LABOR, n. One of the 過程s by which A acquires 所有物/資産/財産 for B.

LAND, n. A part of the earth's surface, considered as 所有物/資産/財産. The theory that land is 所有物/資産/財産 支配する to 私的な 所有権 and 支配(する)/統制する is the 創立/基礎 of modern society, and is eminently worthy of the superstructure. LECTURER, n. One with his 手渡す in your pocket, his tongue in your ear and his 約束 in your patience.

LEGACY, n. A gift from one who is legging it out of this vale of 涙/ほころびs.

LEONINE, adj. Unlike a menagerie lion. Leonine 詩(を作る)s are those in which a word in the middle of a line rhymes with a word at the end, as in this famous passage from Bella Peeler Silcox:

    Cries Pluto, 'twixt his snores:  "O tempora! O mores!"

LEVIATHAN, n. An enormous aquatic animal について言及するd by 職業. LEXICOGRAPHER, n. LICKSPITTLE, n. A useful functionary, not infrequently 設立する editing a newspaper. LIFE, n. A spiritual pickle 保存するing the 団体/死体 from decay. We live in daily 逮捕 of its loss; yet when lost it is not 行方不明になるd. The question, "Is life 価値(がある) living?" has been much discussed; 特に by those who think it is not, many of whom have written at 広大な/多数の/重要な length in support of their 見解(をとる) and by careful observance of the 法律s of health enjoyed for long 条件 of years the 栄誉(を受ける)s of successful 論争.

LIVER, n. A large red 組織/臓器 thoughtfully 供給するd by nature to be bilious with. The 感情s and emotions which every literary anatomist now knows to haunt the heart were anciently believed to infest the 肝臓; and even Gascoygne, speaking of the emotional 味方する of human nature, calls it "our hepaticall parte." It was at one time considered the seat of life; hence its 指名する - 肝臓, the thing we live with. The 肝臓 is heaven's best gift to the goose; without it that bird would be unable to 供給(する) us with the Strasbourg pate.

LL.D. Letters 示すing the degree Legumptionorum Doctor, one learned in 法律s, gifted with 合法的な gumption. Some 疑惑 is cast upon this derivation by the fact that the 肩書を与える was 以前は LL.d., and conferred only upon gentlemen distinguished for their wealth. At the date of this 令状ing Columbia University is considering the expediency of making another degree for clergymen, in place of the old D.D. - Damnator Diaboli. The new 栄誉(を受ける) will be known as Sanctorum Custus, and written $$c. The 指名する of the Rev. John Satan has been 示唆するd as a suitable 受取人 by a lover of consistency, who points out that Professor Harry Thurston つつく/ペック has long enjoyed the advantage of a degree.

LOCK-AND-KEY, n. The distinguishing 装置 of civilization and enlightenment.

LODGER, n. A いっそう少なく popular 指名する for the Second Person of that delectable newspaper Trinity, the Roomer, the Bedder, and the Mealer.

LOGIC, n. The art of thinking and 推論する/理由ing in strict 一致 with the 制限s and incapacities of the human 誤解. The basic of logic is the syllogism, consisting of a major and a minor 前提 and a 結論 - thus:

    Major 前提:  Sixty men can do a piece of work sixty times as 
quickly as one man.
    Minor 前提:  One man can dig a posthole in sixty seconds; 
therefore -
    結論:  Sixty men can dig a posthole in one second.
This may be called the syllogism arithmetical, in which, by 連合させるing logic and mathematics, we 得る a 二塁打 certainty and are twice blessed.

LOGOMACHY, n. A war in which the 武器s are words and the 負傷させるs 穴をあけるs in the swim-bladder of self-esteem - a 肉親,親類d of contest in which, the vanquished 存在 unconscious of 敗北・負かす, the 勝利者 is 否定するd the reward of success.

    'Tis said by divers of the scholar-men
    That poor Salmasius died of Milton's pen.
    式のs! we cannot know if this is true,
    For reading Milton's wit we 死なせる/死ぬ too.

Enraged all the more by this mischance, he 命令(する)d that the ungrateful courtier be thrown into 刑務所,拘置所, and that the glass be 修理d and taken 支援する to his own palace; and this was done. But when the king looked again on the mirror he saw not his image as before, but only the 人物/姿/数字 of a 栄冠を与えるd ass, having a 血まみれの 包帯 on one of its 妨げる hooves - as the artificers and all who had looked upon it had before discerned but 恐れるd to 報告(する)/憶測. Taught 知恵 and charity, the king 回復するd his courtier to liberty, had the mirror 始める,決める into the 支援する of the 王位 and 統治するd many years with 司法(官) and humility; and one day when he fell asleep in death while on the 王位, the whole 法廷,裁判所 saw in the mirror the luminous 人物/姿/数字 of an angel, which remains to this day.

LOQUACITY, n. A disorder which (判決などを)下すs the 苦しんでいる人 unable to 抑制(する) his tongue when you wish to talk.

LORD, n. In American society, an English tourist above the 明言する/公表する of a costermonger, as, lord 'Aberdasher, Lord Hartisan and so 前へ/外へ. LORE, n. Learning - 特に that sort which is not derived from a 正規の/正選手 course of 指示/教授/教育 but comes of the reading of occult 調書をとる/予約するs, or by nature. This latter is 一般的に 指定するd as folk-lore and embraces popularly myths and superstitions. LUNARIAN, n. An inhabitant of the moon, as distinguished from Lunatic, one whom the moon 住むs. The Lunarians have been 述べるd by Lucian, Locke and other 観察者/傍聴者s, but without much 協定. For example, Bragellos avers their anatomical 身元 with Man, but Professor Newcomb says they are more like the hill tribes of Vermont.

LYRE, n. An 古代の 器具 of 拷問. The word is now used in a figurative sense to denote the poetic faculty, as in the に引き続いて fiery lines of our 広大な/多数の/重要な poet, Ella Wheeler Wilcox:

MAGPIE, n. A bird whose thievish disposition 示唆するd to someone that it might be taught to talk.

MAIDEN, n. A young person of the 不公平な sex (麻薬)常用者d to clewless 行為/行う and 見解(をとる)s that madden to 罪,犯罪. The genus has a wide geographical 配当, 存在 設立する wherever sought and 嘆き悲しむd wherever 設立する. MOLECULE, n. The ultimate, indivisible 部隊 of 事柄. It is distinguished from the 血球, also the ultimate, indivisible 部隊 of 事柄, by a closer resemblance to the 原子, also the ultimate, indivisible 部隊 of 事柄. Three 広大な/多数の/重要な 科学の theories of the structure of the universe are the molecular, the corpuscular and the 原子の. A fourth 断言するs, with Haeckel, the condensation of precipitation of 事柄 from ether - whose 存在 is 証明するd by the condensation of precipitation. The 現在の 傾向 of 科学の thought is toward the theory of イオンs. The イオン 異なるs from the 分子, the 血球 and the 原子 in that it is an イオン. A fifth theory is held by idiots, but it is doubtful if they know any more about the 事柄 than the others.

