27. CRITICISM AND SELF-CRITICISM

The 共産主義者 Party does not 恐れる 批評 because we are Marxists, the truth is on our 味方する, and the basic 集まりs, the 労働者s and 小作農民s, are on our 味方する.

Speech at the Chinese 共産主義者 Party's 国家の 会議/協議会 on 宣伝 Work  (March 12, 1957), 1st pocket ed., p. 14.

Thoroughgoing materialists are fearless; we hope that all our fellow 闘士,戦闘機s will courageously shoulder their 責任/義務s and 打ち勝つ all difficulties, 恐れるing no 後退s or gibes, nor hesitating to 非難する us 共産主義者s and give us their suggestions. "He who is not afraid of death by a thousand 削減(する)s dares to unhorse the emperor" - this is the indomitable spirit needed in our struggle to build 社会主義 and 共産主義.

Ibid.,  p. 16.

We have the Marxist-Leninist 武器 of 批評 and self-批評. We can get tid of a bad style and keep the good.

"報告(する)/憶測 to the Second 全員出席の 開会/開廷/会期 of the Seventh Central 委員会 of the 共産主義者 Party of 中国" (March 5, 1949), Selected 作品,  Vol. IV, p. 374.

Conscientious practice of self-批評 is still another hallmark distinguishing our Party from all other 政党s. As we say, dust will 蓄積する if a room is not cleaned 定期的に, our 直面するs will get dirty if they are not washed 定期的に. Our comrades' minds and our Party's work may also collect dust, and also need 広範囲にわたる and washing. The proverb "Running water is never stale and a door-hinge is never worm-eaten" means that constant 動議 妨げるs the inroads of germs and other organisms. To check up 定期的に on our work and in the 過程 develop a democratic style of work, to 恐れる neither 批評 nor self-批評, and to 適用する such good popular Chinese maxims as "Say all you know and say it without reserve", "非難する not the (衆議院の)議長 but be 警告するd by his words" and "訂正する mistakes if you have committed them and guard against them if you have not" - this is the only 効果的な way to 妨げる all 肉親,親類d of political dust and germs from 汚染するing the minds of our comrades and the 団体/死体 of our Party.

"On 連合 政府" (April 24, 1945), Selected 作品,  Vol. III, pp. 316-17.

対立 and struggle between ideas of different 肉親,親類d 絶えず occur within the Party; this is a reflection within the Party of contradictions between classes and between the new and the old in society. If there were no contradictions in the Party and no 観念的な struggles to 解決する them, the Party's life would corne to an end.

"On Contradiction" (August 1937), Selected 作品,  Vol. I, p. 317.

We stand for active 観念的な struggle because it is the 武器 for 確実にするing まとまり within the Party and the 革命の organizations in the 利益/興味 of our fight. Every 共産主義者 and 革命の should (問題を)取り上げる this 武器.

But liberalism 拒絶するs 観念的な struggle and stands for unprincipled peace, thus giving rise to a decadent, philistine 態度 and bringing about political degeneration in 確かな 部隊s and individuals in the Party and the 革命の organizations.

"戦闘 Liberalism" (September 7, 1937), Selected 作品,  Vol. II, p. 31.

In …に反対するing subjectivism, sectarianism and stereotyped Party 令状ing we must have in mind two 目的s: hrst, "learn from past mistakes to 避ける 未来 ones", and second, "cure the sickness to save the 患者". The mistakes of the past must be exposed without sparing anyone's sensibilities; it is necessary to analyse and 非難する what was bad in the past with a 科学の 態度 so that work in the 未来 will be done more carefully and done better. This is what is meant by "learn from past mistakes to 避ける 未来 ones". But our 目的(とする) in exposing errors and 非難するing shortcomings, like that of a doctor curing a sickness, is 単独で to save the 患者 and not to doctor him to death. A person with appendicitis is saved when the 外科医 除去するs his 虫垂. So long as a person who has made mistakes does not hide his sickness for 恐れる of 治療 or 固執する in his mistakes until he is beyond cure, so long as he honestly and 心から wishes to be cured and to mend his ways, we should welcome him and cure his sickness so that he can become a good comrade. We can never 後継する if we just let ourselves go and 激しく打ちのめす at him. In 扱う/治療するing an 観念的な or a political malady, one must never be rough and 無分別な but must 可決する・採択する the approach of "curing the sickness to save the 患者", which is the only 訂正する and 効果的な method.

