for Lovell's cattle （軍の）野営地，陣営, on the chance that the 強盗団の一味 would be 軍隊d to take 避難所 there. He had a 深い sense of 忠義 to his friends. On two separate occasions he returned to Dodge, after having left the town, to straighten out difficulties for his friends or to avenge them. The first time was when Luke Short, who ran a 賭事ing house in Dodge, had a difficulty with 市長 Webster and his 公式の／役人 family. Luke appears to have held the opinion that the cards were stacked against him and that this was a trouble out of which he could not shoot himself. He wired Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp to come to Dodge. They did, …を伴ってd by another friend or two. The 市長 made peace on 条件 dictated by Short.

Bat's second return to Dodge was 原因（となる）d by a wire from his brother James, who ran a dance hall in 共同 with a man 指名するd Peacock. Bat arrived at eleven one sunny morning, another 銃器携帯者／殺しや at heel. At three o'clock he entrained for Tombstone, Arizona, James beside him. The interval had been a busy one. Tom Smith, one of the gamest men and best officers who ever wore a 星／主役にする on the frontier, was killed in the 業績／成果 of his 義務. 陸軍大佐 Breakenridge says that Smith, 保安官 of Abilene before "Wild 法案," was the gamest man he ever knew. He was a powerful, 運動競技の man who would 逮捕（する）, himself 非武装の, the most desperate characters. He once told Breakenridge that anyone could bring in a dead man but it took a good officer to take lawbreakers while they were alive. In this he 異なるd from Hickok who did not take chances. He brought his men in dead. Nixon, assistant 保安官 at Dodge, was 殺人d by "Mysterious Dave" Mathers, who himself once held the same 地位，任命する. Ed Masterson, after 陳列する，発揮するing 目だつ courage many times, was mortally 負傷させるd April 9, 1878, by two desperate men, Jack Wagner and Alf Walker, who were terrorizing 前線 Street. Bat reached the scene a few minutes later and heard the story. As soon as his brother had died Bat went after the desperadoes, met them, and killed them both. Bat knew 法案's nurse and arranged a 計画（する） for （選挙などの）運動をする. A sham 戦う／戦い was 行う／開催する／段階d at the big dance hall, during the excitement of which Bat and the nurse carried the 負傷させるd man to the train, got him to a sleeper, and into a bed. Buffalo 法案 met them next day at North Platte. He had relays of teams 駅／配置するd on the road, and he and Bat guarded the sick man during the long ride, bringing him 安全に to Dodge.

Emanuel Dubbs ran a roadhouse not far from Dodge about this time. He was practising with his six-shooter one day when a splendidly built young six-footer 棒 up to his place. The stranger watched him as he 解雇する／砲火／射撃d at the tin cans he had put on 盗品故買者 地位，任命するs. Presently the young fellow 示唆するd he throw a couple of the cans up in the 空気／公表する. Dubbs did so. Out flashed the stranger's revolvers. There was a roar of 爆発するing 発射s. Dubbs 選ぶd up the cans. Four 発射s had been 解雇する／砲火／射撃d. Two 弾丸s had 演習d through each can.

Life at Dodge was not all 悲劇の. The six-shooter roared in the land a good 取引，協定, but there were very many 国民s who went 静かに about their 商売／仕事 and took no part in the night life of the town. It was 完全に optional with the individual. The little city had its 合法的 theatres 同様に as its hurdy-gurdy houses and 賭事ing dens. There was the Lady Gay, for instance, a popular vaudeville 訴える手段／行楽地. There were 井戸／弁護士席-…に出席するd churches. But Dodge boiled so with exuberant young life, often inflamed by bad アルコール飲料, that both theatre and church were likely to be the scenes of 予期しない 爆発s.

A drunken cowboy became annoyed at Eddie Foy. While the comedian was reciting "Kalamazoo in Michigan" the puncher began 砲撃するing the frail 塀で囲むs from outside with a .45 Colt's revolver. The 殺人，大当り of 行方不明になる Dora 手渡す, a young actress of much 約束, was regretted by everybody in Dodge. A young fellow 指名するd Kennedy, the son of a rich cattleman, 発射 her unintentionally while he was trying to 殺人 James Kelly. He fled. A posse composed of 郡保安官 Masterson, William Tilghman, Wyatt Earp, and Charles Bassett took the 追跡する. They 逮捕（する）d the man after 負傷させるing him 猛烈に. He was brought 支援する to Dodge, 回復するd, and escaped. His ピストル arm was useless, but he used the other 井戸／弁護士席 enough to 殺す several other 犠牲者s before someone made an end of him.

The gay good spirits of Dodge 設立する continual 表現 in practical jokes. The wilder these were the better pleased was the town. "Mysterious Dave" was the central 人物／姿／数字 in one. "They were 権利 excited an' didn't know straight up," an old-timer explained. "Dave, he looked so whipped his ears flopped. Finally he rose, an' said, 'I've got yore company, friends. Now, while we're all saved I reckon we better start straight for heaven. First off, the preacher; then the 助祭s; me last.' Then Dave whips out a whoppin' big gun and starts shootin'. The preacher went 権利 through a window an' took it with him. He was sure in some hurry. The 助祭s 追跡（する）d cover. Seemed like they was willin' to 延期する taking that through ticket to heaven. After that they never did worry any more about Dave's soul."

Many rustlers gathered around Dodge in those days. The most 悪名高い of these was a ギャング（団） of more than thirty under the leadership of Dutch Henry and Tom Owens, two of the most desperate 無法者s ever known in Kansas A posse was 組織するd to run 負かす／撃墜する this ギャング（団） under the leadership of Dubbs, who had lost some of his 在庫／株. Before starting, the posse telephoned Hays City to 組織する a company to を回避する the rustlers. Twenty miles west of Hays the posse overtook the rustlers. A 血まみれの 戦う／戦い 続いて起こるd, during which Owens and several other 無法者s were killed and Dutch Henry 負傷させるd six times. Several of the posse were also 発射. The story has a curious sequel. Many years later, when Emanuel Dubbs was 郡 裁判官 of Wheeler 郡, Texas, Dutch Henry （機の）カム to his house and stayed there several days. He was a 完全に 改革（する）d man. Not many years ago Dutch Henry died in Colorado. He was a man with many good 質s. Even in his 無法者 days he had many friends の中で the 法律-がまんするing 国民s.

After the 戦う／戦い with the Henry-Owens ギャング（団） rustlers operated much more 静かに, but they did not 中止する stealing. One night three men were hanged to a cottonwood on Saw スピードを出す／記録につける Creek, ten or twelve miles from Dodge. One of these was a young man of a good family who had drifted into rustling and had been carried away by the excitement of it. Another of the three was the son of Tom Owens. To this day the place is known as Horse どろぼう Cañon. During its years of 繁栄 many 著名な men visited Dodge 含むing Generals Sherman and Sheridan, 大統領 Hayes and General Miles. Its 評判 had 延長するd far and wide. It was the wild and woolly cowboy 資本／首都 of the 南西, a place to quicken the 血 of any man. Nearly all that gay, hard-riding company of cowpunchers, buffalo hunters, bad men, and 開拓するs have 消えるd into yesterday's seven thousand years. But certainly Dodge once had its day and its night of glory. No more 引き裂く-roaring town ever bucked the tiger.