MONAD, n. The ultimate, indivisible 部隊 of 事柄. (See 分子.) によれば Leibnitz, as nearly as he seems willing to be understood, the monad has 団体/死体 without 本体,大部分/ばら積みの, and mind without manifestation - Leibnitz knows him by the innate 力/強力にする of considering. He has 設立するd upon him a theory of the universe, which the creature 耐えるs without 憤慨, for the monad is a gentlmean. Small as he is, the monad 含む/封じ込めるs all the 力/強力にするs and 可能性s needful to his 進化 into a German philosopher of the first class - altogether a very 有能な little fellow. MORE, adj. The comparative degree of too much.

MOUSE, n. An animal which まき散らすs its path with fainting women. As in Rome Christians were thrown to the lions, so centuries earlier in Otumwee, the most 古代の and famous city of the world, 女性(の) 異端者s were thrown to the mice. Jakak-Zotp, the historian, the only Otumwump whose writings have descended to us, says that these 殉教者s met their death with little dignity and much exertion. NOTORIETY, n. The fame of one's competitor for public 栄誉(を受ける)s. The 肉親,親類d of renown most accessible and 許容できる to mediocrity. A Jacob's-ladder 主要な to the vaudeville 行う/開催する/段階, with angels 上がるing and descending.

NOUMENON, n. That which 存在するs, as distinguished from that which 単に seems to 存在する, the latter 存在 a 現象. The noumenon is a bit difficult to 位置を示す; it can be apprehended only be a 過程 of 推論する/理由ing - which is a 現象. にもかかわらず, the 発見 and 解説,博覧会 of noumena 申し込む/申し出 a rich field for what Lewes calls "the endless variety and excitement of philosophic thought." Hurrah (therefore) for the noumenon!

NOVEL, n. A short story padded. A 種類 of composition 耐えるing the same relation to literature that the panorama 耐えるs to art. As it is too long to be read at a sitting the impressions made by its 連続する parts are successively effaced, as in the panorama. まとまり, totality of 影響, is impossible; for besides the few pages last read all that is carried in mind is the mere 陰謀(を企てる) of what has gone before. To the romance the novel is what photography is to 絵. Its distinguishing 原則, probability, corresponds to the literal actuality of the photograph and puts it distinctly into the 部類 of 報告(する)/憶測ing; 反して the 解放する/自由な wing of the romancer enables him to 開始する to such 高度s of imagination as he may be fitted to 達成する; and the first three 必須のs of the literary art are imagination, imagination and imagination. The art of 令状ing novels, such as it was, is long dead everywhere except in Russia, where it is new. Peace to its ashes - some of which have a large sale.

OATH, n. In 法律, a solemn 控訴,上告 to the Deity, made binding upon the 良心 by a 刑罰,罰則 for 偽証.

OBLIVION, n. The 明言する/公表する or 条件 in which the wicked 中止する from struggling and the dreary are at 残り/休憩(する). Fame's eternal ダンピング ground. 冷淡な 貯蔵 for high hopes. A place where ambitious authors 会合,会う their 作品 without pride and their betters without envy. A 寄宿舎 without an alarm clock.

OBSERVATORY, n. A place where 天文学者s conjecture away the guesses of their 前任者s.

OBSESSED, p.p. 悩ますd by an evil spirit, like the Gadarene swine and other critics. Obsession was once more ありふれた than it is now. Arasthus tells of a 小作農民 who was 占領するd by a different devil for every day in the week, and on Sundays by two. They were frequently seen, always walking in his 影をつくる/尾行する, when he had one, but were finally driven away by the village notary, a 宗教上の man; but they took the 小作農民 with them, for he 消えるd utterly. A devil thrown out of a woman by the 大司教 of Rheims ran through the trees, 追求するd by a hundred persons, until the open country was reached, where by a leap higher than a church spire he escaped into a bird. A chaplain in Cromwell's army exorcised a 兵士's obsessing devil by throwing the 兵士 into the water, when the devil (機の)カム to the surface. The 兵士, unfortunately, did not.

OBSOLETE, adj. No longer used by the timid. Said 主として of words. A word which some lexicographer has 示すd obsolete is ever thereafter an 反対する of dread and loathing to the fool writer, but if it is a good word and has no exact modern 同等(の) 平等に good, it is good enough for the good writer. Indeed, a writer's 態度 toward "obsolete" words is as true a 手段 of his literary ability as anything except the character of his work. A dictionary of obsolete and obsolescent words would not only be singularly rich in strong and 甘い parts of speech; it would 追加する large 所有/入手s to the vocabulary of every competent writer who might not happen to be a competent reader.

OBSTINATE, adj. Inaccessible to the truth as it is manifest in the splendor and 強調する/ストレス of our advocacy. The popular type and exponent of obstinacy is the mule, a most intelligent animal.

OCCASIONAL, adj. Afflicting us with greater or いっそう少なく frequency. That, however, is not the sense in which the word is used in the phrase "時折の 詩(を作る)s," which are 詩(を作る)s written for an "occasion," such as an 周年記念日, a 祝賀 or other event. True, they afflict us a little worse than other sorts of 詩(を作る), but their 指名する has no 言及/関連 to 不規律な 再発.

OCCIDENT, n. The part of the world lying west (or east) of the Orient. It is 大部分は 住むd by Christians, a powerful subtribe of the Hypocrites, whose 主要な/長/主犯 産業s are 殺人 and cheating, which they are pleased to call "war" and "商業." These, also, are the 主要な/長/主犯 産業s of the Orient.

OCEAN, n. A 団体/死体 of water 占領するing about two-thirds of a world made for man - who has no gills.

OFFENSIVE, adj. 生成するing disagreeable emotions or sensations, as the 前進する of an army against its enemy. "Were the enemy's 策略 不快な/攻撃?" the king asked. "I should say so!" replied the 不成功の general. "The blackguard wouldn't come out of his 作品!"

OLD, adj. In that 行う/開催する/段階 of usefulness which is not inconsistent with general inefficiency, as an old man. Discredited by lapse of time and 不快な/攻撃 to the popular taste, as an old 調書をとる/予約する.