"修正する the Party's Style of Work" (February 1, 1942), Selected 作品,  Vol. III, p. 50.*

Another point that should be について言及するd in 関係 with inner-Party 批評 is that some comrades ignore the major 問題/発行するs and conhne their attention to minor points when they make their 批評. They do not understand that the main 仕事 of 批評 is to point out political and 組織の mistakes. As to personal shortcomings, unless they are 関係のある to political and 組織の mistakes, there is no need to be overcritical or the comrades 関心d will be at a loss as to what to do. Moreover, once such 批評 develops, there is the 広大な/多数の/重要な danger that within the Party attention will be concentrated 排他的に on minor faults, and everyone will become timid and overcautious and forget the Party's political 仕事s.

"On 訂正するing Mistaken Ideas in the Party" (December 1929), Selected 作品,  Vol. I, pp. 111-12.*

In inner-Party 批評, guard against subjectivism, arbitrariness and the vulgarization of 批評; 声明s should be based on facts and 批評 should 強調する/ストレス the political 味方する.

Ibid.,  p. 112.*

Inner-Party 批評 is a 武器 for 強化するing the Party organization and 増加するing its hghting capacity. In the Party organization of the Red Army, however, 批評 is not always of this character, and いつかs turns into personal attack. As a result, it 損害賠償金 the Party organization 同様に as individuals. This is a manifestation of petty-bourgeois individualism. The method of 是正 is to help Party members understand that the 目的 of 批評 is to 増加する the Party's fighting capacity ーするために 達成する victory in the class struggle and that it should not be used as a means of personal attack.

Ibid.,  p. 110.

If we have shortcomings, we are not afraid to have them pointed out and 非難するd, because we serve the people. Anyone, no 事柄 who, may point out our shortcomings. If he is 権利, we will 訂正する them. If what he 提案するs will 利益 the people, we will 行為/法令/行動する upon it.

"Serve the People" (September 8, 1941), Selected 作品,  Vol. III, P. 227.

As we Chinese 共産主義者s, who base all our 活動/戦闘s on the highest 利益/興味s of the broadest 集まりs of the Chinese people and who are fully 納得させるd of the 司法(官) of our 原因(となる), never 妨げる at any personal sacrifice and are ready at all times to give our lives for the 原因(となる), can we be 気が進まない to discard any idea, viewpoint, opinion or method which is not ふさわしい to the needs of the people? Can we be willing to 許す political dust and germs to dirty our clean 直面するs or eat into our healthy organisms? Countless 革命の 殉教者s have laid 負かす/撃墜する their lives in the 利益/興味s of the people, and our hearts are filled with 苦痛 as we the living think of them - can there be any personal 利益/興味, then, that we would not sacrifice or any error that we would not discard?

"On 連合 政府" (April 24, 1945), Selected 作品,  Vol. III, p. 317.*

We must not become complacent over any success. We should check our complacency and 絶えず 非難する our shortcomings, just as we should wash our 直面するs or sweep the 床に打ち倒す every day to 除去する the dirt and keep them clean.

"Get 組織するd!" (November 29, 1943), Selected 作品,  Vol. III. p. 160.*

As for 批評, do it in good time; don't get into the habit of 非難するing only after the event.

On the Question of 農業の Co-操作/手術  (July 31, 1955), 3rd ed., p. 25.

Taught by mistakes and 後退s, we have become wiser and 扱う our 事件/事情/状勢s better. It is hard for any 政党 or person to 避ける mistakes, but we should make as few as possible. Once a mistake is made, we should 訂正する it, and the more quickly and 完全に the better.

"On the People's Democratic 独裁政治" (June 30, 1949), Selected 作品,  Vol. IV, p. 422.