    "Old 調書をとる/予約するs?  The devil take them!" Goby said.

OLYMPIAN, adj. Relating to a mountain in Thessaly, once 住むd by gods, now a repository of yellowing newspapers, beer 瓶/封じ込めるs and mutilated sardine cans, attesting the presence of the tourist and his appetite.

OPERA, n. A play 代表するing life in another world, whose inhabitants have no speech but song, no 動議s but gestures and no postures but 態度s. All 事実上の/代理 is 模擬実験/偽ること, and the word 模擬実験/偽ること is from simia, an ape; but in オペラ the actor takes for his model Simia audibilis (or Pithecanthropos stentor) - the ape that howls.

    The actor apes a man - at least in 形態/調整;

OPIATE, n. An 打ち明けるd door in the 刑務所,拘置所 of 身元. It leads into the 刑務所,拘置所 yard.

OPPORTUNITY, n. A 都合のよい occasion for しっかり掴むing a 失望.

OPPOSE, v. To 補助装置 with obstructions and 反対s.

OPPOSITION, n. In politics the party that 妨げるs the 政府 from running amuck by hamstringing it. The King of Ghargaroo, who had been abroad to 熟考する/考慮する the science of 政府, 任命するd one hundred of his fattest 支配するs as members of a 議会 to make 法律s for the collection of 歳入. Forty of these he 指名するd the Party of 対立 and had his 総理大臣 carefully 教える them in their 義務 of …に反対するing every 王室の 手段. にもかかわらず, the first one that was submitted passed 全員一致で. 大いに displeased, the King 拒否権d it, 知らせるing the 対立 that if they did that again they would 支払う/賃金 for their obstinacy with their 長,率いるs. The entire forty 敏速に disemboweled themselves.

"What shall we do now?" the King asked. "自由主義の 会・原則s cannot be 持続するd without a party of 対立."

"Splendor of the universe," replied the 総理大臣, "it is true these dogs of 不明瞭 have no longer their 信任状, but all is not lost. Leave the 事柄 to this worm of the dust."

So the 大臣 had the 団体/死体s of his Majesty's 対立 embalmed and stuffed with straw, put 支援する into the seats of 力/強力にする and nailed there. Forty 投票(する)s were 記録,記録的な/記録するd against every 法案 and the nation 栄えるd. But one day a 法案 課すing a 税金 on warts was 敗北・負かすd - the members of the 政府 party had not been nailed to their seats! This so enraged the King that the 総理大臣 was put to death, the 議会 was 解散させるd with a 殴打/砲列 of 大砲, and 政府 of the people, by the people, for the people 死なせる/死ぬd from Ghargaroo.

OPTIMISM, n. The doctrine, or belief, that everything is beautiful, 含むing what is ugly, everything good, 特に the bad, and everything 権利 that is wrong. It is held with greatest tenacity by those most accustomed to the mischance of 落ちるing into adversity, and is most acceptably expounded with the grin that apes a smile. 存在 a blind 約束, it is inaccessible to the light of disproof - an 知識人 disorder, 産する/生じるing to no 治療 but death. It is hereditary, but fortunately not contagious.

OPTIMIST, n. A proponent of the doctrine that 黒人/ボイコット is white.

    A 悲観論者 適用するd to God for 救済.
    "Ah, you wish me to 回復する your hope and cheerfulness," said God.
    "No," replied the petitioner, "I wish you to create something that 
would 正当化する them."
    "The world is all created," said God, "but you have overlooked

ORATORY, n. A 共謀 between speech and 活動/戦闘 to cheat the understanding. A tyranny tempered by stenography.

ORPHAN, n. A living person whom death has 奪うd of the 力/強力にする of filial ingratitude - a privation 控訴,上告ing with a particular eloquence to all that is 同情的な in human nature. When young the 孤児 is 一般的に sent to an 亡命, where by careful cultivation of its rudimentary sense of locality it is taught to know its place. ORTHODOX, n. An ox wearing the popular 宗教的な joke.

ORTHOGRAPHY, n. The science of (一定の)期間ing by the 注目する,もくろむ instead of the ear. 支持するd with more heat than light by the outmates of every 亡命 for the insane. They have had to 譲歩する a few things since the time of Chaucer, but are 非,不,無 the いっそう少なく hot in defence of those to be 譲歩するd hereafter.

OSTRICH, n. A large bird to which (for its sins, doubtless) nature has 否定するd that 妨げる toe in which so many pious naturalists have seen a 目だつ 証拠 of design. The absence of a good working pair of wings is no defect, for, as has been ingeniously pointed out, the ostrich does not 飛行機で行く.

OTHERWISE, adv. No better.

OUTCOME, n. A particular type of 失望. By the 肉親,親類d of 知能 that sees in an exception a proof of the 支配する the 知恵 of an 行為/法令/行動する is 裁判官d by the 結果, the result. This is immortal nonsense; the 知恵 of an 行為/法令/行動する is to be juded by the light that the doer had when he 成し遂げるd it.

OUTDO, v.t. To make an enemy.

OUT-OF-DOORS, n. That part of one's 環境 upon which no 政府 has been able to collect 税金s. 主として useful to 奮起させる poets.

PAIN, n. An uncomfortable でっちあげる,人を罪に陥れる of mind that may have a physical basis in something that is 存在 done to the 団体/死体, or may be 純粋に mental, 原因(となる)d by the good fortune of another.

PAINTING, n. The art of 保護するing flat surfaces from the 天候 and exposing them to the critic. 以前は, 絵 and sculpture were 連合させるd in the same work: the 古代のs painted their statues. The only 現在の 同盟 between the two arts is that the modern painter chisels his patrons.

PALACE, n. A 罰金 and 高くつく/犠牲の大きい 住居, 特に that of a 広大な/多数の/重要な 公式の/役人. The 住居 of a high 高官 of the Christian Church is called a palace; that of the 創立者 of his 宗教 was known as a field, or wayside. There is 進歩.

PALM, n. A 種類 of tree having several varieties, of which the familiar "itching palm" (Palma hominis) is most 広範囲にわたって 分配するd and sedulously cultivated. This noble vegetable exudes a 肉親,親類d of invisible gum, which may be (悪事,秘密などを)発見するd by 適用するing to the bark a piece of gold or silver. The metal will 固執する with remarkable tenacity. The fruit of the itching palm is so bitter and unsatisfying that a かなりの 百分率 of it is いつかs given away in what are known as "benefactions."

PALMISTRY, n. The 947th method (によれば Mimbleshaw's 分類) of 得るing money by 誤った pretences. It consists in "reading character" in the wrinkles made by の近くにing the 手渡す. The pretence is not altogether 誤った; character can really be read very 正確に in this way, for the wrinkles in every 手渡す submitted plainly (一定の)期間 the word "dupe." The imposture consists in not reading it aloud.

PANDEMONIUM, n. Literally, the Place of All the Demons. Most of them have escaped into politics and 財政/金融, and the place is now used as a lecture hall by the Audible 改革者. When 乱すd by his 発言する/表明する the 古代の echoes clamor appropriate 返答s most gratifying to his pride of distinction.

PANTALOONS, n. A nether habiliment of the adult civilized male. The 衣料品 is tubular and unprovided with hinges at the points of flexion. Supposed to have been invented by a humorist. Called "trousers" by the enlightened and "pants" by the unworthy.

PANTHEISM, n. The doctrine that everything is God, in contradistinction to the doctrine that God is everything.

PANTOMIME, n. A play in which the story is told without 暴力/激しさ to the language. The least disagreeable form of 劇の 活動/戦闘.

PARDON, v. To remit a 刑罰,罰則 and 回復する to the life of 罪,犯罪. To 追加する to the 誘惑する of 罪,犯罪 the 誘惑 of ingratitude.

PASSPORT, n. A 文書 treacherously (打撃,刑罰などを)与えるd upon a 国民 going abroad, exposing him as an 外国人 and pointing him out for special reprobation and 乱暴/暴力を加える.

PAST, n. That part of Eternity with some small fraction of which we have a slight and 残念な 知識. A moving line called the 現在の parts it from an imaginary period known as the 未来. These two grand 分割s of Eternity, of which the one is continually effacing the other, are 完全に unlike. The one is dark with 悲しみ and 失望, the other 有望な with 繁栄 and joy. The Past is the 地域 of sobs, the 未来 is the realm of song. In the one crouches Memory, 覆う? in sackcloth and ashes, mumbling penitential 祈り; in the 日光 of the other Hope 飛行機で行くs with a 解放する/自由な wing, beckoning to 寺s of success and bowers of 緩和する. Yet the Past is the 未来 of yesterday, the 未来 is the Past of to-morrow. They are one - the knowledge and the dream.

PASTIME, n. A 装置 for 促進するing dejection. Gentle 演習 for 知識人 debility.

PATIENCE, n. A minor form of despair, disguised as a virtue.

PATRIOT, n. One to whom the 利益/興味s of a part seem superior to those of the whole. The dupe of statesmen and the 道具 of 征服者/勝利者s.

PATRIOTISM, n. Combustible rubbish read to the たいまつ of any one ambitious to illuminate his 指名する. In Dr. Johnson's famous dictionary patriotism is defined as the last 訴える手段/行楽地 of a scoundrel. With all 予定 尊敬(する)・点 to an enlightened but inferior lexicographer I beg to 服従させる/提出する that it is the first.

PEACE, n. In international 事件/事情/状勢s, a period of cheating between two periods of fighting.

PERIPATETIC, adj. Walking about. Relating to the philosophy of Aristotle, who, while expounding it, moved from place to place in order to 避ける his pupil's 反対s. A needless 警戒 - they knew no more of the 事柄 than he.

PERORATION, n. The 爆発 of an oratorical ロケット/急騰する. It dazzles, but to an 観察者/傍聴者 having the wrong 肉親,親類d of nose its most 目だつ peculiarity is the smell of the several 肉親,親類d of 砕く used in 準備するing it.

PERSEVERANCE, n. A lowly virtue whereby mediocrity 達成するs an inglorious success.

    "Persevere, persevere!" cry the homilists all,

PHYSICIAN, n. One upon whom we 始める,決める our hopes when ill and our dogs when 井戸/弁護士席.

PHYSIOGNOMY, n. The art of 決定するing the character of another by the resemblances and differences between his 直面する and our own, which is the 基準 of excellence.

PLAN, v.t. To bother about the best method of 遂行するing an 偶発の result.

Why he 課すs this hard 条件 on himself, and "drags at each 除去する a lengthening chain" of his own (1)偽造する/(2)徐々に進むing he can explain in ten 厚い 容積/容量s without illuminating by so much as a candle's ray the 黒人/ボイコット 深遠な of his own ignorance of the 事柄. There are 広大な/多数の/重要な novels, for 広大な/多数の/重要な writers have "laid waste their 力/強力にするs" to 令状 them, but it remains true that far and away the most fascinating fiction that we have is "The Thousand and One Nights."

ROPE, n. An obsolescent 器具 for reminding 暗殺者s that they too are mortal. It is put about the neck and remains in place one's whole life long. It has been 大部分は superseded by a more コンビナート/複合体 電気の 装置 worn upon another part of the person; and this is 速く giving place to an apparatus known as the preachment.

SAINT, n. A dead sinner 改訂するd and edited.

The Duchess of Orleans relates that the irreverent old calumniator, 保安官 Villeroi, who in his 青年 had known St. Francis de Sales, said, on 審理,公聴会 him called saint: "I am delighted to hear that Monsieur de Sales is a saint. He was fond of 説 indelicate things, and used to cheat at cards. In other 尊敬(する)・点s he was a perfect gentleman, though a fool."

SALACITY, n. A 確かな literary 質 frequently 観察するd in popular novels, 特に in those written by women and young girls, who give it another 指名する and think that in introducing it they are 占領するing a neglected field of letters and 得るing an overlooked 収穫. If they have the misfortune to live long enough they are tormented with a 願望(する) to 燃やす their sheaves.

SALAMANDER, n. 初めは a reptile 住むing 解雇する/砲火/射撃; later, an anthropomorphous immortal, but still a pyrophile. Salamanders are now believed to be extinct, the last one of which we have an account having been seen in Carcassonne by the Abbe Belloc, who exorcised it with a bucket of 宗教上の water.

SARCOPHAGUS, n. の中で the Greeks a 棺 which 存在 made of a 確かな 肉親,親類d of carnivorous 石/投石する, had the peculiar 所有物/資産/財産 of devouring the 団体/死体 placed in it. The sarcophagus known to modern obsequiographers is 一般的に a 製品 of the carpenter's art.

SATAN, n. One of the Creator's lamentable mistakes, repented in sashcloth and axes. 存在 instated as an archangel, Satan made himself multifariously objectionable and was finally expelled from Heaven. Halfway in his 降下/家系 he paused, bent his 長,率いる in thought a moment and at last went 支援する. "There is one 好意 that I should like to ask," said he.

In this country satire never had more than a sickly and uncertain 存在, for the soul of it is wit, wherein we are dolefully deficient, the humor that we mistake for it, like all humor, 存在 tolerant and 同情的な. SATYR, n. One of the few characters of the Grecian mythology (許可,名誉などを)与えるd 承認 in the Hebrew. (Leviticus, xvii, 7.) The satyr was at first a member of the dissolute community 認めるing a loose 忠誠 with Dionysius, but underwent many 変形s and 改良s. Not infrequently he is confounded with the faun, a later and decenter 創造 of the Romans, who was いっそう少なく like a man and more like a goat.

SCARABAEUS, n. The sacred beetle of the 古代の Egyptians, 連合した to our familiar "宙返り/暴落する-bug." It was supposed to symbolize immortality, the fact that God knew why giving it its peculiar sanctity. Its habit of incubating its eggs in a ball of ordure may also have commended it to the 好意 of the 聖職者, and may some day 保証する it an equal reverence の中で ourselves. True, the American beetle is an inferior beetle, but the American priest is an inferior priest.

SCARABEE, n. The same as scarabaeus.

SCARIFICATION, n. A form of penance practised by the mediaeval pious. The 儀式 was 成し遂げるd, いつかs with a knife, いつかs with a hot アイロンをかける, but always, says Arsenius Asceticus, acceptably if the penitent spared himself no 苦痛 nor 害のない disfigurement. Scarification, with other 天然のまま penances, has now been superseded by benefaction. The 設立するing of a library or endowment of a university is said to 産する/生じる to the penitent a 詐欺師 and more 継続している 苦痛 than is conferred by the knife or アイロンをかける, and is therefore a surer means of grace. There are, however, two 墓/厳粛/彫る/重大な 反対s to it as a penitential method: the good that it does and the taint of 司法(官).

SCEPTER, n. A king's staff of office, the 調印する and symbol of his 当局. It was 初めは a mace with which the 君主 admonished his jester and 拒否権d 大臣の 対策 by breaking the bones of their proponents.

SCIMETAR, n. A curved sword of 越えるing keenness, in the 行為/行う of which 確かな Orientals 達成する a surprising proficiency, as the 出来事/事件 here 関係のある will serve to show. The account is translated from the Japanese by Shusi Itama, a famous writer of the thirteenth century.

        When the 広大な/多数の/重要な Gichi-Kuktai was Mikado he 非難するd to 
    decapitation Jijiji Ri, a high officer of the 法廷,裁判所.  Soon after 
    the hour 任命するd for 業績/成果 of the 儀式 what was his 
    Majesty's surprise to see calmly approaching the 王位 the man 
    who should have been at that time ten minutes dead!
        "Seventeen hundred impossible dragons!" shouted the enraged

    o'clock?  And is it not now 3:10?"
        "Son of a thousand illustrious deities," answered the

    a 嘘(をつく) in comparison.  But your heavenly Majesty's sunny and 
    vitalizing wishes have been pestilently 無視(する)d.  With joy I 
    ran and placed my unworthy 団体/死体 in the market-place.  The 
    executioner appeared with his 明らかにする scimetar, ostentatiously 
    whirled it in 空気/公表する, and then, (電話線からの)盗聴 me lightly upon the neck, 
    strode away, pelted by the populace, with whom I was ever a 
    favorite.  I am come to pray for 司法(官) upon his own dishonorable

    caitiff belong?" asked the Mikado.
        "To the gallant Ninety-eight Hundred and Thirty-seventh - I

    attendant, and a half-hour later the 犯人 stood in the 
    Presence.
        "Thou bastard son of a three-legged hunchback without thumbs!"

    that it should have been thy 楽しみ to 切断する?"
        "Lord of Cranes of Cherry Blooms," replied the executioner,

    廃虚d and 不名誉d swordsman!  I struck the villain feebly 
    because in 繁栄するing the scimetar I had accidentally passed it

        So 説, he gasped his 最高の,を越す-knot, 解除するd off his 長,率いる, and 
    前進するing to the 王位 laid it 謙虚に at the Mikado's feet.

SCRAP-BOOK, n. A 調書をとる/予約する that is 一般的に edited by a fool. Many persons of some small distinction 収集する 捨てる-調書をとる/予約するs 含む/封じ込めるing whatever they happen to read about themselves or 雇う others to collect. One of these egotists was 演説(する)/住所d in the lines に引き続いて, by Agamemnon Melancthon Peters:

SCRIBBLER, n. A professional writer whose 見解(をとる)s are antagonistic to one's own.

SCRIPTURES, n. The sacred 調書をとる/予約するs of our 宗教上の 宗教, as distinguished from the 誤った and profane writings on which all other 約束s are based.

SEAL, n. A 示す impressed upon 確かな 肉親,親類d of 文書s to attest their authenticity and 当局. いつかs it is stamped upon wax, and 大(公)使館員d to the paper, いつかs into the paper itself. 調印(する)ing, in this sense, is a 生き残り of an 古代の custom of inscribing important papers with cabalistic words or 調印するs to give them a magical efficacy 独立した・無所属 of the 当局 that they 代表する. In the British museum are 保存するd many 古代の papers, mostly of a sacerdotal character, 実証するd by necromantic pentagrams and other 装置s, frequently 初期の letters of words to conjure with; and in many instances these are 大(公)使館員d in the same way that 調印(する)s are appended now. As nearly every reasonless and 明らかに meaningless custom, 儀式 or observance of modern times had origin in some remote 公共事業(料金)/有用性, it is pleasing to 公式文書,認める an example of 古代の nonsense 発展させるing in the 過程 of ages into something really useful. Our word "sincere" is derived from sine cero, without wax, but the learned are not in 協定 as to whether this 言及するs to the absence of the cabalistic 調印するs, or to that of the wax with which letters were 以前は の近くにd from public scrutiny. Either 見解(をとる) of the 事柄 will serve one in 即座の need of an hypothesis. The 初期のs L.S., 一般的に appended to 署名s of 合法的な 文書s, mean locum sigillis, the place of the 調印(する), although the 調印(する) is no longer used - an admirable example of 保守主義 distinguishing Man from the beasts that 死なせる/死ぬ. The words locum sigillis are 謙虚に 示唆するd as a suitable motto for the Pribyloff Islands whenever they shall take their place as a 君主 明言する/公表する of the American Union.

SEINE, n. A 肉親,親類d of 逮捕する for 影響ing an involuntary change of 環境. For fish it is made strong and coarse, but women are more easily taken with a singularly delicate fabric 負わせるd with small, 削減(する) 石/投石するs.

SENATE, n. A 団体/死体 of 年輩の gentlemen 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金d with high 義務s and 軽罪s.

SERIAL, n. A literary work, usually a story that is not true, creeping through several 問題/発行するs of a newspaper or magazine. Frequently appended to each 分割払い is a "synposis of 先行する 一時期/支部s" for those who have not read them, but a direr need is a synposis of 後継するing 一時期/支部s for those who do not ーするつもりである to read them. A synposis of the entire work would be still better. The late James F. Bowman was 令状ing a serial tale for a 週刊誌 paper in 共同 with a genius whose 指名する has not come 負かす/撃墜する to us. They wrote, not 共同で but alternately, Bowman 供給(する)ing the 分割払い for one week, his friend for the next, and so on, world without end, they hoped. Unfortunately they quarreled, and one Monday morning when Bowman read the paper to 準備する himself for his 仕事, he 設立する his work 削減(する) out for him in a way to surprise and 苦痛 him. His 協力者 had 乗る,着手するd every character of the narrative on a ship and sunk them all in the deepest part of the 大西洋.

SEVERALTY, n. Separateness, as, lands in severalty, i.e., lands held 個々に, not in 共同の 所有権. 確かな tribes of Indians are believed now to be 十分に civilized to have in severalty the lands that they have hitherto held as 部族の organizations, and could not sell to the Whites for waxen beads and potato whiskey.

SOPHISTRY, n. The 議論の的になる method of an 対抗者, distinguished from one's own by superior insincerity and fooling. This method is that of the later Sophists, a Grecian sect of philosophers who began by teaching 知恵, prudence, science, art and, in 簡潔な/要約する, whatever men せねばならない know, but lost themselves in a maze of quibbles and a 霧 of words.

    His bad 対抗者's "facts" he sweeps away,
    And drags his sophistry to light of day;

This is what we call the Appetite, and it 生き残るs the 難破させる and reek of mortality, to be rewarded or punished in another world, (許可,名誉などを)与えるing to what it hath 需要・要求するd in the flesh. The Appetite whose coarse clamoring was for the unwholesome viands of the general market and the public refectory shall be cast into eternal 飢饉, whilst that which 堅固に through civilly 主張するd on ortolans, caviare, terrapin, anchovies, pates de foie gras and all such Christian comestibles shall flesh its spiritual tooth in the souls of them forever and ever, and wreak its divine かわき upon the immortal parts of the rarest and richest ワインs ever quaffed here below. Such is my 宗教的な 約束, though I grieve to 自白する that neither His Holiness the ローマ法王 nor His Grace the 大司教 of Canterbury (whom I 平等に and profoundly 深い尊敬の念を抱く) will assent to its dissemination."

SPOOKER, n. A writer whose imagination 関心s itself with supernatural phenomena, 特に in the doings of spooks. One of the most illustrious spookers of our time is Mr. William D. Howells, who introduces a 井戸/弁護士席-credentialed reader to as respectable and mannerly a company of spooks as one could wish to 会合,会う. To the terror that 投資するs the chairman of a 地区 school board, the Howells ghost 追加するs something of the mystery enveloping a 農業者 from another 郡区.

"I am very sorry, sir," replied the critic, amiably, "but it did not occur to me that you really might not wish the public to know who wrote it."

Mr. W.C. Morrow, who used to live in San Jose, California, was (麻薬)常用者d to 令状ing ghost stories which made the reader feel as if a stream of lizards, fresh from the ice, were streaking it up his 支援する and hiding in his hair. "Why, Owen," said one, "what brings you here on such a night as this? You told me that this is one of Vasquez' favorite haunts! And you are a 信奉者. Aren't you afraid to be out?"

"My dear fellow," the 新聞記者/雑誌記者 replied with a drear autumnal cadence in his speech, like the moan of a leaf-laden 勝利,勝つd, "I am afraid to be in. I have one of Will Morrow's stories in my pocket and I don't dare to go where there is light enough to read it."

後部-海軍大将 Schley and 代表者/国会議員 Charles F. Joy were standing 近づく the Peace Monument, in Washington, discussing the question, Is success a 失敗? Mr. Joy suddenly broke off in the middle of an eloquent 宣告,判決, exclaiming: "Hello! I've heard that 禁止(する)d before. Santlemann's, I think."

"I don't hear any 禁止(する)d," said Schley.

"Come to think, I don't either," said Joy; "but I see General Miles coming 負かす/撃墜する the avenue, and that 野外劇/豪華な行列 always 影響する/感情s me in the same way as a 厚かましさ/高級将校連 禁止(する)d. One has to scrutinize one's impressions pretty closely, or one will mistake their origin."

While the 海軍大将 was digesting this 迅速な meal of philosophy General Miles passed in review, a spectacle of impressive dignity. When the tail of the seeming 行列 had passed and the two 観察者/傍聴者s had 回復するd from the transient blindness 原因(となる)d by its effulgence -

"He seems to be enjoying himself," said the 海軍大将.

"There is nothing," assented Joy, thoughtfully, "that he enjoys one-half so 井戸/弁護士席."

The illustrious 政治家, Champ Clark, once lived about a mile from the village of Jebigue, in Missouri. One day he 棒 into town on a favorite mule, and, hitching the beast on the sunny 味方する of a street, in 前線 of a saloon, he went inside in his character of teetotaler, to apprise the barkeeper that ワイン is a mocker. It was a dreadfully hot day. Pretty soon a neighbor (機の)カム in and seeing Clark, said:

"O, he's all 権利," said Clark, lightly; "he's an inveterate smoker."

The neighbor took a lemonade, but shook his 長,率いる and repeated that it was not 権利.

He was a conspirator. "Yes," interposed Clark, "that animal has the best nose in Missouri. But if he doesn't mind, you shouldn't."

In the course of human events Mr. Clark went out, and there, 明らかに, lay the 火葬するd and shrunken remains of his charger. The boys idd not have any fun out of Mr. Clarke, who looked at the 団体/死体 and, with the 非,不,無-committal 表現 to which he 借りがあるs so much of his political preferment, went away. Returning to his apartment one evening, the General was surprised and 苦痛d to find Adam (for so the creature is 指名するd, the general 存在 a Darwinian) sitting up for him and wearing his master's best uniform coat, epaulettes and all.

Adam rose and with a reproachful look got 負かす/撃墜する on all fours in the manner of his 肉親,親類d and, scuffling across the room to a (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する, returned with a visiting-card: General Barry had called and, 裁判官ing by an empty シャンペン酒 瓶/封じ込める and several cigar-stumps, had been hospitably entertained while waiting. The general わびるd to his faithful progenitor and retired. The next day he met General Barry, who said:

"Spoon, old man, when leaving you last evening I forgot to ask you about those excellent cigars. Where did you get them?"

General Wotherspoon did not deign to reply, but walked away.

"容赦 me, please," said Barry, moving after him; "I was joking of course. Why, I knew it was not you before I had been in the room fifteen minutes."

SUCCESS, n. The one unpardonable sin against one's fellows. In literature, and 特に in poetry, the elements of success are exceedingly simple, and are admirably 始める,決める 前へ/外へ in the に引き続いて lines by the reverend Father Gassalasca Jape, する権利を与えるd, for some mysterious 推論する/理由, "John A. Joyce."

The 権利 of 選挙権/賛成 (which is held to be both a 特権 and a 義務) means, as 一般的に 解釈する/通訳するd, the 権利 to 投票(する) for the man of another man's choice, and is 高度に prized. 拒絶 to do so has the bad 指名する of "incivism." The incivilian, however, cannot be 適切に arraigned for his 罪,犯罪, for there is no 合法的 accuser. If the accuser is himself 有罪の he has no standing in the 法廷,裁判所 of opinion; if not, he 利益(をあげる)s by the 罪,犯罪, for A's 棄権 from 投票(する)ing gives greater 負わせる to the 投票(する) of B. By 女性(の) 選挙権/賛成 is meant the 権利 of a woman to 投票(する) as some man tells her to. It is based on 女性(の) 責任/義務, which is somewhat 限られた/立憲的な. The woman most eager to jump out of her petticoat to 主張する her 権利s is first to jump 支援する into it when 脅すd with a switching for misusing them.

SYCOPHANT, n. One who approaches Greatness on his belly so that he may not be 命令(する)d to turn and be kicked. He is いつかs an editor.

    As the lean leech, its 犠牲者 設立する, is pleased
    To 直す/買収する,八百長をする itself upon a part 病気d
    Till, its 黒人/ボイコット hide distended with bad 血,

SYLLOGISM, n. A 論理(学)の 決まり文句/製法 consisting of a major and a minor 仮定/引き受けること and an inconsequent. (See LOGIC.)

SYLPH, n. An immaterial but 明白な 存在 that 住むd the 空気/公表する when the 空気/公表する was an element and before it was fatally 汚染するd with factory smoke, 下水管 gas and 類似の 製品s of civilization. Sylphs were 連合した to gnomes, nymphs and salamanders, which dwelt, それぞれ, in earth, water and 解雇する/砲火/射撃, all now insalubrious. Sylphs, like fowls of the 空気/公表する, were male and 女性(の), to no 目的, 明らかに, for if they had progeny they must have nested in accessible places, 非,不,無 of the chicks having ever been seen.

SYMBOL, n. Something that is supposed to typify or stand for something else. Many symbols are mere "生き残りs" - things which having no longer any 公共事業(料金)/有用性 continue to 存在する because we have 相続するd the 傾向 to make them; as funereal urns carved on 記念の monuments. They were once real urns 持つ/拘留するing the ashes of the dead. We cannot stop making them, but we can give them a 指名する that 隠すs our helplessness.

SYMBOLIC, adj. 付随するing to symbols and the use and 解釈/通訳 of symbols.

    They say 'tis 良心 feels compunction;
    I 持つ/拘留する that that's the stomach's 機能(する)/行事,
    For of the sinner I have 公式文書,認めるd
    That when he's sinned he's somewhat bloated,
    Or ill some other 恐ろしい fashion

TAKE, v.t. To acquire, frequently by 軍隊 but preferably by stealth.

TALK, v.t. To commit an indiscretion without 誘惑, from an impulse without 目的.

TARIFF, n. A 規模 of 税金s on 輸入するs, designed to 保護する the 国内の 生産者 against the greed of his 消費者.

TECHNICALITY, n. In an English 法廷,裁判所 a man 指名するd Home was tried for 名誉き損,中傷 in having (刑事)被告 his neighbor of 殺人. His exact words were: "Sir Thomas Holt hath taken a cleaver and stricken his cook upon the 長,率いる, so that one 味方する of the 長,率いる fell upon one shoulder and the other 味方する upon the other shoulder." The 被告 was acquitted by 指示/教授/教育 of the 法廷,裁判所, the learned 裁判官s 持つ/拘留するing that the words did not 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金 殺人, for they did not 断言する the death of the cook, that 存在 only an inference.

TEDIUM, n. Ennui, the 明言する/公表する or 条件 of one that is bored. Many fanciful derivations of the word have been 断言するd, but so high an 当局 as Father Jape says that it comes from a very obvious source - the first words of the 古代の Latin hymn Te Deum Laudamus. In this 明らかに natural derivation there is something that saddens.

TEETOTALER, n. One who 棄権するs from strong drink, いつかs 全く, いつかs tolerably 全く.

TELEPHONE, n. An 発明 of the devil which 廃止するs some of the advantages of making a disagreeable person keep his distance.

TELESCOPE, n. A 装置 having a relation to the 注目する,もくろむ 類似の to that of the telephone to the ear, enabling distant 反対するs to 疫病/悩ます us with a multitude of needless 詳細(に述べる)s. Luckily it is unprovided with a bell 召喚するing us to the sacrifice.

TENACITY, n. A 確かな 質 of the human 手渡す in its relation to the coin of the realm. It 達成するs its highest 開発 in the 手渡す of 当局 and is considered a serviceable 器具/備品 for a career in politics. The に引き続いて illustrative lines were written of a Californian gentleman in high political preferment, who has passed to his accounting:

THEOSOPHY, n. An 古代の 約束 having all the certitude of 宗教 and all the mystery of science. The modern Theosophist 持つ/拘留するs, with the Buddhists, that we live an incalculable number of times on this earth, in as many several 団体/死体s, because one life is not long enough for our 完全にする spiritual 開発; that is, a 選び出す/独身 lifetime does not 十分である for us to become as wise and good as we choose to wish to become. To be 絶対 wise and good - that is perfection; and the Theosophist is so keen-sighted as to have 観察するd that everything desirous of 改良 結局 達成するs perfection. いっそう少なく competent 観察者/傍聴者s are 性質の/したい気がして to except cats, which seem neither wiser nor better than they were last year. The greatest and fattest of 最近の Theosophists was the late Madame Blavatsky, who had no cat.

TIGHTS, n. An habiliment of the 行う/開催する/段階 designed to 増強する the general acclamation of the 圧力(をかける) スパイ/執行官 with a particular publicity. Public attention was once somewhat コースを変えるd from this 衣料品 to 行方不明になる Lillian Russell's 拒絶 to wear it, and many were the conjectures as to her 動機, the guess of 行方不明になる Pauline Hall showing a high order of ingenuity and 支えるd reflection. It was 行方不明になる Hall's belief that nature had not endowed 行方不明になる Russell with beautiful 脚s. This theory was impossible of 受託 by the male understanding, but the conception of a 欠陥のある 女性(の) 脚 was of so prodigious originality as to 階級 の中で the most brilliant feats of philosophical 憶測! It is strange that in all the 論争 regarding 行方不明になる Russell's aversion to tights no one seems to have thought to ascribe it to what was known の中で the 古代のs as "modesty." The nature of that 感情 is now imperfectly understood, and かもしれない incapable of 解説,博覧会 with the vocabulary that remains to us. The 熟考する/考慮する of lost arts has, however, been recently 生き返らせるd and some of the arts themselves 回復するd. This is an 時代 of renaissances, and there is ground for hope that the 原始の "blush" may be dragged from its hiding-place amongst the tombs of antiquity and hissed on to the 行う/開催する/段階.

TOMB, n. The House of 無関心/冷淡. Tombs are now by ありふれた 同意 投資するd with a 確かな sanctity, but when they have been long tenanted it is considered no sin to break them open and ライフル銃/探して盗む them, the famous Egyptologist, Dr. Huggyns, explaining that a tomb may be innocently "glened" as soon as its occupant is done "smellynge," the soul 存在 then all exhaled. This reasonable 見解(をとる) is now 一般に 受託するd by archaeologists, whereby the noble science of Curiosity has been 大いに dignified.

TOPE, v. To tipple, booze, swill, soak, guzzle, lush, bib, or swig. In the individual, 最高の,を越すing is regarded with disesteem, but 最高の,を越すing nations are in the 最前部 of civilization and 力/強力にする. When pitted against the hard-drinking Christians the absemious Mahometans go 負かす/撃墜する like grass before the scythe. In India one hundred thousand beef- eating and brandy-and-soda guzzling Britons 持つ/拘留する in subjection two hundred and fifty million vegetarian abstainers of the same Aryan race. With what an 平易な grace the whisky-loving American 押し進めるd the temperate Spaniard out of his 所有/入手s! From the time when the Berserkers 荒廃させるd all the coasts of western Europe and lay drunk in every 征服する/打ち勝つd port it has been the same way: everywhere the nations that drink too much are 観察するd to fight rather 井戸/弁護士席 and not too righteously. Wherefore the estimable old ladies who 廃止するd the canteen from the American army may 正確に,正当に 誇る of having materially augmented the nation's 軍の 力/強力にする.

TORTOISE, n. A creature thoughtfully created to 供給(する) occasion for the に引き続いて lines by the illustrious Ambat Delaso:

TREE, n. A tall vegetable ーするつもりであるd by nature to serve as a penal apparatus, though through a miscarriage of 司法(官) most trees 耐える only a ごくわずかの fruit, or 非,不,無 at all. When 自然に fruited, the tree is a beneficient 機関 of civilization and an important factor in public morals. In the 厳しい West and the 極度の慎重さを要する South its fruit (white and 黒人/ボイコット それぞれ) though not eaten, is agreeable to the public taste and, though not 輸出(する)d, profitable to the general 福利事業. That the 合法的 relation of the tree to 司法(官) was no 発見 of 裁判官 Lynch (who, indeed, 譲歩するd it no primacy over the lamp-地位,任命する and the 橋(渡しをする)-girder) is made plain by the に引き続いて passage from Morryster, who antedated him by two centuries:

TRIAL, n. A formal 調査 designed to 証明する and put upon 記録,記録的な/記録する the blameless characters of 裁判官s, 支持するs and 賠審員s. ーするために 影響 this 目的 it is necessary to 供給(する) a contrast in the person of one who is called the 被告, the 囚人, or the (刑事)被告. If the contrast is made 十分に (疑いを)晴らす this person is made to を受ける such an affliction as will give the virtuous gentlemen a comfortable sense of their 免疫, 追加するd to that of their 価値(がある). In our day the (刑事)被告 is usually a human 存在, or a 社会主義者, but in mediaeval times, animals, fishes, reptiles and insects were brought to 裁判,公判. A beast that had taken human life, or practiced sorcery, was duly 逮捕(する)d, tried and, if 非難するd, put to death by the public executioner. Insects 荒廃させるing 穀物 fields, orchards or vineyards were 特記する/引用するd to 控訴,上告 by counsel before a civil 法廷, and after 証言, argument and 激しい非難, if they continued in contumaciam the 事柄 was taken to a high ecclesiastical 法廷,裁判所, where they were solemnly excommunicated and anathematized. In a street of Toledo, some pigs that had wickedly run between the viceroy's 脚s, upsetting him, were 逮捕(する)d on a 令状, tried and punished. In Naples and ass was 非難するd to be 燃やすd at the 火刑/賭ける, but the 宣告,判決 appears not to have been 遂行する/発効させるd. D'Addosio relates from the 法廷,裁判所 記録,記録的な/記録するs many 裁判,公判s of pigs, bulls, horses, cocks, dogs, goats, etc., 大いに, it is believed, to the betterment of their 行為/行う and morals. UBIQUITY, n. The gift or 力/強力にする of 存在 in all places at one time, but not in all places at all times, which is omnipresence, an せいにする of God and the luminiferous ether only. A popular character in old Italian plays, who imitated with ludicrous 無資格/無能力 the buffone, or clown, and was therefore the ape of an ape; for the clown himself imitated the serious characters of the play. The zany was progenitor to the specialist in humor, as we to-day have the unhappiness to know him. In the zany we see an example of 創造; in the humorist, of 伝達/伝染. Another excellent 見本/標本 of the modern zany is the curate, who apes the rector, who apes the bishop, who apes the 大司教, who apes the devil.

ZANZIBARI, n. An inhabitant of the Sultanate of Zanzibar, off the eastern coast of Africa. The Zanzibaris, a warlike people, are best known in this country through a 脅すing 外交の 出来事/事件 that occurred a few years ago. The American 領事 at the 資本/首都 占領するd a dwelling that 直面するd the sea, with a sandy beach between. 大いに to the スキャンダル of this 公式の/役人's family, and against repeated remonstrances of the 公式の/役人 himself, the people of the city 固執するd in using the beach for bathing.
